Abstract:The power output and stability of enzyme-based biofuel cells (BFCs) is greatly dependent on the properties of both the biocathode and bioanode, which may be adapted for portable power production. In this paper, a novel highly uniform three-dimensional (3D) macroporous gold (MP-Au) film was prepared by heating the gold "supraspheres", which were synthesized by a bottom-up protein templating approach, and followed by modification of laccase on the MP-Au film by covalent immobilization. The as-prepared laccase/MP-Au biocathode exihibited an onset potential of 0.62 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE, or 0.86 V vs NHE, normal hydrogen electrode) toward O2 reduction and a high catalytic current of 0.61 mAcm(-2). On the other hand, mutated glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) surface displayed bacteria (GDH-bacteria) were used to improve the stability of the glucose oxidation at the bioanode. The as-assembled membraneless glucose/O2 fuel cell showed a high power output of 55.8 ± 2.0 μW cm(-2) and open circuit potential of 0.80 V, contributing to the improved electrocatalysis toward O2 reduction at the laccase/MP-Au biocathode. Moreover, the BFC retained 84% of its maximal power density even after continuous operation for 55 h because of the high stability of the bacterial surface displayed GDH mutant toward glucose oxidation. Our findings may be promising for the development of more efficient glucose BFC for portable battery or self-powered device applications.
Coral-like cobaltous sulfide/N,S-codoped carbon with hierarchical pores as highly efficient noble metal-free electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reactions

Abstract:To develop efficient nonprecious electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on cathode in fuel cell is urgently required. Herein, a promising coral-like N,S-codoped hierarchical porous carbon with supported cobaltous sulfide nanoparticles (CoxSy/NS-HPC) with different molar ratio of S:Co was successfully fabricated via an economic method. The role of thiourea in the preparation process was found to be triplex. It is not only as a sulfur source, but also as sulfur-nitrogen dopant, and most importantly it participates in the formation of the hierarchical porous carbon which will reduce the diffusion resistance of the reactants and expose more active sites. Benefited from the carbon support, the hybrid architecture CoS1.097/NS-HPC (S:Co = 3:1) possesses high specific surface area (549 m2/g) and more active sites, as result it was developed as decent ORR electrocatalyst for fuel cell. Surprisingly, we found that CoS1.097/NS-HPC provides a more positive onset potential, higher cathodic current density and half-wave potential in alkaline media than CoS1.097 NPs and CoS1.097 supported on conventional mesoporous carbon (CoS1.097/MC). More importantly, compared with commercial Pt/C, CoS1.097/NS-HPC manifests higher current density, better durability, and more excellent methanol tolerance.
Stabilization of Bilirubin Oxidase in a Biogel Matrix for High-performance Gas Diffusion Electrodes

Abstract:Enzyme immobilization on solid conducting surfaces faces some challenges for practical applications in technologies such as biosensors and biofuel cells. Short-term stability, poor electrochemical performance, and enzyme inhibition are some issues that remain unsolved. Here, we propose a simple methodology for bilirubin oxidase (BOD) immobilization on carbon-based gas-diffusion electrodes for a four-electron electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The enzyme is incorporated into a Nafion® polymeric matrix and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde by a one-pot reaction in a buffered solution, producing a stable BOD-based biogel. The biogel prevents the formation of enzyme aggregates, producing a homogeneous bioelectrode surface, and allows access to the direct electron-transfer mechanism of multicopper centers buried in the enzyme. A biocatalytic reduction current of -1.52 ± 0.24 mA cm -2 at 0.19 ± 0.06 V was observed under gas-diffusion conditions. Additionally, the bioelectrode showed an unprecedented long-term stability under continuous operation combined with satisfactory catalytic current without redox mediator, demonstrating that the BOD-based biogel provides a suitable microenvironment for long-term enzymatic activity involving a bio-three-phase interfacial reaction. Therefore, the present study contributes new insights into enzyme immobilization to overcome the critical short-term stability issue of enzyme-based electrochemical devices for practical applications.
Bilirubin oxidase oriented on novel type three-dimensional biocathodes with reduced graphene aggregation for biocathode

Abstract:Aggregation of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) due to π-π stacking is a recurrent problem in graphene-based electrochemistry, decreasing the effective working area and therefore the performance. Dispersing RGO on three-dimensional (3D) carbon paper electrode is one strategy towards overcoming this, which partially relieves aggregation. In this report, we describe the graft of negatively charged 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) onto a graphene functionalized carbon paper electrode surface. 4-ABA functionalization induces separation of the RGO layers, at the same time leading to favorable orientation of the blue multi-copper enzyme Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase (MvBOD) for direct electron transfer (DET) in the dioxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at neutral pH. Simultaneous electroreduction of graphene oxide to RGO and covalent attachment of 4-ABA are achieved by applying alternating cathodic and anodic electrochemical potential pulses, leading to a very high catalytic current density (Δjcat:193 ± 4 μA cm−2) under static conditions. Electrochemically grafted 4-ABA not only leads to a favorable orientation of BOD as validated by fitting a kinetic model to the electrocatalytic data, but also acts to alleviate RGO aggregation as disclosed by scanning electron microscopy, most likely due to the electrostatic repulsion between 4-ABA-grafted graphene layers. With a half-lifetime of 55 h, the bioelectrode also shows the highest operational stability for DET-type MvBOD-based bioelectrodes reported to date. The bioelectrode was finally shown to work well as a biocathode of a membrane-less glucose/O2 enzymatic biofuel cell with a maximum power density of 22 μW cm−2 and an open circuit voltage of 0.51 V.

Abstract:The rational construction and preparation of efficient, stable, and economic electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are necessary for fuel cells. In this work, we fabricated a porous carbon skeleton structure consisting of bimetallic organic framework (BMMOF)-derived N-doped microspheres linked with graphene oxide (GO) conducting network (denoted as UA-Co/RSC@NGF, where "UA" stands for ultrasound-assisted, "RSC" stands for resin microspheres, and "NGF" stands for N-doped graphene framework) as an efficient ORR catalyst by an ultrasound-assisted and one-step pyrolysis method. In this configuration, benefiting from the support of carbon microspheres and the strong synergistic coupling with GO, the structure of UA-Co/RSC@NGF is stabilized, and the large specific surface area enhances the density of active sites. With UA-Co/RSC@NGF as the catalyst, significant ORR properties were achieved with a high half-wave potential ( E 1/2 , 0.90 V), an onset potential ( E onset , 1.03 V), and a large limited current density (5.37 mA cm −2 ). The durability and methanol resistance of UA-Co/RSC@NGF in alkaline media outperform commercially available Pt/C. This study may open a pathway for rationally designing multidimensional composite-structured carbon-based ORR catalysts for energy-related applications.

Abstract:Developing high-performance anion-exchange membrane fuel cells requires stable and highly active oxygen reduction (ORR) catalysts. To fabricate cheap and efficient porous carbon materials for ORR, heteroatom-doped carbon nanorods were synthesized by pyrolyzing Bacillus subtilis. The obtained carbon material maintained the uniformly distributed nanorods as original Bacillus subtilis and had inherent doped heteroatom. The obtained BS-2.0 had the highest specific surface area (209.04 m2 g-1) and the maximum ID/IG (1.0372). Its starting potential (0.93 V vs. RHE) and semi-wave potential (0.81 V vs. RHE) were close to 20% commercial Pt/C, and its ultimate current density was 3.98 mA cm-2@1600 rpm. Meanwhile, the stability of cycling potentiates polarization, and methanol tolerance of BS-2.0 were all greater than 20% commercial Pt/C. It was the inherent heteroatom, well-distributed nanorods, abundant pore distribution, and large surface area that contributed to its excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:The electrode material is a pivotal component in achieving efficient electron transfer in an enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC). Herein, novel hydrophilic carbon fibers (HCFs) with a helical structure are synthesized through chemical vapor deposition and are used as an electrode material for the immobilization of biocatalysts to fabricate bioelectrodes, where glucose dehydrogenase, serving as the anodic enzyme, is co‐immobilized with 1,4‐naphthoquinone on the HCFs for the catalysis of the glucose oxidation reaction (GOR), and bilirubin oxidase, as the cathodic enzyme, is co‐immobilized with protoporphyrin IX for the catalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It is found that thermal annealing the HCFs improves the bioelectrocatalytic performances of the as‐fabricated bioanode for the GOR and biocathode for the ORR, owing to the enhanced electron transfer kinetics. Subsequently, a membraneless glucose/O2 EBFC assembled by using the as‐synthesized bioelectrodes is able to generate a high open circuit voltage of 0.8 V and a maximum power density of 0.7 mW cm−2 at 0.44 V with good operational stability. The practicability in fabricating membraneless EBFCs makes the synthesized HCFs promising in miniature bioenergy devices. Trying to cell it: Hydrophilic carbon fibers with a helical architecture are synthesized to immobilize redox enzymes in a membraneless glucose/O2 biofuel cell. The enhanced electron transfer kinetics and the hydrophilic property show affinity toward glucose oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions, resulting in superior cell performance.

Abstract:Designing an artificial enzyme, from the perspective of bionics, to mimic the catalytic activity of natural enzymes is highly desirable but remains challenges. In response to the simulation of biological structure, we developed cytochrome c oxidase (CcO)-like single-atom nanozymes with FeN5 active centers (FeN5 SAs) in this work. Similar to the spatial structure of heme a3 in natural CcO, the active center of FeN5 SAs is axial N-coordinated heme-like structure and can be served as oxygen-binding site to complete oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in respiratory electron transport chain by catalyzing the oxidation of cytochrome c (Cyt c). Depending on this bionic structure, furthermore, FeN5 SAs exhibited competitive electrocatalytic performance towards ORR with a half-wave potential of 0.67 V (vs. RHE) at neutral condition. Coupling a glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) bioanode, the FeN5 SAs-based glucose/O2 enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC) obtained a maximum power density of 149.2 ± 4.0 μW cm-2 with an open circuit potential of 0.40 ± 0.01 V. In this study, inspired by the native structure of enzymes, we develop CcO-like FeN5 SAs and expand its application in EBFCs, which may provide an rational research approach to advance the development of nanozymes.

Abstract:Bilirubin oxidase (BOD) molecules were firmly tethered on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) functionalized with 2-hydroxy-4-amino-azobenzene (AZO-1). Further, a BOD-based electrode was prepared through the immobilization of enzyme on the nanocomplex via drop casting. The morphology, structural properties, surface chemistry, and physiochemical features of the prepared nanocomplex were investigated by microscopic, spectrometric, electrochemical, and other characterization techniques. The as-prepared nanocomplex with enzyme incorporation exhibited high loading amount of redox protein molecule, excellent mechanical robustness, and thermal stability. The complicated mutual interaction between the nanocomplex and protein molecules led to a partial ordered conglomeration of enzyme molecules with micelle-like surface characteristics. The combination of cofactors within BOD and AZO-1 formed a composite with significantly suppressed fluorescence emission and inferior capability of electron transportation. Direct charge transfer in BOD-based electrode could be achieved with redox group of GO as the primary electroactive site. A considerable negative impact on the efficiency of electron transport, turnover frequency of substrate conversion, and incident light utilization for this redox-protein-based electrode was verified. However, the as-prepared BOD-based electrode exhibited high affinity to oxygen molecules, and the oxygen binding was not hampered severely in the presence of ligation between adjacent heteroatoms within AZO-1 and T1 site in BOD.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess large surface area, high stability, and porous structure, making them suitable for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in the cathode compartments of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The examination of modified cathode electrodes is fundamental for accomplishing electrodes with high performance at low cost. Additionally, it is crucial to explore the impact of modified materials and methods on the electrode surface, as well as modifications in MOFs. In this study, for the first time the performance of the single and bimetallic Fe and Co with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) are evaluated as MFC cathode catalysts for ORR. Implementation assessments are accompanied by single metal-containing MOFs and iron–cobalt MOFs. These MOFs sonochemically synthesized are characterized by using XRD, SEM, and XPS techniques. The electrochemical properties of the MFCs are monitored by using electrochemical methods such as open circuit voltage (OCV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). According to results it is shown for the first time that the MFC with cathode modified with the Fe and Co containing bimetallic MOFs has the highest power density value when compared to cathodes with single metal containing MOFs. Hence, the bimetallic Fe–Co-BTC MOF containing cathode material is a promising candidate as an efficient and affordable ORR catalyst.

Abstract:The high surface areas of nanostructured electrodes can provide for significantly enhanced surface loadings of electroactive materials. The fabrication and characterization of nanoporous gold (np-Au) substrates as electrodes for bioelectrochemical applications is described. Robust np-Au electrodes were prepared by sputtering a gold-silver alloy onto a glass support and subsequent dealloying of the silver component. Alloy layers were prepared with either a uniform or nonuniform distribution of silver and, post dealloying, showed clear differences in morphology on characterization with scanning electron microscopy. Redox reactions under kinetic control, in particular measurement of the charge required to strip a gold oxide layer, provided the most accurate measurements of the total electrochemically addressable electrode surface area, A(real). Values of A(real) up to 28 times that of the geometric electrode surface area, A(geo), were obtained. For diffusion-controlled reactions, overlapping diffusion zones between adjacent nanopores established limiting semi-infinite linear diffusion fields where the maximum current density was dependent on A(geo). The importance of measuring the surface area available for the immobilization was determined using the redox protein, cyt c. The area accessible to modification by a biological macromolecule, A(macro), such as cyt c was reduced by up to 40% compared to A(real), demonstrating that the confines of some nanopores were inaccessible to large macromolecules due to steric hindrances. Preliminary studies on the preparation of np-Au electrodes modified with osmium redox polymer hydrogels and Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase (MvBOD) as a biocathode were performed; current densities of 500 mu A cm(-2) were obtained in unstirred solutions.
Absence of Nocturnal Plasma Melatonin Surge Under Long and Short Artificial Photoperiods in the Domestic Sow

Abstract:The circadian plasma melatonin profile of German Landrace sows was determined at 1‐h intervals for 31 h after exposure to each of four different artificial photoperiods. Under 12L:12D, melatonin concentrations in four sows during the light phase ranged from 22 ± 5.9 to 96 ± 25.1 pg/ml (mean ± SEM). During the dark phase (total dark) the individual concentrations increased two‐to fivefold over the peak individual light phase values in three sows. This nocturnal surge was of 3.8 h duration and peaked at 190, 294, and 546 pg/ml at 0100 h, which was 5.5 h after the onset of dark. The surge was abolished in these animals after exposure to 16L:8D and could not be reinstated by the subsequent exposure to 8L:16D. During the latter two photoperiods the mean concentrations were consistently less than the maximum mean value of 30.8 ± 10 pg/ml during the dark phase and 55 ± 21.9 pg/ml during the light phase. All the sows displayed regular estrous cycles during the study, and the day of the estrous cycle on which the samples were obtained under each photoperiod was not significantly correlated with the presence or absence of the nocturnal surge. A separate experiment using different animals confirmed the nocturnal surge under 12L:12D. In two out of four cycling sows the peak concentrations during the dark phase (122 and 110 pg/ml at 0400 and 0500 h) were two‐to sixfold higher than those of the light phase. Absence of the nocturnal surge under long and short daylengths may be a factor contributing to the decline in reproductive performance during the summer and winter months.
A 3D Covalent Organic Framework with In-situ Formed Pd Nanoparticles for Efficient Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:Non-platinum noble metals are highly desirable for the development of highly active, stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts for fuel cells and metal-air batteries. However, how to improve the utilization of non-platinum noble metals is an urgent issue. Herein, a highly efficient catalyst for ORR was prepared through homogeneous loading of Pd precursors by a domain-limited method in a three-dimensional covalent organic framework (COF) followed by pyrolysis. The morphology of the Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) was well maintained after carbonization, which was attributed to the rigid structure of the 3D COF. Thanks to the uniform distribution of Pd NPs in the carbon, the catalyst exhibited a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.906 V and a Tafel slope of 70 mV dec-1 in 0.1 M KOH, surpassing the commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.863 V and 75 mV dec-1 ). Furthermore, a maximum power density of 144.0 mW cm-2 was achieved at 252 mA cm-2 , which was significantly higher than the control battery (105.1 mW cm-2 ). This work not only provides a simple strategy for in-situ preparation of highly dispersible metal catalysts in COFs, but also offers new insights into the ORR electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Fabricating highly efficient catalysts towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), especially carbon-based metal-free ones, plays a crucial role in large-scale applications of various renewable energy conversion devices. However, the poor electrocatalytic performance of these carbon catalysts severely hinders their application because most active sites are deeply buried inside the carbon framework and fail to be accessible for the reactants. In this work, we fabricate multimodally porous N-doped dual-carbon catalyst with a sandwich-like structure, that is, N-doped mesoporous carbon spheres loaded on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (). The obtained catalysts exhibit interconnected hierarchical micro/meso/macroporous structure and a high specific surface area, which can simultaneously maximize the efficient utilization of active sites and facilitate mass transport, resulting in superior alkaline ORR activities. The half-wave potential of the was ∼0.85 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M KOH, preceding most of the non-noble metal catalysts and comparable with ∼0.86 V vs. RHE of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalysts. The established Zn-air batteries using the as the air-cathode exhibit a high-power density of 100 mW cm-2, outperforming the commercial Pt/C catalyst-based battery. This work supplies an interesting avenue in the rational construction of multi-dimensional hierarchically porous materials for advanced energy conversion technologies.

Abstract:Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) utilize enzymes to convert chemical energy present in renewable biofuels into electrical energy and have shown much promise in the continuous powering of implantable devices. Currently, however, EBFCs are greatly limited in terms of power and operational stability with a majority of reported improvements requiring the inclusion of potentially toxic and unstable electron transfer mediators or multicompartment systems separated by a semipermeable membrane resulting in complicated setups. We report on the development of a simple, membrane/mediator-free EBFC utilizing novel electrodes of graphene and single-wall carbon nanotube cogel. These cogel electrodes had large surface area (∼ 800 m(2) g(-1)) that enabled high enzyme loading, large porosity for unhindered glucose transport and moderate electrical conductivity (∼ 0.2 S cm(-1)) for efficient charge collection. Glucose oxidase and bilirubin oxidase were physically adsorbed onto these electrodes to form anodes and cathodes, respectively, and the EBFC produced power densities up to 0.19 mW cm(-2) that correlated to 0.65 mW mL(-1) or 140 mW g(-1) of GOX with an open circuit voltage of 0.61 V. Further, the electrodes were rejuvenated by a simple wash and reloading procedure. We postulate these porous and ultrahigh surface area electrodes will be useful for biosensing applications, and will allow reuse of EBFCs.
Direct design of cage-like bimetallic NiFe hydroxides with regulated electron structure to boost the kinetic activity of oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:The key to inhibiting agglomeration of bimetallic nanocatalysts and increasing their efficiency of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) highlights the necessity to design hollow porous structures in water electrolysis. Herein, the well-regulated NiFe bimetallic nanocages have been directly synthesized through the coordinated etching and precipitation (CEP) route, and then employed as advanced electrode materials in OER. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclosed that the synergistic effect between Fe and Ni significantly regulated the electron density and enhanced the conductivity. Significantly, the high catalytic activity of NiFe nanocages arises from the strong interactions between Fe and Ni along with rapid electron transfer, and the favorable structure with abundant porosity and large surface area. When employed as OER electrocatalysts, the electrode based on Ni2Fe1 nanocages exhibited a low overpotential of 280 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 combined with a low Tafel slop of 55.3 mV·dec−1 and large Cdl (double layers capacitance) value of 2.33 mF·cm−2. In , it is promising to directly design hollow porous structures based on bimetallic hydroxide to boost the OER performance.

Abstract:AbstractElectrochemical oxygen reduced reaction (ORR) is a critical element in clean energy development. Despite efforts to enhance gas transfer to the reaction interface, the low solubility of O2 molecules and slow diffusion rate in liquid electrolyte is still a significant challenge. Herein, we design an artificial outer membrane on microalgal cells, which consists of a carbon dots/bilirubin oxidase (CDs/BOD) ORR catalyst layer and a L‐cystine/Au nanoporous O2 supply layer. O2 generated by photosynthesis from microalgal cells then can be directly transported to the CDs/BOD catalytic interfaces, overcoming the sluggish gas transfer in the electrolyte. Thus, the cathode constructed by the fabricated microalgal cells realizes an ORR current density of 655.2 μA/cm2 with fast ORR kinetics, which is 2.68 times higher than that of a BOD cathode fed with pure O2. A membrane‐less glucose/O2 biofuel cell is further developed using the hybrid artificial cells as the cathode, and the power density is 2.39 times higher than that of a BOD cathode biofuel cell in O2 saturated solution. This biomimetic design supplies O2 directly to the carbon dots/BOD catalyst layer from the microalgae membrane through a nanoporous L‐cys/Au layer, providing an alternative solution for the transfer barrier of O2 in the electrolyte.
Metal-organic Framework-loaded Carbon-encapsulated Nano-catalyst as pH-universal Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalyst for Various Fuel Cell Devices

Abstract:As the quality of fossil fuels declines and environmental contamination worsens, for the next generation of sustainable energy storage technologies, fuel cells have enormous potential. However, the kinetics of the oxygen redox processes at the air cathode are very asymmetric, which leads to low energy efficiency and a short cycle life, particularly in the presence of huge area capacity and current densities. The creation of highly active and stable nonprecious metal catalysts (NPMCs) to replace Pt-based materials remains a significant challenge in comparison to the extensively studied oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis in alkaline conditions. Due to their abundant sources, environmental friendliness, and low cost, B, N co-doped carbon-based (BNCs) materials have rapidly emerged as a feasible substitute catalyst for ORR. Here, we introduce a brand-new, carbon-coated FeN0.056, B, N co-doped catalyst that is equally highly active and stable. Notably, the resulting catalyst exhibits surpassingly improved ORR activity and sufficient potential cycling stability under the pH-universal electrolyte environment, which can be applied to Zn-air batteries (ZABs) in alkaline electrolyte, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) in neutral electrolyte and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) in acidic electrolyte. Combined with earlier observations, the catalyst we learned would lead to a fresh discussion in the field for comprehending the pH-universal electrolyte environment during the ORR electrocatalysis.
