Abstract:[Fe(terpy)2]2+ (terpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) is a transition metal complex where the spin state is photoswitchable and where the properties of the metal-centered quintet excited state (5MC) can be tuned by substituting different Electron Withdrawing (EW) or Electron Donating (ED) groups on the 4' position of the terpyridine. To better understand the physics determining the photoswitching performance, a deeper insight into the positions of the relevant potential energy surfaces and the molecular structure of the 5MC state is needed. We present a structural investigation based on Time Resolved X-ray Solution Scattering (TR-XSS) by which we determine the average d(Fe-N) bond-length elongation following population of the 5MC state as well as the lifetime of this state in a series of seven modified [Fe(terpy)2]2+ systems in aqueous solution following photo-excitation. The analysis of the TR-XSS data is supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) calculations. The quintet state lifetime is determined to vary by more than a factor of ten (from 1.5 to 16 nanoseconds) based on the electron withdrawing/donating properties of the substituting group. Both the DFT calculations and the structural analysis of the experimental data show that the main photo-induced change in metal-ligand bond lengths Δd(Fe-N) is ~0.2 Å for all systems.

Abstract:Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is a crucial tool, through spin labelling, in investigations of the chemical structure of materials and of the electronic structure of materials associated with unpaired spins. ESR spectra measured in molecular systems, however, are established on large ensembles of spins and usually require a complicated structural analysis. Recently, the combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy with ESR has proved to be a powerful tool to image and coherently control individual atomic spins on surfaces. Here we extend this technique to single coordination complexes-iron phthalocyanines (FePc)-and investigate the magnetic interactions between their molecular spin with either another molecular spin (in FePc-FePc dimers) or an atomic spin (in FePc-Ti pairs). We show that the molecular spin density of FePc is both localized at the central Fe atom and also distributed to the ligands (Pc), which yields a strongly molecular-geometry-dependent exchange coupling.

Abstract:Homoleptic complexes [Fe(4bt) 3 ](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 1 ), [Fe(2bt) 3 ](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 2 ), and [Fe(3tpH) 3 ](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 3 ) were obtained by a reaction between the Fe(II) precursor salt and the corresponding thiazole-based bidentate ligand (L = 4bt = 4,4′-bithiazole, 2bt = 2,2′-bithiazole, 3tpH = 3-(thiazol-2-yl)pyrazole). X-ray crystal structure determination revealed crystallization of solvent-free complex 1 , a solvate 2 ·MeOH, and a co-crystal 3 ·2(3tpH). The crystal packing of all these complexes is dominated by one-dimensional interactions between the [Fe(L) 3 ] 2+ cations. These interactions are stronger in 2 ·MeOH and 3 ·2(3tpH), leading to cooperative and slightly hysteretic transitions between the high-spin and low-spin electronic configurations at ~235 K and 159 K, respectively. In contrast, weaker intermolecular interactions in 1 result in a gradual spin crossover above 300 K, with the maximum fraction of the HS state ~25% achieved at 400 K. Complexes 2 and 3 ·2(3tpH) exhibit light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) under irradiation with white light or a 532-nm laser at 5 K. After the photoexcitation, the trapped metastable HS state relaxes to the ground LS state with the average relaxation temperature of 81 K and 68 K, respectively. Examination of the relaxation dynamics by optical absorption spectroscopy on a single crystal of 3 ·2(3tpH) revealed sigmoidal shape of the relaxation curves at lower temperatures, attributed to cooperative effects, as well as a plateau at ~10% of the HS fraction at intermediate temperatures, hinting at a more complex mechanism for the relaxation of the LIESST phase in this material.

Abstract:In this work, we systematically study the electronic structure and stability of spin states of the [Fe-(tpy-ph)$_2$]$^{2+}$ molecule in both gas phase and on a Au(111) substrate using density functional theory +U (DFT+U) calculations. We find that the stability of the Fe$^{2+}$ ion's spin states is significantly influenced by the Hubbard U parameter. In the gas phase, the low-spin (LS, S=0) state is found to be energetically favorable for U(Fe) $\leq$ 3 eV, whereas the high-spin (HS, S=2) state is stabilized for U(Fe) > 3 eV. Interaction with the Au(111) substrate is found to elevate the critical U for the spin-state transition to 3.5 eV. Additionally, we perform L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) calculations based on time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) for both HS and LS states. The calculated XAS suggests that the HS state more closely aligns with the experimental observations, indicating the potential coexistence of the HS state as the initial state during the X-ray excitation process. These findings enrich our understanding of spin-state dynamics in [Fe-(tpy-ph)$_2$]$^{2+}$.

Recently, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) combined with ESR has been proven as a powerful tool to image and coherently control individual atomic spins on surfaces. Here, we extend this technique to demonstrate ESR on single organic molecules - iron phthalocyanine (FePc) - and investigate the magnetic interactions between a molecular spin and either another molecular or atomic spin. We show that the molecular spin density is not only localized at the central Fe atom, but also distributed to the outer ligands, yielding a strongly anisotropic exchange coupling. Our work opens the door for using molecules in nanoscale ESR studies and promises tuning magnetic interactions between non-localized spins via tailoring ligand field symmetry and strength.
Simulation of Ultrafast Excited-State Dynamics in Fe(II) Complexes: Assessment of Electronic Structure Descriptions

Abstract:The assessment of electronic structure descriptions utilized in the simulation of ultrafast excited-state dynamics of Fe(II) complexes is presented. Herein, we evaluate the performance of the RPBE, OPBE, BLYP, B3LYP, B3LYP*, CAM-B3LYP, and LC-BLYP (time-dependent) density functional theory (DFT/TD-DFT) methods in full-dimensional trajectory surface hopping (TSH) simulations carried out on linear vibronic coupling (LVC) potentials. We exploit the existence of time-resolved X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) data for the [Fe(bmip)2]2+ and [Fe(terpy)2]2+ prototypes for dynamics between metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and metal-centered (MC) states, which serve as a reference to benchmark the calculations (bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)-pyridine, terpy = 2,2’:6’,2''-terpyridine). The results show that the simulated ultrafast population dynamics between MLCT and MC states with various spin multiplicilities (singlet, triplet, quintet) highly depend on the utilized DFT/TD-DFT method with the percentage of exact (Hartree-Fock) exchange being the governing factor. Importantly, B3LYP* is the only DFT/TD-DFT method reproducing all important aspects of the experimentally resolved dynamics for both complexes, signalling an optimal balance in the description of MLCT-MC energetics. This work demonstrates the power of combining TSH/LVC dynamics simulations with time-resolved experimental reference data to benchmark full-dimensional potential energy surfaces.

Abstract:The photoinduced switching of Fe(II)-based spin-crossover complexes from singlet to quintet takes place at ultrafast time scales. This a priori spin-forbidden transition triggered numerous time-resolved experiments of solvated samples to elucidate the mechanism at play. The involved intermediate states remain uncertain. We apply ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy in molecular films as a method sensitive to spin, electronic, and nuclear degrees of freedom. Combining the progress in molecule synthesis and film growth with the opportunities at x-ray free-electron lasers, we analyze the transient evolution of the Fe L3 fine structure at room temperature. Our measurements and calculations indicate the involvement of an Fe triplet intermediate state. The high-spin state saturates at half of the available molecules, limited by molecule-molecule interaction within the film.

Abstract:The complex [Fe(H2O)6]SiF6 is one of the most stable and best characterized high-spin Fe(II) salts and as such, is a paradigm for the study of this important transition metal ion. We describe high-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance studies of both pure [Fe(H2O)6]SiF6 and [Zn(H2O)6]SiF6 doped with 8% of Fe(II). In addition, frequency domain magnetic resonance spectroscopy was applied to these samples. High signal-to-noise, high resolution spectra were recorded which allowed an accurate determination of spin Hamiltonian parameters for Fe(II) in each of these two, related, environments. For pure [Fe(H2O)6]SiF6, the following parameters were obtained: D=+11.95(1) cm(-1), E=0.658(4) cm(-1), g=[2.099(4),2.151(5),1.997(3)], along with fourth-order zero-field splitting parameters: B4(0)=17(1)×10(-4) cm(-1) and B4(4)=18(4)×10(-4) cm(-1), which are rarely obtainable by any technique. For the doped complex, D=+13.42(1) cm(-1), E=0.05(1) cm(-1), g=[2.25(1),2.22(1),2.23(1)]. These parameters are in good agreement with those obtained using other techniques. Ligand-field theory was used to analyze the electronic absorption data for [Fe(H2O)6]SiF6 and suggests that the ground state is 5A1, which allows successful use of a spin Hamiltonian model. Density functional theory and unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations were performed which, in the case of latter, reproduced the spin Hamiltonian parameters very well for the doped complex.

Abstract:We have studied the possibly half metallic Co2FeSi full Heusler alloy by means of spin- and time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. For excitation, the second and fourth harmonic of femtosecond Ti:sapphire lasers were used, with photon energies of 3.1 eV and 5.9 eV, respectively. We compare the dependence of the measured surface spin polarization on the particular photoemission mechanism, i.e. 1-photon-photoemission (1PPE) or 2-photon photoemission (2PPE). The observed differences in the spin polarization can be explained by a spin-dependent lifetime effect occurring in the 2-photon absorption process. The difference in escape depth of the two methods in this context suggests that the observed reduction of spin polarization (compared to the bulk) cannot be attributed just to the outermost surface layer but takes place at least 4-6 nm away from the surface.

Abstract:In the rich phases of van der Waals (vdW) materials featuring intertwined electronic order and collective phenomena, characterizing elementary dynamics that entail the low-energy Hamiltonian and electronic degrees of freedom is of paramount importance. Here we performed resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to elaborate the spin-orbital ground and excited states of the vdW antiferromagnetic insulator FePS$_{3}$, as well as their relation to magnetism. We observed the spectral enhancement of spin-orbital multiplet transitions about $\sim$ 100 and $\sim$ 220 meV, as well as quasielastic response, when entering the zig-zag antiferromagnetic phase, where the spectral changes develop an order-parameter-like evolution with temperature. By comparing with ligand field theory calculations, we discovered the essential role of trigonal lattice distortion and negative metal-ligand charge-transfer to account for these emergent excitations. Such spectral profiles are further examined upon confinement by mechanical exfoliation. We reveal their spectral robustness down to the few atomic layer limit, in accordance with the persistent antiferromagnetic state previously reported in optical measurements. Our study demonstrates the versatile RIXS capability that resolves magneto-crystalline anisotropy and charge-transfer energetics. These provide the crucial insight to understand how the spontaneous magnetic symmetry-breaking stabilizes in the quasi-two-dimensional limit for the vdW magnet FePS$_{3}$.

Abstract:We have used polarization-resolved UV pump-mid-IR probe spectroscopy to investigate the dynamics of electron hole localization for excited-state ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) excitation in Fe(CN)(6)(3-). The initially generated LMCT excited state has a single CN-stretch absorption band with no anisotropy. This provides strong evidence that this initial excited state preserves the octahedral symmetry of the electronic ground state by delocalizing the ligand hole in the LMCT excited state on all six cyanide ligands. This delocalized LMCT excited state decays to a second excited state with two CN-stretch absorption bands. We attribute both peaks to a single excited state because the formation time for both peaks matches the decay time for the delocalized LMCT excited state. The presence of two CN-stretch absorption bands demonstrates that this secondary excited state has lower symmetry. This observation, in conjunction with the solvent-dependent time constant for the formation of the secondary excited state, leads us to conclude that the secondary excited state corresponds to a LMCT state with a localized ligand hole.
Different photo-dissociation mechanisms in Fe(CO)5 and Cr(CO)6 evidenced with femtosecond valence photoelectron spectroscopy and excited-state molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract:Measured and calculated time-resolved photoelectron spectra and excited-state molecular dynamics simulations of photoexcited gas phase Fe(CO)5 and Cr(CO)6 are presented. Samples were excited with 266 nm pump pulses and probed with 23 eV photons from a femtosecond high- order harmonic generation source. Photoelectron intensities are seen to blue-shift as a function of time from binding energies characteristic of bound electronic excited states via dissociated-state energies towards the energies of the dissociated species for both Fe(CO)5 and Cr(CO)6 but differences are apparent. The excited-state and dissociation dynamics are found to be faster in Cr(CO)6 because repopulation from bound excited to dissociative excited states is faster. This may be due to a stronger coupling between bound and dissociative states in Cr(CO)6, a notion supported by the observation that the manifolds of bound and dissociative states overlap in a narrow energy range in this system.

High-Spin State of a Ferrocene Electron Donor Revealed by Optical and X-ray Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:Ferrocene is one of the most common electron donors, and mapping its ligand-field excited states is critical to designing donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules with long-lived charge transfer states. Although 3(d-d) states are commonly invoked in the photophysics of ferrocene complexes, mention of the high-spin 5(d-d) state is scarce. Here, we provide clear evidence of 5(d-d) formation in a bimetallic D-A molecule, ferrocenyl cobaltocenium hexafluorophosphate ([FcCc]PF6). Femtosecond optical transient absorption (OTA) spectroscopy reveals two distinct electronic excited states with 30 ps and 500 ps lifetimes. Using a combination of ultraviolet, visible, nearinfrared, and short-wave infrared probe pulses, we capture the spectral features of these states over an ultrabroadband range spanning 320 nm to 2200 nm. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations of the lowest triplet and quintet states, both primarily Fe(II) (d-d) in character, qualitatively agree with the experimental OTA spectra, allowing us to assign the 30 ps state as the 3(d-d) state and the 500 ps state as the high-spin 5(d-d) state. To confirm the ferrocene-centered high-spin character of the 500 ps state, we performed X-ray transient absorption (XTA) spectroscopy at the Fe and Co K edges. The Fe K-edge XTA spectrum at 150 ps shows signatures of bond-length expansion and a Jahn-Teller distortion, consistent with an Fe(II) high-spin state. No transient signal is detected at the Co K-edge, confirming the ferrocene-centered character of the excited state. Altogether, these results demonstrate that the high-spin state of ferrocene should be considered when designing donor-acceptor assemblies for photocatalysis and photovoltaics.

Abstract:We report structural, susceptibility and specific heat studies of stoichiometric and off-stoichiometric poly- and single crystals of the A-site spinel compound FeSc2S4. In stoichiometric samples no long-range magnetic order is found down to 1.8 K. The magnetic susceptibility of these samples is field independent in the temperature range 10 - 400 K and does not show irreversible effects at low temperatures. In contrast, the magnetic susceptibility of samples with iron excess shows substantial field dependence at high temperatures and manifests a pronounced magnetic irreversibility at low temperatures with a difference between ZFC and FC susceptibilities and a maximum at 10 K reminiscent of a magnetic transition. Single crystal x-ray diffraction of the stoichiometric samples revealed a single phase spinel structure without site inversion. In single crystalline samples with Fe excess besides the main spinel phase a second ordered single-crystal phase was detected with the diffraction pattern of a vacancy-ordered superstructure of iron sulfide, close to the 5C polytype Fe9S10. Specific heat studies reveal a broad anomaly, which evolves below 20 K in both stoichiometric and off-stoichiometric crystals. We show that the low-temperature specific heat can be well described by considering the low-lying spin-orbital electronic levels of Fe2+ ions. Our results demonstrate significant influence of excess Fe ions on intrinsic magnetic behavior of FeSc2S4 and provide support for the spin-orbital liquid scenario proposed in earlier studies for the stoichiometric compound.

Ligand-controlled alteration of nuclear trajectories during photoinduced intersystem crossing in bis-meridional Fe(II) complexes

Abstract:The intersystem crossing dynamics of two bis-meridional iron(II) complexes are studied by femtosecond transient M-edge X-ray near edge absorption spectroscopy (XANES) with a tabletop high-harmonic extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectrometer. Visible-light photoexcitation of Fe(tpy)2(BF4)2 (where tpy = terpyridine) creates a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MCLT) state that decays in 170 fs to a metal-centered triplet state (3MC), followed by 38 fs decay by intersystem crossing to a metal-centered quintet (5MC). Coherent oscillations on the 5MC surface are observed as a modulation in the XANES spectrum with a frequency of 103 cm-1 and a spectral shape that is characteristic of the symmetric Fe-N stretch. These dynamics and spectra are similar to those previously observed for Fe(phen)32+ (phen = phenanthroline). In contrast, transient spectroscopy of Fe[(4-CF3)2bpca]2 (bpca= bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amide) reveals a lower-frequency 42 cm-1 coherent oscillation. Ligand field multiplet calculations combined with ab initio ligand field theory identify this oscillation as a ligand bending mode, highlighting the ligand field sensitivity of M-edge XANES. The activation of different vibrational modes in Fe(tpy)2(BF4)2 and Fe[(4-CF3)2bpca]2 is explained by mapping their excited-state potential energy surfaces using density functional theory. In the latter complex, the nuclear trajectory follows initial expansion along the Fe-Naxial coordinate until reaching the 3MC/5MC seam. After intersystem crossing, the quintet state is significantly displaced along the coordinate corresponding to the ligand rocking mode, which therefore dominates the subsequent trajectory.

Abstract:Raman scattering in the spin-crossover system [Fe(pmd)(H2O){Au(CN)2}2]*H2O reveals a complex three-phase spin-state transition in contrast to earlier observations in magnetization measurements. We observe different spin state phases as function of temperature and electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectral range. There exists a fluctuating spin state phase with an unexpected wipeout of the low frequency phonon scattering intensity. Furthermore we observe one phase with reduced symmetry that is attributed to a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect. Pronounced electron-phonon interaction manifests itself as a strong Fano-resonance of phonons related to {FeN6} and {FeN4O2} coordination octahedra. Density functional theory supports this interpretation.

Abstract:The hydrated shell of both Fe2+ and Fe3+ aqueous solutions are investigated by using the molecular dynamics (MD) and X-ray absorption structure (XAS) methods. The MD simulations show that the first hydrated shells of both Fe2+ and Fe3+ are characterized by a regular octahedron with an Fe-O distance of 2.08 angstrom for Fe2+ and 1.96 angstrom for Fe3+, and rule out the occurrence of a Jahn-Teller distortion in the hydrated shell of an Fe2+ aqueous solution. The corresponding X-ray absorption near edge fine structure (XANES) calculation successfully reproduces all features in the XANES spectra in Fe2+ and Fe3+ aqueous solution. A feature that is located at energy 1 eV higher than the white line (WL) in an Fe3+ aqueous solution may be assigned to the contribution of the charge transfer.
