Abstract:A Novel Composite Anchorage System with Dispersed CFRP Tendons. A novel composite anchorage with dispersed arrangement of carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons was proposed. The bonding length and constraint ratio of the dispersed‐tendon composite anchorage were determined by numerical simulation. Six groups of multi‐CFRP tendon composite anchorage systems (MTCAS) were tested to investigate their static performance. The axial force dispersion coefficient cv and relative slip ratio coefficient δ were proposed to evaluate the static performance of the MTCAS with variables, including pre‐tension load, the inner inclination angle of the sleeve and the modified bonding medium. Results demonstrated that increasing the bonding length and restraint ratio of steel sleeve could improve the stress state of tendon in the anchorage. The anchorage with a bonding length of 280 mm and a constraint ratio of the sleeve of 0.90 can reliably anchor multiple CFRP tendons arranged in a dispersed arrangement. An inner inclination angle of 3.1° of the sleeve can be adopted on the premise that strength utilization ratio is guaranteed and anchorage diameter meets the requirements. An adequate pre‐tension load can reduce the slips of tendons, and the recommended pre‐tension load value should not exceed 0.7 Fptk. The 0.25% basalt fiber‐modified epoxy resin anchorage obtained the highest strength utilization ratio. Highlights A novel composite anchorage with dispersed carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer tendons was designed. New mechanical parameters evaluating anchorage performance were proposed. Basalt fiber (BF)‐modified epoxy resin (ER) can improve anchoring performance. The 0.25% BF‐modified ER anchorage obtained the highest strength utilization ratio. Pre‐tension load should not exceed 0.7 times the theoretical tensile load.

Abstract:Carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates are promising materials for cables and prestress tendons in structural engineering for the excellent tensile performance, light in weight and anti-corrosion character. Anchoring has always been the main challenge of this high-performance material due to its anisotropy and brittleness. Corrugated anchors are high-efficiency clamping-type anchorage devices. Nevertheless, premature failure of the CFRP plates can still be observed with this type of anchors, and the anchor efficiency for the corrugated anchors needs further improvement. This paper proposes a novel configuration of corrugated anchors. Experimental tests are then carried out to investigate the influence of the pre-tensioning bolt load and adhesive layer. Consequently, numerical analysis is conducted to reveal the anchoring mechanism. The results indicate the traditional corrugated anchors lead to non-uniform stress distribution in the CFRP plate, and with the proposed configuration the anchor efficiency can be increased up to 100 %.

Abstract:We have examined the possibility of obtaining primary cultures from breast tissue utilizing a method especially developed for breast epithelium. The number of specimens able to grow in culture was very high: 82.8%, 64.3 %, 75.0 % and 77.8 %, respectively, for primary breast cancer, skin recurrences, inflammatory breast cancer and normal breast tissue. In our experience, growth was not related to menopausal status or histopathologic type, whereas for skin recurrences, a prior pharmacologic treatment (chemotherapy) of the patient enhanced the growth capacity of the tissue. This culture method could help to study the basic biology of breast epithelia and to improve the chemotherapy approach of breast cancer patients.

Abstract:Corrosion resistance, high strength, and advantageous strength-to-weight ratio enable fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) to have substantial potential to replace steel tendons in prestressed applications. One of the main technical obstacles to wide use of FRPs in the construction industry is the methodology to anchor FRP tendons to achieve their full strength. High tensile to compression and shear strength ratios make it necessary to develop a new anchorage design concept for FRP tendons. This paper gives a literature review of bond-type anchorage systems and the mechanics of stress transfer by bond from FRP tendons to grout and reports an experimental study on a newly developed bond-type anchorage system with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) Leadline 8-mm-diameter rods. The test program consisted of nine monotonic tensile tests, two pullout tests, and two proving tests on the anchorage system with Leadline single- or 9-rod tendons. The test results showed that the developed anchorage system with 250-mm bond length ensures full development of the tensile strength of Leadline mono-rod tendons. The bond strength of Leadline 9-rod tendons is 14 MPa for a bond length of 95 mm, 62% of that of mono-rod ones with a bond length of 80 mm. The anchorage system with a 400-mm bond length gives at least 90% of the tensile strength of Leadline 9-rod tendons and also demonstrates an acceptable sustained loading behaviour in accordance with existing codes.Key words: anchorage, bond stress, creep, grout, polymers, rod, slip, tendon.

Abstract:In this study, we proposed a novel composite anchorage that considers the anchoring performance and dimension simultaneously. The design concept of this composite anchorage was first introduced, followed by comparison with the traditional inner-cone bond-type anchorage and traditional composite anchorage through theoretical and experimental methods. Then, a parametric study was conducted to determine the influence of different parameters on the anchoring performance, and the optimal design parameters were recommended according to the finite element (FE) and test results. Finally, the practicability of the optimal design parameters were validated through experiments on the anchorage with multiple CFRP tendons. Results showed that the novel composite anchorage could improve the anchoring performance compared with the traditional inner-cone bond-type anchorage by promoting increased anchorage efficiency by 60.4% and, with an ideal failure mode of tendon rupture. Moreover, the novel composite anchorage had smaller dimensions and avoided the presence of a vulnerable position at the junction of the mechanical and bond parts compared with the traditional composite anchorage. In addition, a group of optimal design parameters of this composite anchorage with a pre-tightening force of 130 kN, an inclinational differential angle of 0.1°, an inclination angle of 2.9°, and an embedded length of 30 d~40 d were proposed. The composite anchorage with five CFRP tendons designed with the proposed parameters failed with the rupture of the tendons and exhibited an anchoring efficiency of 1.05. This result showed that the optimal parameters were suitable for this novel composite anchorage to grip multiple tendons. This study can provide an experimental and theoretical basis for designing large-tonnage anchorage for multiple FRP tendons used as hangers or cables in real bridges.

Abstract:The small-sized variable-stiffness wedge (VSW) anchorage, a second-generation solution, was numerically optimized to anchor basalt-fiber-reinforced polymer tendons, building upon the previous first-generation anchorage. The static, fatigue, and relaxation characteristics of the anchorage were experimentally evaluated. Results revealed that VSWs effectively mitigated radial stress concentration within the tendons compared to constant stiffness wedges. Bonding optimization techniques involving cross-splitting and sandblasting proved advantageous in accurately assessing the tensile properties of round tendons. The second-generation anchorage demonstrated an 87% anchoring efficiency, surpassing that of a longer commercial steel-wedge anchorage significantly. The tendon-anchorage assembly can sustain 2 million cyclic loadings under a maximum fatigue stress of 0.44 f fpk (standard value for tendon tensile strength) and a stress range of 0.04 f fpk; moreover, sliding between wedges and tendons resulted in negligible stress reduction across various stress ranges. A logarithmic function effectively modeled the relationship between relaxation time and load retention in tendons with R-squared values consistently above 0.94 throughout; furthermore, the million-hour relaxation rate closely aligned with observed tendon behavior. The application of an initial tensile stress of 0.5 f fpk to tendons allowed for simultaneous high strength and minimal prestress loss.

Abstract:The bond type anchorage is most suitable for anchoring carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons, but its shape causes stress concentration. In addition, the failure modes of bonded anchors are difficult to observe and the damage process is difficult to analyze. The aim of this study was to address the above problems. To relieve the stress concentration, a novel arcuate-cone bond type anchorage was designed in this study. The failure modes and load-slip curves were obtained by tension tests on a group of anchors. The test results indicated that the stress concentration can be effectively alleviated. Acoustic emission technique was used to monitor the damage process of bond type anchorages under tension load. By analyzing the acoustic emission data, the damage process of bond type anchorage can be divided into three stages and the different failure modes can be identified. Finally, the failure mechanism of bonded anchorages was discussed based on the test results and monitoring data.

Abstract:This study builds a refined finite element (FE) model to research the flexural behavior of a reinforced beam with prestressed CFRP tendons. The precision of the FE model is validated through a comparison with the experimental outcomes. The numerical findings align well with the experimental outcomes, encompassing the failure mode, load-deflection curve, load-strain curves of concrete, steel reinforcements and CFRP tendons. The variances between predicted values and experimental results are within 10%. Leveraging the verified FE model, an extensive parametric study has been carried out to examine the effects of various parameters, including the CFRP tendon prestress, the CFRP tendon diameter, the deviator layout, the anchorage height and the prestressing strand prestress. Leveraging the findings from the parametric study, some refined design recommendations are proposed for practical reinforcement applications: Increasing the CFRP tendon prestress in practical reinforcement designs is recommended; CFRP tendons with larger diameters are recommended for use in practical reinforcement designs; Employing a linear CFRP tendon profile for reinforcement is not considered optimal in practical applications; The prestress loss in the prestressing strands of PC beams should be considered in practice.

Effect of Tendon-Related Variables on the Behavior of Externally CFRP Prestressed Concrete Beams.

Abstract:This work assesses the flexural performance of prestressed concrete beams with external carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons, focusing on tendon-related variables. A finite element analysis (FEA) method is verified. A numerical parametric analysis of prestressed concrete beams with external CFRP tendons is carried out. Four tendon-related variables are considered, namely, the area, initial prestress, depth and elastic modulus of tendons. The analysis shows that flexural ductility decreases as the tendon area, initial prestress or elastic modulus increases but is insensitive to the tendon depth. The ultimate tendon stress increment (Δσp) is influenced by all of the four variables investigated. JGJ 92-2016 (Chinese technical specification for concrete structures prestressed with unbonded tendons) significantly underestimates Δσp and, hence, is over-conservative for the strength design of these beams. An equation is proposed for calculating Δσp, taking into account all four variables investigated. An analytical model is then developed to estimate the flexural strength (Mu) of prestressed concrete beams with external CFRP tendons. The proposed analytical model shows good agreement with FEA, i.e., the mean discrepancy for Δσp is 0.9% with a standard deviation of 11.1%; and the mean discrepancy for Mu is −1.6% with a standard deviation of 2.1%.

Abstract:The fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) has begun to show great application prospects in structural strengthening, especially for seismic strengthening. However, a poor monolithic response of fabric and mortar limits the utility ratio of the fabric and the mechanical properties of FRCM. A simple, fast, and efficient method for improving the bonding properties of the fabric-mortar interface to enhance the performance of the FRCM plate remains to be investigated. In this study, uniaxial tensile tests on 42 carbon fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (C-FRCM) plates with anchored carbon fiber bundles were performed to analyze the influence of anchorages on their mechanical properties, and to compare them to the prior results of pull-out tests of anchored carbon fiber bundles. The results show that the ultimate tensile stress, the energy dissipation, and the fiber utility ratio can be increased significantly after anchoring, but the anchorage cannot fully restrict the slippage of fiber fabrics. The effect of other variables, such as the bond length of steel plates, the number of fabric layers, and mortar strength, were also tested and discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The combination of low clinker high-performance concrete (LCHPC) and ultra-high modulus (UHM) carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons was recently proposed for prestressed structural elements. The 70% reduction in cement content resulting in limited creep and shrinkage of the LCHPC in comparison to a conventional high-performance concrete (HPC) and the very high UHM-CFRP tendon stiffness (> 509 GPa) were expected to impact the mechanical behaviour of such structures. This study focuses on the behaviour of 3 m-long beam specimens during prestressing, concrete hardening and in 4 point-bending experiments. Fibre optic sensors were implemented inside the CFRP tendons to measure strain during those stages and a digital image correlation system was employed to monitor the 4-point-bending tests. After 28 days, the LCHPC recipe, despite a 70% cement reduction and much smaller environmental footprint, did not show measurable differences in the prestress loss behaviour in comparison to a conventional HPC. The UHM-CFRP prestressing tendons, because of their stiffness, showed both higher prestress losses of around 40% and on average a nearly doubled prestress transfer length. However, they increased the beam`s maximum load-bearing capacity by 21% and showed 47% less deflection at failure in comparison to beams prestressed with the standard modulus (UTS)-CFRP tendons.

Abstract:Pre-stressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendon system is developed. Extrusion method guarantees the strength of the CFRP tendon could be fully used in strengthening. The pre-stressed CFRP tendons are applied to strengthen aluminum beams and portable aluminum bridge to improve the flexural rigidity and load carrying capacity of these structures and the improvements are revealed by the experiments. Applying extruded CFRP tendon-anchor system, the load carrying ability of the pre-stressed aluminum bridge has an improvement of 25%. Structural models are proposed to investigate the pre-stressing effects, including the deflection and the load capacity under different design criteria. Finite element method (FEM) is applied to analyze the nonlinear behavior of the pre-stressed beam and reveal the plastic torsional buckling failure style. All these analyses agree well with the experiments and suggest accurate methods to design pre-stressed aluminum/CFRP structures.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons have a high potential to replace steel ones in bridge structures. However, concerns have been raised about their poor transverse properties, particularly when CFRP tendons experience combined tensile and bending loads, as in externally pre-stressed structures. This paper aims to understand and predict the bending behaviors of CFRP tendons with a pretension load. The experiment investigated the static bending behaviors of the CFRP tendon with pretension ratios ranging from 0 to 0.6. The pretension load stiffens the bending behavior of CFRP tendons, and a lower pretension ratio leads to an obvious increase in both the maximum bending load and energy dissipation. An analytical model was proposed to predict the load-deflection relationship and threshold pretension ratio of CFRP tendons under combined tensile and bending loads. The proposed model is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel three-segment CFRP cable anchorage to address stress concentration challenges in CFRP cable anchors. The anchorage features a continuously varying inner cone angle along the anchor length to prevent excessive radial stress on the CFRP cable. The radial stress distribution is theoretically analyzed, followed by a numerical simulation design using the Tsai-Wu failure criterion and the anchor system's equivalent stiffness as evaluation indices. The results demonstrate a 47.06 % and 45.73 % reduction in the radial stress peak of the novel anchorage compared to the inner cone and inner cone + straight cylinder anchorage, respectively. Importantly, beyond an anchor length 23 times the equivalent diameter of the CFRP tendon, increasing length has a marginal impact on anchor efficiency but diminishes equivalent stiffness. Positive effects are observed by increasing the inner cone segment proportion and adjusting the inner cone angle within the 2° to 4° range. Conversely, increasing the bonding medium thickness reduces anchor efficiency and equivalent stiffness. Experimental verification indicates the anchor system achieving 99.83 % anchor efficiency. Moreover, the axial strain of CFRP tendons in the anchor zone exhibits a linear trend along the anchor length, with test stresses at corresponding positions consistent with FE calculation results.

Abstract:CFRP has the potential to replace steel cables in large-span cable-stayed bridges due to its high strength and lightweight material properties. However, the weak lateral force performance of CFRP material creates the challenge of anchoring. This study introduces a new inner cone + arc + straight cylinder bond-type anchorage system to optimize CFRP tendons' force state. Experimental and finite element analyses verified the new anchoring system's performance. In static load tensile tests, six groups of seven CFRP tendon anchorage systems with different sleeve grooves were used to study the failure mode and load–strain variation law. The difference in mechanical properties between the new and traditional anchorage is evaluated in the finite element analysis. The results indicate that the new anchorage system can lower the stress concentration in the anchorage zone and enhance anchorage performance. The groove design of the sleeve can effectively increase the anchoring efficiency, where the groove depth is proportional to the anchoring efficiency and the groove spacing is inversely proportional to the anchoring efficiency. The magnitude of the stress inhomogeneity in the multi-tendon anchoring system during tensioning is proportional to the beginning conditions and the load size. When the inner wall of the sleeve becomes more abrasive, the force heterogeneity of the anchorage system reduces. The tests and finite element analysis show that the new anchoring may improve stress distribution and anchorage efficiency. In engineering practice, it can be utilized as a dependable anchorage system.

Abstract:To enhance the flexural performance of steel-concrete composite beams in the negative moment region, an external prestressing technique utilizing Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) tendons was implemented for reinforcement. This article designed and manufactured 6 test beams for static load testing, and compared the changes in mechanical properties of the test beams before and after reinforcement, such as failure mode, deflection, CFRP tendons stress increment, strain, and cracks. A specific focus was given to exploring the impact of varying prestressing levels and the quantity of CFRP tendons on the flexural performance of composite beams in the negative moment region. Based on the plastic hinge theory, a new calculation model for the flexural bearing capacity of externally prestressed CFRP tendon-reinforced composite beams was established. The use of externally prestressed CFRP tendons reinforcement has a significant reinforcement effect, which can improve the elastic working range and ultimate bending bearing capacity of the composite beam in the negative bending moment zone, and effectively limit the development of concrete slab cracks in the negative bending moment zone. Theoretical values obtained from the proposed model in this study showed good agreement with experimental values, enabling accurate calculation of the incremental stress in externally prestressed CFRP tendons and the ultimate bearing capacity of composite beams. The study also provides a reasonable range for controlling the prestress level of CFRP tendons, which can serve as a reference for practical engineering design.

Abstract:Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is ideal for bridge reinforcement due to its high strength, light weight, and corrosion resistance. Studies on the friction loss of CFRP tendons in a bending state form an important part of advancing the application of CFRP materials to external prestressing strengthening technology. To understand the magnitude and variation of interfacial friction loss of prestressed CFRP tendons under bending conditions, 12 single-bending prestressing tension tests and 4 three-consecutive-bending prestressing tension tests were conducted in this study. Two bending radii of 1.5 m and 2 m, two bending angles of 20° and 30°, and three contact surfaces with different friction coefficients were selected for the steering block condition to measure the friction loss under each stage of tensioning prestress. On this basis, a model for calculating the friction loss rate on the surface of prestressed CFRP tendons was derived for the change of contact stress between CFRP tendons and deflectors during the installation and tensioning stages. The results show that the friction loss of external prestressed CFRP tendons is mainly related to four external factors: bending radius, steering angle, friction coefficient, and the magnitude of tensioning prestress; with the increase of prestress, the friction loss rate goes through three stages, the rising stage, the falling stage, and the stable stage; in the process of friction loss rate change, the main influencing factor controlling the magnitude of friction loss rate changes from bending radius to steering angle. In the theoretical calculation model of friction loss rate, the calculation model of the prestressed CFRP tendons under multiple successive bends can be simplified to a combination of several calculation models for a single bend. This study provides a reference for the engineering field of strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) beams using external prestressed CFRP tendons.

Computer Simulations of End-Tapering Anchorages of EBR FRP-Strengthened Prestressed Concrete Slabs at Service Conditions

Abstract:This article examines numerically the behavior of prestressed reinforced concrete slabs strengthened with externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) consisting of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets. The non-linear finite element (FE) program Abaqus® is used to model EBR FRP-strengthened prestressed concrete slabs tested previously in four-point bending. After the calibration of the computational models, a parametric study is then conducted to assess the influence of the FRP axial stiffness (thickness and modulus of elasticity) on the interfacial normal and shear stresses. The numerical analysis results show that increasing the thickness or the elastic modulus of the FRP strengthening affects the efficiency of the FRP bonding and makes it susceptible to earlier debonding failures. A tapering technique is proposed in wet lay-up applications since multiple FRP layers are often required. It is shown that by gradually decreasing the thickness of the FRP strengthening, the concentration of stress along the plate end can be reduced, and thus, the overall strengthening performance is maximized. The tapering is successful in reducing the bond stress concentrations by up to 15%, which can be sufficient to prevent concrete rip-off and peel-off debonding failure modes. This article contributes towards a better understanding of the debonding phenomena in FRP-strengthened elements in flexure and towards the development of more efficient computational tools to analyze such structures.
