Abstract:Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and monolayer hexagonal BN (h-BN), are attractive for demonstrating fundamental physics in materials and potential applications in next-generation electronics. Atomic sheets containing hybridized bonds involving elements B, N and C over wide compositional ranges could result in new materials with properties complementary to those of graphene and h-BN, enabling a rich variety of electronic structures, properties and applications. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of large-area atomic layers of h-BNC material, consisting of hybridized, randomly distributed domains of h-BN and C phases with compositions ranging from pure BN to pure graphene. Our studies reveal that their structural features and bandgap are distinct from those of graphene, doped graphene and h-BN. This new form of hybrid h-BNC material enables the development of bandgap-engineered applications in electronics and optics and properties that are distinct from those of graphene and h-BN.
Sandwiched Epitaxy Growth of 2D Single-Crystalline Hexagonal Bismuthene Nanoflakes for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) bismuthene is predicted to possess intriguing physical properties, but its preparation remains challenging due to the high surface energy constraint. Herein, we report a sandwiched epitaxy growth strategy for the controllable preparation of 2D bismuthene between a Cu foil substrate and a h-BN covering layer. The top h-BN layer plays a crucial role in suppressing the structural transformation of bismuthene and compensating for the charge transfer from the bismuthene to the Cu(111) surface. The bismuthene nanoflakes present a superior thermal stability up to 500 °C in air, attributed to the passivation effect of the h-BN layer. Moreover, the bismuthene nanoflakes demonstrate an ultrahigh faradaic efficiency of 96.3% for formate production in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction, which is among the highest reported for Bi-based electrocatalysts. This study offers a promising approach to simultaneously synthesize and protect 2D bismuthene nanoflakes, which can be extended to other 2D materials with a high surface energy.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) lateral heterostructures host unconventional physical properties due to their controllable band-offset tuning and interfacial sensitive characteristic. The lattice mismatch results in the difficulties to construct the perfect atomic interface in such 2D lateral heterostructures, which in turn limits their desirable properties and performances in applications. In this work, strain-modulated 2D lateral pseudoheterogeneous structures are designed and realized in the single-component 2D BiOBr nanosheets by taking advantage of their strain-sensitive crystal and electronic structures. The pseudoheterogeneous interface without atomic mismatch can be feasibly modulated by local strain distribution, which exhibits similar local electronic band structure of corresponding heterostructures. Significant enhancement in charge separation at the pseudoheterostructure was demonstrated under visible light irradiation, which is given rise to the controllable electronic band alignment across the interface. The construction of the lateral pseudoheterostructure offers a feasible and promising way to build unprecedented 2D systems with exciting properties.

Abstract:Molecular-scale manipulation of electronic/ionic charge accumulation in materials is a preeminent challenge, particularly in electrochemical energy storage. Layered van der Waals (vdW) crystals exemplify a diverse family of materials that permit ions to reversibly associate with a host atomic lattice by intercalation into interlamellar gaps. Motivated principally by the search for high-capacity battery anodes, ion intercalation in composite materials is a subject of intense study. Yet the precise role and ability of heterolayers to modify intercalation reactions remains elusive. Previous studies of vdW hybrids represented ensemble measurements at macroscopic films/powders, which do not permit the isolation and investigation of the chemistry at individual 2-dimensional (2D) interfaces. Here, we demonstrate the intercalation of lithium at the level of individual atomic interfaces of dissimilar vdW layers. Electrochemical devices based on vdW heterostructures comprised of deterministically stacked hexagonal boron nitride, graphene (G) and molybdenum dichalcogenide (MoX2; X = S, Se) layers are fabricated, enabling the direct resolution of intermediate stages in the intercalation of discrete heterointerfaces and the extent of charge transfer to individual layers. Operando magnetoresistance and optical spectroscopy coupled with low-temperature quantum magneto-oscillation measurements show that the creation of intimate vdW heterointerfaces between G and MoX2 engenders over 10-fold accumulation of charge in MoX2 compared to MoX2/MoX2 homointerfaces, while enforcing a more negative intercalation potential than that of bulk MoX2 by at least 0.5 V. Beyond energy storage, our new combined experimental and computational methodology to manipulate and characterize the electrochemical behavior of layered systems opens up new pathways to control the charge density in 2D (opto)electronic devices.

Abstract:The broken symmetry along with anomalous defect structures and charging conditions at multiferroics surface can alter both crystal structures and electronic configurations, bringing in emergent physical properties. Extraordinary surface states are induced into original mutually coupled order parameters in such strongly correlated oxides, which flourish in diverse properties but remain less explored. Here, we report the peculiar surface ferroelectric states and reconfigurable functionalities driven by the relaxation of surface and consequent changes in O 2p and Y 4d orbital (p-d) hybridization within a representative hexagonal multiferroics, YMnO3. An unprecedented surface reconstruction is achieved by tailored p-d hybridization coupling with in-plane oxygen vacancies, which is atomically revealed on the basis of the advantages of state-of-the-art aberration-corrected (scanning) transmission electron microscopy. Further ab initio density functional theory calculations verify the key roles of in-plane oxygen vacancies in modulating polarization properties and electronic structure, which should be regarded as the atomic multiferroic element. This surface configuration is found to induce tunable functionalities, such as surface ferromagnetism and conductivity. Meanwhile, the controversial origin of improper ferroelectricity that is unexpectedly free from critical size has also been atomically unraveled. Our findings provide new insights into the design and implementation of surface chemistry devices by simply controlling the oxygen stoichiometry, greatly advance our understandings of surface science in strongly correlated oxides, and enable exciting innovations and new technological functionality paradigms.
Highly Integrated Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Architectures by Non-Covalent Exfoliation of Graphite and Assembly with Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

Abstract:Herein, we report an easy, straight forward, and versatile approach to build 0D/2D hybrid nanoparticle/graphene architectures by means of non-covalent chemistry and a modified Layer-by-Layer assembly. Three water soluble perylene diimides were employed to efficiently exfoliate pristine graphite into positively charged few- and multilayer graphene flakes. Further combination of these cationic building blocks with anionic zinc oxide nanoparticles led to the formation of tailor-made hybrid films via electrostatic and van der Waals interactions. These supramolecular hybrid nano-structures were thoroughly characterized by UV/Vis and Raman spectroscopy, AFM as well as electron microscopy, showing outstanding long-range homogeneity and high integrity in the centimetre-scale, uniform nanometric thickness between 60-100 nm and a close contact between the different building blocks. Due to their straightforward assembly. These architectures can be considered as promising candidates for numerous advanced applications especially in the field of energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:At present, the technological groundwork of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) hetero-layered structures realized by successive thin film epitaxial growth is in principle constrained by lattice matching prerequisite as well as low yield and expensive production. Here, we artificially coordinate ultrathin 2D hetero-layered metal chalcogenides via a highly scalable self-surface charge exfoliation and electrostatic coupling approach. Specifically, bulk metal chalcogenides are spontaneously exfoliated into ultrathin layers in a surfactant/intercalator-free medium, followed by unconstrained electrostatic coupling with a dissimilar transition metal dichalcogenide, MoSe2, into scalable hetero-layered hybrids. Accordingly, surface and interfacial-dominated photocatalysis reactivity is used as an ideal testbed to verify the reliability of diverse 2D ultrathin hetero-layered materials that reveal high visible-light photoreactivity, efficient charge transfer and intimate contact interface for stable cycling and storage purposes. Such a synthetic approach renders independent thickness and composition control anticipated to advance the development of ‘design-and-build’ 2D layered heterojunctions for large-scale exploration and applications.

From One to Two: In Situ Construction of an Ultrathin 2D-2D Closely Bonded Heterojunction from a Single-Phase Monolayer Nanosheet

Abstract:Despite the many attempts to build ultrathin 2D-2D heterojunctions via wet chemical methods, the resulting composite materials reported to date suffer from poor interfacial bonding and/or complexity of the synthetic protocols. Encouraged by the structural compatibility of Bi2WO6 and Bi2O2S, both of which are 2D semiconductors sharing a rather similar structural unit of a [Bi2O2]2+ slice in their crystal structures, we have successfully fabricated an ultrathin nanosheet with a tightly bonded 2D-2D heterojunction between the two components by facilely joining the [Bi2O2]2+ and [S]2- slices using a simple two-step hydrothermal method. Such a Bi2WO6-Bi2O2S 2D-2D heterojunction has a five-alternating-layer (Bi2O2S-Bi2WO6-Bi2O2S-Bi2WO6-Bi2O2S) sandwich structure and a thickness down to ca. 5 nm and was obtained by simply growing the Bi2O2S layer in situ on the surface of monolayer Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The judicious combination of Bi2WO6 and Bi2O2S through a 2D-2D heterojunction not only extended light absorption in the visible range but also significantly enhanced photo(electro)chemical water splitting efficiencies in comparison to the bare Bi2WO6 nanosheets alone due to the close-bonding-promoted interfacial charge separation. Our findings provide a viable methodology to build a host of nanomaterials with closely bonded 2D nanosheets, which can be used as photocatalysts and electrocatalysts, among others.

Abstract:The preparation of large-area, high-quality, two-dimensional metallene films often necessitates the use of high-vacuum equipment due to the high surface tension of metals. Herein, we report the growth of large-area coastline-like fractal bismuthene films with intrinsic statistical self-similarity through an interlayer-confined alloying dissolution-precipitation epitaxy method via the construction of a sandwich structure of h-BN/Cu/Mo foil with a nanoconfined space and a sequential dissolution-precipitation process. The resulting bismuthene film manifests a coastline-like fractal feature with a tunable fractal dimension and thickness regulated by the thickness of Cu film. The fractal bismuthene film can be seamlessly transferred to other substrates without incurring oxidation, impurity residues, or structural damage. A 50-nm-thick bismuthene film exhibits semimetallic properties, while an 8-nm-thick bismuthene film behaves as a p-type semiconductor, confirming a typical metal-to-semiconductor transition behavior. This study suggests the significant potential of interlayer-confined precipitation epitaxy strategy in producing large-area two-dimensional metallene films, thereby advancing the development of cutting-edge nanodevices.

Abstract:Heterostructure materials form the basis of much of modern electronics, from transistors to lasers and light-emitting diodes. Recent years have seen a renewed focus on creating heterostructures through the vertical integration of two-dimensional materials, including graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). However, fundamental challenges associated with materials processing have limited material quality and impeded scalability. We demonstrate a method to convert sub-nanometer metal films deposited on silicon and sapphire into TMDC heterostructures through vapor-phase processing. The resulting heterostructures and superlattices exhibit novel properties compared with stand-alone TMDCs, including reduced bandgap, enhanced light-matter coupling, and improved catalytic performance. This robust and scalable synthetic method provides new opportunities to generate a wide range of artificially stacked 2D superlattices with controlled morphology and composition.

Abstract:Conventional polymer additives have a substantial impact on synthetic inorganic chemistry, but critical shortcomings remain; for example, low solubility in organic solvents and potential thermodynamic aggregates. Poly(ionic liquid)s have now been used as efficient additives that enable a high level control of bismuth sulfide crystals with significant size and morphological diversities. The bismuth sulfides exhibit tunable band structure as a result of the quantum size effects. Moreover, poly(ionic liquid)s are able to couple with as-synthesized bismuth sulfides chemically and endow a modified surface electronic structure, which allows resultant products to possess outstanding electrocatalytic performance for water oxidation, although its commercial counterpart is catalytically inert.
Robust Sandwiched B/TM/B Structures by Metal Intercalating into Bilayer Borophene Leading to Excellent Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Bilayer borophene, very recently synthesized on Ag and Cu, possesses extremely flat large surface and excellent conductivity. Besides, the van der Waals gap of bilayer borophene can be intercalated by metal atoms, thereby tailoring the properties of bilayer borophene. Herein, we propose that sandwiched B/TM/B (TM=Co, Ni, Cu, Pd) could be a new 2D formation by transiton metal atoms intercalated into bilayer borophene network, it is quiet robust with both energetic, structural and thermal stability, and exhibits heat resistance of at least 1300 K. Besides, it is novel platform for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The interecalation metal atom serves as single-atomic catalyst, which acting the nonmetal boron layers. Beyond that, the transtion metal is protected by outside boron layers from being corroded by acidic/alkaline solution. B/Cux/B, B/Pdx/B and B/Alx/B with different metal coverage exhibit defect-independent extremely low HER free energy in the range of -0.162 ~ 0.179 eV, -0.134 ~ 0.183 eV and -0.082 ~ 0.086 eV which are comparable to noble metal Pt. Combining excellent conduction, high structural and thermal stability, low resistance to intercalated behaviour, effortless water splitting process, excellent defect-independent catalytic performance, cheapness and abundance of raw materials, free of corrodation, 2D sandwiched B/TM/B (TM=Co, Ni, Cu, Pd) is believed to promising for electrocatalytic HER applications.

Sandwiched Epitaxy Growth of Single-Crystalline Hexagonal Bismuthene Nanoflakes for Highly Selective Electrocatalytic CO2-to-formate Conversion

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) bismuthene material was predicted to possess intriguing physical and electrical properties, such as high-temperature quantum-spin Hall effect, topological edge state, high carrier mobility, and tunable band gap. However, epitaxial growth of single-crystalline 2D bismuthene nanoflakes inevitably requires a high vacuum environment, primarily due to the high surface energy constraints of Bi. Herein, we report the growth of 2D single-crystalline hexagonal bismuthene nanoflakes on Cu foil substrate at atmospheric pressure by chemical vapor deposition. Based on first-principles calculations, the structural transformation of Bi on Cu foil can be suppressed by introducing the top h-BN layer, which potentially compensates for the charge transfer from Bi to the Cu (1 1 1) surface. The sandwich structure is identified by cross-sectional SEM and EDS characterization, demonstrating that bismuthene nanoflakes are sandwiched between the h-BN film and Cu foil. Benefiting from the encapsulation of the top h-BN layer, bismuthene nanoflakes also exhibit excellent thermal stability in ambient air even after annealing at 500 °C for 10 min. For further practical application, bismuthene nanoflakes are utilized for electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR). These bismuthene nanoflakes demonstrate remarkable ability in converting CO2 to formic acid with a Faradaic efficiency of 96.3% at ‒1.0 V (vs. RHE) and exhibit great catalytic stability with a Faradaic efficiency of over 90% in 15 h CO2RR tests. The ultrathin 2D feature of as-prepared bismuthene nanoflakes may result in abundant CO2 adsorption sites and stabilize the intermediate *OCHO, finally favoring the formation of HCOOH. We provide an effective strategy to simultaneously synthesize and passivate 2D single-crystalline bismuthene nanoflakes towards CO2RR, which is expected to be applied to other 2D materials with strong metallic growth behavior.

Abstract:Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (2D h-BN) is being extensively studied in optoelectronic devices due to its electronic and photonic properties. However, the controlled optimization of h-BN's insulating properties is necessary to fully explore its potential in energy conversion and storage devices. In this work, we engineered the surface of h-BN nanoflakes via one-step in situ chemical functionalization using a liquid-phase exfoliation approach. The functionalized h-BN (F-h-BN) nanoflakes were subsequently dispersed on the surface of TiO 2 to tune the TiO 2 /QDs interface of the optoelectronic device. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices based on TiO 2 /F-h-BN/QDs with optimized addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and scattering layers showed 46% improvement compared to the control device (TiO 2 /QDs). This significant improvement is attributed to the reduced trap/carrier recombination and enhanced carrier injection rate of the TiO 2 –CNTs/F-h-BN/QDs photoanode. Furthermore, by employing an optimized TiO 2 –CNTs/F-h-BN/QDs photoanode, QDs-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) yield an 18% improvement in photoconversion efficiency. This represents a potential and adaptability of our approach, and pathway to explore surface-engineered 2D materials to optimize the interface of solar energy conversion and other emerging optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In the wide world of 2D materials, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) holds a special place due to its excellent characteristics. In addition to its thermal, chemical and mechanical stability, hBN demonstrates high thermal conductivity, low compressibility, and wide band gap around 6 eV, making it a promising candidate for many groundbreaking applications and more specifically in van der Waals heterostructures. Millimeters scale hexagonal boron nitride crystals are obtained through a disruptive dual method (PDC/PCS) consisting in a complementary coupling of the Polymer Derived Ceramics route and a Pressure-Controlled Sintering process. In addition to their excellent chemical and crystalline quality, these crystals exhibit a free exciton lifetime of 0.43 ns, as determined by time-resolved cathodoluminescence measurements, confirming their interesting optical properties. To go further in applicative fields, hBN crystals are then exfoliated, and resulting Boron Nitride NanoSheets (BNNSs) are used to encapsulate transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Such van der Waals heterostructures are tested by optical spectroscopy. BNNSs do not luminesce in the emission spectral range of TMDs and the photoluminescence width of the exciton at 4K is in the range 2-3 meV. All these results demonstrate that these BNNSs are of high quality and relevant for future opto-electronic applications.

Millimeter-Scale Exfoliation of Hbn with Tunable Flake Thickness for Scalable Encapsulation

Abstract:As a 2D dielectric material, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is in high demand for applications in photonic, nonlinear optic, and nanoelectronic devices as an atomically flat and thin dielectric or encapsulation layer. Unfortunately, the high-throughput preparation of macroscopic-scale hBN flakes with selective thickness is an ongoing challenge, limiting device fabrication and technological integration. Here, we use various metal thin films to prepare hBN flakes with millimeter-scale dimension, near-unity yields, and tunable flake thickness distributions from 1 to 7 layers. The single crystallinity and quality of the exfoliated hBN flakes are demonstrated with atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and second-harmonic generation. We further explore a possible mechanism for flake-thickness selectivity based on thin-film residual stress measurements and density functional theory calculations. We demonstrate that our exfoliated, large-area hBN flakes can be incorporated as encapsulating layers for MoSe2 monolayers to effectively protect against photodegradation. This method brings us one step closer to the high-throughput, mass production of hBN-based 2D photonic, optoelectronic, and quantum devices in the future.
2+δ-Dimensional Materials via Atomistic Z-Welding

Abstract:Pivotal to functional van der Waals stacked flexible electronic/excitonic/spintronic/thermoelectric chips is the synergy amongst constituent layers. However; the current techniques viz. sequential chemical vapor deposition, micromechanical/wet-chemical transfer are mostly limited due to diffused interfaces, and metallic remnants/bubbles at the interface. Inter-layer-coupled 2+δ-dimensional materials, as a new class of materials can be significantly suitable for out-of-plane carrier transport and hence prompt response in prospective devices. Here, the discovery of the use of exotic electric field ≈106 V cm- 1 (at microwave hot-spot) and 2 thermomechanical conditions i.e. pressure ≈1 MPa, T ≈ 200 °C (during solvothermal reaction) to realize 2+δ-dimensional materials is reported. It is found that Pz Pz chemical bonds form between the component layers, e.g., CB and CN in G-BN, MoN and MoB in MoS2 -BN hybrid systems as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. New vibrational peaks in Raman spectra (BC ≈1320 cm-1 for the G-BN system and MoB ≈365 cm-1 for the MoS2 -BN system) are recorded. Tunable mid-gap formation, along with diodic behavior (knee voltage ≈0.7 V, breakdown voltage ≈1.8 V) in the reduced graphene oxide-reduced BN oxide (RGO-RBNO) hybrid system is also observed. Band-gap tuning in MoS2 -BN system is observed. Simulations reveal stacking-dependent interfacial charge/potential drops, hinting at the feasibility of next-generation functional devices/sensors.

Abstract:Manipulating materials with atomic-scale precision is essential for the development of next-generation material design toolbox. Tremendous efforts have been made to advance the compositional, structural, and spatial accuracy of material deposition and patterning. The family of 2D materials provides an ideal platform to realize atomic-level material architectures. The wide and rich physics of these materials have led to fabrication of heterostructures, superlattices, and twisted structures with breakthrough discoveries and applications. Here, we report a novel atomic-scale material design tool that selectively breaks and forms chemical bonds of 2D materials at room temperature, called atomic-layer substitution (ALS), through which we can substitute the top layer chalcogen atoms within the 3-atom-thick transition-metal dichalcogenides using arbitrary patterns. Flipping the layer via transfer allows us to perform the same procedure on the other side, yielding programmable in-plane multi-heterostructures with different out-of-plane crystal symmetry and electric polarization. First-principle calculations elucidate how the ALS process is overall exothermic in energy and only has a small reaction barrier, facilitating the reaction to occur at room temperature. Optical characterizations confirm the fidelity of this design approach, while TEM shows the direct evidence of Janus structure and suggests the atomic transition at the interface of designed heterostructure. Finally, transport and Kelvin probe measurements on MoXY (X,Y=S,Se; X and Y corresponding to the bottom and top layers) lateral multi-heterostructures reveal the surface potential and dipole orientation of each region, and the barrier height between them. Our approach for designing artificial 2D landscape down to a single layer of atoms can lead to unique electronic, photonic and mechanical properties previously not found in nature.

Abstract:Despite the unique properties of bismuth (Bi), there is a lack of two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures between Bi and other functional 2D materials. Here, a coherent strategy is reported to simultaneously synthesize rhombohedral phase Bi nanoflakes and bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanosheets. The delicate balance between several reactions is mediated mainly for the reduction and chlorination in the chemical vapor transport (CVT) process. The Bi-BiOCl lateral heterostructures have been constructed via the coalescence of the two different 2D nanostructures. The characteristics of ambipolar conducting Bi and insulator-like BiOCl are elaborated by scanning microwave impedance microscopy (sMIM). This work demonstrates a way to construct a 2D Bi nanostructure in junction with its oxyhalide.
