Abstract:High-gain Ho 3+ -doped optical fibers are imperative exigency for > 2 μm single-mode fiber lasers. Here, we have successfully developed and fabricated a low-loss Ho 3+ -doped fluorotellurite glass fiber. The high-power laser irradiation tolerance of the fiber was verified, and the end face of Ho 3+ -doped fluorotellurite glass fiber remained undamaged under a ∼ 70 W of 981 nm CW laser irradiation. An unsaturated maximum 6.35 W@2085 nm single-mode laser output with a slope efficiency of 90.4 % was achieved in a 25 cm short fiber by homemade 1976 nm laser in-band pumping. To the best of our knowledge, this is currently the highest slope efficiency reported for Ho 3+ doped fluorotellurite fiber lasers to date in a space laser cavity. The effects of the fiber length on the laser threshold, slope efficiency, and output wavelength are further discussed. This work offers valuable insights into prospective candidate materials and scheme designs for the future development of high-efficiency, long-wavelength mid-infrared ∼ 2.1 μm fiber lasers.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report continuous-wave (CW) lasers with wavelengths beyond 3 µm in homemade Ho 3+ /Pr 3+ co-doped AlF 3 -based glass fibers. The laser cavity was established through the integration of a dichroic mirror (DM, HR@3–3.1 µm) positioned at the pump end and a partial reflectivity (PR) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) situated at the laser emission end. The FBGs in AlF 3 -based glass fibers were fabricated by a fs laser direct-writing method, and the resonant wavelengths were 3.009, 3.036, and 3.064 µm, respectively. Under the pump of 1.15 µm laser, a maximum unsaturated output power of 1.014 W was obtained at 3.009 µm with an overall laser efficiency of 11.8% and FWHM bandwidth of 0.88 nm. Furthermore, in order to enhance the optical–thermal stability, the FBG was heat-treated at 200°C for 30 min, and a higher output power of 1081 mW (348 mW without heat treatment) at 3.036 µm was achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of 3–3.1 µm lasers by using FBGs in Ho 3+ /Pr 3+ co-doped AlF 3 -based fibers.

Abstract:In order to address the 'capacity crisis' caused by the narrow bandwidth of the current C band and the demand for wide-spectrum sensing sources and tunable fiber lasers, a broadband luminescence covering the C + L bands using Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fluorotellurite glass fiber is investigated in this paper. The optimal doping concentrations in the glass host were determined based on the intensity, lifetime, and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the fluorescence centered at 1.5 µm, which were found to be 1.5 mol% Er2O3 and 3 mol% Yb2O3. We also systematically investigated this in terms of optical absorption spectra, absorption and emission cross-sections, gain coefficients, Judd-Ofelt parameters, and up-conversion fluorescence. The energy transfer (ET) mechanism between the high concentrations of Er3+ and Yb3+ was summarized. In addition, a step-indexed fiber was prepared based on these fluorotellurite glasses, and a wide bandwidth of ~112.5 nm (covering the C + L bands from 1505.1 to 1617.6 nm) at 3 dB for the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) spectra has been observed at a fiber length of 0.57 m, which is the widest bandwidth among all the reports based on tellurite glass. Therefore, this kind of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fluorotellurite glass fiber has great potential for developing broadband C + L band amplifiers, ultra-wide fiber sources for sensing, and tunable fiber lasers.

Abstract:In this paper, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are inscribed in Tm3+-doped fluorotellurite glass fiber (TDFTF) and applied to construction of a 2.3-µm all-fiber laser. The FBGs with a center wavelength of 2.3 µm are fabricated by using the femtosecond laser point-by-point method combined with the slit beam shaping technique. Both the reflectivity and insertion loss of FBGs are investigated for different pulse energies, grating orders, and grating lengths. The FBG with a reflectivity of 90.4% is inscribed at one end of a 1.5-m-long TDFTF. Employing a 1410-nm/1570-nm dual-wavelength upconversion pumping technique, lasing at 2.3 µm is achieved. The maximum unsaturated output power is 1.88 W, and the slope efficiency is 37%. High stability has been demonstrated for both the wavelength and output power of the laser over an hour. This research is crucial for advancing the development of high-power fiber lasers operating at 2.3 µm.

Abstract:Lasers at similar to 900 nm have been of vital importance in various fields, including material processing, underwater communications, and strong-field physics. Although Nd3+-doped materials have been employed for the similar to 900 nm laser, the similar to 900 nm emission is in strong competition with the often more dominating similar to 1060 nm emission, which strongly limits the output power and applications. This paper proposes a direct coordination engineering approach, which introduces halogen to the nearest coordination of Nd3+ in glass for increasing the bond covalency, leading to stronger emissions at similar to 900 nm than at similar to 1060 nm. Iodide-incorporated Nd3+-doped silica fibers show prevailing similar to 900 nm emission rarely observed in Nd3+-doped materials. Using the created fibers, a power (113.5W) 50 times higher than the current record is accomplished based on an all-fiber structure. Our approach holds the potential for regulating the spectroscopic properties of other rare-earth-doped laser materials. Abstract:Nd3+-doped fiber lasers at around 900 nm based on the F-4(3/2)-> I-4(9/2) transition have obtained much research attention since they can be used as the laser sources for generating pure blue fiber lasers through the frequency doubling. Here, an all-fiber laser at 915 nm was realized by polarization-maintaining Nd3+-doped silica fiber. A net gain per unit length of up to 1.0 dB/cm at 915 nm was obtained from a 4.5 cm fiber, which to our best knowledge is the highest gain coefficient reported in this kind of silica fiber. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency varies with the active fiber length and the reflectivity of the output fiber Bragg grating (FBG), presenting an optimal value of 5.3% at 5.1 cm fiber length and 70% reflectivity of the low reflection FBG. Additionally, the linear distributed Bragg reflector short cavity was constructed to explore its potential in realizing single-frequency 915 nm fiber laser. The measurement result of longitudinal-mode properties shows it is still multi-longitudinal mode laser operation with 40 mm laser cavity. These results indicate that the Nd3+-doped silica fiber could be used to realize all-fiber laser at 915 nm, which presents potential to be the seed source of high-power fiber laser.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate a pulsed Er-doped ZBLAN fiber laser operating at 3.75 μm based on the gain-switching scheme. A diffraction grating is introduced as a wavelength selection component to enable stable lasing in this long-wavelength region that deviates from the emission peak of 4F9/2→4I9/2 transition in Er3+. Different from the conventional gain-switching behavior where the pulse repetition frequency of the output laser is same as the that of the pump, the gain-switched laser demonstrated here shows a variable pulse repetition frequency, which accounts for 1/n (n = 4, 3, 2) of the pump pulse repetition frequency, in response to the 1950 nm pump power. The output pulse characteristics, including average output power, repetition frequency, pulse duration, and peak power, are investigated in detail. Over 200 mW average output power at 3.75 μm was obtained at 12 W of 1950 nm pump power. This work demonstrates that the Er-doped ZBLAN fiber laser, in combination with gain-switched scheme, is a feasible and promising approach to generate powerful pulsed emission > 3.7 μm.

3 W Narrow-Linewidth Ultra-Short Wavelength Operation Near 1707 Nm in Thulium-Doped Silica Fiber Laser with Bidirectional Pumping

Abstract:We have developed an ultra-short wavelength operation of all-fiber Tm-doped laser system, in which the laser system was structured in a FBGs based linear cavity with FBG associated bidirectional pump mechanism at 1550 nm. The laser yielded 3.15 W of continuous-wave output at 1706.75 nm with a narrow-linewidth of ~50 pm. A high reflectivity FBG (HR-FBG) at 1550 nm was used to reflect the residual pump light and achieve the bidirectional pump mechanism. The maximum slope efficiency was improved from 23.2% without HR-FBG to 42.1% with HR-FBG at 1550 nm and the lowest pump threshold was reduced from 1.6 to 0.8 W accordingly. In the experiment, we have also investigated the dependencies of the slope efficiencies and pump threshold of the laser versus the length of active fiber and reflectivity of the output mirror (FBG) in detail. It is indisputable that the development of 1.7 μm silicate fiber lasers with Watt-level output power will open up a number of promising application windows.

Abstract:A broad Stark splitting of Yb3+-doped fluorophosphate (FP) core glass and phosphate cladding glass with outstanding thermal and mechanical performance were prepared in this work. Yb3+-doped FP core and phosphate cladding heterogeneous fiber with hexagonal-shape inner cladding was fabricated by the stack-and-draw method. A maximum output power of 2W was obtained with slope efficiency of 25.6% from a 35cm fiber. The laser spectrum had a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 1.5nm with the central wavelength at 1013nm. Therefore, FP glass fiber might be a good alternative for gain medium in short-linear-cavity single-frequency fiber laser.

Abstract:Nd3+-doped three-level (4F3/2-4I9/2) fiber lasers with wavelengths in the range of 850-950 nm are of considerable interest in applications such as bio-medical imaging and blue and ultraviolet laser generation. Although the design of a suitable fiber geometry has enhanced the laser performance by suppressing the competitive four-level (4F3/2-4I11/2) transition at ∼1 µm, efficient operation of Nd3+-doped three-level fiber lasers still remains a challenge. In this study, taking a developed Nd3+-doped silicate glass single-mode fiber as gain medium, we demonstrate efficient three-level continuous-wave lasers and passively mode-locked lasers with a gigahertz (GHz) fundamental repetition rate. The fiber is designed using the rod-in-tube method and has a core diameter of 4 µm with a numerical aperture of 0.14. In a short 4.5-cm-long Nd3+-doped silicate fiber, all-fiber CW lasing in the range of 890 to 915 nm with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) greater than 49 dB is achieved. Especially, the laser slope efficiency reaches 31.7% at 910 nm. Furthermore, a centimeter-scale ultrashort passively mode-locked laser cavity is constructed and ultrashort pulse at 920 nm with a highest GHz fundamental repetition is successfully demonstrated. Our results confirm that Nd3+-doped silicate fiber could be an alternative gain medium for efficient three-level laser operation.

Abstract:It is well recognized that a widely wavelength-tunable mid-infrared (MIR) fiber laser plays an important role in the development of compact and efficient coherent sources in the MIR range. Herein, the optimizing Er/Ho ratio for enhancement of broadband tunable MIR emission covering 2.6-2.95m in the Er3+/Ho3+-codoped transparent borosilicate glass-ceramic (GC) fibers containing NaYF4 nanocrystals under 980nm excitation was investigated. Specifically, the obtained GC fibers with controllable crystallization and well fsd-maintained structures were prepared by the novel melt-in-tube approach. Owing to the effective energy transfer between Er3+ and Ho3+ after crystallization, the 2.7m MIR emission was obviously enhanced and the emission region showed a notable extension from 2.6-2.82m to 2.6-2.95m after the addition of Ho3+. Importantly, we conducted a theoretical simulation and calculation related to the MIR laser performance, signifying that the GC fiber may be a promising candidate for MIR fiber laser. Furthermore, the melt-in-tube approach will provide a versatile strategy for the preparation of diverse optical functional GC fibers.
Single-frequency fiber laser of 315 mW at 1940 nm based on a Tm : YAG/Ho : YAG-co-derived silica fiber

Abstract:A 1940 nm single-frequency distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser was demonstrated based on a Tm : YAG/Ho : YAG-co-derived silica fiber (THCDSF). The THCDSF, which had a core dopant concentration of 8.02 wt.% Tm2O3 and 1.18 wt.% Ho2O3, was prepared via the melt-in-tube (MIT) method using a Tm : YAG and a Ho : YAG as the precursor core and a silica tube as the cladding. Employing 1.8 cm of the THCDSF, we achieved a maximum single-frequency output power of 315 mW at 1940 nm when pumped by a 1610 nm fiber laser. The slope efficiency of the laser was 29.68% for the absorbed pump power. The laser linewidth was less than 23.65 kHz, and the relative intensity noise (RIN) stabilized at -145 dB/Hz after exceeding 4.8 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a single-frequency DBR laser with a Tm3+/Ho3+ fiber as the gain medium.

Abstract:This study presents the experimental realization of a microsphere laser resonator designed to operate within the approximate wavelength range of 1.2 μm and 2.0 μm. This resonator, employing a Ho 3+ -doped fluoroaluminate glass microsphere, was stimulated by a 1150 nm laser, marking the first demonstration of its kind. The observed laser emissions at ∼1.2 μm and ∼2.0 μm were ascribed to the transitions of Ho 3+ ions, specifically 5 I 6 → 5 I 8 and 5 I 7 → 5 I 8 , respectively. The fabrication of the microsphere, possessing a characteristic diameter of approximately 50 μm, entailed the controlled melting of a fluoroaluminate glass filament through the application of a focused CO 2 laser beam. Concurrently, a tapered fiber with a waist diameter of ∼2 μm was created by subjecting a standard silica single-mode fiber to a process of controlled heating and stretching. The findings of this investigation suggest promising prospects for the development of multi-wavelength lasers utilizing fluoroaluminate glass microspheres, particularly in intricate environmental settings.

Single-frequency fiber laser at 1627 nm based on a self-designed Er-doped hybridized glass fiber

Abstract:Aiming at applications like expanding usable wave band of optical telecommunication and preparing Sr optical lattice clocks, a 1627 nm single-frequency fiber laser (SFFL) is demonstrated based on a 7-m-long self-designed Er-doped hybridized glass fiber (EDHF) and a linear cavity configuration with a loop mirror filter (LMF). By inserting a 10-m-long unpumped commercial Er-doped fiber as a dynamic Bragg grating into the LMF, a stable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) laser with an output power of about 10 mW is obtained. The optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of SFFL is over 50 dB, and the linewidth is about 3.7 kHz. The measured relative intensity noise (RIN) is less than -140 dB/Hz at frequencies of over 0.5 MHz, and a power variation in 1 h is less than ±0.26%. To our best knowledge, it is the first demonstration of a SFFL operating at the U-band. This 1627 nm SFFL can provide advanced light source technology support for many cutting-edge applications.

Abstract:The optical rotation, electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) of chiral sulfinates have been studied experimentally, and analysed by density functional theory calculation, aiming at establishing a reliable and convenient methodology to determine their absolute configuration. Through the study on a model chiral sulfinate with known absolute configuration, (R)-(+)-methyl p-toluenesulfinate ((R)-(+)-1), each technique was found to be reliable in assigning chirality of sulfinates. We then applied these methods to a synthetically prepared cruciferous phytoalexin, brassicanal C ((-)-2), and unambiguously determined its absolute configuration as S. The advantages and disadvantages of each spectroscopy on sulfinates are also discussed.

High-efficiency sub-watt in-band-pumped single-frequency DBR Tm3+-doped germanate fiber laser at 1950 nm

Abstract:Based on a 1.8-cm-long heavily Tm3+-doped germanate fiber and being in-band-pumped by a 1610 nm single-mode laser, a high-efficiency and high-power single-frequency distribute Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser emitting at 1950 nm is demonstrated. The DBR fiber laser has a maximum output power of ~617 mW and a slope efficiency for the absorbed pump power reaches to more than 42.2%. A stable single-longitudinal-mode laser output with a signal-to-noise ratio of greater than 63 dB is realized. The measured relative intensity-noise of the fiber laser reaches to around -150 dB/Hz at frequencies of over 8.4 MHz. It is beneficial to exploit the sub-watt and high-efficiency single-frequency laser from fiber oscillators directly, especially in the application of multiple paths coherent beam combination and optical medical technology.
Er‐Activated Hybridized Glass Fiber for Laser and Sensor in the Extended Wavebands

Abstract:Er‐activated fiber lasers are critical for many significant applications, including fiber communication, gas sensing, lidar and military. Although the design of suitable fiber materials has improved the performance of Er‐activated fiber lasers, extension of their operation wavebands still remains a significant challenge. Here, a compact all‐fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated, which can support lasing beyond 1630 nm, based on an Er‐activated hybridized glass fiber. The collaborative theoretical analysis and experimental characterization indicate that various distinct structure units can form in the hybridized fiber. This leads to the notable inhomogeneous spectral broadening. By using this hybridized fiber, a tunable fiber laser device is constructed and the wavelength can be rationally tuned in the range from 1609 to 1631 nm by mechanically stretching the fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) manufactured by the point‐by‐point femtosecond laser inscription. Furthermore, a new fiber sensor system based on this seldom exploration waveband is built and efficient ethylene detection is demonstrated. The results highlight that rational hybridization mediated short‐ and medium‐structure modification strategy, demonstrated here in Er‐activated fiber laser, can be extended to other rare‐earth glass fiber systems for the exploration of fiber devices at new wavebands. A novel Er‐activated hybridized glass fiber with notable inhomogeneous spectral broadening is designed and successfully fabricated. By using it, a compact all‐fiber laser with the tunable wavelength from 1609 to 1631 nm is demonstrated. The present findings provide new directions for inventing the lasers and expanding their application scopes.

Abstract:Fiber lasers, owing to the advantages of excellent beam quality and unique robustness, play a crucial role in lots of fields in modern society. Developing optical glass fibers with superior performance is of fundamental importance for wide applications of fiber lasers. Here, a new Nd3+-doped phosphate single-mode fiber that enables a high gain at 0.9 mu m is designed and fabricated. Compared to previous Nd3+-doped silica fibers, the developed phosphate fiber exhibits a significant gain promotion, up to 2.7 dB cm(-1) at 915 nm. Configuring in a continuous-wave fiber laser, this phosphate fiber can provide a slope efficiency of 11.2% in a length of only 4.5 cm, about 6 times higher than that of Nd3+-doped silica fiber. To showcase its uniqueness, an ultrafast fiber laser with ultrashort cavity is constructed, such that an ultrashort pulse train with a fundamental repetition rate of up to 1.2 GHz is successfully generated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest fundamental repetition rate for mode-locked fiber lasers at this wavelength range - two orders of magnitude higher than that of prior works. These results indicate that this Nd3+-doped phosphate fiber is an effective gain medium for fiber amplifiers and lasers at 0.9 mu m, and it is promising for two-photon biophotonics that requires long-term operation with low phototoxicity.
