Abstract:Element Sc is a promising candidate for optimizing the high-temperature mechanical properties of Al alloys.In this study,the Sc-solute,Al3Sc-vacancy and Al3Sc-solute interactions in aluminium are inves-tigated extensively by using first-principles calculations.The correlation between the various interaction energies and the solute atomic size,and the Sc-solute compound formation energy has been evaluated.A negative correlation between the first nearest neighbour Sc-solute binding energies and the lowest Sc-solute compound formation energies has been identified,while the second nearest neighbour Sc-solute binding energies increase monotonically with the solute atomic size.Al3Sc precipitates can bind vacancy strongly at the specific atomic site,but their relatively low number density limits their influence on va-cancy behaviours during the ageing period shortly after quenching.Compared to the atomic size,the trend for solute segregating at the interface between Al3Sc precipitate and Al bulk is more strongly re-lated to the Sc-solute binding energy.The calculated results can clarify the available experimental obser-vations for Al-Sc,Al-Cu,Al-Mg-Si and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys,and it is hoped to guide the design of high-performance Al alloys.
Chemical bonding effects in Sc compounds studied using X-ray absorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies

Abstract:Advances on understanding the nature of the chemical bonding and electron correlation effects during the X-ray absorption process in ionic–covalent metal complexes has been achieved for most of the transition elements, except for scandium, due to the lack of a systematic series of spectroscopic reference spectra and the shortage of standard crystallographic data on scandium compounds. To close the gap, the chemical bonding effects in eight Sc compounds are studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at Sc K and L 2,3 absorption edges and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Indeed, the fine structure of the XAS Sc K edge reflects the chemical sp 3 -like bond formed between scandium and the ligand while the L 2,3 edge and the pre-edge features of the K-edge provide a direct insight into the crystal field parameters at the Sc site in the coordination compound. The XPS data provide the information on binding energies of the core electrons involved in the electron transitions caused by the absorption of high energy X-rays. XAS and XPS complement each other by accessing the information on Sc structure on bulk and the surface. Herein, comprehensive information on the electronic structure of well-known crystalline materials based on Sc is given with spectroscopic fingerprints X-ray data. This will help to predict the formation of chemical bonds in the unknown components via the systematic evaluation of the available spectroscopic fingerprints.

Abnormally Low Activation Energy in Cubic Na3SbS4 Superionic Conductors

Abstract:Inorganic Na-ion superionic conductors play a vital role in all-solid-state Na batteries that operate at room temperature. Sodium thioantimonate (Na3SbS4), a popular sulfide-based solid electrolyte, has attracted serious attention due to its advantages of high ionic conductivity at room temperature and impressive chemical stability under ambient conditions. Much research detailing Na3SbS4 focused on its synthetic approaches and interfacial stability against Na metal, yet, there is limited information elucidating a fundamental understanding of the Na- ion diffusion mechanisms in Na3SbS4 with different crystal structures (e.g., tetragonal and cubic). Herein, we combine real-time electrochemical impedance measurements with theoretical simulations based on density functional theory and in situ quasi-elastic neutron scattering to study the Na-ion conductive properties of Na3SbS4 during its phase transition from a tetragonal to cubic structure. Although there is a slight change in the lattice parameters, the energy barrier for Na-ion diffusion in the tetragonal structure was determined to be much larger (5-10 times) than that in the cubic structure from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. The high degree of symmetry in cubic Na3SbS4 leads to less interatomic correlations between Na and S(Sb) atoms, a shorter jump distance (2.85 angstrom), and a larger diffusion coefficient. This research provides insight into understanding the Na-ion diffusion in solid electrolytes with phase transitions and provides fundamental guidance for designing novel solid-state Na-ion conductors.
Structural and electronic properties of ScnOm (n=1~3, m=1~2n) clusters: Theoretical study using screened hybrid density functional theory

Abstract:The structural and electronic properties of small scandium oxide clusters ScnOm (n = 1 - 3, m = 1 - 2n) are systematically studied within the screened hybrid density functional theory. It is found that the ground states of these scandium oxide clusters can be obtained by the sequential oxidation of small "core" scandium clusters. The fragmentation analysis demonstrates that the ScO, Sc2O2, Sc2O3, Sc3O3, and Sc3O4 clusters are especially stable. Strong hybridizations between O-2p and Sc-3d orbitals are found to be the most significant character around the Fermi level. In comparison with standard density functional theory calculations, we find that the screened hybrid density functional theory can correct the wrong symmetries and yield more precise description for the localized 3d electronic states of scandium.

Abstract:Decisive investigations on stabilities of Sc2O@C-86 and Sc2S@C-86 isomers were carried out via density functional theory with statistical thermodynamic method. Sc-2 X@C-2v(63751)-C-86 and Sc2X@C-1(63755)-C-86(X = O and S), observing isolated pentagon rules, were confirmed as thermodynamically preferred isomers within fullerene-formation temperature. Particularly, it is the first time to acknowledge C1( )63755)-C(86 )as host for encapsulating Sc2X (X = 0 and S), herein. Interactions between Sc and nonmetal atoms in Sc2X@C-2v (63751)-C-86 and Sc2X@C-1(63755)-C-86(X = O and S) were specifically explored. Importantly, characteristics and electron density ellipticity for independent X-Sc (X = O and S) bonds and their bonding paths performed clear distinction due to weak intramolecular interaction. Abstract:Anion ion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) are used to investigate the electronic and structural properties of ScSin- (n = 2 similar to 6) clusters and their neutrals. We find that the structures of ScSin- are similar to those of Si-n+1(-). The most stable isomers of ScSin- cluster anions and their neutrals are similar for n=2, 3 and 5 but different for n=4 and 6, indicating that the charge effect on geometry is size dependent for small scandium-silicon clusters. The low electron binding energy (EBE) tails observed in the spectra of ScSi4,6- can be explained by the existence of less stable isomers. A comparison between ScSin- and VSin- clusters shows the effects of metal size and electron configuration on cluster geometries.

Abstract:The electronic, optical and chemical properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides strongly depend on their three-dimensional atomic structure and crystal defects. Using Re-doped MoS<sub>2</sub> as a model system, here we present scanning atomic electron tomography as a method to determine three-dimensional atomic positions as well as positions of crystal defects such as dopants, vacancies and ripples with a precision down to 4 pm. We measure the three-dimensional bond distortion and local strain tensor induced by single dopants. By directly providing these experimental three-dimensional atomic coordinates to density functional theory, we obtain more accurate electronic band structures than derived from conventional density functional theory calculations that relies on relaxed three-dimensional atomic coordinates. We anticipate that scanning atomic electron tomography not only will be generally applicable to determine the three-dimensional atomic coordinates of two-dimensional materials, but also will enable ab initio calculations to better predict the physical, chemical and electronic properties of these materials.

Effect of Sc spatial distribution on the electronic and ferroelectric properties of AlScN

Abstract:While aluminum scandium nitride based ferroelectric materials have shown significant promise for non-volatile memory applications, difficulties relating challenges in device performance, such as electrical leakage, to structural characteristics motivate improved understanding of the fundamental structure-property relationship. Spinodal decomposition has been reported in this material system, consistent with our observation of compositional segregation in AlScN films grown by reactive sputter epitaxy. To better understand the effects of spatially non-uniform Sc concentrations, the electronic and ferroelectric (FE) properties of AlScN as a function of Sc distribution are studied using density functional theory (DFT). We explore the impact of Sc-rich atomic planes in wurtzite AlScN with Sc concentration ranging from 0 to 44 at% through a supercell approach. We find that while spontaneous polarization decreases with Sc concentration (∼133 to 102 μC cm-2), periodic Sc-rich planar clusters slow this effect, suggesting that phase segregation counters the effects of increasing Sc composition. Furthermore, the FE switching barrier per formula unit (f.u.) as a function of composition exhibits a local maximum of 0.60 eV f.u.-1 at 25% Sc concentration in the presence of Sc-rich planes but decreases monotonically (0.51 to 0.28 eV f.u.-1) if Sc is uniformly distributed, suggesting that the spatial distribution of Sc plays an important role in the optoelectronic properties of the material by changing the energy landscape. Sc clustering also decreases the bandgap of the material. This study shows that the structural complexity arising from spatial composition modulation provides tunability of ferroelectric properties in AlScN ferroelectrics.
Tunable Electronic and Magnetic Properties of 3d Transition Metal Atom-Intercalated Transition Metal Dichalcogenides: A Density Functional Theory Study

Abstract:Currently, intercalation has become an effective way to modify the fundamental properties of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials. Using density functional theory, we systematically investigated the structures and electronic and magnetic properties of bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) intercalated with 3d TM atoms (TM = Sc–Ni), TM@BL_MS2 (M = Mo, V). Our results demonstrate that all the studied TM@BL_MS2s are of high stability, with large binding energies and high diffusion barriers of TM atoms. Interestingly, most TM@BL_MoS2s and TM@BL_VS2s are found to be stable ferromagnets. Among them, TM@BL_MoS2s (TM = Sc, Ti, Fe, Co) are ferromagnetic metals, TM@BL_MoS2 (TM = V, Cr) and TM@BL_VS2 (TM = Sc, V) are ferromagnetic half-metals, and the remaining systems are found to be ferromagnetic semiconductors. Exceptions are found for Ni@BL_MoS2 and Cr@BL_VS2, which are nonmagnetic semiconductors and ferrimagnetic half-metals, respectively. Further investigations reveal that the electromagnetic properties of TM@BL_MoS2 are significantly influenced by the concentration of intercalated TM atoms. Our study demonstrates that TM atom intercalation is an effective approach for manipulating the electromagnetic properties of two-dimensional materials, facilitating their potential applications in spintronic devices.

Abstract:Remarkable phenomena arise at well-defined heterostructures, composed of transition metal oxides, which is absent in the bulk counterpart, providing us a paradigm for exploring the various electron correlation effects. The functional properties of such heterostructures have attracted much attention in the microelectronic and renewable energy fields. Exotic and unexpected states of matter could arise from the reconstruction and coupling among lattice, charge, orbital and spin at the interfaces.Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) is a powerful tool to visualize the lattice structure and electronic structure at the atomic scale. In the present study some novel phenomena of oxide heterostructures at the atomic scale are summarized and pointed out from the perspective of electron microscopy.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the design and experimental validation of a longitudinal speed control. An observer-based controller with integral action (OBCI) is designed for Linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems. To deal with system modeling inaccuracies and the perturbation/measurements noises, the controller combines in the design procedure the integral action and H∞ technique. Besides, a modified version of the well-known Young's relation is also used. Furthermore, the control design problem is transformed in a convex optimization problem through a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). The performances of the proposed approach are illustrated through experimental results.

Abstract:X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations were used to study the electronic structure of three lanthanide scandates: GdScO3,TbScO3, and DyScO3. X-ray photoelectron spectra simulated from first-principles calculations using a combination of on-site hybrid and GGA+U methods were found to be in good agreement with experimental x-ray photoelectron spectra. The hybrid method was used to model the ground state electronic structure and the GGA+U method accounted for the shift of valence state energies due to photoelectron emission via a Slater-Janak transition state approach. From these results, the lanthanide scandate valence bands were determined to be composed of Ln4f,O2p, and Sc3d states, in agreement with previous work. However, contrary to previous work the minority Ln4f states were found to be located closer to, and in some cases at, the valence band maximum. This suggests that minority Ln4f electrons may play a larger role in lanthanide scandate properties than previously thought.

Abstract:Lattice, charge, orbital, and spin are the four fundamental degrees of freedom in condensed matter, of which the interactive coupling derives tremendous novel physical phenomena, such as high-temperature superconductivity (high-T-c SC) and colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in strongly correlated electronic system. Direct experimental observation of these freedoms is essential to understanding the structure-property relationship and the physics behind it, and also indispensable for designing new materials and devices. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) integrating multiple techniques of structure imaging and spectrum analysis, is a comprehensive platform for providing structural, chemical and electronic information of materials with a high spatial resolution. Benefiting from the development of aberration correctors, STEM has taken a big breakthrough towards sub-angstrom resolution in last decade and always steps forward to improve the capability of material characterization; many improvements have been achieved in recent years, thereby giving an in-depth insight into material research. Here, we present a brief review of the recent advances of STEM by some representative examples of perovskite transition metal oxides; atomic-scale mapping of ferroelectric polarization, octahedral distortions and rotations, valence state, coordination and spin ordering are presented. We expect that this brief introduction about the current capability of STEM could facilitate the understanding of the relationship between functional properties and these fundamental degrees of freedom in complex oxides.
Dichotomy Between Frustrated Local Spins and Conjugated Electrons in a Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework.

Abstract:Dichotomy between local spins and conjugated electrons spawns various exotic physical phenomena, however, it has mostly been reported in three-dimensional (3D) inorganic systems. We show, for the first time, that a rare 2D metal-organic framework exhibits intriguing dichotomy behavior, which can be directly identified through scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). In a newly synthesized Cu-hexaiminobenzene [Cu3(HAB)2], on the one hand, the Cu2+ ions form an ideal S - 1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) kagome lattice; on the other hand, the conjugated-electrons from the organic ligands produce a frustrated πx,y model on a honeycomb lattice, giving rise to completely dispersionless energy bands around the Fermi level that favour the ferromagnetic (FM) state. Remarkably, the frustrated local spins and conjugated electrons interact through a strong FM Hund's coupling, giving rise to a wide range of intriguing quantum phases. Furthermore, we propose that this dichotomy can be directly characterized through STM/STS measurements due to its special 2D nature, which provides a unique exciting platform to investigate the dichotomy of frustrated spins and electrons in a single lattice.
Electron and Spin Delocalization in [Co6Se8(PEt3)6]0/+1 Superatoms

Abstract:Multinuclear NMR and quantum calculation reveal the atom‐like feature of a metal chalcogenide cluster, a superatom as the valence electrons/spins delocalize over the entire inorganic core and are insulated by its ligand shell. Molecular clusters can function as nanoscale atoms/superatoms, assembling into superatomic solids, a new class of solid‐state materials with designable properties through modifications on superatoms. To explore possibilities on diversifying building blocks, here we thoroughly studied one representative superatom, Co6Se8(PEt3)6. We probed its structural, electronic, and magnetic properties and revealed its detailed electronic structure as valence electrons delocalize over inorganic [Co6Se8] core while ligands function as an insulated shell. 59Co SSNMR measurements on the core and 31P, 13C on the ligands show that the neutral Co6Se8(PEt3)6 is diamagnetic and symmetric, with all ligands magnetically equivalent. Quantum computations cross‐validate NMR results and reveal degenerate delocalized HOMO orbitals, indicating aromaticity. Ligand substitution keeps the inorganic core nearly intact. After losing one electron, the unpaired electron in [Co6Se8(PEt3)6]+1 is delocalized, causing paramagnetism and a delocalized electron spin. Notably, this feature of electron/spin delocalization over a large cluster is attractive for special single‐electron devices.

Abstract:We report on an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the effect of in-situ cesium (Cs) dosing on the surface electronic structure of Sn4Sb3, a newly emerging candidate of topological semimetallic superconductor. As the chemical potential of the system increases upon Cs dosing, we observed an electronic structure evolution that features an increasing sharpness of band features as well as a momentum- and band-dependent energy shift of the bands at low binding energies. These observations go beyond a simple rigid band shift model and are manifestations of quantum confinement of electronic states near the surface due to Cs decoration. By studying the evolution of Cs 5p core level as functions of Cs dosage and photoelectron emission angle, we found Cs atoms deposit on the sample surface at low dosages and tend to intercalate underneath the surface at high dosages. This process is accompanied by a gradual suppression of a surface band splitting, an observation that can be captured by simplified first-principles calculations in both cases with the deposition/intercalation occurring on top of/underneath the first Sn–Sb bilayer. Our finding highlights an intriguing possibility of an unexpected dimensionality reduction in Sn4Sb3 caused by Cs intercalation at interstitial sites that promises its novel surface properties different from the bulk.

Abstract:We predict a new family of two-dimensional (2D) rare earth monochalcogenide materials MX (M = Sc, Y; X = S, Se, Te). Based on first-principles calculations, we confirm their stability and systematically investigate their mechanical properties. We find that these materials are metallic and interestingly, they possess nodal lines in the low-energy band structure surrounding the whole Brillouin zone, protected by nonsymmorphic crystal symmetries in the absence of spin–orbit coupling (SOC). SOC opens small energy gaps at the nodal line, except for two high-symmetry points, at which fourfold degenerate 2D spin–orbit Dirac points are obtained. We show that these topological band features are robust under uniaxial and biaxial strains, but can be lifted by the shear strain. We also investigate the optical conductivities of these materials and show that the transformation of the band structure under strain can be inferred from the optical absorption spectrum. Our work reveals a new family of 2D topological metal materials with interesting mechanical and electronic properties, which will facilitate the study of nonsymmorphic symmetry enabled nodal features in 2D.

Abstract:Ternary transition metal chalcogenides provide a rich platform to search and study intriguing electronic properties. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we investigate the electronic structure of Cu2TlX (2) (X = Se, Te), ternary transition metal chalcogenides with quasi-two-dimensional crystal structure. The band dispersions near the Fermi level are mainly contributed by the Te/Se p orbitals. According to our ab-initio calculation, the electronic structure changes from a semiconductor with indirect band gap in Cu2TlSe2 to a semimetal in Cu2TlTe2, suggesting a band-gap tunability with the composition of Se and Te. By comparing ARPES experimental data with the calculated results, we identify strong modulation of the band structure by spin-orbit coupling in the compounds. Our results provide a ternary platform to study and engineer the electronic properties of transition metal chalcogenides related to large spin-orbit coupling.
Density-functional Study of Structural and Electronic Properties in O-doped Scandium Clusters: Observation of Enhanced Magnetic Moments

Abstract:The geometries, stability, electronic properties and magnetism of ScnO clusters up to n = 12 are systematically studied using density-functional theory. For the lowest energy structures of ScnO clusters, the equilibrium site of the O atom is located in the centre of the cluster and surrounded by the Sc atoms except for n = 2, 3 and 5. The calculated results show that clusters with n = 2, 6, 9 and 12 are more stable than their respective neighbours. In addition, the ionization potential (IP), the electron affinity (EA) and the HOMO–LUMO gaps are calculated and discussed. The total magnetic moments of ScnO clusters are larger than YnO except for n = 3 and 5, and also larger than the pure Scn at n = 4 and 7–12, indicating that the O atom can dramatically modify the magnetic properties of Scn, consistent with the observation of enhanced magnetic moments in the ScnO clusters. The lowest energy structure of the Sc12O cluster is a perfect icosahedron with the largest magnetic moment, 10 μB, in the investigated clusters. In addition, we find that the total magnetic moment is not quenched in small ScnO (n = 2–12) clusters. The possible reasons for the high magnetic moments of the clusters are also discussed.

Abstract:The electronic and magnetic properties are investigated for pristine Sc2CF2, Sc2CF2-VSc (Sc2CF2 with single Sc vacancy), and Sc2CF2-dTM (Sc2CF2 doped with transitional metals TM, TM = Cr, Fe, Hf, Mn, Mo, Nb, Re, Ta, Ti, V, W, Y, or Zr) by first-principles calculation. The result indicates that Sc2CF2-dTM (TM = Ti, Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta, or W) monolayers are more stable than the other systems through the analysis of binding energies. The introduction of the Sc-vacancy and substitution doping of Hf, Mo, Nb, Re, Ta, Ti, W, or Zr atoms result in the semiconductor–metal transition for the Sc2CF2 monolayer, while the introduction of doped Cr, Fe or Y atoms doesn’t change the semiconductor character of Sc2CF2 monolayer and the introduction of doped V or Mn atoms results in the semimetal character. The substitution doping of V, Cr, Fe, or Mn atoms leads to significant magnetism. Charge transfer is further explored by the analysis of the charge density difference, the planar averaged charge density, and Bader charge. The effective mass and electron localization function are also analyzed.
