Abstract:Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is a crucial tool, through spin labelling, in investigations of the chemical structure of materials and of the electronic structure of materials associated with unpaired spins. ESR spectra measured in molecular systems, however, are established on large ensembles of spins and usually require a complicated structural analysis. Recently, the combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy with ESR has proved to be a powerful tool to image and coherently control individual atomic spins on surfaces. Here we extend this technique to single coordination complexes-iron phthalocyanines (FePc)-and investigate the magnetic interactions between their molecular spin with either another molecular spin (in FePc-FePc dimers) or an atomic spin (in FePc-Ti pairs). We show that the molecular spin density of FePc is both localized at the central Fe atom and also distributed to the ligands (Pc), which yields a strongly molecular-geometry-dependent exchange coupling.
The surface termination of a Fe (III) spin crossover molecular salt

Abstract:From a comparison of energy dispersive analyses of X-rays (EDAX), the known molecular stoichiometry and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), it is evident that the Fe(III) spin crossover salt [Fe(qsal)2Ni(dmit)2] has a preferential surface termination with the Ni(dmit)2 moiety. This preferential surface termination leads to a significant surface to bulk core level shift for the Ni 2p X-ray photoemission core level, not seen in the corresponding Fe 2p core level spectra. Inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES), thus provides some indication of the density of states resulting from the dmit2 = 1,3-dithiol-2-thione-4,5-dithiolato ligand unoccupied molecular orbitals.

Abstract:Absorption of electrolytes and water from the human rectum was quantified by sequential sampling of physiological solutions instilled into the rectum and by the method of continuous intraluminal perfusion. The absorptive function of the rectum measured by the perfusion technique was also compared with that of the entire large intestine. The rectum did not absorb sodium, chloride, or water from isotonic solutions, even after 90 minutes of exposure. The remainder of the colon effectively absorbed sodium, chloride, and water at a rate of approximately 1% of the infused load per minute of contact between perfusates and mucosa.

Abstract:Abstract Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is a crucial tool to determine the chemical structure of materials. ESR spectra measured in molecular systems, however, are established on large ensembles of spins and usually require complicated structural analysis. Recently, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) combined with ESR has been proven as a powerful tool to image and coherently control individual atomic spins on surfaces. Here, we extend this technique to demonstrate ESR on single organic molecules - iron phthalocyanine (FePc) - and investigate the magnetic interactions between a molecular spin and either another molecular or atomic spin. We show that the molecular spin density is not only localized at the central Fe atom, but also distributed to the outer ligands, yielding a strongly anisotropic exchange coupling. Our work opens the door for using molecules in nanoscale ESR studies and promises tuning magnetic interactions between non-localized spins via tailoring ligand field symmetry and strength.
Exploring the Coexistence of Spin States in [Fe-(tpy-ph)$_2$]$^{2+}$ Complexes on Au(111) using ab initio calculations

Abstract:In this work, we systematically study the electronic structure and stability of spin states of the [Fe-(tpy-ph)$_2$]$^{2+}$ molecule in both gas phase and on a Au(111) substrate using density functional theory +U (DFT+U) calculations. We find that the stability of the Fe$^{2+}$ ion's spin states is significantly influenced by the Hubbard U parameter. In the gas phase, the low-spin (LS, S=0) state is found to be energetically favorable for U(Fe) $\leq$ 3 eV, whereas the high-spin (HS, S=2) state is stabilized for U(Fe) > 3 eV. Interaction with the Au(111) substrate is found to elevate the critical U for the spin-state transition to 3.5 eV. Additionally, we perform L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) calculations based on time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) for both HS and LS states. The calculated XAS suggests that the HS state more closely aligns with the experimental observations, indicating the potential coexistence of the HS state as the initial state during the X-ray excitation process. These findings enrich our understanding of spin-state dynamics in [Fe-(tpy-ph)$_2$]$^{2+}$.

Abstract:Four one-dimensional heterobimetallic coordination polymers {Fe(pic)(2)[M(CN)(4)]}(n) (M = Pd-II (1) and Pt-II (2), pic = 2-picolylamine), and {Fe(pypz)(2)[M(CN)(4)]}(n) (M = Pd-II (3) and Pt-II (4), pypz = 2-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine) have been synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Single-crystal X-ray analyses show that all the compounds are 1D neutral zigzag chain structures in which the planar [M(CN)(4)](2-) anion acts as a mu(2)-bridging ligand, and the two pic/pypz molecules as chelating coligands. Examination of the intermolecular contacts in compounds 1-4 reveals the existence of the hydrogen bonding interactions involving the hydrogen donor groups of the pic and pypz ligands and the nitrogen atoms of the non-bridging cyanide groups of the [M(CN)(4)](2-) anions. Weak pi-pi interactions were also found to be important for the formation of the 3D structures of compounds 3 and 4. The SCO properties of all compounds were confirmed by the detailed structural analyses of the coordination environments of the Fe-II centres, DSC analyses, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit complete SCO behaviour with very narrow thermal hysteresis loops centred near the room temperature (T-1/2 down arrow = 270 K and T-1/2 up arrow = 272 K for 1 and T-1/2 down arrow = 272 K and T-1/2 up arrow = 274 K for 2), whereas 3 and 4 exhibit abrupt SCO at 186 and 180 K, respectively. Compared to the mononuclear species of the pic and pypz ligands, the SCO temperatures are adjusted by the different ligand field strength of the [M(CN)(4))](2-) units. The cooperativity from both the coordination bonds and supramolecular interaction leads to the observation of the hysteresis loops in the Fe-pic systems and the abrupt SCO transition in the Fe-pypz systems. Furthermore, the light-induced excited-spin-state trapping (LIESST) effect was observed for 2.

Abstract:A new family of neutral mononuclear iron(II) spin crossover (SCO) compounds, Fe(L¹⁻⁶)₂ (L¹⁻⁶ = N'-((pyridin-2-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (HL¹), N'-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)-benzohydrazide (HL²), N'-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (HL³), 2-hydroxy-N'-((pyridin-2-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (HL⁴), 2-hydroxy-N'-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)benzohydrazide (HL⁵), 2-hydroxy-N'-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (HL⁶)) with N₄O₂ donor sets have been synthesized from series tridentate Schiff base ligands with N,N,O donor sets. The investigation of magnetic properties of these compounds reveal that in the measured temperature range, compound 1 is in the high-spin (HS) state, and compound 3 and 6 are mainly in the low-spin (LS) state, whereas the other compounds exhibit various SCO properties: compound 2 undergoes a gradual incomplete SCO with characteristic temperature T(1/2) higher than 350 K; compound 4 exhibits a special stepwise thermally induced SCO occurring at ~150 K (smooth) and 200 K (two-steps, with T(S1↑/↓) = 204/202 K and T(S2↑/↓) = 227/219 K) with a mixture of the HS and LS states yielded below 100 K; compound 5 shows a gradual and complete LS↔HS SCO with characteristic temperature T(1/2) = 273 K. All the three SCO compounds show the LIESST (light induced exited spin state trapping) effect with different levels of photoconversion. To thoroughly analyze these behaviours, Mössbauer spectra and DSC of 4 and 5, crystal structures of all the compounds at 290 K and 5 in the LS state at 110 K were carried out, which confirmed the structural changes accompanying the spin transition. In addition, alkyl substitution effect on the ligand field was suggested for this system.

Abstract:Octahedrally coordinated spin crossover (SCO) FeII complexes represent an important class of switchable molecular materials. This study presents the synthesis and characterisation of a novel complex, [FeII(ppt-2Fph)2]0·2MeOH, where ppt-2Fph is a new asymmetric ionogenic tridentate planar ligand 2-(5-(2-fluorophenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)-6-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine. The complex exhibits a hysteretic thermally induced SCO transition at 285 K on cooling and at 293 K on heating, as well as light induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) at lower temperatures with a relaxation T(LIESST) temperature of 73 K. Single crystal analysis in both spin states shows that the compound undergoes an unusual partial (25%) reversible order-disorder of the asymmetrically substituted phenyl group coupled to the thermal SCO. The highly cooperative SCO transition, analysed by structural energy framework analysis at the B3LYP/6-31 G(d,p) theory level, revealed the co-existence of stabilising and destabilising energy variations in the lattice. The observed antagonism of intermolecular interactions and synchronous rotational disorder, which contributes to the overall entropy change, is suggested to be at the origin of the cooperative SCO transition

Abstract:A method is proposed to estimate the energetic and entropic effects of spins of neighbouring molecules on the spin transition of a mononuclear spin crossover (SCO) complex in a molecular crystal. Density functional theory (DFT) methods have been used to model the SCO material [FeII(Lnpdtz)2(NCS)2] (Lnpdtz = 2-naphthyl-5-pyridyl-1,2,4-thiadiazole) exhibiting numerous π-π interactions using a 2D arrangement of 15 molecules. The modelling considers only the effects in the crystallographical ac plane with a particularly pronounced stacking but paves the way for future work with 3D arrangements which are computational much more costly. It involves the optimisation and normal mode calculation of the molecules in a rigid matrix of both low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) neighbours. This procedure has been used to calculate the previously defined cooperativity parameter Hcoop (Rackwitz et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2013, 15 p. 15450). For [FeII(Lnpdtz)2(NCS)] we obtain Hcoop = 11 kJ mol-1, a value which is comparable to those found for 3D polynuclear spin crossover materials. A normal mode analysis of the optimised centrally located molecule indicates that the vibrational entropy of the spin transition is somewhat higher (5 J K-1 mol-1) for the LS to HS transition in the LS matrix than in the HS one. The calculations show that the interactions with the neighbours influence the low-frequency modes with wave numbers <65-70 cm-1. These cause the main difference in the vibrational entropy of the spin transition for the vicinity of high- and low-spin molecules. Furthermore, a deformation of the coordination sphere of the central molecule is observed when the spins of the surrounding centres are switched. This deformation is accompanied by a change in the equatorial Fe-N bond lengths.

Abstract:We present the synthesis of two new novel tetradentate ligands based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole, 2-(2-pyridyl)-5-[N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L TetraPy-ODA ) and 2-phenyl-5-[N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L TetraPh-ODA ). The ligands were used to prepare six mononuclear complexes [Fe II (L TetraPy-ODA )(NCE)] (C1-C3) and [Fe II (L TetraPh-ODA )(NCE)] ( C4-C6 ) where E = S, Se or BH 3 . In addition, the ligand L TetraPy-ODA was employed in the synthesis of a new di-nuclear complex [Fe 2 II (L TetraPh )](ClO 4 )4·1 CH 3 NO 2 ·1.5 H 2 O ( C7 ). Characterization of all complexes was carried out using single-crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. Magnetic susceptibility measurements, performed in the temperature range of 2-300 K using a SQUID magnetometer, revealed spin crossover behaviour exclusively in the mononuclear complexes C3 and C6 , in which two monodentate NCBH 3 co-ligands coordinate. The presence of the lattice solvent was found to be crucial to the spin transition property, with complex C3 exhibiting a switching temperature (T 1/2 ) of approximately 165 K and C6 approximately 194 K. The other four mononuclear complexes C1, C2, C4, C5 , as well as the dinuclear complex C7 are locked in the high spin state over the measured temperature range. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed on complexes C1-C6 to rationalise the observed magnetic behaviour, demonstrating the significant effect of the NCS, NCSe and NCBH 3 co-ligands ligands on the spin-crossover behaviour of the [Fe II (L)(NCE)] complexes.

Spin Excitations of High Spin Iron(II) in Metal-Organic Chains on Metal and Superconductor

Abstract:Many-body interactions in metal-organic frameworks are fundamental for emergent quantum physics. Unlike their solution counterpart, magnetization at surfaces in low-dimensional analogues is strongly influenced by magnetic anisotropy induced by the substrate and still not well understood. Here, we use on-surface coordination chemistry to synthesize on Ag(111) and superconducting Pb(111) an iron-based spin chain by using pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone precursors as ligands. Using low-temperature scanning probe microscopy, we compare their structures and low-energy spin excitations of coordinated Fe atoms with high S = 2 spin-state. Although the chain and coordination centers are identical on both substrates, the long-range spin-spin coupling due to a superexchange through the ligand observed on Ag is absent on Pb(111). We ascribe this reduction of spin-spin interactions on Pb to the depletion of electronic states around the Fermi level in the Pb(111) superconductor as compared to silver.

Chemical Manipulation of the Spin-Crossover Dynamics Through Judicious Metal-Ion Dilution

Abstract:In 2019, our groups described a unique FeII complex, [Fe(2MeL)(NCBH3)2] (2MeL = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine) possessing a low-spin ground state that is not easily accessible due to the extremely slow dynamics of the high-spin to low-spin phase transition. Herein, we report the successful chemical manipulation of this spin-crossover (SCO) process through controlled metal-ion dilutions. The emergence or suppression of the thermally induced SCO behavior was observed depending on the radius of the metal ion used for the dilution (NiII or ZnII). Reversible photo-switching has been confirmed in all mixed-metal complexes whether the low-spin state is thermally accessible. Remarkably, the dilution with ZnII metal ions stabilizes HS FeII complexes with complete suppression of the thermally induced SCO process without destroying the reversible photoswitchability of the material.

Abstract:Here, we explore the transport properties and simulate the spin-crossover (SCO) temperatures of two Fe(II) complexes by performing extensive density functional theory calculations combined with non-equilibrium Green's function technique. We find that two Fe(II) SCO complexes with the HS state display nearly perfect spin-filtering effect and the spin-down electrons govern the transport properties. Two examined Fe(II) SCO complexes display molecular switching behavior between the LS and HS states. The spin transition temperature is predicted to be 149 and 195 K for Fe(II) SCO complex with NCSe and NCBH3 coligands, respectively, which are close to the experimental values.

Abstract:Manipulating the transition temperature (T-1/2) of spin-crossover (SCO) complexes capable of fulfilling practical criteria through different synthetic strategies is one of the main focuses in the field of molecular magnetism. The reaction of the tricyanometallate precursor [(Tp*)Fe-III(CN)(3)](-) and Fe(II) salt with the "facially" tridentate ligand tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine oxide (TPPO) and NCE- anions afforded three isostructural {(Fe2Fe2II)-Fe-III} square complexes {[(Tp*)Fe-III(CN)(3)](2)[Fe-II(TPPO)](2)[NCE](2)}center dot Sol (E = S, Sol = 2CH(3)OH center dot 6H(2)O, 1; E = Se, Sol = 2MeCN center dot 2CH(2)Cl(2)center dot 2H(2)O, 2; E = BH3, Sol = 4CH(3)OH center dot 2MeCN, 3). Detailed structural analysis, variable-temperature IR analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurements and DFT calculations revealed that all compounds exhibit complete and one-step SCO behaviour between the {Fe-2(III),Fe-LS(2)II,HS} and {Fe-2(III),Fe-LS(2)II,LS} electronic states. As the ligand field increases from NCS- to NCSe- to NCBH3-, T-1/2 shifts dramatically from 214 to 250 to 288 K for 1, 2 and 3, respectively, demonstrating another effective way to tune the SCO properties of the [Fe-III-CN-Fe-II] systems through the introduction of NCE- co-ligands.
Structural insight into the cooperativity of spin crossover compounds

Abstract:Spin-crossover (SCO) compounds are promising materials for a wide variety of industrial applications. However, the fundamental understanding of their nature of transition and its effect on the physical properties are still being fervently explored; the microscopic knowledge of their transition is essential for tailoring their properties. Here an attempt is made to correlate the changes in macroscopic physical properties with microscopic structural changes in the orthorhombic and monoclinic polymorphs of the SCO compound Fe(PM-Bia)2(NCS)2 (PM = N-2'-pyridylmethylene and Bia = 4-aminobiphenyl) by employing single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetization and DSC measurements. The dependence of macroscopic properties on cooperativity, highlighting the role of hydrogen bonding, π-π and van der Waals interactions is discussed. Values of entropy, enthalpy and cooperativity are calculated numerically based on the Slichter-Drickamer model. The particle size dependence of the magnetic properties is probed along with the thermal exchange and the kinetic behavior of the two polymorphs based on the dependence of magnetization on temperature scan rate and a theoretical model is proposed for the calculation of the non-equilibrium spin-phase fraction. Also a scan-rate-dependent two-step behavior observed for the orthorhombic polymorph, which is absent for the monoclinic polymorph, is reported. Moreover, it is found that the radiation dose from synchrotron radiation affects the spin-crossover process and shifts the transition region to lower temperatures, implying that the spin crossover can be tuned with radiation damage.

Abstract:The great diversity and richness of transition metal chemistry, such as the features of an open d-shell, opened a way to numerous areas of scientific research and technological applications. Depending on the nature of the metal and its environment, there are often several energetically accessible spin states, and the progress in accurate theoretical treatment of this complicated phenomenon is presented in this Account. The spin state energetics of a transition metal complex can be predicted theoretically on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) or wave function based methodology, where DFT has advantages since it can be applied routinely to medium-to-large-sized molecules and spin-state consistent density functionals are now available. Additional factors such as the effect of the basis set, thermochemical contributions, solvation, relativity, and dispersion, have been investigated by many researchers, but challenges in unambiguous assignment of spin states still remain. The first DFT studies showed intrinsic spin-state preferences of hybrid functionals for high spin and early generalized gradient approximation functionals for low spin. Progress in the development of density functional approximations (DFAs) then led to a class of specially designed DFAs, such as OPBE, SSB-D, and S12g, and brought a very intriguing and fascinating observation that the spin states of transition metals and the SN2 barriers of organic molecules are somehow intimately linked. Among the many noteworthy results that emerged from the search for the appropriate description of the complicated spin state preferences in transition metals, we mainly focused on the examination of the connection between the spin state and the structures or coordination modes of the transition metal complexes. Changes in spin states normally lead only to changes in the metal-ligand bond lengths, but to the best of our knowledge, the dapsox ligand showed the first example of a transition-metal complex where a change in spin state leads also to changes in the coordination, switching between pentagonal-bipyramidal and capped-octahedron. Moreover, we have summarized the results of the thorough study that corrected the experimental assignment of the nature of the recently synthesized Sc3+ adduct of [FeIV(O)(TMC)]2+ (TMC = 1,4,8,11-tetramethylcyclam) and firmly established that the Sc3+-capped iron-oxygen complex corresponds to high-spin FeIII. Last, but not least, we have provided deeper insight and rationalization of the observation that unlike in metalloenzymes, where the FeIV-oxo is usually observed with high spin, biomimetic FeIV-oxo complexes typically have a intermediate spin state. Energy decomposition analyses on the trigonal-bypiramidal (TBP) and octahedral model systems with ammonia ligands have revealed that the interaction energy of the prepared metal ion in the intermediate spin state is much smaller for the TBP structure. This sheds light on the origin of the intermediate spin state of the biomimetic TBP FeIV-oxo complexes.

Abstract:Discrete spin crossover (SCO) tetranuclear cages are a unique class of materials that have potential use in next-generation molecular recognition and sensing. In this work, two new edge-bridged SCO Fe II 4 L 6 (L = 2,7-bis((( E )-pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)benzo[ lmn ] [3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2 H ,7 H )-tetraone) supramolecular cages with different counter anions: ClO 4 − ( 2 ) and CF 3 SO 3 − ( 3 ) were constructed via subcomponent self-assembly to investigate both solvent and anion influences on their magnetic properties and compare them to cage 1 with a BF 4 − anion. Pyridyl-hydrazone bidentate ligand scaffolds were employed to replace the 'classical' imidazole/thiazolyl-imine coordination units to induce SCO behaviour in these cages. 2 and 3 were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Magnetic susceptibilities of 1–3 and 1–3 ·desolvated indicate that the solvents' presence is in favor of the low-spin (LS) state. While different counter anions in 1–3 ·desolvated affect the spin-state configurations of the four Fe II metal centers. According to the 57 Fe Mössbauer spectral analysis, the spin-state distributions in 1–3 at 80 K are [2 high-spin (HS)–2LS], [1HS–3LS] and [2HS–2LS], respectively and density functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the reasons. These findings provide insights to regulate the spin-state versatility of SCO Fe II cage systems in the solid state.
