Abstract:Thermodynamic behavior investigations on nanomaterials are of great scientific interest and possess technological implications for advancing nanoscience and nanotechnology. However, nanoscale thermodynamic studies on ceramic semiconductors are faced with great challenges due to their thermostability, and there lacks a percipient understanding of their atomistic thermal behaviors. Here, the atomic‐scale mechanism of the melting and coalescence processes of binary semiconductors, including rutile TiO2(R) and SnSe nanostructures, via real‐time electron beam (e‐beam) irradiation is reported. Under the e‐beam, the inelastic electron‐matter interactions and the low thermal conductivity of the samples cause a local temperature increase. The in situ melting process is recorded via high‐resolution TEM imaging, which exclusively shows a specific planar melting order of the (001), (011), and (100) for TiO2(R). This measurement provides direct evidence that matches the surface energy differences predicted by existing theoretical calculations and experiments. A similar phenomenon is induced and observed on SnSe, which derives a particular melting order of (210), (211), and (002). Furthermore, the in situ melting and coalescence analysis of ultrafine TiO2(R) nanoparticles suggests surface atom transfer and recrystallization as observed. The demonstration of e‐beam directed shape formation and tailoring reveals the possibility for nano/microscale processing of ceramic nanostructures, which are otherwise considered chemically stable and mechanically robust.

Abstract:Understanding the chemomechanical behaviors of electrodes, particularly at electrode/electrolyte interfaces, is critical for improving the performance of all-solid-state batteries. However, due to the instability of electrolyte materials under ambient conditions, such characterizations are challenging, particularly for sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries. Herein, by combining time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) and in-SEM nanoindentation measurements, a systematic quantitative investigation of the chemomechanical behaviors of pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO)/Li6PS5Cl composite cathodes is carried out. Chemical and quantitative mechanical information on the composite cathode was collected with high spatial resolution after developing and implementing an air-free characterization protocol. By directly connecting the Young’s modulus and hardness with the Li distribution in the composite cathode, a comprehensive chemomechanical mapping of the PTO/Li6PS5Cl composite cathode has been established. This work improves our knowledge of the critical chemomechanical phenomena that occur at the cathode/electrolyte interfaces in all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Evaluating ion-conductive solid electrolytes (SEs) accurately is crucial for advancing solid-state battery technology. Scanning/transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM) is a valuable technique for examining the local characteristics of battery materials. However, the tolerance of SEs to high-energy electron beams is notably lower than that of electrode active materials, because SEs generally have low electron conductivity. Here, we propose a specialized coating technique for TEM samples, termed "nano-shield," which enables stable and accurate observation of their micro-/nano-structures. Nano-shield consists of a dual-layer coating combining an amorphous insulating layer of aluminum oxide (AlO x ) with a conductive carbon (C) film. The AlO x layer blocks ion diffusion in the TEM samples, and the C layer minimizes electron charging during electron-beam irradiation. By applying a nano-shield, we successfully visualized the atomic structures of a lithium-ion-conductive SE, Li 1.3 Al 0.3 T 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP), by using STEM at room temperature. Additionally, we performed a precise elemental analysis of a sodium-ion-conductive SE, Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 (NZSP), via STEM equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDS). Our findings demonstrate that nano-shield enhances the reliability of S/TEM observations of SEs and sheds light on its underlying protective mechanisms.

High-quality TEM specimen preparation for lithium-ion conducting solid electrolytes by low-energy ion milling

Abstract:Focused ion beam (FIB) is a widely used method to prepare transmission electron microscopy (TEM) specimen from bulk materials. However, the surface amorphous layer induced by ion beam is an obstacle to obtain high-quality atomic-scale images for quantitative analysis, especially for the analysis of light elements such as lithium in lithium-ion conducting solid electrolytes. Here, taking lithium-ion conducting solid electrolyte materials as an example, the advantages and disadvantages of applying low-energy Ar+ ion for fine milling after FIB are investigated. Combining Monte-Carlo simulations with ion milling experiments, the milling parameters are evaluated and discussed in detail. With optimized parameters, TEM specimens with less beam damage and thinner amorphous layer were prepared, enabling the acquisition of high-quality atomic-scale images. Furthermore, low-energy Ar+ ion milling is also able to remove hydrocarbon contamination formed during the electron beam illumination inside the microscope, making the contaminated TEM specimens reusable.

Abstract:Surface passivation has become a routine strategy of design to mitigate the chemomechanical degradation of high-capacity electrodes by regulating the electrochemical process of lithiation and managing the associated deformation dynamics. Oxides are the prevalent materials used for surface coating. Lithiation of SiO2 leads to drastic changes in its electro-chemo-mechanical properties from an electronic insulator and a brittle material in its pure form to a conductor and a material sustainable of large deformation in the lithiated form. We synthesized SiO2-coated SiC nanowires that allow us to focus on the lithiation behavior of the sub-10 nm SiO2 thin coating. We systematically investigate the structural evolution, the electronic conduction and ionic transport properties, and the deformation pattern of lithiated SiO2 through coordinated in situ transmission electron microcopy experiments, first-principles computation, and continuum theories. We observe the stress-mediated reaction that induces inhomogeneous growth of SiO2. The results provide fundamental perspectives on the chemomechanical behaviors of oxides used in the surface coating of Li-ion technologies.

Abstract:Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) is a valuable tool recently proposed to investigate battery electrodes. Despite being employed for Li-based battery materials, cryo-TEM measurements for Na-based electrochemical energy storage systems are not commonly reported. In particular, elucidating the chemical and morphological behavior of the Na-metal electrode in contact with a non-aqueous liquid electrolyte solution could provide useful insights that may lead to a better understanding of metal cells during operation. Here, using cryo-TEM, we investigate the effect of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) additive on the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) structure of a Na-metal electrode. Without FEC, the NaPF6-containing carbonate-based electrolyte reacts with the metal electrode to produce an unstable SEI, rich in Na2CO3 and Na3PO4, which constantly consumes the sodium reservoir of the cell during cycling. When FEC is used, the Na-metal electrode forms a multilayer SEI structure comprising an outer NaF-rich amorphous phase and an inner Na3PO4 phase. This layered structure stabilizes the SEI and prevents further reactions between the electrolyte and the Na metal.

Abstract:Understanding the reaction processes of electrode and electrolyte materials is important for achieving high‐performance lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). Currently, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) can readily characterize the structural and chemical features of these materials from the micrometer scale to the atomic scale. In situ (S)TEM can further monitor their non‐ or quasi‐equilibrated states in real time. Here, the recent progress in unraveling the crystal and electronic structures of the electrode and solid‐electrolyte materials using ex situ and in situ (S)TEM is reviewed. Three fundamental functions, including imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopy, are jointly used to decipher the configuration of the defects and ordering, the variations near the surfaces and across the interfaces, and the evolution of the coexisting phases. Abstract:The fabrication of micro- and nano-scale silicon electronic devices requires precision lithography and controlled processing to ensure that the electronic properties of the device are optimized. Importantly, the Si-SiO2 interface plays a crucial role in defining these properties. While transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can be used to observe the device architecture, substrate / contact crystallinity and interfacial roughness, the preparation and isolation of the device active area is problematic. In this work, we describe the use of focussed ion beam technologies to isolate and trench-cut targeted device structures for subsequent TEM analysis. Architectures studied include radio frequency, single electron transistors and electrically detected, magnetic resonance devices that have also undergone ion implantation, rapid thermal and forming gas anneals.
Visualization of Colloidal Nanocrystal Formation and Electrode-Electrolyte Interfaces in Liquids Using TEM

Abstract:Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has become a powerful analytical tool for addressing unique scientific problems in chemical sciences as well as in materials sciences and other disciplines. There has been a lot of recent interest in the development and applications of liquid phase environmental TEM. In this Account, we review the development and applications of liquid cell TEM for the study of dynamic phenomena at liquid-solid interfaces, focusing on two areas: (1) nucleation, growth, and self-assembly of colloidal nanocrystals and (2) electrode-electrolyte interfaces during charge and discharge processes. We highlight the achievements and progress that have been made in these two topical areas of our studies. For example, tracking single platinum particle growth trajectories revealed that two different pathways of growth, either by monomer attachment or coalescence between nanoparticles, led to the same particle size. With the improved spatial resolution and fast electron detection, we were able to trace individual facet development during platinum nanocube platinum nanocube growth. The results showed that different from the surface energy minimization rule prediction, the growth rates of all low-energy facets, such as {100}, {110}, and {111}, were similar. The {100} facets stopped growth early, and the continuous growth of the rest facets resulted in a nanocube. Density functional theory calculations showed that the amine ligands with low mobility on the {100} facets blocked the further growth of the facets. The effect of the ligand on nanoparticle shape evolution were further studied systematically using a Pt-Fe nanoparticle system by changing the oleylamine concentration. With 20%, 30%, or 50% oleylamine, Pt-Fe nanowires or nanoparticles with different morphologies and stabilities were achieved. Real-time imaging of nanoparticles in solution also enabled the study of interactions between nanoparticles during self-assembly. We further compared the study of noble-metal nanoparticles and transition-metal oxides in a liquid cell to elucidate the nanoparticle formation mechanisms. In the second part of this Account, we review the study of electrolyte-electrode interfaces by the development of electrochemical liquid cell TEM. The formation of single-crystalline Pb dendrites from polycrystalline branches and Li dendrite growth in a commercial electrolyte for Li ion batteries were observed. We also studied lithiation reactions of MoS2 and Au electrodes. MoS2 nanoflakes on the Ti electrode underwent irreversible decomposition, resulting in the vanishing of the MoS2 active nanoflakes. More detailed study using nanobeam diffraction indicated that the MoS2 nanoflakes were broken down into small nanoparticles as a result of the fast discharge. For the lithiation of Au electrodes, three distinct types of morphology changes during reactions were revealed, including gradual dissolution, explosive reaction, and local expansion/shrinkage. Additionally, we studied electrolyte decomposition reactions such as bubble formation and solid electrolyte interphase formation. At the end, our perspective on the challenges and opportunities in the applications of liquid phase environmental TEM for the study of liquid chemical reactions is provided.

Abstract:In situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization techniques provide valuable information on structure–property correlations to understand the behavior of materials at the nanoscale. However, understanding nanoscale structures and their interaction with the electron beam is pivotal for the reliable interpretation of in situ / ex situ TEM studies. Here, we report that oxides commonly used in nanoelectronic applications, such as transistor gate oxides or memristive devices, are prone to electron beam induced damage that causes small structural changes even under very low dose conditions, eventually changing their electrical properties as examined via in situ measurements. In this work, silicon, titanium, and niobium oxide thin films are used for in situ TEM electrical characterization studies. The electron beam induced reduction of the oxides turns these insulators into conductors. The conductivity change is reversible by exposure to air, supporting the idea of electron beam reduction of oxides as primary damage mechanism. Through these measurements we propose a limit for the critical dose to be considered for in situ scanning electron microscopy and TEM characterization studies.

Abstract:'Anode-free' or, more fittingly, metal reservoir-free cells could drastically improve current solid-state battery technology by achieving higher energy density, improving safety and simplifying manufacturing. Various strategies have been reported so far to control the morphology of electrodeposited alkali metal films to be homogeneous and dense, but until now, the microstructure of electrodeposited alkali metal is unknown, and a suitable characterization route is yet to be identified. Here we establish a reproducible protocol for characterizing the size and orientation of metal grains in differently processed lithium and sodium samples by a combination of focused ion beam and electron backscatter diffraction. Electrodeposited films at Cu|Li6.5Ta0.5La3Zr1.5O12, steel|Li6PS5Cl and Al|Na3.4Zr2Si2.4P0.6O12 interfaces were characterized. The analyses show large grain sizes (>100 µm) within these films and a preferential orientation of grain boundaries. Furthermore, metal growth and dissolution were investigated using in situ electron backscatter diffraction, showing a dynamic grain coarsening during electrodeposition and pore formation within grains during dissolution. Our methodology and results deepen the research field for the improvement of solid-state battery performance through a characterization of the alkali metal microstructure.
Challenges and Applications to Operando and In Situ TEM Imaging and Spectroscopic Capabilities in a Cryogenic Temperature Range

Abstract:ConspectusIn this Account, we describe the challenges and promising applications of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging and spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures. Our work focuses on two areas of application: the delay of electron-beam-induced degradation and following low-temperature phenomena in a continuous and variable temperature range. For the former, we present a study of LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 lithium ion battery cathode material that undergoes electron beam-induced degradation when studied at room temperature by TEM. Cryogenic imaging reveals the true structure of LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 nanoparticles in their discharged state. Improved stability under electron beam irradiation was confirmed by following the evolution of the O K-edge fine structure by electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate that the effect of radiation damage on discharged LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 was previously underestimated and that atomic-resolution imaging at cryogenic temperature has a potential to be generalized to most of the Li-based materials and beyond. For the latter, we present two studies in the imaging of low-temperature phenomena on the local scale, namely, the evolution of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic domains walls, in BaTiO3 and Y3Fe5O12 systems, respectively, in a continuous and variable temperature range. Continuous imaging of the phase transition in BaTiO3, a prototypical ferroelectric system, from the low-temperature orthorhombic phase continuously up to the centrosymmetric high-temperature phase is shown to be possible inside a TEM. Similarly, the propagation of domain walls in Y3Fe5O12, a magnetic insulator, is studied from ∼120 to ∼400 K and combined with the application of a magnetic field and electrical current pulses to mimic the operando conditions as in domain wall memory and logic devices for information technology. Such studies are promising for studying the pinning of the ferroelectric and magnetic domains versus temperature, spin-polarized current, and externally applied magnetic field to better manipulate the domain walls. The capability of combining operando TEM stimuli such as current, voltage, and/or magnetic field with in situ TEM imaging in a continuous cryogenic temperature range will allow the uncovering of fundamental phenomena on the nanometer scale. These studies were made possible using a MEMS-based TEM holder that allowed an electron-transparent sample to be transferred and electrically contacted on a MEMS chip. The six-contact double-tilt holder allows the alignment of the specimen into its zone axis while simultaneously using four electrical contacts to regulate the temperature and two contacts to apply the electrical stimuli, i.e., operando TEM imaging. This Account leads to the demonstration of (i) the high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy of nanoparticles oriented in the desired [110] zone-axis direction at cryogenic temperatures to mitigate the electron beam degradation, (ii) imaging of low-temperature transitions with accurate and continuous control of the temperature that allowed single-frame observation of the presence of both the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases in the BaTiO3 system, and (iii) magnetic domain wall propagation as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and current pulses (100 ns with a 100 kHz repetition rate) in the Y3Fe5O12 system.

Abstract:High-concentrated non-flammable electrolytes (HCNFE) in lithium metal batteries prevent thermal runaway accidents, but the microstructure of their solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) remains largely unexplored, due to the lack of direct imaging tools. Herein, cryo-HRTEM is applied to directly visualize the native state of SEI at the atomic scale. In HCNFE, SEI has a uniform laminated crystalline-amorphous structure that can prevent further reaction between the electrolyte and lithium. The inorganic SEI component, Li2 S2 O7 , is precisely identified by cryo-HRTEM. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the final Li2 S2 O7 phase has suitable natural transmission channels for Li-ion diffusion and excellent ionic conductivity of 1.2 × 10-5 S cm-1 .

Abstract:Advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and its associated instruments have made significant contributions to the characterization of all-solid-state (ASS) Li batteries, as these tools provide localized information on the structure, morphology, chemistry, and electronic state of electrodes, electrolytes, and their interfaces at the nano- and atomic scale. Furthermore, the rapid development of in situ techniques has enabled a deep understanding of interfacial dynamic behavior and heterogeneous characteristics during the cycling process. However, due to the beam-sensitive nature of light elements in the interphases, e.g., Li and O, thorough and reliable studies of the interfacial structure and chemistry at an ultrahigh spatial resolution without beam damage is still a formidable challenge. Herein, the following points are discussed: (1) the recent contributions of advanced STEM to the study of ASS Li batteries; (2) current challenges associated with using this method; and (3) potential opportunities for combining cryo-electron microscopy and the STEM phase contrast imaging techniques.
Liquid Phase Scanning Electron Microscopy: A New Approach to Investigate Lithium Dendrite Formation in Liquid Electrolytes

Abstract:Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a widely used tool for investigating the surface morphology of materials with a reasonable spatial resolution. Comparing with the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the beam-induced damage is much less in a SEM. With a proper scan rate, some relatively slow dynamic process, such as the lithium dendrite growth, can be observed in real time using a SEM. To mimic the real environment of a lithium battery, we designed a micro-liquid-electrochemical cell in which organic electrolytes could be introduced. We investigated the lithium deposition and dissolution processes in such a cell using electrolytes with different additives, and studied their effects on suppressing dendrite growth during lithium deposition. The results should shed light on developing more stable batteries using lithium metal as the anode material.

Abstract:Solid‐state electrolytes have great potential in solving the intrinsic safety issues of conventional lithium‐ion batteries utilizing liquid electrolytes, and there is a tremendous effort in developing solid‐state electrolytes with improved ionic conductivity via microstructure engineering spanning multiple length scales. Nevertheless, there still lacks an effective method to probe the local ionic conductivity at the nanoscale with sufficient resolution, and thus how the microstructure impacts macroscopic ionic conductivity of solid‐state electrolytes remains inadequately understood. Here, the newly developed sequential excitation (SE) electrochemical strain microscopy is applied to spatially resolve local electrochemical processes at the nanoscale, unraveling the ionic dynamics of grain boundary in Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 solid‐state electrolytes that correlate well with macroscopic impedance analysis. The high‐conductivity sample possesses comparable ionic dynamics at grain boundary and within grain interior, while low‐conductivity sample exhibits much higher resistance at the grain boundary, even though the conductivity of its grain interior is comparable to high‐conductivity sample. The study thus provides direct experimental evidence on the bottlenecking grain boundaries in ionic conduction, and offers a powerful tool to study local ionic dynamics at the nanoscale in one‐to‐one correspondence to the microstructure features.

Abstract:Liquid phase (or liquid cell) transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has become a powerful platform for in situ investigation of various chemical processes at the nanometer or atomic level. The electron beam for imaging can also induce perturbation to the chemical processes. Thus, it has been a concern that the observed phenomena in a liquid cell could deviate from the real-world processes. Strategies have been developed to overcome the electron-beam-induced issues. This article provides an overview of the electron-beam effects, and discusses various strategies in liquid cell TEM study of nucleation, growth, and self-assembly of nanoscale materials, where an electron beam is often used to initiate the reactions, and highly electron-beam-sensitive electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:We report a method for in situ atomic-scale observation of electrochemical delithiation in a working all-solid-state battery using a state-of-the-art chip based in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) holder and focused ion beam milling to prepare an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery sample. A battery consisting of LiCoO2 cathode, LLZO solid state electrolyte and gold anode was constructed, delithiated and observed in an aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope at atomic scale. We found that the pristine single crystal LiCoO2 became nanosized polycrystal connected by coherent twin boundaries and antiphase domain boundaries after high voltage delithiation. This is different from liquid electrolyte batteries, where a series of phase transitions take place at LiCoO2 cathode during delithiation. Both grain boundaries become more energy favorable along with extraction of lithium ions through theoretical calculation. We also proposed a lithium migration pathway before and after polycrystallization. This new methodology could stimulate atomic scale in situ scanning/TEM studies of battery materials and provide important mechanistic insight for designing better all-solid-state battery.
