Abstract:One comprehensive emission inventory of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CH4, CO2 and N2O with high spatial reso-lution (0.01 degrees x 0.01 degrees) for 58 cities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and its surrounding areas (BTHSA) during 2000-2020 are developed by using COPERT model and ArcGIS methodology. The results show that vehicular emissions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and CH4 have begun to decrease or slow their growth rates in recent years due to the imple-mentation of measures to control vehicular emissions. However, vehicular emissions of CO2 increase rapidly due to lit-tle fuel economy improvement. Besides, the usage of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems by heavy duty truck (HDT) is the main factor impacting the growth trend of vehicular N2O emissions since 2017. By 2020, vehicular emis-sions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CO2, CH4 and N2O are estimated at about 1.65 Mt, 0.35 Mt, 1.39 Mt, 87.44 kt, 55.06 kt, 15.57 kt, 527.71 Mt, 36.20 kt and 8.56 kt, respectively. Therein, China III, IV, IV and IV passenger cars (PCs) are the predominated models for vehicular emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2, accounting for 19.59-28.26 % of the total vehicular emission of corresponding pollutant. Nevertheless, the major contributors of vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are China III (29.64 %), III (18.03 %), III (22.81 %), III (42.16 %) and V (22.28 %) HDTs, respectively. The gridded vehicular emissions vary significantly, with emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2 being mainly concentrated in central urban areas of cities (e.g., Beijing, Tangshan, Zhengzhou, Tianjin, Qingdao, Jinan). Nevertheless, the grids with high vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are mainly distributed along the expressway and the suburban roads of cities (e.g., Linyi, Tangshan, Jining, Weifang, Shijiazhuang, Tianjin, Baoding). Finally, multi-year uncertainties of vehicular emission inventory are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract. This study is the first in a series of papers that aim to develop high-resolution emission databases for different anthropogenic sources in China. Here we focus on on-road transportation. Because of the increasing impact of on-road transportation on regional air quality, developing an accurate and high-resolution vehicle emission inventory is important for both the research community and air quality management. This work proposes a new inventory methodology to improve the spatial and temporal accuracy and resolution of vehicle emissions in China. We calculate, for the first time, the monthly vehicle emissions (CO, NMHC, NOx, and PM2.5) for 2008 in 2364 counties (an administrative unit one level lower than city) by developing a set of approaches to estimate vehicle stock and monthly emission factors at county-level, and technology distribution at provincial level. We then introduce allocation weights for the vehicle kilometers traveled to assign the county-level emissions onto 0.05° × 0.05° grids based on the China Digital Road-network Map (CDRM). The new methodology overcomes the common shortcomings of previous inventory methods, including neglecting the geographical differences between key parameters and using surrogates that are weakly related to vehicle activities to allocate vehicle emissions. The new method has great advantages over previous methods in depicting the spatial distribution characteristics of vehicle activities and emissions. This work provides a better understanding of the spatial representation of vehicle emissions in China and can benefit both air quality modeling and management with improved spatial accuracy.
A Comprehensive Study on Emission of Volatile Organic Compounds for Light Duty Gasoline Passenger Vehicles in China: Illustration of Impact Factors and Renewal Emissions of Major Compounds

Abstract:Background: Many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are efficient precursors for both ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) which are problematic to environmental controls in many global cities. Vehicle emission is one of the most important anthropogenic sources for VOCs. In between, light duty gasoline passenger vehicles (LDGPVs) contributed more than half of the on-road vehicles in China, demonstrating unique emission characteristics and also significant contributions in emission inventory. Objectives: To illustrate the variation of VOCs emissions from LDGPVs under different conditions, evaluate the sensitivity of the potential influencing factors, such as emission standards, displacement, cumulative mileage, and driving mode, on the VOCs emissions profiles, and to update the emission inventory by taking into account of the most influential factor. Methods: In this study, seventy-four in-used LDGPVs were examined by the chassis dynamometer. A total of 25 VOCs in the emissions was quantified using an online time of flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS). Fuel-based emission factors (EF) were calculated. Results: The results showed that the maximum Sigma EF (260.4 +/- 241.1 mg/L) was seen for LDGPVs at a high acceleration rate (0.9 m/s(2)). From the technical control emission standard aspect, the total emission factor of VOCs (expressed as Sigma EF) was declined for China IV LDGPVs relative to China III vehicles, with the decreasing extent determined as 24.8%. Among LDGPVs with engine capacity of <1.5 L, 1.5-2.5 L and >2.5 L, it is for 1.5-2.5 L that the lowest Sigma EF (101.2 +/- 70.1 mg/L) was determined. Along with the increasing of cumulative mileage, the EF values of VOCs were uplift, and the Sigma VOCs increased almost linearity, while the increasing trend became steady for Sigma EF when the cumulative mileage more than 8 x 10(4) km. As for different driving conditions, the sequence of EFs from high to low are presented as acceleration (239.3 +/- 203.5 mg/L) >idle (226.1 +/- 195.6 mg/L) >deceleration (218.5 +/- 193.1 mg/L)>uniform (218.2 +/- 182.5 mg/L)>slide (176.1 +/- 165.2 mg/L). While the cruising speeds increased between 15 and 50 km/h, the linearity between SEF declined; however, an opposite trend was seen when the acceleration rates increased. In the chemical speciation, the reactive aromatics contributed the largest fraction of the VOCs (>40%). The ratio of benzene to toluene (B/T) was loaded in high interval (0.94-1.33) in this paper. Larger fluctuation of coefficient of variation (CV) was found among different cumulative mileage and displacement. By taking into account the deterioration effect related to cumulative mileage, emissions of butene, pentene, benzene and toluene were 42.9 Gg, 49.7 Gg, 109.6 Gg and 51.9 Gg in respect for LDGPVs that composed of China III and China IV. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated the necessaries in upgrading the emission control technology. Cumulative mileages and displacements are the two most dominated factors that impacted on the EFs and chemical profiles of VOCs. The higher emission of benzene estimated demonstrated the possible elevation of VOCs in comparison with previous studies.
Vehicular volatile organic compounds (VOCs)-NO x -CO emissions in a tunnel study in northern China: emission factors, profiles, and source apportionment

Abstract:Vehicular emission is a key contributor to ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and NO x in Chinese megacities. However, the information of real-world emission factors (EFs) for a typical urban fleet is still limited, hindering the development of a more reliable emission inventory in China. Based on a more-than-two-week (August 8–24, 2017) tunnel test in urban Tianjin in northern China, and on the use of a statistical regression model, the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) receptor model, and the Calculate Emissions from Road Transport (COPERT) IV model, characteristics of vehicular VOCs-NO x -CO emissions were analyzed systematically. The fleet-average EFs (pollutant: downslope, upslope, and overall in mg km −1 veh −1 ) were estimated respectively as follows: (NO: 61.92 ± 72.46, 158.58 ± 73.48, 97.52 ± 69.84), (NO 2 : 16.52 ± 11.49, 23.98 ± 20.14, 15.86 ± 9.38), (NO x : 79.45 ± 78.43, 181.22 ± 88.29, 116.56 ± 77.61), and (CO: 269.96 ± 342.38, 577.76 ± 382.22, 344.67 ± 250.01). The EFs of NO-NO 2 -NO x and CO from heavy-duty vehicles (or diesel vehicles) were differentiated from light-duty vehicles (or gasoline vehicles). The ratios (v / v) of NO 2 to NO x in the primary vehicular exhaust were approximately 0.18 ± 0.09, 0.10 ± 0.22 and 0.10 ± 0.05 for downslope, upslope, and the entire tunnel, respectively. The fleet-average EF of the 99-target non-methane VOCs (NMVOCs) was 40.56 ± 12.18 mg km −1 veh −1 , lower than the previous studies in China. The BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p -xylene, m -xylene and o -xylene) levels decreased by approximately 79 % when emission standards increased from China I to China V. The source profiles of NMVOCs from the tailpipe and evaporative emissions were resolved by the PMF model. The evaporative emissions accounted for nearly one-half of the total vehicular VOC emissions, indicating that evaporative and tailpipe emissions contributed equally to VOC emissions. The relative contributions of evaporative NMVOC emissions to total vehicular NMVOC emissions are temperature-dependent with the average increasing ratio of 7.55 % °C −1 . The primary emission ratio (ER, m / m) of VOCs / NO x was approximately 2.04, suggesting that vehicular NO x and VOCs can be co-emitted with a proper ER. According to the vehicular ERs of VOCs / NO x in Tianjin (2000–2016) and China (2010–2030), as even more stringent emission standards are implemented in the future, the O 3 chemical regimes were likely to be VOCs-limited (i.e., 8 : 1 threshold) for cities or regions where VOCs and NO x emissions are dominated by vehicular exhaust. Our study enriched the database on the fleet-average emission factors of on-road vehicles for emission inventory, air quality modeling, and health effects studies, provided implications for following O 3 control in China from the view of primary emission, and highlighted the importance of further control of evaporative emissions.

Abstract:Effect data collected in Tianjin City related to vehicle type,technology distribution,driving patterns,and acceleration patterns were used to estimate vehicular emissions in the city.The data provide a comprehensive analysis of the on-road vehicular emission in Tianjin.The international vehicle emissions(IVE) model was used to create the mobile emissions inventory.A preliminary analysis indicates that 52%-55% of the total emissions are from the peak emission hours.Non-catalyzed vehicles are the main sources contributing 60%-95% of the emissions.Traffic on residential roads leads to relatively high emissions.These factors should be the focus of the Tianjin vehicle emission control strategy.

Past and Future Trends of Vehicle Emissions in Tianjin, China, from 2000 to 2030

Abstract:The rapid growth of the vehicle population was regarded as an important factor that contributed to the urban air pollution in China during the past decades. We used Tianjin, a typical megacity facing vehicle pollution problems, as the study domain to investigate a comprehensive estimation of vehicle emissions, including carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), inhalable particles (PM10), carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2), from 2000 to 2030. The Computer Programme to calculate Emissions from Road Transport (COPERT) model was used to simulate the vehicle emission factors. Historical simulations show that the total emissions of CO, VOCs, NOx, PM10, CO2, and SO2 changed from 545.1 Gg, 70.04 Gg, 60.19 Gg, 6.57 Gg, 6.82 Tg and 12.88 Gg to 259.11 Gg, 34.01 Gg, 55.14 Gg, 3.42 Gg, 25.30 Tg and 0.16 Gg from 2000 to 2016, respectively. Passenger cars (PC) and light-duty vehicles (LDV) were the main contributors to the CO and VOCs emissions. Heavy-duty trucks (HDT) and buses (BUS) were the important contributors to NOx and PM10. PC was the major contributor to CO2 and SO2. With respect to the future, four Single Control Policy Scenarios (SCPS), including Passenger car Population Regulation (PPR), Emission Standard Updating (ESU), Public Transportation Promotion (PTP) and Electric Vehicle Popularity (EVP), and Integrated Scenarios (IS), were assembled to describe the impact of future policies on vehicle pollution from 2017 to 2030. Among all SCPS, the results show that the ESU is the more effective policy to control emissions of CO, NOx and PM10, while PPR is the more effective way to reduce emissions of VOCs, CO2, and SO2.
Evaporation process dominates vehicular NMVOC emissions in China with enlarged contribution from 1990 to 2016

Abstract:Abstract Non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) are important precursors of ozone and secondary organic aerosols in PM 2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters smaller than 2.5 μ m), both of which cause severe climate, ecosystem, and human health damages. As one of the major anthropogenic sources, onroad vehicles are subject to relatively large errors and uncertainties in the estimation of NMVOC emissions due to complicated methods and parameters involved and a lack of comprehensive evaluation of influencing factors. Here, based on our previous work with necessary improvement, we estimate China’s vehicular NMVOC emissions by county and by month during 1990–2016 with a consideration of meteorological influence on the spatial-temporal dynamics of emission factors. Our estimate suggests that vehicular NMVOC emissions in China have peaked around 2008 and then declined up to 2016 with an enlarged contribution of the evaporative process to vehicular NMVOC emissions. Vehicular NMVOC emissions have been dominated by the evaporative process at present. Meteorological factors alter spatial-temporal distributions of NMVOC emissions, especially evaporative emissions, which are enhanced in South China and in summer. Emissions and ozone formation potential of the major chemical groups (i.e. Alkenes, Aromatics, and Alkanes) also increase substantially due to meteorological influences. Our analysis suggests that mitigation strategies for vehicle pollutions should be designed based on a sophisticated emission inventory accounting for the meteorological impact on emission factors to correct the potential underestimation of NMVOC emissions, especially those from the evaporative process.

Abstract:In the context of clean air actions in China, vehicle emission limits have been continuously tightened, which has facilitated the reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. However, the characteristics of VOC emissions from vehicles with strict emission limits are poorly understood. This study investigated the VOC emission characteristics from vehicles under the latest standards based on tunnel measurements, and identified future control strategies for vehicle emissions. The results showed that the highest percentage of VOCs from vehicle consisted of alkanes (80.9 %), followed by aromatics (15.8 %) and alkenes (3.1 %). Alkanes had the most significant ozone formation potential due to their high concentrations, in contrast to the aromatics that have been dominant in previous studies. The measured fleet-average VOC emission factor was 71.3 mg·km −1 , including tailpipe emissions of 39.6 mg·km −1 and evaporative emissions of 31.7 mg·km −1 . The VOC emission factors of the subgroups were obtained. The emission of evaporated VOCs accounted for 44.5 % of the total vehicle VOC emissions, which have increased substantially from previous studies. In addition, the emission characteristics of vehicles that are under the latest emission threshold values have changed significantly, and the mixing ratio of toluene/benzene (T/B) has been updated to 3:1. This study updates the VOCs emission factors of vehicles under clean air actions and highlights the future mitigation policies should focus on reducing evaporative VOC emissions.

Abstract:Currently, the emission inventory of vehicular volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is one of those with the largest errors and uncertainties due to suboptimal estimation methods and the lack of first-hand basic data. In this study, an updated speciated emission inventory of VOCs and an estimation of intermediate-volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) from vehicles in China at the provincial level for the year of 2015 are developed based on a set of state-of-the-art methods and an abundance of local measurement data. Activity data for light-duty vehicles are derived from trajectories of more than 70 000 cars for 1 year. The annual mileage of trucks are calculated from reported data by more than 2 million trucks in China. The emission profiles are updated using measurement data. Vehicular tailpipe emissions (VTEs) and four types of vehicular evaporation emissions (VEEs), including refueling, hot soak, diurnal and running loss, are taken into account. Results show that the total vehicular VOC emissions in China are 4.21 Tg (with a 95 % confidence interval range from 2.90 to 6.54 Tg) and the IVOC emissions are 200.37 Gg in 2015. VTEs are still the predominant contributor, while VEEs are responsible for 39.20 % of VOC emissions. The control of VEEs is yet to be optimized in China. Among VTEs, passenger vehicles emissions have the largest share (49.86 %), followed by trucks (28.15 %) and motorcycles (21.99 %). Among VEEs, running loss is the largest contributor (81.05 %). For both VTEs and VEEs, Guangdong, Shandong and Jiangsu province are three of the highest, with a respective contribution of 10.66, 8.85 and 6.54 % to the total amounts of VOCs from vehicles. 97 VOC species are analyzed in this VOC emission inventory. i-Pentane, toluene and formaldehyde are found to be the most abundant species in China's vehicular VOC emissions. The estimated IVOCs are another inconvenient truth, concluding that precursor emissions for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from vehicles are much larger than previously estimated.
Evaluating vehicular exhaust and evaporative emissions via VOC measurement in an underground parking garage

Abstract:Vehicular emissions, including both tailpipe exhaust and evaporative emissions, are major anthropogenic sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban cities. Current knowledge on vehicle tailpipe and evaporative emissions was mainly obtained via laboratory tests on very few vehicles under experimental conditions. Information on fleet gasoline vehicles emission features under real-world conditions is lacking. Here, VOC measurement was conducted in a large residential underground parking garage in Tianjin, China, to reveal the feature of the exhaust and evaporative emissions from real-world gasoline vehicle fleets. The VOC concentration in the parking garage was on average 362.7 ± 87.7 μg m −3 , significantly higher than that in the ambient atmosphere at the same period (63.2 μg m −3 ). Aromatics and alkanes were the mainly contributors on both weekdays and weekends. A positive correlation between VOCs and traffic flow was observed, especially in the daytime. Source apportionment through the positive matrix factorization model (PMF) revealed that the tailpipe and evaporative emissions accounted for 43.2% and 33.7% of VOCs, respectively. Evaporative emission contributed 69.3% to the VOCs at night due to diurnal breathing loss from numerous parked cars. In contrast, tailpipe emission was most remarkable during morning rush hours. Based on the PMF results, we reconstructed a vehicle-related VOCs profile representing the combination of the tailpipe exhaust and evaporative emission from fleet-average gasoline vehicles, which could benefit future source apportionment studies.

Abstract:<p>The multi-scale chemical characteristics and source apportionment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analysed in Tianjin, China, using 1-hr resolution VOC-species data between November 1, 2018 and March 15, 2019. The average total VOC (TVOC) concentration was 30.6 ppbv during the heating season. The alkanes accounted for highest proportion of the TVOC, while the alkenes were the predominant species forming ozone, especially ethylene. Compared to the clean period, the concentration of acetylene during the haze events showed highest increase rate, followed by the ethane; and the concentrations and proportions of alkanes and alkenes were highest during the growth stage (GS) of haze events. The multi-scale apportionment results suggested petrochemical industry and solvent usage (PI/SU, 31.2%), vehicle emissions and liquefied petroleum gas (VE/LPG, 20.5%), and combustion emissions (CE, 19.1%) were the main VOC sources during the heating season. Compared to the clean period, the contributions of PI/SU, VE/LPG, CE, and refinery emissions notably increased during the haze events, while that of gasoline evaporation decreased. The contributions of PI/SU and RPI showed significantly increase during the GS of haze events, whereas most sources decreased during the dissipation stage of haze events. Diurnal-variations in source contributions during the haze events were clearer than the clean period, and the contributions of PI/SU, VE/LPG, and CE during the haze events were markedly higher at night. These findings provide valuable information to inform effective VOC control and prevention measures with specific relevance for the control of ozone pollution in Tianjin.</p>

Abstract:Vehicle evaporation is an essential source of VOCs in cities but is not well understood in China. Reported emission factors from previous studies are not enough for understanding the atmospheric chemical process of vehicular evaporative VOCs. In this work, a serious of detailed VOCs speciation profiles are developed based on test processes and emission processes. A mass balance method was used to divide different emission processes during diurnal tests. The results show that headspace vapor of gasoline cannot represent the real-world vehicle evaporation because of the significant differences in VOCs speciation profiles, especially for aromatics. To further distinguish emissions from evaporation and exhaust, only the ratios of MTBE/benzene and MTBE/toluene can serve as indicators when considering species from all evaporative processes. Besides, emissions from different sources change significantly with the seasons. To solve these problems, we developed a monthly comprehensive evaporation speciation profile. The individual profiles at the emission processes are weighted by the emission of the in-use vehicle fleet in Beijing to derive the comprehensive speciation profile of evaporative VOCs. Ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol potential (SOAP) were used to evaluate the environmental impact. For SOAP, 100 g evaporative emissions are equal to 6.05-12.71 g toluene in different months, much higher than that given using headspace vapors, especially in winter (7.2 times higher in December). These findings would improve our understanding of the evaporative VOCs emissions in China and their environmental impacts (e.g., O-3 and SOA formation).

Abstract:Tianjin is the third largest megacity and the fastest growth area in China, and consequently faces the problems of surface ozone and haze episodes. This study measures and characterizes volatile organic compounds(VOCs), which are ozone precursors, to identify their possible sources and evaluate their contribution to ozone formation in urban and suburban Tianjin,China during the Ha Chi(Haze in China) summer campaign in 2009. A total of 107 species of ambient VOCs were detected,and the average concentrations of VOCs at urban and suburban sites were 92 and 174 ppbv, respectively. Of those, 51 species of VOCs were extracted to analyze the possible VOC sources using positive matrix factorization. The identified sources of VOCs were significantly related to vehicular activities, which specifically contributed 60% to urban and 42% to suburban VOCs loadings in Tianjin. Industrial emission was the second most prominent source of ambient VOCs in both urban and suburban areas, although the contribution of industry in the suburban area(36%) was much higher than that at the urban area(16%). We conclude that controlling vehicle emissions should be a top priority for VOC reduction, and that fast industrialization and urbanization causes air pollution to be more complex due to the combined emission of VOCs from industry and daily life, especially in suburban areas.

Abstract:China has implemented various policies and measures for controlling air pollutants. However, our knowledge of the long-term trends in ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) after the implementation of these action plans in China remains limited. To address this, we conducted a five-year analysis (2016–2020) of VOC compositions and concentrations in Beijing. The annual VOC concentration decreased from 44.0 ± 28.8 to 26.2 ± 16.4 ppbv, with alkanes being the most prevalent group. The annual average concentrations of alkenes, alkynes, and aromatics have experienced a significant decrease of over 50 %. Seasonal variations indicated higher VOC concentrations in winter and autumn, with more significant reductions observed in winter and autumn. The impact of meteorological conditions caused variations in VOC reductions during the Chinese Spring Festival. Satellite-based measurements of formaldehyde (HCHO) columns confirmed the reduction of VOC emissions during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown. The normalized annual average VOC concentration decreased by 2.9 ppbv yr −1 from 2016 to 2020, and emission reduction contributed to 58.8 % of VOC reduction from 2016 to 2020 after meteorological normalization, indicating the effectiveness of implemented control measures. Based on receptor model, vehicle emissions and industrial sources were identified as the largest contributors to VOC concentrations. Vehicle emissions, liquefied petroleum gas/natural gas (LPG/NG) use, and coal combustion were major drivers of VOC reduction. Potential source region analysis revealed that air masses transported from northwestern and southern regions significantly contributed to VOC concentrations in Beijing. The range of source regions shrunk in both northwestern and southern regions with the reduction in VOC concentrations. The annual variations of ozone formation potential indicated a significant decrease in VOC reactivities through emission control. These results could provide insights into future emission control and coordinated efforts to improve PM 2.5 and ozone levels in China.

Abstract:Vehicle emissions in China have been decoupled from rapid motorization owing to comprehensive control strategies. China's increasingly ambitious goals for better air quality are calling for deep emission mitigation, posing a need to develop an up-to-date emission inventory that can reflect the fast-developing policies on vehicle emission control. Herein, large-sample vehicle emission measurements were collected to update the vehicle emission inventory. For instance, ambient temperature correction modules were developed to depict the remarkable regional and seasonal emission variations, showing that the monthly emission disparities for total hydrocarbon (THC) and nitrogen oxide (NOX) in January and July could be up to 1.7 times in northern China. Thus, the emission ratios of THC and NOX can vary dramatically among various seasons and provinces, which have not been considered well by previous simulations regarding the nonlinear atmospheric chemistry of ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) formation. The new emission results indicate that vehicular carbon monoxide (CO), THC, and PM2.5 emissions decreased by 69, 51, and 61%, respectively, during 2010-2019. However, the controls of NOX and ammonia (NH3) emissions were not as efficient as other pollutants. Under the most likely future scenario (PC [1]), CO, THC, NOX, PM2.5, and NH3 emissions were anticipated to reduce by 35, 36, 35, 45, and 4%, respectively, from 2019 to 2025. These reductions will be expedited with expected decreases of 56, 58, 74, 53, and 51% from 2025 to 2035, which are substantially promoted by the massive deployment of new energy vehicles and more stringent emission standards. The updated vehicle emission inventory can serve as an important tool to develop season- and location-specific mitigation strategies of vehicular emission precursors to alleviate haze and O3 problems.

Abstract:Vehicle emissions have become a significant contributor to urban air pollution. However, studies specific to city-level vehicle emission inventories are still scarce and tend to be outdated. This study introduces a methodology for developing high-resolution monthly vehicle emission inventories. We applied this methodology to Changzhou in 2022 to analyze emission characteristics and generate gridded emission data with a resolution of 0.01° × 0.01°. The results show that the total vehicle emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and fine particulate matters (PM2.5) in Changzhou are 39.69, 8.68, 18.6, and 0.56 Gg, respectively. Light-duty passenger vehicles are the main contributors to CO (74.3%) and VOCs (86.1%) emissions, while heavy-duty trucks play a significant role in NOx (50.7%) and PM2.5 (34.7%) emissions. Gasoline vehicles are mainly responsible for CO (78.6%) and VOCs (91.4%) emissions, while diesel vehicles are the primary source of NOx (81.1%) and PM2.5 (70.6%) emissions. Notably, China IV vehicles have the highest emission contribution rates (ranging from 32.5% to 44.9%). Seasonally, emissions peak in winter and are lowest in April. Spatially, emission intensity is higher in the northeast of Changzhou compared to the west and south. The methodology presented in this study offers a valuable tool for developing comprehensive city-level emission inventories, and the results provide critical insights that can inform the formulation of effective environmental policies.

Abstract:Vehicular emissions inventories from 1990 to 2009 in the 12 typical cities selected in China were calculated.The vehicular emissions trends in each city were analyzed on the basis of simulation results.The results showd that,during 1990 and 2009,the CO,VOCs,NOx and PM emission factors in 12 cities reduced by 57%~81%、53%~78%、22%~74% and 31%~76%,respectively.CO and VOCs emissions were observed a significant growth from 1990 to 2000,and then presented a decrease trend.NOx and PM emissions showed continued growth trend in most cities.Compared to the levels in 1990,CO,VOCs,NOx and PM emissions of the 12 cities in 2009 increased by 1.0,1.4,3.2 and 3.3 times,respectively.Gasoline vehicles were the major source of CO and VOCs emissions.LDA-G,MDTB-G and HDTB-G contributed 70%~90% and 50%~85% to CO and VOCs emissions,and the share of LDA-G increased significantly from 1990 to 2000.LDA-G,MDTB-G,MDTB-D and HDTB-D contribute 80%~90% to NOx emissions,and the contribution of MDTB-D and HDTB-D increased from 57.8% to 72.7% on average.MDTB-D and HDTB-D were responsible for 70%~90% of PM emissions.In addition,the contribution of motorcycles should not be neglected in several cities.
