Abstract:The appearance of damage on metallic structures is inevitable due to complex working environments. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of these structures is critical to the safe operation of the equipment. This paper presents a non-destructive damage detection, visualization, and quantification technique based on laser-generated ultrasonics. The undamaged and damaged metallic structures are irradiated with laser pulses to produce broadband input ultrasonic waves. Damage to the structures plays the role of a nonlinear radiation source of new frequencies. Usually these new frequencies are too weak to be detected directly. Here, the state space predictive model is proposed to address the problem. Based on the recorded responses in the time domain, the state space attractors are reconstructed. Damage to the structures is shown to change the properties of the attractors. A nonlinear damage detection feature called normalized nonlinear prediction error (NNPE) is extracted from the state space to identify the changes in the attractors-and hence the damage. Furthermore, the damage is visualized and quantified using the NNPE values extracted from the entire area by using a laser scanning technique. Experimental results validate that the proposed technique is capable of detecting, visualizing and quantifying artificial damage to aluminum alloy plates and actual fatigue cracks to a twin-screw compressor body.
Ultrasonic Full Guided Wavefield for Damage Detection in Curved CFRP Parts

Abstract:Guided waves can propagate from flat plates to curved structures and carry structural health information. In this paper, an ultrasonic guided wave inspection method is proposed for detecting damages in curved parts made of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRPs), such as hat-stringer-stiffened panel. By collecting full wavefield information, we obtain the standing wave information formed by the interaction between guided waves and damage. The interaction mechanism between guided waves and damage is simulated through finite element simulation, and the wavefield curvature imaging algorithm is used to generate a damage image in the curved area. Furthermore, a specimen with delamination damages is fabricated, and full wavefield information is collected through a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). We then use the proposed imaging algorithm to detect delamination damages of different sizes. The experimental results were consistent with the simulation results, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method. Notably, the technology combines the advantages of guided waves and SLDV, which can obtain full wavefield information without contact, including damage-related characteristics. This work provides a convenient and comprehensive method for collecting wavefield information on complex curved CFRP parts for structural health monitoring, which would significantly improve quality control for CFRP components in various fields.
Quantitative Detection of Surface Defect Using Laser-Generated Rayleigh Wave with Broadband Local Wavenumber Estimation

Abstract:Laser ultrasonic technology has been widely used in surface defect detection attribute to its non-contact, non-destructive and high spatial resolution characteristics. This paper proposes a surface defect quantitative detection method using laser-generated Rayleigh wave with broadband local wavenumber estimation. In this method, considering the broadband characteristics of laser-generated Rayleigh wave, the broadband local wavenumber estimation is presented to achieve the defect imaging accurately, and then the defect geometric parameters are estimated based on image segmentation. A surface defect detection experiment using the laser ultrasonic detection system is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed method has superior imaging effect for vertical and inclined defects than the standing wave energy method or reflected wave energy method. Besides, the geometric parameters such as length, width, and inclination angle of a surface defect can be accurately identified by the proposed method, the errors of vertical defects are 1.6% in length and 4.0% in width respectively, as well as the maximum and minimum error of inclined defects are 5.0% and 1.28% in inclination angle respectively. The research results provide a potential application for the fast and non-destructive surface defect detection of metal structures.
Damage detection in thick steel beam using lamb waves

Abstract:Different from the mostly concerned Lamb wave-based damage detection for thin plates, this paper presents a diagnosis procedure on thick steel beams with thickness of 34 mm. The diagnosis strategy and specimens were first described, and some parameters, such as the frequency and the number of cycles of the diagnostic waveform, were discussed. Based on finite element method (FEM) simulation, the experiment configuration was addressed, results from which show good similarity between the outcomes from the simulations and those from the experiments. Wavelet transform was further used to process the acquired Lamb wave signals for the purpose of damage detection and localization. Meanwhile, the velocity of the Lamb waves was calculated, illustrating that the fundamental anti-symmetric (A(0)) Lamb wave mode was excited in this case. The results demonstrate that Lamb waves can also be applied to some thick structures for the purpose of structural health monitoring.

Abstract:Metal structural plates are extensively used in various engineering structures due to their high strength, high-temperature resistance, toughness, and plasticity. However, they are susceptible to damage from external loads and impacts over time. The current Lamb wave detection methods suffer from dispersion and multimodal effects, leading to ineffective identification of damage information. In this paper, we investigate Lamb wave propagation in steel structure plates with flat-bottomed holes using a sinusoidal modulation five-peak wave signal. Finite element numerical models are developed, and an experimental platform is constructed using steel and aluminum boards. Experimental data is collected using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV, PSV-500, Polytec Inc., Baden-Württemberg, German). The results demonstrate that, under the same frequency, the damage reflection energy for different modes is distinct. By fusing the data from the two modes, more accurate damage imaging results are obtained in the frequency-wavenumber (f-k) domain compared to single-mode imaging. Furthermore, experiments are conducted to locate damage in a steel board with a through hole and an aluminum plate with double flat-bottomed holes, confirming the feasibility of the proposed algorithm in isotropic plates.

Abstract:Ultrasonic Lamb wave is a promising tool for structural health monitoring and nondestructive evaluation of plate-like structures. Using an array with several piezoelectric discs for damage imaging (i.e. visual detection and localization) is of interest. Commonly used delay-and-sum method is limited for overlapped signals when several damages are closely distributed in the structure. To overcome this limitation, modal-based sparse reconstruction imaging method is applied for adjacent damages in this study. Firstly, Lamb wave dispersion curve is obtained by solving the Rayleigh-Lamb equations. Subsequently, propagation modal of the damage-reflected signal is constructed based on the solved dispersion curve. Finally, the modal is used for damage imaging via sparse reconstruction and basis pursuit de-noising. Experimental data measured in an aluminum plate is considered, and the result demonstrates that the sparse reconstruction imaging method is effective to detect and localize closely distributed damages in the presence of signal overlapping.

Abstract:Among nondestructive damage testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques, the Lamb wave based methods have shown great potential for fast damage detection in plate-like structures. In order to develop Lamb waves based NDE methods, we firstly study the signal processing methods to find a good time-frequency representation (TFR) for Lamb waves. Then, a multistage damage detection method without baseline is proposed for accurate damage detection. The method utilizes the same PZT configuration and data processing techniques in all stages and results from previous stages contribute to the improvement of damage detection in next stages.
Thin Copper Plate Defect Detection Based on Lamb Wave Generated by Pulsed Laser in Combination with Laser Heterodyne Interference Technique

Abstract:Thin copper plate is widely used in architecture, transportation, heavy equipment, and integrated circuit substrates due to its unique properties. However, it is challenging to identify surface defects in copper strips arising from various manufacturing stages without direct contact. A laser ultrasonic inspection system was developed based on the Lamb wave (LW) produced by a laser pulse. An all-fiber laser heterodyne interferometer is applied for measuring the ultrasonic signal in combination with an automatic scanning system, which makes the system flexible and compact. A 3-D model simulation of an H62 brass specimen was carried out to determine the LW spatial-temporal wavefield by using the COMSOL Multiphysics software. The characteristics of the ultrasonic wavefield were extracted through continuous wavelet transform analysis. This demonstrates that the A0 mode could be used in defect detection due to its slow speed and vibrational direction. Furthermore, an ultrasonic wave at the center frequency of 370 kHz with maximum energy is suitable for defect detection. In the experiment, the size and location of the defect are determined by the time difference of the transmitted wave and reflected wave, respectively. The relative error of the defect position is 0.14% by averaging six different receiving spots. The width of the defect is linear to the time difference of the transmitted wave. The goodness of fit can reach 0.989, and it is in good agreement with the simulated one. The experimental error is less than 0.395 mm for a 5 mm width of defect. Therefore, this validates that the technique can be potentially utilized in the remote defect detection of thin copper plates.
Width and Depth Gauging of Rectangular Subsurface Defects Based on All-Optical Laser-Ultrasonic Technology

Abstract:In this paper, the width and depth of rectangular surface-breaking defects were successfully gauged using an all-optical laser-ultrasonic system. The finite element method was used to simulate propagating paths of defect-induced reflected and transmitted Rayleigh waves. It is observed that most Rayleigh waves with wavelengths less than the depth of the defect are reflected by the defect. A small part of the Rayleigh waves with wavelengths greater than the depth of the defect directly transmits through the bottom edge of the defect without acting on the left edge of the defect. Based on the simulation results, a three-step detection method of width and depth gauging of rectangular surface-breaking defects is proposed. In the first step, the pulsed laser and detection laser are irradiated on one side of the defect. In the second step, the sample is moved to a certain distance to ensure that both lasers reach the other side of the defect. In the third step, two lasers are irradiated on both sides of the defect. The width and depth of the defect are calculated according to the arrival time of the incident, reflected, and transmitted Rayleigh waves, as well as the movement distance of the sample. Experimental results are consistent with the reference-results measured by using a digital microscope. The proposed three-step detection method is proved to be feasible in simultaneous measurement of the width and depth of rectangular surface-breaking defects. Furthermore, it may be potentially useful for measuring other types of defect structures.

Abstract:Thin-walled metallic structures produced by the Directed Energy Deposition (DED) Additive Manufacturing (AM) process are prone to various fabrication defects, which hinder the wider applications of the technique in practice. In-situ inspection and monitoring methodologies are in high demand for improved quality control of printed parts. This paper presents an ultrasonic guided-wave-based method and a prototype that can potentially be used for in-situ inspection of thin-walled structures produced by DED. Lamb waves are excited by a Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoelectric transducer bonded on the DED substrate remotely from the thin wall. The substrate works as a waveguide to transmit the waves which then propagate along the thin wall. A non-contact laser vibrometer is applied to measure the guide wave signals by scanning the surface of the thin wall. The mechanisms of guided wave generation and propagation along the substrate and printed part are theoretically studied. It allows for choosing proper inspection parameters to enhance the measurement sensitivity of guided waves and help interpret the signals for defect detection. Experiments were conducted with DED-produced stainless steel (316L) thin-walled structure. The new method is demonstrated in one example to detect and localize a small defect caused by inconsistent powder delivery of a fabricated thin wall sample, via analysing the B-scan ultrasonic guided wave signals. The new technique provides strong potential for in-situ online monitoring of the DED process.

Abstract:The Lamb wave technique has been widely used for damage detection in plate-like structures. However, for two-dimensional (2D) defects like corrosions or one-dimensional (1D) defects like cracks, conventional Lamb wave-based methodology usually selects the detection algorithm in terms of the damage type, which is restricted if the defect remains unknown. To address the issues, this paper proposes a damage assessment approach based on the Lamb wave factorization method, which is a general method that can adapt to the detection of both 2D and 1D defects. In the process, both the forward-scattered wave across the inspection area and the wave back-scattered from the defect are used for detection, so that the enclosed rich information can be fully exploited. To measure the wave field of defect, a transducer array is firstly set around the inspection area, whose transducers would take turns to excite the Lamb wave while others remain listeners. On the basis, the scattered waves of all directions are then extracted and transformed from the time domain to frequency domain. Under a certain frequency, the inspection area is next visualized by sampling the area and solving the inverse scattering problem using the spectral data at each sampling point. By fusing the results of different frequency together, the final image can be eventually obtained. The method is then numerically investigated and also validated through experiments. The results demonstrate that it can give out the outline description of 2D defect and the size evaluation of 1D defect accurately, thus being an effective tool for damage assessment.

Abstract:For laser ultrasound in the thermoelastic mechanism, excitation of ultrasonic body wave signal is weak, it is not easy to realize the detection of deep defects inside the workpiece. While the ablation mechanism produces a high and practical ultrasonic signal-to-noise ratio, this paper is based on the generation mechanism of laser ablation excitation of ultrasonic waves, the establishment of laser ultrasound in the ablation mechanism in the aluminum plate excitation and propagation of ultrasonic numerical model, through the solution, obtained the ultrasonic acoustic field map, discussed the ablation mechanism of the laser ultrasonic body wave acoustic field directionality. Additionally, the preliminary verification of the validity of the model is presented. Then, in order to explore the application potential of high signal-to-noise ratio longitudinal waves in defect detection, defects of different depths are preset in the model for simulation calculations, and waveform and acoustic field analyses are performed on the simulation results to study the ultrasonic propagation paths inside the member and the interaction with the defects, and the transverse position and depth of the internal defects are judged by using B-scan imaging. Finally, experimental validation is carried out. The experimental results are highly consistent with the simulation model, and the defect experiments can qualitatively determine the location of internal defects and verify the practicality and accuracy of the model.

Enhanced wavefield imaging method for impact damage detection in composite laminates via laser-generated Lamb waves

Abstract:Full wavefield processing techniques are promising for damage detection and imaging. However, the high measuring requirements in space are labor-consuming. To improve the imaging quality of wavefields with limited scanning points, 2D interpolation methods are investigated with simulating wavefields. To detect the defects, a damage index called first-to-residual energy ratio (FRER) is introduced with considering the amplitude signatures of the first arrived Lamb waves and the residual wave components. It shows a remarkable sensitivity to the barely visible impact damage (BVID). Besides, to further improve the damage imaging resolution, a data fusion technique is employed by multiplying the sub-frequency features extracted from the broadband Lamb waves. Hence, the implicit information of broadband Lamb waves can be efficiently used. Finally, an experimental investigation was carried out on a T300 composite laminate with artificial impact damage. The results verified the efficiency of the proposed method.

Nondestructive Testing Method Based on Lamb Waves for Localization and Extent of Damage

Abstract:Based on Lamb wave analysis of propagation in plate-like structures, a damage detection method is proposed that not only locates the position of the damage accurately but also estimates its size. Similar damage detection methods focus only on localization giving no quantitative estimation of extent. To improve detection, we propose two predictive circle methods for size estimation. Numerical simulations and experiments were performed for an aluminum plate with a hole. Two PZT configurations of different sizes were designed to excite and detect Lamb waves. From cross-correlation analysis, the damage location and extent can be determined. Results show that the proposed method enables a better quantitative resolution in detection, the size of the inspection area influences the accuracy of damage identification, and the closer is the inspected area to the damage, the more accurate are the results. The method proposed can be developed into a multiple-step detection method for multi-scale analysis with prospective accuracy.
Damage Identification in Thick Steel Beam Based on Guided Ultrasonic Waves

Abstract:Most current studies of guided-wave-based damage detection have been conducted on thin plate-like structures. This article presents a study of damage identification based on activated ultrasonic waves in a thick steel beam. The diagnosis procedure, with key parameters such as excitation frequency and cycle number of the diagnostic waveform, is elaborated in relation to beam dimension as well as pulse-echo/pitch-catch configurations of PZT active sensors attached to the beam. Finite element simulation was conducted to characterize wave propagation in the beam, and the signals of wave propagation were experimentally measured; the results show good agreement with outcomes of the simulation. To aid damage identification, the group velocity of the guided wave was calculated using the envelope of the signal, which was obtained by Hilbert transform. The results for damage location and severity assessment demonstrate that the guided-wave-based damage identification approach can also be applied to certain thick structures for the purpose of structural health monitoring.
Damage Imaging Identification of Honeycomb Sandwich Structures Based on Lamb Waves

Abstract:In the field of structural health monitoring, Lamb Wave has become one of the most widely used inspection tools due to its advantages of wide detection range and high sensitivity. In this paper, a new damage detection method for honeycomb sandwich structures based on frequency spectrum and Lamb Wave Tomography is proposed. By means of simulation and experiment, a certain number of sensors were placed on the honeycomb sandwich plate to stimulate and receive the signals in both undamaged and damaged cases. By Lamb Wave Tomography, the differences of signals before and after damage were compared, and the damage indexes were calculated. Furthermore, the probability of each sensor path containing damage was analyzed, and the damage image was finally realized. The technology does not require analysis of the complex multimode propagation properties of Lamb Wave, nor does it require understanding and modeling of the properties of materials or structures. In both simulation and experiment, the localization errors of the damage conform to the detection requirements, thus verifying that the method has certain feasibility in damage detection.

Detection of Delamination using Laser-generated Lamb waves with Improved Wavenumber Analysis

Abstract:Delamination is a typical failure mode in multilayered materials, which may potentially threaten the safety and reliability of the materials if not detected promptly. This paper proposes a novel quantitative detection method for delamination in multilayered materials based on laser-generated Lamb waves with improved wavenumber analysis. First, a three-dimensional(3D) finite element model is established to simulate the interaction between delamination and laser-generated Lamb waves. The propagation characteristics of Lamb waves in multilayered materials without defects and with delamination of three different shapes, i.e., rectangular, circular and triangular are analyzed. And the mechanism that delamination can lead to the appearance of scattered wave and new wavenumber components is investigated, facilitating the quantitative detection of delamination. Then, an improved wavenumber analysis method for quantitative detection of delamination is proposed. The new wavenumber components caused by delamination are extracted by broadband adaptive wavenumber filtering to reduce imaging interference and artifacts caused by irrelevant components, and the spatial wavenumber spectrum is obtained by fast broadband local wavenumber estimation algorithm to enhance the delamination imaging accuracy and spatial resolution. The experimental results indicate that, across various experimental scenarios, the proposed method achieves superior imaging precision compared to traditional wavenumber filtering or local wavenumber estimation methods, and can quantitatively identify delamination defects of various shapes and sizes.

Abstract:Ultrasonic Lamb waves have been proved useful for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) due to their abilities to propagate a long distance with less energy loss as well as their high sensitivity to small defects on the surface or inside the structure. However, there are still many challenging tasks for Lamb wave based NDE due to the complexity involved with Lamb waves propagation and the complexity caused by coupling layer used in traditional contact-type transducers. This paper established a fully non-contact Lamb wave NDE system by using a non-contact air-coupled transducer (ACT) which can eliminate the need for couplant/adhesive and actuate pure fundamental A0 mode Lamb wave; and a non-contact scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV) for sensing which can provide high spatial resolution wavefield data. Through ACT, pure A0 mode was actuated at selected ACT incident angle based on Snell’s law. By SLDV sensing, multi-dimensional wavefields for one-dimensional or two-dimensional wave propagation were obtained and further used for Lamb waves’ characterization analysis. A specimen with a through-thickness crack was manufactured and adopted to evaluate the inspection capability of the ACT-SLDV system. Waves with normal incident and aligned incident w.r.t the longitudinal dimension of the crack were investigated, and our results showed that cracks were detected successfully in both cases. Moreover, crack lengths can be quantitatively evaluated for both situations with 10% error.

Abstract:Lamb waves provide sensitive and effective approach for nondestructive inspection of large‐scale composite structures. Traditionally in Lamb wave‐based damage detection systems, the piezoelectric (PZT) wafer transducers are attached on the surface of composite components. However, surface‐bonded PZT wafers are fragile, and they may lose serviceability when external load happens. In this paper, numerical and theoretical investigations are firstly carried out to analyze the Lamb wave features generated by PZT wafers that are located in the mid‐thickness of a thin‐walled plate. Subsequently, the authors integrate the PZT wafer arrays in woven glass fiber reinforced epoxy (WGF/epoxy) laminates with stacking sequence of [90°/0°]4. It is found that the approximate single S0 Lamb wave mode is generated by the built‐in PZT wafers. This makes the received signals very simple and easy to be interpreted. Utilizing the signals obtained by the built‐in and surface‐bonded PZT wafer transmitter‐receiver arrays, damage localization algorithms that considered the slowness profiles are compiled to help locating the defects. The compared results demonstrate that the built‐in PZT strategy has great potential for quantitative non‐destructive evaluation of composite structures.

Abstract:Laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) technology is one of the most powerful techniques in the field of non-destructive testing (NDT) or structural health monitoring (SHM). Contactless excitation, multimode-guided wave generation, and rapid detection of various structures are its main advantages. The optical LUT method has the advantages of high detection bandwidth, controllable laser power, and less likely to cause secondary damage to the material under test. Moreover, it can adaptively adjust the optical path according to the structural characteristics of the actual material under test to meet the detection requirements. Therefore, this type of LUT has gained more and more attention in recent years. This paper introduces the LUT and its advantages, and briefly summarizes the different types of optical method LUT systems. Categorized examples are given to illustrate the mainstream methods of LUT in the industry as well as specific cases, and an outlook on the direction of development is given. This paper has a certain reference value for the latter research on LUT.
