Abstract:Brittle materials such as glass and ceramics have fragile physical properties that result in poor stability in the machining process. Ultrasonic vibration-assisted polishing (UVAP) can improve the surface quality and machining efficiency of the workpiece, which is beneficial to solve the machining problems of brittle materials. In this paper, a theoretical model is established to predict the material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness, maximum contact radius, and maximum material removal depth of BK7 optical glass for different machining parameters. The new model mainly considers the following aspects: (1) Considering the randomness of the shape, the abrasive particle is modeled as a truncated polyhedron. (2) Due to the randomness of distribution, the abrasive particles are considered to be randomly distributed in the contact area between the polishing tool and the workpiece. (3) Based on the Preston equation, a material removal model is established which considers the micro-contact state of the abrasive particles with the workpiece. Compared with the experimental results of BK7 optical glass, the new model has high accuracy in predicting machining performance. It is meaningful to understand the mechanism of UVAP and improve the machining efficiency.

Abstract:With the rapid progress of science and technology, many applications of hard and brittle materials require advanced and suitable machining-techniques. One technique in particular, ultrasonic vibration-assisted polishing (UVAP), has been studied intensively by researchers worldwide. These studies indicate that UVAP has the capability to improve the surface quality as well as the machining efficiency. However, few studies focus on the deterministic material-removal of UVAP. The difference between generated and theoretical surface profiles determines the surface accuracy. Therefore, this paper focuses on predicting the generated local surface profile and providing a theoretical basis to reduce this error by controlling the polishing parameters. In addition to the axial ultrasonic vibration of polishing tool, ultrasonic atomization was adopted to provide uniformly distributed polishing slurry. To ensure sufficient surface-accuracy, it is necessary to predict the generated surface profile for a fixed spot as a basis research. This means, to enable accurate predictions the following improvements are realized: (i) A novel model for the elastic spherical contact-deformation of the polishing tool is used to calculate both the polishing force and contact radius. It takes into account the nonlinear elasticity of the polishing tool and the lateral extension of the contact area, which makes it more consistent with the actual deformation. (ii) A novel model for the material-removal distribution function for UVAP is proposed, based on the Preston equation. It considers the periodic changes of polishing force and contact radius caused by ultrasonic vibration. (iii) A series of fixed-spot polishing experiments on BK7 glass are carried out to verify the proposed models. The results show that the Preston coefficient is affected by axial ultrasonic amplitude, and large ultrasonic amplitude improves the polishing ability. In addition, the generated local surface profile, the maximum contact radius, as well as the material-removal depth and material-removal rate (MRR) can be predicted well. The new models not only provide a possibility to realize deterministic material removal but also enables in-depth-understanding of UVAP. It also represents a basic theoretical foundation for future, flat or free-form surface-polishing.

Material Removal Characteristics of Spherical-Array-Focused Ultrasonic Abrasive Machining

Abstract:To improve the ultrasonic energy and realize far-field ultrasonic abrasive machining of complex surfaces, a spherical-array-focused ultrasonic abrasive machining system was established. By combining ultrasonic field simulation, detection and a single-factor experiment, the influences of the ultrasonic generator current, abrasive concentration, and particle size on the material removal properties and surface quality evolution of quartz glass were investigated. When the current was less than 0.4 A, the material removal showed plastic removal at the nanoscale. When the current was more than 0.5 A, the cavitation phenomenon formed micron-scale impact removal traces on the workpiece surface. The increase in abrasive concentration increased the impact density and material removal rate, while excessive abrasive concentration increased the impeding effect between abrasive particles and reduced the material removal rate. Moreover, the increase in abrasive particle concentration enhanced heterogeneous cavitation nucleation, promoted the removal of abrasive impact materials under the action of a cavitation jet, and inhibited the removal of direct surface cavitation. The abrasive particle size affects the heterogeneous cavitation nucleation and the acceleration of the cavitation jet on abrasive particles, which affects the material removal rate and surface quality. By controlling the energy of the focused ultrasound and abrasive parameters, the plastic or brittle domain removal of quartz glass can be achieved at the micro- and nanoscales.

Abstract:K9 optical glass is one of the typical components in optical systems. However, because of its poor fracture resistance, it is difficult to polish it with ultra-precision and high-efficiency and without any surface damage simultaneously. The emergence of the obliquely axial ultrasonic vibration-assisted polishing (UVAP) method can solve this problem which encounters in polishing efficiency and shape accuracy. However, due to the unclear material removal profile (MRP) mechanism, obliquely axial UVAP is not widely used in the processing field. This paper introduces the obliquely axial UVAP method in research processes, mainly focusing on the fixed point MRP analysis of the obliquely axial UVAP. Based on Hertz's contact theory, polishing pressure, the length of the semi-long axis (LLA) and the length of the semi-short axis (LSA) of the contact area are calculated under ultrasonic vibration conditions. Meanwhile, the relative linear velocity distribution of the oblique polishing tool in the instantaneous contact area is modeled by mathematical geometry method. A novel model of the MRP distribution for obliquely axial UVAP is proposed following the Preston equation. Subsequently, a series of polishing experiments were carried out to verify this model. The results show that the numerical model has good agreement with the experimental results on MRP, LLA, LSA, material removal depth and material removal rate (MRR). In addition, the material removal capability can be significantly improved by larger ultrasonic amplitude and larger oblique angle. This model not only more clearly elucidates the processing mechanism of obliquely axial UVAP, but also provides theoretical support for the polishing of free-form optical lenses.

Abstract:Microelectrochemical systems (MEMSs) have important applications in electronic information, aerospace, national defense and other fields. The microhemispherical concave die is the manufacturing foundation for the MEMS system. To clarify the forming mechanism of microhemispherical concave dies machined by microultrasonic machining with ceramic whole ball tools, a material removal model was presented. Furthermore, the kinetic energy model of a spherical abrasive under the action of microultrasonic and whole ball ceramic tools was also established. The model of the brittle-plastic transition removal mode is correlated with the kinetic energy of the abrasive model. The surface morphology of miniature molds exhibits significant variations attributed to the altered material removal mode, the removal mechanism was analyzed. The theoretical model is verified by experiments. Experiments were performed with lower and higher viscosity polishing fluids. The surface roughness of the plastic removal area in each group was 96.4 and 60.1 nm. Due to the high viscosity polishing fluid eliminating some of the cavitation phenomena, the overall surface quality is improved; hence, the surface roughness decreases by 37.6% under the same processing conditions. In the low-viscosity experimental group, the surface roughness was 113.61, 302.28 and 367.24 nm, respectively. The experimental verification confirmed that variations in surface morphology occur, even with the same removal mode applied at different locations on the microconcave die. The reasons for the surface roughness variation in different areas of the microconcave die are analyzed and reveal the influence of ultrasonic cavitation on the material removal mode in microultrasonic machining.

Abstract:Neurological disorders of different etiology may cause identical clinical symptoms requiring additional diagnostic procedures for a precise differential diagnosis. Focal epileptic seizures have been shown to cause increased signal intensities in T2 and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI), mimicking other neurological disorders or diseases such as viral encephalitis. In some cases even the combination of neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is not sufficient to obtain the final diagnosis, since epileptic seizures may cause pleocytosis as well. Some epilepsy centers presented cases of focal status epilepticus with severe but reversible MRI changes. These cases indicate that MRI-changes following focal seizures are reversible over a different time window compared to MRI changes associated with other etiologies, such as viral infection. This data further suggest that in cases where focal seizures can not be ruled out, a follow-up MRI scan within a few days following the onset of symptoms significantly improves the precision of the differential diagnosis. Recently new scientific data were reported in this review.

Abstract:A Computational Fluid Dynamics based erosion model is presented to numerically study the influence of ultrasonic vibrating workpiece on the particle impact erosion of glasses involved in the abrasive slurry jet (ASJ) machining process. The Eulerian-Lagrangian method and dynamic meshing technique are used to represent the ASJ flow and the periodical movement of the workpiece, while the particle rebound model and semi-empirical erosion model for glasses by considering the brittle-ductile transition are employed to simulate the impact erosion process, respectively. It has been found from simulation that the combined effects of stagnation zone and brittle-ductile transition that results in W-shaped cross-sectional profiles in ASJ micro-machining of holes in experiment. However, in the stagnation zone with an ultrasonic vibrating workpiece a periodical variation of static pressure is observed and its influence on the particle trajectory near the stagnation has been analysed. It is found that the relative movement between the ASJ flow and workpiece rather than the relative location of the workpiece far away from the nozzle exit results in the dynamic impacts of particles on the target surface which not only increase the average erosion rate but also contribute to the uniform distribution of the erosion area on the target surface. Further, the erosion induced by the viscous flow around the ASJ directly impact zone is found to be enhanced due to the more multiple impacts by the particles following the viscous flow that is affected by the ultrasonic vibrating workpiece, which would enlarge the ASJ machining area as the impact event progresses. These findings from the simulation are significant for the improvement of the ASJ micro-machining efficiency and quality.

Abstract:Abstract : Primates injected with one 10 mg/kg dose of adenine over 10 min or the same dose daily for 5 days had no changes in renal function or structure. Single doses of 25 or 50 mg/kg produced decreases in renal plasma flow and/or glomerular filtration which appeared to be dose related. No crystalline deposition or pathological changes were observed in the renal tissue at any dose level. Transient crystalluria was observed in some animals at the time of urinary adenine and 2,8-dioxyadenine excretion, but these crystals were not definitely identified. Adenine and 2,8-dioxyadenine were present in the urine at all dose levels during the first day, but were absent 24 hr after injection. (Author)

Abstract:The machining of ultra-smooth surfaces has always been a significant research topic in the fields of optics fabrication. In this paper, disc hydrodynamic polishing (DHDP) process with a novel polishing tool is proposed to produce ultra-smooth surface with sub-nanometer scale surface roughness (Ra < 1 nm) and undamaged sub-surface. In order to explore the principle of the ultra-smooth surface generation in the DHDP process, the material removal mechanism and evolution mechanism of micro-morphology of polished surface were firstly studied by preliminary experiments. Then, theoretical material removal and surface simulation modeling are established on the basis of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), fractal theory for rough surfaces, particle contact mechanics, and erosion mechanisms in DHDP. Finally, a series of polishing experiments was performed on fused quartz glass to verify the theoretical model, which could be applied to predict surface topography and guide the ultra-smooth surface polishing process. The results indicated that the peak-to-valley (PV) value and waviness of the workpiece were reduced in the nanometer level under the erosion action of abrasive particles. Moreover, the surface roughness Ra and PV values decreased with the increase of rotation speed and polishing time. The analysis of power spectral density (PSD) results illustrates that high rotation speed of tool and polishing time (less than 60 min) can reduce the high-spatial-frequency errors distinctly, and the longer polishing time (above 60 min) can also influence on the mid-spatial-frequency errors.

Abstract:The surface impact interactions of hydroxy radicals and nanoparticles in a colloid system, involving chemisorption reactions which break structural bonds and alter the surface chemistry and structure, offer promising applications for producing an ultra-smooth surface. A nanoparticle colloid jet machining system has been developed in which the reversible polymerization and decomposition reaction is utilized to remove surface atoms. The nanoparticles before and after polishing were measured by using diffuse reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and the infrared bands were analyzed. The study revealed the mechanism and essence of the interface reaction between the SiO2 nanoparticle colloid and K9 glass on the molecular level, and could provide the theoretical basis for the usage of nanoparticle colloid jet machining for figuring of an ultra-smooth surface in modern optical machining. We employed the system to polish a K9 substrate; some recent experiments prove that it is possible to obtain removal rates of the 1 nm level per minute for glass surfaces with appropriate process parameters. The microroughness of the work surface processed by nanoparticle colloid jet machining is under 1 nm rms.

Abstract:The dynamic indentation fracture mechanics and particles impacting erosion theory were applied to the research of hydrodynamic suspension ultra-smooth machining. The theoretic model of nanoscale abrasive particles impacting workpiece surface micro asperities was established. Subsequently, the experiments of machining for aluminum alloy and K9 glass were carried out respectively. The results show that the hydrodynamic suspension machining is the process of nanoscale impacting the surface asperities to realize the micro removal, and the nanaoscale ultra-smooth surface without damage can be obtained during hydrodynamic suspension machining for K9 glass.

Abstract:Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), which represent an emerging popular class of alloys, are regarded as difficult -to-cut materials. Ultrasonic vibration-assisted cutting (UVAC) has been reported as an effective method to improve the machinability of such materials. In UVAC, it is widely accepted that, the larger the ultrasonic amplitude, the better the processing outcome, i.e., lower cutting force, lower surface roughness and longer tool life. However, this study demonstrates that the cutting performance of BMGs can be enhanced only if the ultrasonic amplitude is within a carefully-determined window. Due to the high hardness, high elastic limit, and inhomogeneous deformation of BMGs, an excessive ultrasonic amplitude would violate the cutting performance of UVAC. On the one hand, the increase of ultrasonic amplitude can increase the cutting-in speed and actual cutting distance of the tool, which, due to the extreme hardness and elastic limit of BMGs, might lead to severe tool wear in the form of abrupt fracture and rapid flank abrasion, respectively. On the other hand, the increase of ultrasonic amplitude can increase the instantaneous maximum cutting speed of the tool, which, due to the inhomogeneous deformation of BMGs, might lead to local melting of the BMG. When the instantaneous cutting speed reaches a critical value, local material melting takes place on the newly generated surface, which will induce the deterioration of surface quality due to the formation of dimples and periodic micro-pools during UVAC. Based on the theoretical and experimental results, the process window of UVAC of BMGs has been identified. A process optimization strategy is proposed by synergistically considering the surface quality, tool life, and machining efficiency. Additional confirmatory experiments reveal that UVAC can effectively reduce the cutting force and surface roughness of BMGs if the process parameters are well-matched within the identified window.(c) 2022 CIRP.
Experimental Study On Ultrasonic Face Machining Of Glass

Abstract:Reported investigations on ultrasonic machining mainly focused on the small hole drilling of ceramics, seldom concerned of large scale face machining. It's mainly responsible for the absence of the high power ultrasonic machining tools. In the present work, with the development of the high power ultrasonic machine tool, three different kinds of ultrasonic face machining, namely, Non-rotary Ultrasonic Machining with Free Abrasives (NRUSM), rotary ultrasonic machining with free abrasives (RUSM) and rotary ultrasonic machining with diamond tool (RUM), were designed and comparatively conducted on glass material. Two systems were set up to in-process monitor the changes of static force and frequency respectively. The effects of static force, spindle speed and amplitude of ultrasonic vibration on material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness were analyzed. The surfaces of workpiece were also observed by a digital video microscope system. Finally, the differences of machining mechanism among the three kinds of the ultrasonic machining were emphasized. Experimental results indicates that rotary ultrasonic machining is an effective method for face milling of glass, which will has a big influence to promote the high efficiency processing of hard and brittle materials, and also its' utilization.

Abstract:High-efficiency precision grinding can shorten the machining cycle of aspheric optical elements by a factor of 2–10. To achieve this objective, ultrasonic vibration (UV)–assisted grinding (UVG) has been increasingly applied to manufacture aspheric optics. However, the mechanisms of material removal and surface formation in UV-assisted aspheric grinding of glass ceramics have rarely been studied. Herein, rotary UV-assisted vertical grinding (RUVG) was used to explore the machining mechanism of coaxial curved surfaces. First, RUV-assisted scratch experiments were conducted on aspheric surface of glass ceramics, which exhibited multiple benefits over conventional scratching. These include a reduction in the scratch force by 37.83–44.55% for tangential component and 3.87–28.15% for normal component, an increase in plastic removal length by 43.75%, and an increase in material removal rate by almost a factor of 2. Moreover, grinding marks on the aspheric surface in RUVG were accurately simulated and optimized by adjusting grinding parameters. RUVG experiments were performed to verify the accuracy of grinding texture simulations and investigate the UV effect. The results demonstrate that UV can improve the surface quality of aspheric grinding when compared with conventional vertical grinding. In particular, the total height of the profile of form accuracy and its root mean square were significantly improved by a factor of 3.38–4.54 and 7.15–10.82, respectively, and the surface roughness reduced by 10.03–12.10%. This study provides deeper insight into material removal and surface generation mechanisms for RUVG of aspheric surfaces, and it is thus envisaged that these results will be useful in engineering applications.

Abstract:The mechanism of material removal under ultrasonic vibration has not been elucidated, which is not conducive to its promotion and application in the field of machining. Previous research on the mechanism of material removal was mainly conducted through grinding experiments with a single abrasive particle. The interference effect of abrasive particles on the surface has been ignored, and it is obvious that this research method has shortcomings. In this study, tangential ultrasonic vibration assisted grinding (TUVAG) and radial ultrasonic vibration assisted grinding (RUVAG) experiments were conducted on multiple abrasive particles to reveal basic principles of material removal and surface formation. Three tools with multiple abrasive particle arrangements were specially designed. The debris and groove morphology were analyzed and compared with conventional grinding (CG). This research work explains the surface formation mechanism under different forms of ultrasonic vibration and has reference significance for efficient and high-quality machining of difficult-to-cut materials.

Abstract:Fused silica glass is utilized extensively in various optical components owing to its excellent optical properties, but its high hardness and brittleness make it difficult to process with high surface accuracy and low subsurface damage. To solve this problem, a series of experiments is carried out to explore the mechanism of material removal during dual-rotation polishing of fused quartz glass. A predictive model is proposed to predict the material removal rate and the microtopography of polished surface. This model considers fundamental physics of the dual-rotation polishing process, for instance, the surface micro-topography and the pressure distribution of the polishing pad, the brittle–ductile material removal mechanism, the planetary motion during the polishing, and the influence of chemical reactions. The reliability and accuracy of the model are quantitatively evaluated through practical experiments. It is turned out that the simulated results reasonably agree with the experimental data. In addition, simulation experiments show that a Gaussian removal function with a strong central peak can be obtained when the eccentricity is 0.9 and the rotating speed ratio is between −10 and −1. This indicates that the theoretical model can be successfully applied to the prediction and optimization of polishing processes.

Abstract:With the aim of solving problems such as exit breakage and surface microcracks during microcrystalline glass machining, an ellipsoidal erosion model is established by analyzing the motion trajectory and characteristics of single diamond grit in ultrasonic vibration-assisted grinding (UVAG), and the material removal volume of single diamond grit particles is obtained. A simulation model of UVAG of microcrystalline glass is established by the finite element method. The effect of process parameters such as rotational speed, grinding depth, feed rate on grinding force and workpiece edge stress has been investigated. The experiment of UVAG for microcrystalline glass is performed on a five-axis CNC machine with the same process parameters, and the surface morphology, surface roughness, and exit breakage sizes of microcrystalline glass are observed. The results show that with the increase in grinding depth, the average grinding force between the tool and the workpiece increases, and the proportion of material removal in a brittle fracture increases. As the rotational speed increases, the grinding force between the tool and the workpiece gradually decreases and results in an improvement in the surface quality of the workpiece. As the feed rate increases, the surface roughness increases by 16.76%, the width of the edge breakage increases by 109.19%, and the thickness of the edge breakage increases by 104.49%.

Abstract:Chemical mechanical polishing is a hybrid polishing technique having different applications in the semiconductor industry, biomedical and optical instrumentation, and defense equipment. The control and accuracy highly depend on the operator's skill due to limited knowledge of material removal behavior. This article attempts to fill this gap through an experimental investigation of friction coefficient and material removal rate as functions of abrasive particle size, normal load, relative velocity, and polishing time during BK7 optical glass polishing. In this article, Taguchi L18 mixed levels full factorial design was used to perform the experiments. Also, a temporal model for material removal rate is developed to study and investigate the mechanism of material removal. The results show the load per particle varies between 0.18 × 10 –6 and 4.1 × 10 –6 N, which led to the conclusion that material, are removed plastically from the workpiece surface and mechanical actions are dominant over chemical actions in material removal. The values of friction coefficient (μ ~ 0.1) and 3D profilometer images also support this statement. The errors between predicted and experimental results are well within 8% and 12% for friction coefficient and material removal rate, respectively. This study is an important step toward the deterministic optical polishing process, leading to better control of material removal during the polishing of precision optical components.

Abstract:With the development of science and technology, many precision fields have higher requirements for the machining quality and precision of hard and brittle materials. Brittle materials such as glass and ceramics have fragile physical properties, resulting in poor stability during machining. Ultrasonic vibration-assisted polishing (UVAP) is suitable for machining various brittle materials and can well solve the machining problems caused by the characteristics of brittle materials. In order to ensure the machining quality, a polishing force model of K9 optical glass for different processing parameters is established in this paper. The new model mainly considers the following aspects: (1) Considering the randomness of shape, the truncated polyhedral model is used to model the abrasive particles. (2) Based on the fractal theory and mathematical statistics, a microscopic morphology model of the polishing tool is established. (3) Based on the N–S equation, a polishing force model considering the micro-contact states of the polishing tool, abrasive particles, and workpiece is established. By comparing with the experimental results, the new model has high accuracy in predicting the polishing force. The new model and results lay the foundation for the subsequent research of brittle materials.
