Abstract:In this study, Al0.6CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy particle-reinforced 5052Al-based composites with good surface morphology and different diffusion layer thicknesses were successfully prepared using hot-press sintering and annealing, which were subsequently characterized by XRD, SEM, EBSD, micropillar compression, and nanoindentation. The EBSD tests indicate that the Al0.6CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy has a dual-phase crystal structure with the presence of both FCC and BCC phases inside, and the internal grain size is significantly higher than that of the matrix. Subsequently, the mechanical property mapping images of the particle-diffusion layer-matrix region on the composite surface were obtained using the NanoBlitz 3D method in the nanoindentation experiments. And based on the particle and matrix mechanical property parameters obtained by nanoindentation experiments, they were fitted into different mathematical models to obtain the hardness and elastic modulus of the composite. As a result, the correlation was found to be linear, and the slope of the fitted straight line increased gradually with the prolongation of the annealing time. In conclusion, it is evident from the comparison of the results of mathematical model fitting of mechanical property parameters with the results of macroscopic mechanical property tests that the P. G. Klemens model exhibits an excellent fitting effect on the macro-microscopic mechanical properties of particle-reinforced aluminum matrix composites compared with other models such as the rule of mixtures.
Preparation and properties of FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx high-entropy alloy

Abstract:The FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx(x=0,0.1,0.2,0.5 mol) high-entropy alloy were prepared by high-frequency induction melting under vacuum condition,and the ingots were processed by solid-solution treatment.According to X-ray diffraction results,the FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx high-entropy alloy has simple fcc structure.Compressive properties of the alloy were tested by WAW-3100 testing machine.It is found that the FeNiMnCuC0.2 high-entropy alloy has high compressive strength,which reaches 5 218 MPa.With the increase of Al content,the compressive strength of the alloy decreases,When x=0.1 mol,a good combination of compressive strength and plastic strain is obtained,which are 4 037 MPa and more than 75%,respectively.When the content of Al reaches x=0.5 mol,the alloy exhibits brittle fracture.The results of microstructure and EDS show that the addition of a small amount of Al(x=0.1,0.2 mol) can make FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx grains finer;while x=0.5 mol,primary dendrite grains grow.EDS finds dendritic segregation area to be Fe,Ni rich,while interdendritic segregation area is found to be Mn,Cu rich.The distribution of C,Al is almost identical.
Microstructural Evolution and Elevated-Temperature Strengthening Mechanism of Co-free FeCrMnNiV0.2Alx High-Entropy Alloys During Annealing

Abstract:We reported the influence of Al contents on microstructure and elevated -temperature mechanical properties in Co -free FeCrMnNiV0.2Alx (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.35 and 0.4) high -entropy alloys (HEAs), which were prepared by conventional cast and annealing methods. The results indicated that FCC + BCC structure was transformed into BCC/B2 structure with an increase of Al in as -cast HEAs, leading to an increase in Vickers hardness. After annealing, the formation of network spinodal decomposition structure in FCC regions led to an increase of hardness and strength with a sacrifice in ductility. Noted that the enhanced yield strength at elevated temperature of the cost-effective FeCrMnNiV0.2Al0.2 HEA can be ascribed to the stable strengthening phases, including sub-micron/nanoscale B2 phase in BCC regions and network FCC/L12 structure in FCC regions. The cracks prefer to propagate through either FCC regions or BCC regions with more secondary cracks.
Effect of Al content in CoCrFeNiAl x HEA on mechanical properties and high temperature oxidation resistance of WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloy

Abstract:The CoCrFeNiAl high-entropy alloy, with varying Al compositions, was utilized as the bonding phase in this study to fabricate WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x (where x represents the mole ratio of Al element, ranging from 0 to 1) hard alloys using the Spark Plasma Sintering method. The investigation focused on elucidating the influence mechanism of microstructure and properties of CoCrFeNiAl x high-entropy alloys on the mechanical properties of WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys. Isothermal oxidation testing was subsequently conducted to examine the impact of Al content on the high-temperature oxidation resistance of WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys. Finally, a comparison was made between the mechanical properties and high temperature oxidation resistance of WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys and conventional WC-6Co cemented carbide. The findings suggest that as the Al content increases, the CoCrFeNiAl x high-entropy alloy undergoes a transition from a single Face-Centered Cubic (FCC) phase to a combination of FCC and Body Centered Cubic (BCC) phases, ultimately transforming into a BCC phase. This evolution results in a gradual enhancement in hardness. The mechanical properties of WC-10CoCrFeNi hard alloy exhibit exceptional characteristics when the Al content is eliminated, with hardness, fracture toughness, and bending strength reaching 1702 MPa, 13.0 MPa·m 1/2 , and 1378 MPa respectively. As the Al content increases in WC-10%CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys, there is a corresponding increase in hardness while fracture toughness and bending strength gradually decrease. Furthermore, an enhancement in high temperature oxidation resistance is observed. Finally, in comparison to the conventional WC-6Co hard alloy, the mechanical properties of WC-10CoCrFeNiAl x hard alloys exhibit similarity while demonstrating a significant enhancement in oxidation resistance.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys Al x CoCrFeMo 0.5 Ni with varied Al contents ( x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0) have been designed based on the Al x CoCrCuFeNi system to improve mechanical properties for room and elevated temperatures. They have been investigated for microstructure and mechanical properties. As the aluminum content increases, the as-cast structure evolves from face-centered cubic dendrite + minor σ -phase interdendrite at x = 0 to B2 dendrite with body-centered cubic (bcc) precipitates + bcc interdendrite with B2 precipitates at x = 2.0. This confirms the strong bcc-forming tendency of Al. The room-temperature Vickers hardness starts from the lowest, HV 220, at x = 0, attains to the maximum, HV 720, at x = 1.0, and then decreases to HV 615 at x = 2.0. Compared with the base alloy system, the current alloy system has a superior combination of hardness and fracture toughness. In addition, Al x CoCrFeMo 0.5 Ni alloys except x = 0 display a higher hot hardness level than those of Ni-based superalloys, including In 718 and In 718 H, up to 1273 K and show great potential in high-temperature applications.

Abstract:In this work, Al0.3CoCrFeNiSix (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0 in molar ratio) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were designed by introducing a non-metallic element Si. The microstructural evolution and its effect on the mechanical properties were discussed. The results suggested that the addition of Si promoted the transition from face-centered cubic (FCC) to body-centered cubic (BCC)/ordered BCC (B2) phases, in which the spherical Cr-rich BCC nanoparticles were coherently dispersed In the Al, Ni-rich B2 matrix. The mechanical properties were improved by adding an appropriate amount of Si. When x increased from 0 to 0.2, the tensile yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increased by 63% and 60%, respectively, while the elongation remained at 56%. The Vickers hardness enhanced from 143 HV (x = 0) to 826 HV (x = 1.0) with increasing Si content, and the specific wear rate reduced by two orders of magnitude accordingly. The strengthening mechanisms were evaluated for this series of HEAs based on the correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Abstract A series of FeCrNiMnAl x (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0 in molar ratio) high entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared by the vacuum arc melting method. The effects of Al content on the microstructure, mechanical and wear properties were investigated. For FeCrNiMn alloy, the microstructure was main homogeneous structure with face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, whilst FeCrNiMnAl 0.3 produced a dendritic microstructure consisting of a mixture of FCC + BCC + B2 phases, and the mixture BCC + B2 dendritic interdendritic microstructure appeared when the molar ratio of Al is beyond 0.5. The hardness and yield stress of the HEAs are effectively improved with the increased Al amount but the ductility is lowered. In this case, FeCrNiMnAl alloy showed decreased yield stress due to the deteriorated ductility. Moreover, the friction coefficient decreases, and the wear resistance improved with the increased aluminum content. FeCrNiMnAl 0.8 HEAs have the best wear resistance due to the advantages of achieving a balance of strength and ductility.

Abstract:A five-component AlxCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) system with finely-divided Al contents (x in molar ratio, x = 0-2.0) was prepared by vacuum arc melting and casting method. The effects of Al addition on the crystal structure, microstructure and mechanical property were investigated using Xray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Vickers hardness tester. The as-cast AlxCoCrFeNi alloys can possess face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC) or mixed crystal structure, depending on the aluminum content. The increase of aluminum content results in the formation of BCC structure which is a dominant factor of hardening. All the BCC phases in the as-cast alloys have a nano-scale two-phase structure formed by spinodal decomposition mechanism. The Al0.9CoCrFeNi alloy exhibits a finest spinodal structure consisting of alternating interconnected two-phase microstructure which explains its maximum hardness of Hv 527 among the alloys. The chemical composition analysis of FCC and BCC crystal structures, their lattice constants, overall hardness demonstrate that the formation of a single FCC solid solution should have Al addition <11 at.% and the formation of a single BCC solid solution requires Al addition at least 18.4 at.% in the AlxCoCrFeNi system. High-Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Cobalt-Free FeMnCrNi(Al) High-Entropy Alloys

Abstract:The high-temperature properties of new alloys need to be investigated to guide the hot working process. The temperature sensitivity of various microstructures of Fe45Mn15Cr15Ni25 and Fe35Mn15Cr15Ni25Al10 cobalt-free high-entropy alloys was investigated using high-temperature tensile tests. For recrystallized alloys, the increase in aluminum (Al) atoms exacerbates the emergence of serration behavior, prolongs the strain hardening capacity, and delays the decrease in plasticity. The Fe35Mn15Cr15Ni25Al10 alloy, with a high-density precipitated phase, exhibits excellent mechanical properties at 673 K. It has a yield strength of 735 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 1030 MPa, and an elongation of 11%. Ultimately, it has been found that the addition of the element Al improves the strength, oxidation resistance, and thermal stability of the alloy. According to the solid solution strengthening model fitting and nanoindentation results, the temperature sensitivity of the yield strength of the alloy is primarily attributed to the solid solution strengthening and phase interface forces. There is relatively less variation in grain boundary strengthening and precipitation strengthening. The relationship between the mechanical properties and temperature of the alloy can be predicted to guide the machining process of the alloy.

Abstract:The effects of Al on microstructure and mechanical properties of AlxCoCrFeNi (x=0.1, 0.75 and 1.5) high-entropy alloys were systematically studied by using various characterization methods. It was found that the crystalline structure of AlxCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy varies markedly with Al content, which changes from the initial single face-centered cubic (fcc) to fcc plus ordered body-centered cubic (bcc) structure (B2) and then to a duplex bcc structure (A2+B2) as the Al content is increased. The chemical composition analysis reveals that Al primarily partitions to B2 phase, suggesting Al is a stabilizer of B2 structure. With increasing Al content, more Ni and Al partition to the B2 phase due to the very negative mixing enthalpy of Ni and Al, and another phase enriched in Cr and Fe transforms from fcc to disordered bcc. Nano indentation measurements show that the hardness of AlxCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy increases with Al content, accompanied by the decrease of ductility. The stability of single-phase solid solution in AlxCoCrFeNi HEAs is deduced from various criteria. Combined with the experiment results of other similar HEA systems, such as AlxCoCrFeNiCu, the effects of Al addition on the microstructure of AlxCoCrFeNi HEAs are discussed based on the Gibbs free energy of all competing phases and the fundamental properties of constituent elements. The aim of current study is to provide experimental evidence to establish a correlation between the microstructure and mechanical properties to search for high-entropy alloys with higher performances.

Abstract:Al x CoCrFeNi (x = 0.1, 0.5 and 1) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared using a spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique combined with aerosol powder. Their microstructure and phase constituents were characterized using an X-ray diffractometer and SEM, and their tensile properties, hardness and compactness were tested. The results show that the crystal structure of the Al x CoCrFeNi HEAs changed significantly with the Al content, from the original single face-centered cubic FCC phase (Al0.1CoCrFeNi) to an FCC + BCC structure (Al0.5CoCrFeNi), and then to FCC + BCC + sigma (σ) phase structures (AlCoCrFeNi). Chemical composition analysis showed that the crystal structure transformation was related to the segregation caused by the increased Al content. The hardness of the Al x CoCrFeNi HEAs increases with increasing Al content, and the hardness of AlCoCrFeNi reaches a maximum of 507.3 HV. The tensile properties of the alloy show a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with increasing Al content, and the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the Al0.5CoCrFeNi alloy reach maximum values of 527.4 MP, 943.3 MPa and 28.2%, respectively. The fracture mechanism of the Al0.1CoCrFeNi and Al0.5CoCrFeNi alloys is typical ductile fracture, while that of the AlCoCrFeNi alloy is cleavage fracture. The compactness of the alloy increases with the Al content. The samples were also subjected to high-temperature water vapour corrosion, and corrosion products such as Al3Fe5O12, CoCr2O4 and NiCr2O4 were found in the Al0.1 and Al0.5 alloys, whereas no oxide peaks were detected using XRD for the Al1 alloy. It was also presumed that a very thin alumina film was generated on the surface of the Al1 alloy, preventing the oxidation of the sample, in combination with the analysis of SEM, EDS and XPS behaviour.

Abstract:An elevation of ATP levels in luteal cells markedly enhances their response to gonadotropin. In contrast, depletion of ATP in all cells leads to a series of interrelated events that produces irreversible cell injury. Since the corpus luteum has a transient existence, functional regression and involution of this gland play a fundamental role in the regulation of reproduction. The objective of the present studies was to evaluate whether the luteal ATP content may be regulated in an endocrine fashion and whether luteolysis may be linked to depletion of ATP in the corpus luteum in vivo. The present studies show that removal of the pituitary, maintenance of luteal function in hypophysectomized rats with PRL, or acute treatment with prostaglandin F2 alpha had no effect on luteal ATP levels. However, LH produced a rapid and marked decrease in adenine nucleotide levels in both intact and hypophysectomized PRL-replaced rats, whereas GTP levels were unaffected. In pituitary-intact rats, this same effect of LH occurred within 5 min, was maximal (40% depletion) within 30 min, and was sustained for many hours. Depletion of ATP by LH was dose dependent and evident with low doses of LH. In addition, a decrease in luteal ATP levels was seen during functional luteolysis in the rat, which was directly related to a rise in the serum levels of LH, but not FSH. In contrast, LH had no effect on ATP depletion in isolated cells prepared from the total luteinized ovary, or in enriched preparations of luteal cells. Thus, the depletion of ATP by LH in vivo appears to be mediated by intraovarian agents of unknown nature. We suggest that the rise in LH levels that follows functional luteolysis, due to reduced negative feedback by progesterone, produces a rapid decrease in luteal ATP levels which induces irreversible cell damage and, ultimately, involution of the corpus luteum. This effect would, presumably, be exacerbated as LH levels rise to maximum at ovulation or until LH receptors become down-regulated.
Mechanical Performance of the Alxcocrcufeni High-Entropy Alloy System with Multiprincipal Elements

Abstract:The Al x CoCrCuFeNi alloys with multiprincipal elements (x=the aluminum content in molar ratio, from 0 to 3.0) were synthesized using a well-developed arc-melting and casting method, and their mechanical properties were investigated. These alloys exhibited promising mechanical properties, including excellent elevated-temperature strength and good wear resistance. With the addition of aluminum from x=0 to 3.0, the hardness of the alloys increased from HV 133 to 655, mainly attributed to the increased portion of strong bcc phase to ductile fcc phase, both of which were strengthened by the solid solution of aluminum atoms and the precipitation of nanophases. The alloys exhibited superior high-temperature strengths up to 800 °C, among which the Al0.5CoCrCuFeNi alloy, especially, had enhanced plasticity and a large strain-hardening capacity. Moreover, the wear resistance of these alloys was similar to that of ferrous alloys at the same hardness level, while the alloys with lower hardness exhibited relatively higher resistance because of their large strain-hardening capacity.
Nano-Structure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of AlxCoCrFeNi2.1 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.7, 1.0, 1.3) High-Entropy Alloy Prepared by Mechanical Alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract:The AlxCoCrFeNi2.1 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.7, 1.0, 1.3) multi-component high-entropy alloy (HEA) was synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) and Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), The impact of the percentage of Al on crystal structure transition, microstructure evolution and mechanical properties were studied. Crystal structure was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results show that with the increasing of Al content, the crystal structure of the alloys gradually transformed from a nanocrystalline phase of FCC to a mix of FCC and BCC nanocrystalline. The hardness was found to increase steadily from 433 HV to 565 HV due to the increase in fraction of BCC nanocrystalline phase. Thus, the compressive fracture strength increased from 1702 MPa to 2333 MPa; in contrast, the fracture strain decreased from 39.8% to 15.6%.

Abstract:CoCrFeNiAl x ( x = 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2, molar ratio) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared by directional solidification at the withdrawal rate of 70 μm/s and were simply referred to as Al 0.3 , Al 0.6 , Al 0.9 and Al 1.2 alloy, respectively. The effects of Al content on microstructure evolution, component segregation and compressive property of these alloys were investigated. The study revealed that increasing Al content induced a transition from face-centered cubic (FCC) to body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure. Simultaneously, the microstructure transformed from coarse irregular dendrites to equiaxed dendrites and the morphology of the solid-liquid interface changed from cellular dendrites to dendrites. Specifically, the Al 0.3 alloy exhibited the single FCC phase, while the Al 0.6 alloy consisted of dendritic FCC of phase CoCrFe-enriched and inter-dendritic BCC phase of AlNi-enriched. The Al 0.9 and Al 1.2 alloys showed AlNi-enriched precipitate B2 phase and CoCrFe-enriched matrix FCC phase. As the Al content increased, the CoCrFeNiAl x HEAs ultimate compressive strength initially increased and then decreased. The Al 0.9 alloy achieved the supreme ultimate compressive strength of 2265.17 MPa, attributed to crystal structure transformation and solid solution strengthening. Additionally, the compressive strain consistently decreased with increasing Al content, reaching the minimum of 23.46% for the Al 1.2 alloy.

Abstract:In CoCrNiCuMo high-entropy alloys (HEAs), the Cu is highly susceptible to segregation, resulting in significant deterioration of plasticity, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. In this study, Al with atomic ratios of 0, 0.26, 0.56, and 1.00 are added to CoCrNiCuMo to regulate the segregation. The microstructures and composition of CoCrNiCuMoAlx alloys are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis. The phase composition of the alloys is analyzed by x-ray diffractometry (XRD). The microhardness, compression, friction and wear resistance, and corrosion resistance are also tested to investigate the effect of the Al on the microstructure and properties of the CoCrNiCuMo high-entropy alloys. The results show that, with the addition of Al, the Cu in HEA no longer appears as spheres for large-scale deviations, but form Al-Ni-Cu-rich phases with the Al and Ni in the BCC structure uniformly distributed at the grain boundaries, while the grain size is refined to a certain extent. As the amount of Al addition increases, the values of hardness and compressive strength increase. The CoCrNiCuMoAl1.0 alloy possesses the highest hardness and strength of 621.5 HV5 and 1775 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the wear resistance and corrosion resistance are gradually improved with the increase of Al.

Abstract:In this study, an equiatomic FeCoNiCrMn high entropy alloy (HEA) was examined and compared to two Al-containing variants, FeCoNi 1.5 CrMnAl 0.5 and FeCoNi 1.5 CrAl 0.5 , in terms of microstructure, phase composition and hardness. The vacuum cast, hot isostatically pressed (HIP'd) alloys were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), SEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Vickers microhardness testing. The DSC results indicated that the solidus and liquidus temperature of the base alloy on cooling are 1296.3 and 1314.8°C, respectively. Its microstructure exhibited a single-phase face centred cubic (FCC) structure, with a small amount of σ-phase. The two Al-containing alloys (FeCoNi 1.5 CrMnAl 0.5 and FeCoNi 1.5 CrAl 0.5 ) were observed to form a secondary phase, in a FCC matrix, along the grain boundaries and within the grains. FeCoNi 1.5 CrMnAl 0.5 had a solidus and liquidus temperature at 1271.8°C and 1287.6°C upon cooling, while FeCoNi 1.5 CrAl 0.5 exhibited a solidus at 1354.7°C and liquidus at 1376.1°C. The hardness of the base composition was measured at 142 HV while the addition of Al and increase of Ni content in FeCoNi 1.5 CrMnAl 0.5 increased the hardness to 202 HV and the removal of Mn in FeCoNi 1.5 CrAl 0.5 further enhanced the hardness to 217 HV. These results aim to form a basis for understanding the effects of HEA microstructure on the material performance in oxidising environments, such as supercritical-CO 2 .

Abstract:This experiment analyzes the effects of Al content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of FeCoCrNiAlx high entropy alloy. We can observe that the high entropy alloy is FCC single-phase structure when the Al element content is low [1] . With the Al content increases, the alloy structure gradually changed from the FCC phase to a new phase composed of the FCC phase and BCC/B2 phase, and finally into the BBC single phase. The difficult element diffusion phenomenon and high entropy effect make the alloy form a simple solid solution structure. With the precipitation of the second phase, the properties of the alloy are strengthened [2] . After the Al element is gradually added to the alloy, the grain structure is refined, and fine crystal strengthening occurs. The experiment results show that with the increase of Al content, the mechanical properties of the alloy are significantly improved, and the tensile strength is increased from 358 MPa to 1265 MPa. Yield strength increased from 166 MPa to 878 MPa. Hardness increased from 1.4 Gpa to 4.22 Gpa. However, the fracture elongation of the alloy decreased from 51.3% to 12.2%.
