Abstract:To surpass the current level of mechanical properties exhibited by CoCrNi medium-entropy alloys (MEA), (CoCrNi) 100−x (WC) x (x = 0, 2, 4 and 6 for molar ratio) MEA samples were prepared using powder metallurgy with atomized powder as the raw material, and the influence of WC content on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the sintered MEAs was investigated. As the WC content increased, the phase structure of the sintered MEAs changed from a single FCC phase to an FCC+Cr 23 C 6 phase, while the grain size of the matrix decreased. Consequently, the strength of the alloy exhibited significant improvement. For instance, the tensile yield and fracture strengths of (CoCrNi) 98 (WC) 2 were measured at 574 and 971 MPa, respectively, while maintaining a plasticity of approximately 41.6%. Furthermore, the addition of WC led to a considerable increase in the hardness for (CoCrNi) 94 (WC) 6 , reaching 314.7 HV, which was nearly 50% higher than that of the CoCrNi matrix. The increased hardness proved beneficial in enhancing the material's wear resistance, which first increased and then decreased. The wear mechanisms primarily involved abrasive and oxidation wears. The observed increase in yield strength can be attributed to the combined effects of multiple strengthening mechanisms. The individual contributions of these mechanisms were quantitatively evaluated and compared to the actual values, demonstrating consistency with the calculated results. Notably, solid-solution strengthening emerged as the principle strengthening mechanism.

Abstract:In this work the effects of Al and Ti element addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of CoCrNi medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) has been investigated. A novel (AlTi) 2x (CoCrNi) 100–2x MEAs was fabricated by using powder plasma arc additive manufacturing technique. The influences of Al and Ti elements on the microstructure, mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms were analyzed by XRD, EBSD and TEM. The (AlTi) 2x (CoCrNi) 100–2x MEAs exhibited columnar crystal structure, but the average grain size and texture decreased continuously with increasing values of x. Moreover, tensile test results showed that (CoCrNi) 90 Al 5 Ti 5 alloy possessed strength-ductility balance (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of 664 MPa, 897 MPa and 19.3 %, respectively). The analysis on the strengthening mechanism showed that the solid solution strengthening effect was more dominant with increasing of the x in all alloys. (CoCrNi) 94 Al 3 Ti 3 and (CoCrNi) 90 Al 5 Ti 5 have similar average grain sizes, wherein the difference in mechanical properties between both the alloys can be mainly attributed to the formation of fine grain sizes. (CoCrNi) 90 Al 5 Ti 5 has a small amount of dislocations, solid solution strengthening and grain boundary strengthening are the main sources of the excellent properties.

Abstract:In CoCrNiCuMo high-entropy alloys (HEAs), the Cu is highly susceptible to segregation, resulting in significant deterioration of plasticity, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. In this study, Al with atomic ratios of 0, 0.26, 0.56, and 1.00 are added to CoCrNiCuMo to regulate the segregation. The microstructures and composition of CoCrNiCuMoAlx alloys are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis. The phase composition of the alloys is analyzed by x-ray diffractometry (XRD). The microhardness, compression, friction and wear resistance, and corrosion resistance are also tested to investigate the effect of the Al on the microstructure and properties of the CoCrNiCuMo high-entropy alloys. The results show that, with the addition of Al, the Cu in HEA no longer appears as spheres for large-scale deviations, but form Al-Ni-Cu-rich phases with the Al and Ni in the BCC structure uniformly distributed at the grain boundaries, while the grain size is refined to a certain extent. As the amount of Al addition increases, the values of hardness and compressive strength increase. The CoCrNiCuMoAl1.0 alloy possesses the highest hardness and strength of 621.5 HV5 and 1775 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the wear resistance and corrosion resistance are gradually improved with the increase of Al.

Abstract:The effect of Al addition on the microstructural evolution, hardness, and deformation behavior of a nanostructured CrCoNi medium entropy alloy prepared by co‐sputtering is studied in detail. With an increase in the Al content, the hardness of the alloy first increased (reaching 13.8 GPa) and then decreased (10.7 GPa), while the microstructure changed from nanocrystalline to a nanocrystalline/amorphous dual‐phase structure. During plastic deformation, the appropriate amounts of the amorphous region and nanocrystalline mixed structure prevent shearing and grain rotation. Moreover, the amorphous shell also acts as a dislocation source that emitted and absorbed dislocations constantly and prevented grain boundary sliding to some extent. This work provides a novel approach to improve the mechanical properties of nanostructured medium entropy alloy films by controlling their composition and microstructure. The effect of Al addition on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of nanostructured CrCoNi medium entropy alloy prepared by co‐sputtering was studied in detail. After the addition of Al, the microstructure changed from nanocrystalline to a nanocrystalline/amorphous dual‐phase structure. The mechanical properties of the alloys could be effectively tailored by controlling their microstructure.

Abstract:The effect of Cr on the phase composition,solidification structure and microhardness of Al-Ni alloys was studied by OM,SEM,EDS,XRD and hardness test.The results show that the phase composition of AlNi2.5Crxalloys mainly includes α(Al)phase and Al-Al3Ni eutectic.Solidifica-tion structures of the alloys are obviously refined by adding Cr.The average grain sizes ofα(Al)phase and Al3Ni phase reach the minimum when Cr content is 0.2 at.% and 0.3 at.% respectively.With the increase of Cr content,the microhardness of the alloys rises.When Cr content is 0.5 at.%,the al-loy has the maximal microhardness of 5 1.2 HV.This is mainly due to the combined action of solid so-lution strengthening,fine-grain strengthening and lattice distortion.

Abstract:The effects of Al on microstructure and mechanical properties of AlxCoCrFeNi (x=0.1, 0.75 and 1.5) high-entropy alloys were systematically studied by using various characterization methods. It was found that the crystalline structure of AlxCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy varies markedly with Al content, which changes from the initial single face-centered cubic (fcc) to fcc plus ordered body-centered cubic (bcc) structure (B2) and then to a duplex bcc structure (A2+B2) as the Al content is increased. The chemical composition analysis reveals that Al primarily partitions to B2 phase, suggesting Al is a stabilizer of B2 structure. With increasing Al content, more Ni and Al partition to the B2 phase due to the very negative mixing enthalpy of Ni and Al, and another phase enriched in Cr and Fe transforms from fcc to disordered bcc. Nano indentation measurements show that the hardness of AlxCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy increases with Al content, accompanied by the decrease of ductility. The stability of single-phase solid solution in AlxCoCrFeNi HEAs is deduced from various criteria. Combined with the experiment results of other similar HEA systems, such as AlxCoCrFeNiCu, the effects of Al addition on the microstructure of AlxCoCrFeNi HEAs are discussed based on the Gibbs free energy of all competing phases and the fundamental properties of constituent elements. The aim of current study is to provide experimental evidence to establish a correlation between the microstructure and mechanical properties to search for high-entropy alloys with higher performances.

Abstract:In this study, novel CrCoNi-Al2O3 composites with 2.5-7.5 wt% Al2O3 were prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) plus rapid spark plasma sintering (SPS) method, and their microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that the Al2O3 nanoparticles are distributed homogeneously in the CrCoNi medium entropy alloy (MEA) matrix with ultra-fine grain size (<= 0.37 mu m). Moreover, the composites have clean, regular and well bonded matrix/alpha-Al2O3 interfaces. Interestingly, a large number of nano twin bundles, large-scale 9R phase and geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) were formed near the matrix/alpha-Al2O3 interfaces. The Vickers hardnesses of the 2.5-7.5 wt% Al2O3 composites reach 521-603 HV0.3, and the compressive yield strength is 1877-2359 MPa with fracture strains of 9.3-31.6%. The yield strength of the composites is by 65.4-107.8% higher than that of the pure CrCoNi matrix, meanwhile they still have considerable ductility, which indicates composite strengthening is a feasible method to improve mechanical properties of high/medium entropy alloys. The composite includes multiply strengthening mechanisms, namely grain refinement strengthening, twin strengthening, Orowan strengthening and dislocation strengthening. The contributions of various strengthening mechanisms were quantitatively analyzed, which were well consistent with the experimental values.
Preparation and properties of FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx high-entropy alloy

Abstract:The FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx(x=0,0.1,0.2,0.5 mol) high-entropy alloy were prepared by high-frequency induction melting under vacuum condition,and the ingots were processed by solid-solution treatment.According to X-ray diffraction results,the FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx high-entropy alloy has simple fcc structure.Compressive properties of the alloy were tested by WAW-3100 testing machine.It is found that the FeNiMnCuC0.2 high-entropy alloy has high compressive strength,which reaches 5 218 MPa.With the increase of Al content,the compressive strength of the alloy decreases,When x=0.1 mol,a good combination of compressive strength and plastic strain is obtained,which are 4 037 MPa and more than 75%,respectively.When the content of Al reaches x=0.5 mol,the alloy exhibits brittle fracture.The results of microstructure and EDS show that the addition of a small amount of Al(x=0.1,0.2 mol) can make FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx grains finer;while x=0.5 mol,primary dendrite grains grow.EDS finds dendritic segregation area to be Fe,Ni rich,while interdendritic segregation area is found to be Mn,Cu rich.The distribution of C,Al is almost identical.

Abstract:The CoCrFeNiAl high-entropy alloy, with varying Al compositions, was utilized as the bonding phase in this study to fabricate WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x (where x represents the mole ratio of Al element, ranging from 0 to 1) hard alloys using the Spark Plasma Sintering method. The investigation focused on elucidating the influence mechanism of microstructure and properties of CoCrFeNiAl x high-entropy alloys on the mechanical properties of WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys. Isothermal oxidation testing was subsequently conducted to examine the impact of Al content on the high-temperature oxidation resistance of WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys. Finally, a comparison was made between the mechanical properties and high temperature oxidation resistance of WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys and conventional WC-6Co cemented carbide. The findings suggest that as the Al content increases, the CoCrFeNiAl x high-entropy alloy undergoes a transition from a single Face-Centered Cubic (FCC) phase to a combination of FCC and Body Centered Cubic (BCC) phases, ultimately transforming into a BCC phase. This evolution results in a gradual enhancement in hardness. The mechanical properties of WC-10CoCrFeNi hard alloy exhibit exceptional characteristics when the Al content is eliminated, with hardness, fracture toughness, and bending strength reaching 1702 MPa, 13.0 MPa·m 1/2 , and 1378 MPa respectively. As the Al content increases in WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys, there is a corresponding increase in hardness while fracture toughness and bending strength gradually decrease. Furthermore, an enhancement in high temperature oxidation resistance is observed. Finally, in comparison to the conventional WC-6Co hard alloy, the mechanical properties of WC-10CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys exhibit similarity while demonstrating a significant enhancement in oxidation resistance.

Abstract:The microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of Fe50Mn25Cr15Ni10-xCox medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) with varying Co and Ni contents were investigated in this study. With increasing Co concentration, the microstructure of the MEAs changes from FCC single phase to FCC + HCP dual-phase. At room temperature, a rise in Co concentration increases the strength and ductility of the MEAs, while at liquid nitrogen temperature, the ductility, and the product of tensile strength and ductility of the MEAs decrease significantly. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance of the MEAs decreases significantly with increasing Co content. This work provides a research object for the further development of low-cost MEAs with excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:A five-component AlxCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) system with finely-divided Al contents (x in molar ratio, x = 0-2.0) was prepared by vacuum arc melting and casting method. The effects of Al addition on the crystal structure, microstructure and mechanical property were investigated using Xray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Vickers hardness tester. The as-cast AlxCoCrFeNi alloys can possess face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC) or mixed crystal structure, depending on the aluminum content. The increase of aluminum content results in the formation of BCC structure which is a dominant factor of hardening. All the BCC phases in the as-cast alloys have a nano-scale two-phase structure formed by spinodal decomposition mechanism. The Al0.9CoCrFeNi alloy exhibits a finest spinodal structure consisting of alternating interconnected two-phase microstructure which explains its maximum hardness of Hv 527 among the alloys. The chemical composition analysis of FCC and BCC crystal structures, their lattice constants, overall hardness demonstrate that the formation of a single FCC solid solution should have Al addition <11 at.% and the formation of a single BCC solid solution requires Al addition at least 18.4 at.% in the AlxCoCrFeNi system. Abstract:High-entropy alloys Al x CoCrFeMo 0.5 Ni with varied Al contents ( x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0) have been designed based on the Al x CoCrCuFeNi system to improve mechanical properties for room and elevated temperatures. They have been investigated for microstructure and mechanical properties. As the aluminum content increases, the as-cast structure evolves from face-centered cubic dendrite + minor σ -phase interdendrite at x = 0 to B2 dendrite with body-centered cubic (bcc) precipitates + bcc interdendrite with B2 precipitates at x = 2.0. This confirms the strong bcc-forming tendency of Al. The room-temperature Vickers hardness starts from the lowest, HV 220, at x = 0, attains to the maximum, HV 720, at x = 1.0, and then decreases to HV 615 at x = 2.0. Compared with the base alloy system, the current alloy system has a superior combination of hardness and fracture toughness. In addition, Al x CoCrFeMo 0.5 Ni alloys except x = 0 display a higher hot hardness level than those of Ni-based superalloys, including In 718 and In 718 H, up to 1273 K and show great potential in high-temperature applications.
Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of CoCrFeNiAl0.3 high entropy alloy produced by ball milling in combination with thermomechanical consolidation

Abstract:The CoCrFeNiAl0.3 high entropy alloy samples were produced by different ball milling strategies including mechanical mixing and mechanical alloying in combination with spark plasma sintering and hot extrusion. The microstructure evolution and phase formation were investigated in correlation to tensile mechanical properties. It was found that a mixture of FCC and BCC structured matrix, as well as intermediate multiphases (e.g., Cr-rich σ phase, B2-NiAl, L12-Ni3Al) was formed because of incomplete alloying during consolidation of the mechanically mixed powders. After homogenization treatment at 1423 K, a complete alloyed FCC matrix was formed due to the transformation from BCC to FCC as well as the dissolution of the intermediate phases. For the mechanically alloyed powders, a similar single phase FCC matrix with an averaged grain size of 784 nm was obtained when subjected to thermomechanical consolidation. The microstructure exhibited a good thermal stability (grain size: 789 nm) even after homogenization treatment, which was likely attributed to the pinning effects of the dispersed Al2O3 nanoparticles deriving from the in-situ reaction of Al and O during powder consolidation. The Al2O3 nanoparticles played a dominate role in tailoring the microstructure and then enhanced the mechanical properties by Orowan mechanism, leading to a good combination of yield strength and elongation to fracture of 950 MPa and 17.3%, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract A series of FeCrNiMnAl x (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0 in molar ratio) high entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared by the vacuum arc melting method. The effects of Al content on the microstructure, mechanical and wear properties were investigated. For FeCrNiMn alloy, the microstructure was main homogeneous structure with face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, whilst FeCrNiMnAl 0.3 produced a dendritic microstructure consisting of a mixture of FCC + BCC + B2 phases, and the mixture BCC + B2 dendritic interdendritic microstructure appeared when the molar ratio of Al is beyond 0.5. The hardness and yield stress of the HEAs are effectively improved with the increased Al amount but the ductility is lowered. In this case, FeCrNiMnAl alloy showed decreased yield stress due to the deteriorated ductility. Moreover, the friction coefficient decreases, and the wear resistance improved with the increased aluminum content. FeCrNiMnAl 0.8 HEAs have the best wear resistance due to the advantages of achieving a balance of strength and ductility.

Abstract:In this work, a series of Al-doped Al x Ni 0.6 CoFe 1.4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) were prepared to investigate the mechanical and wear performances. The results reveal that the phase structure of Al x Ni 0.6 CoFe 1.4 MEAs is composed of disordered body-centered cubic (BCC) phase with a minor amount of ordered BCC (B2) phase after addition of Al. The mechanical tests show that the micro-hardness, tensile strength and fracture elongation initially increase and then decrease with increasing Al content. Specifically, the Al0.2 alloy exhibits the optimum mechanical properties, with the highest micro-hardness of 732.7 ± 16.1 Hv, the maximum tensile strength of 1103.6 ± 20.5 MPa and the maximum fracture elongation of 13.6 ± 0.9%, respectively. In addition, all Al-doped Al x Ni 0.6 CoFe 1.4 alloys exhibit a higher wear resistance compared with the Al-free Ni 0.6 CoFe 1.4 alloy at dry sliding. The underlying mechanisms for the Al effect on the mechnical properties and wear resistance of Al x Ni 0.6 CoFe 1.4 MEAs were uncovered.

As Al content increased, the structure of alloy transformed from a face-centered cubic (FCC)-based crystal structure (including the ordered L12 phase) into a duplex FCC coexisting with body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. Besides, eutectic precipitations appeared when Al content in the alloy exceeded 12.5%. The increase in hardness of the alloy was mostly attributed to the solid solution hardening and precipitation hardening.

Abstract:The AlxCoCrFeNi2.1 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.7, 1.0, 1.3) multi-component high-entropy alloy (HEA) was synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) and Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), The impact of the percentage of Al on crystal structure transition, microstructure evolution and mechanical properties were studied. Crystal structure was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results show that with the increasing of Al content, the crystal structure of the alloys gradually transformed from a nanocrystalline phase of FCC to a mix of FCC and BCC nanocrystalline. The hardness was found to increase steadily from 433 HV to 565 HV due to the increase in fraction of BCC nanocrystalline phase. Thus, the compressive fracture strength increased from 1702 MPa to 2333 MPa; in contrast, the fracture strain decreased from 39.8% to 15.6%.

Abstract:CoCrFeNiAl x ( x = 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2, molar ratio) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared by directional solidification at the withdrawal rate of 70 μm/s and were simply referred to as Al 0.3 , Al 0.6 , Al 0.9 and Al 1.2 alloy, respectively. The effects of Al content on microstructure evolution, component segregation and compressive property of these alloys were investigated. The study revealed that increasing Al content induced a transition from face-centered cubic (FCC) to body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure. Simultaneously, the microstructure transformed from coarse irregular dendrites to equiaxed dendrites and the morphology of the solid-liquid interface changed from cellular dendrites to dendrites. Specifically, the Al 0.3 alloy exhibited the single FCC phase, while the Al 0.6 alloy consisted of dendritic FCC of phase CoCrFe-enriched and inter-dendritic BCC phase of AlNi-enriched. The Al 0.9 and Al 1.2 alloys showed AlNi-enriched precipitate B2 phase and CoCrFe-enriched matrix FCC phase. As the Al content increased, the CoCrFeNiAl x HEAs ultimate compressive strength initially increased and then decreased. The Al 0.9 alloy achieved the supreme ultimate compressive strength of 2265.17 MPa, attributed to crystal structure transformation and solid solution strengthening. Additionally, the compressive strain consistently decreased with increasing Al content, reaching the minimum of 23.46% for the Al 1.2 alloy.

Abstract:A new multi-principal Co-Cr-Cu-Fe-Ni-Mo-Al high entropy alloy with good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance was prepared. For the phenomenon of Cu segregation, we report a strategy to tailor the existing form of Cu in HEA from undesired large-scale segregation to uniform distribution in the solid solution phase. The effects of the Al content on the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of CoCrCuFeNiMoAlx (x = 0, 0.32, 0.67, and 1.0) alloys were studied. The results show that when Al content is low, Cu segregation phenomenon is serious, and the microstructure of the alloy is FCC structure and a little BCC structure. With the increase of Al content, the microstructure is gradually transformed into BCC structure, and the Cu segregation phenomenon is improved. In addition, with the increase of Al content, the mechanical properties of the alloy are improved to some extent. According to the experimental results, the hardness increased by 30.4 %and the compressive strength increases by 22.9 %. Moreover, an increasing Al content had a positive influence on the corrosion resistance of the alloy, increased corrosion potential of the alloy and reduced corrosion current.
