Abstract:Industrial solid waste is characterized by complex mineral phases and various components. Low-carbon cementitious materials can be prepared through precise regulation based on the material composition and properties of various industrial solid wastes. In this study, electrolytic manganese residue (EMR), carbide slag (CS), and granulated blast-furnace slag (GBFS) were used as alternatives to cement to prepare multicomponent solid waste cementitious materials. The effects of the proportions of EMR and CS on the cementitious activity of GBFS and the activation mechanism of alkali and sulfur were studied. The results showed that with increasing EMR content, the strength first increased and then decreased. At a GBFS content of 20%, CS content of 2%, and EMR content of 8%, the compressive strength was highest, reaching 45.5 MPa after 28 days of curing, mainly because the OH− in CS and SO42− in EMR synergistically stimulated the active components in GBFS. Hydrated products such as ettringite and hydrated calcium silicate (C–S–H gel) were generated and interlaced with each other to improve the densification of the mortar. Overall, the proposed system provides an avenue to reduce or replace the production of cement clinker and achieve the high-value-added utilization of industrial solid waste.

Abstract:The resource utilization of solid wastes such as soda residue (SR), carbide slag (CS), and iron tailings was improved in this study, which combined iron tailings aggregate to prepare the solid waste-based concrete (SCT) based on the previously developed SR-CS co-activated blast furnace slag-fly ash binder. Considering various factors such as composition of binder, water-binder ratio, and aggregate type, the development rule of mechanical properties of SCT was revealed through the tests of cube compressive strength (fcu), axial compressive strength (fcp), splitting tensile strength (fct), flexural strength (fcf), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and the compressive constitutive relationship was established through the compressive stress–strain test. The results demonstrated that the early compressive strength of SCT was slightly low, which could be improved through suitable heat curing (60-75℃@12 h) and would not produce an unfavorable effect on its late strength. SCT exhibited excellent axial compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths, where the 28d values fcp, fct, and fcf were 86.8 ± 3.2%, 11.5 ± 0.8%, and 14.7 ± 0.7% of fcu, i.e., higher than that of Portland cement concrete (PCC) with the same grade. The 28d UPV of SCT was 3.677–4.311 km/s, indicating good compactness; thus, SCT could be defined as high-quality concrete. SCT had a relatively longer plastic section during uniaxial compression and showed significant brittleness after peak stress. Its elastic modulus (13.12–19.13 GPa) was positively correlated with compressive strength (20.3–34.4 MPa) and was lower than that of PCC with the same grade. The prediction model of fcu, its quantitative relationships with fcp, fct, and fcf, and the constitutive relationship under uniaxial compression were established by statistical regression, which agreed with the test results. Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Calcium Sulfate Whisker-Reinforced Cement-Based Composites

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the effect of calcium sulfate whisker (CSW) on the properties and microstructure of cement-based composites. Further, nanosilica (NS) was used as a comparison. The results show that the compressive strength and fracture toughness of cement-based composites increased by 10.3% and 10.2%, respectively, with 2% CSW. The flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, and fracture energy increased by 79.7, 34.8 and 28.7%, respectively, with 1% CSW. With the addition of CSW, shrinkage deformation was aggravated, and the capillary water absorption coefficients were clearly reduced. Compared with NS, CSW-reinforced cement-based composites show better tensile, flexural, and fracture properties and smaller shrinkage deformations and capillary water absorption coefficients. The residual mechanical properties of all groups improve when the treating temperature is lower than 400 °C and decline rapidly when the temperature goes over 600 °C. When treated at 900 °C, the residual mechanical properties are 40% less than those at ambient temperature, with the NS group showing the best performance, followed by the control group and the CSW group. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests show that the addition of CSW improves the microstructure of the matrix. CSW can reinforce and toughen composites by generating ettringite and whisker pullout, whisker breakage, crack bridging, and crack deflection at the microstructure level.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to reduce the stockpile of steel slag, which is a solid waste generated in the steelmaking process, and promote the resource utilization of steel slag powder (SSP) in construction projects. Experimental research was conducted on SSP and fly ash (FA) as supplementary cementitious materials. Composite cement paste samples were prepared to investigate the effects of the water-to-binder ratio and cement-substitution rate on the macroscopic mechanical properties, including the setting time, fluidity, flexural strength, and compressive strength of the prepared paste. The mineral composition in the raw materials was measured using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and a micro-morphological and structural analysis of the hydrated cementitious material samples was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the SEM and Image Pro Plus (IPP) image analysis techniques were combined for a quantitative analysis of the microstructure. The results showed that the addition of FA and SSP delayed the hydration of cement, thereby improving the flowability of the composite paste. Under the same curing age and cement substitution rate, the sample strength decreased with increasing water-to-binder ratio. Under the same water-to-binder ratio and curing age, the variations in the flexural and compressive strengths of the SSP group samples were inconsistent in the early and later stages, and the sample group with 20% SSP exhibited optimal mechanical strength in the later stage. The microscopic results showed that the needle-like AFt crystals in the hydrated pores decreased in number with the increase in the SSP content. The hydration products of the FA–SSP admixture, such as C–S–H gel and RO phase, acted as pore fillers in alkaline environments. When the water-to-binder ratio was 0.4 and the FA-to-SSP ratio was 1:1 to replace 40% cement, the performance of the hardened cement paste was the best among all the test groups containing both FA and SSP. This study provides a theoretical basis for the practical application of SSP and FA as cementitious materials in construction-related fields.

Abstract:Solid waste recycling is an important research direction. Ceramic wastes are stable, robust, and highly resistant to degradation when used as aggregates. Modified sulfur presents the properties of rapid hardening, melt recyclability, and anhydrous involvement when used in polymers. This study aims to prepare a solid waste polymer with excellent mechanical properties on the basis of these two material properties. Experiments on compressive and splitting tensile strengths of sulfur-based polymers with waste ceramics as fine aggregate were conducted at a mass content of 60%, 65%, 70%, 75%, and 80% and then compared with sulfur-based polymers with standard and river sands as the fine aggregate. Results showed that the strength of the polymer with waste ceramics as the fine aggregate is greater than that when standard and river sands are used as the fine aggregate. The compressive strength of the waste ceramic group reached a maximum of 74.8 MPa at an aggregate content of 70%wt and the splitting tensile strength reached a maximum of 5.1 MPa at an aggregate content of 75%wt in 24 h. The ceramics and sulfur demonstrated a satisfactory matching effect on the formation of polymers with uniform and dense internal structure. The distribution of the pore number produced two trends with certain boundaries when changes in strength are produced. Small porosity and average radius of pores correspond to enhanced strength. Finally, the formula for calculating the compressive strength of sulfur-based polymers of ceramic fine aggregates was established according to packing theory with minimal error.

Abstract:The by-product of oil desulfurization, sulfur, can be used as an eco-friendly material to replace cement. In this study, waste rubber-modified sulfur-fly ash-sand composites (WRMSFSC) were prepared by waste rubber, modified sulfur, fly ash, and sand. The effect of percentage of modified sulfur and waste rubber on the mechanical properties of WRMSFSC were investigated. The pore size distribution, mineralogy phases, microstructure, and thermal properties of WRMSFSC were characterized by NMR, XRD, FTIR , SEM , and DSC. Results indicated that the compressive and flexural bonding strength of WRMSFSC were enhanced with the increase of modified sulfur content. The flexural bonding strength of WRMSFSC containing only 2% of waste rubber increased by approximately 48.34%. Microscopic results showed that the number of macropores (>1 μm) and capillary pores (0.1–1 μm) in WRMSFSC were significantly reduced with the increase of modified sulfur content. The pore structure characteristic parameters were used to explain the mechanical properties of WRMSFSC. Analysis of the mechanical properties of WRMSFSC by response surface methodology (RSM) showed that the optimum modified sulfur and waste rubber content was 30% and 2%.

Abstract:For solid waste-based cementitious materials, most scholars focus their research on the hydration reaction of cementitious materials, but there is still a lack of solid waste design that comprehensively considers mechanical properties and durability. Therefore, this article focuses on exploring the mix of design and the microscopic and macroscopic properties of multi solid waste cementitious materials (MSWCMs), namely steel slag (SS), slag powder (SP), desulfurization gypsum (DG), fly ash (FA), and ordinary Portland cement (OPC). According to the orthogonal experimental results, the compressive strength of MSWCMs is optimal when the OPC content is 50% and the SS, SP, DG, and FA contents are 10%, 20%, 5%, and 15%, respectively. The MSWCMs group with an OPC content of 50% and SS, SP, DG, and FA contents of 5%, 15%, 5%, and 25% was selected as the control group. The pure OPC group was used as the blank group, and the optimal MSWCMs ratio group had a 28-day compressive strength of 50.7 megapascals, which was 14% and 7.6% higher than the control group and blank group, respectively. The drying shrinkage rate and resistance to chloride ions were also significantly improved, with maximum increases of 22.9%, 22.6%, and 8.9%, 9.8%, respectively. According to XRD, TG-DTG, and NMR testing, the improvement in macroscopic performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect between various solid wastes. This synergistic effect produces more ettringite (AFt) and C-(A)-S-H gel. This study provides a good theoretical basis for improving the comprehensive performance of MSWCMs and is conducive to reducing the use of cement, with significant economic and environmental benefits.

Abstract:Silty soil has the characteristics of low natural moisture content and poor viscosity, and the strength and deformation required for foundation engineering can be satisfied by reinforcing and improving the silt. In order to study the reinforcement and improvement effects of polypropylene (PP) fiber and fly ash (FA) on cement–silty soil, an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, scanning electron microscope (SEM) test, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis test were carried out. Cement (mixed amounts are 4%, 8%, 12%, and 16% of dry soil mass) was used as the basic modifier, and PP fiber (mixed amounts are 0%, 0.15%, 0.3%, and 0.45% of dry soil mass) compounded with FA (adding amounts of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of dry soil mass) were used as an external admixture of cement–silty soil to study the mechanical properties, curing mechanism, and microstructure of the modified soil in different ages of 7 d, 14 d, 28 d, and 60 d. The test results show that with the increase in cement and curing age, the UCS of the modified soil increases, and with the increase in the PP fiber and FA, the UCS of the modified soil first increases and then decreases; there is an optimal content of FA and PP fiber, which are 10 and 0.15%, respectively. A large amount of C-S-H and AFt substances are produced inside the modified soil to cover the surface of soil particles or fill in the pores between soil particles, forming a tight spatial network structure and improving the mechanical properties of the cement–soil. The intensity of the diffraction peaks of the mineral components within the modified soils is more influenced by the cement and age, and the effect of FA is weaker. The stress–strain curve of the modified soil is divided into elastic stage, plastic deformation stage, and strain-softening stage, and the specimens in each stage have corresponding deformation characteristics. By analyzing the behavioral characteristics and curing improvement mechanism of modified soil from the duo perspective of macro-mechanical properties and microstructural composition, it can provide some basis for the engineering application of silty soil.

Abstract:In this paper, industrial waste residue was used as the main cementing material instead of Portland cement to solidify the silt, which was in contrast with the single cement solidified silt. Firstly, the mechanical properties and influence laws of single cement and different mix ratio cement-industrial waste solidified silt were carried out. Secondly, the optimal mix ratio of solidified silt was obtained as: Portland cement: blast furnace slag: phosphogypsum = 3:6:1. Compared with the solidified silt with single cement, the compressive strength of the solidified silt with composite curing agent reached 517.19 kPa after curing for 28 days, which was 80.09% higher than that of the solidified silt with single cement. Finally, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analyzer (TG) and nitrogen adsorption pore analyzer were used to study the composition, quantity, microstructure and pore characteristics of the minerals generated during the solidification process of the composite curing agent, so as to reveal the mechanism of the effective solidification of the silt by the composite curing agent. The test results showed that the secondary hydration reaction of blast furnace slag can be co-stimulated by the cement hydration products Calcium hydroxide and phosphogypsum, and the hydration products formed Hydrated calcium silicate colloid and Ettringite crystal. The hydration products with colloid properties were added to the solidified silt system, which will significantly improve the solidified silt performance of the composite curing agent. Hydrated calcium silicate colloid and Ettringite crystal played an important role in the skeleton and filling, and the structure of the silt solidified by the compound curing agent was more compact.

Abstract:In response to the National Development and Reform Commission's "Guiding Opinions on Comprehensive Utilization of Large Solid Wastes during the Fourteenth Five Year Plan", further expand the use of steel slag as concrete admixture in construction projects and other fields, and gradually improve the comprehensive utilization ratio, a cementitious composite with high utilization of steel slag (CHS) was developed, which is with the cement replaced by high-content super-fine steel slag powder (SSP) (replacement ratio υ ≥ 30%) as the cementitious materials, steel slag sand (SS) as the only aggregate and environmentally basalt fiber (BF) for toughening. It improves the utilization percentage of steel slag (SSP and SS) and reduces the consumption of natural resources such as cement and natural sand. Use BF to achieve better strength and toughness. In order to better understand the performance of CHS and make it better used in the engineering field. Study the influence of each component on the strength and energy consumption of compression and splitting tension, and strive to find the optimal proportion and lay the theoretical foundation for its application. Through the tests, the effects of high replacement ratio υ (30%–50%), low binder-aggregate ratio γ (0.31–0.44), and BF content ρ v (0%–2%) on the aspects of peak strength, force-deformation curve and energy consumption were analyzed. The results show that the standard curing f ck and f t,s can reach 40 MPa and 5 MPa respectively. With the increase of υ , the maximum axial compressive strength f ck and splitting tensile strength f t,s decreased insignificantly. The γ has an important influence on f ck and f t,s . When it increases from 0.31 to 0.44, f ck increases linearly by 63.1% to 40.4 MPa, while f t,s increases by 52.8% to 5.18 MPa. As ρ v increases, f ck and f t,s show a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. ρ v exerts a significant impact on the descending segments of stress-strain response curves of the compression which expressed as bilinear and trilinear models with different ρ v after normalization. The energy consumptions of peak, total, and residual ( E peak , E disp , E res ) show a slight downward trend with the increase of υ , a significantly upward trend with the increase of γ . With the increase of γ v , and E disp increase first and then tend to be flat, while E res always increases and the percentages of E res / E disp in the compressive test increase from 22.6% to 38.5%, reflecting the improvement of the compressive toughness of BF.

Mechanical Properties and Axial Compression Deformation Property of Steel Fiber Reinforced Self-Compacting Concrete Containing High Level Fly Ash

Abstract:The cement industry has brought serious environmental pollution problems. In the background of ecological civilization, accelerating rational use of waste resources plays an important role in protecting the environment. In this study, self-compacting concrete (SCC) is prepared using fly ash and lime powder as supplementary cementitious materials by replacing 50%, 60%, and 70% of ordinary Portland cement. By systematically analyzing the influence of the fly ash replacement rate on the workability and mechanical properties of SCC, steel-fiber-reinforced SCC containing 60% fly ash is chosen for further study, and steel fiber is added at the percentages of 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, and 1.00%. The performances in fresh and hardened states are investigated in terms of workability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and axial compression deformation property. The obtained outcomes indicate that although the incorporation of fly ash can improve the workability of the mixture, there is a negative correlation between the mechanical properties of SCC and the fly ash replacement rate. For steel-fiber-reinforced SCC containing 60% fly ash, when the content of steel fibers exceeds 0.75%, the workability decreases sharply, and even when the volume fraction is 1.00%, the passing ability cannot meet the requirements of the technical specifications for applications of self-compacting concrete. The analysis results for mechanical properties show that compressive strength is not changed significantly with increasing percentage of steel fibers. The steel fibers strengthen splitting tensile strength and flexural strength significantly, and compared with that of without steel fibers, they increased by 22% and 58%, respectively, with steel fibers up to 1.00%. Additionally, the parameters of the axial compression deformation property are improved by introducing steel fibers, especially the strain energy (Vε) and relative toughness (Γ) of steel-fiber-reinforced SCC containing a high level of fly ash.

Effect of steel slag powder, fly ash, and silica fume on the mechanical properties and durability of cement mortar

Abstract:This study is aimed at exploring the effect of steel slag powder (SSP), fly ash (FA), and silica fume (SF) on the mechanical properties and durability of cement mortar. SSP, SF, and FA were used as partial replacement of the Ordinary Portland cement (OPC). It was showed that the compressive and bending strength of steel slag powder were slightly lower than that of OPC. An increase in the SSP content caused a decrease in strength. However, the growth rate of compressive strength of SSP2 (20% replacement by the weight of OPC) at the curing ages of 90 days was about 8% higher than that of OPC, and the durability of SSP2 was better than that of OPC. The combination of mineral admixtures improved the later strength, water impermeability, and sulfate resistance compared with OPC and SSP2. The compressive strength of SSPFA (SSP and SF) at 90 days reached 70.3 MPa. The results of X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy indicated that SSP played a synergistic role with FA or SF to improve the performance of cement mortar.

Abstract:This work analyzes the effects of Industrial solid waste content and meso-microstructure on the mechanical and fracture behavior of cemented solid-waste composites (CSWC). The mechanical properties of CSWC were investigated using uniaxial compression tests. Quantitative analysis of pore and particle structure and cracks was performed using X-ray computed tomography (CT). In addition, the effects of solid waste content and porosity on the Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of CSWC were analyzed, and the effects of pore and steel slag (SS) particle distribution on crack expansion were investigated. The results show that the optimization of solid waste content can improve the pore structure of CSWC and promote the uniform distribution of SS particles within CSWC. SS content is 40 wt%, SS is the main factor affecting the strength of CSWC, SS content is less than 40 wt%, porosity and fly ash (FA) are the main factors affecting the strength of CSWC. Connected pores and microcracks are prone to develop as cracks under the action of external loads. Porosity is less than or equal to 0.10%, pore size is not related to crack development. SS content is greater than 10 wt%, particle structure affects crack development.

Abstract:To explore the strength development characteristics and engineering performance of different coal-based solid waste filling materials cemented into filling body, coal gangue was used as coarse material, fly ash, desulfurization gypsum, gasification slag, and furnace bottom slag as fine material, and cement as a gelling agent. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and bleeding rate of coal-based solid waste cemented backfill (CBSWCB) were tested by an orthogonal experiment, and the influencing factors of mechanical properties and strength development were analyzed. The multiple generalized linear model of strength and bleeding rate was established, and the optimal filling material ratio was determined. The engineering performance index of CBSWCB with the optimal ratio was tested. The results show the following points: (1) the concentration and content of desulfurization gypsum had a great influence on the early compressive strength of CBSWCB, while fly ash, gasification slag, and furnace bottom slag had little influence on the early compressive strength. (2) High concentration, high content of fly ash and furnace bottom slag, low content of desulfurization gypsum, and gasification slag can significantly improve the early strength. High concentration and high content of fly ash, low content of gasification slag, furnace bottom slag, and desulfurization gypsum are beneficial to the later strength increase. (3) Under the optimal ratio scheme, the bleeding rate of CBSWCB was 1.6%, the slump was 16.6 cm, the cohesion was general, the segregation resistance was good, the initial setting time was 5.42 h, the final setting time was 7 h, and the early strength after curing for 8 h reached 0.24 MPa.

Effect of Fiber Content on Mechanical Properties of Fiber-Reinforced CGF All-Solid-Waste Binder-Solidified Soil

Abstract:In order to realize the resource utilization of solid waste and improve the tensile strength and toughness of soil, CCR-GGBS-FA all-solid-waste binder (CGF) composed of general industrial solid waste calcium carbide residue (CCR), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and fly ash (FA) was used instead of cement and combined with polypropylene fiber to strengthen the silty soil taken from Dongying City, China. An unconfined compressive strength test (UCS test) and a uniaxial tensile test (UT test) were carried out on 10 groups of samples with five different fiber contents to uncover the effect of fiber content on tensile and compressive properties, and the reinforcement mechanism was studied using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test. The test results show that the unconfined compressive strength, the uniaxial tensile strength, the deformation modulus, the tensile modulus, the fracture energy and the residual strength of fiber-reinforced CGF-solidified soil are significantly improved compared with nonfiber-solidified soil. The compressive strength and the tensile strength of polypropylene-fiber-reinforced CGF-solidified soil reach the maximum value when the fiber content is 0.25%, as the unconfined compressive strength and the tensile strength are 3985.7 kPa and 905.9 kPa, respectively, which are 116.60% and 186.16% higher than those of nonfiber-solidified soil, respectively. The macro-micro tests identify that the hydration products generated by CGF improve the compactness through gelling and filling in solidified soil, and the fiber enhances the resistance to deformation by bridging and forming a three-dimensional network structure. The addition of fiber effectively improves the toughness and stiffness of solidified soil and makes the failure mode of CGF-solidified soil transition from typical brittle failure to plastic failure. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for the application of fiber-reinforced CGF-solidified soil in practical engineering.

Abstract:Industrial wastes, such as phosphogypsum, are characterized by high production and accumulation volumes, and significant pollution. A high-performance, all-solid waste, phosphogypsum-based composite cementitious material (PCCM) was developed by using a hybrid ball milling method and thermal activation to stimulate various industrial wastes. Optimization of rationing was analyzed using extreme variance, standard variance, and multiple regression models. The macro-engineering parameters of PCCM were evaluated through flexural and compressive tests. The mineralogical composition, functional groups, micro-morphology, and molecular structure of PCCM were examined through micro-testing. When the mass ratio of Ball milled calcined phosphogypsum (BCPG) to granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) is 1.2:1, with a 4 % addition of calcium oxide and a water-cement ratio of 0.4, the 28-day flexural and compressive strengths, as well as the softening coefficients, of PCCM can reach 7.27 MPa, 40.1 MPa, and 0.922, respectively, closely matching the performance of C42.5 cement. Under the synergistic effects of the hydration reaction and an alkaline environment, the CaSO 4 in the PCCM system hydrated and crystallized to produce gypsum-phase crystals, enhancing early strength properties by 60–174 %. As hydration continued, SO 4 2- reacted with silicon and aluminum oxides, prompting secondary hydration of GGBS, and increasing AFt and C-(A)-S-H in the system. This research offers a new approach for the co-disposal and resource utilization of various solid wastes while identifying a cementitious material that can replace traditional cement in practical engineering applications.

Preparation and Hydration Properties of Steel Slag-Based Composite Cementitious Materials with High Strength

Abstract:Steel slag (SS) has been largely discharged but little utilized, causing an environmental problem in China. In this paper, SS-based composite cementitious materials with high strength were prepared by the high volume of SS (≥40%), granulated blast-furnace slag (GBFS), fly ash (FA), flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGDG) and cement to promote the effective utilization of SS. The hydration and hardening properties were studied through setting time, compressive strength, length change, isothermal calorimetry (IC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) tests. The results show that SS-based composite cementitious material exhibited a lower hydration heat release, an appropriate setting time, and volume stability. The SS cementitious material with 40% SS could obtain high strength of over 65 MPa at 28 days and 80 MPa at 90 days. The strength value of > 60 MPa is present in the binder, with 50% SS at 56 days. GBFS promotes hydration reactions and the formation of AFt and C-(A)-S-H gel, thus enhancing compressive strength. FA has a beneficial effect on later strength. The small and fine pore structures contribute to the development of strength. The main hydration products of SS composite cementitious materials are C-(A)-S-H gel, and ettringite (AFt), with less Ca(OH)2. The C-(A)-S-H gel with a lower Ca/Si ratio and a higher Al/Ca ratio in cementitious material, promotes mechanical properties.

Abstract:Utilization of solid wastes in building materials can reduce the amount of cement and thus reduce carbon emissions. However, low compressive strength largely restrained the development of solid waste-based cementitious materials (SWBCM). In this study, steel slag (SS), phosphogypsum (PG), and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) were used to prepare SWBCM. Ultra-fine slag (UFS) was used to partially replace raw GGBS in SWBCM, with intent to enhance the compressive strength of SS-PG-GGBS binders. Results showed that the strength of SS-PG-GGBS mortars was 17.0 MPa and 24.0 MPa at 7 d and 28 d, while 20% UFS mortars were 33.2 MPa and 44.9 MPa. The reason was that the high activity of UFS and nucleation-inducing effect could accelerate early hydration of SS-PG-GGBS, and the higher hydration degree of GGBS and the refined pore structure enhanced the later strength. Additionally, the promotion mechanism of UFS on SS-PG-GGBS system was proposed. These results showed an effective method to promote the strength of SWBCM. This type of binders showed greatly potential in low carbon cementitious materials.

Abstract:Ultra‐high‐performance cementitious composite (UHPCC) incurs higher economic costs and resource wastage due to its high cement/silica fume (SF) content. The paper aims to achieve sustainability and environmental friendliness of UHPCC by substituting cement/SF with glass powder (GP). The influence of various GP particle sizes and substitution levels on the mechanical properties of UHPCC was investigated. X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were employed to analyze the impact of GP on the hydration process of UHPCC from a microscopic perspective. In addition, the internal damage pattern of GP‐UHPCC was simulated by the RFPA3D program. The results show that the addition of GP could achieve superior fluidity than GP‐0. Compared to conventional UHPCC, GP‐20 exhibits improved strength, initial flexural toughness, and residual flexural toughness. Furthermore, finer GP particle sizes contribute to enhanced matrix strength and flexural energy absorption capacity to some extent. Additionally, the incorporation of 5%–20% GP leads to an increase in the characteristic peaks of hydrated lime and C‐S‐H gel, which are beneficial to improving the internal microstructure of the matrix. Based on the RFPA3D program, the crack area, principal stress distribution, and acoustic emission energy of specimens with 15%–25% GP substitution levels were significantly higher than those of specimens with low substitution levels (0%–10%). Generally speaking, a GP substitution level of 15%–25% is found the most effective range for improving strength, and toughness behavior in this study.

Abstract:To reduce carbon emissions associated with substantial concrete usage in construction and achieve the objectives of green and low-carbon construction, this study innovatively develops a low-carbon binary material by adding limestone powder (LP) and silica fume (SF) into the conventional cement-based material, enhancing the comprehensive utility value of LP. The experimental results show that the addition of 15% LP and 5% SF increases the yield stress of the mortar yet substantially reduces the plastic viscosity to 2.84 Nmm·min, representing a 44.5% decrease compared to pure cement slurry. This reduction is conducive to long-distance pumping of the cement-based material. Moreover, the addition of 5% SF compensates for the 18.8% (mid-stage, 28-d) and 15.8% (late-stage, 90-d) strength loss in mortar caused by LP while simultaneously improving the strength of the co-mixed system by 10.4% (mid-stage) and 10.8% (late-stage). In the early-stage measurements of the LP-SF binary cement-based materials, it is observed that while SF slightly increases the hydration heat release, LP suppresses the early hydration heat release. Therefore, the total heat release observed in the 15% LP and 5% SF group after 72 h is only 254 J/g, demonstrating favorable temperature control and crack prevention effects. In addition, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric/differential thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) phase analysis reveal a notable increase of 53.56% in CH consumption. Besides, the weight loss on ignition of C-S-H crystals increases, indicating that the secondary hydration of LP and the pozzolanic reaction of SF promote the production of C-S-H in the system. Combined with the late-stage strength and water absorption characteristics, it is concluded that the system exhibits good mechanical properties and compactness. This study presents a use of mixed proportion that enables excellent mechanical properties, good pumping performance, and low hydration heat. Moreover, the analysis indicates that the carbon emission of each cubic meter of the as-developed mortar is reduced by approximately 16.7–23.9%, promoting the efficient and clean utilization of LP and SF.
