Pathways to publishing a scientific article: listen to the editor

Abstract:"Publish or Perish" read the sign over one of my mentor's desk. I thought it sounded rather ominous and in my early carreer, I saw many of my papers perish for various reasons. Over the years, I learned the hard way that publishing a scientific article in a respected journal is a long and winding road that no course prepares us for. Publishing one's research results are the culmination of a labor intensive process that may have taken years but like an elaborate recipe, there are fundamental steps that must be meticulously executed and elegantly presented. As Editor-in-Chief over the past five years at Women & Health, it never ceased to amaze me how easily authors let their research perish just because they did not read the instructions for authors or wrote an abstract that did not reflect their work or worse, submit papers with so many linguistic errors that at times it is impossible to understand. Publishing houses such as Taylor & Francis devote a great deal of time and resources to develop instructions for authors as well as various resources to help anyone throughout the publication journey. For some unknown reason many authors seem to ignore such valuable resources.
