Abstract:The wasted disposable polypropylene medical mask is one of the common waste polypropylene materials. The waste mask is characterized by being non-biodegradable and carelessly discarded, which causes serious environmental issues and resource waste. This study aims to investigate the recycling of waste disposable polypropylene medical masks to address the ecological problem and transform them into amorphous carbon powders via the carbonization coupling with the high-energy ball-milling method. The recycled waste mask was applied as a carbon dispersant to prepare high-quality 8YSZ nano-powders and the obtained carbon dispersant owned smaller particle size and higher specific surface area than the commercial activated carbon powders. The as-obtained 8YSZ nano-powders were well-dispersed and nano-sized, which resulted in high relative density and ionic conductivity for the sintered 8YSZ ceramic body. These findings suggest that the proposed strategy in this study can recycle the waste disposable polypropylene medical mask to prepare amorphous carbon powders as a carbon dispersant for obtaining high-quality 8YSZ nano-powders and also provide an idea for the comprehensive utilization of other waste polymer materials.

Abstract:Disposable polypropylene medical masks are widely used to protect people from diseases caused by COVID-19 viruses worldwide. However, disposable medical masks are non-biodegradable materials, and the accumulation of waste masks can pollute the environment and waste resources without a reasonable recycling method. This study aims to recycle waste masks into submicron-sized graphite powders via coupling the carbonization method with high-energy ball milling. The waste masks were initially carbonized to get a carbon source after the carbon-bed heat treatment method. The resulting carbon source was a dense fiber structure with a diameter of about 10 μm and high quality for carbonized 10 h. Then, the carbon source turned into submicron-sized graphite powders after high-energy ball milling. The highest specific surface area, well-dispersed, smallest particle size, and narrowest particle size distribution of submicron-sized graphite powders were obtained after 12 h of ball milling. These findings suggest that waste face masks can be recycled to prepare high-added-value carbon materials and provide a green and low-cost method to reuse polypropylene waste materials.

Abstract:With the worldwide pandemic of COVID-19, a tremendous amount of face masks have been consumed and discarded, resulting in serious environment pollution and infectious hazards. Herein a green and high-yield route has been developed to recycle waste masks (WMs) into CNTs/Ni hybrids via catalytic carbonization. Our results exhibited that the yield of carbon was as high as 64.4 g/100 g WMs. Furthermore, the as-fabricated CNTs/Ni hybrids were applied for microwave absorption, which displayed superior performances, including a strong reflection loss of -56.3 dB and an absorption bandwidth of 4.3 GHz with absorber thickness of only 2.0 mm. The mechanism was mainly ascribed to the favorable synergistic effects of CNTs and Ni on conduction and magnetic losses, dipolar polarization, interfacial polarization and impedance matching. Thus, this work provides an environmentally friendly, scalable and cost-effective strategy for recycling waste masks into high-valuable carbon nanomaterials, and exploits their potential application for microwave absorption.

Abstract:As a common necessity, masks have been used a lot in recent years, and the comprehensive utilization of waste masks has become a research priority in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. However, traditional disposal methods suffer from a range of problems, including poor utilization and insecurity. To explore new solution ideas and efficiently utilize waste resources, waste masks and biomass wastes were used as raw materials to prepare mask-based biochar (WMB), bio-oil, and pyrolytic gas via oxygen-limited co-pyrolysis in this study. The obtained solid–liquid–gas product was systematically characterized to analyze the physicochemical properties, and the adsorption properties and mechanisms of WMB on the environmental endocrine bisphenol A (BPA) were investigated. The co-pyrolysis mechanisms were also studied in depth. Furthermore, the strengths and weaknesses of products prepared by co-pyrolysis and co-hydrothermal synthesis were discussed in comparison. The results indicated that the waste masks could shape the microsphere structure, leading to richer surface functional groups and stable mesoporous of WMB. Here, the risk of leaching of secondary pollutants was not detected. The theoretical maximum adsorption of BPA by WMB was 28.73 mg·g−1. The Langmuir and Pseudo-second-order models optimally simulated the isothermal and kinetic adsorption processes, which are a composite of physicochemical adsorption. Simultaneous pyrolysis of mask polymers with biomass polymers produces bio-oil and pyrolytic gas, which is rich in high-quality aliphatic and aromatic compounds. This could have potential as an energy source or chemical feedstock. The co-pyrolysis mechanisms may involve the depolymerization of waste masks to produce hydrocarbons and H radicals, which in turn undergo multi-step cleavage and oligomerization reactions with biomass derivatives. It is recommended to use the co-pyrolysis method to dispose of waste masks, as the products obtained are significantly better than those obtained by the co-hydrothermal method. This work provides a new contribution to the resourcing of waste masks into high-quality products.
Porous carbon materials derived from discarded COVID-19 masks via microwave solvothermal method for lithium‐sulfur batteries

Abstract:With the spread of COVID-19, disposable medical masks (DMMs) have become a significant source of new hazardous solid waste. Their proper disposal is not only beneficial to the safety of biological systems but also useful to achieve considerable economic value. The first step of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of DMMs. It is primarily composed of polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate and iron, with fibrous polypropylene accounting for approximately 80% of the total weight. Then, DMMs were sulfonated and oxidised by the microwave-driven concentrated sulfuric acid within 8 min based on the fact that the concentrated sulfuric acid exhibits a good microwave absorption capacity. The co-doping of sulfur and oxygen was achieved while improving the thermal stability of DMMs. Subsequently, the self-activation pyrolysis of sulfonated and oxidised DMMs (P-SO@DMMs) was further realized in low-flow-rate argon. The specific surface area of P-SO@DMMs increased from 2.0 to 830.9 m2·g-1. P-SO@DMMs sulfur cathodes have promising electrochemical properties because of their porous structures and the synergistic effect of sulfur and oxygen co-doping. The capacity of the samples irradiated by microwave for 10 min at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 C were 1313.6, 1010.9, 816.5, 634.4, 513.4 and 453.1 mAh·g-1, respectively, and after returning to 0.2 C and continuing the cycle for 50 revolutions, maintained 50.5% of the initial capacity. After 400 cycles, its capacity is 38.1% of the initial capacity at 0.5 C. It is slightly higher than the electrochemical performance of the sample treated by microwave for 8 min and significantly higher than the sample treated by 6 min. This work converts structurally complex, biohazardous DMMs into porous carbon with high specific surface area by clean and efficient microwave solvothermal and self-activating pyrolysis, which facilitates the development of carbon based materials at low cost and large scale.

Abstract:Numerous disposable surgical masks (DSMs) were consumed with the development of COVID-19 epidemic. Non-solid products recovered by pyrolysis is more than twenty species with low added value. Therefore, the search for a reasonable carbonization method can not only alleviate the pressure of global plastic pollution, but also produce considerable economic value. Here it is found that microwave cross-linking can promote the substitution of hydrogen atom in the polymer master chain of DSMs by hydrogen atom, which can reorganize the easily cracked DSMs into sp2-hybridized aromatic carbon, it can maintain 51.2 % carbon yield at1000 °C. The difference between the DSMs-based porous carbon obtained by in-situ and post-processing N doping was further compared, and it was found that the specific surface area of the activated in-situ doped sample (P-SNO@DSMs) was as high as 2278 m2·g−1, which had rich hierarchical pore structure and high heteroatoms doping rate. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of heteroatoms and hierarchical holes, P-SNO@DSMs sulfur cathode delivers a high specific capacity of 1550 mAh·g−1 at 0.1 C and exhibits excellent long-term cycling performance with the smaller capacity decay of 0.13 % per cycle after 400 cycles. In this work, clean and efficient microwave cross-linking not only realized the efficient recovery of waste DSMs, but also the application of the prepared materials can be broadened by adding additional heteroatomic sources in the process of microwave cross-linking.

Abstract:Pyrolysis studies often overlook the potential of pyrolytic gas as a valuable hydrocarbon resource, thereby hindering the production of advanced carbonaceous nanomaterials (CNM). This study aims to explore various configurations of a multi-zone tubular reactor to upcycle disposable face masks into non-condensable hydrocarbons as potential CNM precursors. The highest gas yield (56.2 wt%) was achieved using a 3-zone configuration (Z-1,3,4), attributed to the end chain scission mechanism. The increased abundance of light hydrocarbons (≤C10) in the resulting liquid confirms a greater extent of end chain scission in the optimum reactor configuration with cold zone retainment. Employing this configuration, different face mask types, including 3ply (polypropylene-based), KF94 (polypropylene-based) and N95 (polyester-based), were utilized as individual feedstocks or in various ratios as mixtures to investigate the resultant composition of hydrocarbon gases. This composition was compared with existing literature studies to identify suitable hydrocarbon gas compositions for CNM production. Mixing 3ply and KF94 face masks produced a consistent gas composition predominantly comprising propylene (62.3 – 66.9%) and ethane (15.4 – 16.8%) via thermal pyrolysis at 500 °C with a constant heating rate of 20 °C/min. However, the inclusion of N95 face masks increased CO 2 level fivefold, diminishing the gas quality as a CNM precursor. These findings underscore the necessity of segregating polyester face mask material from polypropylene face mask material prior to pyrolysis to ensure a consistent quality and yield of CNM precursors.

Abstract:The massive discard of spent masks during the COVID-19 pandemic imposes great environmental anxiety to the human society, which calls for a reliable and sustainable outlet to mitigate this issue. In this work, we demonstrate a green design strategy of recycling the spent masks to fabricate hard carbon fabrics toward high-efficient sodium energy storage. After a simple carbonization treatment, flexible hard carbon fabrics composed of interwoven microtubular fibers are obtained. When serving as binder-free anodes of sodium-ion batteries, a large Na-ion storage capacity of 280 mAh g -1 is achieved for the optimized sample. More impressively, the flexible anode exhibits an initial coulombic efficiency of as high as 86% and excellent rate/cycling performance. The real-life practice of the flexible hard carbon is realized in the full-cells. The present study affords an enlightening approach for the recycling fabrication of high value-added hard carbon materials from the spent masks for advanced sodium energy storage.

Abstract:The continuous spread of COVID-19 has produced a large number of abandoned disposable medical masks (DMMs), which have a greater negative impact on the environment and biosafety. In response to this issue, a method for rapid microwave sulfonation, nitrification and oxidation of DMMs was proposed to convert DMMs with low carbonization efficiency into aromatic carbon with good thermal stability, which not only maintained 51 wt% of initial mass at 1000 °C, but also achieved in situ co-doping of S, N and O. Subsequently, porous carbons derived from DMMs were synthesized by self-activation pyrolysis, which avoided consumption of alkali and metal salts in the traditional activation process. It was further found that low pyrolysis temperature was not enough to produce enough active material H2 and H2O to obtain high specific surface area, while increasing pyrolysis temperature could adjust the specific surface area of as-prepared carbon, ranging from 52 m2·g−1 to as high as 890 m2 g−1. Thanks to synergistic effect of S, N, and O co-doping and hierarchical porous structure, the first discharge specific capacity of sample synthesized by self-activated pyrolysis at 900 °C was 1459.8 mAh·g−1 at 0.1 C, and the discharge specific capacity retention at 0.5 C after 400 cycles was 52.3%.

Abstract:Waste masks pose a serious threat to the environment, including marine plastic pollution and soil pollution risks caused by landfills since the outbreak of COVID-19. Currently, numerous effective methods regarding disposal and resource utilization of waste masks have been reported, containing physical, thermochemical, and solvent-based technologies. As for physical technologies, the mechanical properties of the mask-based materials could be enhanced and the conductivity or antibacterial activity was endowed by adding natural fibers or inorganic nanoparticles. Regarding thermochemical technologies, catalytic pyrolysis could yield considerable hydrogen, which is an eco-friendly resource, and would mitigate the energy crisis. Noticeably, the solvent-based technology, as a more convenient and efficient method, was also considered in this paper. In this way, soaking the mask directly in a specific chemical reagent changes the original structure of polypropylene and obtains multi-functional materials. The solvent-based technology is promising in the future with the researches of sustainable and universally applicable reagents. This review could provide guidance for utilizing resources of waste masks and address the issues of plastic pollution.

Catalytic recycling of medical plastic wastes over La0.6Ca0.4Co1–Fe O3− pre-catalysts for co-production of H2 and high-value added carbon nanomaterials

Abstract:In this work, waste medical masks collected from daily life usage were pyrolyzed and catalytically decomposed with perovskite-type La0.6Ca0.4Co1–x Fe x O3−δ pre-catalysts for co-production of carbon nanomaterials and H2. The influences of catalysis reaction temperature and Co/Fe ratio in the investigated pre-catalysts on the yields and selectivity of the gaseous products and carbon deposition were systematically studied. The physicochemical characteristics of the produced carbon nanomaterials were comprehensively characterized by the state-of-the-art techniques. La0.6Ca0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3–δ possessed the highest hydrogen and carbon nanomaterials yields at 850 °C among all the investigated pre-catalysts. Especially, this pre-catalyst showed an excellent performance during the 10 cycles of successive deconstruction of plastic wastes with the highest hydrogen yield of 34.33 mmol / gplastic at the 7th cycle. More importantly, carbon nanotubes generated had higher graphitic characteristics and fewer defects. The presented results demonstrated that the developed perovskite-type pre-catalyst is a promising candidate for the production of hydrogen and carbon nanotube composites for energy storge applications from medical waste plastics.

Abstract:COVID-19 is a pandemic that has caused serious disruption in almost every day-to-day life around the world, and wearing a mask is essential for human safety from this virus. However, masks are non-recyclable materials, and the accumulation of masks used every day causes serious environmental issues. In this study, we investigate the recycling of mask materials for addressing the environmental problems and transforming as a high value-added material through chemical modification of masks. The recycled mask is applied as a separator for aqueous rechargeable batteries, and shows outstanding safety and electrochemical performance than the existing separator. This approach will lead to an advanced energy technology considering nature after overcoming COVID-19.
Purine-Doped g-C3N4-Modified Fabrics for Personal Protective Masks with Rapid and Sustained Antibacterial Activity

Abstract:Protective masks are critical to impeding microorganism transmission but can propagate infection via pathogen buildup and face touching. To reduce this liability, we integrated electrospun photocatalytic graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanoflakes into standard surgical masks to confer a self-sanitization capacity. By optimizing the purine/melamine precursor ratio during synthesis, we reduced the g-C3N4 band gap from 2.92 to 2.05 eV, eliciting a 4× increase in sterilizing hydrogen peroxide production under visible light. This narrower band gap enables robust photocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species from environmental and breath humidity to swiftly eliminate accumulated microbes. Under ambient sunlight, the g-C3N4 nanocomposite mask layer achieved a 97% reduction in the bacterial viability during typical use. Because the optimized band gap also allows photocatalytic activity under shadowless lamp illumination, the self-cleaning functionality could mitigate infection risk from residual pathogens in routine hospital settings. Both g-C3N4 and polycaprolactone demonstrate favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability, making this approach preferable over current commercially available metal-based options. Given the abundance and low cost of these components, this scalable approach could expand global access to reusable self-sanitizing protective masks, serving as a sustainable public health preparedness measure against future pandemics, especially in resource-limited settings.
Preparing Fuel-Range Chemicals via the Direct and Selective Pyrolysis of Disposable Mask Waste for Sustainable Environment

Abstract:After stepping into the pandemic, it has been entirely not bizarre to wear facial masks to diminish the spreading of viruses in human daily outings. Due to the low expense and stable protection capability, disposable masks are the most widely used types of medical masks. By functionalities and medical standards, disposable masks mainly consist of surgical masks and N95/KN95 respirators in the market. In the assembling scheme, there are typically three or more polymeric layers (i.e., mainly polypropylene) in disposable masks; in addition, the ear loops in masks are usually made from textile constituents, such as polyamides. Therefore, the vast utilization and rapid accumulation of disposal mask waste can directly bring an emerging crisis of foreseeable environmental pollution. To minimize and prevent such mask-led microplastic pollution, chemical pyrolysis of mask waste is one of the most feasible and promising strategies. Via the direct and selective pyrolysis of disposable masks, it can effectively convert the mask waste into high-value fuel-range chemicals, e.g., liquid hydrocarbon blends, aromatics, C1–5 gas alkanes/alkenes, hydrogen, etc. In this way, it can not only tackle environmental challenges from plastic waste but also afford sustainable fuels with low carbon emission and circular economy.

Photocatalytic Rejuvenation Enabled Self-Sanitizing, Reusable, and Biodegradable Masks against COVID-19

Abstract:Personal protective equipment (PPE) has been highly recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for self-protection during the disastrous SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. Nevertheless, massive utilization of PPE encounters significant challenges in recycling and sterilizing the used masks. To tackle the associated plastic pollution of used masks, in this work, we designed a reusable, biodegradable, and antibacterial mask. The mask was fabricated by the electrospinning of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), and cellulose nanofiber (CNF), followed by esterification and the deposition of a nitrogen-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) and TiO2 mixture. The fabricated mask containing photocatalytic N-TiO2/TiO2 reached 100% bacteria disinfection under either 0.1 sun simulation (200–2500 nm, 106 W m–2) or natural sunlight for only 10 min. Thus, the used mask can be rejuvenated through light irradiation and reused, which represents one of the handiest technologies for handling used masks. Furthermore, intermolecular interactions between PVA, PEO, and CNF enhanced the electrospinnability and mechanical performance of the resultant mask, which possesses a 10-fold elastic modulus and 2-fold tensile strength higher than a commercial single-use mask. The porous structures of electrospun nanofibers along with strong electrostatic attraction enabled breathability (83.4 L min–1 of air flow rate) and superior particle filterability (98.7%). The prepared mask also had excellent cycling performance, wearability, and stable filtration efficiency even after 120 min wearing. Abstract: With the prevalence of COVID-19, wearing medical surgical masks has become a requisitemeasure to protect against the invasion of the virus. Therefore, a huge amount ofdiscarded medical surgical masks will be produced, which will become a potential hazardto pollute the environment and endanger the health of organisms without our awareness.Herein, a green and cost-effective way for the reasonable disposal of waste masksbecomes necessary. In this work, we realized the transformation from waste medicalsurgical masks into high-quality carbon–nickel composite nanowires, which notonly benefit the protection of the environment and ecosystem but also contribute to therealization of economic value. The obtained composite carbon-based materials demonstrate70 S m–1 conductivity, 5.2 nm average pore diameters, 234m2 g–1 surface areas, and proper graphitization degree.As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the prepared carbon composite materialsdemonstrate a specific capacity of 420 mA h g–1 after 800 cycles at acurrent density of 0.2 A g–1. It also displays good rate performanceand decent cycling stability. Therefore, this study provides an approach to convertingthe discarded medical surgical masks into high-quality carbon nanowire anode materialsto turn waste into treasure.

Abstract:The use of disposable masks, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to an increased focus on sustainable disposal and recycling methods. This study investigates the feasibility of integrating shredded mask materials into granular soils to enhance their mechanical properties for engineering applications. After validating the selection of Discrete Element Method (DEM) contact parameters through the conducted physical experiments, a comprehensive series of DEM simulations was performed to explore the effects of various mask contents on the mechanical behavior of sand-mask chip mixtures (e.g., soil's strength and dilatancy) under different confining pressures. Additionally, the study analyzed the potential of mask chips in improving soil fabric, reducing contact force concentrations under shearing, and contributing to the soil's stability. The results suggest that waste face masks could serve as a valuable resource for soil stabilization. This not only provides a viable solution for mask waste management but also introduces a novel, eco-friendly material that could improve the engineering properties of granular soils. The findings underscore the importance of understanding the interaction between waste masks and soil and open new pathways for the recycling of non-biodegradable waste in geotechnical applications.

Abstract:With the ongoing global pandemic due to Coronavirus (COVID-19), the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), specifically single-use surgical masks, have been on a sharp incline. Currently, many countries are experiencing second and third waves of COVID-19 and as such have resorted to making face masks a mandatory requirement. The repercussions of this have resulted in millions of single-use face masks being discharged into the environment, washing up on beaches, floating beneath oceans and ending up in vulnerable places. The global pandemic has not only affected the economy and health of the world's population but now is seriously threatening the natural environment. The main plastic in single-use face masks is polypropylene which in landfill can take more than 25 years to break down. This paper explores an innovative way to use pandemic waste in concrete construction with the main focus on single-use face masks. Single-use masks have been cut-up by first removing the ear loops and inner nose wire to size and spread throughout five different mix designs to explore the possible benefits and uses within concrete. The masks were introduced by volume at 0% (control), 0.10%, 0.15%, 0.20% and 0.25% with testing focusing on compressive strength, indirect tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and ultrasonic pulse velocity to test the overall quality of the concrete. The introduction of the single-use face masks led to an increase in the strength properties of the concrete samples, as well as an increase in the overall quality of the concrete. However, beyond 0.20%, the trend of increasing strength began to decrease.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) nonwovens have been widely used in disposable protective masks and protective clothing, which are essential to protect healthcare workers from highly infectious diseases such as COVID-19. However, realizing the disinfection reusable function of PP nonwovens to reduce carbon emission or white waste pollution after extensive use has been still a great challenge. Herein, Durable Antimicrobial and Anti-fungal Post-disinfection polypropylene nonwovens were developed by co-grafting of Triclosan and Chitosan. The antibacterial performance test results showed that the as-prepared co-grafted polypropylene nonwoven has a > 99.9% of antimicrobial efficiency against E. coli , S. aureus as well as multi-drug-resistant P. aeruginosa , and the excellent anti-fungal performance against fungus ( C. albicans ) and mold ( A. niger ). Moreover, it retained excellent Antimicrobial and Anti-fungal Properties after disinfection 3 times with boiling water, 40 × diluted 84 disinfectant and 75% alcohol for 5 min. This work provided ideas for developing more effective pathogen protection and longer-lasting personal protective equipment to reduce the environmental impact of medical masks and personal protective equipment in terms of energy consumption, carbon emissions and waste generation. Graphical Polypropylene (PP) nonwovens have been widely used in disposable protective masks and protective clothing, which are essential to protect healthcare workers from highly infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The as-prepared PP-AA-CS-TCL nonwovens exhibited an antibacterial efficiency of > 99.9% against E. coli , S. aureus , and P. aeruginosa as well as the excellent anti-fungal properties against C. albicans and A. niger. And the antimicrobial and anti-fungal activities were maintained even after disinfection 3 times with boiling water, 40x diluted 84 disinfectant and 75% alcohol for 5 minutes each. This provides a new way of thinking about reusing disposable surgical products with polypropylene nonwoven and reducing environmental pollution.
