Abstract:With an exponentially growing number of micropollutants dispersed in the environment and an increasing financial effort associated with the detection of very low concentrations in water bodies, models at catchment scale have become an essential tool to identify potential hotspots, to prioritize monitoring campaigns and to support river basin management plans. The choice of the model approach generally brings with it compromises between complexity and accuracy and depends on the specific goals and needs. In this work we compare and critically discuss the performance and the suitability of two different modelling approaches applied at the mesoscale (catchments area between 9 km2 and 300 km2). We present the results for two perfluorinated compounds, namely Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). Both are well-known hazardous pollutants, but not much is known about the spatial distribution of the contamination in river basins.The first model (MoRE, Modeling of Regionalized Emissions) is a relatively data intensive, semi-empiric tool conceived for regionalized pathway analysis. We applied it in all Austrian river catchments to estimate yearly loads and annual mean concentrations. The parametrization relied on a targeted monitoring and on composite samples across several environmental compartments (Zoboli et. al., 2019). We validated the model at 12 quality measurement stations with yearly loads and annual mean concentrations. The second tool is a fate process-based model train developed within the EU SOLUTIONS project for the Danube River Basin (Lindim et al., 2016), which we validated at the same water quality stations. The model train estimates daily concentrations based on emissions and substance properties. It requires only few regional data, mainly regarding hydrology, and thus the parametrization is much easier.The MoRE model showed very good agreement for the loads for PFOA (NSE 0.81, mNSE 0.68) and PFOS (NSE 0.89, mNSE 0.76) and partially good agreement regarding the annual mean concentrations: PFOA (R&#178; 0.41, NSE 0.22, mNSE 0.11) and PFOS (R&#178; 0.8, NSE 0.73, mNSE 0.53). The SOLUTIONS model train showed a systematic overestimation of annual mean concentrations for most of the stations for PFOA (R&#178; 0.19, NSE -5.1, mNSE -0.78) and PFOS (R&#178; 0.61, NSE -9.5, mNSE -1.4). As our observation data consist of long-term composite samples, we were not able to compare the daily concentrations given by the model with the samples. Thus, we could not investigate the temporal pattern of the model deviation.Despite some limitations, the comparison indicates that the higher parametrization effort required by the MoRE model yields more accurate results. Where parametrization data is available, MoRE shall be preferred, since it also provides information about the contribution of different emission pathways (e.g. groundwater and interflow, wastewater treatment plants, industry) to the total emissions. SOLUTIONS brings clear advantages when parametrization data is scarce or for very large river basins. However, it would benefit from a further refinement based on the more detailed system understanding provided by MoRE. A future line of research would thus be their parallel application in combination with a targeted monitoring able to cover both spatial and temporal variability.

Abstract:Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of persistent chemicals, whose impact has been observed in various environmental compartments. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered a major emission pathway of PFAS, specifically in the context of the aquatic environment. The goal of this study was to develop a compartmentalized, source-based load estimation model of 7 PFAS within the municipal wastewater influent. Consumer statistics, data from literature on PFAS concentrations and release during use, and specific sampling activities for environmental flows in the related city were used to estimate per capita emission loads. Model results were compared with loads obtained through the monitoring campaign at the municipal WWTP influent. A wide range of discrepancies (≈5 % to ≈90 %) between loads observed in the WWTP influent and source based model estimates was noticed. The loads less accounted by the model were associated with sulfonic acids (PFSAs), whereas for carboxylic acids (PFCAs) most of the observed loads could be reasonably explained by the model, with even an overestimation of nearly 5 % noted for PFNA. Higher heterogeneity in sources was observed in the PFCA group, with a noticeable dominance in the share of consumer products. PFSAs had less of a consumer product input (<20 %), with the rest of the modelled load being attributed to environmental inputs. A large gap of unknown loads of PFSAs indicates a need for examination of other, not yet quantified activities that can potentially explain the remainder of the observed load. Especially commercial activities are considered as potential additional sources for PFSAs. These findings signify the importance of PFAS that originate from both consumer products, as well as environmental inputs in the overall load contribution into the sewage, while identifying the need for further investigation into commercial sources of PFAS emitted into the municipal wastewater.

Abstract:Here we synthesize current understanding of the magnitudes and methods for assessing human and wildlife exposures to poly‐ and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Most human exposure assessments have focused on two to five legacy PFAS and wildlife assessments are typically limited to targeted PFAS (up to ~30 substances). However, shifts in chemical production are occurring rapidly and targeted methods for detecting PFAS have not kept pace with these changes. Total fluorine (TF) measurements complemented by suspect screening using high resolution mass spectrometry are thus emerging as essential tools for PFAS exposure assessment. Such methods enable researchers to better understand contributions from precursor compounds that degrade into terminal perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA). Available data suggest that diet is the major human exposure pathway for some PFAS but there is large variability across populations and PFAS compounds. Additional data on TF in exposure media and the fraction of unidentified organofluorine are needed. Drinking water has been established as the major exposure source in contaminated communities. As water supplies are remediated, and for the general population, exposures from dust, personal care products, indoor environments and other sources may be more important. A major challenge for exposure assessments is the lack of statistically representative population surveys. For wildlife, bioaccumulation processes differ substantially between PFAS and neutral lipophilic organic compounds, prompting a revaluation of traditional bioaccumulation metrics. There is evidence that both phospholipids and proteins are important for the tissue partitioning and accumulation of PFAS. Abstract:In recent decades, extensive monitoring programmes have been conducted at the national, international, and project levels with the objective of expanding our understanding of the contamination of surface waters with micropollutants, which are often referred to as hazardous substances (HS). It has been demonstrated that HS enter surface waters via a number of pathways, including groundwater, atmospheric deposition, soil erosion, and urban systems. Given the ever-growing list of substances and the high resource demand associated with laboratory analysis, it is common practice to quantify the listed pathways based on emission factors derived from temporally and spatially constrained monitoring programmes. The derivation calculations are subject to high uncertainties, and substantial knowledge gaps remain regarding the relative importance of the unique pathways, territories, and periods. This publication presents a monitoring method designed to quantify the unique emission pathways of HS in large geographical areas characterized by differences in land use, population, and economic development. The method will be tested for a wide range of HS (ubiquitous organic and inorganic pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceuticals) throughout small sub-catchments located on tributaries. The results of the test application demonstrate a high diversity of both emission loads and instream concentrations throughout different regions for numerous substances. Riverine concentrations are found to be highly dependent on the flow status. Soil concentration levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are found to be in proportion, whereas that of potentially toxic elements (PTE) in a reverse relationship with economic development. In many instances, concentration levels are also contingent upon land use. The findings of this study reinforce the necessity for the implementation of harmonised and concerted HS monitoring programmes, which should encompass a diverse range of substances, emission sources, pathways and geographical areas. This is essential for the reliable development of emission factors.

Abstract:Pesticides are detected in surface water and groundwater, endangering the environment. In lowland regions with subsurface drainage systems, drained depressions become hotspots for transport of pesticides and their transformation products (TPs). This study focuses on detailed modelling of the degradation and transport of pesticides with different physico-chemical properties. The objective is to analyse complex hydrological transport processes, to understand the temporal and spatial dynamics of the degradation and transport of pesticides. The ecohydrological model SWAT+ simulates hydrological processes as well as agricultural management and pesticide degradation and can therefore be used to develop pesticide loss reduction strategies. This study focuses on modelling of three pesticides (pendimethalin, diflufenican, and flufenacet), and two TPs, flufenacet-oxalic acid (FOA) and flufenacet sulfonic acid (FESA). The study area is a 100-hectare farmland in the northern German lowlands of Schleswig-Holstein that is characterised by an extensive drainage network of 6.3 km and managed according to common conventional agricultural practice. SWAT+ modelled streamflow with very good agreement between observed and simulated data during calibration and validation. Regarding pesticides, the model performance for highly mobile substances is better than for non-mobile pesticides. While the transport of the moderately to very mobile substances via tile drains played an important role in both wet and dry conditions, no transport via tile drains was modelled for the highly sorptive and non-mobile pendimethalin. In conclusion, the model can reliably represent the degradation of moderately to very mobile pesticides in small-scale tile drainage-dominated catchments, as well as surface runoff-induced peak loads. However, it has weaknesses in accounting for the subsurface transport of non-mobile substances, which can lead to an underestimation of the subsequent delivery after precipitation events and thus underestimates the total load.

Abstract:Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have emerged as newly regulated micropollutants, characterised by extreme recalcitrance and environmental toxicity. Constructed wetlands (CWs), as a nature-based solution, have gained widespread application in sustainable water and wastewater treatment and offer multiple environmental and societal benefits. Despite CWs potential, knowledge gaps persist in their PFAS removal capacities, associated mechanisms, and modelling of PFAS fate. This study carried out a systematic literature review, supplemented by unpublished experimental data, demonstrating the promise of CWs for PFAS removal from the influents of varying sources and characteristics. Median removal performances of 64, 46, and 0 % were observed in five free water surface (FWS), four horizontal subsurface flow (HF), and 18 vertical flow (VF) wetlands, respectively. PFAS adsorption by the substrate or plant root/rhizosphere was deemed as a key removal mechanism. Nevertheless, the available dataset resulted unsuitable for a quantitative analysis. Data-driven models, including multiple regression models and machine learning-based Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), were employed to predict PFAS removal. These models showed better predictive performance compared to various mechanistic models, which include two adsorption isotherms. The results affirmed that artificial intelligence is an efficient tool for modelling the removal of emerging contaminants with limited knowledge of chemical properties. In summary, this study consolidated evidence supporting the use of CWs for mitigating new legacy PFAS contaminants. Further research, especially long-term monitoring of full-scale CWs treating real wastewater, is crucial to obtain additional data for model development and validation.

Abstract:To safeguard the quality of river water, a comprehensive approach is required within the European Water Framework Directive. It is vital to conduct non-target screening of the complete chemical fingerprint of the aquatic ecosystem, as this will help to identify chemicals of emerging concern and uncover their unusual dynamic patterns in river water. Achieving this goal calls for an advanced combination of two measurement paradigms: tracing the potential pollution path through the river network and detecting the numerous compounds that constitute the chemical composition, both known and unknown. To address this challenge, we propose an integrated approach that combines the preprocessing of ongoing Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) measurements at nine sites along the Rhine using PARAllel FActor Analysis2 (PARAFAC2) for non-target screening, with spatiotemporal modelling of these sites within the river network using a statistical path modelling algorithm called Process Partial Least Squares (Process PLS). With an average explained variance of 97.0%, PARAFAC2 extracted mass spectra, elution, and concentration profiles of known and unknown chemicals. On average, 76.8% of the chemical variability captured by the PARAFAC2 concentration profiles was extracted by Process PLS. The integrated approach enabled us to track chemicals through the Rhine catchment, and tentatively identify known and as-yet unknown potential pollutants, including methyl tert-butyl ether and 1,3-cyclopentadiene, based on non-target screening and spatiotemporal behaviour.

Abstract:In response to the growing concern over PFAS contamination, employing models to simulate PFAS behavior in the environment becomes necessary. This facilitates evaluating risks tied to leaching into groundwater, adsorption in soil, plant uptake, entry into the food chain, and the conversion of precursors into persistent PFAS. We utilized the MACRO model to simulate the behavior of the precursors 6:2 diPAP and 8:2 diPAP using data from a 2-year lysimeter experiment, key compound parameters were optimized via the caRamel evolutionary algorithm. We assumed that the transformation of both diPAP precursors into stable PFAAs is influenced by temperature and soil moisture, similar to pesticide degradation by microorganisms. Results reveal that the model accurately represents transformation, leaching, soil retention, and plant uptake of diPAP and transformation products. A comparison with a lab-based soil column study supports the slower natural degradation of precursors, affirming our modeling approach. Temperature and soil moisture could indicate that a worst-case scenario for transformation product leaching into groundwater could occur during a mild summer with moderate evapotranspiration and heavy rainfall. Plant uptake involves multiple elements: PFAS availability in the root zone depends on prior degradation or presence. Increased moisture in the root zone favors PFAS uptake combined with temperatures high enough for prior biotransformation. The calculation of temperature and moisture-based conversion rates was adopted directly from MACRO. It is recommended to further investigate these effects to validate and possibly modify them.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of stable toxic chemicals which have ended up in the environment and in organisms in significant concentrations. Toxicokinetic models are needed to facilitate extrapolation of bioaccumulation data across PFAS congeners and species. For the present study, we carried out an inventory of accumulation processes specific for PFAS, deviating from traditional Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). In addition, we reviewed toxicokinetic models on PFAS reported in literature, classifying them according to the number of compartments distinguished as a one-compartment model (1-CM), two-compartment model (2- CM) or a multi-compartment model, (multi-CM) as well as the accumulation processes included and the parameters used. As the inventory showed that simple 1-CMs were lacking, we developed a generic 1-CM of ourselves to include PFAS specific processes and validated the model for legacy perfluoroalkyl acids. Predicted summed elimination constants were accurate for long carbon chains (>C6), indicating that the model properly represented toxicokinetic processes for most congeners. Results for urinary elimination rate constants were mixed, which might be caused by the exclusion of reabsorption processes (renal reabsorption, enterohepatic circulation). The 1-CM needs to be improved further in order to better predict individual elimination pathways. Besides that, more data on PFAS-transporter specific processes are needed to extrapolate across PFAS congeners and species.

Abstract:We have developed a quantitative particle size analytical method at the single atomic level employing electron microscopy and image processing for the investigation of supported metal catalysts. In the present study, a supported gold (Au) catalyst containing sub-nano clusters and individual atoms was globally observed by high-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) using spherical aberration (Cs)-corrected TEM. To fully extract structural information of the Au clusters and individual atoms from the HAADF-STEM images, a morphological image-processing operation was applied. The resulting mean particle size was in good agreement with particle sizes estimated from average information provided by X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. It is demonstrated that the present HAADF-STEM image analysis gives a quantitative particle size distribution measurement of supported Au clusters and individual atoms.

Abstract:Introduction: Long-term contamination of tap water and groundwater by perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has been documented in the Veneto region of northern Italy. This study aimed to assess the exposure of individuals residing in the contaminated area and to test several toxicokinetic (TK) models of varying complexities to identify an efficient method for predicting perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) concentrations in human serum using observed data.The ultimate goal is to provide public health officials with guidance on selecting the appropriate TK model for specific contexts, a reliable and rapid tool to support human bio-monitoring (HBM) studies. Methods: Two simpler empirical TK models and a more complex multi-compartment physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model were compared with individual and aggregate data from an HBM study. In addition, the PBPK model was modified by adjusting input parameters and introducing new terms into the equations within the original model code. These modifications aimed to optimize the results compared to the original model, with some versions incorporating adjustments to account for the influence of menstruation in women. All models were evaluated to understand their strengths and weaknesses, providing guidance on the appropriate model to use according to specific scenarios. Results: The results obtained from the tested models were quite similar, with significant improvements observed only in the modified models. Simpler models also provided satisfactory results in scenarios involving low PFOS serum concentrations and recent exposure cessation. In many cases, predictions demonstrated high accuracy, particularly at the aggregate level and for women. Conclusions: These findings suggest that environmental protection agencies and health authorities may benefit from employing the tested models at the aggregate level as an initial step in HBM studies, rather than conducting more invasive and expensive screening campaigns.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) raise significant concerns due to their persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity to both ecosystems and human health. However, the long-term trends of PFAS in aquatic environments remain inadequately explored. In this study, we systematically assessed the spatiotemporal distribution, periodic fluctuations, source apportionment, and risk evaluation of 12 PFAS in the Rhine River based on the long-term measuring data collected from 2007 to 2019. The study revealed that the mean concentration and mass flux of total PFAS during this period were 32.83 ng L−1 and 6.36 × 104 μg s−1, declining at an annual rate of 3.70% and 3.82%, respectively. Wavelet analysis demonstrated that the most prominent periodic oscillation of PFAS was 40-60 months. Regarding the sources of PFAS, we employed the self-organizing map (SOM) and the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model for source apportionment. The results indicated that the primary sources of PFAS were agrochemical, pharmaceutical and textile industries, accounting for 38.1% of the total concentration. The contribution from household contamination, tannery industry, and coating materials has increased annually. In contrast, the share of electrochemical fluorination and chemical recycling has shown a continuous decline. The risk quotient (RQ) and hazard quotient (HQ) calculations for three age groups indicated that PFAS exposure did not pose a significant risk to ecological or human health. Implementing source-oriented mitigation strategies is crucial to effectively reduce the ecological and human health risks of PFAS in receiving waters.

Abstract:Abstract Various sorption processes affect leaching of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) such as PFOA and PFOS. The objectives of this study are to (1) compare rate-limited leaching in column and lysimeter experiments, (2) investigate the relevance of sorption to air–water interfaces (AWI), and (3) examine colloid-facilitated transport as a process explaining early experimental breakthrough. A continuum model (CM) with two-domain sorption is used to simulate equilibrium and rate-limited sorption. A random walk particle tracking (PT) model was developed and applied to analyze complex leaching characteristics. Results show that sorption parameters derived from column experiments underestimate long-term PFOA leaching in lysimeter experiments due to early depletion, suggesting that transformation of precursors contributes to the observed long-term leaching in the lysimeters (approximately 0.003 μg/kg/d PFOA). Both models demonstrate that sorption to AWI is the dominant retention mechanism for PFOS in lysimeter experiments, with retardation due to AWI being 3 (CM) to 3.7 (PT) times higher than retardation due to solid phase sorption. Notably, despite a simplified conception of AWI sorption, the PT results are closer to the observations. The PT simulations demonstrate possible colloid-facilitated transport at early time; however, results using substance-specific varying transport parameters align better with the observations, which should be equal if colloid-facilitated transport without additional kinetics is the sole mechanism affecting early breakthrough. Possibly, rate-limited sorption to AWI is relevant during the early stages of the lysimeter experiment. Our findings demonstrate that rate-limited sorption is less relevant for long-term leaching under field conditions compared to transformation of precursors and that sorption to AWI can be the dominant retention mechanism on contaminated sites. Moreover, they highlight the potential of random walk particle tracking as a practical alternative to continuum models for estimating the relative contributions of various retention mechanisms.

Abstract:Contaminated sites with per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are the cause of environmental, health, and financial concerns. Understanding and addressing PFASs at their source areas is important for effective characterization, risk assessment, and remediation. This paper introduces a framework that relies on commonly available PFAS data to assist in identifying PFAS source areas and assess PFAS fate and transport considerations along flowpaths. Currently accepted PFAS physical and chemical behaviors have been incorporated into metrics that can be evaluated geospatially, and/or over time, to build a weight‐of‐evidence approach to refine conceptual site models (CSMs). Graphical representation of data according to a PFAS "family tree" is also proposed for more consistent interpretation and pattern recognition. Combined, these tools create a PFAS data evaluation framework (PFAS Framework) that consists of a tiered analysis approach based on data availability and site complexity. Case studies from real sites are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the PFAS Framework in identifying source areas.

Abstract:The monitoring of Per and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water sources has significantly increased due to their recognition as a major public health concern. This information has been utilized to assess the importance of potential explanatory variables in determining the presence and concentration of PFAS in different regions. Nevertheless, the significance of these variables and the reliability of the methods in regions beyond where they were initially tested is still uncertain. Hence, our research pursues two main objectives: 1) to evaluate the validity of the aforementioned variables and methods for several PFAS species in a different area and 2) to build on existing modeling work; a new PFAS predictive model is introduced which is more reliable in determining the presence and concentration of PFAS at a regional level. To achieve these goals, we reconstructed four state-of-the-art models using a statewide dataset available for Michigan. These models involve spatial regression techniques, classification and regression random forest algorithms, and boosted regression trees. They also include numerous explanatory variables, such as features of local soil and hydrology and the number of nearby contamination sources. Then, we use a Bayesian selection approach to find the most relevant among these variables. Finally, we employ the most relevant covariates to assess PFAS occurrence and estimate their concentration using a novel combination of machine learning algorithms and conditional autoregressive (CAR) modeling. In the first case, PFAS occurrence was assessed with an accuracy comparable to the reconstructed models (>90%) while using significantly fewer variables. In the second case, by maintaining low data requirements, the estimated concentrations of most PFAS compounds were more closely aligned with available observations compared to previous methods, with correlation coefficients ρ > 0.90 and R2 > 0.77.

Abstract:Understanding the retention of per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the vadose zone is vital to the management of impacted sites. This paper examines PFAS retention in the unsaturated zone above the water table using a mathematical model, MODFLOW‐USG‐Transport PFAS or "USGT‐PFAS." The USGT‐PFAS model incorporates adsorption onto air‐water interfaces, providing a more comprehensive understanding of PFAS retention near the water table and release to groundwater. Modeling of a hypothetical perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) site under various idealized site conditions illustrated that the impacts on PFOS retention from smallest to largest were water table fluctuations, low episodic recharge, constant recharge, moderate episodic recharge, constant recharge with water table fluctuations, and high episodic recharge. PFOS retention also varied by sand type, with greater retention occurring in simulations incorporating coarse sand with low capillary potential versus fine sand with high capillary potential. PFAS management strategies were also explored, including the adaptation of gas sparging, a method traditionally used for volatile organic compounds. Gas sparging can concentrate PFAS in groundwater and the vadose zone around the water table, facilitating retention or removal. Model simulations for a simplified hypothetical site demonstrated that PFAS can be substantially retained in the unsaturated zone once gas sparging results in an upward concentration of PFAS in groundwater and the unsaturated zone near the water table. Modeling can aid in understanding PFAS behavior but requires simulation of multiple interrelated processes to correctly predict PFAS fate and transport in subsurface conditions.

Abstract:The transition towards circular and sustainable urban water systems, embracing a water-wise city approach, results in highly interconnected systems, introducing complexities in managing water quality due to the intricate interplay of pollutant sources, pathways, and receptors in urban environments. This study focuses on assessing the impact of transitioning to a water-wise city approach on water quality. The analysis employs an integrated model-based approach to evaluate the release of micropollutants (PFOA, PFOS, pyrene) in the urban water system, considering potential future changes. We considered Milan (Italy) as a case study and explored sustainable urban water management strategies related to the hydraulic reconnection of canals, including (i) the use of groundwater for energy purposes, (ii) the establishment of a separate stormwater sewer system, and (iii) the indirect reuse of reclaimed water for crop irrigation. Acute and chronic environmental risks were assessed at various locations of the recipients, under different water management and climate change scenarios. Uncertainties on projections related to rainfall and runoff concentrations were also considered. The model accurately predicted average micropollutants concentrations in the current situation. PFOA and PFOS exhibit chronic, but not acute risks in all scenarios; high removal efficiency is required to reduce the risk at acceptable levels. Pyrene poses higher risks for increasing separation fractions of the sewer system, with further increase for climate change, but concentration uncertainty has more influence than precipitation uncertainty on the risk extent. This study provides a water management framework, identifying critical sources and locations under current, future, and climate change scenarios.
