Abstract:Since the clock of antimicrobial resistance was set, modern medicine has shed light on a new cornerstone in technology to overcome the worldwide dread of the post-antimicrobial era. Research organizations are exploring the use of nanotechnology to modify metallic crystals from macro to nanoscale size, demonstrating significant interest in the field of antimicrobials. Herein, the antimicrobial activities of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), cobalt aluminum oxide (CoAl2O4), and aluminum doped zinc oxide (Zn0.9Al0.1O) nanoparticles were examined against some nosocomial pathogens. The study confirmed the formation and characterization of Al2O3, CoAl2O4, and Zn0.9Al0.1O nanoparticles using various techniques, revealing the generation of pure nanoscale nanoparticles. With inhibition zones ranging from 9 to 14 mm and minimum inhibitory concentrations varying from 4 mg/mL to 16 mg/mL, the produced nanoparticles showed strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Meanwhile, the bactericidal concentrations ranged from 8 mg/mL to 40 mg/mL. In culture, Zn0.9Al0.1O NPs demonstrated a unique ability to inhibit the development of nosocomial infections with high bactericidal activity (8 mg/mL). Transmission electron microscope images revealed changes in cell shape, bacterial cell wall morphology, cytoplasmic membrane, and protoplasm due to the introduction of tested nanoparticles. These results pave the way for the use of these easily bacterial wall-piercing nanoparticles in combination with potent antibiotics to overcome the majority of bacterial strains' resistance.
The antimicrobial effect of silver nanoparticles coated with silica against human pathogenic bacteria and fungi

Abstract:The antibacterial property of silver (Ag) has been known since ancient time. It is reported in the literature that silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibit improved antibacterial and antifungal properties in comparison to silver ions of equivalent metallic Ag concentration.A simple method has been used based on solenoid soles for the synthesis of nanoparticles of silver coated on silica. AgNPs were compared positively with silver nitrate solution and ampicillin standard antibiotics at a concentration of 50μg / mL (Table 1 and 2). AgNPs mentioned in the silica activity exhibited more than standard silver nitrate and antibiotics. AgNPs were fairly toxic to Salmonella sp., Neisseria sp., Klebsiella sp., and Pseudomonas sp. with an inhibition zone 21, 24, 16, 23 mm respectively. AgNPs exhibited strong antifungal activity against fungal strains (Candida sp., Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus) in different concentrations such as 30-50 and 60 μg/ml were examined for antifungal activity. AgNPs revealed the highest antifungal activity with the inhibition zone 26, 25 and 22 mm respectively. Results of the present study prevealed that AgNPs have a remarkable potential as antimicrobial agent in treating infectious diseases.
Antimicrobial Activity of ZnS and ZnO‐TOP Nanoparticles Againts Pathogenic Bacteria

Abstract:This study aims to synthesize ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) and investigate their biocidal effects, along with those of ZnO‐Trioctylphosphine (ZnO‐TOP) NPs, on various pathogenic microbes. The NPs were synthesized via the polyol method using the forced hydrolysis of zinc acetate. They were characterized by XRD and TEM. The average sizes of ZnS and ZnO‐TOP are 3.63 nm and 16.28 nm, respectively. The antimicrobial activities were assessed using agar‐well diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and biofilm inhibition. The results showed that ZnS and ZnO‐TOP NPs have potent antimicrobial activity against all tested pathogen microbes. A zone of maximum inhibition (ZMI) of 20±0.54 and 22±0.26 was observed in the case of ZnS for Acinetobacter baumannii and Candida albicans, respectively. For ZnO‐TOP, a ZMI of 20±0.15 and 20±0.19 is obtained for Pseudomonas. aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and A. baumannii, respectively. Percentages of biofilm inhibition at 128 μg/ml were notably high for Enterococcus faecalis (96.83% with ZnO‐TOP and 91.17% with ZnS) and Staphylococcus aureus (87.27% with ZnO‐TOP and 76.37% with ZnS). The results suggest that ZnS and ZnO‐TOP nanoparticles have promising potential as effective antimicrobial agents, especially against biofilm‐forming pathogens, indicating their potential for future use in treating microbial infections.

[Short- and long-term prognosis of myocardial infarct. Contributions and limitations of the clinical aspects and non-invasive technics].

Abstract:Clinical variables and those obtained by non-invasive techniques were recorded in a series of 306 patients discharged from hospital after an acute myocardial infarction. We studied the prognostic value at 2 and 12 months of these variables (alive/dead). The results of simple clinical data were as discriminant as those from more elaborated techniques. When the prognostic value of the same data at 12 months was studied in those surviving for two months, most of the predictive variables lost their discriminant power. The study shows that the predictive value of many of the predischarge variables usually taken into account in the assessment of long term risk, does not extend beyond the first two months.
Silver nanoparticles as an antimicrobial agent: A case study on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli as models for Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract:The current research was focused on the characterization and antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) produced by Bacillus licheniformis NM120-17. The synthesis was initially observed by a colour change from pale yellow to brown which was further confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The AgNPs were characterized using TEM, EDAX and FTIR. The synthesized nanoparticles were found to be spherical and uniformly distributed with a size in the range of 9-27.5 nm. The antibacterial activities and acting mechanism of AgNPs were studied with respect to Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by measuring the growth curves, protein and reducing sugar leakage, respiratory chain dehydrogenase activity, as well as the formation of bactericidal reactive oxygen species (ROS). The experimental results indicated that 50 mg/ml AgNPs could completely inhibit the growth of bacterial cells and destroy the permeability of bacterial membranes and depress the activity of some membranous enzymes, which cause bacteria to die eventually. These nontoxic nanomaterials, which can be prepared in a simple and cost-effective manner, may be suitable for the formulation of new types of bactericidal materials.

Abstract:The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the emergence of multidrug-resistant and the slow advent of novel and more potent antitumor and antimicrobial chemotherapeutics continue to be of the highest concern for human health. Additionally, the stability, low solubility, and negative effects of existing drugs make them ineffective. Studies into alternative tactics to tackle such tenacious diseases was sparked by anticancer and antibacterial. Silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) were created from Trichoderma saturnisporum , the much more productive fungal strain. Functional fungal extracellular enzymes and proteins carried out the activities of synthesis and capping of the generated nano-metals. Characterization was done on the obtained Ag-NPs and Au-NPs through UV–vis, FTIR, XRD, TEM, and SEM. Additionally, versus methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Klebsiella pneumoniae , the antibacterial activities of Ag-NPs and Au-NPs were assessed. In particular, the Ag-NPs were more effective against pathogenic bacteria than Au-NPs. Furthermore, antibiofilm study that shown Au-NPs had activity more than Ag-NPs. Interestingly, applying the DPPH procedure, these noble metallic NPs had antioxidant activity, in which the IC 50 for Ag-NPs and Au-NPs was 73.5 μg/mL and 190.0 μg/mL, respectively. According to the cytotoxicity evaluation results, the alteration in the cells was shown as loss of their typical shape, partial or complete loss of monolayer, granulation, shrinking, or cell rounding with IC 50 for normal Vero cell were 693.68 μg/mL and 661.24 μg/mL, for Ag-NPs and Au-NPs, respectively. While IC 50 for cancer cell (Mcf7) was 370.56 μg/mL and 394.79 μg/mL for Ag-NPs and Au-NPs, respectively. Ag-NPs and Au-NPs produced via green synthesis have the potential to be employed in the medical industry as beneficial nanocompounds.

The present study aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of silver (Ag) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles alone and in combination with antibiotics against reference strains of pathogenic microorganisms as Staphylococcus aureus ( Staph. aureus ), Salmonella enterica subsp. Bukuru, Escherichia coli ( E.coli ) and Candida albicans ( C. albicans ). Methods: The antimicrobial effect of metal-nanoparticles (AgNPs and ZnONPS) and in combination with antibiotics was studied using the normal disc-diffusion method. Results: Both AgNPs and ZnONPs had increased antibacterial activity with an increase in their concentration against Gram-positive bacterium ( Staph. aureus ), Gram-negative bacteria ( E. coli and Salmonella spp) and no effect on C. albicans . The synergistic effect of antibiotics (azithromycin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, fosfomycin and chloramphenicol) against E. coli was significantly increased in the presence of AgNPs compared to antibiotic only. However, all antibiotics had a synergistic effect in the presence of AgNps against Salmonella spp. On the other hand, the antibacterial action of AgNPs with oxacillin and neomycin antibiotics against Staph. aureus was significantly decreased in comparison with antibiotics only. The synergistic effect of antibiotics (azithromycin, oxacillin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, fosfomycin and oxytetracycline) against E. coli was significantly increased in presence of ZnONPs compared to antibiotic only and also the synergistic effect of antibiotics (azithromycin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, fosfomycin, chloramphenicol and oxytetracycline) against Staph. aureus was significantly increased in the presence of ZnONPs compared to antibiotics only. On the other hand, most antibiotics had an antagonistic effect in presence of ZnONps against Salmonella spp. Conclusion: AgNPs and ZnONPs demonstrate a good synergistic effect with antibiotics and this may open the door for a future combination therapy against pathogenic bacteria. Abstract:The increase in bacterial infections and the emergence of antibiotic resistance has led to the development of bio-derived and environmentally friendly nanomaterials to counteract bacterial activity, and silver nanoparticles AgNPs are a promising way to achieve this. The present work aimed to synthesize AgNPs from the blue-green algae Athrospira Platensis and evaluate their antibacterial efficacy against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from human urinary tract infections. The results were shown and confirmed by peak UV spectra at 450. Through SEM and DLS analyses, the shapes of the AgNPs were determined to be spherical and with sizes ranging from 15 to 100 nm. The zeta potential values of AgNPs were found to be −20 ± 3.2 mV indicating the absence of AgNPs aggregates. Synthetic AgNPs produced by A. platensis showed a strong antibacterial effect against bacteria isolated from human urinary tract infections. The diameters of the inhibitory zone for S. aureus E. faecalis P. mirabilis and P. aeruginosa 14 mm, 16 mm, 15 mm, and 12 mm, respectively. AgNPs showed the highest activity against E. faecalis strain, with the diameter of the inhibitory zone reaching 16 ± 0.2 mm at a concentration of 800 μg/mL. These results will be a useful resource for studying the effects of man-made nanoparticles on the environmental safety and represent a promising step toward realizing AgNP-based antimicrobial drug production.

Remote estimation of phytoplankton size fractions using the spectral shape of light absorption.

Abstract:Phytoplankton size structure plays an important role in ocean biogeochemical processes. The light absorption spectra of phytoplankton provide a great potential for retrieving phytoplankton size structure because of the strong dependence on the packaging effect caused by phytoplankton cell size and on different pigment compositions related to phytoplankton taxonomy. In this study, we investigated the variability in light absorption spectra of phytoplankton in relation to the size structure. Based on this, a new approach was proposed for estimating phytoplankton size fractions. Our approach use the spectral shape of the normalized phytoplankton absorption coefficient (a(ph)(λ)) through principal component analysis (PCA). Values of a(ph)(λ) were normalized to remove biomass effects, and PCA was conducted to separate the spectral variance of normalized a(ph)(λ) into uncorrelated principal components (PCs). Spectral variations captured by the first four PC modes were used to build relationships with phytoplankton size fractions. The results showed that PCA had powerful ability to capture spectral variations in normalized a(ph)(λ), which were significantly related to phytoplankton size fractions. For both hyperspectral a(ph)(λ) and multiband a(ph)(λ), our approach is applicable. We evaluated our approach using wide in situ data collected from coastal waters and the global ocean, and the results demonstrated a good and robust performance in estimating phytoplankton size fractions in various regions. The model performance was further evaluated by a(ph)(λ) derived from in situ remote sensing reflectance (R(rs)(λ)) with a quasi-analytical algorithm. Using R(rs)(λ) only at six bands, accurate estimations of phytoplankton size fractions were obtained, with R(2) values of 0.85, 0.61, and 0.76, and root mean-square errors of 0.130, 0.126, and 0.112 for micro-, nano-, and picophytoplankton, respectively. Our approach provides practical basis for remote estimation of phytoplankton size structure using a(ph)(λ) derived from satellite observations or rapid field instrument measurements in the future.
Assessment of Bryophyllum pinnatum mediated Ag and ZnO nanoparticles as efficient antimicrobial and cytotoxic agent

Abstract:Bryophyllum pinnatum is used to cure infections worldwide. Although the flavonoids of this plant are well known, it is still unknown how much of the plant's Ag and ZnO nanoparticles are beneficial. In the current research work, silver and zinc oxide nanoparticles were prepared using Bryophyllum pinnatum extract. The synthesized particles were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, EDS, XRD and FTIR. Synthesized particles were subjected to evaluation of their bactericidal and antifungal activity at various doses. Uv vis spectra at 400 nm corresponding to AgNPs confirmed their synthesis. Strong peaks in the EDS spectra of Ag and ZnO indicate the purity of the sample. The scanning electron microscopic images of ZnONPs showed a size of about 60 nm ± 3 nm, which demonstrated the presence of triangular-shaped ZnO nanoparticles. Green synthesized nanoparticles showed bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive ( Micrococcus luteus , Staphylococcus aureus , Bacillus subtilis ) and Gram-negative ( Agrobacterium tumifaciens , Salmonella setubal , Enterobacter aerogenes ) strains. AgNPs proved to be more effective against Gram-negative bacterial strains compared to Gram-positive owing to MIC values (10 ppm and 20 ppm respectively). Whereas, ZnONPs were found more effective against Gram-positive bacteria with lower MIC values (10 ppm) as compared to Gram-negative ones (20 ppm). Also, the synthesized nanoparticles exhibited moderate dose-dependent antifungal activity against tested fungal strains ranging from 10 to 70%. Cytotoxicity of nanoparticles was found significant using Brine shrimp's lethality assay with IC 50 values of 4.09 ppm for AgNPs, 13.72 ppm for ZnONPs, and 24.83 ppm for plant extract. Conclusively, Ag and ZnO nanoparticles were more effective than plant extract and AgNPs had higher activities than those of ZnONPs. Further research is warranted to explore the precise mechanism of action and the potential applications of these nanoparticles in the medical field.

Antibacterial Synergy: Assessing the Impact of Nano Zirconium Oxide Particles in Combination with Selected Antibiotics on Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolates from Urinary Tract Infections

Abstract:Research for novel compounds that may block bacterial development has continued and prompted by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The expenses of community for health care as a result of antibiotic resistance has indeed been remarkable during the last decades and demand immediate of medical attention. Consequently, this research presents the antibacterial effect of genuine metal oxide nanoparticles against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Klebsiella pneumoniae that have been isolated from urinary tract infection patients. This is because metal oxide nanomaterials have already been utilised a compromise with some of its comprehensive implementations throughout the pharmaceutical and biological disciplines of nano-biotechnology. The biological activity of zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ) nanoparticles against bacteria is investigated using agar well diffusion approach. The antibacterial efficiency of nanoparticles on E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae using both qualitative and quantitative assessment approaches is appraised. Specifically, an aseptic technique is used to collect fifty urine samples into sterile tubes. To inoculate the patients' midstream urine on both blood agar and MacConkey agar plates, the direct streaking approach is employed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X–Ray diffraction (XRD) techniques are used to signify the physical features nanoparticle including shape and size. The identified cubic components of SEM and XRD techniques indicate the existence of ZrO 2 nanoparticles and magnetic nanoparticles of particle size ranges between 5 to 50 nm. According to the data, ZrO 2 nanoparticles have a bacteriostatic effect at 0.1 mg/ml with an absorption of 0.2 and a bactericidal effect at 2 mg/ml with an absorption of 0.007 on E. col isolates. Additionally, ZrO 2 nanoparticles exhibit bacteriostatic (at 0.1 mg/ml with absorption of 0.3) and bactericidal (at 2 mg/ml with absorption of 0.001) effects on Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. Among all the antibiotics utilised, gentamicin shows the lowest rate of resistance, suggesting that it is more effective against E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae when ZrO 2 is presented.

Abstract:Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have been widely used in biomedical applications due to their high biocompatibility and low toxicity to humans. The present work aimed to investigate the antibacterial effects of different concentrations of ZnO NPs on two opportunistic pathogens, Serratia marcescens and Enterococcus faecalis . The surface interaction between nanoparticles and bacterial cell wall, and the subsequent morphological alterations on the bacterial surface, were examined through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. The energy dispersive X-ray analysis was used to confirm the elemental composition of ZnO NPs and the cellular accumulation of ZnO NPs in bacteria. The growth-inhibitory test demonstrated a dose-dependent growth inhibitory effect of ZnO NPs against both the test bacteria, as the higher concentration of nanoparticles caused the higher bacterial growth inhibition. The results showed that ZnO NPs caused a higher growth inhibition (63.50 ± 2.50%) on the Gram-positive bacterium E . faecalis compared to the Gram-negative bacterium S. marcescens (51.27 ± 4.56%). Fourier transform infrared spectrum revealed the possible involvement of hydroxyl, carboxyl, amides, methylene, and phosphate groups from the biomolecules of bacterial cell wall such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and phospholipids in the interaction of ZnO NPs on bacterial cell surface. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis showed the higher accumulation of ZnO NPs in E. faecalis than S. marcescens analogous to the bacterial growth inhibition. Scanning electron microscopy images confirmed the antibacterial properties of ZnO NPs, showing the loss of integrity of cell membrane and distortion of bacterial cells. Hence, the potential of ZnO NP as an antibacterial agent against S. marcescens and E. faecalis has been confirmed.

Abstract:Ponderal and linear growth of children has been widely studied; however, epidemiologic evidence of a relationship between the two is inconsistent. Child undernutrition in the form of low height for age and low weight for height continues to burden the developing world. A downward shift in the distribution of height for age in the first 2 y of life is commonly observed in many developing countries and is usually summarized as the percentage stunted (height for age Z-score <-2). Similar shifts are seen in weight for height; however, weight-for-height shifts are often less extreme, perhaps because weight for height is more tightly biologically controlled. Low height for age and low weight for height in childhood share some common factors, including food insecurity, infectious diseases, and inappropriate feeding practices. Reductions in weight for height, generally seen as a short-term response to inadequate dietary intake or utilization, are thought to precede decreases in height for age; however, given an adequate diet and no further insults, catch-up linear growth can occur. Serial instances of decreased weight for height, however, are thought to limit the degree of catch-up growth attained, contributing to linear growth retardation. Additional research is needed to identify the factors associated with recovery of linear growth after a child experiences decreased weight for height. Although the direct relationship between weight for height and height for age is likely limited, each of these measurements indicates important information about the general health of children and their risk of the development of illness or dying; therefore, eliminating the downward shift of height for age and weight for height in developing countries should be prioritized as a public policy.
Antibacterial Assessment of Zinc Sulfide Nanoparticles against Streptococcus pyogenes and Acinetobacter baumannii

Abstract:Background: Due to the appearance of resistant bacterial strains against the antimicrobial drugs and the reduced efficiency of these valuable resources, the health of a community and the economies of countries have been threatened. Objective: In this study, the antibacterial assessment of zinc sulfide nanoparticles (ZnS NPs) against Streptococcus pyogenes and Acinetobacter baumannii has been performed. Methods: ZnS NPs were synthesized through a co-precipitation method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG-4000). The size and morphology of the synthesized ZnS NPs were determined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and it was found that the average size of the applied NPs was about 70 nm. In order to evaluate the antibacterial effect of the synthesized ZnS NPs, various concentrations (50μg/mL, 100 μg/mL and 150 μg/mL) of ZnS NPs were prepared. Antibacterial assessments were performed through the disc diffusion method in Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) culture medium and also the optical density (OD) method was performed by a UV-Vis spectrophotometer in Trypticase™ Soy Broth (TSB) medium. Then, in order to compare the antibacterial effects of the applied NPs, several commercial antibiotics including penicillin, amikacin, ceftazidime and primaxin were used. Results: The achieved results indicated that the antibacterial effects of ZnS NPs had a direct relation along with the concentrations and the concentration of 150 μg/mL showed the highest antibacterial effect in comparison with others. In addition, the ZnS NPs were more effective on Acinetobacter baumannii. Conclusion: The findings of this research suggest a novel approach against antibiotic resistance.

Abstract:Background: The increase in nosocomial multidrug resistance and biofilm-forming bacterial infections led to the search for new alternative antimicrobial strategies other than traditional antibiotics. Silver nanoparticles [AgNP] could be a viable treatment due to their wide range of functions, rapid lethality, and minimal resistance potential. The primary aim of this study is to prepare silver nanoparticles and explore their antibacterial activity against biofilms. background: The number of deaths and diseases is expected to increase significantly due to nosocomial multidrug resistance and biofilm-forming bacterial infections. The World Health Organization supports researchers in identifying an alternative antimicrobial that works differently than traditional antibiotics. Silver nanoparticles could be a viable treatment because of their broad spectrum of activity, fast killing power, and low resistance value. Methods: AgNPs with specific physicochemical properties such as size, shape, and surface chemistry were prepared using a chemical reduction technique, and then characterized by DLS, SEM, and FTIR. The activity of AgNPs was tested alone and in combination with some antibiotics against MDR Gram-negative and Gram-positive planktonic bacterial cells and their biofilms. Finally, mammalian cell cytotoxicity and hemolytic activity were tested using VERO and human erythrocytes. Results: The findings of this study illustrate the success of the chemical reduction method in preparing AgNPs. Results showed that AgNPs have MIC values against planktonic organisms ranging from 0.0625 to 0.125 mg/mL, with the greatest potency against gram-negative bacteria. It also effectively destroyed biofilm-forming cells, with minimal biofilm eradication concentrations [MBEC] ranging from 0.125 to 0.25 mg/ml. AgNPs also had lower toxicity profiles for the MTT test when compared to hemolysis to erythrocytes. Synergistic effect was found between AgNPs and certain antibiotics, where the MIC was dramatically reduced, down to less than 0.00195 mg/ml in some cases. Conclusion: The present findings encourage the development of alternative therapies with high efficacy and low toxicity.

Antibacterial size effect of ZnO nanoparticles and their role as additives in emulsion waterborne paint

Abstract:Nosocomial infections (NIs) are prevalent in intensive care units due to antibiotic overuse. Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), like ZnO, offer potential solutions, yet understanding how NPs size impacts their antibacterial efficacy are lacking. This study focuses on the effect of nanoparticle size on kinetics of bacterial strains growth. NPs were synthesized using a sol-gel process with monoethanolamine (MEA) and water, characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy, confirming crystallization and size variations. ZnO NPs with mean size of 22, 35 and 66 nm were used against the most common nosocomial bacteria strains Escherichia coli (Gram-negative), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram-negative), and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive). The evaluation of NPs minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and bactericidal concentration (MBC) revealed superior antibacterial activity in smaller NPs. The bacterial population was monitored via optical absorbance, showing reduced specific growth rate, prolonged latency period, and increased inhibition percentage with smaller NPs, indicating a substantial deceleration in the growth of microorganisms. Pseudomonas aeruginosa exhibited the smallest sensitivity to ZnO NPs, attributed to its environmental stress resistance. Furthermore, the antibacterial efficacy of paint containing 1 wt% of 22 nm ZnO NPs was assessed and displayed activity against E. coli and S. aureus.

Abstract:Brucellosis is an endemic zoonotic disease caused by Brucella species, which are intramacrophage pathogens that make treating this disease challenging. The negative effects of the treatment regime have prompted the development of new antimicrobials against brucellosis. A new treatment modality for antibiotic-resistant microorganisms is the use of nanoparticles (NPs). In this study, we examined the antibacterial activities of silver and gold NPs (SNPs and GNPs, respectively), the resistance developed by Brucella melitensis ( B . melitensis ) and Brucella abortus ( B . abortus ) strains and the toxicity of both of these NPs in experimental rats. To test the bactericidal effects of the SNPs and GNPs, we used 22 multidrug-resistant Brucella isolates (10 B . melitensis and 12 B . abortus ). The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of both types of NPs were determined utilizing the microdilution technique. To test the stability of resistance, 7 B . melitensis and 6 B . abortus isolates were passaged ten times in culture with subinhibitory concentrations of NPs and another ten times without NPs. Histopathological analysis was completed after rats were given 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/kg NPs orally for 28 consecutive days. The MIC values (μg/ml) of the 10-nm SNPs and 20-nm GNPs against B . melitensis were 22.43 ± 2.32 and 13.56 ± 1.22, while these values were 18.77 ± 1.33 and 12.45 ± 1.59 for B . abortus , respectively. After extensive in vitro exposure, most strains showed no resistance to the 10-nm SNPs or 20-nm GNPs. The NPs and antibiotics did not cross-react in any of the evolved Brucella strains. SNPs and GNPs at doses below 2 mg/kg were not harmful to rat tissue according to organ histopathological examinations. However, a greater dose of NPs (2 mg/kg) harmed all of the tissues studied. The bactericidal properties of NPs are demonstrated in this work. Brucella strains develop similar resistance to SNPs and GNPs, and at low dosages, neither SNPs nor GNPs were hazardous to rats.

Antimicrobial Potential and Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized from Ocimum Sanctum Extract

Abstract:The growing resistance of microbes to conventional antibiotics and the environmental impact of chemical synthesis methods highlight the urgent need for effective and sustainable antimicrobial agents. In this study, we address these challenges by synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using leaf extract, a green and efficient method. We confirmed AgNPs synthesis through UV-vis spectroscopy, observing a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) peak centered at 420 nm. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis showed intense peaks at 37.81°, 45.01°, 63.91°, and 78.0°, corresponding to Bragg's reflections at 111, 200, 220, and 311, respectively, with an average particle size of approximately 18 nm calculated using Scherrer's formula. The reduction of Ag ions was monitored using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), which revealed a rapid decrease from 2.73 ppm to 0.023 ppm within four minutes, driven by the active reducing agents in the extract. The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image confirmed the spherical shape of the AgNPs, with an average size of 23.82 ± 4.17 nm. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy identified absorption peaks at 1635 cm and 3430 cm , associated with the amide I bond of proteins and OH stretching in alcohols and phenolic compounds, respectively. The synthesized AgNPs exhibited significant antimicrobial activity, demonstrated by a dose-dependent inhibitory effect against bacterial strains. The inhibition zone measured 6 mm at the lowest concentration of 5 μg/L and increased progressively to 14 mm at the highest concentration of 25 μg/L, indicating strong antimicrobial potential even at low dosages.

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), caused by microbial infections, has become a major contributor to morbid rates of mortality worldwide and a serious threat to public health. The exponential increase in resistant pathogen strains including Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) poses significant hurdles in the health sector due to their greater resistance to traditional treatments and medicines. Efforts to tackle infectious diseases caused by resistant microbes have prompted the development of novel antibacterial agents. Herein, we present selenium and copper oxide monometallic nanoparticles (Se-MMNPs and CuO-MMNPs), characterized using various techniques and evaluated for their antibacterial potential via disc diffusion, determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), antibiofilm, and killing kinetic action. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques confirmed the size-distribution, spherical-shape, stability, elemental composition, and structural aspects of the synthesized nanoparticles. The MIC values of Se-MMNPs and CuO-MMNPs against S. aureus and E. coli were determined to be 125 μg/mL and 100 μg/mL, respectively. Time–kill kinetics studies revealed that CuO-MMNPs efficiently mitigate the growth of S. aureus and E. coli within 3 and 3.5 h while Se-MMNPs took 4 and 5 h, respectively. Moreover, CuO-MMNPs demonstrated better inhibition compared to Se-MMNPs. Overall, the proposed materials exhibited promising antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli pathogens.

Abstract:Recently, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles have garnered significant scientific interest due to their distinctive properties and promising applications across diverse fields. This study details the successful synthesis and characterization of Fe 3 O 4 , Ag, and magnetite/silver core-shell (Fe 3 O 4 /Ag) nanocomposites, prepared through chemical reduction and co-precipitation methods. The successful incorporation of Ag into Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Physical characterization revealed that the synthesized nanoparticles were small in size and highly pure. Their optical and electrical properties, including bandgap and electrical conductivity, were also characterized. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized Fe 3 O 4 , Ag, and Fe 3 O 4 /Ag nanoparticles was evaluated using Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) against pathogenic bacterial strains: S. typhimurium , P. aeruginosa , and S. aureus . The results demonstrated that Ag, Fe 3 O 4, and Fe 3 O 4 /Ag nanoparticles could inhibit high concentrations of bacteria, indicating an excellent antimicrobial effect. Furthermore, the Fe 3 O 4 /Ag nanoparticles were found to be more effective than both Fe 3 O 4 and Ag nanoparticles in inhibiting the selected pathogenic bacteria strains: S. typhimurium , P. aeruginosa , and S. aureus.
