Abstract:The effect of high temperature on the mechanical performance of granite is a key problem in many underground projects such as dry-hot rock mining and high-level radioactive nuclear waste disposal. In view of this, a coupled thermal–mechanical numerical model of granite is established in the present study by combining CT reconstruction technology with the discrete element GBM method. The study reproduces the real microstructure of two-dimensional scan slices of granite and considers the non-uniform heat transfer characteristics of diagenetic minerals. The numerical model can effectively depict the propagation law of microcracks between different minerals, between the same mineral, and within the same minerals after heating. The proposed model successfully simulates the strength characteristics, deformation behavior, and failure mode of granite after thermal treatment at different temperatures, thus proving the applicability of the modeling method in the study of thermal–mechanical modeling of granite. The simulation results show that granite suffers heat damage mostly in the form of tensile cracks at all the target temperatures of thermal treatment. With the increase in the temperature, the axial stress threshold of micro-cracks in granite under uniaxial load gradually decreases, and the overall fracture degree of the specimen increases. The stress–strain curve shows a post-peak decreasing trend of brittleness and an increasing trend of ductility. When the heating temperature exceeds 450°C, thermal damage begins to dominate the final failure mode of granite. The findings of the study can provide valuable theoretical support for geotechnical engineering involving the thermodynamic properties of rocks. They can further provide a reference for numerical simulation methods for accurate characterization of the microstructure of rock.

Abstract:Temperature has a significant impact on the microscopic damage and macroscopic mechanical properties of brittle heterogeneous rocks. The grain-based model and grain-growth method were used to reconstruct Beishan granite (BsG) based on the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM). In addition, a uniaxial loading simulation method for a preheated model was proposed to study the effect of temperature on the thermal cracking and mechanical behavior of BsG. This study found that the crack inclination angle and spatial distribution characteristics of samples have significant temperature dependence. The inter-grain crack aperture is closely related to the nonlinear thermal expansion coefficient and thermal mismatch of minerals. The amount of thermal energy absorbed by mineral crystals is mainly related to the specific heat capacity of the mineral, which is ultimately converted into strain energy and kinetic energy. The transfer of thermal energy causes the thermal vibration effect. The higher the temperature is, the larger the tensile stress and compressive stress. The location of the maximum tensile stress is generally at grain boundaries. As the temperature increases, the peak strength and elastic modulus of BsG decrease, and the ductility increases. The cracks induced by thermal stress become the main defect location of the sample, and the phenomenon of splitting failure appears macroscopically. The inclination angle of shear cracks does not change much with temperature, and the orientation distribution of the tension cracks becomes more isotropic as the temperature increases. The research results have guiding significance for stability evaluation in energy geotechnical engineering.

Abstract:Given the major impact of thermal treatment on the deformation and failure characteristics of rocks in deep rock engineering, it is crucial to understand the relevant behaviors of rocks with the temperature effect being taken into account. For this purpose, the deformation of rocks after exposure to high temperature is divided into void and skeleton portions based on the deformation analysis of rock mechanics. Then, a constitutive statistical model for rocks is established by assuming that the probability density function of the stress level of rock mesoscopic elements is consistent with normal random distribution, and the thermal damage variable is introduced. The theoretical results of the thermal damage deformation model based on characteristics of the void compaction stage are well in line with experimental data from conventional compression tests of Nanan granite after high temperature. Optical microscopy shows that the obvious void compaction stage is related to the propagation and development of original and initiated microcracks. Compared to the classic damage model, the improved model better captures the void compaction stage of the strain–stress curves of granite after high temperature. The extreme value method was used to determine the normal statistical distribution parameters based on conventional rock mechanical tests. This theoretical model is therefore convenient in engineering applications involving high-temperature effects.

Abstract:On the basis of Lemaitre's strain equivalence theory, the effects of high temperatures on the mechanical parameters of rock are taken into account, and a thermal damage variable DT is introduced. A statistical thermal damage constitutive model is developed by adopting the modified Mohr-Coulomb criterion with the hypothesis that the mesoscopic unit strength of rock subjected to thermal treatment obeys a Weibull random distribution. The values of the model parameters are determined by the extreme value method according to the concept of yielding. The rationality of the model is verified by comparing the calculated results with experimental results from uniaxial and conventional triaxial experiments of granite, marble, and sandstone specimens that were subjected to different high-temperature treatments. The results indicate that the model can simulate the whole process of stress-strain relations of different lithological rocks under different confined pressure and temperature conditions; the model can also reflect the characteristics of strain softening. The model does not contain any unconventional rock mechanics parameters and is lithology independent, which is highly convenient for engineering applications. This research can provide a theoretical basis for the development and protection of high-temperature rock projects.

Abstract:Geothermal resource (hot dry rock, HDR) has great potential for exploiting, the successful exploitation of HDR resource largely depends on the drilling process. Rock in high temperature environment has quite different mechanical properties from room temperature, which seriously affects the drilling process. In present study, a statistical damage constitutive model of granite at high-temperature, which considering the damage threshold, residual stress and thermal damage, is established to describe the stress–strain relationship of high-temperature granite. In this model, the Drucker–Prager criterion is used as the failure criterion and the Weibull distribution is introduced to describe the strength distribution of rock elements. The results of theoretical analysis are found agree closely with the triaxial compression experiment of high temperature granite. The influences of model parameters of m, n and temperature on rock damage evolution are analyzed. A method for evaluating rock ductile–brittle based on damage evolution is proposed. The results show that the brittleness of rock decreases with increasing the temperature, increases with increasing the parameter of m, and decreases with increasing the parameter of n. This study leads to an enhanced understanding of high-temperature rock mechanics, and provides the basis to improve the HDR resource drilling efficiency.

Abstract:The tensile microcracking behavior of granites, significantly influenced by temperature, is crucial in high temperature geological and engineering applications such as geothermal energy system and nuclear waste disposal. This study investigates the impact of grain size and mineralogical composition on the mechanical properties and microcracking behavior of pre-heated granites and underlying mechanisms through a comprehensive comparative analysis. Utilizing three-point semi-circular bending tests, three distinct granite types differing in grain size and mineralogical composition were subjected to varying temperature treatments ranging from 25 °C to 1000 °C. Detailed thin-section analyses were conducted to examine the morphologies of post-failure specimens, elucidating the underlying mechanisms governing microcracking behavior. Results indicate that granites with larger average grain sizes and heterogeneous grain size distributions exhibit heightened sensitivity to thermal treatment, manifesting in increased thermal crack density. Fracture surface topographies vary with mineralogical composition and treatment temperature, with distinct patterns such as conchoidal fracture and lamellar tearing crack observed at different temperature ranges. Grain size and mineralogical composition significantly influence load–displacement curves and mode I fracture toughness, with a notable brittle-ductile transition observed in coarse-grained granites between 400 °C and 600 °C. Fracture toughness decreases with increasing temperature and grain size. Furthermore, grain size impacts the tortuosity of fracture paths under mode I loading, particularly pronounced in coarse- and medium-grained granites. In medium-grained granites, the tortuosity and width of fracture paths increase with treatment temperature, whereas the effect of temperature on the tortuosity of fracture paths in fine-grained granites is negligible.
A Micromechanical-Based Failure Criterion for Rocks after High-Temperature Treatment

Abstract:The strength properties of rocks after high-temperature treatment are substantially impacted by thermally-induced cracks. In this work, a new parameter of temperature-dependent initial damage or crack density is proposed and a micromechanical-based failure criterion incorporating it is developed to characterize the strength properties of rocks after high-temperature treatment under compressive loading. The mathematical expression of the suggested nonlinear failure criterion coincides with the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for intact rocks. The micromechanical-based failure criterion is then verified using the experimental results of five sets of rocks (Macheng granite, Tournemire shale, red sandstone, coarse marble and veined marble) after hightemperature treatment. The results shown that the strength properties of rocks after hightemperature treatment can be well captured using the failure criterion incorporating temperature-dependent initial damage. Three evaluation indicators (root mean square error, correlation coefficient and mean absolute error) are indicated that the failure criterion incorporating temperature-dependent initial damage has a strong predictive capability. The parameter of temperature-dependent initial damage provides a great description of the effect of thermallyinduced damage on the strength evolution of rocks after high-temperature treatment. The proposed failure criterion in this work will become an effective alternative for predicting the nonlinear strength evolution of pre-heated rocks under compressive loading due to its high reliability and easy-to-use.
Coupled Thermo–Mechanical Damage Evolution of Granite under Repeated Heating–Cooling Cycles and the Applications of Mohr–Coulomb and Drucker–Prager Models

Abstract:Geothermal energy and nuclear waste storage are closely related to typical crystalline rock, granite. Therefore, understanding the thermo–mechanical properties of granite under heating–cooling treatment is critical to deep geological repository and risk assessment. This study presents experimental results with several granite groups under repeated and single heating–cooling cycles up to 1000 °C to study the thermo–mechanical properties of the granite. Young's modulus and P-wave velocity were used to determine the thermal damage. According to the Weibull statistical distribution function, the resultant thermal damage models were correlated with mechanical damage regarding the Drucker–Prager (DP) and Mohr–Coulomb (MC) failure criteria. Compared with single heating–cooling cycles, the thermo–mechanical properties, peak strain, peak stress, friction angle, cohesion strength, Young's modulus, bulk density, and P-wave velocity present small changes because of the Kaiser effect (thermal memory). The study shows that the proposed coupled thermo–mechanical damage provides a more accurate description of temperature-induced variations than the conventional thermal and mechanical damage methods. The resulting mechanical damage is more extensive than the thermal damage at low temperatures which, however, dominates beyond the critical temperature of 400 °C. The coupled thermo–mechanical damage simulated by the P-wave velocity as a power trend with temperature becomes more accurate than Young's modulus as an exponential trend with temperature. The coupled thermal-mechanical calculated by MC failure criterion is much better than the DP failure criterion.

Analysis of physical and mechanical behaviors and microscopic mineral characteristics of thermally damaged granite

Abstract:Temperature's influence on the physical and mechanical properties of rocks is a crucial concern for the rational design of deep rock engineering structures and the assurance of their long-term stability. To systematically comprehend the impact of the evolution of mineral composition and micro characteristics on the physical and mechanical behavior of thermally damaged granite, we observed the microscopic structural defects inside the rocks with a polarizing microscope and revealed the thermal damage mechanism of granite from a microscopic perspective by combining ultrasound detection and XRD phase characteristic analysis. The results show that the physical properties of the specimens changed significantly at three characteristic temperature points: 400 °C, 800 °C, and 1000 °C. Under high temperature conditions, the diffraction intensity of all minerals in granite, except for quartz, generally decreased, and stable minerals decomposed. Albite and potash feldspar decomposed to form anorthoclase, thereby reducing the structural stability of the rock material. In addition, the peak width of various minerals decreased to varying degrees with increasing temperature. The increase in mineral volume further damaged the internal structure of the rock material while promoting the transformation from grain boundary to intergranular cracks and from intragranular cracks to transgranular cracks, ultimately forming a interconnected crack network. Thermal damage significantly reduced the longitudinal wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, and elastic modulus of the specimens, while the stress-strain curve relationship indicated that the specimens underwent two opposite processes of transformation from brittleness to ductility and then from ductility to brittleness. The thermal damage threshold of granite in this study was 600 °C.

Abstract:High temperature is an important factor affecting the mechanical properties and crack propagation behavior of granite. In this study, the mechanical properties and thermal damage mechanism of granite after high temperature are studied experimentally. Subsequently, based on the content and distribution of granite minerals, combined with computed tomography (CT) technique and grain-based model (GBM) modeling method, a novel discrete element numerical model considering real mineral distribution is introduced, and the rationality of the method is verified by experiments. On this basis, the mechanical behavior, crack propagation behavior and failure mode of granite after high temperature are studied. The results show that 450 °C is the thermal damage threshold of granite in this study. When T ≤ 450 °C, the development of thermally-induced microcracks is not significant, the P-wave velocity of granite decreases slightly, and the change of mechanical properties is not obvious. When T > 450 °C, the thermally-induced microcrack propagates rapidly, the fracture network and fracture zone are formed locally in the specimen, and the P-wave velocity and mechanical properties of granite deteriorate significantly. The simulation results show that the number of thermally-induced microcracks in granite specimens is positively correlated with temperature, and the tensile cracks are mainly at the mineral boundary, and the thermal stress concentration between mineral particles is the main cause of thermally-induced microcracks. After temperature treatment, there are mainly tensile cracks in granite specimens under uniaxial compression, and the orientation of tensile cracks tends to be isotropic with the increase of temperature. When T < 600 °C, the crack distribution and failure mode of granite specimens under uniaxial compression are consistent with those at room temperature. When T ≥ 600 °C, thermally-induced microcracks begin to dominate the uniaxial compression failure process, and granite specimens begin to show ductile failure characteristics, and the brittle-plastic transition was observed between 600 °C and 750 °C.

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of the mechanical behavior of thermally damaged rock is crucial for the design, prediction, and stability control of rock engineering. However, the strength and fracture characteristics of rock containing pre‐existing flaws have not been studied systematically. Therefore, in this study, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on preholed granite specimens using MTS816 rock mechanics testing and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring systems. The mechanical properties, AE characteristics, and failure patterns of thermally damaged granite specimens were analyzed, and the alteration of the mechanical behavior was explained by the P‐wave velocity, effective porosity, mineral components, and thermal cracking. The results show that the peak strength and elastic modulus of preholed granite specimens first increased and then decreased with the increasingly high temperature. Cracks were always initiated from the left and right perimeters of the pre‐existing hole, and the crack coalescence modes between the two pre‐existing holes were independent of the high temperature. After 150°C treatment, thermal cracks were observed, and the complexity and interconnectivity of the fracture surface increased with temperature. The variations of the mineral component and crystal structure induced by increasing the high temperature contributed to the thermal damage of the granite. The experimental results are expected to enhance the understanding of the macromechanical and mesomechanical behaviors of rock with respect to high temperature.

Abstract:In deep energy development, the irreversible damage caused by thermal stress at high temperatures significantly affects the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Therefore, an in-depth investigation of the damage characteristics of rocks under thermal shock is important for the efficient and safe utilization of resources. In this study, the mechanical characteristics and microcracking of granite subjected to a thermal shock were experimentally investigated. Subsequently, a novel thermo-mechanical grain-based model (TM-GBM) reflecting the actual mineral distribution was established through the combination of digital image processing and heat conduction theory. Using the TM-GBM, we studied the multiscale damage of granite during heating, cooling, and uniaxial loading for the first time. The results showed that 300 °C can be considered the critical temperature for the thermal shock damage of granite. During the heating and cooling processes, thermally induced cracks are positively correlated with temperature, and intragranular cracks in quartz are significantly more numerous than those in the other minerals. At the same thermal shock temperature, the magnitude of the thermally induced stress and number of thermally induced cracks during the heating process are significantly lower than during the cooling process. Under uniaxial compression, granite failure is primarily characterized by intergranular cracking. The numerical simulation results of this study aligned closely with the experimental findings, demonstrating that this method can be used to conduct research under conditions that are unattainable through experimental means. This paper also provides significant theoretical support for thermal energy-storage technology and the stability analysis of high-temperature rock masses.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical modeling method that integrates a grain-growth model and Voronoi polygon configuration to investigate the thermal damage characteristics and fracture mechanism of granite under three distinct thermal conditions: rapid heating, slow heating, and cycle heating. The proposed method accurately simulates the intra-grain damage modes of mineral particles and the mechanical responses of granite. Through the simulation, it was observed that slow heating induces more significant deterioration compared to rapid heating, while cycle heating leads to wider crack openings and apparent brittle damage during the cooling phase. Furthermore, the peak strength and elastic modulus of granite demonstrate a significant decrease with increasing temperature under all three heating conditions. Notably, slow heating exhibits ductility characteristics in its post-peak residual strength. This study also analyzes the effects of different thermal conditions on the damage evolution pattern and cracking mechanism of rocks. It is found that slow heating generates a higher number of cracks with a broader distribution and intra-grain damage, whereas cycle heating results in severe cracks and fractures. The findings of this study have practical implications for preventing and controlling thermal disasters in deep rock engineering.

Abstract:As the mileage of long tunnels and the number of underground engineering projects continue to increase, the issue of rock mass stability after fire and explosion becomes increasingly prominent. Therefore, studying high strain rates mechanical properties of rocks under different heat treatment methods is of great significance to the design of geological engineering. In this study, Caledonian granite of Sejila Mountain is selected as the research object. Impact compression tests are conducted after high-temperature natural cooling and real-time high-temperature treatment to analyze the mechanical properties and crushing energy consumption characteristics after exposure to 400 °C. The results show that the temperature threshold of Sejila Mountain granite is 800 °C. On average, the peak stress after natural cooling at 400 °C, 500 °C, 600 °C, and 700 °C decreases by 6.96%, 8.77%, 16.11%, and 31.51% compared to room temperature. Under real-time high-temperature, the peak stress decreases by 8.36%, 14.65%, 27.83%, and 46.55% on average compared to room temperature. The specimen fragments under real-time high-temperature are more rounded than those after natural cooling, and the fractal dimension is larger. The specific energy absorption (SEA) has a sudden change critical temperature, which is 500 °C for real-time high-temperature and 600 °C for natural cooling.

Abstract:This study concentrates on the dynamic damage analysis of high‐temperature rocks subjected to different thermal shocks. Then the specimens were grouped and heated to 200°C, 400°C, 600°C, and 800°C, then were cooled by natural, water, and liquid nitrogen cooling. Ultrasonic detector tests, the split Hopkinson pressure bar experiments, and scanning electron microscope tests of the high‐temperature granite specimens under different cooling methods were conducted. The change in mechanical properties of high‐temperature rock after cooling treatments is getting increasing attention. However, only a few studies have been conducted on the dynamic characteristic parameters. Therefore, this study aims to perform a dynamic damage analysis of high‐temperature rocks subjected to different thermal shocks. Accordingly, the specimens were grouped and heated to 200°C, 400°C, 600°C, and 800°C, and they were cooled by natural, water, and liquid nitrogen cooling. Ultrasonic detector tests, the split Hopkinson pressure bar experiments, and scanning electron microscope tests of the high‐temperature granite specimens were conducted using different cooling methods. Subsequently, the change rules of dynamic stress–strain curves and properties were calculated, and the morphology and micromorphology of fragments were compared. Based on the outcomes, the thermal shock damage and impact damage evolution were evaluated and quantified. The findings revealed that when the treatment temperature increases, the dynamic peak stress and elastic modulus decrease, while the peak strain increases, and the effect of rapid cooling was more significant in the influence of rock dynamic characteristics. Moreover, when the damage factor is more than 0.51, the change of dynamic stress‐strain is accelerated, leading to the instability of the structure under the impact load. The research results are expected to provide an adequate theoretical basis for the development and utilization of geothermal resources and underground engineering applications.

Abstract:Studying the high-temperature impact on microcracking behavior of granite is of great significance to geothermal energy extraction and deep engineering disaster prevention. Therefore, a thermo-mechanical coupled numerical model of granite is established based on computed tomography and grain-based model (CT-GBM) to investigate the impact of high temperature upon microcracking behavior of granite, and to further discuss the thermal damage mechanism. The results show that the thermal damage of granite mainly develops in the form of tensile failure. The development of intra grain cracks can be roughly divided into three periods featuring quiet (room temperature ∼ 300°C), stable development (300°C∼450°C) and unstable development (450°C∼600°C). The development of grain boundary cracks first appeared at the feldspar-quartz grain boundary, but the feldspar-feldspar grain boundary cracks prevail at high temperature (above 332°C) due to the large proportion of feldspar in granite. The phenomenon of stress concentration in granite under high temperature becomes growingly obvious with the increase of temperature, and such phenomenon is more obvious in grain boundaries than in mineral grains, which is the reason of microcracking and prevail of grain boundary cracks. In addition, the thermal damage degree of mineral grains and grain boundaries is described quantitatively through the self-defined crack coefficient. It is discovered that under the joint influence of thermal expansion characteristics and mechanical properties of minerals, the damage of grain boundaries between different minerals is more serious than that in identical minerals, and the damage of quartz grain is more serious than that of feldspar and mica.

Abstract:Rock mass engineering in a high-temperature environment is often affected by complex stress conditions. In this paper, to reveal the damage characteristics and fracture behaviors of granite after high temperature exposure under different strain rates, twenty-four uniaxial compression tests were carried out on granite specimens under the combined action of six temperatures (25 °C, 200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1000°C) and four quasi-static strain rates (1×10-5 s-1, 1×10-4 s-1, 1×10-3 s-1, and 1×10-2 s-1). The variations in the density, P-wave velocity, strength, deformation, elastic modulus, fractal fragmentation, acoustic emission characteristics, three-dimensional location, and thermal-force coupled damage characteristics were investigated. Through regression analysis and the corresponding formulae, the sensitivity of granite specimens to mechanical responses under different strain rates and temperatures was further discussed. The experimental results indicated that the mechanical responses of granite specimens are temperature and strain rate dependent. Under the influence of thermal-force coupling, the mechanical behaviors of granite specimens present substantial differences due to initial thermal damage and mechanical damage. Research results can provide the basis for stability evaluation and problem solving related to high-temperature rock engineering under complex stress environments.

Abstract:A split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) was used to characterize the high-strain rate behavior of saturated and frozen granite specimens. The effects of low temperatures and strain rates on dynamic mechanical response and failure behavior were investigated. The damage constitutive model of granite was established, considering both strain rate effect and low-temperature effect. The damage constitutive relationship took into account the statistical damage model based on Weibull distribution and nonlinear viscoelastic behavior. Results show that the dynamic compressive strength of the saturated and frozen granite at low temperatures (−20 °C to 15 °C) generally increases first and then decreases with the decrease of temperature. The peak strain decreases with the decrease of temperature and the peak strain at low temperatures (0 °C to −20 °C) decreases more than that at 15 °C. The dynamic Young's modulus of the samples shows an increasing trend from 0 °C to −20 °C, and the range of variation decreases with the decrease of temperature. At low temperature, the brittle characteristics of saturated granite are more pronounced due to water-ice phase change and cold shrinkage of the rock matrix, while the ductility is gradually reduced. The modeling results on the stress-strain relationships are consistent with experimental data. It is verified that the constitutive relationship can describe the high strain rate characteristics of saturated frozen granite.

Abstract:High temperature significantly influences the mechanical properties of granite, which is relevant to various engineering applications, including geothermal energy extraction. The objective of this study is to investigate the meso -mechanics of granite, specifically focusing on the formation of thermal cracks and the temperature-dependent mechanical properties in heterogeneous rock. Firstly, we heat the granite to 25–1000 °C by muffle furnace. Following this, we conduct triaxial compression tests with 0–20 MPa confining pressures on the heated-specimens cooled by cold water. Subsequently, we combine the grain-based model (GBM) and the finite-discrete element method (FDEM) to simulate the heat treatment process and the triaxial experiments. We calibrate the micromechanical parameters of granite by experimental results. Results show that the mechanism behind the formation of thermal cracks in granite subjected to high-temperature is the differential thermal expansion coefficients of mineral particles in granites, leading to the degradation of mechanical properties in thermal-treated granite. The temperature threshold for the formation of thermal cracks is between 500 °C and 550 °C. Particularly, the stress-strain curve of granite exhibits ideal elastic-plastic characteristics under temperature is 1000 °C. These results can help to demonstrate the temperature-dependent evolution of mechanical properties of crystalline rocks, providing a theoretical basis for the utilization of engineering applications.

Abstract:The dynamic compression experiments were conducted on granite specimens after high-temperature treatments by using split Hopkinson pressure bar test system. Subsequently, we collected the granite fragments after impacting, and the fragmentation characteristics were evaluated by the fractal dimension and average fragment size. Finally, combined with the numerical simulation results, we investigate the law of crack propagation during dynamic compression. The results show that the change in physical properties such as bulk density and mass of granite are closely related to the temperature. Microcracking occurred on the surface of granite when the temperature is 900℃. Dynamic peak strain and strain rate increased with the increase of temperature, while the peak strength and elastic modulus decreased. Additionally, the fractal dimension and average fragmentation size are closely related, and the relationship is negatively linear. The fractal dimension and average fragmentation size increase and decrease with the temperature, respectively. By combining the experimental and numerical results, we observed that the crack initially appears on the surface of the rock and then gradually propagates to the interior under impact loading. The rupture surface of granite fragmentation is approximately parallel to the axial direction and the ultimate failure mode mainly comprises the axial tensile splitting failure.
