Abstract:Purpose To evaluate the impact of varying concentrations of 3 mol% yttria‐stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline ceramic (3Y‐TZP) nanoparticles on mechanical properties of three‐dimensional (3D)‐printed resins in stereolithography (SLA) technology. Materials and Methods A total of four groups (n = 6) of specimens were printed. Pure 3D‐printed resin was used as the control group (0 wt%). For the experimental groups, modified 3Y‐TZP nanoparticles were dispersed into 3D‐printed resin at 1, 3, and 5 wt% concentrations to fabricate nanocomposites. Mechanical tests, including degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength, flexural modulus, fractography, and hardness, were evaluated and analyzed by one‐way analysis of variance followed by the Games–Howell post‐hoc test or Tukey post‐hoc test (α = 0.05). Results The DC of the control group showed the lowest value (p < 0.0001). The DC values peaked at the 5 wt% group, with no significant difference between the 3 wt% group. The flexural strength and modulus of the experimental groups were significantly higher than those in the control group. The addition of 1 and 3 wt% 3Y‐TZP nanoparticles significantly improved the flexural strength and modulus (p < 0.05), while 5 wt% resulted in a significant decrease. The 1 wt% group showed the lowest hardness value. Maximum hardness value was observed in the 3 wt% group (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed between the control and 5 wt% groups (p = 0.428). Conclusion Optimal mechanical properties were obtained with the 3 wt% group, indicating its potential as a dental material in clinical application.

Mechanical properties, cytotoxicity, and protein adsorption of three-dimensionally printable hybrid resin containing zwitterionic polymer and silicate-based composites for dental restorations

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the mechanical and biological properties of three-dimensionally (3D) printable resins filled with 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and silicate-based composites and compare with those of a commercially available 3D-printable resin for definitive restorations. Methods: A group of 3D-printable hybrid resins (HRs) filled with 6 wt% MPC and three different compositions of silicate-based composites (barium silicate to zirconium silicate ratios: 1.50:1 for HR1, 0.67:1 for HR2, and 0.25:1 for HR3) were prepared. The HR groups were compared with the commercially available unfilled 3D-printable resin (CR) marketed for definitive restorations in terms of flexural strength and modulus, fracture toughness, surface roughness, Vickers hardness, light transmittance (all, n = 15), cytotoxicity, and protein adsorption (both, n = 3). All data were analyzed by using non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests (α=0.05). Results: The HR groups had significantly higher flexural strength, modulus, fracture toughness, and hardness values than the CR (P < 0.001). HR3 had the highest surface roughness and light transmittance among the groups (P ≤ 0.006). None of tested resins showed cytotoxicity. Both HR2 and HR3 showed significantly lower protein adsorption than the CR, with a difference of approximately 60% (P ≤ 0.026). Conclusion: Both HR2 and HR3 exhibited superior mechanical properties (flexural strength, flexural modulus, fracture toughness, and Vickers hardness), light transmittance, and protein-repellent activity than the CR, with no impact on cytotoxicity. Clinical significance: The MPC/silicate-based composite-filled resins may be a suitable alternative for definitive restorations, given their higher mechanical properties and promising biological properties to prevent microbial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation, as well as their non-cytotoxic properties.

Abstract:Zirconia ceramics are versatile materials with remarkable properties such as a high thermal resistance, high fracture strength, and low thermal conductivity. They are chemically inert and highly wear- and corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for a wide range of applications in the aerospace, automotive, and biomedical fields. In dentistry, zirconia ceramics are used for veneers, crowns, bridges, and implants because of their biocompatibility. Despite the various benefits of zirconia ceramics, they are difficult to process because of their high hardness and brittleness. Additive manufacturing (AM) has proven to be a viable alternative to conventional fabrication processes, particularly for the processing of difficult-to-cut materials. AM of ceramics has gained significant attention in recent years because of its flexibility and ability to produce customized geometries rapidly and economically. In this study, the digital light processing (DLP) technique was employed to 3D print yttria-stabilized zirconia. The fabricated zirconia was evaluated and characterized for use in dental applications. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermogravimetry (DTG) were performed on the green body to assess the decomposition of the additives in the slurry and determine the debinding temperatures. The as-built parts were subjected to debinding and sintering to obtain fully dense zirconia parts. The parts tended to shrink after sintering; therefore, the shrinkage ratios were evaluated and found to be 1.2817, 1.2900, and 1.3388 in the x-, y-, and z-directions, respectively. The average density after sintering was 6.031 g/cc. The flexural strength determined using four-point bending tests was 451.876 MPa, and the tensile and compressive strengths were 143 MPa and 298.4 MPa, respectively.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing technologies can be used to fabricate 3D-printed dental restorations. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the functionalized loading of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles and silver-nanoparticles-immobilized halloysite (HNC/Ag) nanotubes into 3D printing resins. We created 3D printing resins by adding different mass fractions of ZrO2 and HNC/Ag. First, six groups of samples containing ZrO2 were prepared, comprising five groups with different mass fractions and one control group of ZrO2 containing 1 to 16 %wt. Different mass fractions of HNC/Ag fillers were combined with the ZrO2 mixture and resin at the ideal ratio from 1 to 7.5 %wt. The mechanical characteristics of 3D resin that we assessed were the flexural strength, flexural modulus, fracture toughness, and the microhardness. Additional rates of ZrO2 4 %wt. and HNC/Ag 5 %wt. significantly increase the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and fracture toughness compared to the control group (p < 0.001). ZrO2 16 %wt. and HNC/Ag 5 %wt. were found to be significantly harder compared to the other groups (p < 0.001). The amounts of NPs that can be added to 3D printing resin modification appears to be 4 %wt., and HNC/Ag 5 %wt. can be advantageous in terms of fracture toughness, flexural strength, and flexural modulus. All additions of nanoparticles raised the resin's hardness.

The physical-mechanical properties of 3D-printed versus conventional milled zirconia for dental clinical applications: A systematic review with meta-analysis

Abstract:Aim of study: This systematic review aimed to compare the physical-mechanical properties of 3D-printed (additively manufactured (AM)) zirconia compared to conventionally milled (subtractive manufactured: SM) zirconia specimens. Materials and methods: A thorough search of Internet databases was conducted up to September 2023. The search retrieved studies that evaluated AM zirconia specimens and restorations regarding the physical-mechanical properties and mechanical behavior of zirconia. The main topic focused on 3Y-TZP. However, records of 4YSZ and 5YSZ were also included to gather more comprehensive evidence on additively manufactured zirconia ceramic. The quality of studies was assessed using the ROB2 tool, Newcastle Ottawa scale, and the Modified Consort Statement. Of 1736 records, 57 were assessed for eligibility, and 38 records were included in this review, only two clinical trials meet the inclusion criteria and 36 records were laboratory studies. There were no signs of mechanical complications and wear to antagonists with short-term clinical observation. SM thin specimens ≤1.5 mm showed statistically significant higher flexural strength than AM zirconia (p ≤ 0.01), while thicker specimens showed comparable outcomes (p > 0.5). The fracture resistance of dental restorations was dependent on the aging protocol, restoration type, and thickness. The bond strength of veneering ceramic to zirconia core was comparable. Conclusions: The results pooled from two short-term clinical trials showed no signs of mechanical or biological complications of additively manufactured 3Y-TZP zirconia crowns. The flexural strength might depend on the specimens' thickness, but it showed promising results to be used in clinical applications, taking into account the printing technique and orientation, material composition (yttria content), solid loading, and sintering parameters. 3D-printed restorations fracture resistance improved when adhered to human teeth. The veneering ceramic bond was comparable to milled zirconia specimens. Long-term RCTs are recommended to confirm the mechanical behavior of 3D-printed restorations.

Abstract:<p>Flowable photocurable resins can be printed effectively by stereolithographic 3D printing for dental applications; however, the 3D-printed objects' mechanical properties cannot meet the requirements for the dental restorative materials. In this study, a strong customized crown for tooth repair was first prepared via direct ink writing 3D printing from a high-viscosity hybrid paste of acrylic monomer and multi-scale inorganic particles. The results showed that the hybrid resin-based composites (RBCs) could be printed successfully and smoothly through a metal nozzle with a gradually shrinking channel. The theoretical simulation of finite element methods was consistent with the experiment results. The printed objects were preliminarily cured incrementally and exhibited a low shrinkage ratio of only 2.58±0.11%. The printed samples with criss-crossed layers by interrupting crack propagation exhibited superior mechanical properties (a flexural strength of 120.8±4.1 MPa and a compressive strength of 323.6±5.6 MPa) than their traditional molding counterparts. Since the deposited layers exhibited improved resistance to bending forces, the flexural strength of the sample with a print orientation in adjacent layers (45–135°) even reached 145.5±8.7 MPa. The RBCs were successfully used to print strong, high-performance and biocompatibility dental crowns, expected to provide a customized component for the clinical restoration of teeth.</p>

Abstract:Highly dense zirconia ceramic dental crowns were successfully fabricated by a digital light processing (DLP) additive manufacturing technique. The effects of slurry solid content and exposure density on printing accuracy, curing depth, shrinkage rate, and relative density were evaluated. For the slurry with a solid content of 80 wt%, the curing depth achieved 40 μm with minimal overgrowth under an exposure intensity of 16.5 mW/cm2. Solid content and sintering temperature had remarkable effects on physical properties and microstructure. Higher solid content resulted in better structural integrity, higher relative density, and denser microstructure. Compressive strength, Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, and wear resistance significantly increase with lifting solid content, reaching values of 677 MPa, 12.62 GPa, 6.3 MPa·m1/2, and 1.5 mg/min, respectively, for 1500°C sintered zirconia dental crowns printed from a slurry with 80 wt% solid content. DLP is deemed a promising technology for the fabrication of zirconia ceramic dental crowns for tooth repair.

Abstract:During the last years, the interest in the application of the additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, becomes extremely popular in the various fields of the medicine including the dentistry. Currently, metal and ceramic materials are most often used for dental prosthetics manufactured by 3D printing. The yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics has become the best alternative for metal-based dental restorations. In this regard, the main goal of this review deals with studying the effect of the 3D printing parameters on the macro- and microstructure and, accordingly, on the mechanical properties of the sintered YSZ, and on this basis, to give the practical recommendations to clinical dentistry and further prospects. As most researched in recent years, the 3D printing methods of such ceramics are the Laser-Stereolithography (Laser-SL) and the Stereolithography-Digital Light Processing (SL-DLP) based on the vat-photopolymerization technology and are discussed here. The physical foundations and the technological parameters of these AM technologies are considered. The main attention focuses on the effects of the thermal conditions during the 3D printing on the solidification microstructure (density, grain size, and crystalline phase composition), which is controlled by the manufacturing technologies. In addition, the true hardness and the biaxial flexural strength of the 3D printed YSZ samples are discussed. At last, the advantages of 3D printing ceramics in dentistry are mentioned.

Abstract:The recent improvements in CT detector and gantry technology in combination with new heart rate adaptive cone beam reconstruction algorithms enable the visualization of the heart in three dimensions at high spatial resolution. However, the finite temporal resolution still impedes the artifact-free reconstruction of the heart at any arbitrary phase of the cardiac cycle. Cardiac phases must be found during which the heart is quasistationary to obtain outmost image quality. It is challenging to find these phases due to intercycle and patient-to-patient variability. Electrocardiogram (ECG) information does not always represent the heart motion with an adequate accuracy. In this publication, a simple and efficient image-based technique is introduced which is able to deliver stable cardiac phases in an automatic and patient-specific way. From low-resolution four-dimensional data sets, the most stable phases are derived by calculating the object similarity between subsequent phases in the cardiac cycle. Patient-specific information about the object motion can be determined and resolved spatially. This information is used to perform optimized high-resolution reconstructions at phases of little motion. Results based on a simulation study and three real patient data sets are presented. The projection data were generated using a 16-slice cone beam CT system in low-pitch helical mode with parallel ECG recording.
Optimization of 3D Printing Technology for Fabrication of Dental Crown Prototype Using Plastic Powder and Zirconia Materials

Abstract:This research was aimed at developing a dental prototype from 3D printing technology using a synthetic filament of polylactic acid (PLA) and zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) with glycerol and silane coupling agent as a binder. A face-centered central composite design was used to study the effects of the filament extrusion parameters and the 3D printing parameters. Tensile and compressive testing was conducted to determine the stress-strain relationship of the filaments. The yield strength, elongation percentage and Young's modulus were also calculated. Results showed the melting temperature of 193 °C, ZrO2 ratio of 17 wt.% and 25 rpm screw speed contributed to the highest ultimate tensile strength of the synthetic filament. A Nozzle temperature of 210 °C and an infill density of 100% had the most effect on the ultimate compressive strength whilst the printing speed had no significant effects. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study the thermal properties and percentage of crystallinity of PLA filaments. The addition of glycerol and a silane coupling agent increased the tensile strength and filament size. The ZrO2 particles induced the crystallization of the PLA matrix. A higher crystallization was also obtained from the annealing treatment resulting in the greater thermal resistance performance of the dental crown prototype.

Abstract:The cellular mechanisms responsible for enhanced muscle protein breakdown in hospitalized patients, which frequently results in lean body wasting, are unknown. To determine whether the lysosomal, Ca2+-activated, and ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathways are activated, we measured mRNA levels for components of these processes in muscle biopsies from severe head trauma patients. These patients exhibited negative nitrogen balance and increased rates of whole-body protein breakdown (assessed by [13C]leucine infusion) and of myofibrillar protein breakdown (assessed by 3-methylhistidine urinary excretion). Increased muscle mRNA levels for cathepsin D, m-calpain, and critical components of the ubiquitin proteolytic pathway (i.e., ubiquitin, the 14-kDa ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2, and proteasome subunits) paralleled these metabolic adaptations. The data clearly support a role for multiple proteolytic processes in increased muscle proteolysis. The ubiquitin proteolytic pathway could be activated by altered glucocorticoid production and/or increased circulating levels of interleukin 1beta and interleukin 6 observed in head trauma patients and account for the breakdown of myofibrillar proteins, as was recently reported in animal studies.
Manufacturing and Characterization of Dental Crowns Made of 5-mol% Yttria Stabilized Zirconia by Digital Light Processing

Abstract:We herein report manufacturing of dental crowns made of 5-mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ) with desired mechanical properties, optical translucency and dimensional accuracy using digital light processing (DLP). To this end, all processing parameters were carefully controlled and optimized. First, 5Y-PSZ particles with a bimodal distribution were prepared via calcination of as-received granules and subsequent ball-milling and then used to formulate 5Y-PSZ suspensions with a high solid loading of 50 vol% required for high densification after sintering. Dispersant content was also optimized. To provide high dimensional accuracy, initial dimensions of dental crowns for 3D printing were precisely determined by considering increase and decrease in dimensions during photopolymerization and sintering, respectively. Photopolymerization time was also optimized for a given layer thickness of 50 μm to ensure good bonding between layers. A multi-step debinding schedule with a slow heating rate was employed to avoid formation of any defects. After sintering at 1500 °C for 2 h, 5Y-PSZ could be almost fully densified without noticeable defects within layers and at interfaces between layers. They had high relative densities (99.03 ± 0.39%) with a high cubic phase content (59.1%). These characteristics allowed for achievement of reasonably high mechanical properties (flexural strength = 625.4 ± 75.5 MPa and Weibull modulus = 7.9) and % transmittance (31.4 ± 0.7%). In addition, 5Y-PSZ dental crowns showed excellent dimensional accuracy (root mean square (RMS) for marginal discrepancy = 44.4 ± 10.8 μm and RMS for internal gap = 22.8 ± 1.6 μm) evaluated by the 3D scanning technique.

Abstract:3D printing of denture artificial teeth with resin materials is worthy of study in a novel way. This study evaluated chipping and indirect tensile fracture resistance of 3D printing resin material (Dentca 3D printing denture teeth resin) compared with conventionally prefabricated resin denture teeth (Premium-8, Surpass, SR-Orthosit-PE, and Preference). One hundred tooth specimens were prepared for testing. The 3D printed tooth specimens were printed at a 50 μm layer thickness with methacrylate-based photopolymerized resin by stereolithography 3D printing. Chipping and indirect tensile fracture tests were conducted at a speed of 1 mm/min until fracture. The indirect tensile fracture loads of the 3D printed resin teeth were higher than those of Premium-8, Surpass, and SR-Orthosit-PE, and lower than those of Preference teeth. Regarding chipping resistance, the 3D printed resin teeth were not different from Surpass and SR-Orthosit-PE, and were lower than Premium-8 and Preference teeth. The 3D printed resin teeth exhibited vertical fracture of the loaded cusp without deformation in chipping. The 3D printed resin teeth showed simultaneous fracture of two cusps in indirect tensile fracture, unlike other teeth. The results of this study suggest that 3D printing technology using resin materials provides adequate fracture resistance for denture artificial tooth use.

Abstract:Digital Light Processing (DLP) enables intricate ceramic part production from photosensitive ceramic slurry. While ZrO 2 and Al 2 O 3 are commonly studied, their composites are underexplored despite diverse applications. This study investigates fabricating high-strength, fully dense alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) parts using a low-cost desktop DLP printer designed for polymer printing. Various ATZ-based ceramic slurries (30, 35, 42.5 vol%) with different binders and dispersants were prepared and evaluated for curing and rheological properties. Promising formulations underwent debinding and sintering, resulting in homogenous microstructures with a well-distributed blend of the two phases. For the doped samples, SEM analysis revealed a good distribution of dopants and elongated dopant grains infused at higher temperatures. The 35 vol% ATZ exhibited exceptional average flexural strength of 1321 MPa, surpassing previous DLP-fabricated composites. This suggests no need for increased solid loading content. The findings demonstrate the potential of DLP in producing high-performance ceramic parts with tailored properties.

Abstract:Zirconia-based materials are widely used in dentistry due to their biocompatibility and suitable mechanical and tribological behavior. Although commonly processed by subtractive manufacturing (SM), alternative techniques are being explored to reduce material waste, energy consumption and production time. 3D printing has received increasing interest for this purpose. This systematic review intends to gather information on the state of the art of additive manufacturing (AM) of zirconia-based materials for dental applications. As far as the authors know, this is the first time that a comparative analysis of these materials' properties has been performed. It was performed following the PRISMA guidelines and using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases to select studies that met the defined criteria without restrictions on publication year. Stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP) were the techniques most focused on in the literature and the ones that led to most promising outcomes. However, other techniques, such as robocasting (RC) and material jetting (MJ), have also led to good results. In all cases, the main concerns are centered on dimensional accuracy, resolution, and insufficient mechanical strength of the pieces. Despite the struggles inherent to the different 3D printing techniques, the commitment to adapt materials, procedures and workflows to these digital technologies is remarkable. Overall, the research on this topic can be seen as a disruptive technological progress with a wide range of application possibilities.

Mechanical properties, accuracy, and cytotoxicity of UV-polymerized 3D printing resins composed of Bis-EMA, UDMA, and TEGDMA

Abstract:Statement of problem: Three-dimensional printing has the potential for clinical applications, and additive manufacturing materials for dental use merit further investigation. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the properties of materials formulated with ethoxylated bisphenol A-dimethacrylate (Bis-EMA), urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA), and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) as 3D printing resins for ultraviolet digital light processing (UV-DLP) 3D printers and to characterize the mechanical and biological properties and accuracy of the printed objects. Material and methods: Ten different light-polymerized resins were formulated using Bis-EMA, UDMA, and TEGDMA. Their viscosities were measured, and only 7 resins with viscosities lower than 1500 centipoise (cP) were selected for 3D printing and further material characterization. The light-polymerized resins were printed into representative shapes using a custom-made 3D printer equipped with a 405-nm UV-DLP projector as the light source. The printed specimens were subjected to biologic, mechanical, and accuracy tests, and the data were submitted to 1-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc comparisons (α=.05). Results: Photopolymerizable resins made of Bis-EMA, UDMA, and TEGDMA were successfully formulated for 3D printing to fabricate objects of various shapes and sizes. TEGDMA served as the diluent to reduce the viscosity and increase the degree of conversion, while UDMA and Bis-EMA provided strength as demonstrated by the mechanical testing. All the printed objects passed cytotoxicity testing. The flexural strengths of the printed specimens ranged between 60 MPa and 90 MPa; flexural modulus ranged between 1.7 GPa and 2.1 GPa; and surface hardness ranged between 14.5 HV and 24.6 HV. These represent similar mechanical properties to those of currently used clinical resin materials. In the accuracy test, the resin mixture composed of 80% Bis-EMA, 10% UDMA, and 10% TEGDMA had the highest accuracy, with a 0.051-mm deviation from the original design. Conclusions: Bis-EMA, UDMA, and TEGDMA are good candidates for the formulation of 3D printing resins for dental use. The printed objects demonstrated favorable biological and mechanical properties. Further, the accuracy of the printed specimens showed potential for clinical application.
Color stability, surface, and physicochemical properties of three-dimensional printed denture base resin reinforced with different nanofillers

Abstract:Various materials have been introduced for the three-dimensional (3D) printing of dentures. In this study, the color stability and surface and physicochemical properties of 3D-printed denture base resins with four types of nanofiller particles were evaluated. Al 2 O 3 , ZnO, CeZr, and SiO 2 nanofillers were added to a 3D printable denture base-resin matrix and subjected to digital light processing. The specimens were immersed in Coke, coffee, black tea, or distilled water for 6 days. For the assessment of color differences, 6 samples were analyzed using a spectrophotometer. In a separate investigation, surface properties of 10 samples were examined, while a different set of 6 samples was used to analyze water sorption and solubility. All experimental groups exhibited higher color stability in Coke than the control group. However, the groups containing ZnO and CeZr had lower color stability in coffee and black tea than the control group. Moreover, they had agglomerated nanofillers and lower gloss than the control group. Compared with that of the control group, the contact angle of the CeZr group and microhardness of the ZnO group were not significantly different. Water sorption was higher in the Al 2 O 3 group, whereas the solubility of the experimental and control groups was not statistically significant. The results demonstrated the significant effect of ZnO and CeZr nanofillers on the color stability of the dentures when exposed to discoloring beverages. These results will facilitate the development of fillers that enhance the resistance of 3D printed denture base resins to discoloration in the oral environment.

Abstract:The future of manufacturing applications in three-dimensional (3D) printing depends on the improvement and the development of materials suitable for 3D printing technology. This study aims to develop an applicable and convenient protocol for light-curing resin used in 3D industry, which could enhance antibacterial and mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin through the combination of nano-fillers of surface modified titanium dioxide (TiO2) and micro-fillers of polyetheretherketone (PEEK). PMMA-based composite resins with various additions of TiO2 and PEEK were prepared and submitted to characterizations including mechanical properties, distribution of the fillers (TiO2 or/and PEEK) on the fractured surface, cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity, and blood compatibility assessment. These results indicated that the reinforced composite resins of PMMA (TiO2-1%-PEEK-1%) possessed the most optimized properties compared to the other groups. In addition, we found the addition of 1% of TiO2 would be an effective amount to enhance both mechanical and antibacterial properties for PMMA composite resin. Furthermore, the model printed by PMMA (TiO2-1%-PEEK-1%) composite resin showed a smooth surface and a precise resolution, indicating this functional dental restoration material would be a suitable light-curing resin in 3D industry.
