Abstract:Polyimide is a commonly used polymer dielectric material on spacecraft. The vacuum and radiation environment can easily lead to the accumulation of static charge on the spacecraft and trigger the surface discharge. Therefore, improving the surface DC flashover voltage of the dielectric in the space environment is crucial to improve the reliability of the spacecraft. In this paper, ZnO/PI nanocomposite was prepared to improve the flashover voltage. The electrical performance test including the relative permittivity, surface and bulk resistivity of the specimen was tested. The thermally stimulated depolarizing current method was used to analyze the trap parameters. The results show that the flashover voltage of PI is enhanced by nano ZnO, among which the flashover voltage increases the most at 3wt% ZnO content. Further analysis shows that the surface flashover intensity depends on the trap density, conductivity and methods of charge transportation and accumulation. The higher the trap density and higher electrical conductivity in the ohmic region, the lower the charge accumulated and the higher the flashover.

Abstract:The space environment will charge the surface of the spacecraft. Due to the low discharge ability of the dielectric material, it may cause the surface discharge of the spacecraft and affect the normal work of the spacecraft. Polyimide is a typical dielectric material on the spacecraft, this paper attempts to improve the surface discharge ability by modifying polyimide with nano-ZnO. The research method is based on the surface potential decay platform, which is an intuitive approach to evaluate the states of surface charging. The surface potential decay characteristics of pure polyimide and its modified samples are tested. The surface potential decay mechanism of the dielectric is analyzed by calculating the trap characteristics. Results show that the surface potential of ZnO modified polyimide has less decrement and rate of decay than that of the pure polyimide. The deep trap density of electron trap and hole trap density is less than that of pure polyimide, the shallow trap of pure polyimide is the lowest. The change of electron trap level is small, while the hole trap level increases.

Abstract:Surface flashover in vacuum is a kind of complicated surface and interface phenomena, which seriously hamper the overall performance of many electrical and electronic devices. It has been realized that surface condition of a solid material strongly affects its flashover phenomena under high electric field. The artificial doping ingredients could change the energy distribution and the density of electron and hole traps. For adjusting the trap distribution trapping parameters, the composite material of epoxy resin intermingled with aluminum hydroxide are prepared. For each sample with different filler concentration, its trapping parameters are investigated via the isothermal current theory through measuring its surface potential after being charged. Then its surface insulation performance is tested according to the flashover voltage under pulsed excitation in vacuum. Abstract:Measurements of space charge density and trap levels are informative ways to predict failure conditions of insulation materials. The charges are injected from electrodes and penetrate from surface towards deep inside of the insulation material. In order to resist the charge injection, trapping, migration and increase charge recombination, de-trapping and extraction rate, layer (nanocomposite-PI-nanocomposite) sandwich structure samples are used. Two techniques Pulse Electro Acoustic (PEA) and Thermal Stimulated Current (TSC) are combined to characterize space charge behavior and trap levels. Lab-view based program is used to detect the charges density distribution and total charge decay, different peaks of current using TSC technique are used to get activation energy and trap level density. The effects of structural interface (single, double, three layers) and types of nano (Al2O3, SiO2) fillers are analyzed to influence charge accumulation polarity and trap levels. Trap levels are calculated using TSC data as well as total charge decay data. The trap values calculated from both data match each other. Al2O3-PI-Al2O3 sandwich structure showed remarkable improvements to resist accumulation of space charge for longer time. Mostly charges are shallow traps with 1.126eV trap level and recombination rate is higher. In double layer structure in which interface is made up of SiO2 and Al2O3, deep trap level of 1.26 eV and higher trap density is observed. The charges decay is faster in three layer structure than double and single layer structure. It is concluded that the interface formed with different type of nano and structure of insulation, both are an important parameters for manufacturing industry to suppress space charges accumulation and traps.

Abstract:This paper presents the mechanism of the surface charge dissipation and flashover voltage of epoxy resin (EP) with nano aluminum nitride (AlN) composites enhanced by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment in open air. Surface conductivity, surface potential decay (SPD), flashover voltage, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and surface roughness were measured to evaluate the electrical and physicochemical properties of EP/AlN nanocomposite samples before and after the plasma treatments. It is found that surface conductivity is evidently increased with the increase of the plasma treatment time. Moreover, the SPD of the plasma treated samples after positive and negative corona charging are enhanced. However, the positive charge dissipation is influenced more significantly by the treatment. Both the positive and negative flashover voltage are improved after the plasma treatment, and the amplitude of negative flashover voltage is higher than the positive flashover voltage in each case. Physicochemical measurements show that the content of polar groups is improved after the plasma treatment, and the surface roughness is continuously increased with the increment of the plasma treatment time. The calculated trap distribution demonstrates that the amount of both shallow holes trap and shallow electron trap are increased after the plasma treatment. This investigation attributes the enhanced SPD and improved flashover voltage to the increased surface conductivity, the more amount of shallow traps and the improvement of the sample surface roughness.

Abstract:The polymers such as polyimide are easy to initiate surface flashover in space environment, and especially the degassing phenomenon of the polymer material in space high vacuum environment will enhance the flashover process. In order the reveal the degassing effect on surface flashover, the plate polyimide sample was produced and the surface flashover testing system was established. Due to the degassing, the inorganic nano-filler modification and surface fluorination treatment technology was chosen to improve the surface flashover voltage of the polyimide. Comparing to the virgin polyimide sample, the surface flashover voltage of the modified and surface fluorinated polyimide sample increased obviously. It is considered that the nano-filler fills the stomata in the material while the surface fluorination improves the surface stability, both of which reduced the gas desorption thus the surface flashover voltage of the polyimide increases. Both methods are expected to use for the spacecraft polymers in the future to improve its safety and lifetime.

Abstract:Nanocomposites combining inorganic nanoparticles with high dielectric constant and polymers with high breakdown strength are promising for the high energy density storage of electricity, and carrier traps can significantly affect the dielectric breakdown process. Nevertheless, there still lacks direct experimental evidence on how nanoparticles affect the trap characteristics of nanocomposites, especially in a spatially resolved manner. Here, a technique is developed to image the trap distribution based on sequential Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) in combination with the isothermal surface potential decay (ISPD) technique, wherein both shallow and deep trap densities and the corresponding energy levels can be mapped with nanoscale resolution. The technique is first validated using the widely-used commercial biaxially oriented polypropylene, yielding consistent results with macroscopic ISPD. The technique is then applied to investigate polyvinylidene fluoride-based nanocomposites filled with barium titanate nanoparticles, revealing higher deep trap density around surface-modified nanoparticles, which correlates well with its increased breakdown strength. This technique thus provides a powerful spatially resolved tool for understanding the microscopic mechanism of dielectric breakdown of nanocomposites.

Abstract:In HVDC equipment, the surface insulation characteristics of insulators are threatened by the irregular movement of micrometer metal particles. As one of the important means to characterize the insulating properties of materials, surface trap characteristics can effectively characterize the influence of micrometer metal particles on the insulating properties of insulating materials. In this paper, a new measurement method of surface potential attenuation is used to investigate the effect of different amounts of metal particles on the trap characteristics of three different insulating materials: epoxy resin, silicon nitride ceramics, and alumina ceramics. The results show that the initial potential and potential decay rate of silicon nitride ceramics and alumina ceramics are higher than those of epoxy resin materials, and the density of the shallow trap central level is higher than that of the deep trap central level. When fewer metal particles are attached to the surface of the insulating material, the surface potential decay rate decreases, the trap density of the shallow trap center decreases, and the density of the deep trap center increases. When more metal particles are attached, the surface potential rate increases, the trap level of the shallow trap center increases, and the deep trap center density decreases. The conclusions of this paper are of guiding significance for the surface charge suppression of DC gas wall bushing insulators.

Abstract:Abstract Improving surface flashover voltage on vacuum-dielectric interface irradiated by electrons is a long-standing challenge for developing high-voltage and high-power spacecraft technology. The basic issue is understanding the role of radiation electrons in the process of surface flashover. In this paper, a ‘three-segment’ curve concerning the surface flashover properties under electron irradiation is discovered experimentally. As the gap distance of electrodes increase, the surface flashover voltage of polyimide during electron irradiation presents a trend of firstly increasing, then decreasing, and finally stabilizing. According to the simulation of the trajectory distribution for kinetic electrons, this trend is found to correspond with three typical stages respectively. In stage A, the kinetic electrons are completely deflected and the varying electrode parameters mainly affect the electric field distribution. In stage B, the kinetic electrons can irradiate the part of polyimide. The promoting effect of those electrons on flashover process enhance with the enlargement of the irradiated region. In stage C, trajectories are no longer seriously deflected and the role of kinetic electrons do not vary with electrode parameters. Combining with the results above, a model with combined effects of both kinetic and deposited electrons on surface flashover in vacuum is thus proposed, base on which the guidance for the methods of improving surface flashover voltage during electron irradiation is provided.

Abstract:Polymers with high surface electric insulation capability are greatly demanded in various electrical devices operating in vacuum ambient. Low secondary electron emission (SEE) is favorable to mitigate vacuum flashover by inhibiting the SEE avalanche across the surface. Although numerous approaches, esp. the surface modifications, promote the flashover strength of the insulator, a facile yet cost-effective modification strategy of a high-quality and scalable flexible insulator remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a facile ion-exchange technique is implemented to fabricate a nanoscale polyimide/chromic oxide (PI/Cr2O3) nanocomposite coating comprising hundreds of organic/inorganic interfaces securely adhered to a flexible PI substrate, which features ultralow secondary electron emission yields (SEEY). The low emissivity is achieved by introducing weakly emissive Cr2O3 nanoparticles as well as interfacial traps within the nanocomposite layer, which outperforms the existing and modified polymers. The PI/Cr2O3 shows a remarkable increase in flashover strength while keeping sufficient mechanical durability. The proposed surface engineering strategy is convenient and scalable, bringing up new insight into industrial applications.

Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites are attractive for HVDC insulation applications, especially for HVDC cables, due to their ability to suppress space charge accumulation through interfacial effects. However, direct evidence to support the existence of interfacial effects at the nanoscale is still lacking. Therefore, rational design and molecular engineering of the interfaces to improve the insulation properties of polymer nanocomposites remain unavailable. Here, we show that efficient space charge suppression can be achieved in polymer nanocomposites at temperatures up to 100 °C by introducing local deep traps through carefully designed nanoparticle/polymer interfaces. The local interfacial deep traps are directly detected at the nanoscale using intermodulation electrostatic force microscopy (ImEFM). This work provides a deep understanding of the interfacial effects in polymer nanocomposites and will enable the rational design of interfaces for high-performance insulation materials.

Abstract:The augmentation of the epoxy (EP) resin surface to advance flashover performance has become a pivotal point of global interest. This research introduces a novel surface modification method and its mechanism for insulation materials. The research follows an electron cyclotron resonance ion implantation system to subject the surface of EP insulation to ion beams with diverse energies, i.e ., 6, 10, 20, 40, 50, and 60 keV for a consistent time of 300 s at an angle of 90°. The experimental phase includes the DC flashover examination under negative polarity. Besides, the simulation phase includes the Monte Carlo model constructed using SRIM software to examine the range and distribution of bombarded ions in the targeted insulation. Results reveal that the flashover properties are affected by the surface potential, surface conductivity, trap distribution, water contact angle, and elemental composition. Likewise, based on the outcomes and theoretical point of view, it is revealed that the bombardment of energetic ions enhances the trap depth, assisting in a reduction in surface conductivity, confining the surface charge movements, and extensively suppressing the secondary electron emission yield. Also, the enhanced trap depth induces homo-charge formation near triple junctions. Synergistically, the factors contribute to high flashover voltages.

Abstract:The exploration of deep space significantly increases the probability of spacecraft failures due to surface electrostatic discharge, which imposes higher vacuum insulation protection requirements on polyimide, the external insulation material of spacecrafts. To address this challenge, this study proposes using silane coupling agent KH550 for organic grafting treatment of Cr2O3 nanoparticles, which are then used to dope and modify polyimide to enhance the vacuum surface insulation of polyimide films. The KH550 grafting improves the interface strength between the fillers and the matrix, allowing the fillers to be uniformly dispersed in the matrix. Compared to pure polyimide films, the prepared PI-Cr2O3@KH550 composite films exhibit significantly enhanced vacuum surface flashover voltage, improved surface/volume resistivity, and dielectric properties. The results demonstrate that polyimide composite films with 0.8% by mass of Cr2O3@KH550 show the most notable performance improvement, with the DC flashover voltage and impulse flashover voltage in vacuum increasing by 20.7% and 27.8%, respectively. The doping of chromium oxide nanoparticles introduces more deep traps into the polyimide films and reduce the surface resistivity. The higher deep trap density inhibits charge migration, thereby alleviating secondary electron emission and surface electric field distortion. Simultaneously, the lower surface resistivity facilitates dissipating surface charges and improves the surface insulation. These findings are of significant reference value for promoting the enhancement of aerospace insulation performance.

Abstract:This paper describes the addition of ZnO nanoparticles to epoxy resin at concentrations of 20, 25, and 30wt%, and the application of this ZnO/epoxy coating to the surface of an epoxy insulator. This coating significantly suppresses the charge accumulation on the surface of the insulator, reduces the number of charge speckles, and increases the flashover voltage. These effects are enhanced as the doping concentration of ZnO nanoparticles increases. Through isothermal surface potential decay tests, we find that the ZnO/epoxy coating introduces numerous shallow traps, which help to dissipate the surface charge. Analysis shows that the ZnO/epoxy coating promotes surface charge dissipation through its nonlinear conductivity. The nonlinear characteristics of the 30wt%-doped samples are 55.3% greater than those of the 20wt%-doped samples. The coating adapts to the external electric field and can achieve the effect of a uniform electric field. This article analyzes the feasibility of using ZnO/epoxy coatings to suppress the accumulation of charge on insulator surfaces, and provides a feasible solution for practical engineering applications.
Study on interface insulation properties of Al2O3 epoxy composites using plasma jet‐fluorinated etching/SiOx deposition

Abstract:In order to improve the gas–solid interface performance of Al2O3 epoxy composites under a DC, a comparative experiment of fluorination etching and SiOx deposition was conducted on the surface of the composites using the APPJ technology, and the interface parameters were adjusted in an extensive range. Due to their superior mechanical and electrical characteristics, Al2O3 epoxy composites (Al2O3/EP) are extensively utilized in producing insulation devices. However, Al2O3/EP is prone to accumulating a large amount of charge under a direct current (DC), which threatens the operation of the power system. In this article, we conducted surface fluorinated etching and SiOx deposition on the material by atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ). Various testing methods were used to investigate the impacts of plasma modification on the physicochemical characterization of Al2O3/EP, and the changes in superficial conductivity, flashover voltage, charge dissipation rate, and trap distribution were experimentally tested. The influences of two plasma modification methods on the physicochemical characterization of Al2O3/EP were analyzed. The enhancement mechanism of Al2O3/EP flash behavior by fluorinated etching and SiOx deposition is summarized. The findings demonstrate that the insulation behavior of Al2O3/EP results from a combination of a few dominant and multiple factors. Fluorinated etching enhances the degree of roughness and the relative proportion of the F element, provides chemically deep traps, and raises the flashover voltage by up to 19%. SiOx deposition boosts the dispersion of charges by forming SiOx layers on the surface, reducing the degree of roughness and increasing the content of the silicon–oxygen element, making it more difficult for charges to accumulate and increasing the flashover voltage by up to 15%. This study will reveal the internal relationship between gas–solid interface and surface flashover, and provide a possible scheme for suppressing surface flashover. Highlights Modifications substantially increase the flashover voltage. Modifications allow a wide range of interface parameters to be adjusted. The effects of modifications on physicochemical properties are compared. The enhancement mechanism of flashover voltage by modifications is compared. The overall effect of multiple factors on insulation properties is analyzed.

Abstract:Surface flashover is a gas–solid interface insulation failure that significantly jeopardises the secure operation of advanced electronic, electrical, and spacecraft applications. Despite the widespread application of numerous material modification and structure optimisation technologies aimed at enhancing surface flashover performance, the influence mechanisms of the present technologies have yet to be systematically discussed and summarised. This review aims to introduce various material modification technologies while demonstrating their influence mechanisms on flashover performances by establishing relationships among 'microscopic structure‐mesoscopic charge transport‐macroscopic insulation failure'. Moreover, it elucidates the effects of chemical structure on surface trap parameters and surface charge transport concerning flashover performance. The review categorises and presents structure optimisation technologies that govern electric field distribution. All identified technologies highlight that achieving a uniform tangential electric field and reducing the normal electric field can effectively enhance flashover performance. Finally, this review proposes recommendations encompassing mathematical, chemical, evaluation, and manufacturing technologies. This systematic summary of current technologies, their influence mechanisms, and associated advantages and disadvantages in improving surface insulation performance is anticipated to be a pivotal component in flashover and future dielectric theory.

The control mechanism of surface traps on surface charge behavior in alumina-filled epoxy composites

Abstract:To investigate the role surface traps play in the charge injection and transfer behavior of alumina-filled epoxy composites, surface traps with different trap levels are introduced by different surface modification methods which include dielectric barrier discharges plasma, direct fluorination, and Cr2O3 coating. The resulting surface physicochemical characteristics of experimental samples were observed using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The surface potential under dc voltage was detected and the trap level distribution was measured. The results suggest that the surface morphology of the experimental samples differs dramatically after treatment with different surface modification methods. Different surface trap distributions directly determine the charge injection and transfer property along the surface. Shallow traps with trap level of 1.03-1.11 eV and 1.06-1.13 eV introduced by plasma and fluorination modifications are conducive for charge transport along the insulating surface, and the surface potential can be modified, producing a smoother potential curve. The Cr2O3 coating can introduce a large number of deep traps with energy levels ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 eV. These can prevent charge injection through the reversed electric field formed by intensive trapped charges in the Cr2O3 coatings.

Abstract:The trapping parameters in the surface layer of solid insulating materials were investigated. The relationship between the surface microstructure of an insulating material and its flashover phenomena was also discussed. The results showed that the energy level of electron traps and hole traps in the surface layer of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was about 0.85∼1.0 eV and 0.80∼0.90 eV, respectively.
