Abstract:The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of Tooth Mousse (TM) application, smear layer removal, and storage time on resin-dentin microtensile bond strength (µTBS). Dentin specimens were divided into two groups: (1) smear layer covered; (2) smear layer removed using 15% EDTA for 90 s. In each group, half the specimens were treated once with TM for 60 min. After bonding procedures using a two-step self-etching adhesive (Clearfil SE Bond (CSE); Kuraray Medical, Tokyo, Japan), an all-in-one adhesive (G-Bond (GB); GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan), and a total-etch adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2 (SB); 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA), the specimens were stored for 3 d or 6 months in deionized water at 37 °C, and µTBS was tested and analyzed. With the exception of SB (no TM application) and GB, the μTBS was significantly increased for CSE and SB using EDTA pre-conditioning and 3 d of storage (P≤0.001). Bond strength of GB decreased significantly when using EDTA (3 d storage, P<0.05). TM application only increased the μTBS of GB (no EDTA) and SB (with EDTA) after 3 d (P≤0.02). Comparing the adhesives after 3 d of storage, CSE exhibited the greatest μTBS values followed by GB and SB (P≤0.02). The factors of adhesive, EDTA, and TM did not show any significant impact on μTBS when specimens were stored for 6 months (P>0.05). The additional application of TM and EDTA for cavity preparation seems only to have a short-term effect, and no influence on µTBS of dentin bonds after a period of 6 months.

The Influence of Contamination and Different Cleaning Methods and the Effect of Plasma Treatment of CoCr Alloy on Tensile Bond Strength to Composite Resin

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the influence of contamination and different cleaning methods on resin bonding to cobalt-chro- mium (CoCr) alloy disks. Materials and methods: A total of 160 CoCr disks were divided into 3 groups. The first group (N = 64) was air abraded with alumina particles and contaminated with a silicone disclosing agent and saliva; the second group (N = 64) was air abraded but not contaminated; the third group (N = 32) was neither air abraded nor contaminated. The first two groups were di- vided into 4 subgroups (N = 16) according to the cleaning method: ultrasonic bath in 99% isopropanol, use of a cleaning suspension of zirconium oxide particles, use of a cleaning suspension based on 10-MDP salt, and treatment with atmo- spheric plasma. The third group was divided into 2 subgroups (N = 16): treatment with atmospheric plasma and no treat- ment. All CoCr specimens were bonded to plexiglas tubes filled with a bonding resin that contained phosphate monomer. Tensile bond strength (TBS) was examined by tensile testing after 3 and 150 days of water storage plus 37,500 thermal cy- cles (N = 8). Results: After contamination, TBS was significantly reduced after 150 days of water storage. Groups without air abrasion showed initially low TBS and debonded spontaneously after 150 days of water storage. Conclusion: None of the cleaning methods was able to remove saliva and silicone disclosing agent on CoCr-alloy sur- faces. Surface activation by plasma treatment has no long-term effect on the bond strength.
Effects of Different Surface Treatments on Ceramic Repairs with Composite.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To compare different surface treatments of lithium disilicate-based ceramic on bond strengths to composite.METHODS:Lithium disilicate-based ceramic microbars (1 mm × 1 mm × 6 mm) were produced and abraded using diamond (D) or CoJet sandblasting (C), etched using phosphoric acid (P) or hydrofluoric acid (H) and silanised (S). A total of 12 surface treatments were adopted: D, DP, DH, DS, DPS, DHS, C, CP, CH, CS, CPS and CHS. An adhesive resin (XP Bond) was then applied and a composite build-up was placed. All specimens were thermocycled 5,000 times and submitted to microtensile bond strength test (μTBS). Results were analysed using one-way analysis of variance and the Dunnett T3 test. Stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the failure modes.RESULTS:Surface roughening, acid etching and silanisation all have a significant influence on the ceramic-composite bond durability. Groups DH (30.7 ± 6.5 MPa), DHS (32.0 ± 8.2 MPa), CH (27.2 ± 4.5 MPa) and CHS (29.2 ± 5.5 MPa) showed the highest μTBS statistically. Groups DS (11.5 ± 3.0 MPa) and DPS (9.7 ± 2.2 MPa) had higher μTBS than groups D (4.5 ± 2.9 MPa) and DP (5.2 ± 3.0 MPa), while groups C (1.7 ± 0.7 MPa), CS (1.7 ± 0.9 MPa), CP (1.7 ± 0.6 MPa) and CPS (1.7 ± 1.1 MPa) showed the lowest μTBS.CONCLUSION:Hydrofluoric acid etching was effective in improving the bond strength of composite to lithium disilicate-based ceramic, regardless of the method of surface roughening and silanisation.
Self-etching primer versus hydrofluoric acid and air-abrasion: effects on flexural and resin bond strengths of resin-based CAD/CAM material

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the effect of self-etching primer (Monobond Etch & Prime; MEP), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and air-abrasion (A) protocols on shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement and flexural strength (FS) of nanoparticle-filled resin-based CAD/CAM material. Bar- and rectangular-shaped specimens ( n = 130 for each) were obtained from a resin-based material (Cerasmart 270). The specimens were divided into 13 subgroups according to surface treatments: Control (C); HF for 60, 90, and 120 s; MEP for 60, 90, and 120 s; air-abrasion for 10, 15, and 20 s; air-abrasion followed by HF; air-abrasion followed by MEP; HF followed by MEP. Surface roughness (Ra) values were measured using a profilometer (Surftest SJ-210) by applying 9 readings per specimen. One specimen per group was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM; Multimode 8) in a 20 μ m × 20 μm area, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM; EVO LS-10) under ×1000 magnification. FS and SBS data were obtained using a universal test device (Marestek) at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Air-abraded groups showed the highest Ra (A10: 1.331 ± 0.213; A15: 1.409 ± 0.110; A20: 1.491 ± 0.111; A + HF: 1.415 ± 0.138; A + MEP: 1.309 ± 0.071 μm) and the lowest FS values (A10: 122.59 ± 16.80; A15: 118.94 ± 11.74; A20: 117.22 ± 11.18; A + HF: 114.42 ± 18.09; A + MEP: 128.98 ± 19.74 MPa). FS values of HF- and/or MEP-applied groups were statistically similar to the control group (C: 167.37 ± 27.02; HF60: 186.74 ± 30.66; HF90: 162.79 ± 29.31; HF120: 184.11 ± 17.18; MEP60: 171.98 ± 29.65; MEP90: 162.49 ± 20.38; MEP120: 173.55 ± 22.50; HF + MEP: 175.09 ± 21.64 MPa). SBS values of MEP-applied groups were higher than those of HF-etched groups with the same duration. Significant differences in SBS values were found after etching protocols with different durations (HF60: 4.14 ± 0.64; HF90: 4.48 ± 0.33; HF120: 6.76 ± 1.65; MEP60: 6.24 ± 1.23; MEP90: 9.92 ± 1.25; MEP120: 10.22 ± 1.27 MPa). Prolonged MEP application (90 s and 120 s) can be the preferred surface treatment for resin-based CAD/CAM materials. However, air-abrasion may adversely affect its mechanical properties.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to explore the effect of different surface treatments and bonding types on elemental composition and bond strength of dentin. Under water cooling, 1.5 mm of tooth structure containing just dentin was cut from 39 extracted human molars. Dentin surfaces were untreated (control) or treated by erbium: yttrium aluminum garnet or femtosecond laser ( n = 13, each). One sample from each group underwent scanning electron microscopy. Then, dentin surfaces were bonded by Clearfil SE Bond or Clearfil SE Protect ( n = 6, each). Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was performed both after surface treatment and bonding application. The dual-polymerized resin cement was applied to dentin surfaces with a special teflon mold (diameter:3 mm × height:3 mm). After polymerization of the resin cement, shear force was applied at the resin cement-dentin interface. Elemental composition value (weight%) of dentin after surface treatment was analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the difference value in pre and post-bonding elemental composition by two-way ANOVA. Paired t -tests were executed to compare the weight% values of each element before and after each bonding application. Bond strength was analyzed by two-way ANOVA. The post-hoc test was Tukey's honest significant difference test. Both laser treatments increased the mineral content of dentin, compared to the controls ( P <0.05). Application of bonding agents decreased the mineral content of dentin compared to the surface treated dentin. Bond strength was unaffected by either surface treatment or bonding type ( P >0.05). For resin cementation, either surface treatment is suitable. After laser treatment, Clearfil SE Bond is recommended over Clearfil SE Protect.

Abstract:We present the absolute frequency measurement of the transition 1S<inf>0</inf> – 3P<inf>0</inf> at 578 nm in ytterbium 171 realized in an optical lattice frequency standard relative to the cryogenic caesium fountain ITCsF2. The measurement result is 518 295 836 590 863.59(31) Hz with a relative standard uncertainty of 5.9 × 10−16. A contribution of 1.6 × 10−16 is coming from the ytterbium clock and we are working to reduce this contribution to the 1 × 10−17 level.
[Tone recognition ability for post-lingually deafened cochlear implant users using pitch information].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The present study was aimed to assess the ability of tone recognition performance for postlingually deafed cochlear implanted adults using no-duration tone test materials. METHOD Sixteen cochlear implanted users have used their devices at least six months. Ten monosyllabic syllables were selected, and combined with four lexical tones which were made up of 40 tone tokens. Then, these original words were recorded using one adult male and one adult female native Beijing Mandarin speaker. The speakers were asked to record these 40 monosyllabic words multiple times, and the 80 tokens in which the durations of four tones in each monosyllabic word were within 5 ms precision were chosen as the original tone tokens. The subjects were asked to perform a four alternative forced-choice study and select the tone they had heard. RESULT The mean score of lexical tone perception tasks for 16 cochlear implanted users is (70.7 ± 22.0)%, and Tone 4 was the easiest to perceive, while Tone 2 was the hardest for cochlear implanted subjects to perceive. Tone 1 was more often misperceived as Tone 2 relative to other tones. Tone 2 was more often misperceived as Tone 1 and 3. Tone 3 was more often misperceived as Tone 2. The tone perception performance was positively correlated with duration of hearing aid use. CONCLUSION Duration cues may impact on the ability of tone recognition performance for cochlear implant subjects, especially for tone 3. Due to the limited ability for cochlear implant subjects on pitch perception, tone l and tone 2, and tone 2 and tone 3 are most often confused with each other without duration cues. The experience of hearing aid use may benefit for postlingual deafness cochlear implant recipients on tone perception performance.
Effect of silver diamine fluoride and ammonium hexafluorosilicate applications with and without Er:YAG laser irradiation on the microtensile bond strength in sound and caries-affected dentin

Abstract:Background and objective: Cariostatic and preventive agents are applied to create caries-resistant dentin surfaces and may affect subsequent resin bonding. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different agents with and without Er:YAG laser irradiation on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of resin composite to sound dentin (SD) and caries-affected dentin (CAD), and to assess the morphological and chemical changes in the specimens. Materials and methods: Ninety-six extracted molar teeth were divided into a control group (deionized water) and two experimental groups (ammonium hexafluorosilicate [SiF], silver diamine fluoride [SDF]), that subdivided according to different conditions (SD, CAD, SD+laser irradiation, CAD+laser irradiation). After treatment procedures, the teeth were restored and the µTBS was tested with a universal testing machine. Morover, 144 teeth were prepared and after treatment modalities; morphological changes of the surface were investigated and elemental analyses were performed using scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: SDF and SiF applications reduced the µTBS values in both the SD and CAD subgroups (P < 0.05). Laser irradiation increased the µTBS values in the SiF group and the values were adversely affected in the SDF group (P < 0.05). Fluoride content of the specimens increased in all of the treatment groups, compared with the control group. Silver content was detected only in the SDF group, and silicon was detected only in the SiF group. Conclusions: The µTBS values of resin composite, surface morphology and chemical characteristics of dentin were affected by the material type, dentin condition and laser irradiation and the use of SiF and SDF solutions under the resin restorations do not seem appropriate.
Influence of Surface Treatments on the Shear Bond Strength of Repaired Composite Resin to Zirconia-based All-ceramic

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the bond strength between composite resin and zirconia core material.Methods:Sixty yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconium polycrystal(Y-TZP) blocks were fabricated and randomly assigned to six groups.Then five surface treatments were performed:acid etching with 8% hydrofluoric acid(H);airborne-particle abrasion(A);silica coating(S);H+S;A+S;no treatment(N) as a control group.Composite resin were bonded onto the Y-TZP rectanglars.After 24 hours at 37℃ distilled water storage,all Y-TZP/resin specimens were subjected to a shear load until fracture occurred.Scanning electron microscope(SEM) was used to inspect the surface characterization of different trentments.Result:The mean values in MPa±SD of shear bond strength test for group A(33.45±3.46)and AS(36.95±2.93)were statistically higher than other groups(P<0.01).No significant differences were detected in N,H,S and HS groups.And no statistically significance existed between silica coating groups and no-silica coating groups under the same treatment.SEM showed that acid etching with 8% hydrofluoric acid has no effect on Y-TZP surface structure but the Y-TZP surface could be modified significantly by airborne-particle abrasion.Conclusion:Airborne-particle abrasion was the most effective surface treatment in terms of bond strength increase;Acid etching with 8% hydrofluoric acid and silica coating had a poor influence on the bond strength between Y-TZP and repaired composite resin.
Improving the bonding stability between resin cements and zirconia-based ceramic using different surface treatments

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the effects of airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles or silicamodified alumina particles on the bond strength between zirconia and conventional MDP-based (Ph; Panavia F 2.0, Kuraray) or self-adhesive (SA; RelyX U200, 3M ESPE) resin cements. Materials and methods: Five surface treatments were evaluated: C = no surface treatment; AB = airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles (BIO-ART Dental Supplies and Equipment); ABP = AB combined with MDP-based primer (Alloy Primer, Kuraray); SS = airborne-particle abrasion with silica-modified alumina particles (CoJet, 3M ESPE) combined with silane (RelyX Ceramic Primer, 3M ESPE); and SSP = SS combined with MDP-based primer. The surface roughness (Ra) of the airborne particle-abraded samples (n = 5) was measured by a contact profilometer (Mitutoyo Surftest SJ-401, Mitutoyo). Cylinders of the resin cements tested were bonded to the surface-treated zirconia. The microshear test was performed by the application of a load with a wire loop parallel to the adhesive interface until debonding of the resin cement cylinders. The microshear bond strength (μSBS) of the samples was measured before and after being subjected to thermocycling (TC; 5°C to 55°C, 60 seconds dwell time for 3,000 cycles; MSCT, Marcelo Nucci). One-way (Ra) and two-way (μSBS) analysis of variance followed by Tukey post hoc test (α = .05) were used. Results: The SS (Ph: 12.6 MPa; Ph-TC: 6.37 MPa; SA: 11.8 MPa; SA-TC: 9.37) and SSP (Ph: 10.4 MPa; Ph-TC: 5.82 MPa; SA: 10.4 MPa; SA-TC: 10.0) surface treatments produced the highest surface roughness values (P < .001). The SS samples achieved the highest immediate bond strength for both resin cements. However, after TC, SA resin cement associated with any surface treatment produced the highest bond strength values. Conclusion: The self-adhesive resin cement promoted higher and more stable bond strength values when associated with a surface roughening method.
Adhesive bonding of resin composite to various Ni-Cr alloy surfaces using different metal conditioners and a surface modification system

Abstract:Purpose: This study evaluated the effect of three metal conditioners [Metal Photo Primer (MPP), Cesead II Opaque Primer (OP), Targis Link (TL)], and one surface modification system [Siloc (S)] on the shear bond strength (SBS) of a prosthetic composite material to Ni-Cr alloy. Materials and methods: Rivet-shaped specimens were cast, and three surface treatments were evaluated: Polishing (P); sandblasting with either 50 microm (50SB) or 250 microm (250SB) Al(2)O(3). All products were applied to half of the specimens, while the other half remained without the materials. Veneering resin composite (8-mm diameter, 2-mm thick) was applied and light-exposed for 90 seconds in a laboratory light-curing unit. The specimens were stored in water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours, and half were subjected to 500 thermal cycles consisting of water baths at 4 degrees C and 60 degrees C. All specimens were submitted to SBS test (0.5 mm/min) until failure. Failure patterns were determined using optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's test (preset alpha of 5%). Results: The SBS values of OP and TL groups were higher than those of MPP and S within the 50SB treatment (p < 0.05). No significant difference in SBS was noted between OP and TL as well as between MPP and S. On the other hand, no significant differences were found among conditioners within the 250SB group (p > 0.05). The SBS values of MPP, OP, and S from the 250SB group were higher than those from 50SB (p < 0.05). No significant difference in SBS was noted among most groups with conditioners after thermocycling. The only exception was observed for MPP, which showed an increase in SBS after thermocycling (p < 0.05). Differences in SBS were noted among the groups with conditioners (p < 0.05), and no significant difference in SBS was noted between TL and OP groups, which showed the highest values among all within the P group. No significant difference was noted between MPP and S. Debonded surfaces showed adhesive failures predominantly located between metal surface and opaque resin. Conclusions: The OP and TL conditioners and surface sandblasting with 250 microm Al(2)O(3) promoted the highest SBS between resin and the Ni-Cr metal surface.
The effect of thermocycling and dentine pre-treatment on the durability of the bond between composite resin and dentine.

Abstract:The high bond strength between restorative resin and dentine plays an important role in long-term performance of restorations in the oral environment. A variety of treatment techniques have been described to enhance the bond strength of composite resin to dentine. Unfortunately, few studies have reported available bond durability of adhesive resins to dentine. The purpose of this research was to study the shear bond strength of composite resin to dentine pre-treated with phosphoric acid, self-etching agent or Nd:YAP laser irradiation. The durability of bond strength between resin and dentine stored in the artificial saliva thermocycling between 5 and 55 degreesC was also evaluated. The scanning electron microscope was used to assess the treated-dentine surfaces. The mean value of the shear bond strength in the acid-etching group (18.2 +/- 4.9 MPa) was the highest among the three dentine treatments (self-etching system: 12.6 +/-3.0 MPa, Nd:YAP laser: 13.4 +/- 3.3 MPa) prior to thermocycling. After thermocycling, shear strength values of all treated dentines decreased with increasing number of the cycles. When subjected to 3000 thermocycles, the mean bond strengths of these pre-treated samples to composite resin became 9.1 +/- 1.4, 7.8 +/- 1.8, and 8.1 +/- 1.7 MPa for acid-etching, self-etching and laser-irradiation, respectively, with a significant reduction of 38-50%.
Effect of Selective Laser Melting Pure Titanium on Bond Strength of Titanium to Composite Resin by Different Surface Treatments

Abstract:Objective: To study the effectiveness of different surface treatments such as sandblasting and/or acid etching on the bond strength of selective laser melting pure titanium to composite resin. Methods: According to the ISO10477 standard, ninety-six selective laser melting pure titanium specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups and treated as follows: Group A1: grinding; Group B1: Sandblasting; Group C1: 4% hydrofluoric acid etching（HF）; Group D1: 4% HF acid etching after sandblasting（n=24）. Ninety-six forged titanium specimens from different processing technique were taken as the control groups, and the same surface treatments were done and recorded as A2, B2, C2, and D2（n=24）. After the surface treatments, a laser scanning confocal microscope was used to observe the surface morphology and roughness, the bond strength tests were carried out before and after the thermal cycles, and the mode of failures were observed by a stereo microscope. Results: The grinding group has the lowest roughness and the roughness of 4% HF acid etching after sandblasting was lower than that of sandblasting group（P＜0.05）. The bond strength of 4% HF acid etching after sandblasting group was about 4 times higher than that of grinding group（P＜0.05）, and the bond strength of the selective laser melting pure titanium specimens were（19.68±2.87） mPa and forged titanium specimens were（17.20±2.60） mPa. The bond strength between titanium and composite resin did not decrease significantly before and after the thermal cycling（P＞0.05）, and the durability was good. The fracture mode was mainly mixed fracture. Conclusion: Acid etching after sandblasting can effectively improve the strength of titanium to composite resin, which is one of the ideal methods for surface modification of selective laser melting titanium. It can significantly improve the bonding strength with composite resin and have good durability and can prolong the service life of the restoration to a certain extent at the same time. Selective laser melting titanium is a promising processing technology that can replace the traditional production of titanium for clinical applications.
Effect of titanium tetrafluoride solution on bonding strength of acid-etched dentin

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the effect of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF 4) solution on bonding strength of acid-etched dentin. Methods:Tooth crown dentin proximal to the pulp cavity was obtained from 24 freshly-extracted human third molars and randomly divided into 6 groups ( n=4 each) . Among them, 4 groups were modeled for artificial acid-etched dentin by means of acid-etching and mechanical friction. The other 2 groups were used as sound dentin controls. One each of the artificial acid-etched dentin groups and sound dentin control groups were randomly selected and studied under scanning electron microscope and microhardness tester to measure the surface morphology and hardness, and to evaluate the effectivity of the modeling for artificial acid-etched dentin. The other 3 groups of artificial acid-etched dentin and remaining group of healthy dentin were used for bonding test, re-assigned into 4 groups according to different treatments: etched dentin treated with 4.0% TiF 4 (4.0% TiF 4-ED group) , etched dentin treated with 2.5% TiF 4 (2.5% TiF 4-ED group) , untreated etched dentin (ED group) and sound dentin control (SD group) . All dentin samples were then bonded with a self-etching system (SE bond) , layered by AP-X composite resin with light-curing. Microtensile bonding strength (μTBS) test was used to measure the immediate bonding strength and to determine the fracture pattern. Results:The microhardness values of artificial acid-eched dentin and sound dentin were (56.92±5.27) HV and (60.19±4.52) HV, respectively, with significant difference between groups ( P<0.05) . Scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the artificial acid-etched dentin presented microscopic morphological characteristics consistent to natural acid etching. The μTBS of 4.0% TiF 4-ED group, 2.5% TiF 4-ED group, ED group and SD group were (28.94±8.04) MPa, (46.08±8.19) MPa, (20.39±7.46) MPa and (45.16±7.86) MPa, respectively. The μTBS did not differ significantly between the 2.5% TiF 4-ED group and the SD group ( P=0.529) , and both were higher than those in the 4.0% TiF 4-ED group and the ED group (all P<0.05) . The fracture patterns differed significantly among the 4 groups ( χ2=54.91, P<0.001) . In the 2.5% TiF 4-ED group, cohesive dentin fracture was the main cause, suggesting that the bonding strength may be higher than the mean measurements from the micro-tensile test. Conclusion:The bonding strength of acid-etched dentin is lower compared with sound dentin. 2.5% TiF 4 solution can significantly improve the bonding strength of acid-etched dentin.
Effects of different surface treatments on surface topography and bond strength in the repair of fiber‐reinforced dentin composite

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different surface treatments on the repair bond strength between a fiber‐reinforced dentin composite and a posterior composite. Methods Forty fiber‐reinforced dentin composite resin blocks (4 mm × 4 mm × 4 mm) were separated into eight groups (n = 5) according to the surface preparation methods: (G1) negative control group, (G2) adhesive application, (G3) 50% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) application, (G4) 50% DMSO + adhesive application, (G5) 37% phosphoric acid etch + adhesive application, (G6) air abrasion + adhesive application, (G7) 37% phosphoric acid etch + 50% DMSO application + adhesive application, and (G8) air abrasion +50% DMSO application + adhesive application group. The composite surfaces were repaired in two layers with a posterior composite. Composite sticks were subjected to a micro tensile bond strength (μTBS) test. Fractured surfaces were evaluated using a stereomicroscope (×25). Short fiber‐reinforced composite samples' surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Shapiro Wilk, one‐way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD tests were used for statistical evaluation. Results The highest average (μTBS) values were observed in G8, whereas the lowest mean μTBS values were evident in the G1 group. Statistically significant μTBS values were found in all adhesive‐applied groups when compared with the negative control group. Notably, the application of 50% DMSO without adhesive did not lead to a statistically significant increase in μTBS values. SEM images demonstrated that acid etching partially eliminated residues on the composite surface, while air abrasion had a detrimental effect on the integrity of fiber structures. Conclusion In the repair of fiber‐reinforced dentin composite with a posterior composite, adhesive application is an effective approach. The treatment of 50% DMSO without adhesive did not confer a statistically significant advantage, and the supplemental use of acid etch or air abrasion did not show an additional benefit compared to adhesive‐only repairs. Clinical Significance Adhesive application emerges as a potent and effective strategy for the repair of bur‐roughened fiber‐reinforced dentin composites. With its limitations, the study highlights the efficacy of adhesive‐only repairs without the necessity for additional surface treatments.

Abstract:Background: Monobond Etch & Prime (MEP; Ivoclar) has a material-dependent effect on dental ceramics. This study evaluated the impact of MEP application time on the resin–ceramic shear bond strength (SBS) of lithium disilicate (LD) and advanced lithium disilicate (ALD) ceramics. Methods: LD and ALD discs were distributed into four groups (n = 20): no surface treatment; 5% HF etching followed by the application of a silane-containing primer (S); MEP applied for 40 s and maintained for 20 s; MEP applied for 2 min and maintained for 40 s. Resin–ceramic SBS was evaluated at 24 h and after thermocycling. The statistical analysis of SBS was performed by using the three-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons tests. Additional ceramic samples were prepared to assess the surface topography. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the SBS of the MEP groups (20 s and 2 min) and HF + S. However, only the HF + S and MEP (2 min) groups showed durable adhesion after thermocycling. MEP resulted in less distinct surface alterations compared with HF etching. Conclusion: Increasing the application time of MEP to 2 min resulted in more durable resin–ceramic adhesion compared with the application time (40 s) recommended by the manufacturer. The adhesion of resin–ceramic to LD and ALD did not significantly differ.

Activated Cdc42/Rac reconstitutes Fcepsilon RI-mediated Ca2+ mobilization and degranulation in mutant RBL mast cells.

Abstract:Antigen stimulation of mast cells via FcepsilonRI, the high-affinity receptor for IgE, triggers a signaling cascade that requires Ca(2+) mobilization for exocytosis of secretory granules during an allergic response. This study investigates critical signaling components by using mutant RBL mast cells that are defective in antigen-stimulated phospholipase Cgamma (PLCgamma) activation, as well as other signaling activities downstream of stimulated tyrosine phosphorylation. We show that the expression of activated versions of the Cdc42 or Rac1 GTPase restores antigen-stimulated Ca(2+) mobilization necessary for degranulation in these mutant cells. Wild-type Cdc42 and Rac1, as well as activated Cdc42 containing effector domain mutations, all fail to restore antigen-stimulated signaling leading to exocytosis. Expression of oncogenic Dbl, a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Cdc42 and Rac1, partially restores sustained Ca(2+) mobilization and degranulation, suggesting that activation of endogenous Cdc42 and/or Rac1 is impaired in the mutant cells. Overexpression of PLCgamma1 with either activated Cdc42 or Rac1 synergistically stimulates degranulation, consistent with a critical defect in PLCgamma activation in these cells. Thus, our results point to activation of Cdc42 and/or Rac1 playing an essential role in antigen stimulation of early events that culminate in mast cell degranulation.
Effects of Carbodiimide Dentin Surface Treatment on Resin-Dentin Bonding

Abstract:Purpose: To assess the effects of ethanol-based 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl-aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) dentin surface treatment on resin-dentin bonding and dentin collagen fibril biodegradation. Methods: Acid-etched dentin surfaces were pretreated with different concentrations of ethanol-based EDC solutions (0.01-2M) for 60 seconds, followed by two-step etch-and-rinse dentin adhesive application and resin composite bonding. Dentin surfaces pretreated with either ethanol alone or no pretreatment were used as controls. The specimens were subjected to microtensile bond strength testing after storage in 0.9% NaCl solution at 37 degrees C for either 24 hours or 90 days. Furthermore, demineralized dentin slabs with and without ethanol-based EDC pretreatment were exposed to a collagenase solution for 24 hours, and subsequent hydroxyproline release was measured using ELISA. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and multiple comparison tests at alpha=0.05. Results: The bond strength values were significantly lower for dentin surfaces pretreated with 1 and 2 M ethanol based EDC than for the control surfaces (P<0.05). The 0.01, 0.1, and 0.3 M ethanol-based EDC pretreated groups obtained significantly higher bond strength values at 90 days compared to controls. Hydroxyproline release measurements revealed that there were significantly lower levels released in the 0.3 and 1 M ethanol-based EDC pretreated specimens than for controls (P<0.05).

Abstract:Although the gut is often considered the motor of sepsis, the relation between systemic inflammation and intestinal permeability in humans is not clear. We analyzed intestinal permeability during experimental endotoxemia in humans. Before and during experimental endotoxemia (Escherichia coli LPS, 2 ng/kg), using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a permeability marker, intestinal permeability was analyzed in 14 healthy subjects. Enterocyte damage was determined by intestinal fatty acid binding protein. Endotoxemia induced an inflammatory response. Urinary PEGs 1,500 and 4,000 recovery increased from 38.8 ± 6.3 to 63.1 ± 12.5 and from 0.58 ± 0.31 to 3.11 ± 0.93 mg, respectively (P < 0.05). Intestinal fatty acid binding protein excretion was not affected by endotoxemia. The peak serum IL-10 concentrations correlated with the increase in PEG 1,500 recovery (r = 0.48, P = 0.027). Systemic inflammation results in an increased intestinal permeability. The increase in intestinal permeability is most likely caused by inflammation-induced paracellular permeability, rather than ischemia-mediated enterocyte damage.
