Abstract:In November 2022, a Twitter account reported fraud committed by an owner of a well-known vanity publisher. The post that was retweeted thousand times revealed that many authors experience the same thing. Based on that case, this study analyzed reasons that drive authors to self-publish or use vanity and indie publishing service. To answer the research question, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with five authors acting as informants. The researcher presents the interview's results in three categories: the romanticism of publishing printed books, idealism in writing, and the prestige of indie publishing. The researcher analyzes the data using Michael Foucault's thoughts in his essay What is an author? This study found that though the informants used alternative publishing because conventional publishers did not accept their works, they had different reasons to continue using alternative publishing. The informants agreed that alternative publishing offers flexibility that enables them to maintain their idealism. However, the informants had different opinions on the classic conflict between idealism and income. The informants do not consider indie publishing more prestigious than conventional publishers or vice versa. However, they have their considerations when choosing a type of publisher. The interviews also showed that a supporting community, a valuable network, and pieces of information are necessary before using alternative publishing.

Abstract:Finding a suitable home for a scientific manuscript can be a demanding task. Recent times have seen a significant surge in the number of journals available for receiving submissions within each specialty and subspecialty of medicine. This increases the number of options for authors and provides them with several more avenues to publish their work. However, it parallelly increases the level of uncertainty. Choosing the right journal is challenging, and several factors influence this decision. Citation 1–4 The present editorial lists five major factors that prospective authors should consider while choosing a journal to publish their work. The sequence is not sacrosanct and reflects the editors' preference based on their experience.

Abstract:Many academic practices are questionable yet gaining increased practice. As a call of their responsibility, people concerned about such anomalies have expressed their agony on the issues in forums that have looked into some with a positive intent while ignoring others. Unfortunately, the ignored ones are growing daily, making ethically and intellectually sound minds cringe. This situation is largely due to a lack of corrective action in most cases due to lack of resources and few cases due to a lack of intent. This is a genuine review on the matter so far without highlighting any great institution (to undermine their reputation) or undermining the ignoramus ones (considering their lack of resources) worldwide. Instead, this article aims to highlight some of these anomalies for the attention of concerned intellectuals so that they can react quickly before it is too late for any remedial action.

Abstract:Peer review is a cornerstone of scientific publication, and consequently, predatory journals are feared to be a threat to the credibility of science as they perform no or low‐quality peer review. The question of why researchers decide to publish in a questionable journal remains relatively unexplored. This paper provides an overview of the existing literature on why researchers decide to publish papers in questionable journals, specifically whether or not they search for a low‐barrier way to getting published while being aware that the chosen journal probably does not adhere to acceptable academic standards. The choice of a publication outlet can be seen as a submission tree that consists of various incentives, and explaining why authors publish in deceptive journals may thus consist of a combination of awareness and motivational factors. Awareness and motivation of diligent authors is very different from that of unethical authors. Unethical authors may use a lack of awareness to excuse their actions, but they may actively search for a low‐barrier way to getting published. As there are different types of authors who publish in deceptive journals, we need different approaches to solve the problem.

Abstract:Scholarly writing and publishing are activities marked by intellectual honesty, integrity, and excellence. Together, they are an indispensable requirement for academics to maintain and sustain their careers in various academic institutions. However, in higher education institutions, the infamous aphorism 'publish or perish' has resulted in unethical academic practices. These practices derail the quality expected of scholarly writing and publishing. This paper is a collection of advice to novice writers on the ten most common reasons why scholarly papers are rejected, offering sound solutions to these problems. Though an unpleasant experience, scholarly paper rejection keeps authors on guard against unethical academic writing practices. It helps them to transform their scholarly papers to meet the high standards of academia. The paper contends that scholarly paper rejection is an important activity in scholarly writing and publishing because it ensures quality in academic knowledge production and dissemination.
The Changing Landscape of Scholarly Publishing (in Finance) – An Author’s view

Abstract:This note originated as part of the author’s regular research publishing activity. The author’s and colleagues’ experiences suggested broadening the usual examination of potential outlets. What we encountered was not “more of the same” from previous searches for outlets but very significant fundamental changes in the academic/scholarly publishing landscape. We first review the standard research process in the context of academic tenure and promotions. The we proceed to identify and enumerate potential publishing outlets, which we further classify into groups reflecting these critical differences meaningful for academic authors and their supervisors: nature of the outlet (for profit, not for profit; commercial, academic, and professional), open versus restricted access, peer-reviewing, and nature of the final article depository. What we consider the usual way to go about publishing shows many disruptions that do not benefit authors, such as major (commercial) publishers favoring a certain type of article and engaging in massive desk-rejection practices as well as less powerful publishers either closing down or imposing restrictions (words, reviewers), with serious unintended consequences. The traditional scholarly publishing model of requiring a given number of articles every x years may have become unsustainable, as it is extremely expensive and does not favor disinterested research. On the plus side, we find increasing publishing opportunities for authors, but these alternative opportunities might imply decisions that do not fit the traditional evaluation approach and might require innovative agreements between faculty and their academic supervisors.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Generally, academic promotions, job retention, job mobility, and professional development of a medical faculty members are judged primarily by the growth in publication outputs. Universities and research institutions are more likely to recruit and promote those academics carrying voluminous résumés with larger number of published articles. This review elaborates the causes and consequences of the pressure to publish and the ways and means to cope with this paradigm.METHODS: In 2015, database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, LISTA (EBSCO), Medline and Oxford University Library were searched for the English language full-text articles published during 2000-2015, by using MeSH terms "pressure to publish", "urge to publish", "research ethics", "plagiarism", "article retraction", "medical field". This search was further refined by selecting the articles in terms of relevancy and contents.RESULTS: This research showed that some universities offer generous grants to researchers with a high h-index and with more publications in elite journals, which promise an enhanced prospect of citations and elevation in the scientific rankings of the funding institutions. This generates an involuntary obsession to publish with the primary intention to obtain promotions, high scientific rankings, and improved job security. This compelling pressure to publish results in widespread publication of non-significant research with a high index of plagiarism that eventually leads to an increased frequency of retractions.CONCLUSION: Research centers and academic institutions have an obligation to train their academics in sound scientific writing and to apprise them of the publication ethics and the grave consequences of plagiarism and research misconduct.

Abstract:AbstractOur purpose for this article is to provide suggestions on how to get your high quality research published from the perspectives of reviewers. First, good writing is good thinking, and you are much more likely to succeed when you combine good writing with sound research. We then offer an eight-step method of reviewing that may help the author better understand how to present and understand the research. Next, we describe ways to identify high quality journals, including acceptance rates, impact factor, Eigenfactors, and Article Influence scores. In the following section, we address common criteria used to rate articles, possible decisions, and how to revise the manuscript in response to reviewers’ comments. We present an example table of responses to reviewers’ critiques. We conclude with further advice for more novice researchers. Become a reviewer to help you better understand the process and peers’ expectations. Highlight the caliber of your research by citing journal metrics when being considered for promotion or hiring. Finally, frame negative reviews as an opportunity to improve your work and keep trying to publish your research despite criticisms.

Abstract:This study aims to determine the cognitive, social, physical, and affective barriers that prevent academics from publishing and the enablers suggested to overcome these barriers. The study, using the phenomenological research method, involved semi-structured interviews conducted with 41 academicians differing in gender, branch, age, and experience. The deductive analysis of the obtained data showed that the academicians had cognitive difficulties especially in writing the IMRAD sections and writing in English. Their social barriers were found to include the difficulty of journal evaluation processes, the problems experienced in carrying out collaborative studies, and educational, administrative, and family responsibilities. The physical barriers included problems about time management, data collection process, and infrastructure. Lastly, the main affective barriers were not being in the right mood for writing, thinking that studies do not contribute to real life, fear of rejection, lack of self-confidence, and perfectionism. The academicians suggested various enablers, such as finding a good research topic, improving one's English language skills, cooperating, and insisting on acceptance.

Abstract:"Publish or Perish" read the sign over one of my mentor's desk. I thought it sounded rather ominous and in my early carreer, I saw many of my papers perish for various reasons. Over the years, I learned the hard way that publishing a scientific article in a respected journal is a long and winding road that no course prepares us for. Publishing one's research results are the culmination of a labor intensive process that may have taken years but like an elaborate recipe, there are fundamental steps that must be meticulously executed and elegantly presented. As Editor-in-Chief over the past five years at Women & Health, it never ceased to amaze me how easily authors let their research perish just because they did not read the instructions for authors or wrote an abstract that did not reflect their work or worse, submit papers with so many linguistic errors that at times it is impossible to understand. Publishing houses such as Taylor & Francis devote a great deal of time and resources to develop instructions for authors as well as various resources to help anyone throughout the publication journey. For some unknown reason many authors seem to ignore such valuable resources.

Abstract:How to write and publish quality papers and that too in a quality journal, is a puzzle that every scholar and researcher, particularly in their early careers, struggles to solve as early as possible. Here, I want to outline, in brief, how one can work toward writing and publishing a good paper. The writing style and structure of a paper depends on the type of manuscript, which can be broadly be categorised as empirical, and non-empirical. Empirical papers, which use empirical data to answer the research questions and/or testing hypotheses, are the most used form of published work in scientific journals. The types of non-empirical papers include conceptual, theoretical, review-based, case study, perspective, notes, commentary etc.

Abstract:Recent research\cite{fort} has shown that in the 20th century there is an exponential growth of the number of published scientific papers, but new ideas has only a linear growth with time. The 19th and the first half of the 20th century saw major scientific discoveries. But from the second half of the 20th century, the number of publications far exceeds the number of impactful discoveries. Does an exponentially growing number of publications indicate an element of pathological research? Pressure to publish a large number of papers has led to the phenomena of overproduction, unnecessary fragmentations, overselling, predatory journals (pay and publish), clever plagiarism, and deliberate obfuscation of scientific results so as to sell and oversell. This is harming the healthy scientific culture of passion driven research. It is an urgent problem which needs attention of the whole of the scientific community. Some ways to mitigate these grave problems are discussed.

Abstract:In the current performative climate of higher education, where academic outputs are highly valorised, professional academic writing has become 'high stakes' and is often framed as fraught with tension and anxiety. In this article, we contest the phrase 'publish or perish' and argue that is not necessarily helpful or, indeed, always true. Through interviews involving critical incidents with a team of academics, the authors found that tensions in experiences of scholarly writing do indeed exist. However, participants also reported on the affordances of the process of professional academic writing in terms of developing ideas, collaborations, and creating spaces for creativity and desire. We emphasise the juxtaposition of the value of creation with the value of the finished product and argue that writing for publication needs to be highlighted as a process permeated with learning opportunities for both early career researchers and more experienced academics.

Abstract:In the current academia landscape, academics, particularly those from non-native English speaking (NNES) countries, face formidable challenges in gaining publication in reputable international journals. The dominance of English as the language of scientific dissemination, coupled with limited resources and research infrastructure, hinders NNES academics from meeting the standards of high-impact journals. This issue is particularly pronounced in Indonesia, where most scholars face the additional challenge of conducting research in Bahasa Indonesia and writing manuscripts in English. The purposes of this study were to elicit the obstacles encountered by Indonesian scholars in gaining international publication, and the extent to which the advancement of AI-based writing technologies can provide solution. The study is expected to provide valuable insights into their experiences and contributing to a better understanding of the publishing landscape in Indonesia. The study utilized the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) to capture the opinions of four Indonesian academics pursuing their doctoral degrees overseas. The findings highlight the need for user-friendly, comprehensive technology solutions, including Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based software and applications, to assist academics in English academic writing in the Indonesian context. Despite the limitations of current digital writing assistants, they are recommended as useful aids in overcoming language barriers. Access to human consultants was unanimously considered crucial. Initiatives such as advocating for multilingualism and providing language editing services, as well as the availability of online resources and support, are important steps towards addressing disparities in academic publishing. The findings of this research have the potential to inform policies and initiatives aimed at supporting and promoting Indonesian academics in their pursuit of reputable international publications.

Abstract:Achieving a place in the authorship of published scientific research is a matter of pride and fame associated with creativity, recognition, better evaluation, and financial gains. This had made assigning of authorship in a scientific publication, a complex and challenging issue. Gaining a position in authorship in scientific publications not only prompts or encourages authors to carry out more research but also recourse many of them to the unethical practice of different kinds of authorship abuses. These authorship abuses are done so cleverly and skillfully that neither the journal editors nor the readers of the journals realize that bias had crept in authorship of the publication. This nonstandard act of biased authorship has a tremendous potential to compromise the credibility of scientific research and scientific publications. The present review aims in focusing on issues pertaining to authorship and its misuse in biomedical research. Thus, it can be concluded from this review that new policies, guidelines, and laws should be made by the government agencies in association with journal editors, institution, and government agencies to curb this malpractice by protecting whistleblowers and providing adequate punishment for those who are involved.
