Abstract:This study is the first in a series of papers that aim to develop high-resolution emission databases for different anthropogenic sources in China. Here we focus on on-road transportation. Because of the increasing impact of on-road transportation on regional air quality, developing an accurate and high-resolution vehicle emission inventory is important for both the research community and air quality management. This work proposes a new inventory methodology to improve the spatial and temporal accuracy and resolution of vehicle emissions in China. We calculate, for the first time, the monthly vehicle emissions for 2008 in 2364 counties (an administrative unit one level lower than city) by developing a set of approaches to estimate vehicle stock and monthly emission factors at county-level, and technology distribution at provincial level. We then introduce allocation weights for the vehicle kilometers traveled to assign the county-level emissions onto 0.05 degrees x 0.05 degrees grids based on the China Digital Road-network Map (CDRM). The new methodology overcomes the common shortcomings of previous inventory methods, including neglecting the geographical differences between key parameters and using surrogates that are weakly related to vehicle activities to allocate vehicle emissions. The new method has great advantages over previous methods in depicting the spatial distribution characteristics of vehicle activities and emissions. This work provides a better understanding of the spatial representation of vehicle emissions in China and can benefit both air quality modeling and management with improved spatial accuracy.

Abstract:One comprehensive emission inventory of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CH4, CO2 and N2O with high spatial reso-lution (0.01 degrees x 0.01 degrees) for 58 cities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and its surrounding areas (BTHSA) during 2000-2020 are developed by using COPERT model and ArcGIS methodology. The results show that vehicular emissions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and CH4 have begun to decrease or slow their growth rates in recent years due to the imple-mentation of measures to control vehicular emissions. However, vehicular emissions of CO2 increase rapidly due to lit-tle fuel economy improvement. Besides, the usage of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems by heavy duty truck (HDT) is the main factor impacting the growth trend of vehicular N2O emissions since 2017. By 2020, vehicular emis-sions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CO2, CH4 and N2O are estimated at about 1.65 Mt, 0.35 Mt, 1.39 Mt, 87.44 kt, 55.06 kt, 15.57 kt, 527.71 Mt, 36.20 kt and 8.56 kt, respectively. Therein, China III, IV, IV and IV passenger cars (PCs) are the predominated models for vehicular emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2, accounting for 19.59-28.26 % of the total vehicular emission of corresponding pollutant. Nevertheless, the major contributors of vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are China III (29.64 %), III (18.03 %), III (22.81 %), III (42.16 %) and V (22.28 %) HDTs, respectively. The gridded vehicular emissions vary significantly, with emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2 being mainly concentrated in central urban areas of cities (e.g., Beijing, Tangshan, Zhengzhou, Tianjin, Qingdao, Jinan). Nevertheless, the grids with high vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are mainly distributed along the expressway and the suburban roads of cities (e.g., Linyi, Tangshan, Jining, Weifang, Shijiazhuang, Tianjin, Baoding). Finally, multi-year uncertainties of vehicular emission inventory are discussed.
Multi-type Air Pollutant Emission Inventory of Non-road Mobile Sources in China for the Period 1990-2017

Abstract:With the increasingly strict supervision of road mobile sources and the ongoing progress in research, the relative contribution of non-road mobile sources to the total emissions has grown in prominence. Therefore, accurately estimating the emissions from non-road mobile sources is essential to developing effective policies for improving air quality. Hence, this study established an inventory of nine air pollutants, viz., CO, NOx, HC, PM2.5, PM10, BC, OC, VOCs, and SO2, emitted by four types of non-road mobile sources, viz., construction machinery, agricultural machinery, vessels, and diesel locomotives, in China for the period 1990-2017. These emissions increased continually from 1990 till 2014, after which they decreased before increasing again during 2017. With the exception of SO2, which primarily originated from vessels, agricultural machinery accounted for the largest proportion of emissions for all of the pollutants, contributing 67.7% (1472.5 Gg) and 46.1% (2170.4 Gg) of the total CO and NOx from non-road mobile sources, respectively. Additionally, the spatial distribution of the investigated pollutants revealed high concentrations on the North China Plain and in the Southeast China coastal area. Our findings demonstrate the necessity of improving the registration system for non-road mobile sources as well as the urgency of obtaining accurate emission factors for them by further researching their emission characteristics.
Spatiotemporal Distribution Characteristics and Inventory Analysis of Near-Road Traffic Pollution in Urban Areas

Abstract:Vehicle emissions belong to the category of near-surface sources, occur close to human activity areas, and pose a greater threat to human health than other anthropogenic pollution sources. Furthermore, the study of the spatiotemporal characteristics of near-road traffic pollution is of great significance to urban and regional ambient air quality management, and is also an important basis for vehicle emission inventories, as well as the assessment of ambient air impact. Most previous studies have analyzed the spatiotemporal characteristics of hydrocarbons (HCs), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx ), and carbon dioxide (CO2) in urban vehicle emissions over a certain time, without considering the synergistic effect of mobile source particulate matter, NOx, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, we analyze the composition of vehicles with different emission standards from road mobile sources in Anqing City, China. National category III and IV vehicles are the main contribution sources of various pollutants, accounting for more than 60% of emissions. Although national category I and II vehicles accounted for less than 1% of the total number of vehicles, their contribution to emissions cannot be ignored, especially for CO and HCs, the contribution of which from such vehicles can reach about 7%. This is mainly due to the low level of pollution control arising from the larger emission factor and greater age of these vehicles. Furthermore, eliminating old cars and increasing the proportion of national category VI vehicles can effectively reduce vehicle pollutant emissions. In terms of the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics, highways around urban areas are also the main sources of heavy vehicles, and the emission intensity of these pollutants is also higher on national roads and highways surrounding urban areas. In addition, the presence of m/p-xylene and toluene solvent-using species is detected, which indicates that petrol vehicle emissions, LPG and petrol volatilization, and solvent-using sources contribute significantly to ozone formation in the ozone pollution process. Comparing weekdays and non-weekdays, the PM2.5 peaks on non-weekdays are significantly higher than those on weekdays, and there is no "weekend effect", which indicates that traffic emissions have little influence on PM2.5 emissions, and may be related to energy use and industrial pollution. Overall, this study strengthens the understanding of the relationship between emissions, traffic volumes, and vehicle types on spatial and temporal scales, and emphasizes the need for further investigation and comprehensive measures to mitigate pollution from these emissions.

Abstract:The vehicular emission inventories with high temporal and spatial resolution of 1km×1km were developed using modified IVE model and GIS technique based on a series of investigations in Hangzhou in 2010.The results showed that the emissions of CO,HC,NOx and PM were 440.6,23.1,44.3,6.5kt respectively,principally from line-road sources emission.There are significant differences in the emission contributions among different vehicle types.Gasoline passenger cars and buses contributed most to the emission of CO and HC.While diesel heavy-duty trucks and buses were the major NOx and PM contributors.At the same time,the ratio of diesel vs.gasoline showed significant effects on pollutant emissions.Vehicle emissions closely related with the intensity and length of road networks which made the emissions in Xihu and Jianggan districts were much more than other four districts.Vehicles spatial distributions showed that the vehicles emissions decreased gradually from urban core to surrounding areas.Emission in city center contributed more than 70 percent to total vehicles emissions.The temporal variation trends varied apparently which were well consistent with the characteristics of people’s activities.
Source Contributions to Ambient Concentrations of Co and Nox in the Urban Area of Beijing

Abstract:An emission inventory based on GIS technology was developed in this study, and used to estimate the spatial distribution of the stationary and mobile sources in the urban area of Beijing. The stationary sources were divided into various types of finer classes depending on different usage, stack height and emission factors. The mobile sources were treated as both line sources and area sources. It was shown that total anthropogenic CO and NOX emissions had reached 1.4 million and 233 thousand tons, respectively, and vehicle sources emissions of CO and NOX accounted for 76.8% and 40.2%, respectively, of the total emissions in 1995. ISCST3, a Gaussian dispersion air quality model, was modified at low wind speed condition, and then used to facilitate the study of source contributions to ambient concentrations of CO and NOX in Beijing. The simulation results showed that emissions from the vehicle sources had contributed 76.5% and 68.4% of the total CO and NOX concentrations in urban atmosphere of Beijing in 1995, and were even higher in the city core (86.3% of the CO and 72.0% of the NOX). Therefore, strategies for CO and NOX pollution control will of necessity need to focus on the vehicle sources.

Abstract:We developed a high-resolution Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) regional air pollutants emission inventory for the year 2013. The inventory was established using a bottom-up approach based on facility-level activity data obtained from multiple data sources. The estimates from the BTH 2013 emission inventory show that the total emissions of SO2, NOX, PM2.5, PM10, CO, NMVOC, NH3, BC, and OC were 2,305, 2,686, 1,090, 1,494, 20,567, 2,207, 623, 160, and 254 Gg, respectively. The industry sector is the largest emissions source for 502, NOX, PM2.5, PM10, CO, and NMVOC in the BTH region, contributing 72.6%, 43.7%, 59.6%, 64.7%, 60.3%, and 70.4% of the total emissions, respectively. Power plants contributed 11.8% and 23.3% of the total SO2 and NOX emissions, respectively. The transportation sector contributed 28.9% of the total NOX emissions. Emissions from the residential sector accounted for 31.3%, 21.5%, 46.6% and 71.7% of the total PM2.5, NMVOC, BC and OC emissions, respectively. In addition, more than 90% of the total NH3 emissions originate from the agriculture sector, with 44.2% from fertilizer use and 47.7% from livestock. The spatial distribution results illustrate that air pollutant emissions are mainly distributed over the eastern and southern BTH regions. Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Tangshan and Handan are the major contributors of air pollutants. The major NMVOC species in the BTH region are ethylene, acetylene, ethane and toluene. Ethylene is the biggest contributor in Tianjin and Hebei. The largest contributor in Beijing is toluene. There is relatively low uncertainty in SO2 and NOX emission estimates, medium uncertainty in PM2.5, PM10 and CO emission estimates, and high uncertainties in VOC, NH3, BC and OC emission estimates. Abstract:Abstract. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is closely linked to human health, with its sources generally divided into local emissions and regional transport. This study combined concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analysis with the HYSPLIT trajectory ensemble to obtain hourly-resolution pollutant source results. The Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model was then employed to simulate local emissions and ambient PM2.5 in Beijing from 2013 to 2020. The results revealed that clean air masses influencing the Beijing area mainly originated from the north and east regions, exhibiting a strong winter and weak summer pattern. Following the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (Action Plan) by the Chinese government in 2017, pollution in Beijing decreased significantly, with the most substantial reduction in regional transport pollution events occurring in the west region during summer. Regional transport pollution events were most frequent in spring, up to 1.8 times higher than in winter. Pollutants mainly originated from the west and south regions, while polluted air masses from the east showed the least reduction, and the proportion of pollution sources from this region is gradually increasing. From 2013 to 2020, local emissions were the main contributors of pollution events in Beijing. The Action Plan has more effectively reduced pollution caused by regional transport, particularly during autumn and winter. This finding underscores the importance of Beijing prioritizing local emission reduction while also considering potential contributions from the east region to effectively mitigate pollution events.

Abstract:Effect data collected in Tianjin City related to vehicle type,technology distribution,driving patterns,and acceleration patterns were used to estimate vehicular emissions in the city.The data provide a comprehensive analysis of the on-road vehicular emission in Tianjin.The international vehicle emissions(IVE) model was used to create the mobile emissions inventory.A preliminary analysis indicates that 52%-55% of the total emissions are from the peak emission hours.Non-catalyzed vehicles are the main sources contributing 60%-95% of the emissions.Traffic on residential roads leads to relatively high emissions.These factors should be the focus of the Tianjin vehicle emission control strategy.

Abstract:Currently, atmospheric emission inventory that includes multi-type pollutants and sources is still limited at the city level. This study developed a high-resolution emission inventory of eight pollutants based on detailed investigated data for Wuxi city in 2015. Results show that the total emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), total suspended particulates (TSP), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 gm or less (PM10), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 mu m or less (PM2.5), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were 36.9 kt, 95.2 kt, 287.3 kt, 127.8 kt, 46.0 kt, 626.4 kt, 10.9 kt, and 104.9 kt, respectively. Power plants were the major contributors of SO2 and NOx, accounting for 34.6% and 36.3% of the total emissions, respectively. Road dust was the dominant source of particulate matter, contributing 63.1%, 57.8% and 38.2% to the total TSP, PMio and PM2.5 emissions, respectively. Around 67.0% of CO emissions were from iron and steel plants, while 50.1% of NH3 emissions were from livestock and poultry sectors. VOCs emissions largely came from oil refinery and chemical industry, with a share of 41.3%. High NH3 emissions were found in the southwest and northeast of Wuxi where high-intensity agriculture was located, while other pollutants were mainly concentrated on the eastern Wuxi where heavy industries, crowded traffic and highly dense population were located. Most pollutants from the industrial source exhibited the lowest value in February due to the Chinese Spring Festival with the exception of CO and NH3. This study helps to formulate the targeted air pollution control measures for Wuxi city by providing detailed information regarding the spatial-temporal distribution of multi-type air pollutants. Uncovering PM 2.5 transport trajectories and sources at district within city scale

Abstract:To continuously improve air quality, it is necessary to carry out fine management of air pollution prevention and control. However, research into regional transport of PM 2.5 at a smaller spatial scale such as district is limited. In this study, a novel combined method was constructed to simulate and identify the regional transport trajectories and potential sources of PM 2.5 concentrations at district scale, based on a hybrid model that integrates the Bayesian maximum entropy (BME) model, Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) and backward trajectory model. Take Tianjin as an example, an analysis of the transport trajectories showed that the air masses from northwest and southwest were the dominant atmospheric transport pathway in all seasons except summer. The number of transport trajectories from northwest and southwest accounted for 42.41% and 40.75% of the total number of transport trajectories. Despite the dominant wind direction in winter was northwest, it can be beneficial to atmospheric transport. This was because northwest trajectories were the long-range pathways, corresponding to fast-moving air masses that facilitate the dispersion of pollutants. On contrast, it is noteworthy that the southwest trajectories were the short-range pathways, resulting in limited diffusion and unfavorable conditions. The major potential cities that were likely contributors of PM 2.5 (Weighted Concentration-Weighted Trajectory (WCWT) values greater than 40 μg m −3 ) were situated in the southwest. Furthermore, the inter-district transport results indicated that the primary direction of PM 2.5 transport in Tianjin was also from south to north. It is critical that the current layout of Tianjin is adjusted in a timely manner through relocating or phasing out, as the majority of industrial enterprises with severe air pollution in Tianjin are located in the southern districts. This method of combining BME, WRF and backward trajectory can be used for atmospheric environment planning in other similar city and district-scale around the world. It also provides useful insights to policy makers when they formulate pollutants prevention control policies.

High-resolution vehicular emission inventory using a link-based method: a case study of light-duty vehicles in Beijing.

Abstract:We propose a new link-based, bottom-up vehicle emission inventory method for Chinese cities using available on-road emission measurement data and activity survey data. This study uses Beijing as a case study and focuses on CO, HC, and NOx emissions from hot-stabilized activities of light-duty vehicles. The target year is 2004. The total quantity of emissions, emission intensity, temporal distribution of emissions by hour, and spatial distribution of emissions at 1 km x 1 km resolution are presented and compared with results from other inventory methods commonly used in China. The results show that the total emissions from light-duty vehicles in the Beijing urban area in 2004 were 1141 Mg of CO per day, 48 Mg of HC per day, and 32 Mg of NOx per day. Pollutant emissions from mobile sources show temporal and spatial variation trends that are consistent with the characteristics of people's activities. The inventory developed in this study reflects the influences of vehicle driving patterns in traffic on vehicle emissions on a road link basis, and it could be used to evaluate the impacts of traffic-related emission control measures in China.

Improved spatial representation of a highly resolved emission inventory in China: evidence from TROPOMI measurements

Abstract:Abstract Emissions in many sources are estimated in municipal district totals and spatially disaggregated onto grid cells using empirically selected spatial proxies such as population density, which might introduce biases, especially in fine spatial scale. Efforts have been made to improve the spatial representation of emission inventory, by incorporating comprehensive point source database (e.g. power plants, industrial facilities) in emission estimates. Satellite-based observations from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) with unprecedented pixel sizes (3.5 × 7 km 2 ) and signal-to-noise ratios offer the opportunity to evaluate the spatial accuracy of such highly resolved emissions from space. Here, we compare the city-level NO x emissions from a proxy-based emission inventory named the Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC) with a highly resolved emission inventory named the Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China - High Resolution (MEIC-HR) that has nearly 100 000 industrial facilities, and evaluate them through NO x emissions derived from the TROPOMI NO 2 tropospheric vertical column densities (TVCDs). We find that the discrepancies in city-level NO x emissions between MEIC and MEIC-HR are influenced by the proportions of emissions from point sources and NO x emissions per industrial gross domestic product (IGDP). The use of IGDP as a spatial proxy to disaggregate industrial emissions tends to overestimate NO x emissions in cities with lower industrial emission intensities or less industrial facilities in the MEIC. The NO x emissions of 70 cities are derived from one year TROPOMI NO 2 TVCDs using the exponentially modified Gaussian function. Compared to the satellite-derived emissions, the cities with higher industrial point source emission proportions in MEIC-HR agree better with space-constrained results, indicating that integrating more point sources in the inventory would improve the spatial accuracy of emissions on city scale. In the future, we should devote more efforts to incorporating accurate locations of emitting facilities to reduce uncertainties in fine-scale emission estimates and guide future policies.

Multi-scale volatile organic compound (VOC) source apportionment in Tianjin, China, using a receptor model coupled with 1-hr resolution data

Abstract:The multi-scale chemical characteristics and source apportionment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analysed in Tianjin, China, using 1-hr resolution VOC-species data between November 1, 2018 and March 15, 2019. The average total VOC (TVOC) concentration was 30.6 ppbv during the heating season. The alkanes accounted for highest proportion of the TVOC, while the alkenes were the predominant species forming ozone, especially ethylene. Compared to the clean period, the concentration of acetylene during the haze events showed highest increase rate, followed by the ethane; and the concentrations and proportions of alkanes and alkenes were highest during the growth stage (GS) of haze events. The multi-scale apportionment results suggested petrochemical industry and solvent usage (PI/SU, 31.2%), vehicle emissions and liquefied petroleum gas (VE/LPG, 20.5%), and combustion emissions (CE, 19.1%) were the main VOC sources during the heating season. Compared to the clean period, the contributions of PI/SU, VE/LPG, CE, and refinery emissions notably increased during the haze events, while that of gasoline evaporation decreased. The contributions of PI/SU and RPI showed significantly increase during the GS of haze events, whereas most sources decreased during the dissipation stage of haze events. Diurnal-variations in source contributions during the haze events were clearer than the clean period, and the contributions of PI/SU, VE/LPG, and CE during the haze events were markedly higher at night. These findings provide valuable information to inform effective VOC control and prevention measures with specific relevance for the control of ozone pollution in Tianjin.

Abstract:Abstract. Urban on-road vehicle emissions affect air quality and human health locally and globally. Such emissions typically exhibit distinct spatial heterogeneity, varying sharply over short distances (10 m ~ 1 km). However, all-around observational constraints on the emission sources are limited in much of the world. Consequently, traditional emission inventories lack the spatial resolution that can characterize on-road vehicle emission hotspots. Here we establish a bottom-up approach to reveal a unique pattern of urban on-road vehicle emissions at 1 ~ 3 orders of magnitude higher spatial resolution than current inventories. We interconnect all-around traffic monitoring (including traffic fluxes, vehicle-specific categories, and speeds) via an intelligent transportation system (ITS) over the Xiaoshan District in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region. This enables us to calculate single-vehicle-specific emissions over each fine-scale (10 m ~ 1 km) road segment. Thus, a hyperfine emission dataset is achieved, and on-road emission hotspots appear. The resulting map shows that the hourly average on-road vehicle emissions of CO, NOx, HC, and PM2.5 are 74.01 kg, 40.35 kg, 8.13 kg, and 1.68 kg, respectively. More importantly, widespread and persistent emission hotspots emerge, of significantly sharp small-scale variability, up to 8 ~ 15 times, attributable to distinct traffic fluxes, road conditions, and vehicle categories. On this basis, we investigate the effectiveness of routine traffic control strategies on the on-road vehicle emission mitigation. Our results have important implications for how the strategies should be designed and optimized. Integrating our traffic-monitoring-based approach with urban air quality measurements, we could address major data gaps between urban air pollutant emissions and concentrations.

Abstract:Ship pollution has become a hot global issue. This study established a basic information database of Tianjin Port ship emissions and used it to screen representative ship types and perform real-world ship measurements by a portable emission measurement system (PEMS), which generated localized emission factors. The results show that the localized emission factors are significantly higher than those recommended in recommended in Chinese guidelines, which will lead to lower calculation results of the previous inventory. A high temporal-spatial ship emission inventory for Tianjin Port was developed using a "bottom-up" method based on automatic identification system (AIS) data by combining localized emission factors. The total estimated ship emissions for SO2, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, THC and CO in 2018 were 1.453 × 104 t, 2.861 × 104 t, 2.04 × 103 t, 1.82 × 103 t, 1.13 × 103 t, and 2.21 × 103 t, respectively. NOX was the primary pollutant, accounting for 56.9%, followed by SO2 (28.9%). The use of low-sulfur fuel in the port area has significantly reduced the discharge of SO2 and primary particles. The main channel and anchorage are the areas with the highest emission intensity. The intermonth ship emissions varied according to the ship activity, lowest in February and highest in May. The contribution of cargo transportation vessels to various pollutant emissions is more than 60%. Main engines (MEs) were the largest source of emissions, followed by auxiliary engines (AEs). NOX and SOX from ships have the greatest impact on the air quality in the surrounding area, especially in summer and autumn, as analyzed by the atmospheric dispersion modeling system (ADMS) model. Our research will update localized emission factors and inventories and evaluate the impact of ship emissions on air quality.

Abstract:In order to explore the establishment method of high-resolution vehicle emission inventory and analyze the temporal and spatial variation law of vehicle greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. This paper proposes a bottom-up method based on road network information and the real-time average interval speed of road segments. A traffic speed-flow model is proposed to predict the hourly traffic flow and the localized Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) is used to simulate the CO2, N2O and CH4 emission factors. A high temporal (1 h × 1 h) and spatial (1 km × 1  km) resolution GHG emission inventory of motor vehicles in Beijing in 2018 is developed by this means. The actual emissions of CO2, N2O and CH4 are 19,864,590, 82 and 511 t, respectively. And the total GHG emission is 19,901,933 tCO2e combined with global warming potential (GWP). The daily GHG emissions on weekday and weekend are 55206.30 and 52817.64 tCO2e, respectively. There are three obvious peak emission periods on the weekday, namely, the morning peak (8:00–9:00), the noon peak (11:00–12:00) and the evening peak (18:00–19:00), which contribute 11.76%, 11.84% and 12.92% of the daily emission, respectively. The 1 h × 1 h emission grid shows the spatial distribution characteristics of emissions. The areas within the Fifth Ring Road (973 km2) are only 5.93% of the total area of the city (16,410 km2) but contribute 41.53% of the total vehicle GHG emissions. This study provides detailed data support for implementing vehicle GHG emission mitigation measures.
