Abstract:It is challenging to efficiently and economically recycle many lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of the low valuation of commodity metals and materials, such as LiFePO4. There are millions of tons of spent LIBs where the barrier to recycling is economical, and to make recycling more feasible, it is required that the value of the processed recycled material exceeds the value of raw commodity materials. The presented research illustrates improved profitability and economics for recycling spent LIBs by utilizing the surplus energy in lithiated graphite to drive the preparation of organolithiums to add value to the recycled lithium materials. This study methodology demonstrates that the surplus energy of lithiated graphite obtained from spent LIBs can be utilized to prepare high-value organolithiums, thereby significantly improving the economic profitability of LIB recycling. Organolithiums (R-O-Li and R-Li) were prepared using alkyl alcohol (R-OH) and alkyl bromide (R-Br) as substrates, where R includes varying hindered alkyl hydrocarbons. The organolithiums extracted from per kilogram of recycled LIBs can increase the economic value between $29.5 and $226.5 kg(-1) cell. The value of the organolithiums is at least 5.4 times the total theoretical value of spent materials, improving the profitability of recycling LIBs over traditional pyrometallurgical ($0.86 kg(-1) cell), hydrometallurgical ($1.00 kg(-1) cell), and physical direct recycling methods ($5.40 kg(-1) cell).
Strengthening Valuable Metal Recovery from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries by Environmentally Friendly Reductive Thermal Treatment and Electrochemical Leaching

Abstract:The traditional acid leaching method for recycling valuable metals from the cathode material of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has encountered the problems of high consumption of H2SO4 and reducing agents. In this study, a novel process has been developed to strengthen valuable metal recovery from spent lithium-ion batteries by reductive thermal treatment and electrochemical leaching. With the help of reductive thermal treatment under the conditions of R = 1600 °C and 120 min, the layered structure of the cathode material LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 is reduced to a mixture of Li2CO3, NiO, Co3O4, Mn2O3, and MnO2 due to the oxygen releasing from the framework. The destruction of the layered crystal structure reduces the difficulty of leaching valuable metals. 90.59% Ni, 90.53% Co, 66.40% Mn, and 100% Li were leached under the optimal conditions of 20 mL/g liquid–solid ratio, 1.5 M H2SO4, 0.8 A, and 150 min at room temperature. Comparing the processes of reductive thermal treatment with acid leaching and direct electrochemical leaching of spent cathode material under the same leaching conditions, the proposed approach can achieve the highest metal recovery and economic benefits. Abstract:Simple and environment-friendly recovery of valuable metals from spent LIBs was explored. The experimental method, which included reduction roasting and hydrometallurgical recovery, is called a quasi-reversible process. The principle behind the quasi-reversible model could be used to assess the energy consumed during the recovery of metals from cathode active materials. The roasting process was analysed using TG–DSC and Kissinger equation. XRD patterns and mass loss ratios were used to investigate the layered LiNixCoyMnzO2 that broke into Li2CO3, MnO, NiO, Ni and Co. Roasting temperature, coke dosage and roasting time were assessed to determine the leaching efficiency of Li, Ni, Co and Mn. Results indicated that the optimum roasting conditions were roasting temperature of 650 °C, coke dosage of 10% and roasting time of 30 min. The roasted products under the optimum parameters were used to leach the valuable metals, and the leaching efficiencies of Li, Ni, Co and Mn were 93.67%, 93.33%, 98.08% and 98.68%, respectively. Li2CO3 solution recovered from water leaching could be utilised to produce Li2CO3 by evaporative crystallisation. Moreover, divalent solution of Ni, Co and Mn obtained via acid leaching without added reducer could be recycled in the co-precipitation of the ternary precursor.

Abstract:The recycling of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has great significance for environmental protection and resource conservation. In this paper, a low-temperature clean chlorination roasting-water leaching process was proposed to simultaneously extract Li, Ni, Co and Mn from cathode material (NCM) of spent LIBs. The temperature range of chlorination roasting was determined by thermodynamic analysis to be 250-600 °C. The effect of some factors on the conversion of valuable metals in the process of chlorination roasting and water leaching was systematically studied. The results showed that more than 98 % of Li, Co, Ni and Mn could be extracted under optimized chlorination roasting and water leaching conditions. The chlorination roasting mechanism and phase transformation evolution was determined by means of thermodynamic analysis, TG-DTA, XRD, SEM and EDS. The extraction of valuable metals was realized by the reaction of the metal oxides produced by the decomposition of NCM with NH4Cl or its evolved HCl to form water-soluble metal chlorides or chlorinated metal-ammonium complexes. The chlorination technique using NH4Cl provided an effective and clean approach for the simultaneous extraction of Li, Co, Ni and Mn from spent LIBs.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of the increasing amounts of lithium-ion batteries, it is reducing environmental pollution and relieving the stress on resource requirements through the sustainable recycling of spent lithium batteries. Here we targeted the reduction of the material phase by methane roasting and then achieved a step separation of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn by differentiation in water solubility and magnetic strength. The principal reduction factors were also optimized. The results show that the spent cathode powder converts mainly to water-soluble Li 2 CO 3 , that the leaching selectivity of lithium is 100%, and that other metals can be separated by wet magnetic separation under optimal conditions. A reasonable explanation of the phase conversion during the reduction process is provided, and a preliminary process evaluation is presented at the end. Notably, this work has the strengths of step recovery of elements, rapid processing, and zero chemical use, which has great potential for the industrial recycling field and provides a new idea for the development of green and efficient valuable metal recovery technologies for spent LIBs.

Abstract:Due to the mounting pressure to mitigate environmental pollution and guarantee the sustainability of the battery metals, the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has become a crucial issue in recent years. Numerous studies have focused on utilizing high temperatures or strong acid/alkali to reduce the spent active cathode material to a low valence state, which exacerbates recycling and post-treatment costs. Herein, a low-temperature roasting process followed by a water leaching strategy is developed to recycle and regenerate LiCoO2 cathode material from spent LiCoO2 batteries. The spent LiCoO2 is roasted with glucose (C6H12O6) as a reagent to attain reduction of the cathode material into water-soluble Li salt (Li2O and Li2CO3) and water-insoluble (Co and CoO). The proposed method utilizes moderate roasting temperature and water as the only leaching reagent, which effectively reduces energy and chemical consumption. Li and Co recovery rates are 97 % and 99 %, respectively, under the optimal conditions of 1 h roasting at 550 °C followed by 30 min water leaching using a solid–liquid ratio of 50 g/L. The recovered Li-rich solution and Co-rich residue can be easily converted to Li2CO3 and Co3O4, respectively, which are the precursors for regenerating the LiCoO2 cathode material. The regenerated LiCoO2 exhibits superior cycling stability with 87 % capacity retention after 800 cycles at 4.4 V. This developed closed-loop recycling process has lower recycling costs, is eco-friendly and efficient, and thus could potentially promote the sustainable long-run development of the LIBs industry.

Abstract:Lithium supply risk is increasing and driving rapid progress in lithium recovery schemes from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, a facile recycling process consisting mainly of reduction roasting and NaHCO3 leaching was adopted to improve lithium recovery. The Li of spent LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 powder were converted to Li2CO3 and LiAlO2 with the reduction effect of C and residual Al in the roasting process. NaHCO3 leaching was utilized to selectively dissolve lithium from Li2CO3 and water-insoluble LiAlO2. The activation energy of NaHCO3 leaching was 9.31 kJ∙mol-1 and the leaching of lithium was a diffusion control reaction. More than 95.19 % lithium was leached and recovered as a Li2CO3 product with a purity of 99.80 %. Thus, this approach provides a green path to selective recovery of lithium with good economics.

Abstract:The increasing market size of high-energy storage systems due to the booming of not only portable electronic devices but also electrical vehicles and renewable energy sources has promoted battery technologies, resulting in many spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This study focuses on proposing a closed-loop process to recycle the full valuable metals from spent LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 material. Reduction roasting and hydrometallurgy were combined and used for de-agglomeration of cathode composites and enhanced recycling of valuable metals. Experimental results showed the cathode material was reduced to Ni, Co, Li2CO3, and MnO under microwave carbothermic reduction, and lithium carbonate was directly recovered after dissolved in water with a high yield of 99%. Afterward, transition metals (Ni, Co, Mn) enriched residues can be dissolved in fumaric acid with leaching efficiencies of more than 96% under optimized leaching conditions, and finally recovered as single compounds by step-wise addition of chemicals. The mechanism of the nonthermal effect of microwave on the leaching of metals was analyzed by kinetic studies, and the decreased Ea values for metals demonstrate that microwave treatment is beneficial for metals leaching through decreasing their apparent energies. Besides, the characterization results of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope indicate the destruction of the layered crystal structure and an increased liberation degree after microwave treatment, which is also beneficial for the enhancement of metals leaching. Therefore, the microwave reductive-assisted process is found in a green and effective industrial process to recycle valuable metals from spent LIBs.

Abstract:The rapid growth in demand for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) results in the generation of a vast amount of spent LIBs. Recovery of valuable metals from spent LIBs is required in terms of environmental protection and natural resource conservation. Here, we developed a novel process for the sustainable recovery of Li and Co from spent LiCoO2 cathodes based on in situ reductive roasting. In the operation of reductive roasting, Al foil in the cathode performs as an in situ reductive reagent converting LiCoO2 into Li2O, CoO, and Al2O3. Lithium and aluminum in roasting products can be selectively leached in a NaOH solution with a leaching efficiency of 93.67% and 95.59%, respectively. In the meantime, cobalt, in the form of CoO, is concentrated in the alkaline leaching residue, which can be completely dissolved in H2SO4 solution. The obtained CoSO4 solution with Co concentration higher than 160 g/L is beneficial for the following evaporation and crystallization operation. Comparing with traditional processes, the present in situ reductive roasting process features as no need for separation of active materials from Al and none external reductants adding, which can make the recycling process Of spent LIBs simpler, more sustainable, and more economical.

Abstract:With the annual increase in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) disposal, valuable resources are being generated with worrying waste, so it is strategically important to recover the critical metals from them. Individual high temperature or leaching processes do not apparently achieve very satisfactory results. In the present work, the reduction with zinc powder was able to convert the lithium in LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM) to soluble LiOH, while the reduction and ammonia complexation environment generated by the decomposition of cysteine (Cys) achieved an efficient leaching of transition metals without additional additives. The leaching efficiency of Li can reach more than 92 %, while that of Ni/Co/Mn reaches more than 97 % through the regulation of the parameters of each process. In particular, an in-situ redox mechanism is proposed to explain the efficient leaching of transition metals, which further enriches the theory of spent LIBs recycling and provides a promising idea for various hydrometallurgical extraction systems.

Abstract:The cathode materials of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) were recovered via reductive roasting, Na2CO3 leaching, and ammonia leaching. The effects of roasting parameters, Na2CO3 leaching parameters, and ammonia leaching parameters on the leaching efficiencies of metals were explored. The results show that the mineral phase of spent LIBs is reconstructed during reductive roasting, and more than 99% of Li can be preferentially leached via Na2CO3 leaching. Ni (99.7%) and Co (99.9%) can be leached via one-step ammonia leaching, and Mn cannot be leached. Thus, good leaching selectivity is achieved. The kinetic study shows that the leaching of Ni and Co conforms to chemical reaction control.

Abstract:The remarkably increasing consumption of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) has been an issue worldwide for the contained valuable metals and intrinsic toxicity in spent LIBs. Here, a novel process including selective leaching and precipitation has been developed for recovery of spent LIBs. The carbothermic reduction of spent LiNxCoyMn1-x-yO2 was applied to control the reduction degree of target metallic elements. Afterward, H3PO4 solution was utilized to selectively leach 99.1% of Li and 96.3% of Mn, and excellent leaching selectivity was achieved for that merely 4.5% of Co and 1.2% of Ni were dissolved. After increasing the concentrations of Li and Mn to 23.14 and 53.03 g/L by two-stage cross-current leaching, Li and Mn were precipitated and recovered in sequence by simply adjusting pH of the leaching lixivium, and compounds of Mn-3(PO4)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and MnHPO4 center dot 3H(2)O as well as Li3PO4 were obtained. The Ni-Co alloy contained in the filtration residue could be separated by wet magnetic separation and further recovered. It was the first time to synchronously leach Li and Mn while Co and Ni were separated simultaneously in a single leaching operation, which could greatly benefit the subsequent separation and recovery. The selective leaching and precipitation are efficient and facile and enjoy superiority over conventional processes of recycling spent LIBs.

Abstract:The use of carbon thermal reduction roasting method to recover lithium resources from spent lithium-ion batteries (S-LIBs) provides an important opportunity. The preferential extraction of Li+ by reduction roasting has been widely studied. While the extraction of Li+ from mixed cathode materials is rarely reported. Herein, this paper proposes a method based on carbon thermal reduction to preferentially extract Li+ from mixed cathode materials. It was confirmed that there are differences in the carbon thermal reduction products at 700 °C -850 by thermodynamic analysis of the carbon thermal reduction process. At the same time, the effects of factors such as roasting temperature, roasting time and material ratio on Li+ leaching efficiency were investigated. The Li+ recovery rate reached 98.86% under the optimal conditions of holding at 750 °C for 4 h with the molar ratio of mixed cathode materials to graphite was 1:0.25. The recovered Li2CO3 can be directly used as a lithium source for the regeneration of cathode materials. This study will provide new opportunities for the efficient recycling of S-LIBs mixtures.

Abstract:The proliferation of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is a growing concern in the expanding electric vehicles (EVs) market. Recycling spent ternary LIBs significantly relieves environmental pressure and reduces resource waste. In this study, a reduction roasting-leaching process utilizing graphite was present to selectively recover lithium from spent ternary LIBs cathode. In detail, the selective leaching behavior of lithium elements under different roasting parameters was investigated. And a thorough analysis of the carbothermal reduction (CTR) process was then conducted to evaluate the process thermodynamically. The experimental results show that the roasted products of the cathode material are Li2CO3, MnO, NiO, CoO, Ni, and Co with process parameters of 10 wt% graphite content, 700 ℃, and 90 min roasting. 84.11 % of lithium elements are preferentially leached through the water-leaching process after CTR roasting. The technology not only promotes the recycling of waste resources but also provides a viable solution for the sustainable development of the LIBs industry.

Abstract:In this study, a promising process has been developed for selective recovery of valuable metals from spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs). First, reduction roasting which used spent anode powder as reduction agent and water immersion are applied to preferentially recover lithium. Subsequently, an ammonia leaching method is adopted to eff ;ectively separate nickel and cobalt from water immersion residue. Results indicate that Li2CO3, (NiO)m·(MnO)n, Ni, Co are the ultimate reduction products at 650 °C for 1 h with 5% anode powder. 82.2 % Li is preferentially leached via water immersion after reduction roasting and Li2CO3 products are obtained by evaporation crystallization. Thermodynamics shows that reducing ammonia leaching is feasible for water immersion residue. Amounts of 97.7 % Ni and 99.1 % Co can be selectively leached by NH3·H2O and (NH4)2SO3 while Mn remain in the residue as (NH4)2Mn(SO3)2·H2O, (NH4)2Mn(SO4)2·6H2O and (NH4)2Mn2(SO3)3 under the optimized conditions. Ammonia leaching kinetic show the activation energy of Ni and Co is 84.44 kJ/mol and 91.73 kJ/mol, which indicate the controlling steps are the chemical reaction. Summarily, the whole process achieves the maximum degree of selective recovery and reduces the environmental pollution caused by the multistep purification.

Abstract:A combined process was investigated to recover valuable metals from LiNixCoyMnzO2 cathode materials of spent lithium-ion batteries. In this approach, the cathode materials were first roasted with graphite which recycled from anode materials, and then conducted to a reductant-free sulfuric acid leaching for efficient recovery of valuable metals. The reduction roasting was meticulously investigated to control the composition of roasted products, and the physicochemical changes of the cathode materials in the reduction thermal treatment was studied by XRD, TGA, XPS, SEM and EDS analyses. The experimental results show that under the optimum processing conditions of 600 °C, 3 h, and mass ratio of cathode materials to anode graphite of 6:1, the mixed electrode materials can be transformed into the desired phase of CoO, NiO, MnO and Li2CO3 primarily. Being different from obtaining Co and Ni metallic phase in reduction roasting, producing CoO and NiO benefit to a lower energy consumption, no H2 emission in the leaching process, and more facile conditions for complete leaching. More than 99% of Ni, Co and Li were extracted, and more than 97% of Mn was leached without adding reductant under the optimum conditions: 1.05 times of theoretical H2SO4 consumption, and L/S = 6 ml·g-1 at 85 °C for 1 h. This promising process can not only make efficient use of waste anode graphite, save energy consumption, but also avoid generation of massive H2 in the subsequent facile leaching of valuable metals.

Abstract:Recycling valuable metals in spent LIBs is not only in line with the purpose of resource recycling but also an important measure for environmental protection. In this article, a process using biomass reduction roasting followed by a unique complexation-assisted ammonia leaching is proposed. Using waste areca powder (WAP) as a biomass reducing agent, the roasted residue is leached in an aqueous solution for the carbonate. The leaching efficiencies of Ni, Co, and Mn reach over 99% under ammonia leaching conditions of 1.5 M ammonium citrate (AC), 3 M ethylenediamine (EDA). The kinetics of ammonia leaching indicates the activation energies of Ni, Co, and Mn are 51.8 kJ mol −1 , 47.7 kJ mol −1 , and 40.8 kJ mol −1 , respectively, which shows the whole duration is controlled by chemical reactions. Most importantly, this study systematically explores the mechanism of ammonia leaching and provided a useful recommendation for selecting the right ammonium salt.

Abstract:The traditional liquid acid leaching method for recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has serious environmental pollution and unsafe transportation. In this study, solid sodium bisulfate was applied as a leaching agent to recover lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese from the cathode active material of spent LIBs in the presence of a reductant, hydrogen peroxide. It was found that the leaching efficiencies were approximately 93.0, 91.5, 95.5 and 96.6%, respectively, for Ni, Co, Mn and Li under the conditions of 1 mol/L NaHSO4 and 3 vol% H2O2 as reductant within 30 min at 70 °C and a pulp density of 20 g/L. Kinetic data for the dissolution of valuable metals in the temperature range 40–70 °C showed the kinetic model governed by the Avrami equation. The apparent activation energies for leaching of Ni, Co, Mn and Li were determined as 43.8, 44.2, 42.2 and 27.5 kJ/mol, respectively, indicating that the leaching process was controlled by a surface chemical reaction. This process can be a convenient alternative method for recovering valuable metals from spent LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2.

Abstract:This study innovatively combines mechanochemistry and high-temperature thermal reduction to achieve the recovery of valuable metals from spent LIBs. First, under the action of mechanical force, the crystal structure of lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) found in the cathode materials of spent LIBs was destroyed and converted into lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) and Li-free residue (C/Co3O4) using dry ice as a co-grinding reagent. The optimum Li2CO3 recovery conditions were determined to be as follows: a ratio of dry ice: LiCoO2 powder mass of 20:1; a rotation speed of 700 rpm, and a reaction time of 1.5 h. With these conditions the maximum percentage of Li2CO3 recovered was 95.04 wt%. The Co3O4 in Li-free residue was reduced to a high-value Co0 product via a high-temperature (800 °C) heat treatment. Gibbs free energy analysis confirmed that the carbon in the Li-free residue could be used as a self-reducing reagent for the thermal reduction of Co3O4. The reactants and products of each step were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, XPS and SEM techniques. The green route for recycling spent LIBs that this study proposes realizes the green and cost-effective conversion of LiCoO2 to high-value products, which may become an outstanding example of recycling spent LIBs.

Abstract:Spent Li-ion battery(LIB)recycling has become a challenge with the rapidly developing electric vehicle(EV)industry.To address the problems of high cost and low recovery of Li in the recycling of spent LIBs using traditional hydrometallurgical processes,we developed an alkali metal catalytic carbothermic reduction method to recover spent LiNixCoyMnzO2(NCM).Using alkali metal catalysts,such as NaOH,significantly reduced the tem-perature required for carbothermic NCM material reduc-tion and realized targeted control of the phase of the reduction product,where Li was first separated by prior water leaching,followed by Ni,Co,and Mn recycling by acid leaching.The optimized carbothermic reduction con-ditions were a reaction time of 3 h,temperature of 550 ℃,NaOH dosage of 15 wt％,and graphite dosage of 15 wt％.The Li leaching efficiency reached 78.5 wt％during water leaching.And during acid leaching,the Ni,Co and Mn leaching efficiencies were 99.8 wt％,99.7 wt％,and 99.5 wt％,respectively.This study provides strong technical support for the development of LIB industry.
