Abstract:With increase in availability of global Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) that are derived from distinctive techniques with varying characteristics, it is essentially required to assess their accuracies prior to use them in the flood inundation modelling, especially in urban catchments. In the present study, firstly, the vertical accuracy of the global DEMs is assessed using datasets of three independent Ground Control Point (GCP) measurements while accounting for the spatial and temporal variabilities with respect to DEM data acquisitions. Next, we investigate their suitability for flood inundation modelling by developing hydrodynamic models. The accuracy of global DEMs, viz. SRTM, MERIT, AW3D30, COPDEM30, TanDEM-X 12, TanDEM-X 90, FABDEM, and CartoDEM are assessed for Lower Tapi Basin (LTB), India using ICESat-1 and ICESat-2 laser altimetry, and GNSS surveyed locations. The potential of TanDEM-X 12 DEM for deriving Digital Terrain Model (DTM) from the Digital Surface Model (DSM) has been explored by adopting Simple Morphological Filter (SMRF) and void-filling approaches. Finally, a comprehensive performance evaluation of these DEMs that includes DSMs and DTMs in flood inundation modelling is carried out by simulating the severe fluvial flood event of magnitude 25,768 m 3 /sec that occurred in the year 2006 in LTB through 1D-2D coupled Hydro-Dynamic (HD) models using HEC-RAS software. Prior to development of HD models using global DEMs and DTMs as terrain layer, a benchmark model has been simulated for the same event with terrain layer as topographic surveyed contours of the basin. The least flood depth error has been observed for the FABDEM model (RMSE: 1.59 m), followed by the model with terrain topography as the derived "TanDEM-X 12 DTM-AMP-HEM-EVF" (RMSE: 1.88 m). On the other hand, the HD model based on TanDEM-X 12 DTM AMP-HEM-EVF has been able to simulate flood inundation extent better than the FABDEM model for the same flood event in the basin with Critical Success Index (CSI) scores 0.91 and 0.81 respectively. The TanDEM-X 12 DTM-AMP-HEM-EVF terrain-based model indicated consistently superior results in capturing flood inundation extent, leaving behind all the DSMs whose CSI scores are found to be less than 50 %. The global DEMs that are inherently DSMs in nature are unsuitable for flood inundation modelling as they fail to capture the flood pathways in urban topographies with precision. From the systematic framework followed in the present study, it is inferred that the processed TanDEM-X 12 DEM for the removal of artifacts could be a successful replacement to obtain bare-earth topography. In the absence of TanDEM-X 12 DEM, the freely available FABDEM can be used as an alternative source for terrain layer in flood modelling as its results are comparable to the derived terrain topography of TanDEM-X 12 DEM. The study is one of the first to assess the performance of FABDEM in flood modelling of coastal urban floodplain.

Abstract:Cross-sectional shape data are prime input to numerical river hydrodynamic models,playing an essential role in simulation of discharge and water level.However,many rivers lack measurement of cross sections and their field survey is painstaking and time-consuming.This paper describes an approach to synthesizing river cross-sections based on the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data which can be obtained by free download from the intemet.Imprecise DEM data and deficiency of underwater data are two problems.In the approach,the DEM data are extracted and then revised with measured data to construct a shape for the upper part of each cross section,while the shape of lower part or underwater channel bed is calculated by interpolation with the Kochanek-Bartels splines.To verify this new approach that is used for the first time,both the extracted cross sections and the measured ones were used in simulation of flooding in the lower reach of the Pudu river with a one-dimensional hydraulic model THU-RiverlH.Good agreement between the two results suggests that the extracted cross sections can be used for the case of lacking topographic data in hydrodynamic modeling.
A Hydrodynamics and Remote Sensing based Framework for Establishing Virtual Streamflow Measurement Stations in Scantily-gauged River Reaches

Abstract:Streamflow is the fundamental variable for any hydro-informatics based decision making to manage catchment-scale water resources. However, with the significant reduction in the number of streamflow gauging stations in many world-rivers, emphasis has now been shifted toward obtaining river discharges along the ungauged / scantily-gauged river reaches using innovative hydroinformatics tools. Many rivers which were gauged in the past, are now ungauged. In this context, this study considers a typical real-river, namely, the 48 km Bolani-Gomlai reach of the Brahmani River in eastern India, where a few historical concurrent streamflow hydrographs are available at the upstream and downstream gauging stations, which are defunct at present. Therefore, the main focus of this study is to generate spatially distributed high-frequent daily-scale river discharges along the selected ungauged river reach using the real-time optical remote sensing (RS) based imageries. To achieve this objective, the MIKE11 hydrodynamic (HD) model is setup and used in the selected reach to route the past streamflow records, available at the upstream section, so as to obtain the corresponding spatially distributed past discharges at 1 km resolution downstream. These routed historical streamflow records at each 1 km interval form the observed flow database for that specific RS-based virtual streamflow measurement station (VMS). For establishing the VMSs at each 1 km interval to estimate daily-scale river discharges, an RS-based methodology has been advocated that uses the spectral reflectances of the fused MODIS and Landsat satellite imageries and the MIKE11-HD derived corresponding routed past streamflows for calibration and validation. The different spectral behavior of land (C) and water (W) pixels in the near infrared of the electromagnetic spectrum is exploited by computing the (C/W) ratio of the fused imageries between two pixels located within (W) and outside (C), but close to the river. The values of C/W increase with the presence of water and, hence, with discharge. Moreover, in order to reduce the noise effect, an exponential smoothening filter is applied to obtain C/W*. Finally, the real-time filtered pixel ratios are used in the RS-based framework to estimate recent high-frequent streamflows in the ungauged river reach. The results reveal that the developed model has a very good potential which can be extended for high-frequent discharge estimation at any ungauged world-river reaches.
Coupling of SWAT and DSAS Models for Assessment of Retrospective and Prospective Transformations of River Deltaic Estuaries

Abstract:River deltaic estuaries are dynamic ecosystems characterised by linkages between tidal currents, river water discharge, and sediment from the basin. The present study is based on the application of remote data: multispectral satellite images, DEM, LULC (Land use and land cover), lithology, and hydroclimatic factors. The standardised methodology was based on the adoption of a coupled modelling approach for this work, involving the semi-distributed catchment scale hydrological Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model and the statistical Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) for (1) identifying environmental drivers of sediment transport changes of the estuarine reach; (2) analysis of retrospective changes in shoreline configuration; (3) assessing discharge and sediment dynamics of the estuarine section, and (4) generating future projection scenarios for the estuary's state to take action for its long-term ecological stability. Our study employs a coupled modelling framework to fill the research gap for Subarnarekha deltaic estuary. Integrating outputs derived from DSAS and SWAT, a comprehensive understanding of the changes in watershed hydrology, water diversions, and damming of rivers have altered the magnitude and temporal patterns of freshwater flow and sediment, which potentially contributed to the receding of the Digha Coast shoreline.

Hydraulic Correction Method (HCM) to Enhance the Efficiency of SRTM DEM in Flood Modeling

Abstract:Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is one of the most important controlling factors determining the simulation accuracy of hydraulic models. However, the currently available global topographic data is confronted with limitations for application in 2-D hydraulic modeling, mainly due to the existence of vegetation bias, random errors and insufficient spatial resolution. A hydraulic correction method (HCM) for the SRTM DEM is proposed in this study to improve modeling accuracy. Firstly, we employ the global vegetation corrected DEM (i.e. Bare-Earth DEM), developed from the SRTM DEM to include both vegetation height and SRTM vegetation signal. Then, a newly released DEM, removing both vegetation bias and random errors (i.e. Multi-Error Removed DEM), is employed to overcome the limitation of height errors. Last, an approach to correct the Multi-Error Removed DEM is presented to account for the insufficiency of spatial resolution, ensuring flow connectivity of the river networks. The approach involves: (a) extracting river networks from the Multi-Error Removed DEM using an automated algorithm in ArcGIS; (b) correcting the location and layout of extracted streams with the aid of Google Earth platform and Remote Sensing imagery; and (c) removing the positive biases of the raised segment in the river networks based on bed slope to generate the hydraulically corrected DEM. The proposed HCM utilizes easily available data and tools to improve the flow connectivity of river networks without manual adjustment. To demonstrate the advantages of HCM, an extreme flood event in Huifa River Basin (China) is simulated on the original DEM, Bare-Earth DEM, Multi-Error removed DEM, and hydraulically corrected DEM using an integrated hydrologic-hydraulic model. A comparative analysis is subsequently performed to assess the simulation accuracy and performance of four different DEMs and favorable results have been obtained on the corrected DEM. A river channel terrain reconstruction method for flood simulations based on coarse DEMs

Abstract:To mitigate the unavailability of accurate river channel terrain data for flood modeling, this work develops a new approach to construct channel terrain based on available global coarse digital elevation models (DEMs). Compared to other established methods, the approach constructs the river surface using the sparse cross-section data from available coarse DEMs and not measurements. For a 134 km river reach of the Yangtze River, the absolute percentage error of simulated peak discharge with the coarse DEMs is 76.77%, and the delay time of peak discharge is 13 h; however, with the reconstructed terrain data are 12.13% and 0 h. They are 9.70% and -1 h on a 382 km river reach. The simulation results show that the approach can be used to reliably predict the flood propagation process without fine terrain data. The proposed approach can be used to improve flood management in areas without fine river terrain data.

Abstract:The spatial variability of both meteorological and geographic features has a great influence on rainfall runoff process. When making flood forecasting, the influence of this variability on runoff should be considered. In this paper, the distributed hydrological modeling technique was adopted to simulate flood discharge with consideration of spatial variability using DEMs and remotely sensed data. In our approach, the grid based digital elevation data was used for the presentation of watershed discretization and deriving flow path system and parameters. The infiltration and rainfall excess on each hillslope grid cell were calculated using the Green-Ampt infiltration equation. Soil lateral flow was estimated based on Darcy's law and continuity equation, overland and channel flows were calculated by using one-dimensional kinematic wave equations on hillslope and channel grid cells respectively. The land use and land cover data derived from remotely sensed images was used for the determination of Manning's roughness coefficients. The soil type data was used for deriving soil hydraulic parameters needed for calculation.The approach was applied in Jiaokou Watershed with area of 259km(2), a sub-basin of Yongjiang River in Zhejiang Province, China. The data collected for this study included land cover processed from Landsat TM images, soil type distribution from the soil maps, 100-m spatial resolution DEMs produced from digital topographic maps. Spatial distribution of rainfall for each flood event was calculated by using distance inverse interpolation methods. Nine flood events were simulated, two of which were used for calibration, and the others for validation. The simulated hydrographs at basin outlet showed good agreement with observed ones for both calibrated and validated flood events, and average coefficients of efficiency were 94% for calibrated flood events and 92% for validated flood events.
High-efficient Extraction of Drainage Networks from Digital Elevation Models Constrained by Enhanced Flow Enforcement from Known River Maps

Abstract:Drainage network extraction plays an important role in geomorphologic analyses, hydrologic modeling, and non-point source pollutant simulation, among others. Flow enforcement, by imposing information of known river maps to digital elevation models (DEMs), leads to improved drainage network extraction. However, the existing flow enforcement methods (e.g., the elevation-based stream-burning method) have certain limitations, as they may cause unreal longitudinal profiles, lead to unintended topological errors, and even misinterpret the overall drainage patterns. The present study proposes an enhanced flow enforcement method without elevation modification towards an accurate and efficient drainage network extraction. In addition to preserving the Boolean-value information as to whether a DEM pixel belongs to a stream, the proposed method can also well preserve and fully utilize the topological relations among mapped streamlines and morphological information of each mapped streamline. The method involves two important steps: (1) proposal of an improved rasterization algorithm of mapped streamlines to yield continuous, unambiguous, and collision-free raster equivalent of stream vectors for flow enforcement; and (2) realization of the enhanced flow enforcement in a modified Priority-Flood procedure –– in this way, flows are enforced to completely follow the mapped streamlines, and hence, channel short-circuits and spurious confluences of adjacent streams are avoided. An efficient implementation of the method is made based on a size-balanced binary search tree. The method is also tested over the Rogue River Basin in the United States, using DEMs with various resolutions. Visual and statistical analyses of the results indicate three major advantages of the proposed method: (1) significant reduction in the misinterpretation of drainage patterns; (2) maximum channel displacement of one pixel to the river map at various resolutions; and (3) high computational efficiency.
Quantification of global Digital Elevation Model (DEM) – A case study of the newly released NASADEM for a river basin in Central Vietnam

Abstract:Study region Lai Giang River basin, Central Vietnam Study focus The Digital Elevation Models (DEM) is essential in hydrological modeling and water cycle understanding. There are several unanswered questions regarding the impact of DEM on the models' quality of hydrological applications. This study develops a comprehensive framework for evaluating impacts of six global DEM products: MERIT, NASA, SRTM, ASTER GDEM2, AW3D30, and TanDEM-X using the semi-distributed model SWAT for the Lai Giang River basin, Central Vietnam, in which four criteria have been used (i) statistical analysis, (ii) river basin characteristics, (iii) effects of DEM uncertainty on streamflow using hydrological simulations, and (iv) cross-validation's impacts on hydrological applications. New hydrological insights for the regions (1) NASA and SRTM 30 DEM were ranked as most accurate DEMs among the chosen products; (2) ASTER GDEM2 performed the worst, with more uncertainty in river networks delineation; (3) MERIT, ASTER GDEM2, and SRTM 90 m provided inaccurate basin delineations, particularly for the intersection subbasin; (4) DEM resolution and source are insensitive to most of the hydrological components, except for lateral flow, groundwater flow, water percolation, and sediment yield. Moreover, a proposed cross-validation approach for the DEM performance has been introduced, showing that the calibrating parameters of higher-resolution DEM would positively impact the hydrological simulations of lower-resolution DEMs and the opposite, especially in terms of flood peak observation.

Abstract:Many dryland rivers are terminal systems, with small channels undergoing prominent downstream size reductions before ending on channelless floodplains, in wetlands, or at playa margins. Spaceborne Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) provide potential for assessing subtle topographic and hydrodynamic changes in these low-gradient, low-relief settings, but challenges are posed by limitations in vertical and horizontal accuracy. This study evaluates the use of different spaceborne DEMs for topographic characterisation and flood flow modelling of the low-gradient (<0.0006 m m−1) Río Colorado terminal system, Bolivia. A comparison between DEM and field dGPS elevation data (1290 measurement points) reveals that the TanDEM-X DEM 12 m (TDX-12 m) has a RMSE of 0.47 m, far less than those of other frequently used spaceborne DEMs such as ALOS RTC (4.58 m) and SRTM (6.02 m). For hydrodynamic modelling, TDX-12 m data were smoothed (adaptive filter and feature-preserving DEM smoothing) and upscaled. The smoothed TDX-12 m data were mosaiced with a dGPS data-derived river path, surveyed along a reach (mean width <30 m) with a prominent downstream size decrease. The methods enabled effective de-noising of the TDX-12 m data (RMSE 0.29 m) and resulted in a high linear regression correlation coefficient (0.75). HEC-RAS 2D modelling reveals that in the selected reach, overbank flooding starts in the downstream part when discharge is <18 m3/s, with flow initially spreading through crevasse channels and levee topographic lows. As discharge increases, flow spreads farther across the floodplain, ultimately forming connected floodplain flow in distal topographic lows. Satellite imagery and a derived water index indicate the same floodplain flow patterns as the modelling (critical success index 0.77). Wider use of DEMs based on TDX-12 m data for topographic characterization and flood flow modelling along relatively small, low-gradient terminal dryland rivers will result in many scientific and applied benefits.

Abstract:Flow accumulation method is the most common technique used in extracting river networks from digital elevation model (DEM) data. This method allows the extraction of networks with arbitrary density, that is, different threshold areas can be used to generate channel network with different density. Here, the effect of threshold area on width function and area function is examined. The scaling structures of width function and area function are studied using their singularity spectra. With the aid of singularity spectrum, it's easy to identify the differences in river networks resulting from different threshold areas. This paper discusses the stability of width function and area function and the limiting threshold areas for deriving catchment area function.

Abstract:Forecasting flood and drought events requires accurate modeling tools. Hydraulic river models are based on estimates of riverbed geometry which are traditionally collected in situ. The novel Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite 2 [ICESat‐2] lidar altimetry mission with 6 simultaneous high‐resolution laser beams provides the opportunity to define river cross‐section geometries as well as observe water surface elevation [WSE] and water surface slope spatially resolved along the river chainage. This paper describes a method to utilize terrain altimetry and water surface slope estimates to define complete river geometries from ICESat‐2 data products, using the diffusive wave approximation to calculate depth in the submerged section not penetrated by the lidar. Exemplifying the method, cross‐sections are defined for a stretch of the Mekong River. Hydrodynamic model results of the stretch are compared with ICESat‐2 WSE estimates and in situ gauging station time series. Insights in river characteristics from satellite imagery and the ICESat‐2 slope estimates allow for fine‐tuning of the cross‐sections using spatially varying Manning numbers. The final model achieves a root mean square error against the ICESat‐2 WSE of 0.676 m and average Kling‐Gupta Efficiency against gauging station time series of 0.880. The method is limited by the diffusive wave approximation resulting in inaccurate cross‐section estimates in sections with supercritical flow or significant acceleration. Errors can be identified from ICESat‐2 WSE estimates and reduced with additional cross‐sections. Combined with hydrological models, the method will allow for cross‐section definition without in situ data.

A Comparative Study on Different Schemes of Automatic River System Extraction Based on DEM and Vector Channels

Abstract:Distributed hydrologic stimulations usually integrate hydrologic models with Geographic Information System(GIS).The foundation of the simulations lies on how to obtain hydrologic and topographic parameters from Digital Elevation Model(DEM).Automatic extraction of river channel systems from DEM is a fundamental procedure for distributed hydrological simulations.Numerous algorithms for watershed automatic delineation based on DEM have been developed.However,Due to the errors involved in DEM,associated complex procedures in watershed delineation,and other natural and human factors determining realistic river channel systems,discrepancies usually occur between extracted river channel systems merely based on DEM and realistic channels.Additional information should be considered in traditional extraction processes in order to ensure highly reliable delineations.In this study,we explored performances of different automatic river network extraction schemes based on DEM and the information imposed in the processes.We introduced a real river channel vector map to automatic extraction based on DEM for difference schemes.Two different methods to impose the real channel vector map on DEM,namely modifying an elevation matrix or a flow direction matrix,were utilized in automatic extraction procedures.A large,complicated catchment with an area of over 10000 km2 gauged by the Linyi hydrologic station in Shandong province was selected to perform the comparisons.Results showed that imposing real channel digitized vectors on DEM greatly improved the precision of extracted river networks.In addition,we evaluated the effects of different imposition schemes on delineation results and discussed their advantages and shortcomings,respectively.These schemes included:directly decreasing the elevation of pits and combined with ESRI-ArcGIS's hydrologic toolbox,the "AGREE" algorithm provided by the HEC-GeoHMS model,the AV-SWAT model's "Burn-In" scheme and two different schemes provided by the TauDEM model.The ESRI-ArcGIS's hydrologic toolbox and the HEC-GeoHMS use a single flow direction algorithm(SFD) while the AV-SWAT model and the TauDEM model use a multiple flow direction algorithm(MFD),showing the latter offering better results because man-made downstream channels diverge again and the SFD cannot identify it.It was suggested that in general,the algorithms provided by the TauDEM model performed best.Some discussions on automatic delineations of lakes and reservoirs in large watersheds were also given.

Abstract:River flooding has been causing extensive losses to life and property, which is a serious concern worldwide. To minimize these losses, suitable planning and management practices are required for the floodplain mapping. Flash floods occur almost every year in the deltaic region of Brahmani and Baitarani river basins in India, during the monsoon season. Generally, 1D modelling is considered as a regular practice. But nowadays, model formulations include 1D for the representation of river channels and 2D for representing river floodplains. In the absence of uniform observations, a hybrid model (1D–2D coupled model) has been developed for this deltaic region to identify the extent of inundation and its depth during the flooding, since 1D models alone do not provide detailed information of flooding. Thus, a well-known 2D river hydrodynamic model iRIC was externally coupled with 1D (SWAT and SWMM) models to simulate and visualize flood scenarios and to identify the flood-prone areas. The hydrological model SWAT was calibrated and validated for Brahmani river deltaic basin, with the observed discharge data available. However for Baitarani river basin, observed flow data were missing and only gauge data were available at few monitoring stations. Hence, for Baitarani river basin, the SWMM model was developed and calibrated with the help of Monte Carlo method. Finally, the SWAT- and SWMM-based tributary stream flow outputs were fed together into the iRIC hydrodynamic model as input for flood inundation mapping. The discharge and water gauge data were used for the calibration and validation. The results obtained from the coupled model were found to be in good agreement with the observed data (RMSE value is 0.77 and 0.79 during calibration and validation, respectively), which enabled identification of the flood-prone areas. The developed model may be used as a tool for effective planning and management of natural disasters such as flash floods.

Abstract:Hybrid approach by integrating remote sensing datasets along with field measured river bathymetry data to estimate the river discharge to calibrate the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model can be used for the streams with narrow width. Calibration based on (i) stage‐discharge curve using spatial proximity approach and (ii) water level and river bathymetry was found to be a better approach. Evapotranspiration simulated from SWAT has higher variability as compared to that of evapotranspiration derived from MODIS. Calibration of a hydrological model is a challenging task, especially in basins that are data scarce. With the incorporation of regional information and integration with satellite data, the parameters of hydrological models can be estimated for a basin with scant or no discharge records. The main objective of this study is to calibrate and validate a hydrological model based on a limited amount of in‐situ measured and remote sensing satellite datasets in a data‐sparse region. Multiple techniques were applied for the model calibration: (1) stage‐discharge curves using a spatial proximity approach, (2) Simplified Surface Energy Balance actual evapotranspiration, (3) river discharge using a physical similarity regionalization approach, and (4) a new hybrid approach by integrating remote sensing datasets along with field measured river bathymetry data to estimate the river discharge. To demonstrate the methodology, we employed the widely used Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model in Manipur River Basin, India. The sensitivity, calibration, and validation of the SWAT model were carried out by using the Sequential Uncertainty Fitting Technique. During calibration, the coefficient of determination (R2) and the Kling Gupta Efficiency (KGE) were found to be in the range of 0.46–0.81 and 0.41–0.83, whereas during validation R2 and KGE were found to be in the range of 0.40–0.79 and 0.53–0.77 for the four different techniques. Among all the four techniques applied in this study, calibration based on (i) stage‐discharge curve using spatial proximity approach and (ii) new hybrid approach by integrating remote sensing datasets and river bathymetry were found as the better approaches as indicated by the statistical indices. The performance evaluation of the model through a new hybrid approach by integrating remote sensing and in‐situ measured datasets for rivers with narrow width represents a promising technique for use in a data sparse region.

Abstract:River discharges are critical for understanding hydrologic and ecological systems, yet in situ data are limited in many regions of the world. While approximating river discharge using satellite-derived water surface characteristics is possible, the key challenges are unknown channel bathymetry and roughness. Here, we present an application for merging mean river-reach characteristics and time-varying altimetry measurements to estimate river discharge for sites within the Mississippi River Basin (USA). This project leverages the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) River Database (SWORD) for approximating mean river-reach widths and slopes and altimetry data from JASON-2/3 (2008-Present) and Sentinel-3A/B (2015-Present) obtained from the Hydroweb Theia virtual stations. River discharge is calculated using Manning's Equation, with optimized parameters for surface roughness, bottom elevation, and channel shape determined using the Kling–Gupta Efficiency (KGE). The results of this study indicate the use of optimized characteristics return 87% of sites with KGE > −0.41, which indicates that the approach provides discharges that outperform using the mean discharge. The use of precipitation to approximate missing flows not observed by satellites results in 66% of sites with KGE > −0.41, while the use of TWSA results in 65% of sites with KGE > −0.41. Future research will focus on extending this application for all available sites in the United States, as well as trying to understand how climate and landscape factors (e.g., precipitation, temperature, soil moisture, landcover) relate to river and watershed characteristics.

Abstract:Estimations of reservoir bathymetry and storage are of great significance due to their substantial impacts on hydrological processes and water resource management. However, existing approaches for reservoir bathymetry construction often rely on field measurements, which restricts their application at regional and global scales. This study proposes a novel Approach for Determining the BAthymetry and water storage of channel‐type Reservoirs, hereafter referred to as ADBAR, for which only open‐access digital elevation model (DEM) and satellite images are required. The basic idea of ADBAR is to utilize the geomorphological similarity and topographical continuity of the reservoir inundation area with its lateral valleys and upstream/downstream regions to predict underwater bathymetry. Forty‐eight reservoirs with different topographic and geometric characteristics were selected for method validation. The selected reservoirs were all impounded after the year 2000, so the modeled reservoir bathymetry can be validated by the "reference" reservoir storage calculated using the exposed topography in SRTM DEM and the mapped water extents from spectral images. The difference between the estimated and reference storages is approximately 13.23% on average. Furthermore, the modeled results in two selected basins with dense reservoir distributions, the Upper Yellow River Basin, and the Tocantins River Basin, are comparable with the documented effective storage capacities. The validations for both individual reservoirs and the two large basins demonstrate that ADBAR is a robust tool for estimating reservoir bathymetries and storage capacities, and thus facilitates the modeling of reservoir impacts on water budgets at large and global scales.

Abstract:The study of water bodies such as rivers is an important problem in the remote sensing community. A meaningful set of quantitative features reflecting the geophysical properties help us better understand the formation and evolution of rivers. Typically, river sub-basins are analyzed using Cartosat Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), obtained at regular time epochs. One of the useful geophysical features of a river sub-basin is that of a roughness measure on DEMs. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is not much literature available on theoretical analysis of roughness measures. In this article, we revisit the roughness measure on DEM data adapted from multiscale granulometries in mathematical morphology, namely multiscale directional granulometric index (MDGI). This measure was classically used to obtain shape-size analysis in grayscale images. In earlier works, MDGIs were introduced to capture the characteristic surficial roughness of a river sub-basin along specific directions. Also, MDGIs can be efficiently computed and are known to be useful features for classification of river sub-basins. In this article, we ask the question when does a MDGI fail to classify distinct DEMs? We provide a theoretical analysis of a MDGI to answer this question. In particular, we identify nonrivial sufficient conditions on the structure of DEMs under which MDGIs cannot distinguish between distinct DEMs. These properties are illustrated with some fictitious DEMs. We also provide connections to a discrete derivative of volume of a DEM. Based on these connections, we provide intuition as to why a MDGI is considered a roughness measure. We empirically verify that MGDIs capture the topographical characteristics using the Lower-Indus, Wardha, and Barmer river sub-basins. We show that a simple decision tree based on MDGI features alone can successfully distinguish between sub-basins with a high accuracy. We obtain upto 94% accuracy-while the baseline of random classifier is around 33.34%.

Abstract:To improve global water resource assessment, quantification of the global river discharge while considering the effect of slopes is required. Rainfall patterns need to be transformed into discharge by a distributed hydrological model (DHM). The model is expected to represent the spatial variation in aspects of digital global mapping such land use, land cover, vegetation and elevation. Particularly, a digital elevation model (DEM) is crucial for tracking the flow direction and defining the river network in a basin. In this study, the performance of a 1 km resolution DHM is compared with that of a 90 m resolution DHM in simulating the discharge of the Meghna River in Bangladesh. This basin, which is poorly gauged, runs from the Assam and Tripura mountain regions of India to the metropolitan area of Dhaka. Within the Bangladeshi area of the basin, the slopes are very gentle and typical of flat plains, which make it difficult to represent the geomorphological characteristics with DEMs. As expected, the 1 km resolution model had more constraints in representing the actual river network. However, using a national drainage map it was possible to improve the DEM hydrologically using geographic information system tools. The input rainfall was obtained from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 V6 products available almost globally at 0.25° spatial resolution. The original TRMM data was improved using available rain gauges over Bangladesh. These correction factors were then also extended over India. The simulated discharge was evaluated during a flood event at two stations: Zhakiganj at the intake of the upper Meghna River and Bhairab Bazar at the outlet of the models. In summary, the simulation of river discharge using the 1 km resolution model gave reasonable results even though the condition of the slope was limited. Therefore, the procedure here shows the feasibility of developing global river discharge using global mapping. In future development, after setting thresholds at different control points, the potential flood damage to population centres can be evaluated for sound decision making.
