Abstract:Greenhouse gases have a significant impact on general global climate change. A self-calibrated multiharmonic measurement system based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with wavelength modulation spectroscopy, using the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, is developed and applied to measure the CO2 and H2O concentrations in the urban areas. The precision of the developed system is evaluated using the Allan variance method, and it is found that the multiharmonic can enhance the precision of the system and the first-to-third harmonics are sufficient to achieve the lowest Allan deviation. To validate its accuracy, comparison experiments with the commercial nondispersive infrared (NDIR) instrument (Li-Cor 840A) are performed and the results demonstrate the high accuracy of the TDLAS system and its consistency with the NDIR instrument. Measurements were carried out in autumn and winter of 2017 in the city center of Munich. The results indicate that the in situ measurement of the CO2 concentration in the downtown area correlates with both natural and anthropogenic activities. Due to its high precision and accuracy, the self-calibrated multiharmonic measurement system has a great potential to further study the emission and distribution of CO2 in the urban areas.

Abstract:A multiple gas detection system based on a V-cavity coupled diode laser around 1550nm has been developed. The V-cavity coupled diode laser exhibits side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 40dB and digitally switching over 20nm. The absorption lines of CO, CO2 and H2S are separately around 1567.3nm, 1573nm, 1578nm, which are distributed over the tuning range of the diode laser. The technique of tunable diode laser absorption spectrum (TDLAS) is adopted in the gas detection for the advantage of high sensitivity and resolution. What's more, the systems based on direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) and wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) are established to measure gas concentration. As a result, a linear relationship between detection signal and gas concentration is worked out and the R-square coefficient of the linear fitting is better than 0.99 for CO and CO2.

Abstract:Sensitive real-time detection of vapors produced by toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) always represents a stringent priority. Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is definitely a TIC, being widely used in various industries and as an insecticide; it is a reactive, very flammable, and highly toxic compound that affects the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, eyes, nose, throat, and also has systemic effects. Moreover, HCN is considered a blood chemical warfare agent. This study was focused toward quick detection and quantification of HCN in air using time-of-flight ion mobility spectrometry (ToF IMS). Results obtained clearly indicate that IMS can rapidly detect HCN at sub-ppmv levels in air. Ion mobility spectrometric response was obtained in the negative ion mode and presented one single distinct product ion, at reduced ion mobility K0 of 2.38 cm2 V−1 s−1. Our study demonstrated that by using a miniaturized commercial IMS system with nonradioactive ionization source model LCD-3.2E (Smiths Detection Ltd., London, UK), one can easily measure HCN at concentrations of 0.1 ppmv (0.11 mg m−3) in negative ion mode, which is far below the OSHA PEL-TWA value of 10 ppmv. Measurement range was from 0.1 to 10 ppmv and the estimated limit of detection LoD was ca. 20 ppbv (0.02 mg m−3).

Abstract:This paper presents an open-path gas sensing technique based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) for simultaneously detecting multiple gas markers in fire combustion products for the purpose of early warning of fires. To demonstrate this detection method, a dual-gas sensing system was developed by combing calibration-free direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) and a homemade three-mirror multi-pass optical system. A near-infrared (NIR) distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser emitting near 1579 nm was used as an excitation light source for simultaneously measuring dual-gas fingerprint absorption spectra of CO and CO2 in combustion products. Details of laser tuning characteristics, the cross-talk effect of CO and CO2 absorption spectra, and concentration response characteristics are initially investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Finally, various coal samples (anthracites) are used for evaluating the developed dual-gas sensor’s real-time response and combustion characteristics. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical expectation, which proves its great potential for early diagnosis and warning research of fires and practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) technology is adopted herein to detect fire gas produced in the early stage of the fire. Based on this technology, a fire warning detection system with multiple lasers and detectors is proposed. Multiple drivers input laser’s temperature and injected current data, making its output wavelength consistent with the measured gas’ absorption peak wavelengths in absorption spectroscopy. Multiple light beams are coupled to the same optical fiber. After the light beams pass through the long optical path absorption cell filled with fire gas, the beams are separated by a converter. The signals are demodulated by different detectors and further analyzed for fire warnings. After the fire warning system’s design, the system’s various hardware modules are designed, including the light source module, TDLAS controller, gas chamber module, photoelectric detector, and data collection. When the temperature remains unchanged, the output wavelength is linearly related to the injected current. When the injected current remains unchanged, the output wavelength is linearly related to the operating temperature. With a semiconductor laser’s injected current of 40 mA, the initial temperature of 38.6 °C, and the output wavelength of 1578.16 nm, the output wavelength increases continuously as the temperature increases. The harmonic signal amplitude after gas absorption is positively correlated with the measured gas concentration, indicating that the second harmonic signals can estimate the fire gas concentration.

Abstract:Hydrogen chloride (HCl) monitoring during combustion/gasification of biomass fuels and municipal solid waste, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and food residues, is demanded to avoid the adverse effect of HCl to furnace operation and to improve the quality of the gas products. Infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (IR-TDLAS) is a feasible nonintrusive in-situ method for HCl measurements in harsh environments. In the present work, the measurement was performed using the R(3) line of the ν 2 vibrational band of HCl at 5739.25 cm –1 (1742.4 nm). Water vapor is ubiquitous in combustion/gasification environments, and its spectral interference is one of the most common challenges for IR-TDLAS. Spectral analysis based on the current well-known databases was found to be insufficient to achieve an accurate measurement. The lack of accurate temperature-dependent water spectra can introduce thousands parts per million (ppm) HCl overestimation. For the first time, accurate spectroscopic data of temperature-dependent water spectra near 5739.3 cm –1 were obtained based on a systematic experimental investigation of the hot water lines in a well-controlled, hot flue gas with a temperature varying from 1100 to 1950 K. With the accurate knowledge of hot water interference, the HCl TDLAS system can achieve a detection limit of about 100 ppm⋅m at around 1500 K, and simultaneously the gas temperature can be derived. The technique was applied to measure the temporally resolved HCl release and local temperature over burning PVC particles in hot flue gas at 1790 K.

Abstract:Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a toxic industrial chemical, necessitating low-level detection capabilities for safety and environmental monitoring. This study introduces a novel approach for detecting hydrogen cyanide (HCN) using a clamp-type custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) integrated with a dual-tube acoustic micro-resonator (AmR) for enhanced photoacoustic gas sensing. The design and optimization of the AmR geometry were guided by theoretical simulation and experimental validation, resulting in a robust on-beam QEPAS (Quartz-Enhanced Photoacoustic Spectroscopy) configuration. To boost the QEPAS sensitivity, an Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) was incorporated, amplifying the laser power by approximately 286 times. Additionally, a transformer-based U-shaped neural network, a machine learning filter, was employed to refine the photoacoustic signal and reduce background noise effectively. This combination yielded a significantly low detection limit for HCN at 0.89 parts per billion (ppb) with a rapid response time of 1 second, marking a substantial advancement in optical gas sensing technologies. Key modifications to the QTF and innovative use of AmR lengths were validated under various experimental conditions, affirming the system's capabilities for real-time, high-sensitivity environmental monitoring and industrial safety applications. This work not only demonstrates significant enhancements in QEPAS but also highlights the potential for further technological advancements in portable gas detection systems.

Abstract:During industrial operations and in confined places, carbon monoxide (CO) may collect in harmful proportions if ventilation is insufficient or appliances are not properly maintained. When the concentration of CO is too high, it might result in suffocation, coma, or even death. The detection of tiny concentrations of CO plays an important role in safe production. Due to the selective absorption of specific wavelengths of light by gas molecules, lasers have a wide range of applications in the field of gas detection. In this paper, a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) system for CO detection was constructed using an interband cascaded laser (ICL) with a central wavelength of 4.625 μm. The modulated signal generated by the FPGA module was output to the laser controller to modulate the laser. The signal received by the detector was input to the FPGA module. After lock-in amplification, the second harmonic signal of high frequency modulation was output. Several concentrations of CO that were dispersed via static gas distribution were identified. A CO detection system with an open optical path was constructed, and the detection distance was about 8 m. The minimum detectable concentration is around 10.32 ppmm. The concentration of CO in the open optical path was 510.6 ppmm, according to the calibration of the detected concentration. The remote detection system based on TDLAS using an ICL can be used to monitor CO in the open optical path.

Abstract:CO concentration real-time monitoring in combustion process has great significance in improving combustion efficiency and controlling combustion emissions. No CO-spectroscopy solid state sensors are available at the high temperature of 1600K-2000K in the flames. Gas sensing based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with the advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity, quick response and non-intrusiveness offers the possibility for on-line measurement in combustion environment. CO absorption line located at 2302.12nm is selected for measurement by direct absorption method in premixed C3H8/Air flat flame. Experiment results show that, when equivalence ratio is larger than one, the concentration of CO in the flame is increased with the increase of equivalence ratio. It proves that this method can be used on combustion environment.

Abstract:As a new form of energy, hydrogen (H2) has clean and green features, and the detection of H2 has been a hot topic in recent years. However, the lack of suitable laser sources and the weak optical absorption of H2 limit the research concerning its detection. In this study, a continuous-wave distributed feedback (CW-DFB) diode laser was employed for sensing H2. Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) was adopted as the detection technique. The strongest H2 absorption line, located at 4712.90 cm−1 (2121.83 nm, line strength: 3.19 × 10−26 cm−1/cm−2 × molec), was selected. We propose a H2-TDLAS sensor based on the wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) technique and a Herriott multipass gas cell (HMPC) with an optical length of 10.13 m to achieve a sensitive detection. The WMS technique and second harmonic (2f) demodulation technique were utilized to suppress system noise and simplify the data processing. The 2f signal of the H2-TDLAS sensor, with respect to different H2 concentrations, was measured when the laser wavelength modulation depth was at the optimal value of 0.016 cm−1. The system’s signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and minimum detection limit (MDL) were improved from 248.02 and 0.40% to 509.55 and 0.20%, respectively, by applying Daubechies (DB) wavelet denoising, resulting in 10 vanishing moments. The Allan variance was calculated, and the optimum MDL of 522.02 ppm was obtained when the integration time of the system was 36 s.

Abstract:The conventional fire detection methods mainly produce an alarm through detecting the changes in smoke concentration, flame radiation, heat and other physical parameters in the environment, but are unable to provide an early warning of a fire emergency. We have designed a gas fire detection system with a high detection sensitivity and high selectivity using the tunable semiconductor diode laser as a light source and combining wavelength modulation and harmonic detection technology. This system can invert the second harmonic signal obtained to obtain the concentration of carbon monoxide gas (a fire characteristic gas) so as to provide an early warning of fire. We reduce the system offset noise and the background noise generated due to the laser interference by deducting the system background spectrum lines from the second harmonic signal. This can also eliminate the interference of other gas spectral lines to a large extent. We detected the concentration of the carbon monoxide gas generated in smoldering sandalwood fire and open beech wood fire with the homemade fire simulator, and tested the lowest detectable limit of system. The test results show that the lowest detectable limit can reach 5×10-6; the system can maintain stable operation for a long period of time and can automatically trigger a water mist fire extinguishing system, which can fully meet the needs of early fire warning.

Abstract:A carbon monoxide (CO) sensing system based on hollow‐core antiresonant fiber (HC‐ARF) is developed using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) technology. A HC‐ARF with length of 75 cm is applied as light transmission passage and gas chamber. Compared with conventional multipass cell, HC‐ARF has the advantages of compact volume, low cost, steady transmission, and simple optical alignment. Two techniques of direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) and wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) were used respectively. In DAS, the minimum detection limit (MDL) was 12251.04 ppm. In WMS, the modulation depth of this HC‐ARF based CO‐TDLAS sensor was optimized to be 0.13 cm−1 and the R‐squared numeric of the linear relationship between the peak of the 2 f signal and the gas concentration was 0.99, indicating that the system has a nice linear responsiveness to the CO gas concentration. Finally, the MDL of the sensor was calculated to be 196.33 ppm.

Abstract:In a combustion reaction of hydrocarbon fuel, carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas species that is closely related to air pollution generation and combustion efficiency. It has a trade-off with nitrogen oxide and increases rapidly in case of incomplete combustion or in fuel-rich (Φ > 1) environments. Therefore, it is essential to measure CO concentration in order to optimize the combustion condition. In the case of a steel annealing system, the combustion environment is maintained in a deoxidation atmosphere to prevent the formation of an oxide layer on the steel sheet surface. However, it is difficult to measure the CO concentration in a combustion furnace in real-time because of the harsh environment in the furnace. Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy, which has the advantages of non-invasiveness, fast response, and in situ measurement-based optical measurement, is highly attractive for measuring the concentration of a certain gas species in a combustion environment. In this study, a combustion system of a partially premixed flamed burner was designed to control the equivalence ratio for fuel-rich conditions. CO concentration was measured using a distributed feedback laser with a wavenumber of 4300.7 cm−1 in the mid-infrared region. The results showed that the CO concentration measured at an equivalence ratio of 1.15 to 1.50 was 0.495% to 6.139%. The detection limit in the combustion environment was analyzed at a path length of 190 cm and an internal temperature of 733 K. The ranges of the peak absorbance were derived as 0.064 and 0.787, which were within the theoretical bounds of 10−3 and 0.80 when the equivalence ratio was varied from 1.15 to 1.50.

Abstract:A one-dimensional photonic crystal is prepared from porous silicon (pSi) and impregnated with a chemically specific colorimetric indicator dye to provide a self-referenced vapor sensor for the selective detection of hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and the chemical nerve agent diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP). The photonic crystal is prepared with two stop bands: one that coincides with the optical absorbance of the relevant activated indicator dye and the other in a spectrally "clear" region, to provide a reference. The inner pore walls of the pSi sample are then modified with octadecylsilane to provide a hydrophobic interior, and the indicator dye of interest is then loaded into the mesoporous matrix. Remote analyte detection is achieved by measurement of the intensity ratio of the two stop bands in the white light reflectance spectrum, which provides a means to reliably detect colorimetric changes in the indicator dye. Indicator dyes were chosen for their specificity for the relevant agents: rhodamine-imidazole (RDI) for HF and DFP, and monocyanocobinamide (MCbi) for HCN. The ratiometric readout allows detection of HF and HCN at concentrations (14 and 5 ppm, respectively) that are below their respective IDLH (immediately dangerous to life and health) concentrations (30 ppm for HF; 50 ppm for HCN); detection of DFP at a concentration of 114 ppb is also demonstrated. The approach is insensitive to potential interferents such as ammonia, hydrogen chloride, octane, and the 43-component mixture of VOCs known as EPA TO-14A, and to variations in relative humidity (20–80% RH). Detection of HF and HCN spiked into the complex mixture EPA TO-14A is demonstrated. Abstract:Non-contact and real-time measurements for species concentration and temperature with high-time resolution in real-field combustion environments are desired. A laser absorption system was developed for simultaneous sensing of CO, H2O concentrations and temperature with 1 kHz in a centrally staged kerosene-fueled combustor. An absorption feature near 4.98 μm in the mid-infrared region was selected for CO detection to minimize spectral interference with other combustion species in the kerosene combustion environment. Two spectral lines of H2O near 1.4 [[EQUATION]] were used for temperature and H2O detection using a direct scan absorption strategy. The method of the developed multi-parameter measurement was validated in a laboratory-scale plat flame under various equivalence ratios. Comparisons were made between the experimental and theoretical results within the error of 5%. Real-field, time-resolved and in-situ measurements of temperature, H2O and CO concentration in the kerosene-fueled staged combustor were demonstrated. The transient characteristics of CO emission in different conditions were captured experimentally. It is found that the fluctuation amplitude of CO concentration increases as the equivalent ratio decreases during the pilot stage work only. There is a dramatic rise in CO emissions during the transition of combustion conditions. Strong fluctuation occurs with a low frequency at 32 Hz near lean blowoff. The location of the flame surface and the dynamic pressure have a significant coupling relationship with CO emission by analyzing measured data with high time resolution simultaneously.

Abstract:The technique based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) has been developed to realize the real-time and dynamic measurement of the combustion-generated pollutants. In this paper the fundamental of the measurement using TDLAS is presented. By setting up the mathematic model of CO2 absorption line at 6359.97 cm-1 and making use of the parameters from the high-resolution transmission molecular absorption database, the effects of scanning step length, temperature, pressure and absorbance random error on the gas concentration measurement are discussed. The minimum detectivity as a function of temperature and pressure is also analyzed. The result can be useful for the practical application and further study.

Abstract:We report the development of a novel laser absorption diagnostic for accurate, time-resolved and in situ measurement of various hydrocarbon fuels in combustion systems. This diagnostic method utilized a wavelength-tunable interband cascade laser operated near 3.41 mu m, providing improved performance in several aspects over the conventional 3.39-mu m He-Ne gas laser diagnostic. First, it enabled a simplified and more compact experimental setup that significantly reduced the measurement complexity. Second, it improved the long-term stability over the 3.39-mu m diagnostic by at least a factor of 2, leading to substantially reduced measurement uncertainties. Lastly, the new diagnostic also avoided a cluster of CH4 transitions that coincide with the He-Ne wavelength, and hence minimized CH4 interference in other hydrocarbon measurements. Absorption cross-sections of a variety of hydrocarbons at both 3.39 and 3.41 mu m were measured in a high-purity shock tube over 531-1659 K, 0.34-3.1 atm, and reported here as functions of temperature. Example applications of this new diagnostic in shock tube pyrolysis studies of methylcyclohexane, n-heptane and iso-octane are also presented. These studies have yielded an improved value of the overall decomposition rate constant of methylcyclohexane as k(d) = 3.3 x 10(15) exp(-38000K/T)s(-1)+28%/-34%, which is valid over 1260-1400 K and near 1.5 atm.
