Abstract:Functional materials with multiple optical properties have been investigated extensively in recent years because of their potential applications. Here we demonstrate a ladder polymer, [Zn-2(benzoate)(4)(An2Py)(2)] for its efficient light frequency up-conversion via multiphoton excitation at wavelengths ranging from 800 to 1500 nm. The zinc-based coordination polymer can-be self assembled, from zinc(II) nitrate, trans,trans-9,10-bis(4-pyridylethenyl) anthracene (An2Py), and benzoate ligands furnishing a one-dimensional ladder structure. The coordination polymer exhibits a high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 70%, a two photon-absorption cross section of 890 GM at 800 nm, and a three-photon-absorption cross section of 3.1 x 10(-78) cm(6) s(2) photon(-2) at 1200 nm. Furthermore, the coordination polymer in the form of nanoscale crystallites is capable of random lasing when pumped by 800 nm laser pulses with a threshold of 1.5 mJ/cm(2).

Abstract:Optical microcavities have been paid enormous attentions as a basic integrated element in photonic devices including micromodulators, microfilters, and microsensors. In particular, the microcavities that can produce unidirectional and single-mode lasing emissions are greatly demanded to meet the challenge of integrating high-efficiency and high-sensitivity optical functional systems. Herein, a three-dimensional polymer microlaser composed of stacked circular-ring-shaped and spiral-ring-shaped microcavities is fabricated directly on a narrow bandpass filter substrate by the femtosecond laser processing technique. The on-chip polymer microlaser provides a room-temperature, low-threshold, unidirectional, and single-mode laser output, resulting from the coupling between the two stacked microcavities. The fabrication of the on-chip low-threshold polymer microlaser opens up a possibility toward the integration of a variety of polymer microcavities for organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate fabrication of a spiral-shaped polymer microdisk cavity by femtosecond laser direct writing via two-photon polymerization of dye-doped resins. This spiral microresonator supports highly directional emission from the notch with a high-Q factor exceeding 1.6 x 10(3) and a low lasing threshold at room temperature. Our numerical simulation results reveal that clockwise propagating high-Q whispering gallery-like modes may couple to the counterclockwise modes and give the directional output. Benefiting from the low cost and good chemical compatibility of polymer materials, the fabrication of such spiral-shaped polymer microlasers with high-Q and unidirectional emission holds great potentials for use as elements of integrated organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Organic semiconducting emitters integrated with butterfly-mimetic photonic crystals (PhCs) are fascinating for dramatic advantages over light outcoupling efficiency and multifunctional strain sensors, as well as the key step toward electrically pumped lasers. Herein, an unprecedentedly direct mesoscale self-assembly into 1D PhCs is reported through a covalently gridization-driven approach of wide-bandgap conjugated polymers. A simple solvent-casting procedure allows for in situ self-assembly of the state-of-the-art conjugated nanopolymer, poly{[4-(octyloxy)-9,9-diphenylfluoren-2,7-diyl]grid}-co-{[5-(octyloxy)-9,9-diphenylfluoren-2,7-diyl]grid} (PODPFG), into well-defined multilayer architectures with an excellent toughness (30-40 J m-3 ). This ordered meso-architecture shows a typical Bragg-Snell diffraction behavior to testify the PhC nature, along with a high effective refractive index (1.80-1.88) and optical transmittance (85-87%). The PhC films also exhibit an angle-dependent blue/green photoluminescence switching, an electroluminescence efficiency enhancement by 150-250%, and an amplified spontaneous emission enhancement with ultralow waveguide loss coefficient (2.60 cm-1 ). Gridization of organic semiconductors offers promising opportunities for cross-scale morphology-directed molecular design in multifunctional organic mechatronics and intelligences.

Abstract:The supramolecular interaction network between light-emitting conjugated polymer (LCP) chains provides an excellent electronic landscape and optical cavity to stabilize the excited state and enhance emission efficiency for the fabrication of an organic laser. Herein, we originally demonstrated an exceptional deep-blue lasing from uniformly packed nanowires in a robust emissive spherulite of deep-blue LCPs with a flexible oligoether. The supramolecular interactions between flexible side-oligoethers enable polymer chains to self-assemble into crystalline nanowires and attach into a long-range ordered hierarchical structure. Intriguingly, this novel LCP spherulite exhibits an ultrastable and crystalline-enhanced emission, which is enhanced by about 42% over the emission efficiency of pristine spin-coated films. This robust deep-blue emission with an excellent spectral stability is mainly attributed to the suppression of physical defect formation and enhancement of exciton diffusion in these uniformly packed nanowires. More importantly, such a long-range ordered hierarchical structure also provided an excellent optical cavity to realize exciton population inversion for low-threshold (4.22 μJ/cm2) deep-blue lasing behavior. Abstract:Neat thin films of semiconducting polymers are attractive as efficient gain media toward optically pumped lasers. However, the optical loss and out-coupling of isotropic polymer thin films are far from being rationally regulated from the perspective of chain orientation and crystal form. Herein, we accomplished a simultaneous control of both chain orientation and crystal form in large-area highly ordered poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) thin films through epitaxial crystallization. The well-arranged PFO lamellae naturally shape a low-loss, graded-index waveguide to provide spatially distributed optical feedback. Moreover, much more horizontally oriented dipoles significantly enhance the light out-coupling efficiency. Thus, the only 65 nm-thickness oriented PFO films demonstrate excellent amplified spontaneous emission with a low excitation threshold (7.1 μJ/cm2) and a narrow full width at half-maximum (2.2 nm) measured in the perpendicular direction of PFO chains. This strategy opens an effective pathway to prepare high-performance polymer thin-film lasers and electrically pumped polymer lasers.

Abstract:As a new research hotspot in nano-materials and nano-structures, photoluminescence is widely used in medical imaging, biosensors, integrated devices and other fields because of its excellent optical performance and good stability. The design and fabrication of these nanostructures are expensive and complex, meanwhile, the influence of film structure change on lasing characteristics has not been systematically summarized. Thus, there are still challenges to realizing lasing regulation by using a multilayer film system. In this study, a dye-doped multilayer system was prepared by a convenient spin-coating method on polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) film. The effects of sandwich-like film and Au nanoparticles on the lasing characteristics were studied. The results show that the sandwich-like film can form a mirror symmetry plane and increase the photon scattering frequency. Furthermore, the band-gap edge effect can effectively improve the photon gain, enhancing the optical feedback and realizing band-edge lasing. The lasing intensity in the sandwich-like film is nearly 30% higher than that of the bilayer film system at the same pump energy. By adding Au nanoparticles as scatterers, the local electromagnetic field can be enhanced because of the surface plasmon resonance, improving the transition rate of dye molecules. Meanwhile, the photon scattering frequency among the scattering cross-section can also be increased, increasing the interaction between photons and dye. The lasing intensity can be enhanced by 160% at the same pump energy because of the interaction between the plasmon resonance effect and the scattering effect. The fabrication method in this study is convenient and easy to implement, which is conducive to improving the lasing intensity and provides an effective technical way for the realization of a modulated random laser.

Abstract:Electrically tunable random laser action has been demonstrated in a cavity-free structure. The scattering structure was shaped by the treatment of AC, and a polymer network structure is introduced to fix it. The fluorescence of the laser dye is scattered internally and selectively amplified at the band-edge of the photonic crystal, due to the concentrate of the photonic density of state. As the electric field increased, the deformation of the polymer network causes the cholesteric liquid crystal pitch to form a gradient distribution, resulting in the widening of the bandgap, and the random laser wavelength changes accordingly. This random laser with a broad tuning range (similar to 100 nm) opens new possibilities for the design of highly efficient incoherent light source in a large area with a thickness of micron level.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites have been considered as promising gain materials for lasing. Despite previous reports of lasing from nanocrystals, thin films and single crystals, the stability of perovskite lasers has been a challenge for its practical applications. Herein, a scalable strategy to prepare ultrastable perovskite@polymer hybrid fibers by employing a facile emulsion electrospinning approach is demonstrated. During the electrospinning process, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) first solidifies into an outer shell layer. Meanwhile, emulsion drops containing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and perovskite precursor are pushed inward and evolve into perovskite nanocrystals covered by PVDF. The PMMA with smooth surface benefits the light transport and the water‐resistant PVDF blocks the moisture. The methylammonium lead bromide perovskite‐embedded fibers can emit intensive light after storage in humid ambient environment (relative humidity >60%) or even in water. Amplified spontaneous emissions from the fibers network and waveguide lasing from chopped single fiber is demonstrated.

Abstract:Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) on various materials have been extensively investigated because of their wide applications. The combination of different materials allows for greater freedom in tailoring their functions and achieving responses not possible in a homogeneous material. By utilizing a femtosecond (fs) laser to irradiate the Fe-doped Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP) composite film, highly regular ultrafine nanogratings (U-nanogratings) with a period as small as 35.0 ($\pm$ 2.0) nm can be self-organized on the surface with extremely high efficiency. The period of the U-nanogratings can be controlled by varying the scanning speed of the laser beam (deposited energy) and the thickness of the composite film. Based on the experimental, theoretical, and simulation results, we propose a two-step formation mechanism: composite film excitation and two sequent grating-splitting. The high photosensitivity and low glass transition temperature of the composite film facilitate the fabrication of the ultrafine nanostructures. The proposed design method for the composite material and fabrication process could not only provide a strategy for obtaining highly regular U-nanogratings, but also offer a platform to explore the interaction physics between ultra-short pulses and matter under extreme conditions.
Stable Single‐Mode Lasing from a Hybrid Perovskite–Polymer Fiber

Abstract:An in situ growth strategy to directly construct perovskite nanolasers inside the long polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) fibers is explored. Schematic diagram of the hybrid perovskite−polymer fiber is shown here, as well as the photographs and spectra of a hybrid perovskite−polymer fiber under 800 nm fs‐laser excitation at room temperature. Nanowire lasers are potential light sources that can be used in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for inter‐chip optical communication. However, due to the size incompatibility between a nanoscale laser and a micrometer‐scale optical waveguide, their integration within a PIC remains challenging. Here, an in situ growth strategy to directly construct perovskite nanolasers inside the long polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) fibers is explored. As the perovskite nanolasers are embedded inside the PMMA fibers, effective coupling of lasing light to the PMMA fibers is expected. Furthermore, due to the protection of PMMA coating, the perovskite nanolasers exhibit high robustness in water and demonstrate significant improvement in photostability. Stable single‐mode and polarization operations are obtained at room temperature from the lasers with a low excitation threshold. Hence, these results pave the way to realize ultra‐stable perovskite‐based PICs suitable for inter‐chip optical communication.

Coherent Random Lasing from Dye Aggregates in Polydimethylsiloxane Thin Films

Abstract:The coherent random laser (CRL) from dye-doped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has been investigated in both nanoparticle-doped (NP-doped) thin films and pure dye thin films. Compared with the literature, the pump threshold is only 1.5 mJ/cm2 in the pure dye thin film with a low dye concentration. The spontaneously formed micro-/nanocrystals of Pyrromethene 597 (PM597) dye support both gain and random feedback in the bulk of the PDMS during the sample preparation. When the SiO2 NPs were doped, the pump threshold was reduced to 0.75 mJ/cm2. The threshold increased after the film was peeled off from glass, which indicates that the photon localization effect of the leaky-waveguide structure plays an important role in the reduction of the CRL threshold. By a change in the pump stripe length or the thickness of the film, the peak wavelength red-shifts 6.7 or 5.93 nm, respectively. The PM597 dye molecule solubility changes, and they spontaneously aggregate in the process of toluene volatilization; the PDMS cures, which is the reason for the formation of PM597 micro-/nanocrystals. This thin film random laser with a low dye concentration can be used in integrated optoelectronics and display imaging.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Historically, Class II restorations using resin composite with margins below the dentino-enamel junction (dej) have fared poorly in investigations, exhibiting significant dye penetration along the marginal interfaces. In all reports located by the authors the gingival margins of sub-CEJ restorations have been finished, even though in actual practice this is not feasible in the vast majority of cases. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of finishing on gingival margins located below the cemento-enamel junction of Class II resin composite restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Class II resin composite restorations with margins below the dej were placed in 40 extracted human molars using a dentin-enamel adhesive, a flowable resin composite, and a universal microhybrid resin composite restorative material. In all groups the adhesive was light activated for ten seconds and the restorative resin composite was light activated for ten seconds. The flowable increments were 1 mm in thickness and the restorative resin composite increments were 2 mm in thickness. In groups 1, 3, and 4 the flowable was light activated for ten seconds while in group 2 the flowable was light activated for 40 seconds. In groups 1, 2, and 4 the sub-CEJ margins were finished with finishing discs while in group 3 the sub-CEJ margins were unfinished. In group 4 the dentin adhesive was reapplied following finishing procedures. All groups were immersed in dye for 24 hours. RESULTS The two groups in which the margins were finished exhibited varying degrees of dye penetration. There was no dye penetration in the unfinished and the resealed groups. CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that the finishing procedure itself causes damage to the resin-dentin interface, which allows dye penetration to occur. This could potentially explain why resin adhesive materials have fared so poorly in Class II in vitro investigations, which is not the common clinical experience.
Tuning the wavelength of lasing emission in organic semiconducting laser by the orientation of liquid crystalline conjugated polymer

Abstract:We report the optical pumping of one-dimensional distributed feedback (DFB) conjugated polymer devices using a uniaxially aligned liquid crystalline polymer, poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene). We can independently select the alignment direction (via a rubbed polyimide layer) and the DFB structure (via nanoimprinting). In comparison with unaligned film, we show that lasing threshold is substantially reduced when absorption is parallel to the aligned direction (∼20.0 μJ cm−2 pulse−1). This is mainly due to the higher absorption coefficient estimated in the table by calculating the exciton densities at each threshold value. We also report the control of lasing wavelength through independent selection of alignment direction and DFB orientation, which is achieved through the control of the effective refractive index of waveguide (neff).

Abstract:The rapid development of integrated circuits from the electron tube to the transistor has made the electronic components in integrated circuits develop towards miniaturization, which results in the growing demand for micro/nanoscale solid-state lasers. Organic semiconductor materials are vital in various optoelectronic devices, such as field effect transistors, light-emitting diodes and optical waveguides. Especially, the solid-state laser behavior of organic micro/nanocrystals relying on intermolecular interactions are expected to be promising candidates in constructing novel miniaturized electronics due to their adjustable physicochemical properties, tunable optical performance and the built-in cavity for optical confinement. However, there are still many difficulties to overcome before organic crystals are actually served as components in integrated circuits. Herein, we summarize and look forward to the future development directions of organic micro/nanocrystal lasers.

Abstract:AbstractThe development of high mobility organic laser semiconductors with strong emission is of great scientific and technical importance, but challenging. Herein, we present a high mobility organic laser semiconductor, 2,7‐diphenyl‐9H‐fluorene (LD‐1) showing unique crystallization‐enhanced emission guided by elaborately modulating its crystal growth process. The obtained one‐dimensional nanowires of LD‐1 show outstanding integrated properties including: high absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) approaching 80 %, high charge carrier mobility of 0.08 cm2 V−1 s−1, Fabry‐Perot lasing characters with a low threshold of 86 μJ cm−2and a high‐quality factor of ≈2400. Furthermore, electrically induced emission was obtained from an individual LD‐1 crystal nanowire‐based light‐emitting transistor due to the recombination of holes and electrons simultaneously injected into the nanowire, which provides a good platform for the study of electrically pumped organic lasers and other related ultrasmall integrated electrical‐driven photonic devices.

Abstract:A sophisticated plasmonic nanolithography process for functional crystals has resulted in successful fabrication of nanorods exhibiting robust polarization selectivity directly within the lattice. Several applications are demonstrated through on‐demand writing of plasmonic nanoparticle arrays. Plasmonic nanoparticles enable manipulation and enhancement of light fields at deep subwavelength scales, leading to structures and devices for diverse applications in optics. Despite hybrid plasmonic materials display remarkable optical properties due to interactions between components in nanoproximity, scalable production of plasmonic nanostructures within a single‐crystalline matrix to achieve an ideal plasmon–crystal interface remains challenging. Here, a novel approach is presented to realize efficient manipulation of in‐lattice plasmonic nanoparticles. Employing ultrafast‐laser‐driven plasmonic nanolithography, metallic nanoparticles with controllable morphology are precisely defined in the crystalline lattice of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystal. Through direct ion implantation, hybrid plasmonic material composed of nanoparticles embedded in a sub‐surface amorphous YAG layer is created. Subsequently, femtosecond laser pulses guide formation and reshaping of plasmonic nanoparticles from the amorphous layer into the single‐crystalline matrix along direction of light propagation, facilitated by a plasmon‐mediated evolution of laser energy deposition. By tailoring resonance modes and optimizing the coupling between structured particle assemblies, a range of applications including polarization‐dependent absorption and nonlinearity, controllable photoluminescence, and structural color generation is demonstrated. This research introduces a new approach for fabricating advanced optical materials featuring in‐lattice plasmonic nanostructures, paving the way for the development of diverse functional photonic devices.

Abstract:Abstract Humans and animals often become coinfected with pathogen strains that differ in virulence. The ensuing interaction between these strains can, in theory, be a major determinant of the direction of selection on virulence genes in pathogen populations. Many mathematical analyses of this assume that virulent pathogen lineages have a competitive advantage within coinfected hosts and thus predict that pathogens will evolve to become more virulent where genetically diverse infections are common. Although the implications of these studies are relevant to both fundamental biology and medical science, direct empirical tests for relationships between virulence and competitive ability are lacking. Here we use newly developed strain‐specific real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction protocols to determine the pairwise competitiveness of genetically divergent Plasmodium chabaudi clones that represent a wide range of innate virulences in their rodent host. We found that even against their background of widely varying genotypic and antigenic properties, virulent clones had a competitive advantage in the acute phase of mixed infections. The more virulent a clone was relative to its competitor, the less it suffered from competition. This result confirms our earlier work with parasite lines derived from a single clonal lineage by serial passage and supports the virulencecompetitive ability assumption of many theoretical models. To the extent that our rodent model captures the essence of the natural history of malaria parasites, public health interventions which reduce the incidence of mixed malaria infections should have beneficial consequences by reducing the selection for high virulence.
Polymer nanofibers as novel light-emitting sources and lasing material

Abstract:Polymer micro- and nano-fibers, made of organic light-emitting materials with optical gain, show interesting lasing properties. Fibers with diameters from few tens of nm to few microns can be fabricated by electrospinning, a method based on electrostatic fields applied to a polymer solution. The morphology and emission properties of these fibers, composed of optically inert polymers embedding laser dyes, are characterized by scanning electron and fluorescence microscopy, and lasing is observed under optical pumping for fluences of the order of 10^2 microJ cm^-2. In addition, light-emitting fibers can be electrospun by conjugated polymers, their blends, and other active organics, and can be exploited in a range of photonic and electronic devices. In particular, waveguiding of light is observed and characterized, showing optical loss coefficient in the range of 10^2-10^3 cm^-1. The reduced size of these novel laser systems, combined with the possibility of achieving wavelength tunability through transistor or other electrode-based architectures embedding non-linear molecular layers, and with their peculiar mechanical robustness, open interesting perspectives for realizing miniaturized laser sources to integrate on-chip optical sensors and photonic circuits.

Abstract:Wavelength-tunable micro/nanoscale lasers are particularly attractive as indispensible building blocks for various ultracompact photonic devices. Polymorphic organic materials display distinct emission colors in different crystal forms, providing the potential possibility in tailoring the lasing wavelength. Here we report wavelength-controlled microlasers based on the polymorphism-dependent intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) process in organic microcrystals. With different solution-phase self-assembly methods, three kinds of microstructures were prepared from the same organic ICT compound, where the different crystal structures offer completely distinct molecular environments, having a significant influence on the excited-state ICT process and therefore the emission wavelength. As a result, we realized three different color lasing actions in these three kinds of organic ICT microcystals under two-photon pumping. The results demonstrated here provide useful insights for the rational design of miniaturized lasers with desired performances.
