Abstract:This paper investigates the industrial production of hydrogen through steam methane reforming (SMR) from both exergy efficiency and CO2 emission aspects. An SMR model is constructed based on a practical flow diagram including desulfurizer, furnace, separation unit and heat exchangers. The influence of reformer temperature (Tr) and steam to carbon (S/C) ratio is analyzed to optimize exergy efficiency and CO2 emission. A clear correlation is obtained between exergy efficiency and CO2 emission. Results also show optimal S/C ratio decreases with Tr. An exergy load distribution analysis which evaluates interactions between the system and its subsystems with parameter variations is employed to find promising directions for efficiency improvement. Results show that the greatest improvement lies in increasing efficiency of furnace without increasing its relative exergy load. Integration of oxygen-enriched combustion (OEC) with SMR is also evaluated. The integration of OEC can increase the system efficiency greatly when the reformer operates above critical point, while in other cases the system efficiency may decrease.

Abstract:Steam reforming of hydrocarbons is the main process of industrial hydrogen production, however, the process is strongly limited by its high energy consumption and carbon emission. Systematic evaluation of the process was performed by using exergy analysis. For steam methane reforming, the exergy efficiencies and carbon emission for unit H 2 production were evaluated with variation of reformer temperature and steam to carbon molar ratio. The optimal operation conditions were identified in the investigation range. The steam reforming processes with natural gas, naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as raw materials, respectively, were compared. The system exergy efficiency for natural gas, LPG, naphtha were 0.676, 0.638 and 0.635, respectively. An analytical expression for the relationship between efficiencies of subunits and system exergy efficiency was obtained and used to investigate the steam reforming process on the sub-unit level, by which the strategies were proposed to improve the system exergy efficiency.
Effects of fuel reforming on large-bore low-speed two-stroke dual fuel marine engine combined with EGR and injection strategy

Abstract:Large-bore low-speed two-stroke dual fuel engines have become an urgent need to relieve energy crisis and reduce emissions. In this study, the effects of fuel reforming on large-bore low-speed two-stroke dual fuel marine engine combined with EGR and injection strategy were investigated. With increase of injection advance angle, the ISFC increases slightly, and also NOx emissions increase, which indicate that the optimal injection timing is 12.5°CA BTDC in consideration of emission and fuel economy. A 10% EGR rate is selected for NOx reduction and pressure rise rate suppression, which might increase fuel consumption in lower combustion temperature. Subsequently, fuel reforming is applied for further fuel consumption optimization. Compared with the base case, ISFC is reduced by 7.80% by introducing 1.29% syngas, but NOx emissions are higher than IMO Tier Ⅲ limit emissions standards. After combined optimization, the indicated thermal efficiency could be increased from nearly 50% (base case) to 55% by 12.5 BTDC_E10_2.25% (pilot fuel injection timing is 12.5°CA BTDC, EGR rate is 10%, and γreforming is 2.25%). Compared with the base case, the NOx emissions increase, but still lower than the limit value of IMO Tier Ⅲ emission standards, while the ISFC reduce 9.45% by 12.5 BTDC_E10_2.25%. Base on the above discussion, it can be concluded that the collaborative strategy has great potential in improving the fuel economy and also controlling emissions standard of low-speed dual fuel marine engine.

Abstract:In order to improve the heat utilization of exhaust gas from small and medium-sized ships without exhaust boilers, an improved methanol steam reforming (MSR) is proposed in the study. Based on the design and optimization theories of a MSR reactor, the MSR model was developed and employed to investigate the effect of reforming gas at different blending ratios on the combustion and emission characteristics in the AVL-Fire environment. The result obtained shows that the performance, emission and economic characteristics are improved due to the existence of reforming gas. More specifically, the indicated power of single cylinder is decreased by 0.5% - 4.26%and the NO mass fractions reduced by 2.95% -18.25%at different loads. Similarly, the NOx weighted ratio is reduced by 34.59%, which is close to NOx emission limit of Tier II. In addition, the equivalent fuel consumption rate is reduced by 0.45%-3.59% at the maximum mixing ratio, and the converted fuel cost is reduced by 6%-10% at medium and high loads. Finally, through the comprehensive performance analysis, the optimized blending ratio at each load are obtained as follows: Rg7.5 or Rg12.5 for100% load, Rg10for 75% load, Rg7.5for 50% load and Rg2.5for 25% load. Thus, the blending combustion MSR reaction is feasible to improve the energy efficiency and reduce NO x emission of the marine engine.

Abstract:In order to improve the heat utilization of exhaust from the small or medium-sized ships without exhaust boilers, four types of methanol reforming reactors were designed and optimized via the field synergy principle. The effect of the operating parameters on the performance of optimized reactor under typical loads was also investigated. The analysis based on the field synergy principle shows that the R(S,1) reactor has higher heat transfer synergy performance, better evaporation performance, and more uniform vapour distribution at the inlet of the reaction section, which is more beneficial to the reforming reaction. The effect of the operating parameters on reactor performance shows that the reactor performs better at 75% load with hydro-alcohol molar fraction ratios (S/C) of 1.2 or 1.3. The engine load affects the reactor performance by influencing the temperature of the evaporation and reaction sections. The S/C of the mixed solution at the inlet of the reactor were set at 1.2 and 1.3 to explore the effect of engine loads on the reforming performance under E3 test cycle. The results show that the reactor performs better at S/C = 1.3 under the loads of 100, 75, and 25%; at S/C = 1.2, the reactor performed better under 50% load.

Abstract:Taking into account the formation of thermal NO, the local balance method and Extended Zeldovich model were used in the paper to simulate the combustion and emission of a marine diesel engine with the AVL FIRE software and to verify the model. The effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) ratios of 0%, 10%and 20% on combustion and emission of a diesel engine were discussed. The purpose of the paper provided a theoretical basis for the marine diesel engine upgrade of Chinese small and medium sized vessels, especially fishing vessel engine. The results show that with the increasing of EGR ratio,the cylinder pressure and combustion temperatures decreases and the peak of soot also shown a downward trend and more gentle, under the same load conditions.

Abstract:Miniaturized gas-to-liquids (GTL) process utilizes remote, distributed natural gas reserves to produce liquid synfuels. The demand for cost-down to enable smaller production scales requires carefully evaluating different process alternatives involving gas recycles and feedstock variations. We develop a multiscale reactor model combining CFD, microkinetics and reliable effectiveness factor correlations to simulate a microchannel methane reformer producing syngas under conditions relevant for miniaturized GTL. The reformer's operation is evaluated for various fuels and feedstock compositions. It is shown that the attainable production scale is 30,000h−1 regardless of fuel. Recycling the Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) tail gas can reduce the reformer's greenhouse gases (GHG) emission by ~18% at the cost of a narrower operation window under high fuel-to-reforming gas ratios. Use of reforming feedstock containing 25vol% CO2 increases the maximum CO productivity by 30% and reduces the GHG emission by 6–17%, while the operability is unaffected. To improve the reformers' operability when fueled by F-T tail gas, 5% 1-μm transport pores is introduced into the reforming catalyst, which drastically extends the operation window and reduces the GHG emission, thus broadening the attainable scale of production to over 40,000h−1.

Abstract:Abstract Pilot-diesel-ignition ammonia combustion engines have attracted widespread attentions from the maritime sector, but there are still bottleneck problems such as high unburned NH 3 and N 2 O emissions as well as low thermal efficiency that need to be solved before further applications. In this study, a concept termed as in-cylinder reforming gas recirculation is initiated to simultaneously improve the thermal efficiency and reduce the unburned NH 3 , NO x , N 2 O and greenhouse gas emissions of pilot-diesel-ignition ammonia combustion engine. For this concept, one cylinder of the multi-cylinder engine operates rich of stoichiometric and the excess ammonia in the cylinder is partially decomposed into hydrogen, then the exhaust of this dedicated reforming cylinder is recirculated into the other cylinders and therefore the advantages of hydrogen-enriched combustion and exhaust gas recirculation can be combined. The results show that at 3% diesel energetic ratio and 1000 rpm, the engine can increase the indicated thermal efficiency by 15.8% and reduce the unburned NH 3 by 89.3%, N 2 O by 91.2% compared to the base/traditional ammonia engine without the proposed method. At the same time, it is able to reduce carbon footprint by 97.0% and greenhouse gases by 94.0% compared to the traditional pure diesel mode.

Abstract:This paper proposes an integration of waste heat recovery system and exhaust gas recirculation system to break the inherent trade-offs between oxynitride and carbon emissions of marine low-speed diesel engine. It is significant important to break these trade-offs, because Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index may not be met, though Energy Efficiency Design Index and Tier III can be already achieved for old ships. The waste heat recovery system consists of supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle and Kalina cycle, where the integration of supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle and Kalina cycle is achieved in the parallel style. This paper uses the classical thermodynamics in terms of engineering approach to carry out the parameter analysis of combined system first. The optimization is conducted in terms of efficiency, energy density and techno-economy with the introduction of global optimal policy. The results showed that the highest efficiency of 52.32% at Tier III mode can be achieved, at which the net power, exergy efficiency, area per unit power output and levelized energy cost can be achieved by 1568.57kW, 45.75%, 0.589m 2 /kW and 0.114$/kWh at main engine load of 85%. Further, the net power output of waste heat recovery system can reach 1085.76 kW and 2043 kW at Tier II mode and Tier III mode, while the recovering rate of waste heat recovery system can reach over 5% at Tier III mode. Finally, the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index of a container ship equipping with such combined system can be reduced from 9.50 to 9.05.

Abstract:Owing to the severity of global environmental problems caused by climate change, efforts to efficiently use energy are being further strengthened. In this study, to improve energy efficiency, part of the boil-off gas generated from an LNG-fueled ship fuel tank was extracted and converted into hydrogen and then utilized as an auxiliary power source for the ship through a high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC). There are several methods for converting methane to hydrogen; however, steam methane reforming was used in this study. Integrating steam methane reforming into ship-based hydrogen production solves the problem of pure hydrogen storage and transportation as well as addresses environmental concerns by reducing pollutant emissions. Before designing the steam methane reforming reactor, a performance analysis of the reformer was performed using several parameters. The methane conversion rate decreased as the operating pressure of the reformer increased. The methane conversion rate exceeded 90 % when the reformer temperature was above 973 K, the S/C ratio was above 3, and the pressure was below 2 bar. The hydrogen yield was greater than 40 % when the S/C ratio was greater than 4 at the same temperature and pressure. Based on these results, the length of the reformer decreased as its operating temperature increased; at temperatures below 1000 K, the length of the reformer changed significantly as the pressure changed. When the S/C ratio is 3 or 4, the optimal design of the reformer is possible at a temperature range of 1023 K or more at a pressure of 2 bar and 923 K or more at a pressure of 4 bar, and it is reasonable to set the length of the reformer within 2 m considering the limited space on board.

Similarly, the NOx weighted emission is reduced by 34.10%, which is close to the NOx emission limit of Tier II, but the CO weighted emission is increased by 30.89%. In addition, the equivalent fuel consumption rate is reduced by 0.45%–3.59% at the maximum blending ratio, and the converted fuel cost is reduced by 6%–10% at medium and high loads. Finally, based on the comprehensive performance analysis, the optimized blending ratio at each load is obtained as follows: Rg7.5 or Rg12.5 for 100% load, Rg10 for 75% load, Rg7.5 for 50% load, and Rg2.5 for 25% load. Thus, the MSR reaction is feasible to improve the energy efficiency and reduce NOx emission of the marine engine.

Abstract:In order to investigate the influences of hydrogen addition and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) strategies on performance, combustion, emissions, energy and exergy balance of a lean-burn and high compression ratio (CR) (13.6) natural gas spark ignition (NGSI) engine fueled with 99% methane content is tested on the engine bench under different hydrogen contents. A corresponding 1D GT-Power simulation model is built and validated according to experimental data. In the first stage, both peak cylinder pressure (PCP) and peak heat release rate (HRR) increase with the hydrogen addition but decrease with increased EGR ratio. Besides, EGR addition will retard the effect of various hydrogen contents on performance and combustion of the engine. In the second stage, the NOx emissions increase with hydrogen enrichment but decrease with the increase of EGR rate due to the variation of in-cylinder temperature, which emphasizes effective method of EGR addition strategies to reduce the NOx emissions on the lean-burn NGSI engine fueled with natural gas-hydrogen (HNG). Finally, the change trends of exergy terms are similar to their corresponding energy, but the percentages of heat transfer exergy and exhaust exergy are about 7.05 and 2.61 times lower than their corresponding energy. Furthermore, the simulation model and data in the paper can be applied to evaluate and optimize the energy distribution and performance by changing different technologies, strategies and fuels in the future. What is more, the analysis of the energy and exergy balance can provide a new thought for the future research to improve engine's performance.

Abstract:Combustion, emission characteristics and the economic performance of a heavy-duty natural gas engine blended with different ratios of reformed gas were investigated, and the feasibility of applying the fuel partial oxidation catalytic reforming system on a heavy-duty natural gas engine was discussed. Experimental results showed that the use of Rh/γ-Al2O3 as a catalyst of partial oxidation reaction of natural gas fuel requires low initial reaction inlet gas temperature, and it has good catalytic performance and durability, which makes it feasible to be applied on vehicles. Blending with reformed gas from partial oxidation reaction significantly reduces NOX and CH4 emission and effectively reduces coefficient of variance of peak pressure. In additions, no significant change in fuel consumption was observed after blending with reformed gas, while CO emissions increased. In general, the combination of on-board fuel partial oxidation catalytic reforming system to improve the performance of natural gas engines has good prospects.

Abstract:Utilizing engine exhaust to provide energy for methanol steam reforming is a dependable approach for waste heat recovery and online hydrogen production. In this work, firstly, an online methanol reformer system based on waste heat recovery from a methanol-diesel dual direct injection engine is proposed, and a novel methanol reformer adapted to the engine is designed. Then, simulation models of the methanol reformer are developed, and a multi-physics coupled simulation is performed. The component transport model with three-step simplified reactions is used to simulate the methanol steam reforming, and the influence mechanism of key operational parameters on reforming performance is deeply revealed through quantitative and qualitative analyses. Furthermore, the dynamic evolution of gas components inside the methanol reformer under different operational parameters is disclosed through the visualization of simulation results. Finally, sensitivity analysis of key operational parameters is conducted through orthogonal experiment, and the quantification and ranking of the sensitivity is realized by using the range analysis method. The results indicate that, relative to the initial conditions, the hydrogen production rate and methanol conversion are improved by 60.35% and 27.28%, respectively. The findings of this study provide a valuable reference for designing and enhancing the performance of methanol reformer.

Abstract:In this paper, MAN 6S35ME-B9 two-stroke diesel engine is taken as the research object. By constructing a detailed combustion reaction mechanism including CH 4, C 4H 10O, nitrides and other substances, CHEMKIN-PRO is used to simulate the same fuel mixing ratio and excess air coefficient. Under the condition of 1.5, the temperature, NO mole fraction and NH 3 mole fraction in the reactor change and study the factors affecting the pollutant emission of marine diesel engine with the crank angle under different working conditions. The simulation shows that with the decrease of diesel engine speed, the maximum temperature of combustion reaction and the temperature at exhaust opening are obviously reduced. At the same time, mole fraction of NO and NH 3 decreases with the decrease of rotational speed, and there is no nitride production in the combustion reaction at 25%.

Abstract:In the chemical industry, hydrogen (H2) production through steam-methane reforming is a well-established process. With the growing demand for H-fueled vehicles and charging stations, there is a need for compact reformers with efficient heat transfer capabilities. In this study, computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed to evaluate the methane (CH4) conversion and heat transfer efficiency of various reformer designs. These designs include single, double, and triple tubes, each with parallel- and counter-flow configurations between the reformate feed and heat source. The findings revealed substantial disparities in methane conversion between the tube designs and flow configurations. Notably, the triple-tube design outperforms single and double tubes, exhibiting higher methane conversion and improved heat transfer efficiency. This superior performance is attributed to the larger wall area facing the heat source and additional heat recovery from the reformate flowing in the inner annulus. This led to the highest temperature at the catalyst exit among the cases, increasing methane conversion, and the lowest reformate temperature at the reformer tube exit, which is also beneficial for the subsequent water–gas shift reaction process. Installing external fins on the reformer tube provided a more effective enhancement of heat transfer than using internal fins in the catalyst section. Regardless of the tube design employed, the counter-flow configuration consistently enhanced the heat transfer efficiency, resulting in 4.6–11.9% higher methane conversion than the parallel-flow configuration. Consequently, the triple-tube design with the counter-flow configuration achieved the highest methane conversion, offering flexibility in the reformer design, including the potential for lower heat input and a reduced catalyst volume.

Optimization of combustion process for non-road heavy-duty diesel engines

Abstract:Due to its high thermal efficiency and excellent performance, diesel engine is widely used in non-road mobile machinery, such as engineering and agricultural industry, whose power ranges from a dozen to several hundred kilowatt. However, it also brings amounts of NOx and soot emissions. The problems caused by emissions from non-road diesel engine have widely drawn people’s attention. In recent years, Chinese government has also launched a series of stringent regulations to limit emissions from non-road engines, which can even be equivalent with the US EPA-IV, the most stringent emissions regulation in the whole world. In order to meet those harsh items of emissions regulation, all the engine manufacturers have to upgrade the products in a short time. At the same time, domestic and foreign internal combustion engine (ICE) experts have also carried out a lot of research related to the upgrading of non-road diesel engines. Small and medium power (< 75 kW) non-road diesel engines have innate advantages and wide applications in agricultural production. With the rapid development of after-treatment technology, such as diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulates filter (DPF), selective catalyst reduction (SCR), et al, the path to meet emissions regulations becomes more diverse. However, to meet the non-road stage IV emissions regulation, in addition to exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and after-treatment technology, basic measurements (in-cylinder purification) must be used to reduce the raw emissions of engine. For the purpose of reducing raw emissions of the non-road heavy-duty diesel engine, experimental study was carried out on the in-cylinder combustion process of the diesel engine in this paper. CHD234V8 common rail direct injection diesel engine was used as a prototype. Through optimization design and matching of the diesel engine combustion chamber structure with fuel injection strategy, the quality of fuel and gas mixture in the cylinder was improved, the proportion of fuel impacting on the combustion chamber wall was optimized, and the maximum in-cylinder pressure was reduced. After the optimization of the diesel engine, the emission performance was greatly improved. Compared with the original engine, the specific fuel consumption at rated power and maximum torque conditions decreased 2.5% and 6.2%, and the smoke emission decreased 71.4% and 67.9%, respectively. CO, (HC+NOx), and particulate matters (PM) decreased 33.9%, 11.8%, and 73%, respectively. Emission performance of CHD234V8 diesel engine met the non-road stage III emissions regulation after optimization.
Design and performance optimization of diesel engine waste heat recovery methanol reforming hydrogen generation system

Abstract:A shell-and-tube Methanol Steam Reformer (MSR) system was designed for diesel engines. The effects of structural and operational parameters of the spiral baffles in the methanol reformer on heat transfer and hydrogen production performance were investigated. Additionally, a multi-objective optimization using response surface methodology was conducted to study the interactive effects of spacing and thickness, as well as liquid hourly space velocity and steam–methanol ratio, on the methanol conversion rate, hydrogen concentration and hydrogen production. The results indicated that reducing the baffle spacing and increasing the baffle thickness further improved heat transfer efficiency. Optimal conditions were achieved at a spacing of 30 mm and a thickness of 2 mm, resulting in a methanol conversion rate of 64.2 %. Increasing the steam–methanol ratio from 0.5 to 2 increased the methanol conversion rate from 50.6 % to 79.7 %, with a subsequent decrease in hydrogen concentration. Increasing the liquid hourly space velocity from 635 h −1 to 1905 h −1 significantly reduced the methanol conversion rate from 94.5 % to 64.2 %, but the hydrogen production increased from 0.111 mol/s to 0.228 mol/s. Optimization results indicate that the liquid hourly space velocity and steam–methanol ratio have a greater influence on the hydrogen production efficiency of the methanol reformer.

Abstract:In order to avoid the production of sulfates and nitrates in marine diesel engines that burn sulfur-containing fuels, the operating temperature of their high-pressure selective catalytic reduction (HP-SCR) systems should be higher than 320 °C. For marine low-speed diesel engines, only the pre-turbine exhaust gas temperature can meet this requirement under specific conditions, with the main engine modulation method helping to increase the exhaust gas temperature. However, the main engine modulation method brings down the power output and fuel economy of the main engine and causes the matching problem of the turbine and the other devices with the main engine. The original engine model of the marine low-speed diesel engine and the high-pressure SCR system configuration model have been constructed using one-dimensional simulation software. In addition, the performance of the high-pressure SCR system under the conditions of low-sulfur and high-sulfur exhaust gas was thoroughly analyzed. Moreover, the two main engine modulation schemes of the scavenging bypass and the turbine exhaust bypass of the original engine matching with the high-pressure SCR system were studied. The study found that the weighted average value of the NOx under the condition of low-sulfur exhaust gas met with the requirement of the IMO Tier III regulations when the low-speed diesel engine was matched with the high-pressure SCR system. However, the weighted average value of the NOx under the condition of high-sulfur exhaust gas was slightly higher than that required by the IMO Tier III regulation. In addition, the optimal main engine modulation scheme for this low-speed diesel engine was clarified by comparing the effects of the scavenging bypass and the turbine exhaust bypass modulation on the exhaust performance, and the working performance of the original engine. With an opening of 0.4 of the CBV valve under 25% engine load, the weighted average NOx of the original exhaust gas was 3.38 g/(kW·h), the power had decreased by 0.7%, and the fuel consumption had increased by 1.0%. Furthermore, when the EGB valve opening was 0.3, the weighted average value of NOx was 3.31 g/(kW·h), the power had reduced by 2.4% and the fuel consumption had increased by 2.5%. Both modulation scheme methods made the exhaust performance of the original engine meet the requirements of the IMO Tier III emission regulations, but the scavenging bypass modulation scheme had less impact on the original engine’s performance.

Abstract:Compared to diesel, liquefied natural gas (LNG), often used as an alternative fuel for marine engines, comes with significant advantages in reducing emissions of particulate matter (PM), SOx, CO2, and other pollutants. Promoting the use of LNG is of great significance for achieving carbon peaking and neutrality worldwide, as well as improving the energy structure. However, compared to diesel engines, medium- and high-speed marine LNG engines may produce higher methane (CH4) emissions and also have nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission issues. For the removal of CH4 and NOx from the exhaust of marine LNG engines, the traditional technical route of combining a methane oxidation catalyst (MOC) and an HN3 selective catalytic reduction system (NH3-SCR) will face problems, such as low conversion efficiency and high operation cost. In view of this, the technology of non-thermal plasma (NTP) combined with CH4-SCR is proposed. However, the synergistic mechanism between NTP and catalysts is still unclear, which limits the optimization of an NTP-CH4-SCR system. This article summarizes the synergistic mechanism of NTP and catalysts in the integrated treatment process of CH4 and NOx, including experimental analysis and numerical simulation. And the relevant impact parameters (such as electrode diameter, electrode shape, electrode material, and barrier material, etc.) of NTP reactor energy optimization are discussed. The work of this paper is of great significance for guiding the high-efficiency removal of CH4 and NOx for an NTP-CH4-SCR system.
