Abstract:Statement of problem: The loss in the retentive capability of implant-supported overdenture attachments has been related to the wear of the retentive inserts. Wear of the abutment coating material when following the replacement period for the retentive inserts requires investigation. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the changes in retentive force of 3 polyamide and a polyetheretherketone denture attachments under repeated insertion and removal cycles in wet conditions while following their manufacturers' replacement time recommendations. Material and methods: Four different denture attachments (LOCKiT, OT-Equator, Ball attachment, and Novaloc) with their retentive inserts were tested. Four implants were embedded into individual acrylic resin blocks, and 10 abutments for each attachment were used. Forty metal housings with their retentive inserts were attached to polyamide screws with autopolymerizing acrylic resin. A customized universal testing machine was used to simulate insertion and removal cycles. The specimens were mounted on a second universal testing machine at 0, 540, 2700, and 5400 cycles, and the maximum retentive force was recorded. The retentive inserts for LOCKiT (light retention), OT-Equator (soft retention), and Ball attachment (soft retention) were replaced every 540 cycles, while the Novaloc (medium retention) attachments were never replaced. All the abutments were weighed with a precision scale at 0, 2700, and 5400 cycles. The surface of every abutment was examined under a stereomicroscope at ×10 magnification. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare the mean retentive force and mean abutment mass of all groups and time evaluation points. Bonferroni corrections were made to adjust for multiple tests (α=.05). Results: The mean retention loss for LOCKiT was 12.6% after 6 months and 45.0% after 5 years of simulated use. The mean retention loss for OT-Equator was 16.0% after 6 months and 50.1% after 5 years of simulated use. The mean retention loss for Ball attachment was 15.3% after 6 months and 39.1% after 5 years of simulated use. The mean retention loss for Novaloc was 31.0% after 6 months and 59.1% after 5 years of simulated use. The mean abutment mass difference was statistically significant (P<.05) for LOCKiT and Ball attachment but not statistically significant (P>.05) for OT-Equator and Novaloc at baseline, 2.5 years, and 5 years. Conclusions: All tested attachments recorded retention loss under the experimental conditions, even when their manufacturers' recommendations for replacement time for the retentive inserts were followed. Patients should be aware that implant abutments should be replaced after a recommended period since their surfaces also change over time.
Wear Resistance of 3D Printed and Prefabricated Denture Teeth Opposing Zirconia

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the wear resistance of a recently developed three-dimensional (3D) printed denture teeth resin compared to three commercially available prefabricated denture teeth. Materials and methods: A total of 88 maxillary first molar denture teeth were evaluated: C (Classic; Dentsply Sirona, York, PA), DCL (SR Postaris DCL; Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), IPN (Portrait IPN; Dentsply Sirona, York, PA), and F (Denture Teeth A2 Resin 1 L; Formlabs, Somerville, MA). The 3D printed denture tooth specimens were fabricated from a methacrylate-based photopolymerizing resin using stereolithography (SLA). Denture teeth were subjected to a three-body wear test with a poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) abrasive slurry. A Leinfelder-style four station wear apparatus with custom bullet-shaped milled zirconia styli was utilized with a load force of 36-40 N at 1.7 Hz for 200,000 cycles. Maximum depth of wear was measured using a lab grade scanner and analyzing software program. Data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey's Multiple Comparisons post hoc test (α = 0.05). Results: A statistically significant difference in depth of wear was found between denture tooth materials (p < 0.001). The mean vertical depth of wear for the 3D printed denture teeth (0.016 ± 0.010 mm) was statistically significantly less than the prefabricated denture teeth. The highly cross-linked denture teeth, DCL (0.036 ± 0.011 mm) and IPN (0.035 ± 0.014 mm), exhibited statistically significantly less wear than the conventional acrylic denture teeth. The conventional acrylic denture teeth demonstrated the greatest wear (0.058 ± 0.014 mm). No significant difference in depth of wear was found between DCL and IPN (p > 0.001). Conclusions: Denture tooth material significantly influences the depth of wear. The 3D printed denture teeth demonstrated superior wear resistance compared to the commercially available prefabricated denture teeth when opposed to zirconia. Denture teeth fabricated with SLA technology may have a promising future in prosthetic dentistry.
Wear resistance of CAD/CAM one-piece screw-retained hybrid-abutment-crowns made from different restorative materials

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of this study was to measure the wear progress of three high performance polymers (HPP) materials as well as that of zirconia after artificial aging (simulated 2.5- and 5-year of clinical service with thermo-mechanical loading) and compare it with the well-documented wear of lithium disilicate. Methods: Forty implants were used to restore a maxillary first premolar, where the abutment and the crown were manufactured as hybrid-abutment-crown and connected to the implant using a titanium insert. The implants were randomly divided, according to the restorative materials used, into five groups: 3Y-TZP zirconia (Z), lithium disilicate (L), ceramic-reinforced polyetheretherketon (P), nano-hybrid composite resin (C) and polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network (E). All hybrid-abutment-crowns were produced using CAD/CAM technology. A design of a maxillary first premolar was created with an angle of 120° between the buccal and palatal cusps, which were designed as planes. The restorations were adhesively luted onto the titanium inserts, according to the manufacturers' recommendations for each material individually, by means of dual-curing luting resin with the exception of group P, where the blocks were pre-fitted (heat-pressed) with an integrated titanium insert. The suprastructures were assembled onto the implants through titanium screws. The screw channels were sealed with Teflon tape and composite resin filling material that was polished to high-gloss. All specimens underwent 1 200 000 thermo-dynamic loading cycles with 49 N in a dual-axis chewing simulator. Elastomeric impressions were made for all specimens after 600 000 and after 1 200 000 cycles. The corresponding impressions were imaged using a laser scanning microscope and then 3D-analyzed using the software (Geomagic Wrap) to measure the volume loss of the wear area for all specimens. Statistical analysis was performed using Wilcoxon-Test regarding the two different time measurements for each material. For the analysis of the material variable, Kruskal-Wallis test was conducted followed by Mann-Whitney test. Results: Group Z showed statistically the lowest volume loss compared to the other test materials, both after 600 000 and 1 200 000 cycles of artificial aging, with a median value of 0.002 mm3 volume loss after 1 200 000 cycles. In contrast, group E showed the highest volume loss with median values of 0.18 and 0.3 mm3 after 600 000 and 1 200 000 cycles, respectively. Artificial aging had significantly negative effect on the volume loss for all test materials. In addition, the choice of material had statistical influence on the outcome. Conclusion: Monolithic zirconia ceramic demonstrated lower wear than that reported for enamel after simulated 5-year of clinical service, whereas all other test materials showed higher volume loss after artificial aging.
Comparison of mechanical properties and color stability of various vacuum-formed orthodontic retainers: An in vitro study

Abstract:Vacuum-formed retainer (VFR) is the most used retainer due to its higher aesthetic properties and lower cost, their mechanical properties of are important in determining the stability and long-term use of appliances made out of them. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the flexural modulus, surface hardness, and color stability of three different VFR materials. Methods: Three different VFR materials, namely Duran, Keystone, and Zendura, of 1 mm thickness, were tested after thermoforming for flexural modulus, hardness, and color stability. They were formed over a stainless-steel model of 12 mm diameter and 6 mm height. Results: There were significant statistical differences (p = 0.000) in the flexural modulus and hardness of the three materials. Regarding color stability, Zendura exhibited significantly higher ΔE* values than Keystone and Duran (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Zendura had the highest flexural modulus and hardness compared with Duran and Keystone; however, it is more susceptible to color change compared to the other tested materials.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate whether oral cleansing agents affect the essential work of fracture (EWF) and plastic work of fracture (PWF) for two types of orthodontic thermoplastic retainer materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS Polyethylene-terephthalate-glycol (PETG; Tru-Tain Splint) and polypropylene/ethylene-propylene rubber (PP-EPR) blend (Essix-C+) sheets were compared. For each material, six sets of 25 sheets were thermoformed into double-edge-notched-tension specimens; subsets of five specimens were formed with internotch distances (L) equal to 6, 8, 10, 12, or 14 mm, respectively. Sets were stored (160 hours, 25 degrees C) in air (DRY), distilled water (DW), Original Listerine (LIS), mint Crest ProHealth (CPH), 3% hydrogen peroxide (HP), or Polident solution (POL). Specimens were fractured in tension at 2.54 mm/min. Areas under load-elongation curves were measured to determine total work of fracture (W(f)). Linear regressions (W(f) vs L [n = 25]) yielded intercepts (EWF) and slopes (PWF). Ninety-five percent confidence intervals were used to evaluate differences in EWF and PWF estimates. RESULTS PP-EPR blends showed higher EWFs after storage in HP vs storage in DW. PP-EPR blend showed higher EWFs after storage in CPH vs PETG. After HP storage, PP-EPR exhibited lower PWFs than with any other storage conditions. PP-EPR exhibited higher PWFs than PETG after storage in DRY, DW, and LIS. CONCLUSIONS Compared with DW, none of the cleansers decreased the energy to initiate fracture. With one exception, no cleanser decreased the energy to continue plastic fracture extension. In PP-EPR blend, increased resistance to fracture initiation was observed with CPH and HP, yet, surprisingly, HP decreased resistance to plastic fracture growth.

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The connector height and retainer occlusal thickness of fixed partial dentures (FPDs) may affect restoration longevity.PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine and compare the fracture resistance of 4-unit monolithic 5% yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (5Y-TZP) FPDs made with different connector heights and retainer occlusal thicknesses after thermomechanical aging.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty test metal dies were duplicated from a master metal die containing 2 anatomic abutment preparations of the mandibular right first premolar and second molar for a 4-unit FPD. The dies were divided into 2 groups of 20 each for the fabrication of 4-unit FPDs, with 2-mm and 4-mm uniform connector heights at all 3 connectors, resulting in 6.3-mm<sup>2</sup> and 12.6-mm<sup>2</sup> connector areas. Each of these groups was further divided into 2 subgroups based on the occlusal thickness of the 2 retainers of 1 mm and 2 mm (n=10). Polyvinyl siloxane impressions of the test metal dies were made and poured in Type V dental stone. Laboratory scans were performed on all the stone dies, and 40 5Y-TZP FPDs (Ceramill Zolid FX) were designed and fabricated. Subsequently, all the FPDs were luted on to the metal dies with a self-adhesive resin cement. The FPDs were preloaded (400 000 mechanical cycles; 4000 thermocycles) using a mastication simulator and tested for axial compressive strength. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to examine the effect of connector and occlusal thicknesses on the fracture load (α=.05). The data were further assessed using the post hoc Tukey HSD multiple comparison test (α=.05).RESULTS: The mean fracture load values were between 737 N and 1563 N. Significant differences in the mean fracture load were found between the connector heights (601 N; P<.001) and occlusal thicknesses (225 N; P=.002), but the interaction of the 2 factors was not significant (P=.132) The Tukey post hoc analysis showed significant differences between the connector thicknesses groups (P<.01), but the occlusal thicknesses were found to be similar for the same connector height (P=.609) CONCLUSIONS: Connector height and occlusal retainer thickness influenced the fracture load of 4-unit monolithic 5Y-TZP FPDs after thermomechanical aging.

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the two-body wear of occlusal splint materials fabricated from subtractive computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) compared to three-dimensional printing (3DP). Material and methods: Forty-eight substrates (n = 12/material) in the design of a mandibular first molar were fabricated using CAM (CAM-TD, Thermeo, pro3dure medical GmbH, Iserlohn, Germany; CAM-CL, CLEARsplint, Astron Dental Corporation, Lake Zurich, USA) and 3DP (3DP-GI, GR22 flex, pro3dure medical GmbH; 3DP-KY, KeySplint soft, Keystone Industries, Gibbstown, USA). The substrates were subjected to mastication simulation (120,000 cycles, 37 °C, 50 N, 1.3 Hz) opposed to enamel antagonists. The two-body wear was measured through matching of the scanned substrates before and after aging using Gaussian best-fit method. The damage patterns were categorized and evaluated based on microscopic examinations. Data was analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test followed by 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Pearson correlation was calculated between vertical and volumetric material loss. The failure types were analyzed with Chi2-test and Ciba Geigy table. Results: No difference in two-body wear results between all materials was found (p = 0.102). Fatigue substrates showed a perforation for CAM and a fracture for 3DP. No abrasion losses on the antagonists were detected. Conclusions: 3DP substrates showed no differences in two-body wear compared to CAM ones but are more likely to show a fracture. None of the tested materials caused an abrasion on human teeth structure. Clinical relevance: While therapies with occlusal splint materials are rising, 3DP offers a promising alternative to CAM in terms of production accuracy and therapeutic success at reduced costs.
A novel 'stop-hole' strategy to extend the fatigue life of orthodontic thermoformed retainers: an in vitro study

Abstract:ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate the potential to limit crack propagation in thermoformed retainers (TRs) and extend their fatigue life by placing a 'stop-hole'.MethodsThirty-two TRs, fabricated from 1 mm thick, round polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) blanks of ICONIC ® , underwent testing within a custom-built fatigue tester. After initial crack growth of 3 mm, the TRs were divided into three groups: a control group (C) and two experimental groups based on the stop-hole placement method. In the first experimental group, stop-holes were placed using a 1 mm round carbide bur on a slow-speed handpiece (ES), while the second group utilized a heated 1-mm-width ball-ended CPITN probe (EH). Following the placement of a stop-hole at the crack-tip, all 32 TRs resumed testing until the final crack length of 10 mm was reached.ResultsStop-hole placement significantly prolonged the delay in crack re-initiation in both experimental groups compared to the control group ( P < .001 for both). The mean re-initiation times for the ES and EH groups were 104.50 and 129.50 min, respectively, whereas the control group was 28.94 min. Consequently, this discrepancy was reflected in the total testing times, with both experimental groups requiring significantly longer time to reach the final crack length ( P < .001). There was no significant difference in the testing times between the two experimental groups.LimitationsThis is an in vitro study.ConclusionsThe stop-hole methodology significantly extended the fatigue life of a TR in a controlled laboratory environment.

Three-body wear of resin denture teeth with and without nanofillers

Abstract:Statement of problem: The wear behavior of newly developed denture teeth with nanofillers may be different from teeth with other chemical formulations. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the 3-body wear resistance of 11 different commercially available resin denture teeth. Material and methods: The materials tested were conventional (SR Orthotyp PE, Orthognath) and cross-linked acrylic resin teeth without inorganic fillers (Premium 8, SR Postaris DCL, Trubyte Portrait, Artiplus), composite resin teeth with inorganic fillers (SR Orthosit PE, Vitapan), and composite resin teeth (experimental materials) with inorganic nanofillers (NC Veracia Posterior, e-Ha, Mondial). Human enamel and a ceramic denture tooth (Lumin Vacuum) were used as reference materials. The 3-body wear test was performed in a wear machine developed by the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), with millet suspension acting as an abrasive medium (n=10, test load: 15 N, slip rate: 20%, number of cycles: 100,000). Wear was determined with the aid of a profilometer. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test using the closed testing approach (significance level for familywise error rate, alpha=.05). Results: None of the acrylic and composite resin materials tested in this study demonstrated the 3-body wear resistance of ceramic teeth or human enamel. Teeth with inorganic fillers demonstrated significantly lower wear values than conventional or cross-linked acrylic resin teeth without fillers. Composite resin teeth with traditional fillers showed significantly lower wear than composite resin teeth with nanofillers. Conclusions: Denture teeth with and without inorganic fillers differed significantly with regard to the degree of wear generated in the ACTA wear simulator. The incorporation of nanofillers did not improve the wear resistance compared to teeth with traditional fillers.
Retention and fatigue performance of modified polyetheretherketone clasps for removable prosthesis

Abstract:Purpose: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is considered as an alternative to metal material for removable partial denture (RPD). However, the retentive force is not strong as a metal RPD. This study investigated the retention and fatigue performance of PEEK clasps with different proportions of clasp arm engaging the undercut to verify a new strategy to improve their clinical performance. Methods: Three groups (n = 10/group) of PEEK clasps with their terminal 1/3, 2/3 and the whole of retentive arms engaging the undercut were fabricated along with a group (n = 10) of conventional cobalt-chrome (CoCr) clasps as control group. Retentive forces were measured by universal testing machine initially and at an interval of 1500 cycles for a total of 15,000 fatigue cycles. The fatigue cycles were conducted by repeated insertion and removal of the clasp using fatigue testing machine. Each clasp was scanned by Trios3 scanner before and after fatigue test to obtain digital models. The deformation of the clasp was evaluated by root mean square (RMS) through aligning the two models in Geomagic wrap (2021). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and finite element analysis were carried out to observe the abrasion and the von Mises stress of the clasp arm. Kruskal-Wallis H test was used to compare the retentive forces and the RMSs of the studied groups followed by Bonferroni multiple comparisons. Results: The whole of PEEK clasp arm engaging the undercut provided higher mean retentive forces (7.99 ± 2.02 N) than other PEEK clasp groups (P < 0.001) and was closer to CoCr clasps (11.88 ± 2.05 N). The RMSs of PEEK clasps were lower than CoCr clasps (P < 0.05) while the differences among PEEK clasps were of no statistical significance (P > 0.05). SEM showed that evidences of surface abrasion were observed on the section that engaged the undercut for all groups of clasps. The stress concentration mainly occurred on the initial part of the retentive arm. The maximum von Mises stress of each group was below the compressive strength of PEEK. Conclusions: Proportions of PEEK clasp arm engaging the undercut positively influenced the retentive force and the fatigue resistance of PEEK clasps was superior than CoCr clasps. It is a feasible method to improve the retention of PEEK clasps by increasing the proportion of clasp arm engaging the undercut. Clinical trials are needed to further verify this innovation.
Comparison of stress relaxation properties between 3-dimensional printed and thermoformed orthodontic aligners: A pilot study of in vitro simulation of two consecutive 8-hours force application

Abstract:Objectives: The study is aimed to examine the stress relaxation of 3d-printed aligners, Tera Hartz TC-85 (Graphy Inc. Seoul, South Korea) and Polyamide (Noxi, Sweden and Martina, Due Carrare, Padova, Italy), in comparison to thermoformed aligners, Zendura FLX (Bay Materials LLC, Fremont, California, USA) and Duran (SCHEU, Iserlohn, Germany). Material and Methods: A stress-relaxation test was conducted using a motorized vertical testing bench, TVO-S (AstraLab, Mariano Comense, Italy), applying a constant and controlled pre-set load. Each sample was subjected to a deflection of 0.5 mm while being immersed in water for eight consecutive h at a constant temperature of 37°C. During this period, data were collected at intervals of 1 s. The same test was repeated twice (test 1 and test 2) on the same specimen, in order to simulate the intermittence of deflection force. Results: For both Test 1 and Test 2, a total of 28,800 measurements were recorded for each aligner, with one measurement taken per second over a duration of 8 h/test. A statistically significant difference ( P < 0.001) was found for all materials and at all time periods were considered. If the percentage of stress relaxation is considered, a significant difference among the four aligners was found as well. Conclusion: All materials displayed substantial stress decay during the 8-h period of constant load, although significant differences were observed among the various materials under investigation. The Noxi aligner demonstrated the highest force values in both tests, confirmed by low percentages of stress relaxation ranging from 23% to 32%.

Abstract:A Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CAU 1062T, was isolated from marine sand in Jeju island, Republic of Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. CAU 1062T grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 8 in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that CAU 1062T formed a distinct lineage within the genus Tropicimonasand was the most closely related to Tropicimonas sediminicola M97T (similarity 96.11 %). The strain had ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) as the predominant respiratory quinone and C18 : 1ω7c as the major cellular fatty acid. The polar lipid pattern of CAU 1062T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, an aminolipid, six phospholipids and five lipids. The DNA G+C content was 65.7 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, CAU 1062T represents a novel species of the genus Tropicimonas, for which the name Tropicimonas arenosa sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1062T (=KCTC 52178T=NBRC 111995T).
Assessment of the Effect of Thermoforming Process and Simulated Aging on the Mechanical Properties of Clear Aligner Material

Abstract:Background Choosing the optimal aligner material on the market is crucial to ensure constant forces for tooth displacement. Processes like manufacturing and intraoral usage can result in the degradation of certain properties, which can affect the overall efficacy of treatment. Objective The objective of the study is to compare the surface roughness and flexural modulus of two aligner materials following the processes of thermoforming and aging. Materials and methods Two groups of 12 samples each were tested: Group 1 consisted of polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) and Group 2 of zendura-polyurethane (PU). The groups were tested at three time points: T0 - pre-thermoformed; T1 - after thermoforming; T2 - after thermoforming and aging. The surface roughness and the flexural modulus were evaluated. One-way ANOVA followed by a Bonferroni post hoc test was conducted to compare the changes within each group across the three times. An independent t-test was done to compare the values between the two groups at each time point. The statistical tests were performed using SPSS software version 26 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). P-values >0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results There was a significant change in the surface roughness post-aging in Group 2 (p=0.03) and flexural strength within Group 1 (p=0.031) and Group 2 (p=0.06) across the three time points. Comparing the changes within the three time points in Group 1, significant changes were observed between T0-T1 (p=0.045) and T0-T2 (p=0.07). In Group 2, significant changes were observed between T0-T2 (p=0.012). Comparing the flexural strength between the two groups, significant differences were observed at T0 (p=0.012) and T1 (p=0.001). Conclusion The aging process affected the surface roughness in Zendura (PU). The thermoforming and aging process resulted in reduced flexural strength in both Zendura (PU) and Duran groups (PET-G).
A comparison of three different methods for the quantification of the in vitro wear of dental materials

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Different approaches are utilized to quantify the wear generated on flat specimens with a wear simulator. However, there are no systematic studies comparing different wear quantification methods with a series of materials that exhibit different wear rates.METHODS: Sixteen restorative materials, including 14 composites (BelleGlass, Chromasit, Estenia, Esthet-X, Four Seasons, Heliomolar RO, Heliomolar HB, Herculite XRV, InTen-S, Point 4, SureFil, Targis cured at 95 and 130 degrees C, Tetric Ceram) as well as an amalgam (Amalcap) and a ceramic (Empress) material, were subjected to attrition wear against standardized Empress antagonists in the Willytec wear simulator (120,000 cycles, 5 kg, 1.6 Hz). The volume and maximal vertical loss were quantified directly on the specimens with a profilometry device (Perthometer) and the FRT MicroProf optical sensor. After the fabrication of plaster replicas, the loss was also determined with a 3D laser scanning device. For the statistical analysis, the data were subjected to a logarithmic transformation. Intraclass correlation was calculated to measure the agreement among all three methods, while limits of agreement were used to compare one method against another.RESULTS: There was a very good agreement between all three quantification methods for both volume and vertical loss. The mechanical sensor measured consistently higher values compared to the optical sensors for the volume loss (correction factor 0.95), whereas for the vertical loss, consistently lower values were obtained (correction factor 1.17). However, the ranking of the materials was only marginally influenced by the quantification method.SIGNIFICANCE: All three sensors are suitable for the quantification of wear facets. Due to speed and simplicity, the laser sensor has greater advantages over the two other sensors.

In Vitro Analysis of Bonding and Wear Properties of 3D Printed Denture Tooth Materials

Abstract:Purpose: While additive manufacturing (3D printing) has recently enhanced removable prosthodontics, the properties of new 3D printed materials are not well understood. This study aims to elucidate the physical properties of these materials, focusing on bonding to a 3D printed denture base material and wear resistance. Methods: For denture tooth-denture base bonding analyses, the same denture tooth material (Premium Teeth, Formlabs) was used with three denture base-bonding group assignments (n=6 each group) bonded using three protocols: Group A1 was bonded with Lucitone Digital Print-3D Denture Base using the Lucitone Fuse System (Dentsply), Group A2 with Formlabs Denture Base using the Formlabs Denture Base Bonding System, and Group A3 with Formlabs Denture Base using the Ivoclar Ivotion Bonding System (Ivoclar). Specimens were made according to the ISO-TS-19736-2027 standard. A 3D printed tooth mimicking a central incisor was bonded to the denture base and subjected to a palatal load at the incisal region at 90° from the long axis of the tooth until failure. The fracture surface was examined at 10× magnification. ANOVA with α=0.05 was used to determine statistically significant differences. For wear analysis, the same denture base material and bonding system (Lucitone Digital Print-3D Denture Base/Lucitone Fuse System, Dentsply) was used with four denture tooth material group assignments (n=8 each group): Group B1 used Formlabs Premium Teeth, Group B2 used SprintRay High Impact Denture Teeth, Group B3 used Lucitone Digital IPN Premium Tooth, and Group B4 used Ivotion Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) Milled Teeth (Ivoclar). A premolar denture tooth bonded with the denture base was subjected to a chewing simulation cyclic loading of 1,200,000 cycles. Sample failures, vertical wear, and volume loss were documented. ANOVA with α=0.05 was used to determine statistically significant differences. Results: The fracture load to failure values for A1, A2, and A3 were 175±106 N, 167±46.3 N, and 183±48.9 N, respectively (p=0.95). Most failure characteristics were mixed, except one of A2 was cohesive and half of A3 was cohesive. For cyclic loading, B4 was the only group where all specimens failed within 1,200,000 cycles, while B1, B2, and B3 had four, three, and five sample failures, respectively. Vertical wear was 0.93±0.34 mm, 1.22±0.37 mm, 1.05±0.27 mm, and 0.37±0.02 mm for B1, B2, B3, and B4, respectively (p<0.01). Abrasion volumes were 9.5±3.7 mm³, 12.2±4.7 mm³, 10.6±3.5 mm³, and 2.2±1.3 mm³ for B1, B2, B3, and B4, respectively. Vertical height loss per chewing cycle (μm/cycle) was 0.0022±0.0019, 0.0030±0.0029, 0.0012±0.00005, and 0.0080±0.0050 for B1, B2, B3, and B4, respectively (p<0.01). Abrasion volume per chewing cycle (μm³/cycle) was 17650.8±9682.9, 27263.4±24746.8, 11836.5±4200.8, and 70436.8±73602.5 for B1, B2, B3, and B4, respectively (p=0.02). Conclusion: The bonding strength and wear resistance of 3D printed denture materials vary by manufacturer. Formlabs Denture Base with Ivoclar Ivotion showed the highest fracture load, indicating superior bonding strength. In wear analysis, Ivoclar Ivotion PMMA Milled Teeth exhibited the least vertical wear and abrasion volume but had the highest failure rate under cyclic loading. While printed denture materials excel in bonding strength, their wear resistance may not be as good as milled denture teeth, highlighting the need to balance these properties in clinical applications.

Abstract:Background: New technologies have paved the way for newer fabrication techniques, such as rapid prototyping, which has gained popularity in the fabrication of several orthodontic appliances including retainers. Aim: To evaluate the stability, survival time and periodontal health associated with vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs), bonded retainers (BRs) and rapid prototype retainers (RPRs) over a period of 12 months in retention. Study design: Prospective clinical study. Methods: A total of 72 participants completing fixed orthodontic treatment were allocated to the following three groups by the investigators based upon their initial malocclusion, compliant and preferences: VFR; BR; and RPR. The primary outcome was Little's Irregularity Index (LII). Other stability parameters, including arch length (AL), inter-canine width (ICW) and inter-molar width (IMW), were also assessed immediately after debonding (T0) and 12 months (T2) after debonding. In addition, survival time, and calculus index and gingival index (GI) were assessed. Results: LII showed a significant difference (P = 0.00) between the groups and was increased in the VFR group (0.18 ± 0.22 mm) compared to the BR (0.03 ± 0.05 mm) and RPR (0.01 ± 0.03 mm) groups but was not clinically significant. The mean survival time of maxillary retainers was longest for the RPR group (220.63 days; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 194.1-247.16) but there was no significant difference between the three groups (P = 0.43). The mean survival time of mandibular retainers was higher and the same for the VFR and RPR groups (240 days; 95% CI = 240-240) and there was no significant difference between the three groups (P = 0.38). The calculus index score (P = 0.00) was statistically significant between the groups, with an increased score for the BR group (0.33 ± 0.27) compared to the VFR (0.07 ± 0.16) and RPR (0.13 ± 0.22) groups. Similarly, the GI score (P = 0.02) was statistically significant between the groups and was increased in the BR group (0.01 ± 0.19) compared to the VFR (-0.15 ± 0.18) and RPR (-0.06 ± 0.15) groups. The increase in calculus index and GI scores for the BR group were not clinically significant. Conclusion: There were no clinically significant differences between the three retainer groups in terms of stability, periodontal health and time to failure.
Fracture Resistance of Space Maintainers Produced Using 3D Printable Materials

Abstract:Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance of space maintainers (SMs) produced using 3D-printable materials (metal, resin and polyetheretherketone [PEEK]) after thermal aging and compare them with conventional space maintainers. Methods: A standardised typodont model for paediatric dentistry was utilised, and band and loop space maintainers were designed digitally using computer-aided design (CAD) technology. Four groups were established: Conventional, 3D printed metal, 3D printed resin, and 3D printed PEEK. Fracture resistance was assessed after 10,000 thermal cycles, simulating oral conditions. Fracture tests were conducted using a universal testing machine, applying vertical force to the band and loop junction until fracture. Statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test (P<0.05). Conclusion: Although the fracture resistance values showed that metal, resin, and PEEK 3D printed band and loop space maintainers can be acceptable clinically, the permanent resin may be preferable to printable material because of their aesthetic properties.
Digital wear analysis and retention of poly-ether-ether-ketone retentive inserts versus conventional nylon inserts in locator retained mandibular overdentures: in-vitro study

Abstract:Objective: this study aimed to digitally compare wear behavior and retention between PEEK and nylon retentive inserts used in locator-retained, mandibular implant overdentures when attachment design and size were standardized. Materials and methods: A total of sixty-four inserts (32 PEEK and 32 nylon inserts); were picked-up in implant overdentures. Overdentures of both groups were submerged in artificial saliva and mounted to chewing simulator. After 480,000 chewing cycles (equivalent to 2 years of clinical use) all inserts were scanned by scanning electron microscope (SEM), then all acquired images were digitally analyzed by software to detect and compare quantitative and qualitative changes of inserts in both groups. On the other hand, retention of both groups was measured by universal testing machine and the collected data was statistically analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test with significance level set at P ≤ 0.05. Results: PEEK inserts showed significantly higher mean retentive values compared to the nylon inserts in the control group. Also, PEEK retentive inserts exhibited statistically lower mean wear values than the control group P ≥ 0.000. Qualitative investigation revealed significant and more pronounced changes in the surface roughness of nylon inserts compared to PEEK ones. Conclusions: Regarding retention, wear behavior and dimension stability, PEEK can be recommended as retentive insert material in cases of locator-retained mandibular implant overdentures. Clinical relevance: PEEK inserts offer enhanced retention, reduced wear, and greater dimensional stability over two years time interval. Clinically, this reduces prosthodontic maintenance and adjustments, improving patient satisfaction and long-term prosthetic success.
