Abstract:As a novel nanoporous carbon material with high porosity, large specific surface area, excellent electrical conductivity and high temperature resistance, carbon aerogels have broad application prospects in the fields of catalyst carriers, energy storage and adsorption materials. In this work, the hydrophobic micro-convex rough interface cellulose carbon aerogels (CCAs) were fabricated via carbonization of cellulose-lithium bromide (LiBr) molten salt hydrate gelled system. The prepared CCAs shows a low density (0.016–0.023 g/cm3), high porosity (98.9–99.2 %), superior hydrophobicity (water contact angle over 135°) and excellent absorption of different oils and organic solvents. The absorption ability of CCAs 1.0-T800 for different oils and organic solvents can be 25–55 times its own weight. More importantly, the CCAs adsorbent can be reused by simple absorption/distillation method and still kept high-efficiency oil absorption capacity and excellent hydrophobicity after 5 absorption/elution cycles, displaying recyclability and robust stability. This study provides a green and facile way to fabrication of cellulose II carbon aerogels for application in spilled oil recovery, and exhibited highly promising as an economical, efficient and safe adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Oil leakage has caused great damage to the marine aquatic environment. Cellulose aerogels can be used to separate oil/water mixture, but the low strength and recyclability have restricted its application. In order to improve the performance of cellulose-based aerogels, hydrophobic and magnetic modification with ultrasound enhancement was carried out. Firstly, hydroxyethyl cellulose-lignin aerogel (CL-aerogel) was synthesized by combining hydroxyethyl cellulose with lignin through sol–gel method with freeze-drying. The incorporation of lignin endowed the aerogel with a 3D porous network and enhanced mechanical properties. Then CL-aerogel was modified with n-dodecyl mercaptan (NDM) and Fe 3 O 4 NPs through ultrasound enhancement to obtain HMCL-aerogel. The results disclosed that with the increase in NDM usage and ultrasound time, the hydrophobicity and magnetic responsiveness of aerogel was enhanced. Furthermore, HMCL-aerogel had good oil absorption capacity with high selectivity. The HMCL-aerogel could be easily recycled by an external magnetic field and could be reused through a simple extrusion treatment. Meanwhile, the aerogel exhibited effective separation of oil/water mixture with a flux as high as 2986 L‧m −2 ‧h −1 even in corrosive conditions and maintained over 99 % separation efficiency after 10 separation cycles. Therefore, the hydrophobic and magnetic hydroxyethyl cellulose-lignin aerogel could potentially serve as an intriguing candidate for practical oil-polluted wastewater remediation.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibril (CNF) composite aerogels have been the focus of studies in organic solvent absorption and oil removal fields due to their low density, high absorption capacity, nontoxicity, and biodegradable properties. However, the complicated pretreatment process and increasing environmental concerns restrict the large-scale application of CNF-based materials. Herein, hydrophobic lignin containing nanofibril (LCNF)/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aerogels (LPAs) were prepared through freeze-drying and thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of methyl trichlorosilane (MTMS). The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) result showed that the hydrophobic siloxane coating was successfully prepared on the LPA scaffold. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) result showed that the modified LPAs (M-LPAs) exhibited three-dimensional interpenetrating network structure. The aerogel presented outstanding physical properties including low density of 12.95 ± 0.40 mg/cm 3 , high porosity of 98.99%, high flexibility, and enhanced compressibility due to its homogenous porous structure. The wettability test revealed that the aerogel, with a water contact angle (WCA) up to 146 ± 2°, was highly hydrophobic. The M-LPAs exhibited absorption capacity for various oils and organic solvents and the maximal absorption capacity of M-LPA-0.25 for chloroform could reach 106.80 ± 4.97 g/g aerogel. In addition, M-LPA-0.25 was capable of separating emulsified water/oil mixtures, which extends its potential application. Notably, the aerogel demonstrated good reusability because it still maintained more than 61% of its original absorption capacity after 10 extrusion cycles. The facile technique for the preparation of LCNFs from low-cost lignocellulosic biomass without a chemical bleaching process is green, sustainable. Thus it can be used to fabricate high-efficiency LCNF-based absorbents from agricultural waste for the removal of the oil and industrial organic solvent spills.

Abstract:In recent years, the frequent occurrence of oil spills and the excessive discharge of oily wastewater have caused serious damage to the environment. Therefore, the development of oil/water separation materials has attracted widespread attention. Here, we have successfully synthesized cellulose aerogels (CAs) based on a green and simple LiBr system and modified the CAs with methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) for the fabrication of hydrophobized cellulose II aerogels (HCAs). The prepared HCAs have low density (0.021–0.039 g/cm3), high porosity (97.6–98.7 %) and hierarchical porous structure. The water contact angle of the HCAs was 150°±5°, exhibiting the excellent hydrophobic and lipophilic properties of the HCAs. Oil/water separation experiments have shown that HCAs has outstanding separation efficiency of over 96 % for a variety of oil/water mixtures. Furthermore, the HCAs also exhibited excellent reusability for long-term use. HCAs are promising for a wide range of practical applications in oil–water separation, including oil/chemical spills and industrial effluent discharge, owing to the green and facile preparation process, excellent separation efficiency and superior reusability.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic membranes have been playing crucial role in efficient remediation of organic pollutants contaminated water, especially for oily discharged wastewater. Taking advantages of the inherent features of graphene oxide (GO), sodium alginate (SA) and lignin, a novel type of superhydrophobic biopolymer aerogel membrane (T-SA/ligninx/rGO-MTMS) was prepared by freeze-casting technique and subsequent chemical vapor deposition, during which trimethoxymethylsilane (MTMS) silylation growth was achieved for the supreme protuberance, leading to the formation of rough and hydrophobic surface that favorably looks like a hedgehog carrying apples. Due to the air cushion induced by cooperative interaction between rough lignin particles and SA of 3D porous network with gas as a dispersion medium, and crumpled GO nanosheets, as-fabricated membrane with integrated functions of biopolymers possessed superhydrophobic surface characteristics (WCA = 161°). More favorably, utilizing the inherent molecular features, lignin has been successfully employed to de-oxidize GO during this preparative concept. By virtue of the low-surface-energy reduced GO (rGO) and abundant protuberance, T-SA/ligninx/rGO-MTMS exhibited potential cycling performance even with 10 cycles of oil/water separation and oil sorption. This study might shed light on the value-added utilization of integrated functions of biopolymers for designing task-specific functional materials for various applications.

Abstract:Nowadays high porosity aerogels are widely applied in wastewater purification, while the fragility and unversatility of nascent cellulose aerogels limited the application in oil/water filtering separation. Here, highly compressible, elastic, superhydrophobic cellulose/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite aerogels were fabricated via combination of chemical cross-linking, freeze drying and silanization. The obtained cellulose/PVA aerogels exhibited durable superhydrophobicity with WCA of 156.6 °, even maintaining 155.0 ° after 30 days. Synergistic effects of physical entanglement, chemical cross-linking and H-bond network between cellulose and PVA molecular chains endowed the aerogels with excellent compressibility and recoverability. The aerogels exhibited maximum compressive stress of 490.7 kPa at 90% strain, even without reduction in mechanical strength under 70% compressive strain for 10 cycles. More importantly, the strengthened aerogels exhibited remarkable separation performances for both immiscible oil/water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions. Fascinating permeation flux of up to 7176.3 L m−2 h−1 and total separation amount as high as 4550.6 L m−2 with separation efficiency of 98.5% for water-in-cyclohexane emulsion were harvested. Thus, this work provides a green, sustainable and mass-producible cellulose-based aerogel for high-efficiency oily wastewater remediation.

Abstract:A hydrophobic/oleophilic silica‐cellulose composite aerogel has been developed. It shows considerable absorption capacity for oils as well as excellent selective absorption of oils from oil‐water mixtures. A cellulose aerogel with very low overall density is fabricated by freeze‐drying aqueous cellulose solution. A hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose aerogel is further fabricated by coating the cellulose aerogel with hexyltrimethoxysilane‐modified SiO2 nanoparticles. The features of the developed hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose aerogel are characterized with density and porosity measurement, infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and contact angle measurement. Finally, the oil absorption performance of the developed hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose aerogel is investigated. The results show that SiO2 nanoparticles have been successfully loaded on the surface of the aerogel backbone after fulfillment of fabrication, and the surface of the aerogel turns to be hydrophobic/oleophilic (water contact angle 131° and oil contact angle 0°). The oil absorption experiment results show that the absorption capacity for organic solvents is from 10 to 21 times the initial aerogel weight, depending on the density of the absorbed organic solvents. In addition, the aerogel still maintains good stability in high temperature, strong acid or strong base conditions. Furthermore, the aerogel also shows good performance in separating oil from oil–water mixtures. This hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose aerogel can be a promising choice for remedying water pollution caused by oil contamination.

Abstract:Cellulose aerogel, a sustainable material characterized by low density and high porosity, demonstrates promising potential for addressing oil spill incidents. In this study, waste cotton stalk biomass was processed using formic acid and hydrogen peroxide to extract cellulose, resulting in the successful creation of a cost-effective aerogel. This material exhibits notable attributes: low density (21.1 mg cm −3 ), high porosity (91.5%), significant hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 147°), exceptional adsorption capacity (47.61 g g −1 ), and robust cycling performance (maintaining 94% adsorption capacity after 15 cycles). Moreover, the CNF/CS biomass aerogel boasts high mechanical strength and exceptional oil–water and emulsion separation properties. These characteristics position this aerogel as a promising solution for mitigating various sudden oil spill incidents, indicating its potential for widespread application.

Abstract:Developing multifunctional materials with oil/water separation, dye adsorption, and antibacterial activities presents an enticing prospect for wastewater treatment. In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) porous cellulose (CE)/ quaternized cellulose (QCE) composite aerogel with super-wettability through co-deposition of polydopamine (PDA) and polyethylenimine (PEI) are reported. The PDA/PEI coating endows the aerogel with superhydrophilicity (WCA=0o), the QCE act as anionic dye sorbent at the same time, makes the material with antimicrobial property against Escherichia coli (E. coli). Oil/water mixtures can be separated on the as-prepared aerogel with high efficiency(>99%) even the filtration repeated for 10 times, the as-prepared aerogel can also separate oil-in-water emulsion. Moreover, the as-prepared aerogel exhibited excellent adsorption performance for alizarin red, the calculated maximum adsorption capacities were 454.545 mg g-1. Besides, our modification also endowed the aerogel with antibacterial and anti-oil-fouling activities. The inhibition zone test verified the good elimination to E. coli. This work may open a new avenue for designing versatile aerogel with multiple functions for waste water remediation.

Construction of Super-Hydrophobic Lignocellulosic Nanofibrils Aerogels as Speedy Oil Absorbents

Abstract:Lignocellulosic nanofibrils (LCNF) aerogels have a three-dimensional structure, with large specific surface area, low density, which is promising to be developed into a new type of adsorbent with high absorption capacity. However, LCNF aerogels have the problem of simultaneous oil and water adsorption. This high hydrophilicity directly leads to low adsorption efficiency in oil-water systems. This paper suggests a facile and economical method for the synthesis of biocompatible CE-LCNF aerogels using LCNF and Castor oil triglycidyl ether (CE) was successfully established. The use of LCNF enabled aerogels to possess remarkably uniform pore size and structural integrity, while the introduction of hydrophobic silica produced stable superhydrophobicity for more than 50 days at room temperature. These aerogels presented desirable hydrophobicity (131.6°), excellent oil adsorption capacity (62.5 g/g) and excellent selective sorption property, making them ideal absorbents for oil spill cleaning. The effects of ratios of LCNF to CE composition, temperatures and oil viscosity on the oil adsorption performance of aerogels were estimated. The results displayed that the aerogels had the maximum adsorption capacity at 25 °C. The pseudo-secondary model had higher validity in oil adsorption kinetic theories compared to the pseudo-first-order model. The CE-LCNF aerogels were excellent super-absorbents for oil removal. Moreover, the LCNF was renewable and nontoxic, which has the potential to promote environmental applications.
Low temperature-resistant superhydrophobic and elastic cellulose aerogels derived from seaweed solid waste as efficient oil traps for oil/water separation

Abstract:Aerogel has excellent application potential in adsorption, heat preservation, and other areas due to its typical advantages of low density and high porosity. However, there are several issues with the use of aerogel in oil/water separation, including weak mechanical qualities and challenges in eliminating organic contaminants at low temperature. Inspired by cellulose Iα, which has excellent performance at low temperature, this study used cellulose Iα nanofibers extracted from seaweed solid waste as the skeleton, through covalent cross-linked with ethylene imine polymer (PEI) and hydrophobic modification of 1, 4-phenyl diisocyanate (MDI), supplemented by freeze-drying technology to form three-dimensional sheet, and successfully obtained cellulose aerogels derived from seaweed solid waste (SWCA). The compression test shows that the maximum compressive stress of SWCA is 61 kPa, and the initial performance still maintains 82% after 40 cryogenic compression cycles. In addition, the contact angles of water and oil on the surface of the SWCA were 153° and 0°, respectively, and the stable hydrophobic time in simulated seawater is more than 3 h. By combining the elasticity and superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity, the SWCA with an oil absorption capacity of up to 11–30 times its mass, might be utilized repeatedly for the separation of an oil/water mixture.
Hierarchical aerogels based on cellulose nanofibers and long-chain polymers for enhancing oil–water separation efficiency

Abstract:The hydrophobic chain length of biomass-based aerogels used for oil–water separation was evaluated as a major parameter influencing the aerogels' hydrophobicity. The properties of the porous structure were enhanced by the hierarchical assembly of the aerogels with biopolymeric structural units and polymer mineralization. The cellulose network was strengthened through silanization, and the nanocellulose network was further enhanced through coating with mineralizers containing long-chain hydrophobic molecules. Interfacial engineering was employed to establish multiscale interactions through the freeze-drying-induced modification of cellulose nanofibers and mineralized coatings of long-chain alkyl polymers. The resulting hierarchically structured aerogel exhibits low density (11.4 kg/m 3 ), excellent mechanical compression properties across a wide temperature range (capable of enduring 100 cycles of compression), high porosity (99.2%), superhydrophobicity (152°), and recyclability. It maintains a 57.9% adsorption rate even after 40 adsorption–desorption tests, while also preserving its shape integrity. Moreover, it can be recycled and reused. At a temperature of 700 °C, the mass loss was only 44.47%, with excellent thermal stability. The aerogel can reduce oil pollutants in the ocean by adsorption, recover oil resources, and protect the natural environment. The assembly and optimization of nanofibrous matrix interfaces through the mineralization of long-chain polymers enhanced the performance of functionalized cellulose-based aerogels.

Abstract:Fibrous aerogels have received considerable attentions owing to their high specific surface area and multifunctional applications. However, it remains a huge challenge to prepare multi-structured nanofibrous aerogels using green renewable materials. Herein, lignin-based multi-scale cellular aerogels assembled from co-electrospun nanofibers are successfully constructed. Primarily, by preoxidation of core–shell nanofibers assembled uncrosslinked aerogels, lignin-based pre-oxidized aerogels (LPA) with hierarchically natural wood-tracheid-like structures and porous cell walls are prepared. The LPA exhibits excellent hydrophobicity and high adsorptive capacity for diverse oils and organic solvents (adsorption capacity up to 103 g g−1). Furthermore, benefiting from the existence of nitrogen functional groups, LPA can be carbonized to nitrogen-doped carbon aerogels (NCA). The obtained NCA not only inherits cellular structures from LPA but also creates abundant interior porosity of nanofibers due to the vacancy left by degradation of polymer. The NCA is used as electrodes materials of supercapacitors, the multi-channel structures at micro/nano scales of NCA can serve as “highway” for fast transportation of ions and electrons. The symmetrical supercapacitor assembled from it delivers a high energy density of 32 Wh kg−1. Our study provides a new insight for designing and synthesizing biomass-based multifunctional materials through a low carbon footprint manner.

Abstract:Nowadays, the problem of oil spill and organic solvent pollution has become more and more serious, and developing a green and efficient treatment method has become a research hotspot. Herein, the preparation of porous super-hydrophobic aerogel by directional freezing with cellulose nanofibre (CNF) as the base material, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the cross-linking agent and montmorillonite (MMT) as the modifier and filler, followed by hydrophobic treatment with chemical vapour deposition is reported. The prepared composite aerogel presented three-dimensional inter-perforation network structure, low density (26.52 mg⋅cm-3 ), high porosity (96.1 %) and good hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 140°). Notably, the composite aerogel has a good adsorption effect on different oils and organic solutions, and its adsorption capacity can reach 40-68 times of its initial weight. After complete adsorption, the aerogel could be easily collected. More importantly, the composite aerogel had high strength, whose compressive stress at 70 % strain reached 0.15 MPa and could bear over 1290 times its weight without deformation after 2 weeks. A new, green, simple and efficient absorbent for the adsorption of oils and organic solvents is provided.
Natural microfibrils/regenerated cellulose-based carbon aerogel for highly efficient oil/water separation

Abstract:Cellulose-based carbon aerogels as biodegradable and renewable biomass materials have presented potential applications in oil/water separation. Herein, a novel carbon aerogel composed of natural microfibrils/regenerated cellulose (NM/RCA) was directly prepared by economical hardwood pulp as raw material using a novel co-solvent composed of deep eutectic solvent (DES) and N-methyl morpholine-N-oxide monohydrate (NMMO·H 2 O). In addition, the morphology and structure of the filiform natural microfibers could be remained after carbonized at 400 °C, which resulted in a low density (8–10 mg cm −3 ), high specific surface area (768.89 m 2 g −1 ) and high sorption capability. In addition, the aerogel exhibited high compressibility, outstanding elasticity, excellent fatigue resistance, and recyclability (80.5% height recovery after repeating 100 cycles at the strain of 80%). Due to the morphology and composition of the carbonized microfiber surface, the superhydrophobic materials with a water contact angle of 151.5°, could sorb various oils and organic solvents with 65–133 times its own weight and maintain 91.9% sorption capacity after 25 cycles. In addition, the aerogels could achieve the continuous separation of carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) from water with a high flux rate of 11,718.8 L m −2 h −1 . Therefore, our prepared NM/RCA aerogels are anticipated to have broad potential applications in oil purification and contaminant remediation.

Abstract:Superwetting aerogel is a promising alternative for the remediation of emulsified oily wastewater for its high porosity combined with extreme wettability enabled high separation performances to emulsion wastewater. However, it remains challenging for superwetting aerogels to accomplish high-performance dual separation to surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions with high stability. Herein, an environmentally benign superamphiphilic composite aerogel was prepared by a green synthesis route that relied on the utilization of natural amphiphilic biomass. Collagen fibers (CFs) were utilized to construct the three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular skeleton of aerogel to provide high storage capacity of water/oil and outstanding capillary effect to boost the mass transfer. The two-dimensional (2D) lamellar structure of gelatin (Gel) was further grown on the skeleton of CFs aerogel to play the role for simultaneously enhanced demulsifying capability and spreading of emulsions. The as-prepared superamphiphilic aerogel enabled the separation of highly stable surfactant-stabilized O/W and W/O emulsions with high separation efficiency and flux. Excellent recycling performances and anti-fouling performance were also confirmed. Our investigations therefore demonstrated that the structural engineering of superamphiphilic aerogel is a promising way to realize high-performance dual separation of surfactant-stabilized O/W and W/O emulsion wastewater.

Abstract:Aqueous ecological environment is exacerbated by indiscriminate discharge of industrial and municipal wastewater, particularly oily contaminants. Janus materials with unique asymmetric wettability have been considered potential candidates for oil-water separation. Herein, we developed a novel approach to accomplish controllable construction of three-dimensional Janus all-cellulose aerogel with asymmetric wettability based on a similar phase self-assembling strategy. Significantly, the ratio of asymmetric structures could be controlled by tailoring thickness of hydrophobic/hydrophilic layers. Three-dimensional Janus all-cellulose aerogel had both super-hydrophilic/oleophilic and super-hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose skeleton structures simultaneously. The adsorption capacity of the aerogel for oil reached up to 34.38 g/g. It could effectively separate a variety of oil-water mixtures and water-in-oil emulsions only driven by gravity, even surfactant-stabilized emulsions. The separation efficiency was more than 99% with the high separation flux. The 'Trade-off' effect in the field of membrane separation was avoided effectively. Three-dimensional Janus all-cellulose aerogel exhibited good stability and recyclability . Moreover, the demulsification and separation mechanism was analyzed in details. This work provided not only an environmental-friendly, facile and flexible approach to construct controllable three-dimensional asymmetric wettable Janus materials, but also a scientific understanding and development of the separation mechanism of three-dimensional Janus materials.

Abstract:The separation of oil and water mixtures has become crucial globally due to the frequent incidents of petroleum substances and organic solvents leaking into water and the growing necessity to treat industrial wastes containing oil. Most methods for removing oily pollutants are often time-consuming, costly, and low-efficiency, and they also cause secondary pollution. The absorption method of oily pollutants has been noticed due to its high efficiency, low energy requirement, and simple application. Aerogels are considered one of the most attractive absorbents for separating oil and water mixtures due to their unique characteristics, such as low density, high porosity, and suitable oil absorption capacity. In this research, a superhydrophobic cellulose aerogel was prepared using crystalline cellulose extracted from waste paper, TiO 2 , SiO 2 nanoparticles, and vinyltrimethoxysilane by a simple dip-coating method for the first time. It was then utilized to remove oily pollutants and organic solvents from water. XRD, FESEM, EDS, FT-IR, DLS, BET, and water contact angle measurements were employed to identify and characterize the synthesized materials and the modified aerogel. The prepared cellulose aerogel exhibited a water contact angle of 163.39 ̊ and a sorption capacity ranging from 28.5 to 31.5 g.g − 1 for various oily pollutants and organic solvents. Additionally, this superhydrophobic aerogel demonstrated excellent reusability and effectively removed emulsified oil droplets in water. This research showed that the aerogel made from waste paper can effectively separate oily pollutants and organic solvents from water.

Abstract:The disposal of oily wastewater has attracted extensive attention worldwide these days. Emerging environmentally friendly materials with large capacity and high selectivity that can effectively absorb oil and organic solvents from water or realize oil/water separation are in high demand. Herein, we demonstrated the facile fabrication of a sustainable, ecofriendly, biomass-derived, honeycomblike aerogel, taking lignin, agarose, and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as basic ingredients. The aerogel possessed porous three-dimensional (3D) cellular structure with tunable low density (rho < 0.052 g cm(-3)) and featured good flexibility and compressibility. The modified aerogel, which was able to achieve switching from the absorption of oil and organic solvents to desorption just by altering the medium pH, was obtained simply through immersing the original aerogel into a solution of the synthesized copolymer containing pH-responsive component poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (pDMAEMA). The absorption capacity of the modified aerogel for oil and organic solvents was in the range of 20-40 times its own weight, which was also adjustable via controlling the concentration of starting materials. The reusability of the modified aerogel could be carried out by both manual squeezing and pH-induced desorption, further broadening its application fields. The successful design of the biomass-derived modified aerogel with two-way reusability could provide new thoughts for the design of multifunctional oil absorbents, also giving efficient and sustainable options for water treatment and environmental protection.
