Abstract:The quest for sustainable waste management practices has catalysed the development of innovative approaches to transform waste into resourceful products. This study explores the effectiveness of cow bone waste and calcium oxide (CaO) as agents in the stabilization/solidification (S/S) process of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) fly ash derived from two distinct cities employing both grate-type and circulating fluidized bed incinerators in China. Employing a robust experimental framework, the research evaluated the stabilization efficacy for heavy metals, monitored the progression of pH, and quantified the compressive strength of the treated MSWI fly ash. Moreover, it conducted risk assessment and economic analyses. Incorporating CBW and CaO into the MSWI fly ash from grate-type incinerators significantly enhanced the Pb stabilization efficiency, achieving up to 99.7% when adding 31% CBW and 7% CaO. This treatment resulted in the leaching of other heavy metals, which were also below the standard landfill limits. In the circulating fluidized bed incinerator fly ash, the leaching concentrations of heavy metals in the treated samples were reduced by up to 98.6% for Cd and 64.4% for Ni.Additionally, an increase in CaO content was found to substantially improve the compressive strength of the solidified samples across all tested curing periods (7, 14, and 28 days). The optimal compressive strength result, observed at 28 days, reached 1.2MPa, compared to the raw fly ash, which exhibited only 0.77MPa when adding just 9% CaO. This highlights CaO's critical role in enhancing the mechanical integrity of the treated MSWI fly ash. The study concludes that strategically calibrated ratios of cow bone waste and CaO attenuate the environmental hazard presented by MSWI fly ash and bolster its mechanical attributes, thereby repurposing the waste into a viable material for construction.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste circulating fluidized bed incineration (MSWCFBI) fly ash was a hazardous waste, maintaining challenges for disposal. One effective approach was stabilizing the toxic heavy metal ions in the fly ash structures in situ. This work proposed a fusion–hydrothermal method, including fusion pretreatment in nitrogen atmosphere and microwave-assisted hydrothermal process, to treat three MSWCFBI fly ash samples. Specifically, leaching tests were performed to demonstrate the heavy metal stabilization. Through the treatment of the fusion–hydrothermal process, the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cr ions leaching from the fly ashes were obviously less than those of the raw fly ash and the sample only treated by hydrothermal process. Meanwhile, the heavy metal ions migrating from the fly ash to the hydrothermal residual liquid were reduced. Importantly, lots of zeolites formed during the fusion–hydrothermal process, such as to bermorite and sodalite. The fusion pretreatment significantly facilitated the conversion of quartz into amorphous silicon and silicate salts. Then, the silicon dissolution was accelerated and zeolite formation was promoted. Eventually, the heavy metal ions could be trapped in zeolite frameworks, enhancing the stabilization of heavy metal. Moreover, the cation-exchange capability values of the three treated fly ash were 1.099, 1.168, and 1.188 meq g−1, two-folder larger than those of the samples only treated by hydrothermal process. In summary, the fusion–hydrothermal method could facilitate the stabilization of heavy metal ions in the fly ash and the as-obtained solid product with high content of zeolite was promising for future applications.
Utilization of Mechanochemically Pretreated Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash for Supplementary Cementitious Material

Abstract:With the rapid development of municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration, the effective disposal and recycling utilization of fly ash is attracting increasing attention. The mechanochemical (MC) treatment as a non-thermal method shows good stabilization of heavy metals and degradation of dioxins in fly ash. The inhibition effect and long-term safety of CaSO4, Ca3(PO4)2, NaH2PO4, and composite additives (50 %NaH2PO4 +50 %CaO) as additives for heavy metals stabilization were investigated. The composite additive showed the best inhibitory effect on heavy metals, and the leaching concentration of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were decreased by 95.21 %, 46.84 %, 99.42 %, 49.91 %, 99.83 %, and 99.55 %, respectively. In addition, the modification by MC treatment reduced the particle size and increased the specific surface area of fly ash and improved the activity for resource utilization. Therefore, MC treated fly ash is used as supplementary cementitious material (SCM), which will produce a filling effect and pozzolanic effect improving the performance of fly ash concrete blocks. The compressive strength of the MC-treated fly ash concrete blocks curing for 28 days increased by 35.5 % and exceeded 40 MPa, close to OPC's strength. The concrete block also had a secondary inhibition on potentially toxic elements, making the resource utilization of fly ash more stable and safer. In general, the MC treatment and the utilization of MC-treated fly ash as SCM effectively inhibit the leaching of heavy metals in fly ash, delivering a promising method for green fly ash disposal.

Abstract:In this work, heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash from circulating fluidized bed (CFB) and grate furnaces were solidified by microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment. Three process additives of NaOH, Na2HPO4, and H2O were investigated to identify the optimal additive for most fly ash samples. The standard solid waste extraction procedure for measuring leaching toxicity, namely, the acetic acid buffer solution method (HJ/T 300-2007), was used to determine the heavy metal toxicity of all samples and experimental products. X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy were used to determine the characteristics of fly ash, including chemical compositions, mineral structures, and leaching concentrations of heavy metals. The experimental results revealed that Na2HPO4 was an efficient additive in the microwave-assisted hydrothermal process for solidifying heavy metals in fly ash. Under certain conditions, heavy metals were cured completely with only 20 min of microwave heating. Several types of zeolites were formed during the disposal process, which contributed to the solidification of heavy metals. Moreover, PO43-ions also played an important role in curing heavy metals. Microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment with the Na2HPO4 additive is demonstrated as an effective method for disposal of MSWI fly ash before transfer to landfills. Compared with previous studies, microwave assisted hydrothermal treatment offers a promising technology for management of MSWI fly ash with high efficiency and energy savings.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) is a hazardous by-product of the incineration process, characterized by elevated levels of heavy metals, chlorides, and dioxins. With a composition high in calcium but low in silicon/aluminum, MSWI-FA exhibits a poor immobilization effect, high energy demands, and limited pozzolanic activity when it is disposed of or reutilized alone. Conversely, alumina-/silica-containing waste (ASW) presents a chemical composition rich in SiO 2 and/or Al 2 O 3 , offering an opportunity for synergistic treatment with MSWI-FA to facilitate its harmless disposal and resource recovery. Despite the growing interest in co-treatment of MSWI-FA and ASW in recent years, a comprehensive evaluation of ASW's roles in this process remains absent from the existing literature. Therefore, this study endeavors to examine the advancement in the co-treatment of MSWI-FA and ASW, with the focus on three key aspects, i.e., elucidating the immobilization mechanisms by which ASW improves the solidification/stabilization of MSWI-FA, exploring the synergies between MSWI-FA and ASW in various thermal and mechanochemical treatments, and highlighting the benefits of incorporating ASW in the production of MSWI-FA-based building materials. Additionally, in the pursuit of sustainable solid waste management, this review identifies research gaps and delineates future prospects for the co-treatment of MSWI-FA and ASW.

Abstract:Incineration is becoming a promising and effective approach to dispose the increasing municipal solid waste, while the fly ash produced is another urgent problem needed to be addressed. Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) contains heavy metals and organic pollutants, which exert huge threat to human health and environmental safety. This paper analyzed the current situation of MSWI-FA, summarized the technologies of hazard-free treatment and resourceful utilization, expounded its future development trend. The latest thermal detoxification technologies of MSWI-FA were reviewed, including melting/vitrification, hydrothermal treatment and thermal plasma technology. The organic pollutants can be efficiently decomposed during the thermal treatment process, and the heavy metals can be stabilized, which was currently the most effective hazard-free treatment technology. The resource utilization technologies of MSWI-FA related to thermal treatment, including the application of MSWI-FA in the production of asphalt, cement, and glass ceramics, were reviewed. The life cycle assessment of various MSWI-FA treatment technologies were summarized and compared. The main principle was to make full use of the physicochemical characteristics of MSWI-FA, with its purpose to realize value-added utilization, and to decompose and stabilize the hazardous components during high-temperature process. The mechanism and technical characteristics of treating MSWI-FA through thermal detoxification and resource utilization were deeply summarized, and the future research work that needs to be further strengthened was proposed, thereby promoting the safe and effective treatment of MSWI-FA and realizing the green and sustainable development of the city.

Abstract:With the increasing production of incineration fly ash (FA), its disposal has attracted more and more attention. Based on the transformation behavior of the FA/clay system during the sintering process, the feasibility of preparing high-strength ceramics from FA/clay was evaluated from the theoretical analysis and experimental verification perspective. The theoretical analysis showed that mixing FA and clay can reduce the liquid formation temperature, promoting the sintering process. Meanwhile, according to the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 phase diagram, by controlling the addition of FA of 40 wt%, the potential balanced phases of the FA/clay system can be transformed into anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8), which is a typical ceramsite forming phase. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that anorthite was the dominant phase in the sintered FA/clay sample. The experimental verification results presented that under the addition of 40 wt% FA, the sintering temperature of 1200 °C, and the holding time of 20 min, the obtained ceramsite with extremely excellent strength performance and heavy metal stability can meet the quality requirements of lightweight aggregates. This study can provide a reference for the resource utilization of FA and related hazardous wastes.

Abstract:An electroquasistatic numerical model of polyethylene insulation affected by water trees is proposed in this study. The model includes dispersive materials (polyethylene and water trees) having the properties set after processing experimental results obtained by dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range 10-2-106 Hz, combined with the usage of two semi-analytical models for effective permittivity of dielectric mixtures. The numerical model is implemented in the finite element method of the software package COMSOL Multiphysics. The solution of the proposed model was computed for all frequencies tested in dielectric spectroscopy measurements, and the effective permittivity (real part) and loss tangent as resulting from the numerical model were compared with the experimental ones. The modeling results are close to the experimental data, thus showing that the inverse problem approach proposed in this work leads to a good estimation of the frequency dependent behavior of dielectric inclusions, such as the water trees grown in polyethylene insulation.

Abstract:Harmless disposal and resource utilization of hazardous industrial wastes has become an important issue with the green development of human society. However, resource utilization of hazardous solid wastes, such as the production of cementitious materials, is usually accompanied by a pretreatment process to remove adverse impurities that contaminate the final product. In this study, aluminum dross (AD) was thermally co-treated with another hazardous waste, municipal solid incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA), to synergistically solidify F and Na, control leaching of heavy metals, and remove chloride impurities. Significant crusting was observed when AD was thermally treated by itself, but not when AD and MSWI-FA were thermally co-treated. In the process of co-thermal treatment, the remaining Cl, Na, and K contents were reduced to as low as 0.3%, 1.8%, and 0.6%, respectively. CaO and SiO2 in MSWI-FA reacted with Na3AlF6 and Al2O3 in AD, and formed CaF2 and Na6(AlSiO4)6, which contributed to the prevention of crusting and limited the leaching concentrations of F and Na to below detection thresholds and 270.6 mg/L, respectively. In addition, heavy metals were well solidified, and dioxins were fully decomposed during thermal treatment. Finally, a sulfoaluminate cementitious material (SACM) with high early- and later-age strengths was successfully created via synergetic complementarity using thermally co-treated AD and MSWI-FA together with other solid wastes. Collectively, this study outlines a promising method for the efficient and sustainable utilization of AD and MSWI-FA.

Abstract:<p>Municipal solid waste incinerator fly ash (MSWI FA) is a type of waste that is harmful to the environment, and the melting treatment methods can treat MSWI FA, removing its potential negative impacts. However, special equipment is required for the FA melting process, which necessitates high costs. Metallurgical shaft furnaces (MSF) can melt MSWI FA efficiently. Therefore, the feasibility of using an MSF for FA treatment was studied herein. First, the fundamental physicochemical properties of the FA were analyzed. Then, the appearance and internal morphology of the FA were examined using a scanning electron microscope. Finally, melting experiments were designed according to the conditions of the MSF. The results show that slag changes into a glassy state under rapid cooling, which is beneficial to the solidification of harmful elements. These harmful elements, including Pb, Zn, and Cu, are thus reduced and volatilized into the flue gas under the MSF's reducing atmosphere. The harmful elements that enter the slag are solidified, causing its leaching toxicity to achieve the national standard requirements. Further, under the simulated MSF smelting conditions, the FA dioxin destroy removal efficiency realized more than 99.99% efficiency. Therefore, the harmless treatment of MAWI FA can be realized through MSF process.</p>

Abstract:With the development of municipal solid waste incineration technologies, the disposal of fly ash has become a difficult problem that many countries need to solve. High-temperature melting is a promising disposal technology. Based on this, a new process for collaborative treatment of fly ash in metallurgical blast furnaces had been proposed in this study. To explore the impact of disposal of fly ash on blast furnace production, by simulating the high-temperature reducing environment of blast furnaces, the melting changes of water-washed fly ash (W-FA), and the effects of W-FA injection on coal combustion and products (slag, iron) composition were studied. The results showed that W-FA, as a flux, could be sprayed into the blast furnace separately or mixed with coal. But when injected along with coal, W-FA would suppress the combustion of coal. After melting, the removal rates of S, P, Cl, and Pb in W-FA were 21%, 30%, 86%, and 89%, respectively. The removal rates of K, Na, and Zn were close to 100%, and Cr was basically not removed. When the proportion of W-FA to coal was less than 1%, in addition to controlling the alkalinity of the slag, the impact of W-FA on the composition of iron and slag was minimal. The successful execution of this work will not only achieve the reduction, harmless and resourceful utilization of fly ash, but also save investment and operating costs of disposal facilities, with both environmental and social benefits.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash (FA) is classified as hazardous waste, which requires additional treatment before disposal or further utilization. Stabilization/solidification (S/S) is regarded as a low-cost and high-efficient method for MSWI FA treatment. “Low-carbon S/S” has captured extensive interest in recent years, which could treat hazardous wastes and enable resource recycling in a sustainable way. This article introduced the state-of-art low-carbon S/S strategies for MSWI FA treatment. The immobilization mechanisms of pollutants in various matrices were also discussed. Abstract:The production of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) and municipal sludge (MS) has been increasing annually, raising concerns about proper disposal. In this study, a thermal treatment method with attributes of energy efficiency and complete detoxification was applied to synergistically convert MSWI-FA and MS into precursors for the synthesis of high-strength alkali-activated materials (AAMs). The impact of mass ratios of MSWI-FA and MS on the mineralogy, microstructure, and reactivity of obtained precursors were investigated. The mechanism of alkali activation was deeply studied by characterizing the evolution of reaction products. The strength development of synthesized AAMs was characterized in a one-year time scale, as well as the environmental compatibility. The results revealed that strength, with values ranging from 12.8–33.0 MPa at 3 d, 29.5–44.1 MPa at 28 d and 39.3–54.8 MPa at 365 d. Furthermore, after one year of curing, the release of Ni, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, and Ba from synthesized AAMs into both deionized water and acetic acid were far below the regulatory limits in China. All these contribute to promoting the safe disposal and effective valorization of MSWI-FA and MS.

Abstract:In China, municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) fly ash is classified as hazardous waste owing to its high concentration of leachable heavy metals and the presence of chlorinated organic compounds, such as dioxins and furans. In this study, the vitrification process based on thermal plasma technology has been employed to convert toxic incinerator fly ashes into harmless stable products. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test has been performed to evaluate the chemical resistance of the vitrified slag. The amount of heavy metals leached is much lower compared with the regulatory limit, which reveals that the contaminants are sufficiently immobilized in the silicate matrix and the produced slag satisfies the environmental standards. The microstructure, crystalline phase, as well as the density and porosity of the glass slag are also investigated. Such vitrified product with good quality has great potential to be used as a viable alternative for construction applications. These promising results indicate that thermal plasma vitrification process is very effective and reliable for stabilization, detoxification and recycling of MSWI fly ashes.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash, containing heavy metals and dioxins with strong toxicity and carcinogenicity, would pose severe harm to human health and the environment. This review details the chemical composition of MSWI fly ash, summarizes the sources and pollution characteristics of heavy metals and dioxins. In this paper, various solidification/stabilization (S/S) methods and the resource utilization of MSWI fly ash with S/S, such as cement solidification, geopolymer solidification, chemical stabilization and hydrothermal treatment are comprehensively discussed. Besides, the principle of heavy metals stabilization and the mechanism of dioxins degradation are analyzed in detail. Moreover, an overall comparison of these approaches for the harmless treatment of MSWI fly ash, including pollutants solidification/decomposition, advantages, disadvantages and resource utilization approach, is carried out. The risk assessment methods of solidified and stabilized products for heavy metals were discussed. Finally, studying on degradation of dioxin and enrichment of heavy metals in MSWI fly ash by multi-synergistic treatment, inhibiting the leaching of pollutants into aqueous solution during solidification are proposed. This paper is expected to provide some reasonable development directions for the environmentally safer treatment and resource utilization of MSWI fly ash.

Abstract:Incineration has been widely used to dispose municipal solid wastes (MSWs) with heat recovery. The generation of fly ash (FA, around 3 similar to 5 wt% of the fed amount) that is normally defined as hazardous wastes remains a serious problem. It is ideal to work out a way to reutilize FA for valuable use instead of landfilling. As a novel utilization technology for municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash, geopolymerization can produce geopolymer as construction materials with the advantages of low energy consumption, low pollution and high utilization rate. In this paper, metakaolin (MK) and washed fly ash (WFA) were used to prepare MSWI fly ashbased geopolymer (FAG) with alkali activator. Besides, the strength, heavy metals immobilization and acid resistance of FAG were in detail studied. Under the proper formulation, all the prepared FAGs exhibited strength higher than MU15 level (>= 15 MPa) and the maximized one reached MU30 (>= 30 MPa). Heavy metals including Cr, Mn, Cu, As, Pb, Zn and Cd had a immobilization rate of more than 92%, and others like As, Pb and Zn were nearly fully immobilized. As for the simulated testing for acid rain scenario, FAG could still fix up the heavy metals well indicating a controllable risk for the environment, which could be ascribed be its high acid neutralization capacity. In a word, this work reports a feasible method for treatment and resource reutilization of MSWI fly ash.
Introducing Reactive Magnesia to Activate Chloride/Sulfate in Waste Incinerator Fly Ash for Immobilization of Potentially Toxic Elements

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) is globally classified as hazardous waste due to its high levels of complex pollutants and leachable chloride. Typically, chloride in MSWI FA necessitates washing treatment, constituting a significant portion of the total treatment cost. Unlike traditionally removing chloride, this study employs chloride/sulfate in MSWI FA to activate magnesia, generating hydrates for the immobilization of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Results showed that chloride and sulfate in MSWI FA could form magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) and magnesium oxysulfate cement (MOSC) hydrates with the aid of crystal nuclei. The MOC and MOSC systems exhibit differentiated bonding mechanisms for typical PTEs (e.g., Pb and Zn) in MSWI FA. The MOSC system demonstrated better immobilization efficiency for Pb than that of the MOC system due to the formation of insoluble PbSO4 precipitates. In contrast, the MOC system displayed better immobilization performance on Zn than that of the MOSC system due to the superior stability of hydration crystal compounds MgZnCl45H(2)O over hydroxide precipitation. Practical application demonstrated that MSWI FA could be solidified using magnesia cement, resulting in satisfactory mechanical strength and efficient PTE immobilization. Overall, this study offered a novel perspective on utilizing components within MSWI FA for enhancing its subsequent stabilization/solidification treatment.

Abstract:Swelling caused by gas generated from municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) when it is mixed with alkali limits its uses. Besides, the leaching of anion salts and heavy metals contained in MSWIFA poses a high risk to environment. This study presents the feasibility of a one-step alkaline washing, one-step thermal quenching and two-step combination of alkaline washing and thermal quenching pretreatment methods in altering the key properties of MSWIFA for promoting its reusability. It was found that apart from H 2 (gas), NH 3 (gas) was also generated during the alkaline washing of the MSWIFA. Besides, pretreatments led to the reduction in particle size, the increase in pore volume and specific surface area of the MSWIFA, as well as the removal of chloride and sulfate anions. All the pretreatment methods were effective in reducing leaching of heavy metals to below levels of nonhazardous waste except Cd and Pb with alkaline washing. Furthermore, both the chemical Frattini test and the mechanical activity index test showed improvement in pozzolanic activities of the MSWIFA after the pretreatments. Overall, the combined pretreatment method was most effective in eliminating gas emission, and reducing leaching of metal ions and anions from the ash, while enhancing the pozzolanic activity of the ash.

Abstract:With the rapid pace of socioeconomic progress, there has been a continuous rise in the generation of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash. Enhancing the efficiency of MSWI fly ash utilization, minimizing expenses, and developing more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable cementitious materials represent critical scientific challenges that warrant immediate attention. The research commenced with the preliminary treatment of MSWI fly ash using a blend of chemical activators and a water rinsing method. Following this, quicklime and coal fly ash were incorporated to formulate a geopolymer derived from MSWI, aimed at stabilizing the MSWI fly ash. Throughout this investigation, a selection of five chemical activators—calcium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, dilute sulfuric acid, and citric acid—was employed in conjunction with a water-washing procedure to condition the MSWI fly ash. Three single factor experiments denoted A, B, and C, were designed, and the corresponding geopolymer samples were prepared. In this research, the analysis focused on the solidified MSWI fly ash-based geopolymer samples, examining their physical and chemical characteristics, compressive strength, levels of heavy metal release, and the structure at a microscopic level. The findings revealed that the B3 series exhibited the most substantial 28-day compressive strength, reaching 1.692 MPa. Concurrently, the concentrations of leached heavy metals, including zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni), were all beneath the regulatory thresholds stipulated by the GB16889 and GB18598 criteria, signifying a notably effective solidification outcome. During the geopolymerization process, gel phases such as calcium aluminosilicate hydrate (C-A-S-H) and calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) are formed within the geopolymer matrix. This leads to the formation of a compact and cohesive cementitious material, which showcases superior mechanical strength and a robust capacity for heavy metal sequestration. This research contributes to the safe management of MSWI fly ash by not only facilitating its non-hazardous disposal but also enabling the efficient containment and elimination of heavy metals, chloride ions, and elemental aluminum.
