Abstract:A pilot-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) integrated with a one-stage partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) reactor was operated for the treatment of municipal wastewater (MWW) at seasonal temperatures of 15-25 °C. The removal efficiencies of COD and total nitrogen (TN) were always > 90% and > 75% respectively. The methanogenesis and PN/A were identified as the primary removal pathways of COD and TN, respectively, and were suppressed at low temperatures. With the temperature dropped from 25 °C to 20 °C to 15 °C, the methane-accounted COD decreased from 63.1% to 59.6% to 48.4%, and the PN/A-accounted TN decreased from 58.1% to 51.7% to 45.3%. The AnMBR and PN/A mutually complement each other in this combined process, as the AnMBR removed 8.5%-16.1% of TN by sludge entrainment and the PN/A reactor removed 2.6%-3.4% of COD by denitrification and aerobic oxidation. These results highlighted the strong feasibility of applying the AnMBR-PN/A process to the treatment of MWW in temperate climate.

Nutrients removal from low C/N actual municipal wastewater by partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) coupling with a step-feed anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A/A/O) system

Abstract:In this study, a novel combined strategy was successfully established by partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) within a step-feed A/A/O process integrated with fixed-biocarriers to treat municipal sewage for 200 days. The excellent nutrients removal performance of this system compared with national level of discharging standard were achieved: low total inorganic nitrogen (7.1 mg/L) and phosphorus (0.3 mg/L) in the effluent with the influent (51.1 and 4.2 mg/L) at C/N ratios of 3.4 ± 0.5, mainly attributed to the stable PN (oxic zone) and subsequently anammox effect (anoxic zone). Nitrogen mass balance indicated that anammox contribution in anoxic zones to nitrogen loss could be up to 42% at stable phase. Therefore, aeration and carbon cost could be greatly reduced under low DO, low C/N and aerobic hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 7.4 h condition. The low DO and anammox bacteria retention in anoxic chambers promoted the washout of NOB and combination of anammox and partial nitritation process. During long-term operation, the activity of AOB effectively maintained while that of NOB drastically reduced to 0.1 mg N / g MLSS / h resulting in high and stable nitrite accumulation ratios (about 90%). The achievement of partial nitritation was mainly due to low DO (0.4–0.5 mg/L) and effective retention of anammox bacteria even with a low temperature (14.5 °C). Notedly, anammox activity gradually increased both on the biocarriers and in the flocs while a higher anammox abundance was observed on the biocarriers (2.48%) than that in suspend flocs (0.03%). As above, this study indicated that the novel combined strategies could be applicable to mainstream anammox, and a pilot-scale reactor will be established to verify and promote the industrial application of mainstream anammox.

Abstract:Conventional two stages partial nitritation - anammox (C-PN-A) process is an energy-efficient and sustainable technology for sludge anaerobic reject water treatment, which has usually reported with system instability and limited total nitrogen removal rate (TNRR). Overgrowth of flocculent heterotrophic bacteria in Anammox stage induced negative effects on anammox activity. To prevent direct transportation of flocculent heterotrophic bacteria from PN stage to Anammox stage, novel partial nitritation - microfiltration - anammox (PN-MF-A) process was proposed in this research. More stabilized operation was achieved for PN-MF-A process with higher TNRR of 0.80–0.96 kgN/(m3·d) than C-PN-A of 0.53–0.57 kgN/(m3·d). There was a great deal of overlaps in genus level of microbial community structure between floc sludge in PN and Anammox reactor, indicating flocculent microorganism in anammox reactor came from PN reactor, which probably could survive both in aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The in-between membrane of PN-MF-A process removed nearly 100% suspended solid (SS) and 15.31–37.83% COD, accordingly preventing the microorganism transfer from PN stage to Anammox stage and reducing the inhibitory effects of the anaerobic reject water on the anammox. Although same inoculum was used for the two sets anammox reactors, genus level shift was observed that Candidatus Brocadia (abundance 10%) in C-PN-A and Candidatus Kuenenia (1.4%) in PN-MF-A process. Higher anammox activity in PN-MF-A process was illustrated with less abundance (1.4%) than C-PN-A process. This research initially illustrated feasibility and advantages of proposed novel PN-MF-A process for high inhibitory reject water treatment.

Abstract:The combination of sewage anaerobic treatment and partial nitritation/anammox process (PN/A) can make wastewater treatment plants energetically self-sufficient. However, PN/A application has been a challenge in low-nitrogen wastewaters and it is little explored in anaerobically pretreated domestic sewage, as well as aeration strategies and the PN/A feasibility at ambient temperature. This study investigated PN/A in a sequential batch reactor (SBR) treating real anaerobically pretreated domestic sewage. After the startup, SBR was fed with real wastewater and operated at 35°C and at ambient temperature (20–31°C) without total nitrogen (TN) removal decrease (71 ± 8 and 75 ± 6%, respectively). The median ammonium and TN removals were 68 ± 21 and 59 ± 9%, respectively with 7 min on/14 min off strategy, which represents 12.3 ± 4.2 mg L −1 N-NH 4 + effluent, which is lower than Brazilian discharge limits. The qPCR results showed anammox abundance in the range of 10 8 –10 9 n° copies gVSS −1 . Thus, results were very promising and showed the feasibility of the PN/A process for treating real anaerobically pretreated domestic sewage at ambient temperature.

Abstract:Anammox process is a cost-effective solution for nitrogen removal, whereas unsatisfactory effluent with nitrate accumulation is usually achieved in treating domestic sewage, owning to the unwanted prevalence of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and the intrinsic nitrate production by anammox bacteria. Herein, a pilot-scale system integrating Partial Nitritation and simultaneous Anammox, Denitrification and Sludge Fermentation (PN + ADSF) process was developed to treat real municipal wastewater. In this process, PN was accomplished in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using the strategy of intermittent hydroxylamine addition, while ADSF coupling anammox and heterotrophic denitrification was conducted in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) to further remove nitrogen. The pilot-scale system achieved total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) concentrations of 10.0 mg N/L in effluent and sludge reduction efficiency of 42.3% simultaneously. The characterization on microbial communities revealed that Candidatus Kuenenia and Thauera were the dominant functional bacteria for anammox and denitrification, respectively. Supported by the slow-release carbon sources from sludge fermentation, heterotrophic denitrification contributed to about 28% of nitrogen removed from the UASB, while anammox played a more important role in nitrogen removal. The pilot-scale demonstration confirmed that the PN + ADSF process is technically feasible for enhanced nitrogen removal and sludge reduction.

Abstract:Two-stage Partial nitritation/Anammox (PN/A) was firstly performed for recalcitrant organics (RO)-rich thermal hydrolysis pretreated anaerobic digestion (THP-AD) centrate treatment with municipal wastewater (MW) as co-substrate. Results indicated the inhibitory effects of RO was alleviated and high nitrate issue in PN/A effluent was addressed by cotreatment strategy. Stable PN with nitrite accumulation ratio of 95% and N removal efficiency of 97.1% were well maintained at MW of 80%. Nevertheless, nitrate accumulation and anammox activity loss were observed with lowering MW proportions owing to the weakened denitrification activity and aggravated inhibitory effect. Microbial analysis revealed Nitrosomonas was the major ammonium oxidizing bacteria and the ideal PN performance was due to the effective out-selection of nitrite oxidizing bacteria. Candidatus Kuenenia was identified as the primary bacteria for nitrogen removal (82.7%), and the controlled abundance of heterotrophic denitrifiers in anammox system ensured the enhanced nitrogen removal regardless of high COD loading from THP-AD centrate.

Abstract:At ambient temperature condition, the one-stage partial nitritation/anammox (PNA) process has been successfully adopted to treat the filtrate from the mainstream anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). However, there is no investigation of the performance of this process at low-temperature condition. In this study, the nitrogen removal performance of a pilot-scale PNA reactor at the temperature of 15 °C for treating the filtrate of a mainstream AnMBR was investigated. The nitrogen removal rate of 0.09 kg/m3/d and the nitrogen removal efficiency of 37.6% were achieved. The anammox reaction was the rate-limiting step of the nitrogen removal. Nitrogen removal was attributed in part to denitrification activity. The microbial community analysis confirmed that the main functional bacteria comprised of genus Nitrosomonas and genus Kuenenia. In sum, this research demonstrated the applicability of PNA process for mainstream AnMBR filtrate treatment to some extent and enriched the related knowledge.

Abstract:In this study, an innovative partial nitrification-anammox (PN/A) and endogenous partial denitrification-anammox (EPD/A) process was developed in a single-stage integrated fixed film activated sludge sequencing batch reactor (IFAS-SBR) treating real municipal wastewater with C/N ratio below 3.2. Enhanced efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) removal reached 90.1% with low HRT of 12 h and DO of 0.4 ± 0.1 mg/L. Detailed nitrogen removal mechanism analysis of typical cycle revealed that 89.9% of TN was eliminated through anammox pathway. Anammox bacteria (Candidatus Brocadia) and endogenous denitrifying bacteria (Candidatus Competibacter) were abundant both in biofilms and suspended sludge, meanwhile ammonium-oxidizing bacteria has outcompeted nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, which all favored the synergistic effect of anammox with PN and EPD and contributed to the improvement of nitrogen removal. Overall, the above results confirmed that combined PN/A and EPD/A process is a reliable and efficient alternative for mainstream anammox process.

Abstract:Partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A), an energy-neutral process, is widely employed in the treatment of nitrogen-rich wastewater. However, the intrinsic nitrate accumulation limits the total nitrogen (TN) removal, and the practical application of PN/A continues to face a significant challenge at low temperatures (<15 °C). Here, an integrated partial nitritation-anammox and iron-based denitrification (PNAID) system was developed to address the concern. Two up-flow bioreactors were set up and operated for 400 days, with one as the control group and the other as the experiment group with the addition of Fe 0 . In comparison to the control group, the experiment group with the Fe 0 supplement showed better nitrogen removal during the entire course of the experiment at different temperature levels. Specifically, the TN removal efficiency of the control group decreased from 82.9 % to 53.9 % when the temperature decreased from 30 to 12 °C, while in stark contrast, the experiment group consistently achieved 80 % of TN removal in the same condition. Apart from the enhanced nitrogen removal, the experiment group also exhibited better phosphorus removal (10.6 % versus 74.1 %) and organics removal (49.5 % versus 65.1 %). The enhanced and resilient nutrient removal performance of the proposed integrated process under low temperatures appeared to be attributed to the compact structure of granules and the increased microbial metabolism with Fe 0 supplement, elucidated by a comprehensive analysis including microbial-specific activity, apparent activation energy, characteristics of granular sludge, and metagenomic sequencing. These results clearly confirmed that Fe 0 supplement not only improved nitrogen removal of PN/A process, but also conferred a certain degree of robustness to the system in the face of temperature fluctuations.

Abstract:For achieving efficient and robust treatment of domestic sewage with C/N around 2.8, this study innovatively developed an integrated fermentation, partial-nitrification, partial-denitrification and anammox (IFPNDA) process based on the Anaerobic Baffled Reactor and Continuous-flow Stirred Tank Reactor (ABR-CSTR) bioreactor. Desirable N-removal efficiency of 87.5 ± 2.1% was obtained without external organics, correspondingly effluent total nitrogen (TN) concentration reached 6.1 ± 0.7 mg/L. The N-removal stability was greatly facilitated by the effective linkage between partial nitrification (PN) process and partial denitrification (PD) process in emergency. Highly enriched hydrolytic bacteria (6.9%) and acidogenic bacteria (5.7%) in A1, especially Comamonas (2.8%) and Longilinea (3.5%), induced the significant increase of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in domestic sewage. Thauera (6.1%) in A2 and Nitrosomonas (5.4%) in A3 acted as the dominant flora of nitrite supplies for anammox in IFPNDA process. Candidatus_Brocadia (2.4%) dominated the advanced nitrogen removal. The IFPNDA process exhibited much potential for achieving energy neutrality during wastewater treatment.

Abstract:This study investigated the performance and microbial community dynamics of a start-up method for the partial nitritation-anammox (PN-A) process: start-up from return sludge in an intermittently aerated sequencing batch reactor (IASBR). The robustness of this PN-A IASBR system in achieving long-term efficient nitrogen removal was also investigated. Stable partial nitritation with nitrite accumulation ratio of about 80% was firstly achieved in the IASBR. Then, PN-A process with total nitrogen removal of up to 81.5% was established due to the thriving of anammox bacteria Candidatus Kuenenia resulting from the reduction of the aeration rate. Molecular analysis showed that both bacterial and archaeal communities shifted greatly throughout the start-up stage and the PN-A stage. Besides bacterial genus Nitrosomonas, ammonium-oxidizing archaea (AOA) Candidatus Nitrososphaera with a high abundance of 3.44% also contributed to partial nitritation. Nitrospira was effectively restrained (abundance <1.6%) while methanogens co-existed with the aerobic and anaerobic nitrogen-conversion microorganisms. This study showed that IASBR configuration was efficient in starting up the PN-A process from return sludge, maintaining long-term efficient nitrogen removal and triggering the thrive of AOA.
Partial nitritation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation in biofilter reactors treating low ammonium strength wastewater

Abstract:Abstract Partial nitritation (PN) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) were applied in biofilter reactors to treat low ammonium strength wastewater. The removal efficiency and contribution of PN-ANAMMOX process to COD cr , BOD 5 , NH 3 -N, TN and TP were investigated. The results showed that the average removal rates of COD cr , BOD 5 , NH 3 -N, TN and TP via PN-ANAMMOX process were 91.9%, 96.7%, 98.9%, 92.8% and 93.3% respectively when hydraulic load was 1.0 m/d. The effluent COD cr , BOD 5 , NH 3 -N, TN and TP concentrations were lower than 13.8, 4.8, 0.76, 4.4 and 0.28 mg/L, respectively. The PN-ANAMMOX process showed high efficiency and stability in removing C, N and P pollutants from wastewater. PN reactor played a major role in the removal of COD cr , BOD 5 , NH 3 -N and TP. ANAMMOX reactor played a leading role in TN removal.

Abstract:Partial nitritation-anammox (PN-A) process, which significantly reduces energy and chemical input compared to the conventional biological nitrogen removal process, is a game-changing nitrogen-removal alternative. PN-A treating municipal wastewater (mainstream PN-A) may shed light on achieving a more sustainable energy-neutral municipal wastewater treatment, but practical applications are still not available. This review is therefore critically conducted to identify the challenges impeding the application of mainstream PN-A. At temperatures ≥ 25 °C, PN-A process treating mainstream wastewater can achieve comparable nitrogen removal performance to conventional processes, but the effluent quality may need to be improved to meet stringent discharge standards; at temperatures < 20 °C, long-term process instability, low nitrogen removal efficiency, and poor effluent quality are the main operating difficulties. The reasons are attributed to challenges in maintaining sufficient anammox activity and effective NOB suppression. A framework of operable solutions to these difficulties and challenges is suggested, among which the efficient anammox biomass retention should be prioritized. The effectiveness and practical availability of these solutions are also assessed. Ultimately, depending on technological readiness, a roadmap for the PN-A application is proposed to make the best of the benefits of PN-A and promote the implementation of energy-neutral/positive municipal wastewater treatment.

An Innovative Process for Mature Landfill Leachate and Waste Activated Sludge Simultaneous Treatment Based on Partial Nitrification, In Situ Fermentation, and Anammox (PNFA)

Abstract:An innovative partial nitrification, in situ fermentation, and Anammox (PNFA) system was developed to achieve mature landfill leachate and waste activated sludge simultaneous treatment. Three separate sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were used for partial nitrification (PN-SBR), integrated fermentation-denitrification (IFD-SBR), and partial nitrification-Anammox (PNA-SBR). After 200 days of continuous operation, a satisfactory nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of 99.2 ± 0.1% was obtained, with an effluent total nitrogen (TN) of 15.2 ± 3.2 mg/L. In IFD-SBR, the volatile fatty acids generated from fermentation drove efficient denitrification, obtaining sludge and nitrogen reduction rates of 4.2 ± 0.7 and 0.61 ± 0.04 kg/m3·day, respectively. Furthermore, unwanted fermentation metabolites (134.1 mg/L NH4+-N) were further treated by PNA-SBR using a combination of step-feed and intermittent aeration strategies. In PNA-SBR, Anammox significantly contributed to 82.1% nitrogen removal, and Anammox bacteria (Candidatus Brocadia, 2.3%) mutually benefited with partially denitrifying microorganisms (Thauera, 4.2%), with 66.3% of generated nitrate reduced to nitrite and then reutilized in situ by Anammox. Compared with the conventional nitrification-denitrification process, PNFA reduced oxygen energy consumption, external carbon source dosage, and CO2 emission by 21.3, 100, and 38.9%, respectively, and obtained 50.1% external WAS reduction efficiency.

Abstract:Although the partial nitrification-anammox process (PN-A) has achieved great success in nitrogen removal for the high ammonium concentration wastewater, its application is still limited in low ammonium concentration wastewater treatment due to its instability and low nitrogen removal efficiency. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with continuous aeration was employed to enrich ammonia oxidation bacteria (AOB) and suppress nitrite oxidation bacteria (NOB) first; then, the SBR was operated intermittently aerated SBR (IASBR), to which the anammox granular sludge (AMX) was added to achieve complete autotrophic nitrogen removal under low influent ammonium concentration of 100 mg/L. A mathematical model was used to optimize the IASBR aeration strategy to achieve sub-optimal nitrogen removal. The experimental results showed that high nitrite accumulation efficiency (above 80%) in the SBR and a fast start-up within 100 days and a stable TN (total nitrogen) removal efficiency of 70% were achieved in the IASBR. Meanwhile, the simulation results indicated that keeping aeration duration at 4 h, k L a (oxygen transfer coefficient) at 50 day −1 , or aeration duration at 2.5 h, k L a at 80 day −1 could obtain a higher total nitrogen removal efficiency (TNR) (TNR > 80%), and the TN removal could also be improved by increasing hydraulic retention time (HRT) under the optimal oxygen supply rate.

Abstract:In this pilot-scale study, an innovative mainstream treatment process that couples the anaerobic membrane reactor (AnMBR) with a one-stage PN/A system was proposed for advancing the concept of carbon neutrality in the municipal wastewater treatment plant. This work demonstrates the start-up procedure of a pilot-scale one-stage PN/A system for mainstream treatment. The 255-day start-up of the one-stage PN/A system involved the cultivation of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) from the activated sludge, suppression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), investigation of in-situ growth kinetics of anammox bacteria (AnAOB), and the 50-day operation of the pilot-scale AnMBR-PN/A process for natural mainstream treatment. It is verified in the pilot-scale system for the first time that the in-situ free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA) exposure could effectively eliminate the Nitrospira (the NOB genus) while retaining the Nitosonomas (the AOB genus) community in the suspended sludge. NOB community rebounding was not detected even at the mainstream conditions with low nitrogen concentrations (Influent ammonium concentration=38±6 mg-NH4+-N/L) by intermittent aeration to control the system dissolved oxygen (DO) below 0.5 mg/L. The results of the mainstream treatment showed that the average effluent total nitrogen (TN) in the coupled process was generally lower than 10 mg-N/L, which meets the discharge limits of most prefectures in Japan. The investigated results of the in-situ anammox bacteria (AnAOB) growth kinetics suggested that the promoted start-up strategy of taking advantage of the warm months with higher mainstream temperature to achieve the rapid in-situ growth of the AnAOB is applicable in the investigated regions. From the perspective of the removal performance of the TN and organic substance, the AnMBR-PN/A process has great potential as the layouts of the carbon-neutral mainstream wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract:Anammox is a green, economical and efficient nitrogen removal process. Most successful anammox studies are based on biofilm- or granule-based systems, but pure floc sludge partial nitrification (PN) and anammox (A) systems that are not inoculated with anaerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) are rarely reported. If the anammox process occurs in floc-based systems, the large specific surface areas provide more efficient nitrogen removal, and are much more economical in terms of construction and investment. This study investigated the establishment, performance and sludge characteristics of a one-stage PN/A system with pure floc sludge and exhibited a short sludge retention time (SRT) and low mixed liquor suspended solids (SS) content. The experiment was run for approximately 1260 days and divided into five stages based on the SRTs and influent ammonia concentrations treating synthetic wastewater with no organic matter. The results showed that the AnAOB were successfully cultivated and enriched with ordinary nitrification and denitrification sludge, which formed a pure floc-based anammox system with a short SRT (at least 14 days) and a low SS control. The maximum nitrogen removal efficiency and sludge removal loading rate reached 87.1 % and 3.16 kg N/(kg VSS·d) with ammonia loading rates = 0.55 and 0.56 kg-N/(m 3 ·d), dissolved oxygen = 0.2 and 0 mg/L, temperature = 30 and 28 °C, mixed liquor volatile suspended solid (VSS) = 800 and 130 mg/L, free ammonia (FA)/VSS = 3.5 and 47.5 mg NH 3 -N/g VSS and SRT = 30 and 15 days, respectively. Moreover, the FA/VSS ratio was used to determine the operating performance of the PN/A system, and the thresholds for inhibiting nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, including AnAOB, were 0.5–50 and above 50 mg NH 3 -N/g VSS, respectively. The floc-based one-stage PN/A systems proposed in this study provide reductions in the volumes, and floor areas for the reactor tanks, and in the cost of the carrier.

Abstract:The start-up and stable operation of partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) treatment of mature landfill leachate (MLL) still face challenges. This study developed an innovative staged pilot-scale PN/A system to enhance nitrogen removal from MLL. The staged process included a PN unit, an anammox upflow enhanced internal circulation biofilm (UEICB) reactor, and a post-biofilm unit. Rapid start-up of the continuous flow PN process (full-concentration MLL) was achieved within 35 days by controlling dissolved oxygen and leveraging free ammonia and free nitrous acid to selectively suppress nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). The UEICB was equipped with an annular flow agitator combined with the enhanced internal circulation device of the guide tube, which achieved an efficient enrichment of Candidatus Kuenenia in the biofilm (relative abundance of 33.4%). The nitrogen removal alliance formed by the salt-tolerant anammox bacterium ( Candidatus Kuenenia) and denitrifying bacteria (unclassified SBR1031 and Denitratisoma ) achieved efficient nitrogen removal of UEICB (total nitrogen removal percentage: 90.8%) and at the same time effective treatment of the refractory organic matter (ROM). The dual membrane process of UEICB fixed biofilm combined with post-biofilm is effective in sludge retention, and can stably control the effluent suspended solids (SS) at a level of less than 5 mg/L. The post-biofilm unit ensured that effluent total nitrogen (TN) remained below the 40 mg/L discharge standard (98.5% removal efficiency). Compared with conventional nitrification-denitrification systems, the staged PN/A process substantially reduced oxygen consumption, sludge production, CO 2 emissions and carbon consumption by 22.8%, 67.1%, 87.1% and 87.1%, respectively. The 195-day stable operation marks the effective implementation of the innovative pilot-scale PN/A process in treating actual MLL. This study provides insights into strategies for rapid start-up, robust NOB suppression, and anammox biomass retention to advance the application of PN/A in high-ammonia low-carbon wastewater.

Abstract:In case of no advanced treatment units and supplement of carbon sources with high dose, removal of TN remains as challenge for wastewater treatment plants. In this study, a 67.5 m 3 /day Anoxic-Oxic-Anoxic/ Sequencing Batch Fixed-biofilm and Activated Sludge Reactor (AOA-SBFASR) was developed and operated for 150 days. During the trial, removal efficiencies of COD, NH 4 + -N and TN reached 92.55 %, 98.75 %, and 75.64 %, respectively. Reconfiguration of microbial community was observed during the trial, and the abundances of nitrifying bacteria, denitrifying bacteria and refractory organic degrading bacteria were increased, indicating that AOA-SBFASR might has great potentials for enhanced nitrogen removal and refractory organics conversion and utilization. The analysis of nitrogen metabolism showed that the reduced nitrogen was oxidized through complete nitrification pathway and the nitrogen reduction was mainly performed by pathways of denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction.
