Abstract:Two new copper-thiacalix[4]arene compounds, [Cu-2(1)-Cl-2(H(4)TC4A)](CH3OH) (1) and [Cu(I)2Cl(2)(H(4)PTC4A)](CH3OH)(CHCl3)(0.5) (2) (where H(4)TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene and H(4)PTC4A = p-phenylthiacalix[4]arene), were synthesized by the solvothermal method in the mixed CH3OH/CHCl3 (1: 1) solvent and reassembled in air at room temperature to two other structures, [(Cu4Cl3)-Cl-II(HCO2)(TC4A)(CH3-OH)(2)(H2O)](CHCl3)(CH3OH)(2.7) (3) and [(Cu4Cl4)-Cl-II(PTC4A)(CH3OH)(4)] (4), respectively. All these four compounds were characterized by TG analyses, FTIR spectroscopy, and singlecrystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Compounds 1 and 2 feature two-dimensional layered networks, while compounds 3 and 4 are assembled by some tetranuclear units. Abstract:Multiferrocenyl and multiadamantyl cuboctahedron nanospheres were synthesized via rapid self-assembly reactions of twelve 90 degrees Pd-II-containing compounds and twenty-four 120 degrees organic bidentate N-ligands in acetone solution. The selected self-assembly reaction and corresponding solvent were demonstrated to be effective and simple in the preparation of self-assembled nanospheres. DOSY NMR spectroscopy, AFM images and theoretical calculations confirmed the formation of cuboctahedron complexes with the size of 4-5 nm. Multifunctional molecular self-assembly processes offer considerable synthetic advantages including significantly fewer steps, fast and facile formation of final desirable products, and will lead to a new multifunctionality platform for cuboctahedron complexes.

Abstract:A large polymolybdate-templated {Ag49Mo16} cluster protected by six thiacalix[4]arene (TC4A) molecules was synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal reaction. Structural analysis shows that the {Ag49Mo16} is assembled by inserting a [Mo6O22]8- cluster into a [Ag49Mo10@(TC4A)6] cage, representing the first polyoxometalate-templated Ag cluster protected by calixarene macrocyclic ligands. The solution stability and photoelectric properties of {Ag49Mo16} are discussed. Furthermore, this POM-templated Ag nanocluster realized electrocatalytic CO2 reduction application, and 44.75% CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) was obtained at a voltage of -0.8 V (vs RHE).

Abstract:We report the synthesis, structure anatomy, and catalytic properties of Ag14Cu2(CCArF)14(PPh3)4 (CCArF: 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylene) nanoclusters, denoted as Ag14Cu2. Ag14Cu2 has a robust electronic structure with two free valence electrons, and it has a distinctive absorbance feature. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) disclosed that Ag14Cu2 possesses an octahedral Ag6 metal kernel capped by two Ag4Cu1(CCArF)7(PPh3)2 metal-ligand units. Remarkably, it exhibits excellent bifunctional catalytic performance for 4-nitrophenol reduction and the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR). In 4-nitrophenol reduction, it adopts first-order reaction kinetics with a rate constant of 0.137 min-1, while in the eCO2RR, it shows a CO faradaic efficiency (FECO) of 83.71% and a high current density of 92.65 mA cm-2 at -1.6 V vs. RHE. Moreover, Ag14Cu2 showed robust long-term stability with no significant decay in current density and FECO over 10 h of continuous operation in the eCO2RR. This study not only enriches the potpourri of alkynyl-protected bimetallic AgCu nanoclusters, but also demonstrates the great potential of employing metal nanoclusters for bifunctional catalytic applications.

Abstract:Three p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H(4)TC4A)-supported Co(II) compounds, [Co(4)(TC4A)(N(3))(4)(N(6)H(2))(CH(3)OH)](CH(3)OH)(2) (1), [Co(8)(TC4A)(2)(N(3))(2)(N(6)H(2))(2)(CH(3)COO)(4)(CH(3)OH)(4)](OH)(2)(CH(3)OH)(4) (2), and [Co(10)(TC4A)(4)(N(3))(4)](CH(3)OH)(4) (3), have been solvothermally obtained in one pot and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, powder XRD, and IR spectroscopy. This work presents the first one-dimensional (1) cobalt cluster for the calixarene complexes and another two octanuclear (2) or decanuclear (3) cobalt clusters. In the structures of compounds 1 and 2, a novel N(6)H(2) ligand formed by the in situ (2 + 3) cycloaddition of two azides was observed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations give the heat of formation (2N(3)(-) + 2H(+) --> N(6)H(2)) and decomposition energy (N(6)H(2) --> 3N(2) + H(2)) of 677.47 and 124.85 kcal/mol, respectively. Furthermore, an intergradation was determined at the B3LYP/6-311++g(d,p) level for the formation of the N(6)H(2) ligand. In addition, one TC4A ligand of a sandwich unit adopts a cone conformation, while the other adopts a pinched cone conformation in 3. The magnetic properties of these three compounds were influenced mainly by the orbital contributions of the distorted octahedral Co(II) ions.
Stepwise Assembly of Ag 42 Nanocalices Based on a Mo VI -Anchored Thiacalix[4]arene Metalloligand

Abstract:Metalloligand strategy has been well recognized in the syntheses of heterometallic coordination polymers; however, such a strategy used in the assembly of silver nanoclusters is not broadly available. Herein, we report the stepwise syntheses of a family of halogen-templated Ag42 nanoclusters (Ag42c-Ag42f) based on MoVI-anchored p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H4TC4A) as a metalloligand (hereafter named MoO3-TC4A). X-ray crystallography demonstrates that they are similar C3-symmetric silver-organic nanocalices capped by six MoO3-TC4A metalloligands, which are evenly distributed up and down the base of 42 silver atoms. These nanoclusters can be disassembled to six bowl-shaped [Ag11(MoO3-TC4A)(RS)3] secondary building units (SBUs, R = Et or nPr), which are fused together in a face-sharing fashion surrounding Cl- or Br- as a central anion template. The electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) indicates their high stabilities in solution and verifies the formation of the MoO3-TC4A metalloligand, thereby rationalizing the overall stepwise assembly process for them. Moreover, Ag42c shows lower cytotoxicity and better activity against the HepG-2 cell line than MCF-7 and BGC-823. These results not only exemplify the effectiveness of a thiacalix[4]arene-based metalloligand in the assembly of silver nanoclusters but also give us profound insight about the step-by-step assembly process in silver nanoclusters.

Abstract:The pursuit of precision in the engineering of metal nanoparticle assemblies has long fascinated scientists, but achieving atomic-level accuracy continues to pose a significant challenge. This research sheds light on the hierarchical assembly processes of two high-nuclearity Cu(I) nanoclusters (NCs). By employing a multiligand cooperative stabilization strategy, we have isolated a series of thiacalix[4]arene (TC4A)/alkynyl coprotected Cu(I) NCs (Cux, where x = 9, 13, 17, 22). These NCs are intricately coassembled from the fundamental building units of {Cu4(TC4A)} and alkynyl-stabilized Cu5L6 in various ratios. By capturing active anion templates such as O2-, Cl-, or C22- that are generated in situ, we have further explored the secondary structural self-assembly of these clusters. Cu13 serves as a secondary assembly module for constructing Cu38 and Cu43, which exhibit the highest nuclearity reported to date among Cu(I) NCs encased in macrocyclic ligands. Notably, Cu38 demonstrates an impressive Faradaic efficiency of 62.01% for hydrocarbons at -1.57 V vs RHE during CO2 electroreduction, with 34.03% for C2H4 and 27.98% for CH4. This performance establishes it as an exceptionally rare, large, atomically precise metal NC (nuclearity >30) capable of catalyzing the formation of highly electro-reduced hydrocarbon products. Our research has introduced a new approach for constructing high-nuclearity Cu(I) NCs through a hierarchical assembly method and investigating their potential in the electrocatalytic transformation of CO2 into hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Tuning the properties of atomic crystals in the two-dimensional (2D) limit is synthetically challenging, but critical to unlock their potential in fundamental research and nanotechnology alike. 2D crystals assembled using superatomic blocks could provide a route to encrypt desirable functionality, yet strategies to link the inorganic blocks together in predetermined dimensionality or symmetry are scarce. Here, we describe the synthesis of anisotropic van der Waals crystalline frameworks using the designer superatomic nanocluster Co3(py)3Co6Se8L6 (py = pyridine, L = Ph2PN(Tol)), and ditopic linkers. Post-synthetically, the 3D crystals can be mechanically exfoliated into ultrathin flakes (8 to 60 nm), or intercalated with the redox-active guest tetracyanoethylene in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. Extensive characterization, including by single crystal X-ray diffraction, reveals how intrinsic features of the nanocluster, such as its structure, chirality, redox-activity and magnetic profile, predetermine key properties of the emerging 2D structures. Within the nanosheets, the strict and unusual stereoselectivity of the nanocluster's Co edges for the low symmetry (α,α,β) isomer gives rise to in-plane structural anisotropy, while the helically chiral nanoclusters self-organize into alternating Δ- and Λ-homochiral rows. The nanocluster's high-spin Co edges, and its rich redox profile make the nanosheets both magnetically and electrochemically active, as revealed by solid state magnetic and cyclic voltammetry studies. The length and flexibility of the ditopic linker was varied, and found to have a secondary effect on the structure and stacking of the nanosheets within the 3D crystals. With these results we introduce a deterministic and versatile synthetic entry to programmable functionality and symmetry in 2D superatomic crystals.

Abstract:Thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (denoted as Au m (SR) n or Au n L m ) have received extensive attention both experimentally and theoretically. Understanding the growth mode of the Au4 unit in Au m (SR) n is of great significance for experimental synthesis and the search for new gold clusters. In this work, we first build six clusters of Au7(AuCl2)3, Au12(AuCl2)4, Au16(AuCl2)6, Au22(AuCl2)6, and Au30(AuCl2)6 with the Au4 unit as the basic building blocks. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that these newly designed clusters have high structural and electronic stabilities. Based on chemical bonding analysis, the electronic structures of these clusters follow the superatom network (SAN) model. Inspired by the cluster structures, we further predicted an Au4 two-dimensional (2D) monolayer and a three-dimensional (3D) crystal using graphene and diamond as templates, respectively. The computational results demonstrate that the two structures have high dynamic, thermal, and mechanical stabilities, and both structures exhibit metallic properties according to the band structures calculated at the HSE06 level. The chemical bonding analysis by the solid-state natural density partitioning (SSAdNDP) method indicates that they are superatomic crystals assembled by two electron Au4 - superatoms. With this construction strategy, the new bonding pattern and properties of Au n L m are studied and the structure types of gold are enriched.

Abstract:Self-assembly processes, while promising for enabling the fabrication of complexly organized nanomaterials from nanoparticles, are often limited in creating structures with multiscale order. These limitations are due to difficulties in practically realizing the assembly processes required to achieve such complex organizations. For a long time, a hierarchical assembly attracted interest as a potentially powerful approach. However, due to the experimental limitations, intermediate-level structures are often heterogeneous in composition and structure, which significantly impacts the formation of large-scale organizations. Here, we introduce a two-stage assembly strategy: DNA origami frames scaffold a coordination of nanoparticles into designed 3D nanoclusters, and then these clusters are assembled into ordered lattices whose types are determined by the clusters' valence. Through modulating the nanocluster architectures and intercluster bindings, we demonstrate the successful formation of complexly organized nanoparticle crystals. The presented two-stage assembly method provides a powerful fabrication strategy for creating nanoparticle superlattices with prescribed unit cells.

Organoamine-induced isomerism of calixarene-based complexes: from 1D to 2D

Abstract:Two isomers of the calixarene-based cobalt complex [Co4Cl(TC4A)(BCPT)2]- (H4TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene; H2BCPT = 3,5-bis (4'-carboxy-phenyl)-1,2,4-triazole) were obtained under the solvothermal conditions with tetramethylammonium/tetraethylammonium hydroxide (CIAC-236) and triethylamine (CIAC-237). Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that CIAC-236 has a 1D zigzag aggregate constructed by bridging the shuttlecock-like Co4-TC4A secondary building units (SBUs) with two pairs of opposite V-shaped BCPT ligands while CIAC-237 possesses a 2D layer assembly with each Co4-TC4A SBU bonded by four BCPT ligands in a same direction (clockwise or counterclockwise), which indicates that different shapes of the organoamines lead to different assembly of the BCPT ligands and the formation of different extended aggregates. For comparison, only the 1D structure ([Fe4Cl(TC4A)](BCPT)2]-, CIAC-238) was obtained for the iron complexes with all these three organoamines, which would be attributed to different property and coordination of iron element. Magnetic properties of all these three compounds were studied.

Abstract:The supramolecular chemistry of nanoclusters is a flourishing area of nano-research; however, the controllable assembly of cluster nano-building blocks in different arrays remains challenging. In this work, we report the hierarchical structural complexity of atomically precise nanoclusters in micrometric linear chains (1D array), grid networks (2D array) and superstructures (3D array). In the crystal lattice, the Ag-29(SSR)(12)(PPh3)(4) nanoclusters can be viewed as unassembled cluster dots (Ag-29-0D). In the presence of Cs+ cations, the Ag-29(SSR)(12) nano-building blocks are selectively assembled into distinct arrays with different oxygen-carrying solvent molecules-Cs@Ag-29(SSR)(12)(DMF)(x) as 1D linear chains (Ag-29-1D), Cs@Ag-29(SSR)(12)(NMP)(x) as 2D grid networks (Ag-29-2D), and Cs@Ag-29(SSR)(12)(TMS)(x) as 3D superstructures (Ag-29-3D). Such self-assemblies of these Ag-29(SSR)(12) units have not only been observed in their crystalline state, but also in their amorphous state. Due to the diverse surface structures and crystalline packing modes, these Ag-29-based assemblies manifest distinguishable optical absorptions and emissions in both solutions and crystallized films. Furthermore, the surface areas of the nanocluster crystals are evaluated, the maximum value of which occurs when the cluster nano-building blocks are assembled into 2D arrays (i.e. Ag-29-2D). Overall, this work presents an exciting example of the hierarchical assembly of atomically precise nanoclusters by simply controlling the adsorbed molecules on the cluster surface.
Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of Chain-like Cobalt Assemblies

Abstract:Chain-like cobalt assemblies were successfully prepared by the solvothermal method using CoCl2·4H20 and N2H4·H2O as raw materials, and cetyltrimethylamonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant. Microstructure and morphology of the prepared products has been characterized by means of transmission electron microscopy(TEM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and selected area electron diffraction(SAED) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). The results showed the assemblies have chain-like apparent structure with a length of up to several micrometers. The individual sub-microspheres had a diameter of 400–800 nm. Magnetic hysteresis measurement revealed that the chain-like Co assemblies displayed ferromagnetic behaviors with a saturation magnetization of 163.76 emu/g and a coercivity of 104.20 Oe at room temperature. The mechanism of the formation of chain-like Co particles was also simply investigated.

Abstract:Synthesis of monodisperse Cobalt nanocrystals by high temperature diol reduction methods in the presence oleic acid and triocethylphosphine stabilizers were reported.The mean size of the Co nanocrystals is about 14±19nm and a standard deviation of the diameter is less than 2%.The structure and the surface valency state of the Co nanocrystals were measured by XRD,Uv-vis,XPS and TEM.The monodisperse Cobalt nanocrystals can be assembled to form a two-dimensional hexagonal close-packed structure.

Abstract:Molecular self-assembly is pivotal for the formation of ordered nanostructures, yet the structural diversity obtained by the use of a single type of building block is limited. Multicomponent coassembly, utilized to expand the architectural space, is principally based on empirical observations rather than rational design. Here we report large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of the coassembly of diphenylalanine (FF) and triphenylalanine (FFF) peptides at various mass ratios. Our simulations show that FF and FFF can co-organize into both canonical and noncanonical assemblies. Strikingly, toroid nanostructures, which were rarely observed for the extensively studied FF or FFF, are often seen in the FF-FFF coassembly simulations and later corroborated by scanning electron microscopy. Abstract:Parastichy, the spiral arrangement of plant organs, is an example of the long-range apparent order seen in biological systems. These ordered arrangements provide scientists with both an aesthetic challenge and a mathematical inspiration. Synthetic efforts to replicate the regularity of parastichy may allow for molecular-scale control over particle arrangement processes. Here we report the packing of a supramolecular truncated cuboctahedron (TCO) into double-helical (DH) nanowires on a graphite surface with a non-natural parastichy pattern ascribed to the symmetry of the TCOs and interactions between TCOs. Such a study is expected to advance our understanding of the design inputs needed to create complex, but precisely controlled, hierarchical materials. It is also one of the few reported helical packing structures based on Platonic or Archimedean solids since the discovery of the Boerdijk-Coxeter helix. As such, it may provide experimental support for studies of packing theory at the molecular level.
