Abstract:In lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical reaction between the electrodes and lithium is a critical process that controls the capacity, cyclability and reliability of the battery. Despite intensive study, the atomistic mechanism of the electrochemical reactions occurring in these solid-state electrodes remains unclear. Here, we show that in situ transmission electron microscopy can be used to study the dynamic lithiation process of single-crystal silicon with atomic resolution. We observe a sharp interface (∼1 nm thick) between the crystalline silicon and an amorphous Li x Si alloy. The lithiation kinetics are controlled by the migration of the interface, which occurs through a ledge mechanism involving the lateral movement of ledges on the close-packed {111} atomic planes. Such ledge flow processes produce the amorphous Li x Si alloy through layer-by-layer peeling of the {111} atomic facets, resulting in the orientation-dependent mobility of the interfaces.
Sandwich-Lithiation and Longitudinal Crack in Amorphous Silicon Coated on Carbon Nanofibers

Abstract:Silicon-carbon nanofibers coaxial sponge, with strong mechanical integrity and improved electronic conductivity, is a promising anode structure to apply into commercial high-capacity lithium ion batteries. We characterized the electrochemical and mechanical behaviors of amorphous silicon-coated carbon nanofibers (a-Si/CNFs) with in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that lithiation of the a-Si coating layer occurred from the surface and the a-Si/CNF interface concurrently, and propagated toward the center of the a-Si layer. Such a process leads to a sandwiched Li(x)Si/Si/Li(x)Si structure, indicating fast Li transport through the a-Si/CNF interface. Nanocracks and sponge-like structures developed in the a-Si layer during the lithiation-delithiation cycles. Lithiation of the a-Si layer sealed in the hollow CNF was also observed, but at a much lower speed than the counterpart of the a-Si layer coated on the CNF surface. An analytical solution of the stress field was formulated based on the continuum theory of finite deformation, explaining the experimental observation of longitudinal crack formation and general mechanical degradation mechanism in a-Si/CNF electrode.
Molecular dynamic investigation of the structure and stress in crystalline and amorphous silicon during lithiation

Abstract:<p>Silicon (Si) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries with a high specific capacity, but the severe volume expansion and mechanical stress generated during electrochemical cycling hinders its practical application. Considering the coupled effect between electrochemical reaction and mechanical stress, the structure and stress evolution in lithiated crystalline and amorphous Si was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that the lithiation in both crystalline and amorphous Si is featured by the shift of the phase boundary. Lithiation is favoured along 〈1 1 0〉 crystallographic orientation in crystalline Si due to the atomic channels along this direction. The lithiation induced compressive stress is accumulated at the Si-Li phase boundary of crystalline Si and reaches −6 GPa, which slows down the lithiation process. On the other hand, the stress in amorphous Si can be mitigated through deformation at the phase boundary, and the lithiation speed is higher than that in crystalline Si. The lithiation in crystalline Si is related to a peeling-off mechanism, and Si clusters form and disintegrate during lithiation. More Si clusters are generated during the lithiation in crystalline Si than in amorphous Si.</p>

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized portable electronics and will be a key to electrifying transport vehicles and delivering renewable electricity. Amorphous silicon (a-Si) is being intensively studied as a high-capacity anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Its lithiation has been widely thought to occur through a single-phase mechanism with gentle Li profiles, thus offering a significant potential for mitigating pulverization and capacity fade. Here, we discover a surprising two-phase process of electrochemical lithiation in a-Si by using in situ transmission electron microscopy. The lithiation occurs by the movement of a sharp phase boundary between the a-Si reactant and an amorphous LixSi (a-LixSi, x similar to 2.5) product. Such a striking amorphous-amorphous interface exists until the remaining a-Si is consumed. Then a second step of lithiation sets in without a visible interface, resulting in the final product of a-LixSi (x similar to 3.75). We show that the two-phase lithiation can be the fundamental mechanism underpinning the anomalous morphological change of microfabricated a-Si electrodes, i.e., from a disk shape to a dome shape. Our results represent a significant step toward the understanding of the electrochemically driven reaction and degradation in amorphous materials, which is critical to the development of microstructurally stable electrodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Silicon is considered as a promising anode material for the next-generation lithium-ion battery (LIB) due to its high capacity at nanoscale. However, silicon expands up to 300% during lithiation, which induces high stresses and leads to fractures. To design silicon nanostructures that could minimize fracture, it is important to understand and characterize stress states in the silicon nanostructures during lithiation. Synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction has proven to be effective in revealing insights of mechanical stress and other mechanics considerations in small-scale crystalline structures used in many important technological applications, such as microelectronics, nanotechnology, and energy systems. In the present study, an in situ synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction experiment was conducted to elucidate the mechanical stress states during the first electrochemical cycle of lithiation in single-crystalline silicon nanowires (SiNWs) in an LIB test cell. Morphological changes in the SiNWs at different levels of lithiation were also studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found from SEM observation that lithiation commenced predominantly at the top surface of SiNWs followed by further progression toward the bottom of the SiNWs gradually. The hydrostatic stress of the crystalline core of the SiNWs at different levels of electrochemical lithiation was determined using the in situ synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction technique. We found that the crystalline core of the SiNWs became highly compressive (up to -325.5 MPa) once lithiation started. This finding helps unravel insights about mechanical stress states in the SiNWs during the electrochemical lithiation, which could potentially pave the path toward the fracture-free design of silicon nanostructure anode materials in the next-generation LIB.

Abstract:We report in situ measurements of stress evolution in a silicon thin-film electrode during electrochemical lithiation and delithiation by using the Multi-beam Optical Sensor (MOS) technique. Upon lithiation, due to substrate constraint, the silicon electrode initially undergoes elastic deformation, resulting in rapid rise of compressive stress. The electrode begins to deform plastically at a compressive stress of ca. -1.75 GPa; subsequent lithiation results in continued plastic strain, dissipating mechanical energy. Upon delithiation, the electrode first undergoes elastic straining in the opposite direction, leading to a tensile stress of ca. 1 GPa; subsequently, it deforms plastically during the rest of delithiation. The plastic flow stress evolves continuously with lithium concentration. Thus, mechanical energy is dissipated in plastic deformation during both lithiation and delithiation, and it can be calculated from the stress measurements; we show that it is comparable to the polarization loss. Upon current interrupt, both the film stress and the electrode potential relax with similar time-constants, suggesting that stress contributes significantly to the chemical potential of lithiated-silicon.

Abstract:Surface passivation has become a routine strategy of design to mitigate the chemomechanical degradation of high-capacity electrodes by regulating the electrochemical process of lithiation and managing the associated deformation dynamics. Oxides are the prevalent materials used for surface coating. Lithiation of SiO2 leads to drastic changes in its electro-chemo-mechanical properties from an electronic insulator and a brittle material in its pure form to a conductor and a material sustainable of large deformation in the lithiated form. We synthesized SiO2-coated SiC nanowires that allow us to focus on the lithiation behavior of the sub-10 nm SiO2 thin coating. We systematically investigate the structural evolution, the electronic conduction and ionic transport properties, and the deformation pattern of lithiated SiO2 through coordinated in situ transmission electron microcopy experiments, first-principles computation, and continuum theories. We observe the stress-mediated reaction that induces inhomogeneous growth of SiO2. The results provide fundamental perspectives on the chemomechanical behaviors of oxides used in the surface coating of Li-ion technologies.

Abstract:To develop high-capacity Li-ion batteries, volume expansion and material degradation of Si anodes have been attracting increasing attention. However, the effects of phase structures and geometrical constraints on the failure mechanism of lithiated Si have not been well understood. Considering phase boundaries formed during electrochemical cycles, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the failure behaviour and microstructural evolution of single-phase and dual-phase (core–shell) lithiated Si structures when subjected to biaxial tensile stress. During lithiation, lithiated Si structures show a brittle-to-ductile transition. The brittle fracture is associated with nanoscale cavitation and void propagation. The ductility of lithiated Si structures increases with Li content due to the rearrangement of Li atoms. Compared with single-phase lithiated Si, dual-phase structures tend to fracture owing to inhomogeneous deformation and nanoscale cavitation. On the other hand, the ductility of lithiated Si decreases during delithiation, especially in dual-phase structures. This work provides a better understanding of the structure–property relationship of lithiated Si in charging-discharging cycles and strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of Si-based electrodes.

Abstract:Recent experiments have revealed that external bending breaks the symmetry of lithiation in germanium nanowires. However, the effects of external stress on lithiation in silicon and the associated underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we have performed a series of large-scale atomistic simulations based on a newly developed reactive force field (ReaxFF) to investigate the effects of external stress on the interfacial reactions and diffusion (two dominant processes during lithiation) of silicon anodes. The simulation results quantitatively show the variations in the migration velocity of the phase boundary (i.e., the reaction front during lithiation) and the diffusivity of lithium (in crystalline and amorphous lithiated silicon) as a function of the external stress and indicate that the tensile stress accelerates the lithiation rate while the compressive stress retards it. Furthermore, comparing the large-scale ReaxFF-based simulations and previous ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations indicated that large samples and long duration times are crucially important and indispensable for accurately calculating the diffusivity of amorphous lithiated silicon under external stress. These results not only provide a fundamental understanding of the intimate coupling between mechanical stress and lithiation kinetics but also open avenues for optimizing batteries to control/alter the lithiation rate of silicon anodes by applying external mechanical stresses.

Abstract:Understanding microscale stress characterization of integrated circuits and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) structures is essential for the successful design and operation of the devices. In this paper, we introduce the use of Raman spectroscopy to measure the stress in single-crystal silicon. The constant coefficient between stress and Raman shift was measured, which is -462 in our experiment case. The effect of laser heating of the sample was studied and discussed. Normally, low laser power should be used on the stress measurement.

Abstract:Silicon-based semiconductor materials, especially {001} silicon are the main functional materials in the electronic information industry. Residual stress plays an important role in the reliability of semiconductor devices. However, the stress state is often simplified, especially when the effect of shear stress on Raman wavenumber is neglected. In this study, the relationship between the Raman wavenumber and the plane stress components of typical crystal planes is established. It is observed that only the Raman wavenumber of the {001} plane has nothing to do with plane shear stress. Finally, a calibration experiment was carried out to validate the theoretical deduction. Deformation and failure of lithiated Si electrodes of Li-ion batteries

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is widely regarded as one of the most promising anode materials for Li ion battery due to its high theoretical specific capacity. However, the volume change (~300%) during lithiation/delithiation results in poor mechanical integrity, which impedes its commercialization. To address this issue, a better understanding of the atomistic mechanisms responsible for the volume expansion is necessary. In this work, the atomic structure and stress evolution during lithiation/delithiation was investigated on a Si film (2.7 nm). Steep stress gradients were observed when the lithium content in the anode is very low (<Li0.5Si). Plastic flow and stress relaxation are dominant at higher Li concentrations. The microstructure evolution during lithiation process is associated with the break of covalent amorphous structure into small clusters, when Li concentration exceeds ~Li0.5Si. At a low Li concentration, the sharp stress increase is due to the elastic deformation of the covalent Si lattice. The radial distribution function (RDF) analysis indicates a defective amorphous structure in silicon film after a complete lithiation/delithiation cycle, contributing to the capacity loss. These results are believed to be able to help improve the materials selection and design of Li ion batteries.

Abstract:We report real-time average stress measurements on composite silicon electrodes made with two different binders [Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)] during electrochemical lithiation and delithiation. During galvanostatic lithiation at very slow rates, the stress in a CMC-based electrode becomes compressive and increases to 70 MPa, where it reaches a plateau and increases slowly thereafter with capacity. The PVDF-based electrode exhibits similar behavior, although with lower peak compressive stress of about 12 MPa. These initial experiments indicate that the stress evolution in a Si composite electrode depends strongly on the mechanical properties of the binder. Stress data obtained from a series of lithiation/delithiation cycles suggests plasticity induced irreversible shape changes in contacting Si particles, and as a result, the stress response of the system during any given lithiation/delithiation cycle depends on the cycling history of the electrode. While these results constitute the first in-situ stress measurements on composite Si electrodes during electrochemical cycling, the diagnostic technique described herein can be used to assess the mechanical response of a composite electrode made with other active material/binder combinations.
On plastic deformation and fracture in Si films during electrochemical lithiation/delithiation cycling

Abstract:An in situ study of deformation, fracture, and fatigue behavior of silicon as a lithium-ion battery electrode material is presented. Thin films (100-200 nm) of silicon are cycled in a half-cell configuration with lithium metal foil as counter/reference electrode, with 1M lithium hexafluorophosphate in ethylene carbonate, diethylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate solution (1:1:1, wt.%) as electrolyte. Stress evolution in the Si thin-film electrodes during electrochemical lithiation and delithiation is measured by monitoring the substrate curvature using the multi-beam optical sensing method. The stress measurements have been corrected for contributions from residual stress arising from sputter-deposition. An indirect method for estimating the potential errors due to formation of the solid-electrolyte-interphase layer and surface charge on the stress measurements was presented. The films undergo extensive inelastic deformation during lithiation and delithiation. The peak compressive stress during lithiation was 1.48 GPa. The stress data along with the electron microscopy observations are used to estimate an upper bound fracture resistance of lithiated Si, which is approximately 9-11 J/m^2. Fracture initiation and crack density evolution as a function of cycle number is also reported.

Abstract:Alloying-type anodes are significantly governed by their chemo-mechanical performance during the electrochemical cycling. The reaction-induced huge volumetric change of these anodes may cause material degradation and failure under mechanical constraints. Here, we investigate the stress-dependent lithiation behavior of amorphous Si (a-Si) anodes using molecular dynamics simulations. It is indicated that a-Si anodes can sustain higher hydrostatic stress than biaxial/uniaxial ones without the occurrence of mechanical failure. Thermodynamic and electrochemical calculations demonstrate that although the lithiation procedure also affects the thermodynamic stability of a-Si anodes, it is mainly dominated by the external mean stresses. Compressive stress is confirmed to destabilize a-Si anodes and further trigger their capacity fading. Compared with our atomistic simulations, previous continuum models underestimate the open-cell potentials of a-Si anodes, due to their ignored large volumetric deformation at higher stresses and Li concentrations. This computational study provides the intensive atomic-level understanding of the stress-dependent lithiation behavior of a-Si anodes.

Abstract:Stress is a key to controlling the electro-optical properties of semiconductor devices based on strain engineering. Micro-Raman spectroscopy is regarded as an effective technique of non-destructive measurement for the stress in semiconductor material. What the results using traditional Raman methods, however, are usually the sum of in-plane principal stress, or some form of equivalent stress, on a specific crystal plane. It is regarded far from possible to detect any stress components using Raman on a random crystal plane. This work presented a method of stress analysis based on angle-resolved oblique backscattering micro-Raman spectroscopy. A general physical-mechanical model was proposed by solving the equation of lattice dynamics in the sample coordinate system and then performing Raman selection in the eigenvector coordinate system. Using this model and considering the factors including refraction, polarization diversion, and numerical aperture (NA), this work established the analytic relationship between the increment of polarized Raman shift and all the stress components on a random crystal plane (taking {100} plane of monocrystalline silicon as an example) under any stress state. The stress component results of verification experiments quite agreed with their corresponding theoretical resolutions. It proved that the proposed method based on angle-resolved oblique backscattering micro-Raman spectroscopy, including both the model and the device, solved the widely recognized problem that the stress components of monocrystalline silicon, especially on {100} crystal plane, could not be decoupled by Raman.

Abstract:A microfabricated capillary electrophoresis device for velocity measurements of flowing particles is presented. It consists of a 1 x 128 planar waveguide beam splitter monolithically integrated with an electrically insulated fluidic channel network for fluorescence excitation at multiple points. Stray light rejection structures are included in order to suppress unwanted light between the detection regions. The emission pattern of particles passing the detection region was collected by a photomultiplier tube that was placed in close proximity to the channel, thereby avoiding the use of transfer optics. The integrated planar waveguide beam splitter was, furthermore, permanently connected to the light source by a glued-on optical fiber, to achieve a robust and alignment-free operation of the system. The velocity was measured using a Fourier transformation with a Shah function, since the response of the light array was designed to approximate a square profile. Deviations from this response were observed as a result of the multimode nature of the integrated waveguides.

Abstract:Structural changes in amorphous LixSi during the initial lithiation of single crystal Si to amorphous LixSi were investigated as a function of Li flux and total charge using solid-state 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Single crystal (100) Si wafers were used as a model system in this study, as the Li flux could be precisely controlled and uniformly distributed across the surface of the wafer. It was observed that peak shifts in solid-state 7Li NMR spectra varied as a function of the Li flux during the initial lithiation and stayed constant for samples of the same Li flux regardless of the total charge applied to the electrodes. We conclude from these results that the Li concentration in LixSi stays constant for a given flux regardless of the total coulombic charge applied to the electrode. The results from this study help better understand the kinetics, the reaction mechanisms, and the kinetic modeling of chemical reactions at the reaction front during the initial lithiation of Si (100).
In Situ Measurements of Stress-Potential Coupling in Lithiated Silicon

Abstract:An analysis of the dependence of electric potential on the state of stress of a lithiated-silicon electrode is presented. Based on the Larché and Cahn chemical potential for a solid solution, a thermodynamic argument is made for the existence of the stress-potential coupling in lithiated-silicon; based on the known properties of the material, the magnitude of the coupling is estimated to be ca. 60 mV/GPa in thin-film geometry. An experimental investigation is carried out on silicon thin-film electrodes in which the stress is measured in situ during electrochemical lithiation and delithiation. By progressively varying the stress through incremental delithiation, the relation between stress change and electric-potential change is measured to be 100 - 120 mV/GPa, which is of the same order of magnitude as the prediction of the analysis. The importance of the coupling is discussed in interpreting the hysteresis observed in potential vs. state-of-charge plots, and the role of stress in modifying the maximum charge capacity of a silicon electrode under stress.
