Abstract:Soft pneumatic actuators possess attributes of large deformation, high driving force and light weight in the application of soft robots and smart devices. However, most reported soft pneumatic actuators are with rigid hydraulic source such as motor driven pump, piston and pressurized reservoir. These rigid and heavy hydraulic sources limit the actuation and compliance of the soft robots. Inspired by the bladders and hydrostatic skeleton of natural creatures, we propose a soft hydraulic robot consisting of dielectric elastomer (DE) and hydrogel, exhibiting an excellent actuating performance. An inflated DE balloon functions as the soft hydraulic source, in which the pressure of the containing water can be tuned by voltage. Hydrogel chambers are connected to the DE balloon as the hydraulic actuator, deforming as a soft robotic gripper. A new analytical approach is proposed to describe the system's behaviors, which couples the electromechanical actuation of DE and the hydraulic deformation of hydrogel chamber. The proposed model is validated by good agreement between the numerical and experimental data. The proposed model could serve as a new tool for modeling and characterizing soft robots with hydraulic actuation. The working principles can guide the design and control of soft robots and smart structures.
Investigation of the State Transition and Moving Boundary in a Pneumatic–Hydraulic Coupled Dielectric Elastomer Actuator

Abstract:Compared to robots and devices made of rigid components, soft robots and flexible devices driven by soft active materials possess various advantages including high adaptability under extreme environment and compatibility with a human. Dielectric elastomer (DE) membrane, which is commonly used in building soft actuators, can achieve large actuation by the combined loadings of voltage-induced Maxwell stress and fluidic pressures (pneumatic and hydraulic pressure). This paper proposes a pneumatic–hydraulic coupled electromechanical actuator (PHCEA), which exhibits strong coupling effect of electromechanical actuation (the Maxwell stress on DE membrane), pneumatic and hydraulic pressures. Considering the moving boundary and state transition, a computational model has been developed to investigate the coupling behaviors of the PHCEA. The numerical result by this model is in accordance with the experimental measurements. The combination of experimental data and the theoretical result indicates that the state transition and moving boundary separate the potential region of electrical breakdown and mechanical damage. This model can be utilized as a practical method to characterize the performance and guide the design of soft devices. The experimental setup and computational method of the PHCEA bring new insights into the fabrication and characterization of soft robots, adaptive optics, and flexible bio-medical devices. The PHCEA possesses wide applications in underwater robots, soft muscles, and microfluidics systems. It can serve as the gas bladder of soft swimming robots, the soft actuator of hydraulic–pneumatic coupling systems, and the gas–liquid valve of flexible microfluidics systems.

Abstract:Hydrogels have diverse chemical properties and can exhibit reversibly large mechanical deformations in response to external stimuli; these characteristics suggest that hydrogels are promising materials for soft robots. However, reported actuators based on hydrogels generally suffer from slow response speed and/or poor controllability due to intrinsic material limitations and electrode fabrication technologies. Here, we report a hydrogel actuator that operates at low voltages ( 50%, energy density > 7 × 10 5 joules per cubic meter, and power density > 3 × 10 4 watts per cubic meter), surpassing existing hydrogel actuators and other types of electroactive soft actuators. The enhanced performance of our actuator is due to the formation of wrinkled nanomembrane electrodes that exhibit high conductivity and excellent mechanical deformation through capillary-assisted assembly of metal nanoparticles and deswelling-induced wrinkled structures. By applying an electric potential through the wrinkled nanomembrane electrodes that sandwich the hydrogel, we were able to trigger a reversible and substantial electroosmotic water flow inside a hydrogel film, which drove the controlled swelling of the hydrogel. The high energy efficiency and power density of our wrinkled nanomembrane electrode–induced actuator enabled the fabrication of an untethered insect-scale aquabot integrated with an on-board control unit demonstrating maneuverability with fast locomotion speed (1.02 body length per second), which occupies only 2% of the total mass of the robot.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Hydrogel actuators powered by chemical fuels are pivotal in autonomous soft robotics. Nevertheless, chemical waste accumulation caused by chemical fuels hampers the development of programmable and reusable hydrogel actuating systems. We propose the concept of ionic fuel-powered soft robotics which are constructed by programmable salt-responsive actuators and use waste-free ionic fuels. Experiments: Herein, soft hydrogel actuators were developed by orchestrating the Janus bilayer hydrogels' capacity for swelling and shrinking. Decomposable and easily removable ionic fuels were applied to power the actuators. Swelling tests were used to evaluate the deformability of the hydrogels. Tensile tests were performed to investigate the modulus of the hydrogels. The bonded interface composed of the interpenetrating polymer chains from both hydrogel layers bilayer was evidenced by the optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The ionic conductivities of solutions were determined by a conductivity meter. Furthermore, a range of biomimetic soft robots with various shapes and asymmetrical structures have been designed and fabricated to execute complex functions. Findings: The programmable actuators powered by ionic fuel exhibit adjustable bending orientations, amplitudes, and durations, along with consistent cyclic actuations enabled by replenishment of the fuel without noticeable loss in performance. Many life-like programmable soft robotic systems were designed, indicating spatiotemporally controllable functions.

Abstract:Hydrogel actuators are ultrasoft and pliable but achieving high driving speeds with large deformation and fine local controllability is difficult because the driving force originates from the external air pressure or heat, and the base material is fragile. Herein, hydrogel actuators that allow high‐speed driving and large deformation with high‐frequency local controllability while maintaining softness are fabricated based on liquid metal gel fibers as electrodes by using microfluidic technology. The Lorentz force produced by an electric current and a magnet is used for actuation control. An ultrafast response of 260.5 mm s−1 with high‐frequency controllability (6 Hz) and a large deformation of 172% with hydrogel actuation are observed. As proof of concept, moving stages, micromixers, and grippers exhibiting high speeds with high mechanical deformability while maintaining the inherent characteristics of hydrogel phases are demonstrated. Different hydrogels can be used with the proposed actuator architecture and fabrication scheme, enabling different functionalities. Herein, hydrogel actuators with high‐speed driving and large deformation with high‐frequency local controllability are developed based on liquid metal gel fibers as electrodes by using the microfluidic technology. These advantages are achieved by utilizing the Lorentz force by electromagnetism and helical structure. As proof of concept, moving stages, micromixers, and grippers are demonstrated.

Overcoming water diffusion limitations in hydrogels via microtubular graphene networks for soft actuators

Abstract:Hydrogel-based soft actuators can operate in sensitive environments, bridging the gap of rigid machines interacting with soft matter. However, while stimuli-responsive hydrogels can undergo extreme reversible volume changes of up to ~90%, water transport in hydrogel actuators is in general limited by their poroelastic behavior. For poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) the actuation performance is even further compromised by the formation of a dense skin layer. Here we show, that incorporating a bioinspired microtube graphene network into a PNIPAM matrix with a total porosity of only 5.4 % dramatically enhances actuation dynamics by up to ~400 % and actuation stress by ~4000 % without sacrificing the mechanical stability, overcoming the water transport limitations. The graphene network provides both untethered light-controlled and electrically-powered actuation. We anticipate that the concept provides a versatile platform for enhancing the functionality of soft matter by combining responsive and two-dimensional materials, paving the way towards designing soft intelligent matter.

Abstract:Although extensive attention is focused on layered hydrogel actuators, realizing both fast bending and recovery in short time along with multidirectional space deformation is still a challenge. Herein, novel thermoresponsive hydrogel/elastomer composite actuators are fabricated by simultaneous growth and interface bonding of an ultrathin poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)/PAA hydrogel layer on the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) sheet using the surface catalytically initiated radical polymerization method. The growing hydrogel layer shows a strong interface combination force of similar to 142 N m(-1) against the PDMS sheet. The composite actuators show fast, reversible, and diverse responsive bending/recovery behavior in response to temperature change of the water bath. In a typical case, the actuator demonstrates both fast responsive bending from 0 to 500 degrees (50 degrees C underwater) and fast deformation recovery from 500 to 0 degrees (20 degrees C underwater) in less than 7 s. Such a fast responsive behavior can be attributed to the ultrathin thickness (mu m) of the hydrogel layer. Based on this advantage, our actuators can generate directional movement as a soft robot on the ratchet surface upon applying alternating temperature field. Furthermore, novel asymmetric actuators can be easily developed by the selective growth of the hydrogel layer onto each side of the structured PDMS sheet, which can achieve a bidirectional bending and recovery behavior along with a spatial transportation of cargos.
[Intraoperative coronary spasm in patients without a history of anginal chest pain].

Abstract:We report three cases of intraoperative coronary spasm that developed during non-cardiac surgical procedures. None of the patients had a history of anginal chest pain. The presumed contributing factors were: 1) suction of the trachea during general anesthesia, 2) hyperventilation and hypotension during induction of general anesthesia, and 3) hyperventilation during neuroanesthesia. Coronary vasodilators were administered and all cases recovered promptly without any clinical sequelae. A review of the literature reveals that the majority of patients who developed intraoperative coronary spasm had no history of anginal chest pain. Some of common intraoperative conditions such as hyperventilation, hypotension, and inadequate depth of anesthesia, were reported to be potent precipitating factors for coronary spasm. In recent years, a larger proportion of surgical patients have coronary risk factors. Careful anesthetic management is required to prevent intraoperative coronary spasm even in patients without a history of coronary artery disease.

Abstract:Traditional underwater rigid robots have some shortcomings that limit their applications in the ocean. In contrast, because of their inherent flexibility, soft robots, which have gained popularity recently, offer greater adaptability, efficiency, and safety than rigid robots. Among them, the soft actuator is the core component to power the soft robot. Here, we propose a class of soft electrohydraulic bending actuators suitable for underwater robots, which realize the bending motion of the actuator by squeezing the working liquid with an electric field. The actuator consists of a silicone rubber film, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films, soft electrodes, silicone oils, an acrylic frame, and a soft flipper. When a square wave voltage is applied, the actuator can generate continuous flapping motions. By mimicking Haliclystus auricula, we designed an underwater robot based on six soft electrohydraulic bending actuators and constructed a mechanical model of the robot. Additionally, a high-voltage square wave circuit board was created to achieve the robot's untethered motions and remote control using a smart phone via WiFi. The test results show that 1 Hz was the robot's ideal driving frequency, and the maximum horizontal swimming speed of the robot was 7.3 mm/s.

Abstract:Hydrogel actuators with anisotropic microstructure, photothermal shape‐change, and photocatalytic activity are prepared from composites of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) and Au/g‐C3N4 nanoparticles. A variety of light‐fueled controllable shape‐change is elicited, applicable to soft robotics. The photothermal deformation of hydrogel constructs is utilized to maximize their energy harvesting capability and photocatalytic hydrogen generation. Hydrogel actuators have shown great promise in underwater robotic applications as they can generate controllable shape transformations upon stimulation due to their ability to absorb and release water reversibly. Herein, a photoresponsive anisotropic hydrogel actuator is developed from poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and gold‐decorated carbon nitride (Au/g‐C3N4) nanoparticles. Carbon nitride nanoparticles endow hydrogel actuators with photocatalytic properties, while their reorientation and mobility driven by the electrical field provide anisotropic properties to the surrounding network. A variety of light‐fueled soft robotic functionalities including controllable and programmable shape‐change, gripping, and locomotion is elicited. A responsive flower‐like photocatalytic reactor is also fabricated, for water splitting, which maximizes its energy‐harvesting efficiency, that is, hydrogen generation rate of 1061.82 μmol g−1 h−1, and the apparent quantum yield of 8.55% at 400 nm, by facing its light‐receiving area adaptively towards the light. The synergy between photoactive and photocatalytic properties of this hydrogel portrays a new perspective for the design of underwater robotic and photocatalytic devices.

Abstract:Bioinspired soft actuators, capable of undergoing shape deformation in response to external triggers, hold great potential in fields such as soft robotics, artificial muscles, drug delivery, and smart switches. However, their widespread application is hindered by limitations in responsiveness, durability, and complex fabrication processes. In this study, we propose a new approach to tackle these challenges by developing a single-layer soft actuator that responds to multiple stimuli using a straightforward solution-casting method. This actuator comprises bio-polymer gelatin, bio-compatible PEDOT:PSS, and iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles. Our actuator exhibits responsiveness to a range of organic solvent vapors, including water vapor, light, and magnetic fields. Notably, it exhibits rapid and reversible bending in distinct directions in response to different vapors, bending upwards in the presence of water vapor and downwards in the presence of alcohol vapor. Moreover, exposure to infrared (IR) light induces an instantaneous bending toward the light source. The incorporation of magnet-responsive Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles induces multi-functionality in the actuator. The actuation characteristics of the actuator are controlled by leveraging its responsiveness to dual stimuli, such as water vapor and magnetic fields, as well as light and magnetic fields. For the proof of concept, we showcase several potential applications of our multi-stimuli responsive soft actuator, including magnet-triggered electrical switches, cargo transportation, soft grippers, targeted drug delivery, energy harvesting, and bio-mimicry.

Abstract:Rigid robots can be precise but struggle in environments where compliance, robustness to disturbances, or energy efficiency is crucial. This has led researchers to develop biomimetic robots incorporating soft artificial muscles. Electrohydraulic actuators are promising artificial muscles that perform comparably to mammalian muscles in speed and power density. However, their operation requires several thousand volts. The high voltage leads to bulky and inefficient driving electronics. Here, we present hydraulically amplified low-voltage electrostatic (HALVE) actuators that match mammalian skeletal muscles in average power density (50.5 watts per kilogram) and peak strain rate (971% per second) at a 4.9 times lower driving voltage (1100 volts) compared to the state of the art. HALVE actuators are safe to touch, are waterproof, and exhibit self-clearing properties. We characterize, model, and validate key performance metrics of our actuator. Last, we demonstrate the utility of HALVE actuators on a robotic gripper and a soft robotic swimmer.

An electropermanent magnet valve for the onboard control of multi-degree of freedom pneumatic soft robots

Abstract:To achieve coordinated functions, fluidic soft robots typically rely on multiple input lines for the independent inflation and deflation of each actuator. Fluidic actuators are controlled by rigid electronic pneumatic valves, restricting the mobility and compliance of the soft robot. Recent developments in soft valve designs have shown the potential to achieve a more integrated robotic system, but are limited by high energy consumption and slow response time. In this work, we present an electropermanent magnet (EPM) valve for electronic control of pneumatic soft actuators that is activated through microsecond electronic pulses. The valve incorporates a thin channel made from thermoplastic films. The proposed valve (3 × 3 × 0.8 cm, 2.9 g) can block pressure up to 146 kPa and negative pressures up to -100 kPa with a response time of less than 1 s. Using the EPM valves, we demonstrate the ability to switch between multiple operation sequences in real time through the control of a six-DoF robot capable of grasping and hopping with a single pressure input. Our proposed onboard control strategy simplifies the operation of multi-pressure systems, enabling the development of dynamically programmable soft fluid-driven robots that are versatile in responding to different tasks.

Abstract:Soft actuators are in high demand for applications such as sensors, soft robotics, biomimetic devices, and actuators that can respond to different energies have enormous advantages. The soft actuators that can respond to diverse energy sources are greatly advantageous. In this study, we developed a PDMS ion gel/graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide bilayer actuator, with its performance elevated by infusing ionic liquid into PDMS. The fabricated bilayer actuator exhibits rapid response and significant deformation even under minimal energy stimuli. Specifically, it can achieve bend angles of 43°, 53°, and 63°within 2 s when exposed to voltage, light, and humidity variations, respectively. Building on this technology, we engineered a mechanical gripper that adeptly holding an object 52 times heavier than the total mass of the actuators used, showcasing the actuator's commendable practical application potential. Moreover, the actuator is robust, maintaining its deformation prowess even after 1000 operational cycles.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive hydrogel actuators have promising applications in various fields. However, the typical hydrogel actuation relies on the swelling and de-swelling process caused by osmotic-pressure changes, which is slow and normally requires the presence of water environment. Herein, we report a light-powered in-air hydrogel actuator with remarkable performances, including ultrafast motion speed (up to 1.6 m/s), rapid response (as fast as 800 ms) and high jumping height (~15 cm). The hydrogel is operated based on a fundamentally different mechanism that harnesses the synergetic interactions between the binary constituent parts, i.e. the elasticity of the poly(sodium acrylate) hydrogel, and the bubble caused by the photothermal effect of the embedded magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. The current hydrogel actuator exhibits controlled motion velocity and direction, making it promising for a wide range of mobile robotics, soft robotics, sensors, controlled drug delivery and other miniature device applications.

Abstract:Electroactive polymers (EAPs), especially dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), belong to a very promising and emerging class of functional materials. While DEAs are mostly utilized to rely on carbon-based electrodes, there are certain shortcomings of the use of carbon electrodes in the field of soft robotics. In this work we present a fish-like bending structure to serve as possible propulsion element, completely avoiding carbon-based electrodes. The presented robot is moving under water, using a particularly tailored conductive hydrogel as inner electrode and a highly anisotropic textile material to manipulate the bending behavior of the robot. The charge separation to drive two DEAs on the outsides of the robot is provided by the conductive hydrogel while the surrounding water serves as counter electrode. To characterize the hydrogel, tensile tests and impedance spectroscopy are used as measurement methods of choice. The performance of the robot was evaluated using a digital image correlation (DIC) measurement for its bending deflections under water. The developed fish-like robot was able to perform a dynamic bending movement, based on a tri-stable actuator setup. The performed measurements underpin the sufficient characteristics for an underwater application of conductive hydrogel electrodes as well as the applicability of the robotic concept for under water actuations.

Abstract:Soft actuators based on liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are captivating significant interest because of their unique properties combining the programmable liquid crystalline molecular order and elasticity of polymeric materials. For practical applications, the ability to perform multimodal shape changes in a single LCE actuator at a subsecond level is a bottleneck. Here, we fabricate a monodomain LCE powered by electrostatic force, which enables fast multidirectional bending, oscillation, rotation, and complex actuation with a high degree of freedom. By tuning the dielectric constant and resistivity in LCE gels, a complete cycle of oscillation and rotation only takes 0.1 s. In addition, monodomain actuators exhibit anisotropic actuation behaviors that promise a more complex deployment in a potential electromechanical system. The presented study will pave the way for electrostatically controllable isothermal manipulation for a fast and multimode soft actuator.
