Abstract:Cu-doped TiO2 nanoparticles are prepared and used as semiconductor materials of photoanode to improve the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). UV–Vis spectroscopy and variable temperature spectroelectrochemistry study are used to characterize the influence of copper dopant with different concentrations on the band gap energies of TiO2 nanoparticles. The prepared Cu-doped TiO2 semiconductor has avoided the formation of CuO during hydrothermal process and lowered the conduction band position of TiO2, which contribute to increase the short circuit current density of DSSCs. At the optimum Cu concentration of 1.0at.%, the short circuit current density increased from 12.54 to 14.98mAcm−2, full sun solar power conversion efficiencies increased from 5.58% up to 6.71% as compared to the blank DSSC. This showed that the presence of copper in DSSCs leads to improvements of up to 20% in the conversion efficiency of DSSCs.

Abstract:SnO2 is an important alternative to TiO2 for use as a semiconductor in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) photoanodes. In this work, we prepared SnO2 and Al-doped SnO2 nanocrystals via a simple hydrothermal method, and found for the first time that the tuning of the conduction band and suppression of charge recombination are simultaneously improved in the Al-doped samples. The electron lifetime is significantly improved and the conduction band edge is shifted negatively by doping the SnO2 photoanode with Al. Compared to the undoped SnO2 DSSCs (AM 1.5, 100 mW cm(-2)), the power conversion efficiency (eta) of the optimized Al-doped SnO2 DSSCs is enhanced by 75%. After being treated with TiCl4, the highest eta of DSSCs based on Al-doped SnO2 nanocrystals is approximately 6.91%, which is a high overall photoconversion efficiency for SnO2-based DSSCs.

Abstract:Pure and tin-incorporated TiO2 (Sn-TiO2) nanoparticles were prepared utilizing photolysis method. Field emission-scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveal the formation of fusiform and spherical agglomeration nanoparticles with mesoporous structure and size that is equal to 20 nm approximately. The preparation of 5%Sn:TiO2 is confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and the empirical formal is Sn0.05TiO4. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirm that they have a 4 nm crystallite size and crystallized as an anatase phase of TiO2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that 1% Sn4+ was successfully incorporated with TiO2 and that Ti3+ is presented as an electron trap. Raman spectrum shows a higher shift of TiO2 peaks with in Sn:TiO2. The band gap decreases with increasing Sn4+ incorporating ratio and reaching a minimum value of 2.62 eV corresponding to 5% Sn:TiO2, as well as the adsorption spectrum of Sn4+-incorporated TiO2 has an excellent transmittance with increasing Sn4+ incorporating from 5% weight ratio until reaching 85%. The results obtained that the optimum conditions for working Sn:TiO2 as a DSSCs are 5%Sn incorporation ratio and pH = 3. EIS measurements were used to quantify the kinetics of interfacial charge transfer, such as chemical capacitance, electron recombination lifespan, charge transfer resistance, charge collection efficiency, and charge transfer resistance. Enhanced power conversion is equal to 12.32% for %5Sn:TiO2/based N3 dye/Ag at pH = 3 by using solar simulator (100 mW/cm2).

Abstract:This study explores the integration of novel microalgae and cyanobacteria-based photo harvesters into natural dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These embedded pigments forming dyes can replace toxic chemical dyes and in the cultivation process eliminate the issues of waste water and air present carbon dioxide. The species taken were microalgal namely Asterarcys quadricellulare and Scenedesmus sp. and cyanobacteria named Cronbergia siamensis and Calothrix sp. DSSCs efficiencies were examined after coating with extracted natural dyes along with voltage, current, and fill factor as among the performance criteria that were extensively assessed. Long-term stability and comparisons with traditional DSSCs were performed and reported in this article. Here, J-V analysis confirmed that Glass/ FTO/ c-TiO 2 / 1-D TiO 2 / CR (methanol)/electrolyte/carbon achieved the highest PCE at 1.04 % for Cronbergia siamensis , along with a remarkable V OC of 1520 mV and a J SC of 1.297 mA/cm 2 for the same device. Whereas ethanol-based highest efficiency was achieved by the extracts of the same species and stood at 0.70 %, and V OC at 1265 mV and J SC at 0.921 mA/cm 2 . Results have indicated that such natural upgrades in energy production through solar extraction can create a never-ending fuel through supplementation by the cells or dyes of microalgae and cyanobacteria.

Abstract:In recent advancements in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) technology, the integration of inorganic nanofillers into polymer electrolytes has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the structural stability and electrochemical performance of the devices. This study investigates the impact of various inorganic nanofillers, including TiO 2 , SiO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 , on the properties of polymer composite electrolytes employed in solid-state DSSCs sensitized with N719 dye. Among the considered nanofillers, the incorporation of Al 2 O 3 into the polymer composite electrolyte demonstrated superior results, exhibiting heightened ionic conductivity and photo-current density attributed to increased amorphicity and reduced crystallinity. The Al 2 O 3 -enhanced DSSCs achieved notable photovoltaic parameters, including a conversion efficiency ( η ) of 5.61%, a high short circuit current ( J SC ) of approximately 13.17 mA/cm 2 , and an open circuit voltage ( V OC ) of approximately 0.707 V. Comparative analysis with other polymer composite electrolytes revealed that the Al 2 O 3 -based system surpassed in terms of photovoltaic performance. This study underscores the pivotal role of diverse nanofillers in polymer composite electrolytes for augmenting photocurrent density, conversion efficiency, and overall device stability.

Abstract:A protein with decay-accelerating activity for the classical C3 convertase, C4b2a, has been isolated on the basis of this function from guinea pig erythrocyte stroma. The isolation procedure for decay-accelerating factor of stroma (DAF-S) utilizes butanol extraction and chromatography on DEAE-Sephacel, hydroxylapatite, and phenyl Sepharose. Purified DAF-S has a m.w. of 60,000 and 65,000 on reduced and unreduced SDS gels, respectively, and exhibits m.w. of 30,000 and 175,000 on alkaline gradient gels, suggesting multiples of a 60,000-65,000 subunit. Purified DAF-S elicited a monospecific antiserum whose IgG fraction neutralized the decay-accelerating activity for C4b,2a affixed to 10(7) sheep erythrocytes (EAC1,4,2) in a dose-response fashion. The monospecific antiserum diluted up to 1:5120 agglutinated 1 x 10(6) guinea pig erythrocytes, but not sheep or human erythrocytes, suggesting that DAF-S, an integral membrane protein, has species-specific antigens that are expressed on the surface of the guinea pig erythrocyte.

Abstract:As thin-film solar cells are the attraction of many research works nowadays, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) among other types hold the promise of excellent cost/performance ratio because of the relatively low material costs and simple processing conditions. In order to improve its relatively low performance, different approaches are being explored to enhance the photon-to-current conversion efficiency. Notably, one of the most accessible approaches is by modifying the optical characteristics of the photoelectrode of DSSCs to improve light trapping within the cell. Here, we introduce a cost-effective nanopatterning process done on the photo-active TiO 2 photoelectrode layer for better light absorption. This simple technique resulted in increased cell short-circuit current density (from 4.664 to 5.963 mA/cm 2 ) which consequently enhanced cell efficiency (from 2.243 to 2.819%). Furthermore, without compromising the absorption significantly, nanopatterned photoelectrodes with a smaller thickness can lead to reduced material costs and possibly allowing the construction of semitransparent cells. This work can contribute to an attainable efficient DSSC manufacturing route for practical applications.

Abstract:This study addresses the growing need for energy worldwide and highlights the necessity of switching to sustainable options like dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), which are well known for their affordability, ease of use, and competitive efficiency. Utilizing the sol–gel method, we synthesized diverse samples, including pristine TiO 2 , Cd-doped TiO 2 , and their heterostructures (TiO 2 @Cd–TiO 2 , Cd–TiO 2 @TiO 2 ). A comprehensive evaluation encompassed structural, morphological, optical properties, and photovoltaic behavior through techniques like XRD, SEM, and UV–visible spectroscopy. Structural analysis highlighted the development of the anatase phase in all samples. The particles exhibited spherical grains, and heterostructures displayed dispersed particles with large sizes, enhancing electronic transport and dye absorption for efficient DSSCs. Cd–TiO 2 @TiO 2 exhibits the shortest bandgap (3.24 eV). Notably, Cd–TiO 2 @TiO 2 demonstrated favorable photovoltaic characteristics, including J sc (8.65 ± 0.2 mA -cm 2 ), V oc (0.78 ± 0.2 V), FF (0.718 ± 0.1), and efficiency (4.848 ± 0.5). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of TiO 2 @Cd–TiO 2 and Cd–TiO 2 @TiO 2 DSSCs unveiled distinct semicircles, indicating reduced charge transfer resistance and enhanced efficiency compared to TiO 2 -only DSSCs. This research contributes vital insights for advancing sustainable and efficient solar cell technologies.

Abstract:This work offers a comprehensive review of recent advancements and challenges in utilizing metal‐free organic dyes for dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), with a focus on NiO‐based photoanodes. It provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the field of renewable energy, particularly those interested in the design and optimization of efficient DSSC materials. The increasing global demand for energy and growing environmental concerns emphasize the crucial role of solar energy as a sustainable and nondepletable resource. Solar cells, particularly dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), have gained prominence due to their efficient conversion of solar power, ecofriendly manufacturing processes, and noteworthy stability. Current research in sustainable energy focuses on transitioning from metal‐based to metal‐free organic materials. Tandem solar cells, combining n‐type and p‐type semiconductors sensitized with diverse photoactive dyes, show potential to surpass thermodynamic limits in photon conversion efficiency. Notably, the exploration of n‐type DSSCs as photoanodes in tandem architectures is promising. However, the absence of efficient p‐type photoactive cathodes remains a significant obstacle. Global research efforts are dedicated to addressing charge recombination issues in NiO‐based devices to enhance the efficiency of p‐type DSSCs. The success of any DSSC hinges on the selection of dyes/sensitizers with suitable anchoring groups, wide absorption in the visible–NIR region, and a high extinction coefficient. This article comprehensively reviews advancements in developing highly efficient p‐type sensitizers, emphasizing their pivotal role in unlocking the full potential of tandem solar cells.

Abstract:This review focuses on recent developments in the nanostructured SnO2 photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs)applications.Carefully designed and fabricated nanostructured SnO2films are advantageous for effective improvement in performance of DSSCs.Nanocrystals can offer a large surface area for dye adsorption;nanowires are able to provide a direct transfer pathway for the rapid collection of photogenerated electrons;the mesoporous,monodisperse beads with a submicrometer-sized diameter ensure a large specific surface area for dye adsorption and simultaneously promote light scattering;the surface modification of SnO2by other oxides may improve the photovoltage and photocurrent,hence resulting in the higher power conversion efficiency of SnO2-based DSSCs.

Abstract:Zinc oxide and tin oxide (ZnO/SnO 2 ) nanocomposites were synthesized using a simple chemical co-precipitation method. The XRD results confirmed that tin oxide with rutile structure and zinc oxide hexagonal phase are formed separately. Further morphological studies revealed that sheet like ZnO formed during chemical reaction while spherical SnO2 nanoparticles were embedded within the ZnO matrix. The presence of elements confirmed in the EDAX analysis and ensured their uniform distribution through elemental mapping. The FTIR spectra showed the characteristics absorption peaks at 437 and 602 cm −1 validates the presence of Zn–O and Sn–O–Sn respectively. The optical properties of ZnO/SnO 2 nanocomposites were studied using UV–Visible. The dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fabricated from different composition of ZnO/SnO 2 . The highest photo conversion efficiency of 5.7% with short circuit current density ( J sc ) of 11.2 mA/cm 2 and an open circuit voltage of 0.7 V for optimized composition. Interestingly, the presence of SnO 2 within ZnO/SnO 2 nanocomposites made a significant reduction in charge transfer resistance at photoanode and electrolyte interface.

Abstract:Tin oxide is a promising candidate for the replacement of titanium dioxide in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), due to its excellent electron transport properties. The performance of TiO2‐based DSSCs can be improved either by modifying the morphology of SnO2 nanostructures, or by doping. Here, we investigate the influence of different dopants (Mg, Zn, and Ag) to SnO2 anode on the DSSC performance. We found that the addition of the dopant affects not only the electron lifetime, but also the dye adsorption as well. The best performance was obtained for zinc doped SnO2 anodes, with the power conversion efficiency of 3.4%.

Abstract:A series of Sn-doped TiO2 with Sn content ranging from 0.25 to 1 mol % were successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method, and its performance as the photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was investigated. TEM and XRD results indicate that the doping has no effect on the morphology and the crystal form of TiO2. The shift of XRD peaks observed at higher angle and the XPS results indicate Sn4+ ions incorporation into the TiO2 lattice. The flatband potential of Sn-TiO2 films shifts from -0.505 V (vs SCE) to -0.55 V with increasing Sn content from 0 to 1 mol at. %, which is beneficial to the increase of V-oc. The higher transfer rate of electrons in the Sn-doped TiO2 films than in the undoped TiO2 films is confirmed by IMPS measurements, which is favorable to the higher J(sc). IMVS and EIS measurements indicate that the charge recombination increases with increasing Sn doping content. Taking these factors, the optimum efficiency of 8.31% was found at 0.5 mol % Sn-doped TiO2 based DSSCs, which gave an efficiency improved by 12.1% compared with that of the cells based on pure TiO2 (7.45%). This work shows that Sn-doped TiO2 is a most interesting material and has good potential for application in photoenergy conversion devices.
Synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dot/ tin disulfide nanosheet composite electro-catalysts for dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and vertically-grown tin disulfide (SnS2) nanosheets are synthesized via hydrothermal method and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique, respectively. The SnS2 nanosheets are directly fabricated on flexible carbon cloth (CC), and then their basal planes are decorated with N-CDs. The as-prepared composite electrodes are used as the counter electrode for the application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The characterizations of N-CDs and SnS2 nanosheets are studied by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR–TEM), scanning electron microscopic (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), Raman spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) ect. Moreover, the cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and photocurrent-density voltage (J-V) are utilized to understand the electro-catalytic performance of N-CDs/SnS2/CC composite counter electrode. The N-CDs/SnS2/CC composite electrode shows higher cathodic reduction current density and lower charge transfer resistance in CV and EIS measurements, respectively, as compared to those of the electrodes with N-CDs or SnS2 alone. Meanwhile, the DSSC using N-CDs/SnS2/CC exhibits cell efficiency (η) of 7.68%, which is higher than those of cells having SnS2/CC (η=7.54%) and N-CDs/CC (η=5.66%) counter electrodes, repectively; it also reaches 94% cell efficiency of the cell using Pt/CC counter electrode (η=8.15%). The design concept of the modification of the basal planes by defect-rich carbon dots (i.e., N-CDs) and highly-exposed edge sites (i.e., vertically-grown SnS2 nanosheets) makes promising route to enhance the performance of two-dimensional electro-catalysts.

Abstract:In this study, porous SnO2 nanosheets composed of SnO2 nanoparticles were prepared by calcining SnS2 nanosheets. The SnO2 nanoparticles have an average diameter of 15–20 nm and porous SnO2 nanosheets have a large specific surface area of 37.39 m2/g. As photoanodes, the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSCs) based on porous SnO2 nanosheets show a superior power conversion efficiency of 0.562%, improved by 134.2% compared to pure SnO2 nanoplate (0.240%). The efficiency improvement could be attributed to the unique porous architecture, which provides efficient electron channels and excellent ability of light scattering.

Abstract:In this work, a fast, environment-friendly and economic route was used to prepare ZnO and their nanocomposites containing reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The prepared nanostructures were well-characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman measurements. The XRD, Raman and TEM results confirmed that the ZnO nanostructures were crystallized into the hexagonal phase, and the nanocomposites containing RGO and CNTs. Morphological studies performed by using FESEM and TEM images showed that the ZnO possessed tube-like morphology with length and diameter in the range of ~1 micron and 90–200 nm, respectively, which were uniform and densely covered on the surface of the carbon materials. The DSSCs were fabricated using prepared nanostructures as a working electrode and platinum as a counter electrode with ruthenium-based dyes and iodide electrolytes. To further improve the efficiency of fabricated solar cells, nanocomposites of prepared nanostructures of ZnO with RGO and CNTs were synthesized, and their results were compared with the pristine samples. The results showed that the ZnO/CNTs (0.5 wt%) nanocomposites electrode exhibited the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSCs with a maximum value of 0.612% compared to 0.326% of DSSC with pure ZnO, and 0.574% of DSSC with ZnO/RGO. Significantly, this technique could be used for large-scale production using the existing economical and highly effective DSSC fabrication technique.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is a promising wide band gap semiconductor material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) because of its high bulk electron mobility. Employing vertically ordered 1-D nanostruchires of SnO2 as the photoanode may overcome the limit of current DSCs by using new redox mediators with faster kinetics than currently used ones. Synthesizing such nanostructures and integrating them into DSCs, however, has been proven challenging. Here, we demonstrate that, by using ZnO nanowires as a sacrificial template, vertically aligned SnO2 nanotube arrays may be feasibly synthesized through a liquid-phase conversion process, and the synthesized SnO2 nanotubes can be further coated with a thin layer of TiO2 to form hybrid TiO2 SnO2 nanotube arrays. Both the resulting SnO2 and hybrid TiO2-SnO2, nanotube arrays are used to fabricate DSCs, and the best performing cell delivers a promising efficiency of 3.53%. Transient photovoltage measurements indicate that the electron recombination lifetime in hybrid TiO2-SnO2 nanotubes is significantly larger than those in TiO2 nanotubes, ZnO nanowires, and films of sintered TiO2 nanoparticles, suggesting promise of the TiO2-coated SnO2 nanotubes for further improvement of DSCs.
TiO2 coated urchin-like SnO2 microspheres for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:Urchin-like SnO2 microspheres have been grown for use as photoanodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). We observed that a thin layer coating of TiO2 on urchin-like SnO2 microsphere photoanodes greatly enhanced dye loading capability and light scattering ability, and achieved comparable solar cell performance even at half the thickness of a typical nanocrystalline TiO2 photoanode. In addition, this photoanode only required attaching ∼55% of the amount of dye for efficient light harvesting compared to one based on nanocrystalline TiO2. Longer decay of transient photovoltage and higher charge recombination resistance evidenced from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the devices based on TiO2 coated urchin-like SnO2 revealed slower recombination rates of electrons as a result of the thin blocking layer of TiO2 coated on urchinlike SnO2. TiO2 coated urchin-like SnO2 showed the highest value (76.1 ms) of electron lifetime (τ) compared to 2.4 ms for bare urchin-like SnO2 and 14.9 ms for nanocrystalline TiO2. TiO2 coated SnO2 showed greatly enhanced open circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current density (Jsc) and fill factor (FF) leading to a four-fold increase in efficiency increase compared to bare SnO2. Although TiO2 coated urchin-like SnO2 showed slightly lower cell efficiency than nanocrystalline TiO2, it only used a half thickness of photoanode and saved ∼45% of the amount of dye for efficient light harvesting compared to normal nanocrystalline TiO2.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized-solar cells (DSSCs) are of great interest as cost-effective and green energy producers. The vastly explored photoanodes are one of the most significant parts of DSSC and still play a crucial role. We employed the fast and facile sol-gel technique to synthesize and dope TiO 2 mesoporous structure with indium atoms. Although In doping in the TiO 2 structure has been used previously, there have been few research on its application as photoanode in DSSCs. We investigated TiO 2 :In as an appropriate candidate for photoanode in DSSC and evaluated its charge transfer and optical, structural, and electrochemical properties. Mott-Schottky results show that indium doping can increase the carrier concentration up to 1.1 × 10 17 cm −3 and elevate the conductivity as well as charge transfer properties. The optical and structural properties were investigated by PL, Raman, and UV–visible methods, and the results showed that TiO 2 :In has suppressed recombination in its structure. Also, In-doping improves the electrochemical properties of the photoanodes. The EIS results establish that In corporation can reduce the charge transfer resistance to 33 Ω cm 2 . The champion TiO 2 :In-based DSSC shows an 8.62 % efficiency, which indicates a 55 % improvement compared to the non-doped TiO 2 .

Abstract:The pursuit of sustainable energy solutions has spurred innovation in photovoltaic technology, with dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) emerging as promising contenders. This study presents a novel approach leveraging holmium-doped TiO 2 /SnO 2 nanocomposites sensitized with organic dyes, Arsenazo-III, carminic acid, and dithizone, blended with poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). Through meticulous characterization and analysis, key parameters including short-circuit current density (Jsc), open-circuit voltage (Voc), fill factor (FF), and overall percent efficiency (%) were scrutinized to evaluate photovoltaic performance comprehensively. Absorption spectra analysis facilitated the calculation of band gaps, revealing a significant reduction from 3.10 eV in pure Titania (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles to 2.72 eV upon doping with Holmium and coupling with SnO 2 . Notably, Arsenazo-III dye-sensitized holmium-doped TiO 2 /SnO 2 nanocomposites exhibited highest power conversion efficiency, achieving a promising efficiency of 2.10 %, which marked a significant improvement over the reference device (0.82 %). This improvement is attributed to the synergistic effects of holmium dopant incorporation and SnO 2 interaction, enhancing light responsiveness. The findings not only validate the efficacy of nanohybrid assemblies but also contribute valuable insights to solar cell technology advancement.
