Influence of 3D-printing method, resin material, and sterilization on the accuracy of virtually designed surgical implant guides

Abstract:Statement of problem: Three-dimensional printing has introduced new manufacturing methods. However, information on the influence of the specific printing technology, material, sterilization, and the comparison between printing and milling on the accuracy of surgical guides is lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of the manufacturing method (printing and milling), printing technology stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP), material, and sterilization on the accuracy of digitally designed surgical implant guides. Material and methods: Resin patient replicas with a single edentulous space were used to place 132 implants with digitally designed surgical guides. The accuracy of postoperative implant position was analyzed for the manufacturing method (printing and milling), resin materials, and preoperative autoclaving. To determine 3D accuracy, angular displacement, mean horizontal crestal, apical displacement, and the linear vertical displacement at the apex were calculated separately for each group (n=12). In addition, the surgical guides were qualitatively analyzed by using field emission scanning electron micrograph. Results: The postoperative angular deviation ranged from 0.76 ±0.52 degrees (Rapidshape D20II with NextDent SG) to 2.43 ±0.64 degrees (Form2 with NextDent SG) (P<.001). Linear horizontal displacement at the crest was smallest for Rapidshape D20II with 3Delta Guide (0.27 ±0.08 mm) and highest for Form2 with NextDent SG (0.54 ±0.10 mm) (P<.001). Linear horizontal displacement at the apex ranged from 0.36 ±0.10 mm (SolFlex 350 with V-Print SG) to 0.89 ±0.32 mm (Form2 with NextDent SG) (P<.001). Considering the vertical position displacement was no more than 0.43 ±0.07 mm (Form2 with NextDent SG) short of the apex, none of the implant tips were displaced apically. Preoperative autoclaving differentially impaired the accuracy of surgical guides. Conclusions: The specific manufacturing technique, the 3D printing device, the resin material, and the application of preoperative sterilization all affected the accuracy of the postoperative implant position. Irrespective of the manufacturing method, all implants were placed within the commonly accepted safety distance.
Influence of different scan body design features and intraoral scanners on the congruence between scan body meshes and library files: An in vitro study

Abstract:Statement of problem: Implant scan bodies (ISBs) present with a variety of features, including diverse design geometries and manufacturing materials. How these features influence the congruence between the clinically obtained mesh file and the software-based library file of the scan body during the alignment stage within the computer-aided design (CAD) software program is unclear. It is also uncertain how these features influence the scanning accuracy of different scanners. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate how various scan body shapes manufactured from different materials influence the scanning accuracy of 6 intraoral scanners (IOSs) and 1 desktop scanner. Material and methods: A 3-dimensionally (3D) printed cast fitted with 4 different implant analogs and their corresponding scan bodies (Straumann Cares RN Mono; Straumann, MIS V3 SP; MIS, Paltop SP; Paltop and TV70; TRI) was scanned using 6 intraoral scanners (Primescan; Dentsply Sirona, TRIOS 3; 3Shape A/S, TRIOS 5; 3Shape A/S, Medit i-700; Medit, Fussen S6000; Fussen, and Runyes 3DS; Runyes) and 1 desktop scanner (7series; Dental Wings). A metrology mesh comparison software program was used for analysis. Inferences were drawn using a univariate repeated measures 2-way ANOVA. Post hoc analysis was conducted with pairwise Bonferroni tests (α=.05). Results: A significant 2-way interaction was found between scanner model and scan body model, (F [5.518, 49.659]=36.251, P<.001). The mean absolute deviation for the different scanners ranged between 21 µm and 35 µm across all scan bodies, but the model of the scan body influenced the deviation of the scanner. The mean absolute deviation for the different scan bodies ranged from 19 µm to 46 µm across all scanners, but the model of the scanner influenced the deviation of the scan body. Conclusions: Regarding implant scan body features, a design with a less complex shape and fewer sharp line angles and a design with a cylindrical shape exhibited statistically significantly higher congruence between the clinical mesh and the software library files. Regarding intraoral scanners, Primescan had a statistically significantly lower mean absolute deviation compared with that of the other scanners across all scan bodies tested.
Scanning accuracy with splinted and unsplinted implant scan bodies for the edentulous arch at implant level: an in vitro study

Abstract:Accuracy of completely edentulous arch scanning with implant scan bodies has not been completely validated for intraoral scanners. For desktop laboratory scanners validations were found in the literature. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the dimensional accuracy of scanning with splinted and unsplinted scan bodies on a completely edentulous maxillary arch with 6 implants. A maxillary edentulous master cast with 6 implants was used as control for all implant level impressions. 6 implants were digitally planned and placed at different angulation of 0, 0 17° and 30°. A contact coordinate measuring machine (CMM) was used to generate baseline linear measurements of the master cast. Four test groups included: 2 intraoral scanners Trios (3shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) and True Definition (3M ESPE, St Paul, MN), one industrial scanner Atos (Core optical 3D scanner) and one conventional impression group scanned with laboratory scanner Dental Wings 7 Series. Each scan recording was made with splinted and unsplinted scan bodies. Digital datasets of all measurements were compared with the CMM baseline values using PolyWorks® InnovMetric Software in order to assess the linear and angular deviations and determine the accuracy of complete arch digital impression. Factorial ANOVA showed significant effect with splinting, scanner type, inter-implant distance and implant angulation for linear deviations. Splinted scan bodies revealed elevated linear and angular deviation values for all scanners with significantly highest deviations for True Definition scanner. Significant correlation was found between inter-implant distance and linear deviation (r =0.45, P =<0.001) with increased linear deviations among all scanners, regardless of splinting. ( P <0.05). Significant effect on accuracy was seen for angular deviation with splinting, scanner type and implant angulation; significant difference was found between 0° and 30° implant angulation ( P =0.035) with more deviation with 30° implant angulation. The accuracy of the complete arch implant digital impression using splinted scan bodies was significantly reduced for measurements that crossed the arch midline. The digital impression technique using a broad splint design to connect scan bodies was not found to improve the scan accuracy for intraoral scanners.

Abstract:Schistosomiasis is endemic in many parts of the tropics and subtropics with an estimated 200 million people, at least, infected worldwide. The symptoms and signs of vesical and gastrointestinal forms are readily recognized but ectopic forms are rare even in endemic areas and present a greater diagnostic challenge, particularly when they are encountered in nontropical climes. We now report two cases of cutaneous schistosomiasis presenting in Edinburgh with subtle, but remarkably similar, skin lesions.
Effect of 3D printer, implant analog and angulation on the accuracy of analog position in implant casts

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the accumulative effect of 3D printer, implant analog systems, and implant angulation on the accuracy of analog position in implant casts. Methods: A reference cast, presenting a case of a three-unit implant-supported prosthesis, was scanned with a coordinate measurement machine, producing the first reference data set (CMM, n = 1). The second reference data set (n = 10) was prepared using an intraoral scanner (IOS) (Trios4). Test quadrant casts were produced using three DLP type 3D printers, Max (MAX UV385), Pro (PRO 4K65 UV), and Nex (NextDent 5100), and three implant analog systems, El (Elos), Nt (Nt-trading), and St (Straumann) (n = 90). Stone casts were also produced via analog impressions (Stone, n = 10). After digitization, the accuracy of 3D distance, local angulation (angle between implants) and global angulation (angle between the implant center axis and an axis perpendicular to the global plane) was evaluated by comparing the reference (CMM, IOS), test (3D print), and control (Stone) groups using metrology software. Data were statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey`s tests (α = 0.05). Results: IOS was truer in 3D implant distance and more precise in capturing local angulation than Stone (p ≤ 0.05). Other measurements were similar between both groups (p > 0.05). The amount of error introduced in the workflow by IOS and 3D printing was mostly similar (p > 0.05). 3D printed casts had similar or even higher accuracy than Stone group (p > 0.05). In most cases, higher trueness was achieved when using PRO 4K65 UV 3D printer and Elos implant analog system (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: 3D printer, implant analog system, and implant angulation have a significant effect on the accuracy of analog position in implant casts. Limited-span implant-supported cases could be reproduced digitally with similar accuracy as conventional methods. Clinical significance: A fully digital workflow with a carefully selected 3D printer and implant analog system can increase the accuracy of digitally produced implant casts with comparable accuracy to conventional workflow.

Abstract:Background: The study's objective was to assess the accuracy (trueness and precision) of orthodontic models obtained from crowded and spaced dentition finalized for the production of clear aligners. Four 3D printers featuring different technologies and market segments were used for this purpose. Methods: Two digital master models were obtained from two patients featuring respectively crowded dentition (CM group) and diastema/edentulous spaces (DEM group). The 3D printers tested were: Form 3B (SLA technology, medium-professional segment), Vector 3SP (SLA technology, industrial segment), Asiga Pro 4K65 (DLP technology, high-professional segment), and Anycubic Photon M3 (LCD technology, entry-level segment). Each 3D printed model was scanned and superimposed onto the reference master model and digital deviation analysis was performed to assess the trueness and precision calculated as root mean square (RMS). All data were statistically examined to obtain intra-group and inter-groups comparisons(p 0.05). Results: In both CM and DEM groups, SLA 3D printers (Vector 3SP and Form 3B) showed lower trueness error compared to DLP/LCD technologies (Asiga Pro 4K65, Anycubic Photon M3) (p < 0.001). In general, the entry-level printer (Anycubic Photon M3) showed the greatest trueness error (p < 0.001). Comparing CM and DEM models generated with the same 3D printer, statistically significant differences were found only for Asiga Pro 4k65 and Anycubic Photon M3 printers (p > 0.05). Concerning data of precision, the DLP technology (Asiga Pro 4k65) showed lower error compared to the other 3D printers tested. The trueness and precision errors were within the accepted clinical error for clear aligner manufacturing (< 0.25 mm), with the entry-level 3D printer nearly reaching this value. Conclusions: The accuracy of orthodontic models generated for clear aligners can be affected by different 3D printer technologies and anatomical characteristics of dental arches.
Dimensional Accuracy of Dental Models for Three-Unit Prostheses Fabricated by Various 3D Printing Technologies

Abstract:Previous studies on accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) printed model focused on full arch measurements at few points. The aim of this study was to examine the dimensional accuracy of 3D-printed models which were teeth-prepped for three-unit fixed prostheses, especially at margin and proximal contact areas. The prepped dental model was scanned with a desktop scanner. Using this reference file, test models were fabricated by digital light processing (DLP), Multi-Jet printing (MJP), and stereo-lithography apparatus (SLA) techniques. We calculated the accuracy (trueness and precision) of 3D-printed models on 3D planes, and deviations of each measured points at buccolingual and mesiodistal planes. We also analyzed the surface roughness of resin printed models. For overall 3D analysis, MJP showed significantly higher accuracy (trueness) than DLP and SLA techniques; however, there was not any statistically significant difference on precision. For deviations on margins of molar tooth and distance to proximal contact, MJP showed significantly accurate results; however, for a premolar tooth, there was no significant difference between the groups. 3D color maps of printed models showed contraction buccolingually, and surface roughness of the models fabricated by MJP technique was observed as the lowest. The accuracy of the 3D-printed resin models by DLP, MJP, and SLA techniques showed a clinically acceptable range to use as a working model for manufacturing dental prostheses

Accuracy of five different 3D printing workflows for dental models comparing industrial and dental desktop printers

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy, in terms of trueness and precision, of printed models using five different industrial and dental desktop 3D printers. Materials and methods: Full-arch digital models with scanbodies of 15 patients were printed with five different 3D printers. The industrial printers were 3D system Project MJP2500 (3DS) and Objet30 OrthoDesk (Obj). The dental desktop printers were NextDent 5100 (ND), Formlabs Form 2 (FL) and Rapidshape D30 (RS). A total of 225 printed models were analysed. The printed models were digitized and compared with the reference cast model using the Control X software (Geomagic). The descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA with the post hoc Tukey test were performed (α = 0.05). Results: The one-way ANOVA for the trueness and precision of the printed model presented the best results for the 3DS, followed by ND, Obj, FL and RS (P < 0.01). In the scanbody zone, the best results were for the 3DS group, followed by Obj, ND, FL and RS (P < 0.01). Comparing the technologies, the Multijet technology used in industrial printers presented better results than the DLP and SLA technologies used in dental desktop printers (P > 0.01). Conclusions: There were statistically significant differences in terms of the accuracy of the printed models, with better results for the industrial than the dental desktop 3D printers. Clinical relevance: The industrial 3D printers used in dental laboratories presented better accuracy than the in-office dental desktop 3D printers, and this should be considered when the best accuracy is needed to perform final prosthetic restorations.
Accuracy of Impressions for Multiple Implants: A Comparative Study of Digital and Conventional Techniques

Abstract:Statement of problem. Intraoral scanning has benefits over conventional impression making, but whether scanning is sufficiently accurate for multiple implants is unclear.Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the trueness of digital scans acquired by using intraoral scanners from a small range to a complete arch with the conventional impression technique and to determine the influence of 2 different evaluation methods (best -fit algorithm versus absolute linear deviation) on the outcomes of accuracy assessment.Material and methods. A mandibular model with 8 implants (A-H) around an edentulous arch was used as the master model. Open-format standard tessellation language (STL) data sets (1 reference file from a highly accurate dental laboratory scanner, 10 files from an intraoral scanner, and 10 files from digitized conventional impressions at room temperature) were imported to a metrology software program, and 5 groups of scanning ranges (AB, FGH, CDEF, BCDEFG, and ABCDEFGH) were identified simulating different clinical situations. Two evaluation methods -root mean square values calculated from the best -fit algorithm and average value of linear discrepancies from absolute linear deviation -were used to describe the trueness values. The impacts of different scanning or impression methods, ranges, and evaluation methods were tested by using a 3-way ANOVA. The effect of the scanning range on accuracy was further identified with 1-way ANOVA. The paired-sample t test was used to determine the differences of trueness values between the 2 methods in different groups.Results. The trueness values of the implant impressions were significantly affected by different scanning or impression methods (P<.001), evaluation methods (P<.001), and scanning ranges (P<.001) as independent variables. With use of the best -fit algorithm, deviations from the digital scans were significantly greater than those from the conventional impressions in cross -arch situations (groups CDEF, BCDEFG, and ABCDEFGH). With use of the absolute linear deviation method, statistically significant lower accuracy was found when larger areas were encountered (groups BCDEFG and ABCDEFGH). Use of the absolute linear deviation method resulted in a higher mean score of inaccuracy than that from the best -fit algorithm method in most situations.Conclusions. Scanning or impression methods, ranges, and evaluation methods affected the dimensional accuracy (trueness) of scans or impressions with multiple implants. Digital scans had worse trueness values compared with those made with the conventional splinting open-tray technique when cross-arch implant impressions were acquired. Effect of using scan body accessories and inter‐implant distances on the accuracy of complete arch implant digital impressions: An in vitro study

Abstract:Purpose: To introduce a novel design for scan body accessory parts that are reusable, easy to attach and detach without permanent change of the scan body, and can be used with different inter‐implant distances to enhance the accuracy of complete arch implant scans. Materials and Methods: A maxillary polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) model with a soft tissue replica was fabricated with four implant analogs located at tooth positions 17, 13, 22, and 27 with 18, 25, and 30 mm inter‐implant distances. Four scan bodies (SBs) were attached to the implants. The model was scanned with a laboratory scanner to be used as a reference scan. A total of 40 scans were made with the same intraoral scanner and they were divided equally into two groups. Group A: Complete arch implant scans without scan body accessories (n = 20), and Group B: Complete arch implant scans with scan body accessories (n = 20). Intraoral scans were exported and superimposed on the reference scan using reverse engineering inspection software to be evaluated for 3D deviations, angular deviations, and linear deviations. Statistical analysis was performed with student t‐test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures followed by post hoc adjusted Bonferroni test. The level of significance was set at P = 0.05. Results: The scan body accessories decreased both the 3D and linear deviations, with a statistically significant difference at SB4 for the 3D deviation (P = 0.043) and the linear inter‐implant discrepancies between SB1–SB2 and SB3–SB4 (P = 0.029 and < 0.001), respectively. However, there was no statistically significant difference in angular deviation between the study groups. Implant positions had significant differences within each group. Conclusions: A significant improvement in the accuracy of the complete arch implant digital impression was achieved by using the scan body accessories, particularly in reducing the 3D and linear deviations at the most distant implant positions.

Abstract:In contemporary dentistry, several 3D printing techniques, including a stereolithography apparatus (SLA), digital light processing (DLP), liquid crystal display (LCD), and PolyJet 3D inkjet printing technology (PolyJet), are employed for model production. Despite their widespread use, there remains a paucity of the literature regarding the trueness and precision of these devices in dental applications. Existing studies comparing the accuracy of dental models manufactured by different printing technologies yield disparate conclusions regarding dental prosthesis manufacturing. This study aimed to test two null hypotheses: first, that the trueness of various new-generation 3D printers is equivalent, and second, that the trueness of printing by these printers is sufficient for achieving high-precision mastercasts in dental prosthodontics manufacturing. The research focuses on evaluating the trueness of five contemporary dental 3D printers: Anycubic Mono X 6Ks (Hongkong Anycubic Technology Co., Hongkong, China), Asiga Max (Asiga, Sydney, Australia), Creo C5 (Planmeca Oy, Helsinki, Finland), Form 3B (Formlabs, Boston, MA, USA), and J5 Dentajet (Stratasys Ltd., Eden Prairie, MN, USA). The methodology employed involved the creation of a digital test object using Blender software, adhering meticulously to the dimensions outlined in ISO standard 20896-1. These dimensions were chosen to be both relevant for this study and representative of clinical scenarios. Subsequently, the test object was printed and precise measurements were conducted utilizing a metrology-type Nikon XTH225 ST Reflection target in conjunction with VGStudio MAX analysis software. The results of our investigation revealed clinically negligible deviations in ball dimensions across all printers, with the maximum observed deviations ranging between 1.17% and 2.03% (notably observed in the Creo C5 printer). Transversal distortion exhibited variance based on the linear accuracy of each printer, with Stratasys21 and Formlabs 3B demonstrating superior accuracy among the evaluated printers. Distortions in the analyzed dimensions (specifically, anterior b-c, posterior a-d, and oblique a-c) were found to be uniform. In conclusion, while the first null hypothesis was rejected, indicating variations in trueness among the 3D printers assessed, our findings affirm the suitability of all five analyzed 3D printers for clinical applications. Consequently, these printers can be utilized for the fabrication of high-precision mastercasts in dental prosthodontics manufacturing.
A Follow-Up Study on SLA and SLS Technology

Abstract:Background: With the rise of new 3D printers, assessing accuracy is crucial for obtaining the best results in patient care. Previous studies have shown that the highest accuracy is achieved with SLS printing technology; however, SLA printing technology has made significant improvements in recent years. Methods: In this study, a realistic anatomical model of a mandible and skull, a cutting guide for mandibular osteotomy, and a splint for orthognathic surgery were replicated five times each using two different 3D printing technologies: SLA and SLS. Results: The SLA group had a median trueness RMS value of 0.148 mm and a precision RMS value of 0.117 mm. The SLS group had a median trueness RMS value of 0.144 mm and a precision RMS value of 0.096 mm. There was no statistically significant difference in RMS values between SLS and SLA technologies regarding trueness. Regarding precision, however, the RMS values for SLS technology were significantly lower in the splint and cutting guide applications than those printed with SLA technology. Conclusions: Both 3D printing technologies produce modern models and applications with equally high dimensional accuracy. Considering current cost pressures experienced by hospitals, the lower-cost SLA 3D printer is a reliable choice for point-of-care 3D printing.

Abstract:Background: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the inter-implant distance, inter-implant axis, and intra-implant axis of three implants in a straight line by using a laboratory scanner (LBS) versus an intra-oral scanner (IOS) with two different intra-oral scan bodies (ISBs). Methods: A 3D model was printed with internal hex implant analogs of three implants in positions 15#, 16#, and 17#. Two standard intra-oral scan bodies (ISBs) were used: MIS ISB (two-piece titanium) and Zirkonzhan ISB (two-piece titanium). Both ISBs were scanned using 7 Series dental wings (LBS) and 30 times using Primescan (IOS). For each scan, a stereolithography (STL) file was created and a comparison between all the scans was performed through superimposition of the STL files by using 3D analysis software (PolyWorks® 2020; InnovMetric, Québec, QC, Canada). A Kolmogorov–Smirnov test was performed followed by a Mann–Whitney test (p < 0.05). Results: The change in inter-implant distance for the MIS ISB was significantly lower compared to the ZZ (p < 0.05). The change in intra-implant angle was significantly lower for the ZZ ISB compared to MIS (p < 0.05). The changes in inter-implant angle between the mesial and middle and between the middle and distal were significantly lower for MIS compared to ZZ in contrast to mesial to distal, which was significantly higher (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Both ISBs showed differences in all the parameters between the LBS and the IOS. The geometry of the scan abutment had an impact on the inter-implant distance as the changes in the inter-implant distance were significantly lower for the MIS ISB. The changes in the intra-implant angle were significantly lower for the ZZ ISB. There is a need for further research examining the influence of geometry, material, and scan abutment parts on the trueness.

Abstract:Statement of problem: Studies are sparse on how splinting scan bodies or incorporating 3-dimensionally (3D) printed scan aids influence the trueness of complete arch digital scans. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the trueness of multisite implant recordings obtained using 6 different methods on an edentulous mandible. Material and methods: A definitive cast of an edentulous mandible with 4 multi-unit analogs placed at different angles and interanalog distances was extraorally scanned, and the resulting data were saved as a reference file. To obtain experimental files, 6 distinct methods were used: conventional impression with splinted open-tray impression copings (IC), intraoral scanning (IOS) without splinting scan bodies or using any scan aids (SB), IOS with pattern resin-splinted scan bodies (PR), IOS with composite resin-splinted scan bodies (CR), IOS with 3D printed custom scan bodies (CSB), and IOS with 3D printed auxiliary apparatus (AA). The experimental files were aligned to the reference file in a metrology software program. The 3D comparison algorithm was run to quantify the root mean square estimate error (RMS). Scan bodies in the files were converted to hollow virtual cylinders, and the Cartesian coordinates of the lines passing through the centers of these cylinders were recorded to analyze angular (AD) and linear distortion (LD). LD was further analyzed along the x (∆X), y (∆Y), and z axes (∆Z). One-way ANOVAs with the Tukey HSD test were used for statistical analysis (α=.05). Results: AD at all sites, LD at all sites, and the RMS error showed significant differences (P<.05). The IC group showed the lowest AD values across all sites, followed by the AA, CSB, PR, CR, and SB groups. The SB group had the greatest LD values at all sites, while the IC group indicated the lowest LD values at all sites except the left anterior site. In terms of 3D distortions, the SB group had the largest RMS value, whereas the IC group showed the lowest RMS value. ∆X, ∆Y, and ∆Z values also showed significant differences at all sites (P<.001) except for the ∆Z values at the right anterior site (P=.194). The highest mean ∆X, ∆Y, and ∆Z values were recorded in the SB group except for the ∆Z measurement of the left posterior site. Conclusions: The IC group outperformed the other groups. The AA group exhibited distortion comparable with that of the IC group. Splinting scan bodies or using scan aids enhanced the trueness.

Abstract:Aim: This study analyses the tolerance and accuracy of 3D printed casts created by two printing techniques and cast geometry deformations after six months. MISC. Methodology. An A 28-year-old volunteer with full dentition was scanned using 3shape's TRIOS3. 3Shape's Dental System converted the scan to STL. NextDent 5100 DLP and Forms Lab Form 2 SLA printers received the STL file. Each printer made 10 casts. Every cast was scanned using a 3Shape E3 Scanner (E3 Scanner from 3Shape). A cloud comparison tool compared each scan to the volunteer's original scan. The two printers' accuracy was measured at the time of the scan and six months afterward using IBM's SPSS 28 for a one-way ANOVA. Shapiro Wilk statistics were not significant P> 0.05, proving normality. ANOVA was used to compare printers' accuracy. Results. Table 1 shows the means and SDs. Wilk's Lambda of p.05 (F = 95.533 and partial eta squared = 0.841) reveals an initial and six-month accuracy difference. A P 0.05 within-subject’s tolerance effect was found. P=.503 demonstrates printer type doesn't affect participation. The study's mean was.995, with a standard error of.066 and CI of.856 to 1.134. Conclusion. The accuracy measurement decreased significantly between the initial and six-month measurements. There was no difference in accuracy between the two measurements for either printer. There was a statistically significant difference between each cast and each printer's first STL file information. However, the distinction was within the accepted tolerance of -/+ 42 μm (Envision TEC reported an accepted tolerance level).

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the reproducibility of linear measurements performed in dental models produced via intraoral scanning and three-dimensional (3D) printing using digital light processing (DLP) and fused deposition modeling (FDM). A sample of 22 participants was selected for this study. Intraoral scanning was performed in each participant with TRIOSTM (3Shape A/STM, Copenhagen, Denmark) device. The digital models were 3D printed using DLP and FDM techniques. Using a caliper, intraoral linear measurements were performed in situ (on the surface of participant’s teeth) and on the 3D printed models. The measurements taken intraoral and on the models were compared using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). The correlation between measurements taken in situ and on DLP models was poor (<0.4), while between in situ and FDM it ranged from poor to satisfactory ( 0.05). According to Bland-Altman approach, the size of measurements did not bias the outcomes. The intraoral scanning and 3D printing techniques used in this study enabled the reproducibility of linear measurements, however, discrete distortions that might be clinically significant occurred.
Dimensional accuracy and surface characteristics of complete-arch cast manufactured by six 3D printers

Abstract:Objective: This in vitro study aimed to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate and compare the horizontal and vertical accuracies of complete-arch casts produced by six 3D printers with different printing principles and resolutions using a low-viscosity resin material. Methods: A reference cast was designed by CAD software. The 3D printers used were DLPa (Asiga MAX), DLPk (cara Print 4.0), LCD2o (Ondemand 2 K Printer), LCD2p (Photon Mono X), LCD4s (SONIC 4 K), and SLA (ZENITH U). Ten casts were printed for each 3D printer using a low-viscosity resin. The accuracy of each printed cast was evaluated using shell-to-shell deviations, 12 linear, one angular, and five height deviations, with a reference cast as the control. The surface features of the casts were examined using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and digital cameras. Results: The evaluation of shell-to-shell deviation revealed that DLPa and SLA printers exhibited low trueness values, whereas LCD printers displayed high trueness values. Among the LCD printers, LCD4s and LCD2o exhibited the lowest and highest trueness values, respectively. DLPa printers showed lower trueness values for intercanine and intermolar distances, whereas LCD printers generally demonstrated high trueness values. However, LCD4s exhibited similar trueness values to those of SLA and DLPk. The height deviation was smallest in the anterior area, whereas the largest height deviation occurred in the canine teeth. The surface characteristics indicated that the SLA casts had greater light reflection and blunt canine tips. The FE-SEM observations highlighted that the LCD and DLP printers exhibited varying layer characteristics, with some presenting rough and uneven borders in the anterior lingual area. Significance: The accuracy of 3D printed casts varied among the 3D printer groups: DLPa and SLA were accurate for shell-to-shell deviation, with DLPa being the most accurate for linear and angular deviations. Regardless of the XY resolution, the DLP printers outperformed the LCD printers. Among the LCD group of 3D printers, higher-resolution LCD4s demonstrated increased accuracy. The SLA exhibited soft layer borders in the FE-SEM owing to its laser spot characteristics and prominent light reflection in the digital camera images.
