Abstract:Today, pathogenic microorganisms are increasingly developing resistance to conventional drugs, necessitating the exploration of alternative strategies. In addressing this challenge, nano-based antibacterial agents offer a promising avenue of research. In the present study, we used an extract of Moringa oleifera, a widely recognized edible and medicinal plant, to synthesize biogenetic tellurium nanoparticles (Bio-TeNPs). Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering analyses revealed that the obtained Bio-TeNPs had diameters between 20 and 50 nm, and zeta potential values of 23.7 ± 3.3 mV. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the Bio-TeNPs consisted primarily of Te(0), along with some organic constituents. Remarkably, these Bio-TeNPs exhibited potent antibacterial activity against a spectrum of pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhimurium, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus agalactiae. In addition, findings from growth curve experiments, live/dead cell staining, and scanning electron microscopy observations of cell morphology demonstrated that Bio-TeNPs at a concentration of 0.07 mg/mL effectively disrupted E. coli and K. pneumoniae cells, leading to cell rupture or shrinkage. The biofilm inhibition rates of 0.7 mg/mL Bio-TeNPs against E. coli and K. pneumoniae reached 92% and 90%, respectively. In addition, 7 mg/mL Bio-TeNPs effectively eradicated E. coli from the surfaces of glass slides, with a 100% clearance rate. These outcomes underscore the exceptional antibacterial efficacy of Bio-TeNPs and highlight their potential as promising nanomaterials for combating bacterial infections.
Biocompatible tellurium nanoneedles with long-term stable antibacterial activity for accelerated wound healing

Abstract:Tellurium (Te) nanomaterials (NMs) have emerged as a new antibacterial candidate to respond to the complex global health challenge of bacterial resistance. Herein, Te nanoneedles (NNs) that act both chemically and physically on bacteria are synthesized by a facile method using Na2TeO3, urea and glucose. It is found that the prepared Te NNs have a strong affinity to the cell membrane of bacteria and subsequently promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bacteria, resulting in an excellent antibacterial effect toward Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative). What's more, this needle-like morphology also can physically damage the bacterial cell membranes. The Te NNs per se are inert in mammalian cells to produce ROS at a proper concentration, indicating considerable biocompatibility of this material. As a proof-of-concept, the antibacterial Te NNs were used as an anti-inflammatory reagent for promoting bacteria-infected wound healing in vivo, during which Te NNs caused no evident side effects to major organs in mice. Additionally, the antibacterial activity is maintained in the presence of surface oxidation of Te NNs after long-term dispersion in phosphate buffered saline solution. The needle-like Te NMs with long-term antibacterial stability and good biocompatibility have great potential for the treatment of associated infectious diseases.

Abstract:Tellurium (Te) is the heaviest stable chalcogen and is a rare element in Earth’s crust (one to five ppb). It was discovered in gold ore from mines in Kleinschlatten near the present-day city of Zlatna, Romania. Industrial and other applications of Te focus on its inorganic forms. Tellurium can be toxic to animals and humans at low doses. Chronic tellurium poisoning endangers the kidney, liver, and nervous system. However, Te can be effective against bacteria and is able to destroy cancer cells. Tellurium can also be used to develop redox modulators and enzyme inhibitors. Soluble salts that contain Te had a role as therapeutic and antimicrobial agents before the advent of antibiotics. The pharmaceutical use of Te is not widespread due to the narrow margin between beneficial and toxic doses, but there are differences between the measure of toxicity based on the Te form. Nano-tellurium (Te-NPs) has several applications: it can act as an adsorptive agent to remove pollutants, and it can be used in antibacterial coating, photo-catalysis for the degradation of dyes, and conductive electronic materials. Nano-sized Te particles are the most promising and can be produced in both chemical and biological ways. Safety assessments are essential to determine the potential risks and benefits of using Te compounds in various applications. Future challenges and directions in developing nano-materials, nano-alloys, and nano-structures based on Te are still open to debate.

Abstract:Green nanomaterials have gained much attention due to their potential use as therapeutic agents. The present study investigated the production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from a silver-resistant Bacillus safensis TEN12 strain, which was isolated from metal contaminated soil and taxonomically identified through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The formation of AgNPs in bacterial culture was confirmed by using UV-vis spectroscopy with an absorption peak at 426.18 nm. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the involvement of capping proteins and alcohols for stabilization of AgNPs. Moreover, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) confirmed the crystalline nature and spherical shape of AgNPs with particle size ranging from 22.77 to 45.98 nm. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) revealed that 93.54% silver content is present in the nano-powder. AgNPs showed maximum antibacterial activity (20.35 mm and 19.69 mm inhibition zones) at 20 mu g mL(-1) concentration against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively and significantly reduced the pathogen density in broth culture. Furthermore, AgNPs demonstrated significant anticancer effects in the human liver cancer cell line (HepG2) in MTT assay, whereas, no cytotoxic effects were demonstrated by AgNPs on normal cell line (HEK293). The present study suggests that the biogenic AgNPs may substitute chemically synthesized drugs with wider applications as antibacterial and anticancer agents. (C) 2020 The Authors. Abstract:Background: Nanoparticles are increasingly being used as an alternative antibiotic to target microorganisms, particularly for treating bacterial infections. In current study it was recognized processes such as metal ion release, induction of oxidative stress, and non-oxidative mechanisms. Developing resistance to nanoparticles is challenging for bacterial cells due to the multiple simultaneous actions against microorganisms, and require several simultaneous gene alterations within the same bacterial cell. Objective: To determine the effect of the titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) on the activity of the same bacteria that participate in dental caries (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli). Patients and Methods: The study included 50 patients who attended the dental clinic and took the samples by the wooden swap from the molar area (cervical area of inflamed gingiva and same samples taken from occlusal surface of molar). The collected samples were cultured on “Mannitol salt agar, Blood agar, and MacConkey's agar plates” for separation of the needed bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) that showed wide spreading in the oral cavities and dental carries. TiO2NPs are then created using pulse laser ablation, followed by coating preparation the nanoparticles materials (using a hybrid sol-gel and organ silicate nanoparticles), and finally the prepared nanoparticles to the coating solution and local paint was used for antimicrobial activity of the separated bacteria using different concentrations of TiO2 in the cultures. Results: Characterization showed the phase of the TiO2NPs was spherical, with very few irregularly shaped particles, and had an average small size in millimeters. Antimicrobial activity results showed a strong bactericidal effect against Gram-positive bacteria and demonstrated greater sensitivity to TiO2 nanoparticles at lower concentrations when compared to Gram-negative bacteria. Conclusion: It was shown that nanotechnology promise in treating various infections caused by bacteria, including dental caries. Notably, nanoparticles have demonstrated broad-spectrum antibacterial effects against Gram-positive bacteria.

Abstract:The emergence of antibiotic resistance has had a severe impact on human health and economic burdens, drawing attention to the development of novel antimicrobial therapies. Polymer-metal composites have shown evidence of therapeutic applications by exerting antimicrobial effects and delivering these antimicrobials with biocompatibility. Therefore, this study prepared and characterized chitosan (CS)-fabricated tellurium nanoparticles (Te NPs) for enhanced antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cytotoxicity applications. The CS-Te NPs were spherical, polydisperse, and distributed within the CS matrix with an average size of 37.48 ± 14.56 nm, as confirmed by TEM analysis. CS-Te NPs exhibited positive zeta potential in neutral (pH 7.0: 7.90 ± 1.86 mV) and acidic environment. XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of CS-Te NPs, and these nanoparticles exhibited good thermal and less porosity. A higher release of Te ions occurred from CS-Te NPs at an acidic pH. Further, CS-Te NPs displayed stronger antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against E. coli and S. enterica . Furthermore, CS-Te NPs exhibited significant free radical scavenging activity against ABTS and DPPH free radicals. Moreover, these nanoparticles demonstrated cytotoxicity against cancerous cells (A549 and PC3 cells) when compared to normal cells (NIH3T3 cells). Therefore, this study suggests that CS-Te NPs could serve as a substantial therapeutic agent.

Abstract:Background: Bacterial resistance is a challenging limitation in infection treatment. This work evaluates the potential antibacterial activity of conjugation of Tryasine peptide with silver nanoparticles against selected pathogens. Materials and Methods: The peptide Tryasine was produced using three subunits of tryptophan and three lysine amino acids, then its purity was determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The peptide was confirmed using mass spectrometry and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Silver nanoparticles conjugate with Tryasine was synthesized by adding Tryasine-silver nitrate solution in the presence of the reducing agent sodium borohydride. The presence of Tryasine-silver nanoparticles was indicated by the yellow-brown color and was further confirmed through ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations for Tryasine nanoparticles were determined against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and ESBL Escherichia coli using the microdilution method. Toxicity for nanoparticles conjugated with Tryasine was determined using erythrocyte hemolytic assay. Results: Tryasine alone was effective (MIC around 100 and 200 μM) against standard and resistant strains of bacteria used. However, Tryasine-silver nanoparticles were more effective with MICs ranging from 30 to 100 μM depending on the bacterial strain used. Tryasine-silver nanoparticles at concentration of 100 μM only caused 1% hemolysis on human erythrocytes after 30 min of incubation. Conclusions: The findings indicate that Tryasine-silver nanoparticles had good antibacterial activity against pathogenic strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Additionally, the conjugate showed low hemolytic activity and cytotoxicity. Therefore, conjugation of Tryasine with silver nanoparticles is a promising treatment candidate for bacterial infection with low toxicity.

Abstract:Introduction. Antimicrobial resistance in bacteria has become a global challenge for public health systems. Bacteria that pose the greatest threat to human health due to their increasing resistance to antibiotics include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella spp. The purpose of the work is to study the antibacterial properties of three tellurium derivatives against infections caused by Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella. Material and methods. The object of study is heterocyclic tellurium derivatives. A comparative analysis of the antibacterial properties of the syn-thesized tellurium derivatives on bacterial strains of Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella was carried out. To determine the antibacterial properties, the serial dilution method was used. The sensitivity of bacteria to the test tellurium derivatives and to antibiotics was assessed using the disk- diffusion method. Results. The study of three tellurium derivatives in different concentrations made it possible to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for organotellurium compounds, which were 1.35, 0.12 and 0.2 μg of the substance per 1 disk, respectively. For dioxysirocyclo-[4-methylphenyl] tellu-rochloride against E. coli and S. aureus, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC50) were determined to be 16.4 and 18.6 μg of the substance per 1 disk, respectively. Conclusions. The effect of organotellurium substances in relatively low concentrations on strains of bacteria Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella indicates the prospects for further study of the biological properties of tellurium derivatives containing various groups.
Comparative Study of Selenides and Tellurides of Transition Metals (Nb and Ta) with Respect to its Catalytic, Antimicrobial, and Molecular Docking Performance

Abstract:The present research is a comparative study that reports an economical and accessible method to synthesize niobium (Nb) and Tantalum (Ta) selenides and tellurides with useful application in the removal of pollutants in textile, paper, and dyeing industries as well as in medical field. In this study, solid-state process was used to generate nanocomposites and various characterization techniques were employed to compare two groups of materials under investigation. Structure, morphology, elemental constitution, and functional groups of synthesized materials were analyzed with XRD, FESEM coupled with EDS, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. HR-TEM images displayed nanoscale particles with tetragonal and monoclinic crystal structures. The optical properties were evaluated in terms of cut-off wavelength and optical band gap using UV-visible spectroscopy. A comparative behavior of both groups of compounds was assessed with regards to their catalytic and microcidal properties. Extracted nanocomposites when used as catalysts, though isomorphs of each other, showed markedly different behavior in catalytic degradation of MB dye in the presence of NaBH4 that was employed as a reducing agent. This peculiar deviation might be attributed to slight structural differences between them. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (G -ve and + ve bacteria, respectively) were designated as model strains for in vitro antibacterial tests of both clusters by employing disk diffusion method. Superior antibacterial efficacy was observed for telluride system (significant inhibition zones of 26-35 mm) compared with selenide system (diameter of inhibition zone ranged from 0.8 mm to 1.9 mm). In addition, molecular docking study was undertaken to ascertain the binding interaction pattern between NPs and active sites in targeted cell protein. The findings were in agreement with antimicrobial test results suggesting NbTe4 to be the best inhibitor against FabH and FabI enzymes.
Bacterially Synthesized Tellurium Nanorods for Elimination of Advanced Malignant Tumor by Photothermal Immunotherapy

Abstract:Probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) are employed as a bioreactor for intracellularly synthesizing tellurium nanorods (TeNRs) providing a biohybrid therapeutic platform (Te@EcN) for the elimination of advanced malignant tumor by photothermal immunotherapy. Te@EcN is found to possess superior photothermal property upon near-infrared irradiation, and can efficiently accumulate and retain in tumors, although EcN loses proliferation ability after the synthesis of TeNRs, thus inducing considerable immunogenic tumor cell death. Under co-stimulation by EcN acting as immunoadjuvants, maturation of dendritic cells and priming of cytotoxic T cells are largely promoted. In addition, Te@EcN can reprogram tumor-associated macrophages to ameliorate the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Thus, tumor metastasis and recurrence can be efficiently suppressed. Most importantly, owing to the non-pathogenicity of probiotic EcN and their non-proliferative characteristics after TeNRs synthesis, Te@EcN is found to be rapidly metabolized and cleared from the normal tissues, showing very slight acute side effects in healthy mice even at a relatively high administration dose. Therefore, the proposed combined therapeutic strategy based on bacteria-synthesized TeNRs may find great potential in improving bacteria-mediated tumor therapy with increased antitumor efficacy and reduced toxicity.

Green synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity of iron oxide nanoparticles with tigecycline against multidrug resistant bacterial strains

Abstract:Objectives The current study focused on the green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) using Salvia officinalis leaf extract, aiming to control nosocomial infections caused by drug-resistant bacterial pathogens. The nanoparticles were characterized and evaluated for antibacterial effectiveness. Methods The disc diffusion assay was utilized to determine the synergistic antibacterial efficiency of the biogenic IONPs against three nosocomial bacterial pathogens namely, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginos a strains. Results and conclusion The change of color of ferric nitrate solution from orange to black color after addition of the extract preliminary indicated the formation of biogenic IONPs. The phytosynthesized IONPs were characterized using UV–Vis spectroscopy indicating the formation of a broad band at 349 nm. Moreover, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed the formation of diffraction peaks positioned at 2 theta degrees of 24.80°, 33.41°, 35.03°, 41.28°, 49.15°, 53.41°, 57.37°, 62.40° and 64.31°, corresponding to lattice planes of (0 1 2), (1 0 4), (1 1 0), (2 0 2), (0 2 4), (1 1 6), (2 1 4) and (3 0 0), respectively. The phytosynthesized nanoparticles revealed a high antibacterial activity against the concerned pathogens at the concentration of 200 μg/disc with relative inhibitory zones of 21.14 ± 0.16, 17.26 ± 0.26, and 20.56 ± 0.62 mm, respectively against E. coli, P. aeruginosa and MRSA strains. The biogenic IONPs revealed the highest synergistic activity with tigecycline antibiotic against E. coli followed by MRSA and P. aeruginosa strains with relative increase in fold of inhibition values (IFA) of 1.79, 1.29 and 0.93, respectively. In conclusion, the water extract of S. officinalis facilitated the green fabrication of IONPs with distinctive physicochemical properties and synergistic antibacterial activity against the tested nosocomial bacterial pathogens.

Abstract:We have successfully constructed both doped and undoped metal oxide NPs of Mn, Zn, and Sn utilizing the coprecipitation method. Notably, doped ZnO NPs displayed a high capacity for eliminating up to 98% of organic contaminants from wastewater. ZnO exhibited the maximum zone inhibition for gram‐positive and gram‐negative microbes, measuring 31.5 and 37.8 mm, respectively. The superior % degradation and antibacterial activity of doped and undoped ZnO NPs can be attributed to their spherical nanoparticle shape and larger surface area. In this study, tellurium‐doped and undoped metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) (ZnO, Mn3O4, SnO2) are compared, and a practical method for their synthesis is presented. Nanocomposites were created using the coprecipitation process, and comparisons between the three material categories under study were made using a range of characterization methods. The produced materials were subjected to structural, morphological, elemental composition, and functional group analyses using XRD, FESEM in combination with EDS, and FTIR. The optical characteristics in terms of cutoff wavelength were evaluated using UV–visible spectroscopy. Catalyzing the breakdown of methylene blue (MB) dye, the isolated nanocomposites demonstrated very consistent behavior when utilized as catalysts. Regarding both doped and undoped ZnO NPs, the maximum percentage of degradation was found to be 98% when exposed to solar Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, which stand for gram‐positive and gram‐negative bacteria, respectively, and were chosen as model strains for both groups using the disk diffusion technique in the context of in vitro antibacterial testing. Doped and undoped ZnO NPs exhibited greater antibacterial efficacy, with significant inhibition zones measuring 31.5 and 37.8 mm, compared with other metal oxide NPs.

Abstract:Background: The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is an area of interest for researchers due to its eco-friendly approach. The use of biological approaches provides a clean and promising alternative process for the synthesis of AgNPs. Results: In this study, soil bacteria from different locations were isolated and screened for their potential to form AgNPs. The selected isolate, which was found to have the ability to biosynthesize AgNPs, was identified by molecular methods as Leclercia adecarboxylata THHM and its 16S rRNA gene was deposited in GenBank under the accession number OK605882. Different conditions were screened for the maximum production of AgNPs by the selected bacteria. Five independent variables were investigated through optimizations using one variable at a time (OVAT) and the Plackett-Burman experimental design (PBD). The overall optimal parameters for enhancing the biosynthesis of AgNPs using the supernatant of Leclercia adecarboxylata THHM as a novel organism were at an incubation time of 72.0 h, a concentration of 1.5 mM silver nitrate, a temperature of 40.0 °C, a pH of 7.0, and a supernatant concentration of 30% (v/v) under illumination conditions. The biosynthesized AgNPs have been characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The biosynthesized AgNPs showed an absorption peak at 423 nm, spherical shape, and an average particle size of 17.43 nm. FTIR shows the bands at 3321.50, 2160.15, and 1636.33 cm-1 corresponding to the binding vibrations of amine, alkyne nitrile, and primary amine bands, respectively. The biosynthesized AgNPs showed antimicrobial activity against a variety of microbial pathogens of medical importance. Using resazurin-based microtiter dilution, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for AgNPs were 500 µg/mL for all microbial pathogens except for Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC13883, which has a higher MIC value of 1000 µg/mL. Conclusions: The obtained data revealed the successful green production of AgNPs using the supernatant of Leclercia adecarboxylata THHM that can be effectively used as an antimicrobial agent against most human pathogenic microbes.
Combinational antimicrobial activity of biogenic TiO 2 NP/ZnO NPs nanoantibiotics and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid against MDR-pathogens

Abstract:The development of effective strategies against multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens is an urgent need in modern medicine. Nanoantibiotics (nABs) offer a new hope in countering the surge of MDR-pathogens. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of two attractive nABs, TiO 2 NPs and ZnO NPs, and their performance in improving the antimicrobial activity of defined antibiotics (amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, amox-clav) against MDR-pathogens. The nABs were synthesized using a green method. The physicochemical characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles were determined using standard methods. The results showed the formation of pure anatase TiO 2 NPs and hexagonal ZnO NPs with an average particle size of 38.65 nm and 57.87 nm, respectively. The values of zeta potential indicated the high stability of the samples. At 8 mg/mL, both nABs exhibited 100% antioxidant activity, while ZnO showed significantly higher activity at lower concentrations. The antibiofilm assay showed that both nABs could inhibit the formation of biofilms of Acinetobacter baumannii 80 and Escherichia coli 27G (MDR-isolates). However, ZnO NPs showed superior antibiofilm activity (100%) against E. coli 27G. The MIC values were determined to be 8 (1), 2 (2), and 4 (4) mg/mL for amox-clav, TiO 2 NPs, and ZnO NPs against A. baumannii 80 ( E. coli 27G), respectively. The results showed that both nABs had synergistically enhanced antibacterial performance in combination with amox-clav. Specifically, an 8-fold reduction in MIC values of antibiotics was observed when they were combined with nABs. These findings highlight the potential of TiO 2 NPs and ZnO NPs as effective nanoantibiotics against MDR-pathogens. The synergistic effect observed when combining nABs with antibiotics suggests a promising approach for combating antibiotic resistance. Further research and development in this area could lead to the development of more effective treatment strategies against MDR infections.

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), caused by microbial infections, has become a major contributor to morbid rates of mortality worldwide and a serious threat to public health. The exponential increase in resistant pathogen strains including Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) poses significant hurdles in the health sector due to their greater resistance to traditional treatments and medicines. Efforts to tackle infectious diseases caused by resistant microbes have prompted the development of novel antibacterial agents. Herein, we present selenium and copper oxide monometallic nanoparticles (Se-MMNPs and CuO-MMNPs), characterized using various techniques and evaluated for their antibacterial potential via disc diffusion, determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), antibiofilm, and killing kinetic action. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques confirmed the size-distribution, spherical-shape, stability, elemental composition, and structural aspects of the synthesized nanoparticles. The MIC values of Se-MMNPs and CuO-MMNPs against S. aureus and E. coli were determined to be 125 μg/mL and 100 μg/mL, respectively. Time–kill kinetics studies revealed that CuO-MMNPs efficiently mitigate the growth of S. aureus and E. coli within 3 and 3.5 h while Se-MMNPs took 4 and 5 h, respectively. Moreover, CuO-MMNPs demonstrated better inhibition compared to Se-MMNPs. Overall, the proposed materials exhibited promising antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli pathogens.

Abstract:Under the current climate, physicians prescribe antibiotics for treating bacterial infections, and such a limitation to a single class of drugs is disadvantageous since antibiotic-resistant bacteria have adapted to withstanding their stresses. Antibiotic alternatives are sought, and herein metal nanoparticles comprised of the rare earth elements cerium and yttrium were determined to invoke toxicity on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and a multi-drug-resistant strain of Escherichia coli (MDR E. coli). Ceria nanoparticles, yttrium-doped ceria nanoparticles, and cerium-doped yttria nanoparticles were fabricated by a wet chemical route, homogeneous precipitation in hexamethylenetetramine (HMT). To demonstrate the drastic variations in nanoparticle structure and toxicity that occur when the synthesis method and solvent are substituted, two additional approaches involving solvothermal and hydrothermal reactions were pursued in the production of yttrium-containing nanoparticles. Intrinsic nanoparticle features of size, morphology, and composition were construed by physiochemical characterizations, which aided in the elaboration of chemical reaction and growth mechanisms. It was determined by in vitro plate count assays that ceria nanoparticles which had been doped using the yttrium metal precursor after 30 min of the HMT reaction, at 500 μg/mL, were the most effective at inhibiting MRSA growth without imposing significant cytotoxicity on human dermal fibroblast cells. A total of 500 μg/mL of cerium- and yttrium-containing nanoparticles, prepared in a 1:1 molar ratio, were similarly biocompatible and antimicrobial, in the case of MDR E. coli. Indeed, as this study showed, nanoalternatives to antibiotics are feasible, adaptable, and can be facilely produced. The possible clinical applications of the rare earth metal nanoparticles are variegated, and ceria and yttria nanoparticles are additionally credited in the literature as dynamic antioxidants, regulators of tissue regeneration, and anticancer agents.

Abstract:Abstract The production of alternative and effective medicines is crucial given that antibiotic resistance is currently a global health concern. Several biochemical identification tests were used to screen for Staphylococcus aureus isolates. Analysis of Artemisia annua extract was performed using a trace GC‒mass spectrometer, which revealed that the A. annua extract contains numerous compounds, such as artemisinins, palmitic acid and other vital essential compounds that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The isolate st.8 was resistant to cefoxitin, oxacillin, and cephalosporins; furthermore, MALDI-TOF/MS Biotyper® identified it as methicillin-resistant S. aureus with confidence value 99.9% of mass spectrum compared with reference spectra. The synthesis of green silver nanoparticles based on A. annua as a reducing agent was confirmed via partial characterizations: (HR-TEM), (XRD), (SEM), (EDX) and (FTIR) analysis. The significant of antibacterial activity of the new green material (AgNPs) was achieved by determining the agar well diffusion assay. Furthermore, compared with those in the Staphylococcus-infected group, a significant decrease in hematological parameters was observed, with an increase in antioxidant biomarkers, a decrease in interstitial tissue thickening by inflammatory cells, and a weak positive immune reaction in a few cells (TNF-α and iNOS) in rats. Overall, this study is a promising step toward the development of new and effective strategies for combating MRSA infections.

Abstract:A series of tellurated azo compounds [i.e. (4-HOC6H4N=N-Ar)TeBr3 and (4-HOC6H4N=N-Ar)2TeBr2, where Ar=5-BrC6H3, 5-CH3C6H3 and 5-NO2C6H3] were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding 2-(4-hydroxyphenylazo)aryl mercury chloride with tellurium tetrabromide in 1:1 and 2:1 mole ratio, respectively in dry dioxane as a solvent. The reduction of (4-HOC6H4N=N-Ar)TeBr3 by hydrazine hydrate gave the corresponding ditelluride (i.e., (4-HOC6H4N=N-Ar)2Te2). Treatment of (4-HOC6H4N=N-Ar)2TeBr2 with hydrazine hydrate afforded the corresponding tellurides, (4-HOC6H4N=N-Ar)2Te), in good yields. The structures of all newly synthesized compounds were assigned on the basis of their elemental and spectroscopic data. The antibacterial activity of tellurated azo compounds along with mercurated azo compounds was tested with agar diffusion method against the bacteria strains Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The antibacterial activities of tellurated azo compounds were in some cases equal or better than those of the reference drug. The mercurated azo compounds were found to be the more antibacterial activity of than those of tellurated azo compounds.
