Abstract:Oxidative cracking of polyolefins into functionalized molecules or oligomers promises the chemical upcycling of plastic wastes. In this work, we develop a novel approach to polyolefin waste upcycling that utilizes low-temperature oxidative cracking combined with dynamic cross-linking to produce recyclable elastomers. High-density polyethylene is oxidized into functionalized oligomers with end carboxyl groups at 110 degrees C, achieving tunable number-average molecular weights (M n) ranging from 1500 to 5500 Da at distributions (D) between 2.91 and 3.33. These oligomers with high crystallinity directly react with amorphous cis-polybutadiene containing pendant epoxy groups (an oxidized product of cis-polybutadiene) through esterification, forming a dynamically cross-linked elastomer. The elastomer displays a low glass transition temperature (T g) of approximately -100 degrees C while maintaining a melting point (T m) above 80 degrees C; it showcases a Young ' s modulus (E) of 12.0 +/- 0.4 MPa, elongation at break (epsilon) of 600 +/- 28%, tensile strength (sigma) of 16.4 +/- 0.8 MPa, tensile toughness (U T) of 46.0 +/- 3.5 MJ center dot m-3, and a good elasticity with 81.8% elastic recovery in a 10-cycle tensile test, even higher than that of commercial POEs such as POE-8150 of Dow Company. The dynamic ester-bond-based cross-linking enables the elastomer to be reprocessed. Our study introduces an efficient chemical upcycling process for polyolefin wastes, eliminating the need for tedious separation steps of cracking products.

Abstract:Super engineering plastics such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherethersulfone (PEES) exhibit thermal stability, chemical resistance, and mechanical strength. Such characteristics are attributed to their robust chemical structures composed of stable aryl ethers. These features make chemical recycling difficult. This is because it is necessary to overcome through the stability of the material and then precisely cleave the stable bonds. This study demonstrates the depolymerization of PEES and PEEK by hydroquinone in the presence of sodium hydroxide in 1,3‐dimethyl‐2‐imidazolidinone (DMI) solvent at 150 oC. This method effectively provides monomeric products, diphenylsulfone and benzophenone having two 4‐hydroxyphenoxy groups at both para positions. DMI solvent was the crucial factor for this transformation, since it enhanced the reactivity of hydroquinone to cleave the aryl ether bonds.

Abstract:As the effective use of carbon resources has become a pressing societal issue, the importance of chemical recycling of plastics has increased. The catalytic chemical decomposition for plastics is a promising approach for creating valuable products under efficient and mild conditions. Although several commodity and engineering plastics have been applied, the decompositions of stable resins composed of strong main chains such as polyamides, thermoset resins, and super engineering plastics are underdeveloped. Especially, super engineering plastics that have high heat resistance, chemical resistance, and low solubility are nearly unexplored. In addition, many super engineering plastics are composed of robust aromatic ethers, which are difficult to cleave. Herein, we report the catalytic depolymerization-like chemical decomposition of oxyphenylene-based super engineering plastics such as polyetheretherketone and polysulfone using thiols via selective carbon–oxygen main chain cleavage to form electron-deficient arenes with sulfur functional groups and bisphenols. The catalyst combination of a bulky phosphazene base P 4 - t Bu with inorganic bases such as tripotassium phosphate enabled smooth decomposition. This method could be utilized with carbon- or glass fiber-enforced polyetheretherketone materials and a consumer resin. The sulfur functional groups in one product could be transformed to amino and sulfonium groups and fluorine by using suitable catalysts.

Recovery and Reutilization of Epoxy Thermoset via Acidic Ion Exchange Resin-Induced Controllable Oxidative Degradation and Subsequent Microspheroidization

Abstract:The high mechanical strength and thermal resistance of an epoxy (EP) thermoset make it ideal for wide applications in industries such as energy, aerospace, electronics, and construction but increase the difficulty in controllable and efficient recovery. Herein, acidic ion exchange resin-induced oxidative degradation of the EP thermoset was developed to obtain homogeneous oligomers at 85 °C in 4 h. The C–N bond is activated by free H+ of the ion exchange resin while the oxidation depth was dependent of acid groups of the ion exchange resin. There was no significant difference in the molecular weight or polydispersity index after complete degradation even when varying the degradation temperature and time. Even more, homogeneous degraded EP microspheres can be easily obtained by a water-induced phase separation method and it was a good candidate for wastewater treatment in the field of dye removal with a CV adsorption capacity of 270 mg/g and oil–water separation with a water flux of 57,325 L m–2 h–1 and a separation efficiency of 99.9%. This work overcomes the shortcomings of non-controllable degradation and the resultant complex products in traditional oxidative degradation systems of the EP thermoset. In addition, it provides a new insight into controllable recovery and value-added reutilization by taking advantages of both the waste EP and waste acidic ion exchange resins.

Abstract:Thermosetting polymers and composites are a class of high-performance materials with significant industrial applications. However, recycling of thermosets and their filling matters are significantly challenging. Here, we propose a method to recycle epoxy thermosetting polymer and composites efficiently by a synergistic effect of a solvent mixture using a highly efficient organic catalyst at an ordinary pressure and mild temperatures. The anhydride-epoxy network depolymerization enabled by selective ester bond cleavage process is substantially enhanced by a good solvent assisted and alcohol participated transesterification reaction. The epoxy thermoset can be dissolved in 28 min with 50% mass loss, and 70 min with 95% mass loss at 170 °C under ambient pressure. We demonstrate that this method can be used to reclaim carbon fibers from industrial reinforced epoxy composite products and embedded metal parts from commercial electronic products with undiminished properties at a mild temperature (∼170 °C) under an ordinary pressure in a short time (1.5 h). Moreover, the decomposed epoxy oligomer can be reused as a reactive ingredient for the preparation of new epoxy materials with high strength and modulus. This work provides a new insight into the thermosets dissolution and recycling.

Abstract:To establish a sustainable society, the development of polymer materials capable of reverting into monomers on demand is crucial. Traditional methods rely on breaking labile bonds such as esters in the main chain, which limits applicability to polymers that consist of robust covalent bonds. We found that the integration of directing groups allowed the engineering of resilient polymers with built-in recyclability. Our study showcases phenylene ether-based polymers fortified with directing groups, which can be selectively disassembled under nickel catalysts via selective cleavage of carbon–oxygen bonds. Notably, these polymers exhibit exceptional chemical stability towards acids, bases, and oxidizing agents, while being degradable to well-defined, repolymerizable molecules in the presence of a catalyst. Our findings allow for the development of next-generation polymer materials that are chemically recyclable by design.

Abstract:Recycling polymers by site-specific scission into short-chain oligomers/polymers, followed by recoupling these to form the original polymer presents an energetically more favorable shorter-loop chemical recycling in comparison to recycling into monomers. Here, we present the synthesis and polymerization of tri-aromatic diesters to prepare polyesters with acylhydrazone units as weak structural links. Two diester monomers were prepared by combining methyl 5-chloromethyl-2-furoate, obtainable from 5-chloromethylfurfural, with potentially biobased hydroquinone and resorcinol, respectively. The two diesters have a central phenyl ring flanked by two furan rings, and were polymerized with 1,6-hexanediol and 1,4-butanediol, respectively, together with controlled amounts of monofunctional ethyl levulinate to form telechelic ketone-terminated polyesters. Subsequent reactions of these telechelic polyesters with adipic dihydrazide yielded the corresponding chain-extended polyesters with increased molecular weights ([η] = 0.29–0.52 dL g–1) with acylhydrazone units in the backbone. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a high thermal stability of the polyesters with thermal decomposition only above 275 °C. The polyesters containing the linear hydroquinone units were found to be semi-crystalline materials with melting points at 158 and 192 °C, respectively, while those containing the kinked resorcinol units were fully amorphous with glass transition temperatures at 35 and 44 °C, respectively. Initial investigations of the chemical recyclability of the polyesters demonstrated that acylhydrazone units could be selectively cleaved to recover the original telechelic ketone-terminated polyesters, which could again be chain-extended to obtain a recycled polymer with molecular weights and properties very similar to those of the original material.

Abstract:Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is ubiquitous in the packaging industry owing to its flexibility, toughness, and low cost. However, it is typically contaminated with other materials, seriously limiting options for mechanical recycling. Interest in chemical recycling techniques such as pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction is growing, but most of these processes face technoeconomic challenges that have limited commercial deployment. This study concerns a hybrid chemomechanical approach using reactive twin-screw extrusion (TSE) for tailoring the molecular weight and chain structure of reclaimed LDPE. Two types of zeolite catalysts at several loading levels are evaluated over a range of processing conditions. Structural, thermal, and rheological properties of the extruded samples are investigated and compared to virgin LDPE and LDPE extruded without the catalyst. NMR spectroscopy is used to investigate changes in the structure of the polymer. LDPE extruded with microporous Y zeolite shows lower degradation temperature and increased short chain branching. Mesoporous MCM-41 also induces increased branching but has no effect on the degradation temperature. The theoretical mechanical energy input for the chemical modification is calculated by using process modeling. The demonstrated hybrid reactive extrusion process provides a potential low-cost, simple approach for repurposing LDPE-based flexible packaging as coatings and adhesives.
Converting inorganic sulfur into degradable thermoplastics and adhesives by copolymerization with cyclic disulfides

Abstract:Converting elementary sulfur into sulfur-rich polymers provides a sustainable strategy to replace fossil-fuel-based plastics. However, the low ring strain of eight-membered rings, i.e., S8 monomers, compromises their ring-opening polymerization (ROP) due to lack of an enthalpic driving force and as a consequence, poly(sulfur) is inherently unstable. Here we report that copolymerization with cyclic disulfides, e.g., 1,2-dithiolanes, can enable a simple and energy-saving way to convert elementary sulfur into sulfur-rich thermoplastics. The key strategy is to combine two types of ROP — both mediated by disulfide bond exchange — to tackle the thermodynamic instability of poly(sulfur). Meanwhile, the readily modifiable sidechain of the cyclic disulfides provides chemical space to engineer the mechanical properties and dynamic functions over a large range, e.g., self-repairing ability and degradability. Thus, this simple and robust system is expected to be a starting point for the organic transformation of inorganic sulfur toward sulfur-rich functional and green plastics.

Degradation of a Wholly Aromatic Main-Chain Thermotropic Liquid-Crystalline Polymer Mediated by Superbases

Abstract:Plastic circular economy needs to be established to solve environmental issues related to plastic waste. Superengineering plastics such as liquid-crystalline (LC) polymers exhibit excellent thermal and mechanical properties, resulting in poor degradability in natural environment. Herein, we report the degradation of a wholly aromatic thermotropic LC polyester, poly(4-hydroxybenzoic acid-co-6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid) (Vectra) mediated by superbases. Methanolysis and hydrolysis of Vectra yield its monomeric compounds, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, and their methyl esters. Among several transesterification catalysts explored, 1,5,7-triazabicylco[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) is the most suitable for the methanolysis of Vectra. The complete degradation of Vectra is achieved under reflux. The degradation proceeds heterogeneously via a surface erosion mechanism, preferentially starting from less chain-packed regions. Model reactions using aryl arylates reveal that monomeric compound-superbase complexes could mediate the cleavage of the ester bonds in both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. The ester bonds of Vectra have inherent poor reactivity and are protected by oriented robust structures of the polymer. Nevertheless, the superbases enable the degradation of Vectra via the cleavage of the ester bonds by methanol. These outcomes open the way for recycling high-performance plastics as well as demonstrate the feasibility of recovering precious aromatic compounds from plastic waste as aromatic feedstock.

Abstract:Thermosetting polymers possess high dimensional stability, chemical resistance and thermal stability, and they are indispensable for many applications. However, conventional thermosetting polymers cannot be reprocessed and reshaped due to their permanent cross-linked structure. Therefore, recycling of thermosetting polymers is a serious challenge. Degrading thermosetting polymers into soluble oligomers and reuse of the oligomers in new resin systems may provide a favorable way to solve this problem. In this work, we developed an efficient method for chemical degradation of anhydride-cured epoxy using environmentally benign phosphotungstic acid (HPW) aqueous solution as the catalyst system at a mild reaction temperature of 190 degrees C. During reaction, the ester bond in the cross-linked structure was selectively cleaved, and the thermosetting polymer was fully converted to oligomers that contain multifunctional reactive groups. When the decomposed matrix polymer (DMP) was used as a reactive ingredient and added up to 40 wt% in the preparation of a new anhydride-cured epoxy curing system, the resulting cross-linked polymers still retained the mechanical properties of the neat polymer.
Perspective on the Development of Monomer Recovery Technologies from Plastics Designed to Last

Abstract:In order to prevent the current unsustainable waste handling of the enormous volumes of end-of-use organic polymer material sent to landfilling or incineration, extensive research efforts have been devoted toward the development of appropriate solutions for the recycling of commercial thermoset polymers. The inability of such cross-linked polymers to be remelted once cured implies that mechanical recycling processes used for thermoplastic materials do not translate to the recycling of thermoset polymers. Moreover, the structural diversity within the materials from the use of different monomers as well as the use of such polymers for the fabrication of fiber-reinforced polymer composites make recycling of these materials highly challenging. In this Perspective, depolymerization strategies for thermoset polymers are discussed with an emphasis on recent advancements within our group on recovering polymer building blocks from polyurethane (PU) and epoxy-based materials. While these two represent the largest thermoset polymer groups with respect to the production volumes, the recycling landscapes for these classes of materials are vastly different. For PU, increased collaboration between academia and industry has resulted in major advancements within solvolysis, acidolysis, aminolysis, and split-phase glycolysis for polyol recovery, where several processes are being evaluated for further scaling studies. For epoxy-based materials, the molecular skeleton has no obvious target for chemical scission. Nevertheless, we have recently demonstrated the possibility of the disassembly of the epoxy polymer in fiber-reinforced composites for bisphenol A (BPA) recovery through catalytic C-O bond cleavage. Furthermore, a base promoted cleavage developed by us and others shows tremendous potential for the recovery of BPA from epoxy polymers. Further efforts are still required for evaluating the suitability of such monomer recovery strategies for epoxy materials at an industrial scale. Nonetheless, recent advancements as illustrated with the presented chemistry suggest that the future of thermoset polymer recycling could include processes that emphasize monomer recovery in an energy efficient manner for closed-loop recycling.

Abstract:In the pursuit of advanced functional polymer materials, sulfur-containing polymers have received tremendous attention owing to their superior chemical stability, high refractive indices, various supramolecular interactions, and robust dynamic covalent chemistry. However, their synthesis usually involves either expensive monomers or toxic byproducts and requires catalysts, thus hindering their widespread application. In this work, we present a catalyst-free multicomponent polymerization in organic solvents for the synthesis of various polydithiourethanes with excellent yields (up to 98 %) and high molecular weights (up to 112 kg/mol). This reaction involves the direct polymerization of carbon disulfide, an abundant one-carbon feedstock, with commercially available diamines and diacrylates. This polyaddition process demonstrates high atom economy and no byproduct, occurring at room temperature without the need for a catalyst, thus exhibiting excellent green chemistry metrics. By utilizing the dynamic covalent chemistry of dithiourethane groups, these polymers can be efficiently degraded via aminolysis and used to fabricate reprocessable vitrimers. This multicomponent polymerization opens up a new avenue for the efficient utilization of carbon disulfide resources and accelerates the exploration of diversified sulfur-containing functional polymer materials.

Abstract:The sustainable production of chemically recyclable polymers presents a significant opportunity to polymer scientists to tackle the growing environmental and energy problems of current petroleum-based plastics. Despite recent advances, however, there are still pressing needs for an expanded horizon of chemically recyclable polymers. Herein, we introduce a new paradigm of biosourced polythioesters (PTEs) with high polymerizability and complete recyclability under mild and economical conditions. The thiolactone monomers with a high ring strain can be easily prepared in a two-step process from 4-hydroxyproline. Controlled ring-opening polymerizations (ROP) using inexpensive and weak bases afford PTEs with high molar masses ( Mn) up to 259 kg mol-1 and narrow dispersities generally below 1.15. The properties of PTEs can be readily adjusted by copolymerization and/or pre/post-functionalization on the side chains. Selective and complete depolymerizations of the PTEs in dilute solution at ambient to modest temperatures recycle clean monomers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation of model reactions provides mechanistic insights and highlights the importance of judicious molecular design. Taken together, the unique ROP/depolymerization chemistry of such PTEs may offer a sustainable solution for creating and manufacturing high-value materials such as optical/photochemical plastics, self-immolative polymers, and degradable biomaterials under situations where recycle and reuse are indispensable.
Reprocessable Polymer Networks via Thiourethane Dynamic Chemistry: Recovery of Cross-link Density after Recycling and Proof-of-Principle Solvolysis Leading to Monomer Recovery

Abstract:Polythiourethane (PTU) can be synthesized by a type of click chemistry involving the reaction of thiols with isocyanates. To our knowledge, thiourethane dynamic chemistry has not been significantly explored from a fundamental standpoint and has only begun to be studied regarding its use in producing recyclable, reprocessable substitutes for traditional cross-linked polyurethane networks. Using model compounds, we demonstrated the dual nature of the mechanism associated with catalyzed thiourethane dynamic chemistry: at elevated temperature, thiourethane groups undergo exchange reactions with free thiol groups and thermal reversion to thiols and isocyanates. We used this chemistry to synthesize cross-linked PTU elastomers which, upon optimization, achieve full recovery of cross-link density and tensile properties after multiple, relatively rapid remolding cycles. We characterized stress relaxation as a function of temperature and stoichiometric imbalance to provide insight into the mechanism of the network structure change. A small level (10 mol %) of excess thiol groups reduces reversion, thereby suppressing undesired side reactions during reprocessing and promoting thiol–thiourethane exchange reactions, leading to excellent property recovery after multiple recycling steps. With a proof-of-concept demonstration, we also revealed the potential of recovering thiol monomer by solvolysis from PTU networks, which provides a second route for sustainable recycling. In addition to introducing thiourethane dynamic chemistry as a simple way to achieve high-value recyclability of polyurethane-type networks by reprocessing and/or monomer recovery, our study shows that tuning of the reaction stoichiometry may be a facile approach to optimize property recovery after reprocessing for some dynamic networks that exhibit property loss when at stoichiometric balance.
Preparation and Degradation of Waste Polycarbonate-Derived Epoxy Thermosets and Composites

Abstract:We report a robust, 100% atom-efficiency strategy for preparing waste polycarbonate (WPC)-derived epoxy resin. To demonstrate the preparation process, we perform a pyridine-catalyzed model reaction between diphenyl carbonate (DPC) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) in a molar ratio of 1:2. After epoxy-equivalent titration and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR) analysis, we confirm that the product is bis(1-(4-(2-(4-(oxiran-2-ylmethoxy)phenyl)propan-2-yl)phenoxy)-3-phenoxypropan-2-yl) carbonate (DPC-EP2). Based on the model reaction, three WPC-based epoxy resins (WPC-EPX, X = 2, 3, and 4) were prepared by the reaction of WPC with DGEBA in a molar ratio of 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4 in the presence of pyridine. The WPC-EPX epoxy resins were cured with WPC, phenol novolac (PN), diamino diphenylmethane (DDM), and dicyandiamide (DICY). The mechanical and thermal properties of the thermosets were discussed. We also prepared epoxy/carbon fiber composites and investigated the degradation of epoxy thermosets and the recycling of the carbon fiber. When the WPC-EP2 epoxy resin was cured with WPC, it can be successfully degraded to a phenoxy resin and 1,3-dihyexylurea through a catalyst-free aminolysis process. Undamaged carbon fibers have been recycled, according to the scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) and tensile stress–strain data. The transformation of WPC to WPC-EPX, the aminolysis of WPC-EP2/WPC to a phenoxy resin and 1,3-dihexylurea, and the recycling of carbon fiber in the composite have been successfully demonstrated. Therefore, we believe that this work contributes greatly to the field of “sustainable approaches in waste utilization.”

Abstract:The incorporation of dynamic covalent bonds into thermosets facilitates the reprocessing of polymer networks, thereby meeting the sustainable requirements for polymer recycling. However, the mechanical properties of many materials often decline significantly upon reprocessing due to side reactions caused by harsh processing conditions. In this work, we find that the aromatic dithiocarbamate bond can undergo dissociation under mild conditions without the need for a catalyst, enabling the efficient reprocessing of the corresponding polydithiourethane. As a consequence, the mechanical properties of the polydithiourethane can be largely preserved after reprocessing. The discovery of this dynamic chemistry is anticipated to broaden the potential for material design in dynamic covalent polymer networks.
Mechanically Robust Supramolecular Plastics with Energy-Saving and Highly Efficient Closed-Loop Recyclability

Abstract:Conventional plastics are usually incinerated or dumped in landfills and oceans after usage, leading to a considerable waste of resources and severe environmental pollution. Closed-loop recycling of plastics in an energy-saving and easy-to-conduct way remains an ongoing challenge. Herein, closed-loop recyclable supramolecular plastics with high mechanical robustness and excellent thermal stability are fabricated via dynamically cross-linking phenylboronic acid-terminated poly(aryl ether ketone) oligomers and small organic molecules with boroxines, denoted as PAEK-CB. Depending on the feed molar ratio of the monomers, the PAEK-CB plastics can exhibit a tensile strength of ∼46.7 MPa and a Young's modulus of ∼1.21 GPa. Owing to the dynamic nature of boroxines, the PAEK-CB plastics can be depolymerized in the N-methylpyrrolidone/ethanol mixture solvent. Thus, the monomers can be easily and efficiently recovered on their solubility difference in ethanol. The recovered monomers with high purity and isolated yields (>90% during the five recycling processes) can be used to remanufacture the PAEK-CB plastics without losing their original mechanical performance during five polymer–monomer–polymer cycles. Abstract:The problem of plastic waste in the environment calls for the development of new polymeric materials designed specifically for easy recycling at the end of their life cycle. Herein, we developed a green polymer system comprising a series of necklace‐shaped polydimethylsiloxanes bearing anthracene dimer units. The polymers have low environmental impact and are easily recycled. Furthermore, their flexibility and glass transition temperatures are easy to control. These necklace‐shaped inorganic polymers were synthesized by photopolymerizing (dimerizing) anthracene‐terminated oligo‐dimethylsiloxane monomers. A key achievement of the present work is the successful chemical recovery of the monomers from the polymers through thermal depolymerization, enabling monomer–polymer recycling. By applying equilibrium polymerization with base catalysts, we synthesized monomers with a controlled distributed chain length from monomers with a constant chain length. The necklace‐shaped polymers synthesized from these randomized monomers had amorphous structures, and readily formed transparent films. It was possible to modulate the thermal and mechanical properties of the polymers by controlling the average chain length of the polydimethylsiloxane between the anthracene dimers. This investigation presents a method for the synthesis and cyclic utilization of polymer materials with a wide range of applications, including plastics and elastomers.
