Abstract:The power output and stability of enzyme-based biofuel cells (BFCs) is greatly dependent on the properties of both the biocathode and bioanode, which may be adapted for portable power production. In this paper, a novel highly uniform three-dimensional (3D) macroporous gold (MP-Au) film was prepared by heating the gold "supraspheres", which were synthesized by a bottom-up protein templating approach, and followed by modification of laccase on the MP-Au film by covalent immobilization. The as-prepared laccase/MP-Au biocathode exihibited an onset potential of 0.62 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE, or 0.86 V vs NHE, normal hydrogen electrode) toward O2 reduction and a high catalytic current of 0.61 mAcm(-2). On the other hand, mutated glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) surface displayed bacteria (GDH-bacteria) were used to improve the stability of the glucose oxidation at the bioanode. The as-assembled membraneless glucose/O2 fuel cell showed a high power output of 55.8 ± 2.0 μW cm(-2) and open circuit potential of 0.80 V, contributing to the improved electrocatalysis toward O2 reduction at the laccase/MP-Au biocathode. Moreover, the BFC retained 84% of its maximal power density even after continuous operation for 55 h because of the high stability of the bacterial surface displayed GDH mutant toward glucose oxidation. Our findings may be promising for the development of more efficient glucose BFC for portable battery or self-powered device applications.

Abstract:Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) provide a new strategy to enable direct biomass-to-electricity conversion, posing considerable demand on sequential enzymes. However, artificial blend of multi-enzyme systems often suffer biocatalytic inefficiency due to the rambling mixture of catalytic units. In an attempt to construct a highperformance starch/O-2 EBFC, herein we prepared a starch-oxidizing bioanode based on displaying a sequential enzyme system of glucoamylase (GA) and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) on E.coli cell surfaces in a precise way using cohesin-dockerin interactions. The enzyme stoichiometry was optimized, with GA & GDH (3:1)-E.coli exhibiting the highest catalytic reaction rate. The bioanode employed polymerized methylene blue (polyMB) to collect electrons from the oxidation of NADH into NAD(+), which jointly oxidized starch together with co displayed GA and GDH. The bioanode was oxygen-insensitive, which can be combined with a laccase based biocathode, resulting in a membranless starch/O-2 EBFC in a non-compartmentalized configuration. The optimal EBFC exhibited an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.74 V, a maximum power density of 30.1 +/- 2.8 mu W cm(-2), and good operational stability.

Abstract:Recently, as an efficient renewable power source, paper microfluidic enzymatic biofuel cells have received significant attention. Due to their inherent characteristics and outstanding performance, a microfluidic paper-based analytical device for enzymatic biofuel cells (μPAD-EBFCs) has emerged as the best alternative to conventional power supplies for various miniaturized devices. This work presents a novel, user-friendly, and cost-efficient enzyme and mediator-immobilized electrochemistry-based shelf-stack-configured μPAD-EBFC. This Y-shaped colaminar fluid-flow EBFC has been realized using multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-composed Bucky paper (BP) as a bioelectrode, where GOx (anodic enzyme) and laccase (cathodic enzyme) were immobilized with optimized chemistry. The potentiometric oxidation and reduction performances of fabricated bioelectrodes were characterized using different electrochemical techniques. Subsequently, four such Y-shaped μPAD-EBFCs were realized in a shelf-stack configuration using a mini-three-dimensional (3D) printed platform, where the μPAD-EBFCs were connected in various series–parallel arrangements. With such shelf-stack configurations, 4 series-connected μPAD-EBFCs delivered the maximum stable open circuit potential of 1.65 V, with a peak power density of 46.4 μW/cm2 (58 μA/cm2) at 0.8 V. The generated output power is sufficient to power the small portable device, which can be easily and suitably tuned depending on the application.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Introducing Catalyst in Alkaline Membrane for Improved Performance Direct Borohydride Fuel Cells

Abstract:A catalytic material is introduced into the polymer matrix to prepare a novel polymeric alkaline electrolyte membrane (AEM) which simultaneously increases ionic conductivity, reduces the fuel cross-over. In this work, the hydroxide anion exchange membrane is mainly composed of poly(vinylalcohol) and alkaline exchange resin. CoCl2 is added into the poly(vinylalcohol) and alkaline exchange resin gel before casting the membrane to introduce catalytic materials. CoCl2 is converted into CoOOH after the reaction with KOH solution. The crystallinity of the polymer matrix decreases and the ionic conductivity of the composite membrane is notably improved by the introduction of Co-species. A direct borohydride fuel cell using the composite membrane exhibits an open circuit voltage of 1.11 V at 30 degrees C, which is notably higher than that of cells using other AEMs. The cell using the composite membrane achieves a maximum power density of 283 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C while the cell using the membrane without Co-species only reaches 117 mW cm(-2) at the same conditions. The outstanding performance of the cell using the composite membrane benefits from impregnation of the catalytic Co-species in the membrane, which not only increases the ionic conductivity but also reduces electrode polarization thus improves the fuel cell performance. This work provides a new approach to develop high-performance fuel cells through adding catalysts in the electrolyte membrane.
A needle-type biofuel cell using enzyme/mediator/carbon nanotube composite fibers for wearable electronics

Abstract:To realize direct power generation from biofuels in natural organisms, we demonstrate a needle-type biofuel cell (BFC) using enzyme/mediator/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite fibers with the structure Osmium-based polymer/CNT/glucose oxidase/Os-based polymer/CNT. The composite fibers performed a high current density (10 mA/cm2) in 5 mM artificial blood glucose. Owing to their hydrophilicity, they also provided sufficient ionic conductivity between the needle-type anode and the gas-diffusion cathode. When the tip of the anodic needle was inserted into natural specimens of grape, kiwifruit, and apple, the assembled BFC generated powers of 55, 44, and 33 μW from glucose, respectively. In addition, the power generated from the blood glucose in mouse heart was 16.3 μW at 0.29 V. The lifetime of the BFC was improved by coating an anti-fouling polymer 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) on the anodic electrode, and sealing the cathodic hydrogel chamber with medical tape to minimize the water evaporation without compromising the oxygen permeability.

Abstract:Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) utilize enzymes to convert chemical energy present in renewable biofuels into electrical energy and have shown much promise in the continuous powering of implantable devices. Currently, however, EBFCs are greatly limited in terms of power and operational stability with a majority of reported improvements requiring the inclusion of potentially toxic and unstable electron transfer mediators or multicompartment systems separated by a semipermeable membrane resulting in complicated setups. We report on the development of a simple, membrane/mediator-free EBFC utilizing novel electrodes of graphene and single-wall carbon nanotube cogel. These cogel electrodes had large surface area (∼ 800 m(2) g(-1)) that enabled high enzyme loading, large porosity for unhindered glucose transport and moderate electrical conductivity (∼ 0.2 S cm(-1)) for efficient charge collection. Glucose oxidase and bilirubin oxidase were physically adsorbed onto these electrodes to form anodes and cathodes, respectively, and the EBFC produced power densities up to 0.19 mW cm(-2) that correlated to 0.65 mW mL(-1) or 140 mW g(-1) of GOX with an open circuit voltage of 0.61 V. Further, the electrodes were rejuvenated by a simple wash and reloading procedure. We postulate these porous and ultrahigh surface area electrodes will be useful for biosensing applications, and will allow reuse of EBFCs.

Abstract:Here, an electron transfer enhanced redox mediator is presented that significantly enhances electron transfer between the host electrode and enzymes, as well as between adjacent enzymes, promoting seamless interfaces through multiple interactions. Biofuel cells (BFCs) offer an eco‐friendly route to convert biochemical energy into electricity. However, their performance is hindered by insufficient enzyme immobilization as well as limited electron transfer within the enzymatic electrode. While the incorporation of redox mediators (RMs) into enzyme layers has been shown to improve BFC performance through enhanced electron transfer, progress has plateaued in the last decade. Herein, a major breakthrough is presented realized by a novel strategy that exploits electron transfer‐intensified RM layers. Metal nanoparticles covalently bridged between neighboring RMs facilitate electron transfer ubiquitously. Electron transfer characteristics are enhanced not only within the RM layers themselves, but also at the glucose oxidase (GOx)/host electrode and GOx/GOx interfaces. This leads to a remarkable performance boost in the enzymatic anode. A hybrid BFC constructed with innovative anode and Pt‐based cathode exhibits a striking combination of high power output (2.3 and 8.5 mW cm−2 at 10 and 300 mmol L−1 glucose, respectively) and exceptional operational stability (≈80% and 47% power retention after 10 days and 1 month, respectively), outperforming all previously reported BFCs by a significant margin.

Abstract:The performance of biocathode in an enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC) in the real application is somehow overlooked. Herein, a wearable and flexible lactic-acid/O2 EBFC enhanced with an air-breathing biocathode is designed to solve the limitation of biocathode that arises from the low solubility and slow mass transfer of the dissolved oxygen. To improve the oxygen supply efficiency for the air-breathing biocathode, a superhydrophobic base electrode creating an efficient air-solid-liquid triphase interface is developed. The designed EBFC with an 'island-bridge' configuration is integrated by assembling the current collectors of air-breathing biocathode and bioanode on a commercial laminating film (LF) screen-printed with a noninterfering circuit. It is found that the biocathode/bioanode area ratio should exceed 9:1 so that the designed EBFC (1A//9C) can achieve the optimal performance. This EBFC delivers an open circuit voltage of ca. 0.75 V and outputs a maximum power density of ca. 1.78 mW cm-2. In addition, a scaled-up EBFC (total bioanode area: 1.5 cm2) successfully powers a self-developed low-power device of heartrate in the pulse operation mode when applied on a volunteer's arm.

Abstract:Aggregation of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) due to π-π stacking is a recurrent problem in graphene-based electrochemistry, decreasing the effective working area and therefore the performance. Dispersing RGO on three-dimensional (3D) carbon paper electrode is one strategy towards overcoming this, which partially relieves aggregation. In this report, we describe the graft of negatively charged 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) onto a graphene functionalized carbon paper electrode surface. 4-ABA functionalization induces separation of the RGO layers, at the same time leading to favorable orientation of the blue multi-copper enzyme Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase (MvBOD) for direct electron transfer (DET) in the dioxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at neutral pH. Simultaneous electroreduction of graphene oxide to RGO and covalent attachment of 4-ABA are achieved by applying alternating cathodic and anodic electrochemical potential pulses, leading to a very high catalytic current density (Δjcat:193 ± 4 μA cm−2) under static conditions. Electrochemically grafted 4-ABA not only leads to a favorable orientation of BOD as validated by fitting a kinetic model to the electrocatalytic data, but also acts to alleviate RGO aggregation as disclosed by scanning electron microscopy, most likely due to the electrostatic repulsion between 4-ABA-grafted graphene layers. With a half-lifetime of 55 h, the bioelectrode also shows the highest operational stability for DET-type MvBOD-based bioelectrodes reported to date. The bioelectrode was finally shown to work well as a biocathode of a membrane-less glucose/O2 enzymatic biofuel cell with a maximum power density of 22 μW cm−2 and an open circuit voltage of 0.51 V.

Abstract:This work presents the development of an enzyme fuel cell, termed "BioBattery", that utilizes multicopper oxidases as the anodic enzyme in a non-diffusion limited system. We evaluated various enzyme variants as the anode, including multicopper oxidase from Pyrobaculum aerophilum , laccase from Trametes versicolor , and bilirubin oxidase from Myrothecium verrucaria . Several combinations of cathodes were also examined, focusing on the reduction of oxygen as the primary electron transfer. The optimal pairing used multicopper oxidase from Pyrobaculum aerophilum as the anode and amine reactive phenazine ethosulfate modified bovine serum albumin as the cathode. BioBattery was integrated with our previously developed BioCapacitor, proving capable of consistently powering a 470 μF capacitor, positioning it as a modular power source for wearable and implantable systems. This research work addresses and overcomes some of the fundamental limitations seen in enzyme fuel cells, where power and current are often limited by substrate accessibility to the active electrode surface. Abstract:Abstract Presently, one of the most important aspects for the development of enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) is to synthesize the novel electrode materials that possess high current density, low open-circuit voltage (OCV) and long-term stability. To achieve the above attributes, lots of new strategies are being used by the researchers for the development of advanced materials. Nowadays, nanomaterials and nanocomposites are the promising material that has been utilized as effective electrode material in solar cells, supercapacitors and biofuel cells application. Herein, we account for a novel electrocatalyst as electrode material that comprised ZnO nanoparticles decorated on the surface of polyindole (PIn)-multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), for the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme and mediator (Ferritin). The PIn-MWCNT scaffold is prepared via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of indole on the surface of MWCNT and assessed by myriad techniques. The micrograph of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) designated the interconnected morphology of MWCNTs in the polymer matrix. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), confirm the crystallinity and different functional groups available in the synthesized material, respectively. The electrochemical assessment demonstrates that the ZnO/PIn-MWCNT/Frt/GOx nanobiocatalyst exhibits much higher electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of glucose with a maximum current density of 4.9 mA cm −2 by consuming 50 mM glucose concentration in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) (pH 7.4) as the testing solution by applying 100 mVs −1 scan rates. The outcomes reflect that the as-prepared ZnO/PIn-MWCNTs/Frt/GOx biocomposite is a promising bioanode for the development of EBFCs.

A Miniature Glucose/O-2 Biofuel Cell With A High Tolerance Against Ascorbic Acid

Abstract:This study demonstrates a miniature glucose/O-2 biofuel cell (BFC) with a high tolerance against physiological level of ascorbic acid (AA) by immobilising ascorbate oxidase (AAox) on both the bioanode and the biocathode. Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)-modified carbon fiber microelectrodes (CFMEs) are employed as the substrate electrode for the bioanode and biocathode. Glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) and bilirubin oxidase (BOD) are used as the biocatalysts for the electro-oxidation of glucose and for the electro-reduction of oxygen, respectively. SWNTs are used as the support for the both, stably confining the electrocatalyst (i.e. polymerised methylene blue, polyMB) for the oxidation of NADH co-factor for GDH and efficiently facilitating direct electrochemistry of the cathodic biocatalyst (i.e. BOD) for 0, reduction. The prepared micro-sized GDH-based bioanode and BOD-based biocathode employed for the bioelectrocatalytic oxidation of glucose and reduction of oxygen, respectively, are further over-coated with AAox to give a miniature glucose/O-2 BFC with a high tolerance against AA. The maximum power density and the open circuit voltage (OCV) of the assembled glucose/O-2 BFC are 52 mu W cm(-2) and 0.60 V, respectively. These values remain unchanged with the presence of AA in solution. In the human serum containing 10 mM NAD(+) and under ambient air, the maximum power density and the CCV of the assembled glucose/O-2, BFC with AAox immobilisation on both the bioanode and the biocathode are 35 mu W cm(-2) and 0.39 V, respectively. These values are remarkably larger than those of the glucose/O-2 BFC without AAox immobilisation on both the bioanode and the biocathode. This study could offer a new route to the development of enzymatic BFCs with promising application in real biological systems.
Bio-electrocatalyst Fe3O4/Fe@C derived from MOF as a high-performance bioanode in single-chamber microbial fuel cell

Abstract:As a promising green and storage/conversion technology, the microbial fuel cell (MFC) was generally restricted by the lower power density in application. Three carbonized derivatives of the same precursor metal organic framework (MOF) MIL-53(Fe) were prepared via carbonization at 385 °C, 600 °C and 750 °C in argon atmosphere. Experiments showed that carbonized MIL-53(Fe) (CM53) derivative at 750 °C produced Fe3O4/Fe@C structure and revealed the best performance as bioanode in MFC. As anticipated, the MFC with CM53–750/Ti anode demonstrated superb maximum power density of 1179.08 mW/m2, which was 88.04% and 36.24% higher than that of MFC with CM53–385/Ti and CM53–600/Ti anode. Moreover, the charge transfer resistance of CM53–750/Ti (0.23 Ω) bioanode in MFC was 90.49% and 87.29% lower than that of CM53–385/Ti (2.42 Ω) and CM53–600/Ti (1.81 Ω) in MFC. The BCA method and high-throughput sequencing proved that CM53–750/Ti bioanode exhibited good biocompatibility and the function of screening the dominant bacteria for electricity generation. The results were mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of derived carbon, iron and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs). Fe3O4 NPs and porous rod-like carbon promoted the enrichment and cultivation of microorganisms on the anode surface, while Fe NPs provided an efficient path for the transmission of extracellular electrons. This article proved that the carbonized derivatives of MOF have application potential in MFC.

Abstract:Future application of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) requires a high-throughput and more convenient pathway to manufacture high-performance anodes. In this research, inkjet-printed PANI gel on carbon paper was first fabricated and then successfully employed as anodes in MFCs. Thanks to the inkjet-printing technology, such anodes can be easily produced in large quantities. Moreover, these anodes possessed good conductivity and a porous structure, as well as the ability to electrostatically interact with bacteria cells, which contributed to a 6.1-fold increase in the output power over that of the unmodified carbon paper. Taken together, our study presents a novel strategy in preparing highly scalable, high-performance MFC anodes, in promoting the practical application of MFC technology.

Abstract:Abstract Glucose oxidase based enzymatic biofuel cell is the promising technology for implantable medical devices’ power supply. It can open up opportunities for the long‐term implantation of the medical devices like pacemakers without the necessity for replacement of the batteries. Increasing of the cathode efficiency is one of the issues that should be solved before a practical application of biofuel cells. The high catalytic activity of the cathode provides a significant contribution to the efficiency of biofuel cells operation. The creation of cathodes of implantable biofuel cell with the increased power density could resolve the problem with a slow kinetics of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction. It is especially urgent in the conditions of implantation in physiological fluids, where the oxygen concentration is relatively low. Enzymes application could be an optimal way to increase an efficiency of the cathodic reaction, but enzymes long‐time stability is still in question. Thus, non‐organic and synthetic organic catalysts are considered. In this study, a new type of a cathode for enzymatic biofuel cells is presented. This cathode combines two catalysts: inorganic with platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) and organic in the form of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) cross‐linked by poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDE). The received electrodes were investigated by several electrochemical methods: cyclic voltammetry, chronopotentiometry and linear sweep voltammetry method on a rotating disk electrode. It was shown that the combination of PtNPs and PEDOT:PSS provides the maximum cathodic current, due to the fact that both catalysts contribute to the oxygen reduction reaction. The maximum cathodic current was 7.5 μA for an electrode containing 5 % PEGDE with PtNPs, heat‐treated for one hour at 120 °C. The electrodes without platinum nanoparticles were also investigated. This research showed that PEDOT:PSS provides a significant contribution to the overall catalytic effect demonstrated by the electrode proposed in the study. Scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray fluorescence analysis studies showed that the electrodes with combination of PtNPs and PEDOT:PSS were almost fully covered by catalysts.

Textile-Based Membraneless Microfluidic Double-Inlet Hybrid Microbial-Enzymatic Biofuel Cell

Abstract:This study reports the development of a textile-based colaminar flow hybrid microbial-enzymatic biofuel cell. Shewanella MR-1 was used as a biocatalyst on the anode, and bienzymatic system catalysts based on glucose oxidase and horseradish peroxidase were applied on an air-breathing cathode to address the overpotential loss in a body-friendly way. A single-layer Y-shaped channel configuration with a double-inlet was adopted. Microchannels of biofuel cells were patterned by silk screen printing with Ecoflex to maintain the flexibility of textile substrates without harm to the human body. The electrodes were fabricated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate and a mixture of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and single-walled carbon nanotubes by screen printing. The effects of electrode materials, catalyst type, catalyst concentration, and glucose concentration in the catholyte were investigated to optimize the fuel cell performance. The peak power density (44.9 μW cm-2) and maximum current density (388.9 μA cm-2) of the optimized hybrid biofuel cell were better than those of previously reported textile- or paper-substrate microscale single microbial fuel cells. The developed biofuel cell will be a useful platform as a microscale power source that is harmless to the environment and living organisms.
In Situ Screen-Printed BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ Electrolyte-Based Protonic Ceramic Membrane Fuel Cells with Layered SmBaCo2O5+x Cathode

Abstract:In order to develop a simple and cost-effective route to fabricate protonic ceramic membrane fuel cells (PCMFCs) with layered SmBaCo2O5+x (SBCO) cathode, a dense BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY) electrolyte was fabricated on a porous anode by in situ screen printing. The porous NiO–BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (NiO–BZCY) anode was directly prepared from metal oxide (NiO, BaCO3, ZrO2, CeO2 and Y2O3) by a simple gel-casting process. An ink of metal oxide (BaCO3, ZrO2, CeO2 and Y2O3) powders was then employed to deposit BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY) thin layer by an in situ reaction-sintering screen printing process on NiO–BZCY anode. The bi-layer with 25μm dense BZCY electrolyte was obtained by co-sintering at 1400°C for 5h. With layered SBCO cathode synthesized by gel-casting on the bi-layer, single cells were assembled and tested with H2 as fuel and the static air as oxidant. A high open-circuit potential of 1.01V, a maximum power density of 382mWcm−2, and a low polarization resistance of the electrodes of 0.15Ωcm2 was achieved at 700°C.

Abstract:The anode electrode material is a crucial factor for the overall performance of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). In this study, a plain carbon paper modified with the CNT/MnO2 nanocomposite was used as the anode for the MFC and a mixed culture inoculum was used as the biocatalyst. The modified anode showed better electrochemical performance than that of plain carbon paper, and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) analysis showed the high surface area (94.6 m2/g) of the composite. The Mn4+ in the nanocomposite may enhance the electron transfer between the microorganisms and the anode material which facilitates electron conduction. Additionally, MnO2 can be used to store electrons due to its supercapacitance, which is comparable to that of the cytochromes present in the outer cell membranes of electrochemically active microorganisms. The MFC with a modified anode produced a maximum power density of 120 +/- 1.7 mW/m2, while the corresponding current density was 0.262 +/- 0.015 A/m2 at an external resistor of 800 omega with an open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.07 +/- 0.02 V. The unusually high OCV may be attributed to the high charge density developed on the bioanode by the charge accumulation in the MnO2 of the bioanode. This study showed that the CNT/MnO2 nanocomposite can be an excellent anode material for MFC.
