Analyzing Critical Thinking Elements in the Argument Structure of Non-English-Major Chinese Undergraduate Students' Writing

Abstract:Developing students' critical thinking skills in writing is essential in different educational contexts. However, the analysis of the argument structure in non-English-major undergraduate students' writing remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to analyze the structure of argumentative English papers written by Chinese university students, based on the adapted Toulmin model of argument structure constituting six elements (claim, data, counterargument claim, counterargument data, rebuttal claim, and rebuttal data). The participants in this study were a class of 47 sophomores enrolled in the course "Modern Education Technology" at Zhejiang University, China. They were required to identify the components of the argument structure in a pre-assigned short text with two opposing views, and to write an argumentative essay. Content analysis was used to assess the students' CT and argument structures. In both tasks, the results found that the majority of the students could identify author's claim with at least a piece of data. They also stated their own claims and provided at least one piece of data to back these up. However, a majority failed to identify the author's counter argument and even though many stated the counter argument claims in their essays, most were unjustified. The majority did not state a conclusion in both tasks. This study may be beneficial in understanding non-English major-undergraduate students' critical thinking skills in English writing and the results suggest that L2 essay writing instructors should use active and explicit methods such as computer-assisted argument mapping tools like RationaleTM to help learners master the argument structure. Some pedagogic guidelines are listed for the implementation of the RationaleTM software in the L2 classroom.

Abstract:<span>This study aims to explore the effect of argument maps supported with peer feedback on pre-service teachers' argumentation skills. The participants consisted of 43 (21 female, 22 male) pre-service teachers studying at the Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technologies. There were two groups as experiment (n = 23) and control (20) in the research. The learners in the control condition developed arguments individually about teaching methods through argument maps. Similar to the control group, those in the experimental condition first accomplished the argument mapping tasks. Later, they performed peer feedback activity. Both quantitative and qualitative analyzes were conducted to gain a deep insight into the effect of these interventions on pre-service teachers' argumentation skills. The results showed that both control and experimental groups' argumentation skills improved statistically significant. Additionally, we found using argument maps with peer feedback gives more positive results compared to the only argument mapping.</span>

Abstract:The purpose of the present paper is to elicit the effects of reflective thinking-based teaching activities on pre-service teachers’ reflective thinking skills, critical thinking skills, democratic attitudes, and academic achievement. The paper employed experimental design. The study group consisted of second year students from the Education Faculty of Gazi University in the 2010-2011 academic year. In total, 42 students (21 experimental; 21 control) were selected. Data were collected from:1) California Critical Thinking Scale, 2) Democratic Attitudes Scale, 3) Academic Achievement Test, 4) Reflective Thinking Tendency Scale for Teachers and Pre-service Teachers, 5) Reflective Journal, and 6) Rubric for portfolio.Though the experimental group obtained higher post-test, achievement, reflective thinking, critical thinking, democratic attitude, and academic achievement mean scores than the control group, these differences were found to be statistically not significant. The students were able to perform the behaviors required by reflection-on-action and reflection-in-action processes to a great extent.
An analysis of the online information searching strategies and metacognitive skills exhibited by university students during argumentation activities

Abstract:Argumentation and the use of metacognitive skills are effective when implementing and supporting online information searching strategies, Screen recordings, semi-structured interviews, online information searching strategy inventory, and the metacognitive awareness inventory were used to collect data. Descriptive, predictive, relational and deductive analysis techniques were used for the analysis of the data. According to the results obtained, argumentation is an effective tool in developing metacognitive skills and information searching strategies. Purposeful thinking, selection of main ideas, evaluation and disorientation online searching strategies are used frequently in the argumentation processes. Argumentation activities strengthen the relationships between information searching strategies and metacognitive skills. Further, argumentation activities can be used to further individuals' experience with online information searching strategies, and to develop their metacognitive skills.

The effects of blogging on pre-service teachers’ reflective thinking and self-efficacy

Abstract:<span>Although blogs have mostly been regarded to be useful in learning environments, it has been observed that few experimental studies with control groups have been conducted on the use of blogs in order to promote pre-service teachers' development. It is a mixed method research study conducted through pre-test and post-test experimental design with a control group. Although the research framework was based on the experimental quantitative data, qualitative interviews were also held with the experimental group at the end of the procedure. 46 pre-service teachers were included in the study, 21 for the experimental group, and 25 for the control group. In the end, qualitative data were collected from 14 voluntary pre-service teachers in the experimental group. As a result of the analyses, it was revealed that the experimental and control groups, which were identical at the beginning, differed significantly at the end of the experimental process in terms of reflective thinking and teacher self-efficacy. In other words, it was concluded that blogging was effective in developing the aforementioned variables, and the research findings were supported by qualitative interviews. Pre-service teachers in the experimental group pointed out that blogging contributed to the course, their professional and personal development.</span>

Abstract:The aim of this study is to conduct a meta-analysis study to examine the effectiveness of the argumentation-based teaching method in terms of sample, subject, years and some variables (academic success, attitude, interest, etc.). Meta-analysis method was used in this study. In order to gather the studies included in meta-analysis, various sources were used in the study. Three type studies were brought together for the meta-analysis: journal articles, doctoral and master thesis. The Social Science Citatio Index (SSCI) journals, Turkish Academic Network and Information Center Social Science Database, national printed journals, Academic Search Complete, Education Research Complete and ERIC databases were searched for journal articles. The Council of Turkish Higher Education Thesis Center was scanned to get the dissertations/theses. While scanning these platforms, the key concepts of "argumentation", "argumentation-based science teaching", "argumentation-based science education", "discussion-oriented teaching method to science" were used. So, 47 studies were used in the meta-analysis. In the study, as a result of the meta-analysis on the argumentation-based teaching process at the national level, it was determined that there was no significant difference in terms of the level of classes in which the studies were conducted and the independent variables examined in the studies, but there was a significant difference between the subject areas in favor of the subject area of chemistry.
Reflection in pre-service teacher education: exploring the nature of four EFL pre-service teachers’ reflections

Abstract:This year-long study examined the nature of reflections belonging to four EFL (English as a Foreign Language) pre-service teachers. It was longitudinal in nature, taking place during the phases of teachers’ initial observation, teaching practice, and entry into the teaching profession. This study aimed to investigate the nature of student-teachers’ individual reflections throughout the phases of school experience, teaching practice, and entry into the workplace. Data collection was facilitated via interviews conducted throughout the study’s duration, and the collected data were subsequently analyzed deductively using content analysis. In addition, the onion model of reflection of was employed for interpretation of the data. The findings of this interpretation indicated that although most of the reflections concerned environment, behavior, and competence (outer level of the onion model), some of the reflections nevertheless pertained to mission (inner level of the onion model). Moreover, an examination of participants’ individual reflection processes revealed that although reflections initially were outer-level in nature, by the end of the study they had become more inner-level-oriented.
Examining the Effect of Peer and Self Assessment Practices on Writing Skills

Abstract:This study aims to reveal how peer- and self-assessment practices influence the writing skills of 9th grade students. The study adopted mixed-methods explanatory design. The participants were 102 students attending a public school in Ankara. The quantitative data were collected through a quasi-experimental method, and qualitative data were collected through a case study. There were three groups of participants in this study: the 1st experimental group in which peer-assessment was carried out with 34 participants; the 2nd experimental group in which self-assessment was conducted with 34 students, and 34 students in the control group. The interventions lasted 7 weeks. Writing performance tasks and rubrics were used to gather quantitative data while a Semi-Structured Interview Form was used to collect the qualitative data. For the analysis, paired samples t-test, ANOVA, and content analysis were used. The findings revealed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores of experimental groups in which peer and self-assessments were conducted whereas there was not a significant difference between the scores of the control group. The findings of ANOVA, the post-test results of the experimental and control groups showed that there was a significant difference between all groups in favor of the 1st experimental group in which peer assessment was applied. The qualitative findings of the study corroborate the quantitative findings. Hence, we can conclude that peer and self-assessment practices were effective both in the development of students' writing skills and on their attitudes and interests towards writing.
The Effect of the Write, Talk, and Rewrite Dialogic Writing Treatment on Argumentative Texts: a Replication Study in Türkiye

Abstract:The current study replicated an earlier investigation by Bouwer and van der Veen (2023) where 10 Grade 5 and 6 classrooms in the Netherlands (210 students) were randomly assigned to a treatment or control condition, with treatment students evidencing improvements in the quality of their essays after practice writing argumentative essays, reading and discussing them with a small group of peers, and revising each essay based on the discussion that ensued. In the present study, 12 Grade 2 to 4 classrooms in Türkiye (383 students) were randomly assigned to this write, talk, and rewrite dialogic treatment or to a control condition. Students in the control condition practiced planning and writing the same four argumentative essays as treatment students did during the experiment, and each of these essays was shared with peers (time spent in both conditions was comparable). Control students did not, however, discuss their essay with peers or use such feedback to revise them as was done by students in the write, talk, and rewrite dialogic treatment. When the nested nature of the data and pretest scores were held constant, the quality of the argumentative posttest essays produced by students in the treatment condition evidenced greater improvement than essays written by control students. The same outcome was obtained for the length of essays (number of words) when the nested nature of the data and pretest scores were held constant. This investigation provided evidence that the write, talk, and rewrite dialogic intervention tested by Bouwer and van der Veen (2023) was effective in improving the argumentative writing of even younger students in a different country. Implications for research and practice are provided.

Analysis of the pre-service teachers’ teaching anxiety and coping strategies: A Turkish Elementary School Context

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the construct of English as a foreign language (EFL) pre-service teachers' feelings of anxiety before, while, and after experiencing teaching English within a Turkish elementary classroom setting. Specifically, this intrinsic qualitative study investigates the anxiety sources for pre-service teachers in their practicum experiences and the ways they adapted to cope with these anxiety-provoking sources. The data were triangulated by consulting three sources of data (e.g., open-ended questions in the self-report forms, open-ended questions in the peer-reflection forms, and diaries) relating the 32 participants' teaching experiences. The findings indicated that prior to teaching experience, classroom management is the major teaching anxiety source and the frequently employed coping strategy is to consult their mentors and cooperating teachers. However, during the actual teaching experience, being observed by a mentor was the most common concern and to cope with it, each participant developed different coping mechanisms. Finally, receiving negative feedback from mentors decreased self-confidence and to compensate, pre-service teachers frequently asked mentors to provide further advice. It is implicated that teacher education programs raise the awareness of pre-service teachers of the potential challenges awaiting them in the practicum experience and equip them with coping strategies.
Towards becoming critical reflection writers: a case of English language teacher candidates

Abstract:This study aimed at investigating English language teacher candidates’ reflections based on observations of real language teaching. Participants were 49 third-year undergraduate students studying at the English Language Teaching Department of a state university in Turkey. The rationale for selecting third-year students as participants was to describe the characteristics of written critical reflections of teacher candidates before they started practicum experience in their fourth-year of study at university. Participants’ critical reflection writings were utilized as data collection tools. The data obtained from reflective writings were analysed based on the Reflection Scale by Bain, Packer and Mills (1999). The analysis of data related to participants’ views on the observation and reflection writing process was conducted via inductive content analysis. The qualitative data indicated that English language teacher candidates did not reach a high degree in terms of criticality in their reflections. In addition, they did not tend to become more critical in their reflections over time even though they believed that reflection was beneficial for their professional development.
The The benefits of “Academic Writing” course for the freshmen in English-medium-instruction departments in a Turkish state university

Abstract:The importance of academic writing is prevalent especially for the students taking English-medium instruction (EMI). After the intensive language lessons in the School of Foreign Languages, students must reach a certain level (B2) in order to pursue their academic studies in English. In addition to their departmental courses, freshmen in some EMI departments are offered “Academic Writing” course while some others do not have this opportunity. Thus, this study has tried to determine the efficiency and the benefits of this course for the freshmen in this university. For the purpose of the study, 5 freshmen that took “Academic Writing” course in the spring semester and 6 other freshmen who were not offered this course were assigned to write an academic essay on a given topic by the researcher. After the submission of their papers, the researcher had semi-structured interviews with each participant. Data were analyzed qualitatively via manual coding. It was found that the students who took “Academic Writing” course were more successful than their peers who were not given this opportunity in terms of grammar and vocabulary knowledge as well as the content formation in their academic papers.
The effect of online argumentation activities workshop on pre-service science teachers’ climate change awareness

Abstract:The aim of this study is to increase pre-service science teachers’ awareness of climate change through online argumentation activities. The study prepared pre-service training content based on online argumentation to increase climate change awareness. For the training, activities were prepared based on online argumentation for the sub-dimensions of climate change, which are content knowledge, awareness of the effects of climate change, awareness of personal initiatives, awareness of industrial initiatives, and tendencies towards preventing climate change. Expert opinions were taken about the activities and then they were finalized. Data was collected through an open-ended questionnaire applied as pre- and post-test. 32 pre-service science teachers from 22 different universities across Türkiye participated in the online training. The climate change awareness form was applied before and after the training. Data was analyzed using a content analysis approach. As a result of the study, it was observed that there was a significant difference in the pre-service teachers’ content knowledge of climate change, and they provided more justifications in the sub-dimensions of climate change awareness after the training, and their awareness increased.

Abstract:This descriptive qualitative study aimed to investigate the types and sources of errors committed by Turkish students learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in their foreign language (L2) writings as well as find out whether there is a difference in terms of the number, classification, and sources of errors between students at two different proficiency levels. To this end, the study was carried out at the School of Foreign Languages at a non-profit foundation university in Turkey in the 2020-2021 academic year. The students participating in the study (N= 32), who were selected using the convenient sampling method and participated in the study voluntarily, were Turkish preparatory class students having two different English proficiency levels, namely A1 level (n= 16) and A2 level (n= 16). Data for the study came from three different narrative paragraphs (each ranging in a 100 - 200 word band) written by the students, and a total of 96 paragraphs were collected for the study. The analysis revealed that the most frequent type of error was grammatical errors overall, a large part of which was the inappropriate use of verb forms. Moreover, findings concerning the potential differences between two proficiency levels showed that A1 level learners committed more errors than A2 level learners in all types except the semantic errors. Based on these findings, a number of implications for L2 writing teachers are discussed.

Abstract:Learning to write has a significant impact on determining the ability and quality of students in academic activities. One form of essay featured in academic writing is the argumentative essay. Writing an argumentative essay leads students to explore their opinions or arguments to convince the reader. Nevertheless, some studies show that college students face some difficulties in writing argumentative essays. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate the students’ ability to write argumentative essays in terms of essay structure. A qualitative case was used in this study. The data was taken from the final test of the Advance Writing course written by 36 fourth-semester students of the English Language Education Program. The research findings showed that most students’ ability to write an argumentative essay is well developed, with a result of 31%. The result indicated that the students knew how to write an argumentative essay based on its structure, but they still made some mistakes dealing with sentence structure and the credibility of the references used.
Analysing the evolution of argumentation quality among pre-service biology teachers amidst the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the most controversial issues in recent years. The pandemic's impact on argumentation skills, crucial for science teachers, needs exploration to understand its effects on how they evaluate evidence and engage in discussions. This study investigated how biology pre-service teachers' (PSTs) argumentation quality changed over the pandemic's first two months of social distancing and quarantine. Using qualitative and quantitative methodologies, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and Toulmin's Argument Pattern (TAP) was employed to evaluate the arguments. Initially, nearly half of the participants demonstrated low-level arguments. However, during the second round of interviews, a decrease in Level 1 and 2 arguments and an increase in Level 3 arguments were observed. The observed improvements in argumentation quality, particularly in the use of counterclaims, warrants, and rebuttals, underscore the role of increased familiarity with the issue and exposure to diverse information sources. These findings suggest that real-life contexts, such as the pandemic, offer opportunities for PSTs to develop more sophisticated argumentation skills when exposed to multiple perspectives and ongoing engagement with the topic. Understanding these changes can inform teaching strategies and teacher training programmes, especially during global crises. Future research could examine argumentation quality related to issues such as vaccination and COVID-19 variants.

Preparing pre-service teachers to integrate teaching technologies into their classrooms: Examining the effects of teaching environments based on open-ended, hands-on and authentic tasks

Abstract:Pre-service training is the most important stage when teachers learn about integrating technology into their teaching. Pre-service teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of technologies can be used to predict their intention of including technology in their classrooms in the future. Having the necessary technical equipment available is considered important by these teachers to deal with current educational problems, and find solutions. Therefore, pre-service teachers' educational activities were studied in this study and the use of new technologies in education was discussed. The contribution of different methods regarding the use of digital technologies for instructional purposes by pre-service teachers in different departments was investigated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the different methods have an effect on the teachers' technology integration self-efficacy (TISE), motivation, satisfaction and attitude towards the use of technology. The opinions of the pre-service teachers about the technologies used in the lessons were also analyzed. This study employed a mixed-method methodology. The sample in this study comprised 96 pre-service teachers at a university in Turkey who were divided into groups. The study involved a personal information form, semi-structured interview form, and four different scales. An ANCOVA analysis and descriptive statistics were used with the quantitative data, and content analysis was used in the analysis of the qualitative data. The results of this research show that a significant difference exists between the technology integration exercises performed using different methods, the students' level of contribution to TISE and their motivation and technology use attitudes (TUA). The motivation and satisfaction levels were higher in the groups where authentic task-based instruction was used. It has been observed that closed-ended practical tasks support students' self-efficacy to integrate technology. On the other hand, open-ended task-based activities were found to support an increase in attitudes towards technology use more than in the other groups. The group where closed-ended applications for technology integration self-efficacy, motivation, satisfaction and use of technology were performed differed in terms of gender, department and grade.

Problematizing Argumentative Writing in an Iranian EFL Undergraduate Context

Abstract:Argumentative writing is the most important genre that undergraduate students need to learn to meet their academic requirements. Hence, many studies in different ESL/EFL academic contexts have explored different aspects of argumentative essay at micro text level and also wider educational, contextual and cultural levels. However, majority of these studies have focused on separate aspects of argumentative writing. Therefore, in the absence of studies which examine different variables involved in undergraduate EFL students’ argumentative writing, the present study was conducted by drawing on multiple data sources: students’ perceptions of the argumentative texts, writing teachers’ views on argumentative writing of the students and finally analysis of the structure of the argumentative texts written by the students. For this aim, a total of 66 argumentative essays written by the undergraduate students was analyzed. In addition, a group of 66 undergraduate students majoring in English literature and 20 university writing instructors were interviewed. The findings revealed that the concept of argumentation was poorly conceived and tackled with by the learners. Teachers also counted various grounds that students faced difficulties. Moreover, the structural analysis of the students’ texts showed that they had problems with developing secondary elements of argumentation. In sum, the study discusses that the failure to develop an argumentative essay by the Iranian undergraduate English majors entails several academic, contextual and pedagogical grounds. Implications for improving argumentative writing in the EAP context would be provided.

Abstract:Multiple approaches, strategies, and experiments have been used in studies to determine the quality of reflective practice in teacher education. It includes research on both general education and TEFL pre-service teachers. Most of these studies focus around the testing and development of tools for the practice of reflection, as well as testing and developing the assessment of reflective practice. Furthermore, by analyzing studies on the forms, features, and evaluative aspects of reflective writing, this literature review paper attempts to go deeply into the area of reflexivity and personal reflection. The research analyzed in this paper should have established the study's position and goals in terms of the style of reflective writing and theoretical approaches to assessment and appraisal attitude. It has stated its role in enhancing students' learning and identity, as well as the importance of affective meanings in this category. Nonetheless, research on this component of reflective writing and how students' perspective and identity are shaped appears to be restricted, suggesting a lack of decent knowledge. Examining the various techniques to evaluation and conducting research on writer position in student teachers' discourse highlighted the necessity to create a framework based on an attitude appraisal system.

Based on this, this article focuses on the importance of developing academic writing skills among prospective educators in the modern educational environment. As part of the theoretical part of the article, based on the analysis of previous studies, the main challenges faced by prospective educators when mastering academic writing skills were identified, such as insufficient understanding of academic standards, inexperience in structuring and arguing their ideas, as well as limitations in language competence.The empirical study was conducted using thematic analysis method using semi-structured interviews with 15 fourth-year students, during which the following research questions were posed: “What difficulties do students experience when writing scientific papers? What strategies can be used to improve academic writing skills during learning process?The thematic analysis methodology was based on six steps, which included becoming familiar with the data, creating preliminary codes, exploring themes, scrutinizing themes, identifying theme labels, and preparing a final report. The results showed that prospective educators face a number of problems: a lack of specialized university disciplines aimed at developing academic writing skills, difficulties with organizing a literature review, problems with structuring research work, and a general lack of motivation.Based on the identification of challenges and teaching strategies in the development of academic writing skills, practical recommendations were proposed to improve the process of preparing future teachers.
