Abstract:This paper investigates the thermal aging and degradation of high voltage cable insulation materials. XLPE samples from a 4-year operated high voltage cable (old cable) and from a freshly produced high voltage cable (new cable) before and after thermal aging were prepared. The mechanical tensile test, DC conductivity test and AC breakdown test were performed to evaluate the mechanical and electrical properties of the samples. The test results show that the ultimate tensile strength and the elongation at break of the samples decrease significantly after thermal aging. Meanwhile, the DC conductivity of the samples increases, but the AC breakdown strength decreases, and the life time parameter of the XLPE decreases. It is found that the thermal aging can accelerate the XLPE degradation, which leads to the decrease of the mechanical properties of XLPE, and makes the molecular chain susceptible to break. Therefore, the AC breakdown strength and the overall insulation properties of the XLPE decrease.

Abstract:Thermal ageing of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation cable is considered as a critical factor and can change the insulation properties distinctly. This paper presents the influence of thermal ageing on the insulation properties of 500 kV DC XLPE submarine cable insulation. The cable insulation is cut into three layers (inner layer, middle layer and outer layer) in a cylindrical shape. The thermal aging is carried out at 106°C for 250, 500, 750 and 1000 hours, respectively. The electrical and materials properties are analyzed. The result shows that the evident hetero charges are accumulated inside the unaged middle layer. The thermal aging can reduce the local space charge accumulation and the electric field distortion rate, whereas it decreases the DC conductivity of the samples. Diffraction peak intensity of (110) and (200) crystal are affected due to the thermal ageing. The transmittance peak of the C-O-C symmetric stretching vibration peak is observed. It is found that the thermal ageing of a short time is helpful to improve the physical and chemical properties of the samples. The material analysis shows that the oxidation process is suppressed by the antioxidant.
Effect of Tensile Stress on Insulation Properties of 500 Kv EHVAC XLPE Cable under Multi-Field Ageing

Abstract:Using submarine cables to connect offshore wind farms and oil drilling platforms for power transmission and distribution has become the optimal choice for offshore energy projects. Studying the impact of complex laying environments during the actual operation of extra-high voltage AC (EHVAC) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) submarine cables has become imminent. This study investigates the impact of multi-field ageing on the insulation properties of 500 kV EHVAC submarine cables. The ring-cut samples with a thickness of 0.15 mm are aged at a fixed temperature of 110°C and electric field of 20 kV/mm, while being subjected to varying tensile stresses from 30 N up to 80 N. The aged XLPE samples are analyzed through crystalline analysis, dielectric properties and AC breakdown measurements at 30°C and 70 °C. The results suggest that as tensile stress increases, aged samples exhibit a notable reduction in crystallinity and AC breakdown strength, alongside an improvement in the dielectric constant. It concludes that stretching the XLPE samples leads to molecular chain breakage, resulting in an increase in defects between lattices and amorphous regions, consequently making the polarization easier to establish. Also, the increase of the tensile stress will accelerate the degradation of the insulation layer of the 500 kV EHVAC submarine cables.

Abstract:Polymeric nanocomposite insulations are receiving the widespread attention of the electrical cable industry. This paper presents the electrical insulation performance of as-received commercial 320 kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE)/MgO nanocomposite material with reference to the pure XLPE. The results of this commercial-grade electrical insulation material are not reported hitherto. The scanning electron microscopy confirms the well-dispersed nanofiller inside the polymer matrix. The DC electrical insulation performance is investigated by DC breakdown strength, space charge, DC electrical conductivity, and surface potential decay measurements. The test samples are subjected to the thermal aging at 135 degrees C for 30 days. The un-aged nanocomposite exhibits 20% higher DC breakdown strength, negligible hetero space charge accumulation, and the lower DC conductivity by one order than the un-aged pure XLPE. Moreover, thermally aged nanocomposite shows more restraint to the deterioration of its properties. After the thermal aging, the DC breakdown strength decreased by 38% and 20% in the pure XLPE and its nanocomposite, respectively. Thermally aged nanocomposite shows negligible hetero charges and an increase in the DC conductivity by one order. However, the pure XLPE shows higher hetero charge accumulation and the increased DC conductivity by one order. In un-aged XLPE nanocomposite higher crystallinity, higher deep trap density, and the lower carbonyl index are found to be the primary attributes of its improved performance. It is postulated that these significantly unchanged attributes can be the reason for the better anti-thermal aging properties of the XLPE nanocomposite.
Breakdown Characteristics and Electrical Life Evaluation of 500 Kv EHVAC Cable Insulation at Different Temperatures

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of operating temperature on the breakdown strength and aging life parameter of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation for 500 kV extra-high voltage alternating current (EHVAC) cables. The test samples were cut from a properly degassed real 500 kV XLPE cable. The continuous-rising voltage breakdown tests and step-up voltage breakdown tests were conducted at 30 °C, 50 °C, 70 °C, and 90 °C, respectively. The results show that, the AC breakdown strength decreases with increasing operating temperature regardless of the thickness of XLPE samples. When the temperature is 70 °C or below, increasing the thickness of samples effectively slows down the decreasing trend of the breakdown strength. However, at 90 °C, increasing the sample thickness cannot resist the decrease in AC breakdown strength. By analyzing the aging life curves of the XLPE samples at different temperatures, it is found that the aging life parameters of the XLPE samples at 30 °C and 90 °C are 18 and 14, respectively. It is perceived from testing results that even after continuous operation for 40 years, the tested XLPE material can possess AC breakdown strengths of 44.6 MV/m and 28.3 MV/m at 30 °C and 90°C, respectively. This study provides a reference basis for the design of insulation thickness and the electrical life assessment of 500 kV EHVAC cables during the long-term operation.

Abstract:This paper presents an estimate for the influence of service time on the conduction current characteristics of a 10 kV AC XLPE. The experimental conduction current results show that the space charge accumulation threshold increases with service time. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments show increased thermo-oxidative aging and reduced crystallinity as the service time increases. This results in deeper traps in the XLPE material which can be verified from isothermal surface potential decay experiments. Based on the experimental results, the numerical analysis of thermo-electric fields is carried out for 10 kV AC XLPE cables with different service times under bipolar DC operation mode. It shows that the DC power for 10 kV AC XLPE cable in bipolar DC operation is higher than the AC power, whereas the DC operating voltage and DC power increases with the service time. In order to ensure a safe and long service life of the cables in DC operation, a conductor temperature of 60 degrees C and DC operating voltage of 11 kV are recommended for 10 kV AC XLPE cables in bipolar DC operation.

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of thermal aging on the insulation properties of voltage stabilizer blended cross-linked polyethylene was studied. The test samples of XLPE and XLPE/voltage stabilizer consisting of 1 wt% m-aminobenzoic acid were prepared. The electrical properties of the samples were characterized by DC breakdown test, DC conductivity test and space charge test at 30 °C, 50 °C and 70 °C, respectively. The results show that the addition of the voltage stabilizer can effectively decrease the DC conductivity, suppress the space charge accumulation, and improve the breakdown strength of the XLPE. However, the blends after thermal aging show a high DC conductivity, severe space charge accumulation and low breakdown strength, similar to the pure XLPE. The simulation results based on the GROMACS show that thermal aging accelerates the migration of the voltage stabilizer and then leads to phase separation, which eventually decreases the insulation properties of the XLPE.
DC Insulation Properties of Commercial Grade 320 Kv HVDC XLPE/MgO Nanocomposite Material

Abstract:The cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) nanocomposite insulations exhibit the improved electrical properties for the high voltage cable application. This paper compares the DC insulation properties of as-received 320 kV HVDC XLPE/MgO nanocomposite material with the reference to pure XLPE at 25 °C test temperature. The MgO nanofiller dispersion is analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DC breakdown strength is measured by applying the ramp voltage at a rate of 0.5 kV/s and space charge is measured at 50 kV/mm using the pulse electroacoustic system. Moreover, the test samples are exposed to the thermal aging at 135 °C for 30 days inside the hot-air oven. The fresh XLPE nanocomposite samples exhibit 20% higher DC breakdown strength and negligible hetero charge accumulation near the anode than fresh pure XLPE. The aforementioned properties of XLPE nanocomposite remain largely unaffected as compared to pure XLPE after its thermal aging. The thermal aging of pure XLPE decreases its DC breakdown strength by 38%, whereas the XLPE nanocomposite shows a 20% decrease. The thermal aging generates negligible hetero charges near the anode. However, significant hetero charges are accumulated near both electrodes after thermal aging inside the pure XLPE. The enhanced performance of the XLPE nanocomposite against thermal aging properties is attributed to its intact morphology.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of long-length and large-capacity power transmission around the world, the $\pm 525$ kV high voltage direct current (HVDC) Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) cable system has been widely recognized as the potential technology for power transmission. To further enhance the HVDC cable transmission capacity at a more economical level, the high conductor operation temperature is indispensable. However, higher temperature is more dangerous for XLPE cable insulation especially under HVDC stress. Therefore, it is recommended by Cigre TB 852 [1] that the high temperature performance of insulation material should be examined. Various dielectric insulation tests at different temperatures are performed on sliced XLPE samples from real HVDC cable. The testing results are carefully analyzed and can provide guidance for the efficient design of insulation system for high temperature $\pm 525\text{kV}$ HVDC cable system applications.

Abstract:This paper presents the influence of thermal ageing on the physico-chemical and electrical properties of 500 kV extra high voltage direct current (EHVDC) XLPE cable insulation. EHVDC XLPE cable sections are placed in a thermal oven and thermally aged at 106 °C (melting peak temperature) for 250, 500 and 1000 h. After ageing, the inner, middle and outer layers of the cable insulation are characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, oxidation induction time, X-ray diffraction (XRD), space charge, DC conductivity and DC breakdown measurements. The physicochemical analysis results show that the cross-linking by-products in the cable insulation are difficult to be completely removed during the ageing process, whereas the thermal ageing cannot completely consume the antioxidants in the materials. The space charge measurement results show that the hetero charges are accumulated inside the unaged middle layer samples. However, the space charge accumulation and electrical conductivity of the samples are significantly reduced after 1000 h ageing. Moreover, the DC breakdown strength of the inner and middle layer samples is continually increased with the increase of the ageing time. It is elucidated that the thermal ageing leads to the re-crystallization and re-degassing of samples, improving the space charge behavior and the charge carrier trapping phenomenon. It is proposed that the temperature of 106 °C could be used as a suitable degassing temperature for the EHVDC XLPE cable production.

Abstract:The aim of the paper is to present the influence of thermal ageing on the space charge characteristics, DC conductivities and trap energy levels of DC XLPE materials. A commercial compound for 320 kV HVDC XLPE cables was used for sample preparations. XLPE films were made by a heating press method in the laboratory. The samples were placed in a thermal oven and thermally aged at 130 □ up to 21 days. Space charges were measured by a pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method setup developed in the high voltage laboratory. The results showed that the reference samples had limited hetero charge accumulations near both electrodes in the samples. The homo-charge accumulation was appeared with an increase of the aged time. The electric field increased gradually with the appearance of the homo-charge accumulation in the samples. The conductivity of the sample aged for 21 day increased three orders of the magnitude from 30 °C to 60 °C. It was found that a turning point of the conductivity appeared for the aged sample at 40 °C, 50 °C and 60 °C, respectively. An increase of the trap energy density and a reduction of the trap level could facilitate the homo charge accumulation in the sample aged for 21 days. The bipolar homo-charge accumulation was elucidated as an essential characteristic in the thermally aged samples.

Abstract:An optimal degassing treatment duration for the preparation of commercial 500 kV extra high voltage direct current (EHVDC) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation can improve its overall properties, reduce the manufacturing cost and time, which is urgently needed for high voltage cables suppliers. This paper analyzes the effect of different degassing duration on the content of cross-linking by-products, morphological structure and insulation properties of 500 kV EHVDC XLPE insulation. The raw pellets of commercial 500 kV EHVDC XLPE cable material are used to prepare the test samples by the hot-pressing method. Five samples with the different degassing durations of 0 h, 12 h, 36 h, 90 h, and 200 h were at 70 degrees C. Physico-chemical and electrical methods are used to characterize the overall properties of the material under the different degassing durations. The results show that the measured content of the crosslinking by-products is consistent with the theoretical values calculated by Fick's second law. The oxidation induction time of the samples is reduced and tensile properties are improved with the increase of the degassing time. Furthermore, degassing treatment increased the lamellae thickness in the early stages and reduced the difference in the internal aggregation structure of the material. It was found that the degassing treatment significantly suppressed the space charge accumulation inside the material. Moreover, the degassing treatment of 36 h can increase the dielectric breakdown strength and reduce the current density of the samples. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Electrical treeing is among the main mechanisms responsible for electric breakdown in polymeric high voltage cables. In this paper, electrical treeing in electro-thermally aged low density polyethylene (LDPE) was evaluated by means of a real-time microscopic detection system. A wire – plane electrode test object with semiconducting tab was used in the study. The ageing was performed at a constant temperature of 80°C and an applied DC voltage of 10 kV of both polarities and lasted from 100 up to 800 hours. For testing the resistances to electrical treeing, tests were performed by applying 50 Hz AC voltage at a ramping speed of 0.5 kV/s. The obtained experimental results showed that mainly the thermal component of the ageing had an influence on electrical treeing parameters, namely on the initiation voltage as well as the shape and occurrence frequency of the trees. With an increase of the ageing time, the tree inception voltage gradually decreased.

Abstract:This paper reports the effect of thermal ageing on the space charge characteristics, DC conductivities and trap energy distributions of 320 kV HVDC XLPE. Space charges were measured by a pulsed electro-acoustic setup. The results showed that the reference samples had limited hetero charge accumulations near both electrodes in the samples. The homo-charge accumulation was appeared with an increase of the aged time. The space charge accumulation in the samples was transferred from hetero-charge accumulation to homo-charge accumulation with an increase of the ageing time. The electric field distribution in the sample gradually increased with the appearance of the homo-charge accumulation, whereas the homo charges evidently distorted the electric field in the samples with the increasing ageing time. The DC conductivities of the aged samples consistently increased with the increase of the measured electric field. The obtained results of apparent mobility of the charge carriers, the activation energy and the trap energy density illustrated that thermal ageing could facilitate the homo-charge accumulation in the sample. The dominant effect of thermal ageing on the sample was elucidated by using various analytical techniques. It was found that the thermal ageing would affect the material properties and facilitate the increase of the trap energy density and the space charge accumulations in the samples.
Insulation Properties and Interfacial Quantum Chemical Analysis of Cross-Linked Polyethylene under Different Degassing Time for HVDC Cable Factory Joint Applications

Abstract:Degassing treatment is critical to remove cross-linking by-products in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable factory joints and prevent early insulation deterioration. In this article, 500-kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cable factory joint samples were prepared, and the physicochemical and temperature-dependent electrical properties of the samples under different degassing times were investigated. The results show that prolonged degassing treatment increases the crystallinity and reduces the tensile properties of the XLPE samples. The samples without degassing have visible micropores near the interface, and these micropores can be eliminated after a longer degassing time. In addition, degassing treatment can reduce the current density, increase the threshold field strength, and enhance the breakdown strength of the samples. A significant negative charge accumulation appears at the interface of the sample without degassing, which dramatically distorts the electric field. Long-term degassing treatment can improve this phenomenon, and the accumulated charge at the interface at elevated temperatures is significantly reduced. Furthermore, a model of the molecular chain microstructure at the interface before and after degassing is proposed. The molecular chain’s energy band structure and electron cloud distribution at the interface are analyzed based on quantum chemical calculation. It is found that cable makers can improve the insulation properties of cable factory joints by appropriately extending the degassing time to avoid interface deterioration.
Effect of thermo-oxidative aging on thermal elongation performance of XLPE insulation for high-voltage cables

Abstract:The thermal elongation of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation for high-voltage cables is an important factor for evaluating the high-temperature mechanical performance, which is an important parameter included in the testing standards of the power cable insulation. Previous studies have found that the thermal elongation of XLPE insulation for high-voltage cable depends on the cross-linking degree, but have not dealt with the effect of the thermo-oxidative aging during the thermal elongation test. In this paper, the thermal elongation experiments of the XLPE samples compounded with different kinds of antioxidants were carried out under both air and nitrogen atmospheres. The molecular structure changes of the XLPE samples after thermal elongation under air atmosphere were examined by gel content, FTIR spectra and X-ray diffraction. The oxidation induction periods were also measured to analyze the antioxidation performance of the phenolic antioxidants and study its contribution to the thermal elongation performance. The results showed that the XLPE samples underwent thermo-oxidative aging in the thermal elongation test under air atmosphere at 200°C. It caused that the thermal elongation properties can not accurately reflect the cross-linking degree of the original XLPE samples, but has a strong correlation with the gel content of the aged samples. Antioxidants can inhibit the thermo-oxidative aging effect on the network structure, leading to a slower uptrend of elongation under the air atmosphere. This indicates that the thermal elongation performance of XLPE insulation is determined by the synergistic effect of the network structure and the antioxidation performance, and this can provide reference significance for optimizing the evaluation methods of high-voltage cable XLPE insulation performance.

Abstract:This paper presents electrical treeing behavior in low density polyethylene (LDPE) and cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) after exposure to thermal and DC electro-thermal ageing. Both the ageing and the treeing tests were performed by means of two different types of test objects with wire-plane electrode geometry. One type of the tested objects contained only wire electrode of 10 μm diameter, whereas in the other type the wire electrode was attached through a semiconducting tab. The ageing was performed at 80°C with and without 10 kV DC voltage of both polarities connected to the wire and lasted up to 800 hours. The AC electrical treeing tests were applied afterwards for detecting changes of material properties after the ageing. The results showed that the electrical tree inception voltage consistently decreased with increasing time of thermal exposure, whereas the applied DC electric stress had a negligible effect on the observed behavior. Similar effects were found in both the tested materials (LDPE and XLPE) though the object type also influenced the results. For the objects with semiconducting tab, a higher level of the scale parameter was registered because of shielding effect of the tab on the electric field strength at the wire electrode. It also yielded less number of trees growing in parallel at the electrode. The dominant effect of thermal stress on the ageing of LDPE was elucidated by using various analytical techniques, like differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and oxidation induction time, and it is believed to mainly affect antioxidant content in the test objects.
Research on the Thermal Aging Characteristics of Crosslinked Polyethylene Cables Based on Polarization and Depolarization Current Measurement

Abstract:Although XLPE cables are widely used in power transmission and distribution systems, their insulating properties are susceptible to degradation due to thermal aging. In order to clarify the influence law of the thermal aging process on the structural and dielectric properties of XLPE cables, this paper investigates the thermal aging characteristics of XLPE cables by using polarization and depolarization current measurement. Results show that when the XLPE cable is aged at 140 °C, the crystallinity of the insulation layer appears to increase and then decrease. With the increase in aging time, micron-sized microvoids appear on the surface of the XLPE. At the same time, the DC conductivity and 0.1 Hz dielectric loss factor of the insulating layer increase with the aging time. The average DC conductivity increased from 2.26 × 10−16 S/m for new cables to 4.47 × 10−16 S/m after aging for 432 h, while the dielectric loss increased from 0.11% to 0.42%. The polarization characteristics of thermal-aged cables were further analyzed using the extended Debye model. Results indicate that the time constant of the third branch of the model increased significantly with increasing aging time. A correspondence between this parameter and the thermal aging time of the cable was established. Thermal aging can damage the crystalline structure of XLPE, so that the number of interfaces between the crystalline and amorphous regions of the material increases, resulting in structural damages and a decline in the dielectric properties of the cable insulation.

Abstract:Thermal aging is one of the main reasons for the degradation of insulation properties of high voltage cable. Dielectric properties and breakdown strength are important parameters to reflect the insulation performance of the cable insulation materials. In the work, the influence of thermal aging on dielectric and breakdown performance of the cable insulation layer was studied. Firstly, XLPE cable insulation samples were prepared and the thermal aging treatment was carried out. Secondly, the microstructure and molecular structure of XLPE samples under different thermal aging time were analyzed. The dielectric properties and breakdown characteristics of XLPE samples under different thermal aging times were characterized in macro aspect. Finally, the effects of different temperatures on the molecular microstructure of XLPE were studied. The results show that with the extension of thermal aging time, the microstructure of XLPE molecule is destroyed, the macromolecular chain is gradually cleaved, and the carbonyl absorption intensity increases. At power frequency, the breakdown strength decreases from 75.37 kV/mm to 62.18 kV/mm, the relative permittivity increases from 2.44 to 2.51, and the dielectric loss increases from 1.47 × 10−4 to 3.10 × 10−3. The free volume rate of XLPE molecules increases with the increasing temperature, and the mean square displacement gradually increases. The work has good guiding significance for the safe operation and condition assessment of high-voltage cables.
