Abstract:Biosorption is a versatile technique of removing the oil spill - one of the major toxicants that causes water pollution, which threatens the ecological balance of the aquatic ecosystem. The proposed research aims in developing a viable adsorbent from discarded agricultural waste, Phoenix sylvestris, which was surface altered, assessed and utilised as a biosorbent for the effective removal of diesel from aqueous solution in batch adsorption trials. Waste palm leaves, Phoenix sylvestris (RPS)was physically (PMPS) and chemically modified (CMPS) to adsorb diesel in the emulsion. The synthesised materials were characterised by FTIR, SEM, and EDS, confirming a well-defined microporous structure consisting of ionisable groups. The studies indicated optimised conditions of 10 g, 4.5 g and 2 g of RPS, PMPS and CMPS respectively at 303K for an optimised adsorption time of 60 min. Freundlich isotherm agreed well with experimental data, and the kinetic mechanism claimed better results with RPS, PMPS and CMPS for Pseudo first-order model. The adsorbents could be reused five times without much loss of efficiency. From the performed studies, it can be inferred that good adsorption capacities at optimised conditions followed the order of CMPS > PMPS > RPS. Thermodynamic analysis proved the feasibility of such biosorption with exothermic nature predicting spontaneous attraction of oil components to the surface of PMPS and CMPS. Moreover, the density of the CMPS layer rendered proven results for such biosorption displaying a hyperbolic dependency assuring its efficacy. Hence, it can be concluded that the prepared adsorbent from Phoenix sylvestris, an agricultural waste, possess good adsorptive properties.
Rational Design of K173A Substitution Enhances Thermostability Coupled with Catalytic Activity of Enterobacter sp. Bn12 Lipase

Abstract:ELBn12 is a lipase isolated from Enterobacter sp. Bn12 with potential application in biotechnology. Homology modeling and rational design were applied to improve thermal stability of the lipase. K173A substitution introduced an AXXXA motif on the lipase model and it may have role in dimerization and thermostability of the protein. Site-directed mutagenesis was performed to construct the lipase variant. The mutated lipase was expressed in Escherichia coli pLysS and partially purified. Thermostability of the mutated lipase after 1 h of incubation at 70°C was twice that of wild-type lipase under the same conditions. Catalytic activity of the variant was about 1.5-fold towards tricaprylin at 60°C and pH 8.0; moreover, the lipase variant preserved its stability within the pH range of 7.0-11.0. Substitution of superficial hydrophilic Lys with hydrophobic Ala residue increased stability of the mutated lipase in the presence of nonionic surfactants, but this substitution caused lower stability towards polar solvents. Analysis of circular dichroism spectroscopy showed that the K173A mutation altered the secondary structure of the lipase into a more helical one. In conclusion, results of this study demonstrate the positive role of generation of a stabilizing protein motif through rational protein engineering that improves the enzyme characteristics.

Abstract:Oily wastewater is one of the most hazardous contaminants that can hurt the ecosystem. There is an urgent need to adopt an efficient, eco-friendly, and low-cost material to replace the old traditional treatment methods of oily wastewater that were very expensive in addition to their relatively low efficiency. Eucalyptus bark is considered one of the materials that are rarely used in this field, although it has the characteristics that qualify it to be a distinguished and promising one. The optimum conditions of using Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (Blue gum) bark in the removal of oil from prepared aqueous solutions were concluded before applying in the treatment of real oily industrial wastewater from New Borg El-Arab City, Egypt. The sequential optimization adsorption results were as follows: initial oil concentration, 500 mg/l; adsorbent dosage, 0.5 g/l; pH, 3; exposure time, 45 min; temperature, 20 °C; and shaking rate, 300 rpm. The pretreatment of biomass with H 3 PO 4 proved it to be superior in the oil removal process where the efficacy reached 450.69 mg/g, while the unmodified form came second where the adsorption efficacy reached 395.86 mg/g, after that the NaOH-modified form came third by efficacy reached 315.85 mg/g. The results of SEM elucidated this order of efficacy according to the porosity of the bark surface. FTIR analysis indicated that OH, carboxylic C = O, and carboxylic C-O groups are the contributing groups in the oil adsorption process for the three forms of Eucalyptus bark. The reusability of Eucalyptus bark using n-hexane for one cycle reached 96.34, 97.13, and 95.83% for unmodified, H-modified, and OH-modified forms, respectively, and for five cycles reached 56.29, 58.01, and 55.81% for unmodified, H-modified, and OH-modified forms, respectively. The application of Eucalyptus bark in the H-form in the treatment of real oily wastewater was achieved by efficacy ranging between 91.46 and 96.23% which proves the excellence of Eucalyptus bark in the treatment of oily wastewater.

Abstract:The adsorption of crude oil from water by using Potassium hydroxide (KOH) prepared from coconut coir activated carbon CCACKOH was investigated by batch adsorption under varying parameters such as adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial oil concentration, temperature and agitation speed. The morphological modification significantly increased the hydrophobicity of the adsorbent, thus creating a CCAC with a much better adsorption capacity for crude oil removal having a maximum adsorption capacity of 4859.5 mg/g at 304 K as evidently proven by FTIR and SEM analysis. The experimental results showed that the percentage of crude oil removal increased with an increase in adsorbent dosage, contact time and decrease in initial oil concentration. The experimental isotherm data were analysed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Toth, Sip and Redlich-Peterson isotherm equations and the best fitted isotherm model was Freundlich model with a high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.999). The kinetic data were properly fitted into various kinetic models with Pseudo-second order model showing best fit having a correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.999) and Boyd model revealed that the adsorption was controlled by internal transport mechanism and film-diffusion was the major mode of adsorption. The crude oil adsorption was chemisorption and endothermic in nature (ΔH° = 134 KJ/mol.K) and the positive value of entropy (ΔS° = 0.517 KJ/mol.K) showed an increase in disorder and randomness at the adsorbent-adsorbate interface during the adsorption of crude oil from water. The decrease in Gibbs energy (ΔG°) with increasing temperature indicated an increase in the feasibility and spontaneity of the adsorption at higher temperatures. The prepared adsorbent showed significant capability to be used as a low-cost, re-generable and eco-friendly adsorbent in oil spill clean-up.

Abstract:Palm oil mill effluent (POME), which contains about 4000mg/l of residual oil, has been chosen to remove its residual oil using three types of adsorbents. Jar-test method has been used to identify the best adsorbent to remove the residual oil from POME. Chitosan was compared to activated carbon and bentonite as a potential residual oil remover. Chitosan showed the best removal compared to the other adsorbents for all the parameters studied. Chitosan could successfully remove 99% of residual oil and minimize the suspended solid content to a value of 25mg/l from POME at a dosage of 0.5g and employing a mixing time of 30min, a mixing rate of 100rpm, sedimentation for 30min and a pH value of ranging from 4.0 to 5.0. For activated carbon and bentonite, the optimum dosages were 8.0g and 10.0g/l, respectively, 30min of mixing time at 150rpm, 80 and 60min of settling time, respectively, and pH of 4.0–5.0 to obtain the same percentage of removal as performed by chitosan. Activated carbon and bentonite can only reduce the suspended solid values up to 35 and 70mg/l, respectively, at the optimized conditions.

Abstract:Banana pseudo stem fiber adsorbent (BPSF) with well-ordered framework of porosity was fabricated via esterification reaction between organic acid and the biomass. The resulting adsorbent (BPSF) was applied for the removal of crude oil from water surface. Optimization and modeling of the process parameters was done using response surface methodology (RSM), artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system-genetic algorithm (ANFIS-GA). Result shows that the optimum removal of oil occurred at oil water ratio of 0.4 g /100cm3 with 94.8% oil removal. Meanwhile, BPSF exhibited high adsorptive potential at a very low pH of 4 with 95.12% oil removal. Thermodynamic studies revealed activation energy, change in enthalpy and change in entropy of the process as (19.55, 24.68, -0.438 KJ/mols) and (53.82,31.66, -0.186 KJ/mols) indicating non-spontaneous process. Equilibrium modeling revealed that the composite material was highly matched to Langmuir isotherm model with regression coefficient > 98% with maximum adsorption capacity of 53.26 mg/g. Optimization of the process shows the optimum conditions as 100 °C, 0.4 g/100cm3, 2.1 g, 6 and 75 mins for temperature, oil concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH and time. RSM, ANFIS, and ANN models adequately predicted the oil removal with correlation coefficient > 0.97 but statistically, ANN was the best model followed by ANFIS and RSM models. Results obtained from this investigation has shown that esterified banana pseudo stem fiber composite is an efficient, economic viable and sustainable adsorbent since the properties obtained is competing favorably with commercial adsorbents.
Modelling and optimization of crude oil removal from surface water via organic acid functionalized biomass using machine learning approach

Abstract:Banana peel fiber adsorbent (BPF) with well-arranged substructure of pores was fabricated via esterification reaction betwixt organic acid and biomass. The emerged adsorbent (BPF) was employed in taking away crude oil from water surface. Three machine learning tools such as RSM, ANN and ANFIS was employed for the modelling and optimization of the process. From results, the optimal oil layer removal of 98.2% was achieved at oil water ratio of 0.2g /100cm 3 . For now, BPF displayed high adsorptive prospect at a very low pH of 4 with 96.8 % oil removal. On the other hand, the activation energy, enthalpy change and entropy change of the system are (18.56, 25.44, -0.751 KJ/mols) and (25.77, 29.16, -0.813 KJ/mols) designating a non-spontaneous system. The process of removal by BPF really matched the Langmuir isotherm model as proved by statistical error analysis with highest adsorption capacity of 49.33mg/g as shown through equilibrium modeling. RSM displayed the optimum conditions of the key variables such as temperature, oil concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH and time as 100°C, 0.2g/100cm 3 , 2.1g, 6 and 75 mins, respectively. Analysis of the three generic algorithm indicated significant oil removal prediction with quite remarkably similar coefficient of correlation of 0.999. Additional statistical analysis suggested that RSM was marginally better than ANN and ANFIS for the modelling of crude oil removal via esterified banana peels fiber.

Abstract:In this work, we designed and fabricated membrane and spongy materials for separating and absorbing different oils and organic solvents from effluent water. Initially, the activated biosorbent (ABs) material was prepared and used to coat the surface of filter paper and melamine sponge called (ABs@Membrane) and (ABs@Sponge). Developed ABs@Membrane and ABs@Sponge showed excellent hydrophobi city with excellent water contact angle. Moreover, the synthesized ABs@Sponge showed excellent oil/organic solvent absorption capacity in the presence of water, i. e., 40 gm of machine oil and 62 gm of chloroform. Whereas, the synthesized ABs@Membrane material showed excellent oil‐water separation efficiency (>90 %), water flux (219.29 Lm−2 h−1) with a good oil rejection ratio (>91 %). Different carbon‐based sorbents are widely used for the refinement of industrial as well as domestic effluent because of their availability, low cost, and excellent hydrophobicity. In this article, the activated biosorbent (ABs) material was prepared and applied to develop a membrane (ABs@Membrane) and sponge (ABs@Sponge) for effective oil and organic solvent cleanup from water mixtures. The one‐pot process was adopted to prepare ABs material by the simple carbonization of naturally available cotton and biowaste chitosan with sulphuric acid. The fabricated ABs@Membrane and ABs@Sponge showed excellent hydrophobicity with excellent water contact angle, i. e., 138.06° and 135.58°, respectively. Moreover, the synthesized ABs@Sponge showed excellent oil/organic solvent absorption capacity in the presence of water, i. e., 40 gm of machine oil and 62 gm of chloroform. Whereas the synthesized ABs@Membrane material showed excellent oil‐water separation efficiency (>90 %) and water flux (219.29 Lm−2 h−1) with a good oil rejection ratio (>91 %). The synthesized ABs@Membrane and ABs@Sponge material showed excellent recyclability performance up to 5th no of consecutive cycles. The straightforward synthesis and fabrication of ABs@Membrane and ABs@Sponge materials with excellent oil rejection ratio and oil/organic solvent separation performance open a new window in the effluent water treatment application.

Abstract:One of the most significant environmental problems the world population faces is the inadequate disposal of petroleum derivatives. Lubricant oil is a hazardous waste due to its properties and characteristics. This study is a new proposal for using rice waste as an adsorbent to remove lubricating oils from a water medium. Rice husk from local industries was prepared using four different techniques: thermal treatment, alkaline treatment, acid treated and without treatment. The experiment used a mineral-based lubricating oil for gasoline and ethanol engines as adsorbate. Absorbents were characterized using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), morphological structure (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Specific surface area and pore size distribution (BET/BJH). The adsorbent without treatment showed the smallest surface area (0.79 m 2 g −1 ), while the adsorbent produced using acid treatment showed the largest (3.71 m 2 g −1 ). The adsorption kinetic behavior was obtained by adjusting the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich models. Elovich models showed more adequate results to represent the kinetic profile. The adsorbents showed high adsorption capacities, ranging from 1650 to 2000 mg g −1 . The adsorbent produced using heat treatment (RH-H) was the most efficient for removing lubricating oil.

Abstract:The adsorption of ammonium from water was studied on an activated carbon obtained using raw oil palm shell and activated with acetic acid. The performance of this adsorbent was tested at different operating conditions including the solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and initial ammonium concentration. Kinetic and equilibrium studies were carried out, and their results were analyzed with different models. For the adsorption kinetics, the pseudo-first order equation was the best model to correlate this system. Calculated adsorption rate constants ranged from 0.071 to 0.074 g/mg min. The ammonium removal was 70–80% at pH 6–8, and it was significantly affected by electrostatic interaction forces. Ammonium removal (%) increased with the adsorbent dosage, and neutral pH condition favored the adsorption of this pollutant. The best ammonium adsorption conditions were identified with a response surface methodology model where the maximum removal was 91.49% with 2.27 g/L of adsorbent at pH 8.11 for an initial ammonium concentration of 36.90 mg/L. The application of a physical monolayer model developed by statistical physics theory indicated that the removal mechanism of ammonium was multi-ionic and involved physical interactions with adsorption energy of 29 kJ/mol. This activated carbon treated with acetic acid is promising to depollute aqueous solutions containing ammonium.

Abstract:Considering the significant harm caused to aquatic ecosystems and marine life by oil spills and the discharge of oily wastewater, there is a pressing need to address this issue to protect our environment and prevent the wastage of valuable resources. We introduced a one-step approach to create an anti-swelling, water-repellent sorbent using a green polysaccharide called gum gellan, functionalized with Octadecyl trichlorosilane (OTS) through dip coating method. Natural gums like gellan have high absorption capability due to their large surface area. However, they are hydrophilic, which means they can only absorb water. This property makes them unsuitable for oil spill applications. To make gum gellan suitable for oil spill applications, we have modified it in this study. We have introduced a material called octadecyltrichlorosilane, which has low surface energy and hierarchical roughness. This modification changes the wettability of gellan from hydrophilic to hydrophobic/oleophilic, allowing it to absorb oil and repel water. The sorbent is analyzed using several techniques, such as FTIR, XRD, TGA, FE-SEM, BET, Raman, EDX, and H1-NMR. The hydrophobic sorbent obtained demonstrates low density, high surface area, and high porosity. These characteristics give it excellent floatability and immediate and exceptional selectivity for absorbing oil from water. Additionally, it does not absorb any detectable amount of water. The sorbent exhibited a water contact angle (WCA) of 140 3 and an oil contact angle (OCA) of 0˚ for various oils and organic solvents. It has rapid oil absorption capacity of 3.0 g/g for petrol, and can be easily recovered after use. The BET analysis revealed that after the modification with OTS, the sorbent's total surface area increased from 0.579 m2/g to 4.713 m2/g. This indicates that the OTS modification greatly enhances the surface area and pore volume of the, thus improving its ability to absorb oil. This sorbent efficiently separates oil-in-water emulsions, both surfactant-stabilized and surfactant-free, achieving over 90% separation through gravity alone. Moreover, the sorbent can sustain its wettability even under harsh environmental conditions, including exposure to acids, alkalis, and salts. The absorption data predominantly aligned with the pseudo-2nd-order model. Thus, this sorbent provides a cost-effective alternative for efficiently absorbing and separating oil-water emulsions in households and industries.
Modified Orange Peel Waste as a Sustainable Material for Adsorption of Contaminants

Abstract:World orange production is estimated at 60 million tons per annum, while the annual production of orange peel waste is 32 million tons. According to available data, the adsorption capacity of orange peel ranges from 3 mg/g to 5 mg/g, while their water uptake is lower than 1 mg/g. The low water uptake of orange peel and the abundance of biomass in nature has made orange peel an excellent biosorption material. This review summarised different studies on orange peel adsorption of various contaminants to identify properties of orange peel that influence the adsorption of contaminants. Most of the literature reviewed studied orange peel adsorption of heavy metals, followed by studies on the adsorption of dyes, while few studies have investigated adsorption of oil by orange peel. FTIR spectra analysis and SEM micrographs of raw and activated orange peels were studied to understand the structural properties of the biomass responsible for adsorption. The study identified pectin, hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl, and amine groups as components and important functional groups responsible for adsorption in orange peel. Furthermore, changes were observed in the structural properties of the peel after undergoing various modifications. Physical modification increased the surface area for binding and the adsorption of contaminants, while chemical treatments increased the carboxylic groups enhancing adsorption and the binding of contaminants. In addition, heating orange peel during the thermal modification process resulted in a highly porous structure and a subsequent increase in adsorption capacities. In conclusion, physical, chemical, and thermal treatments improve the structural properties of orange peel, resulting in high biosorption uptake. However, orange peels treated with chemicals recorded the highest contaminants adsorption capacities.

Abstract:Removal of oil spillage from the environment is a global concern. Various methods, including the use of fibers as sorbents, have been developed for oil spill control. Oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fiber is a plant biomass that may be acetylated by acetic anhydride using N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) as a catalyst; here, the extent of acetylation may be calculated in terms of weight percent gain (WPG). The modified fiber was used to remove Tapis and Arabian crude oils. The optimum time, temperature, and catalyst concentration were 4 h, 120 °C, and 3 %, respectively, and these parameters could achieve an 11.49 % increase in WPG. The optimized parameters improved the adsorption capacity of OPEFB fibers for crude oil removal. The acetylated OPEFB fibers were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy to observe the functional groups available and morphology. Kinetic and isotherm studies were conducted using different contact times and oil/water ratios. The rate of oil sorption onto the OPEFB fibers can be adequately described by the pseudo-second-order equation. Adsorption studies revealed that adsorption of crude oil on treated OPEFB fiber could be best described by the Langmuir isotherm model.

Abstract:Expanding industries and booming population have led to the increase in the installation of wastewater and sewer systems, even in close proximity to residential areas. Emissions from these installations particularly volatile organo-sulphur compounds (VOSCs) such as methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), ethyl mercaptan (C2H5SH), dimethyl sulphide (CH3SCH3) and carbon disulphide (CS2) are a nuisance to people even when present in small concentration. Strategies for removal involve addition of chemicals or other chemical processes which are generally expensive. Biofilters, on the other hand, consume large amount of energy and wash waters. Hence keeping commercialization in mind, it is important to develop a strategy which would be cost-effective and at the same time be effective to remove most of the odorous compounds present in these systems. In the present research work, granular activated carbons (GAC) are functionalized with alkali solution to improve the adsorption capacity. Liquid phase batch adsorption is performed with GAC and various functionalized activated carbons (FACs) with the help of raw sewage water from a local sewage water treatment plant. Concentration of odour was evaluated by two methods-olfactometry-based analysis for sensory measurement and GCMS-based analysis for analytical estimation of a specific odorous compound. The adsorption capacities of the functionalized GACs are higher primarily because of complex formation at the surface of modified GACs. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model agreed well with experimental results with the rate constant being 0.0191 mg/l min and 0.0153 mg/l min for methyl and ethyl mercaptan adsorption onto FAC-NH3. Boyd's film diffusion along with rate kinetic model supported that chemical adsorption forms the rate-limiting step. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the removal of VOSCs with respect to different process parameters like adsorbent amount and time. The olfactometry removal of overall odour was also optimized taking 6 factors in the Box Behnken design. Variance of analysis results indicated that all the models displayed considerable goodness of fit with R2 values close to 1. Methyl mercaptan turned out to be the highest contributor to the overall odour as confirmed both from experimental and optimization study. The optimized olfactometry odour removal (77.4%) along with CH3SH removal (80.34%), C2H5SH removal (59.16%), CH3SCH3 removal (63.21%) and CS2 removal (71.95%) was found at optimum process conditions, with amount of adsorbent of 10.29 g, adsorption time of 2.92 h. This result indicates that methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) is the highest odour contributing component out of the studied VOSCs. The results show promising potential for the use of activated carbon as an adsorbent for removal of odorous compounds from STPs.

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate a new all bio-based adsorbent material by treating Enteromorpho prolifera (EP) fibers with tannic acid-ferric chloride complex and then grafting hydrophobic group octadecylamine. All raw materials are easily available, low-cost, and safe. The modified EP fibers have approximately 63.4 g g−1 of oil absorption and 1.4 g g−1 of water absorption, which is an 62.8% increase in oil absorption and an 82% increase in hydrophobicity over that of untreated EP fibers, respectively, exhibiting high hydrophobicity and oleophilicity. The affinity discrimination to water and oil enables hydrophobic algae candidate materials to separate oils and water efficiently, both in an oil–water mixture and a water-in-oil emulsion. In summary, the as-synthesized modified EP demonstrates a broad application prospect in the treatment of oil spill accidents and oily wastewater.

Abstract:The dependence of Nigerian Government on foreign technology for oil spill cleanup in its water bodies does not add local content value in the development of the Nation’s economy. Acetylation of natural cellulose gives a material with high sorption capacity for oil in water. This research investigates crude oil sorption from water using acetylated and unacetylated lignocellulose. Oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) and cocoa pod (CP) were acetylated under mild conditions. The acetylated (modified) and unacetylated (unmodified) sorbents were used to sorb oil from water, and their sorption capacities and mechanisms were compared. Paired t test showed there was significant difference in the sorption capacities of modified and unmodified sorbents. Sorption of oil from water was found to be time and concentration dependent. Equilibrium studies showed that CP has higher sorption capacity than OPEFB and acetylation enhanced the crude sorption capacities of the sorbents. Crude oil sorption from water is a monolayer process that might have progressed from multilayer processes. Kinetic studies showed that sorption of crude oil by the sorbents was diffusion-controlled with the aid of physisorption and chemisorption mechanisms. Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscope analyses showed clear evidence of successful acetylation and oil sorption.

Abstract:Oil-contaminated or oily wastewater (OW) is generated from various industrial and domestic premises. It consists of fats, oils, and greases and may contain petroleum fractions such as diesel oil, gasoline, and kerosene. It is regarded as one of the most hazardous wastewaters, causing serious environmental and health threats to ecosystems and human beings. The global increase in the discharge of OW coupled with stringent regulations for effluent discharge and incessant drive for the reuse of treated wastewater necessitate the need for the treatment of the OW. Conventional approaches employed in the past are inept for OW treatment due to low separation efficiency, high operational cost, creating secondary pollution, and long treatment hours. Comparatively, the adsorption process is considered a better alternative because of its simple design and can involve low investment in terms of both initial cost and land required. Thus, the adsorption process is widely applied as a promising alternative to existing treatment methods for OW. The adsorption process is an effective technique for OW treatment. Super adsorbents with ultrahigh adsorption capabilities are highly desired for efficient OW treatment in a new revolution of adsorption technology to meet present and future needs. This review provides insights into advanced and emerging state-of-the-art technologies of the adsorption process as a safe and efficient treatment of OW. Strength, weakness, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis was conducted to identify and analyze internal strengths and weaknesses and external opportunities and threats that shape the current and future operation of the adsorption process for the treatment of oily wastewater for developing strategic goals. Super adsorbents with ultrahigh adsorption capability such as P-GSC and P-PKS discussed are highly desired. The extraordinary properties of P-GSC and P-PKS can provide leap-forward opportunities to revolutionize traditional adsorption technology. However, scale-bridging and optimization study of these innovated super adsorbents is required for the real application. It shows a bright future of P-GSC and P-PKS towards OW treatment.
Thermodynamic and structural investigation of oily wastewater treatment using peach kernel and walnut shell based activated carbon

Abstract:Despite the many articles about activated carbon with different precursors in adsorption process, no in-depth research has been carried out to understand the causes of the difference in surface adsorption characteristics of activated carbon with different precursors and different activation processes. In this work, the ability of two active carbon adsorbents made of walnut shell and peach kernel by two chemical and physical methods (totally 4 different types of activated carbon) in treatment of oily wastewater including diesel, gasoline, used oil or engine lubricant has been compared. The results show that the chemical activated peach carbon active with 97% hardness has provided the highest hardness and physical activated walnut carbon active has obtained the lowest hardness value (87%). It is also found that peach activated carbon has a higher iodine number than walnut activated carbon, and this amount can be increased using chemical methods; Therefore, the highest amount of Iodine Number is related to Peach activated carbon that is made by chemical method (1230 mg/g), and the lowest amount of iodine number is seen in walnut activated carbon that is made by physical method (1020 mg/g). moreover, the pore diameter of physical activated carbon is lower than chemical activated carbon in all cases. So that the pore diameter of chemical activated peach carbon active is equal to 22.08 μm and the measured pore diameter of physical activated peach carbon active is equal to 20.42 μm. These values for walnut are obtained as 22.74 μm and 21.86 μm, respectively. Furthermore, the temperature and pH effects on the adsorption of different synthesized oily wastewater was studied and it was found that a decrease in adsorption can be seen with an increase in temperature or decreasing the pH value, which can be referred to this fact that the process of adsorption is an exothermic process. Finally, to analyze the compatibility of adsorption isotherms with experimental data and to predict the adsorption process, three different isotherms named Langmuir, Temkin, and Freundlich isotherms were applied and their parameters were correlated. The correlation results show that the Langmuir isotherm had the best correlation in all cases compared to the Freundlich and Temkin isotherms, based on the correlation coefficient, and the calculated R 2 values which was greater than 0.99 in all the studied cases.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. Natural fiber has the advantages of being abundant, renewable and biodegradable, and it will be very promising to use it in the field of oil absorption. The adsorption and absorption process of engine oil, waste oil and salad oil were observed and quantitatively characterized by using four natural fibers of cotton, kapok, cattail and flax fiber. The main reason for the different forms of adsorbed oil droplets is that the static contact angles of the four fibers have little difference in the three oils, which further proves that flax is both lipophilic and hydrophilic. Judging from the shape of the oil droplets absorbed by the four types of fiber flakes, because the fibers changed from the local wetting state to the diffusion and expansion stage, and finally reached a stable state of saturation, the immersion time of the first half of the circle was much lower than that of the second half. The analysis of the influencing factors, such as the wax content on the fiber surface and the viscosity and tension of the oil, provides a theoretical reference for the application of natural fibers in the field of oil and sewage treatment.
