Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), the emerging environmental pollutants, have attracted global attention due to the potential public health challenge and ecological security risk. Recent studies suggested liver as a vulnerable organ to MPs exposure, evidenced by abnormal hepatic lipid metabolism upon MPs intake in multiple animal species. How-ever, the specific changes of lipid metabolism in mammalian livers, as well as the underlying mechanisms, remain to be elucidated. In the present study, C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to normal drinking water or drinking water containing 100 mu g L-1 or 1000 mu g L-1 polystyrene (PS) MPs for 8 weeks. MPs exposure exerted no significant effect on body weight, serum triglyceride or total cholesteryl esters. However, mice showed impaired glucose tolerance and hepatic lipid deposition in response to high-dose MPs administration. Further lipidomic analysis showed significant alteration in hepatic lipid species particularly with free fatty acids (FFAs) and tri-acylglycerols (TAGs) in mice exposed to MPs. Meanwhile, the liver transcriptional profile indicated MPs exposure-induced differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched in pathways of lipid metabolism and unfolded protein response. Furthermore, most altered lipid species were significantly correlated with DEGs enriched in lipid metabolic signaling. These findings provide lipidomic and transcriptional signatures of liver in response to MPs exposure, which will shed light on further understanding of the metabolic toxicity of MPs.

Abstract:As emerging contaminants, microplastics (MPs) are predicted to act as vectors for other contaminants and their combined effects are largely unknown. In this study, the combined effects of MPs and natural organic matter (NOM) on the accumulation and toxicity of copper (Cu) in zebrafish (Danio rerio) were investigated. As a result, small-size MPs could absorb more Cu than large-size MPs. The presence of NOM promoted Cu adsorption on MPs in the pH range of 6–8. Our results demonstrate that the combination of MPs and NOM increased Cu accumulation in the livers and guts in a size-depended manner. Correspondingly, the results of biochemical test showed that MPs and NOM could aggravate Cu-toxicity in the livers and guts, which is manifested in the increased levels of malonaldehyde (MDA) and metallothionein (MT) and decreased levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Furthermore, the results of transcriptomic analysis suggested that such aggravation of toxicity was mainly attributed to the inhibition of Cu-ion transport and the enhanced oxidative stress. Since the co-existence of MPs and NOM in the environment is inevitable, their enhancement effects on the bioaccumulation and toxicity of other pollutants such as heavy metals deserve more attention.
Combined effects of polystyrene microplastics and cadmium on oxidative stress, apoptosis, and GH/IGF axis in zebrafish early life stages

Abstract:The toxicological interactions of microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals have been paid much attention in aquatic organism. The mechanisms are not fully clear, particularly in fish early life stages. To the end, zebrafish embryos were exposed to 500 μg/L MPs, 5 μg/L cadmium (Cd), and their combination for 30 days. Body weight, adsorption characteristics of Cd onto MPs, Cd accumulation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-I (GH/IGF) axis were examined. Exposure to MPs and Cd alone reduced body weight, which was aggravated by co-exposure. An increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels was observed in larvae exposed to Cd or MPs + Cd, suggesting an induction of oxidative stress. Lipid peroxidation levels were not affected by exposure to MPs and Cd alone but dramatically enhanced by co-exposure, which may be explained by the reduction of total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) and activity levels of Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) and catalase (CAT) after co-exposure. Increased apoptotic cells were observed in the vertebral body of larvae exposed to Cd, the esophagus of larvae exposed to MPs, and both organs of larvae exposed to MPs + Cd, which was further confirmed by changes in the activities of Caspase-3, Caspase-8 and Caspase-9. PCR array on the transcription of genes related to growth, oxidative stress and apoptosis was examined, showing that the combined exposure resulted in greater magnitude of changes than MPs and Cd alone. The results indicate that MPs can enhance the negative effects of Cd on growth, oxidative damage and apoptosis in early life stages of zebrafish. However, the adsorption of Cd onto MPs was not observed and the combined exposure did not increase the Cd content in larvae compared to the single Cd exposure, implying that vector role of MPs in Cd uptake is negligible.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and methylmercury (MeHg) have attracted increasing attention due to ubiquitous occurrence and toxicity. This study aimed to investigate whether MPs could absorb MeHg and thus modify its bio-concentration and neurotoxicity in the zebrafish larvae (Danio rerio). The pseudo-second-order model (R-2 = 0.989) was found to be suitable for describing the adsorption kinetics of MeHg onto MPs. Compared with Freundlich and Temkin models, the Langmuir isotherm model provided a better fit with the experimental data exhibiting a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 54.945 mg/g. These results suggested that adsorption occurs mainly by a chemical process dominated by monolayer adsorption. MPs adsorbed MeHg to form MPs/ MeHg complex, which was ingested by zebrafish larvae, and promoted accumulation of MeHg. Thus, the presence of MPs aggravated the reduction of locomotor activity induced by MeHg, and downregulation of neuro-transmitters related genes, such as ache, gfap and scl1A3b. Metabolome analysis also revealed disrupted glutathione (GSH) metabolism upon exposure of MeHg alone and in combination with MPs, as reflected by the increased in the ratio of GSH and oxidized glutathione. These effects were also confirmed by upregulation of oxidative stress-related genes, such as sod, sod mt and gpx4a. Collectively, these results indicated that MPs could act as a carrier of MeHg and enhance its accumulation in zebrafish, thereby disrupting locomotor activity by excessive oxidative stress. This study provides a scientific basis for improving health risk assessment of environmental pollutants, particularly those potentially able to adsorb to MPs by virtue of their chemical nature.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging threat to freshwater ecosystems with several ecotoxicological ramifications for fish. Microplastics (MPs) can adsorb heavy metals on their surfaces and increase their availability to aquatic organisms. The combined impact of lead and microplastics on fish has only been studied seldom utilizing a variety of markers. The present study aimed to evaluate the hematological, biochemical, and inflammatory signals (cytokines), as well as antioxidant enzymes in African catfish ( Clarias gariepinus ) exposed to lead (Pb) and MPs individually and combined for 15 days (acute toxicity experiment). The fish were split into four groups, the first of which was the control group. The second group received exposure to 1 mg/L of lead nitrate [Pb(NO 3 ) 2 ]. The third group was given 100 mg/L of MPs. A solution containing 100 mg/L of MPs and 1 mg/L of lead nitrate [Pb(NO 3 ) 2 ] was administered to the fourth group (the combination group). According to the findings, when MPs and Pb were combined for 15 days, the red blood cells (RBCs), thrombocytes, and lymphocytes were significantly reduced in comparison to the control fish. When compared to the control fish, the fish exposed to MPs and Pb alone or together showed a significant rise in blood interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) cytokines. Both MPs and Pb exposure in catfish resulted in significant changes in the plasma electrolytes. The fish treated with MPs and Pb individually or in combination showed significant reduction in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels compared to the control group. The fish exposed to the combined action of MPs and Pb showed a considerable modification in all biochemical markers. The difference in the mean concentration of Pb (mg/L) between the fish exposed to Pb alone and the fish subjected to Pb and MPs combination was not statistically significant. In conclusion, according to this investigation, exposure to Pb caused an insignificant increase in Pb accumulation when MPs were present. However, co-exposure may result in anemia, cellular harm, extremely high levels of oxidative stress, and an inflammatory reaction.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and the heavy metal cadmium (Cd) have attracted global attention for their toxicological interactions in aquatic organisms. The purpose of this investigation was evaluating the effect of MPs (1 mg L<sup>-1</sup>) and Cd (5 mg L<sup>-1</sup>) on the liver function, immune response of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) after 96 h exposure, and intestinal microbiota after 21 days, respectively. Co-exposure to MPs and Cd significantly enhanced MP accumulation in the liver of the crucian carp compared to the accumulation with exposure to MPs alone. Co-exposure to MPs and Cd triggered notable histopathological alterations accompanied by increased hepatic cell necrosis and inflammation, and was associated with higher aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels, lower superoxide dismutase and catalase activity levels, but higher malondialdehyde content and total antioxidant capacity in the liver. Moreover, the combined treatment of MPs and Cd led to the up-regulated transcription of genes related to immune response, such as interleukin 8 (il-8), il-10, il-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and heat shock protein 70, both in the liver and spleen. Co-exposure to MPs and Cd reduced the variety and abundance of the intestinal microbiota in the crucian carp. Our research indicates that the combined exposure to MPs and Cd may exert synergistic toxic effects on crucian carp, which could impede the sustainable growth of the aquaculture industry and pose potential risks to food safety.

Abstract:As the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in the environment continues to rise, more concerns focus on the health risk of combined exposure to MPs and other contaminants. The aim of this study is to investigate the influences of MPs on the tissue-accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in zebrafish and explore the related chronic toxic effects induced by combined exposure of Cd and MPs. After co-exposure to MPs and Cd for 3 weeks, 20 and 200 μg/L MPs increased the accumulation of Cd in zebrafish livers (46% and 184%), guts (10% and 25%) and gills (9% and 46%). The Cd accumulation was gill > gut > liver. Comprehensive analyzes of biochemical biomarkers, histopathological observation and functional gene expression firstly demonstrated that the presence of MPs enhanced the toxicity of Cd on zebrafish and the combined exposure caused oxidative damage and inflammation in zebrafish tissues. Collectively, our results highlight the chronic effects of combined exposure to MPs and heavy metals.

Abstract:Microplastics (MP) are harmful, causing stress in aquatic species and acting as carriers of hydrophobicity. In aquatic environments, benzo[α]pyrene (BaP) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that accumulates in the body and causes toxic reactions in living organisms. We investigated the effects of single and combined microbead (MB) and BaP environments on goldfish antioxidant response and apoptosis. For 120 h, goldfish were exposed to single (MB10, MB100, and BaP5) and combined (MB10+BaP5 and MB100+BaP5) environments of 10 and 100 beads/L of 0.2 µm polystyrene MB and 5 µg/L BaP. We measured MB and BaP bioaccumulation as well as plasma parameters including ALT, AST, and glucose. The level of oxidative stress was determined by evaluating lipid peroxidation (LPO) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in plasma, as well as antioxidant-related genes for superoxide dismutase and catalase (SOD and CAT) and caspase-3 (Casp3) mRNA expression in liver tissue. The TUNEL assay was used to examine SOD in situ hybridization and apoptosis in goldfish livers. Except for the control group, plasma LPO levels increased at the end of the exposure period in all experimental groups. TAC increased up to 24 h of exposure and then maintained a similar level until the trial ended. SOD, CAT, and Casp3 mRNA expression increased substantially up to 120 h as the exposure concentration and time increased. The TUNEL assay revealed more signals and apoptotic signals in the combined exposure environments as a consequence of SOD in situ hybridization than in single exposure environments. These results suggest that combined exposure to toxic substances causes oxidative stress in organisms, which leads to apoptosis.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have been a serious environmental problem because it can carry pollution like heavy metals and organic pollutants. However, the combined effect of MPs and bivalent copper ion (Cu(II)) on the coral azooxanthellate has been rarely studied. In the present study, the combined effects of PVC and Cu(II) on the physiological responses of Tubastrea aurea were studied. Our results showed that MPs alone enhanced the activity of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and reduced glutathione (GSH). The mixture groups had the same effects on the CAT and GSH, which enhanced CAT and GSH activity by 97% and 53% respectively. MPs alone and the combined treatment groups decreased the activity of lipid peroxide (LPO) and the content of metallothionein (MT) by 45% and 20% of the coral Tubastrea aurea. Cu(II) exposure always had negative effect on the physiological parameters of coral, and MPs decreased the toxicity of Cu(II) in the combined groups. This work is the first time to report the combined effects of Cu(II) and microplastics on azooxanthellate coral, which will provide important preliminary data for the following research.

Abstract:Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and microplastics (MPs) are two emerging contaminants of freshwater systems. Despite their co-occurrence in many water bodies, the combined effects of CuNPs and MPs on aquatic organisms are not well-investigated. In this study, primary cultures of rainbow trout hepatocytes were exposed to dissolved Cu, CuNPs, MPs, or a combination of MPs and CuNPs for 48 h, and the transcript abundances of oxidative stress-related genes were investigated. Exposure to CuNPs or dissolved Cu resulted in a significant increase in the transcript abundances of two antioxidant enzymes, catalase ( CAT ) and superoxide dismutase ( SOD ). Exposure to CuNPs also led to an upregulation in the expression of Na + /K + ATPase alpha 1 subunit ( ATP1A1 ). Microplastics alone or in combination with CuNPs did not have a significant effect on abundances of the target gene transcripts. Overall, our findings suggested acute exposure to CuNPs or dissolved ions may induce oxidative stress in hepatocytes, and the Cu-induced effect on target gene transcripts was not associated with MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can pose ecological risk to the environment and have the potential to negatively affect human health, raising serious public concerns. It is recognized that MPs could act as a vector for various environmental pollutants including heavy metals and potentially influencing their mobility, fate, and bioavailabilty in the environment. However, knowledge on the mechanisms underpinning the interaction processes between MPs and heavy metals is far from clear. This review discusses the effects of MPs on the adsorption/desorption, speciation and bioavailability, and toxicity of various heavy metals. The present review also systematically identifies the environmental factors (e.g., pH, ionic strength, and organic matters) that could affect their interaction processes. This work aims to establish a meaningful perspective for a comprehensive understanding of the indirect ecological risks of MPs as vectors for contaminants. The work also provides a reference for the development of better regulatory strategies in mitigating the negative effects caused by the co-existence of MPs and heavy metals.

Abstract:Microplastic particles (MPs) are widely distributed in the environment. The high surface ratio of MPs make them effective transmission mediums for many toxic pollutants. The combined toxicity of MPs and heavy metals have received increasing attention in recent years. In this study, effects of MPs (100 μg/L) on the toxicity of low (15 μg/L) and high (150 μg/L) concentrations of cadmium (Cd) to zebrafish were evaluated based on a 10-day subacute exposure. The survival rate, growth, antioxidant capacity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, histology and Cd biological enrichment in different tissues were investigated with the objective to understand the effect and mechanism of MPs on Cd toxicity to zebrafish. The results showed that the effect of MPs on Cd toxicity mainly depended on the concentration of Cd. MPs significantly enhanced the toxicity of low concentrations of Cd (LCd), including lower antioxidant enzyme activities, higher ROS levels, more severe tissue damage, inhibited growth rate and lower survival rate. However, the effects of MPs on the toxicity of high concentrations of Cd (HCd) were exactly opposite to LCd. Cd enrichment analysis showed that MPs could significantly increase LCd accumulation in intestine, gill, skin and muscle tissues, while decrease the enrichment of HCd in liver, intestine, gill and muscle tissues. Free Cd in the exposure water was significantly decreased by MPs in the HCd and MPs combined exposure group. These results suggest that effect of MPs on Cd toxicity to zebrafish depending on Cd concentration, MPs can increase the enrichment of LCd in zebrafish and enhance its toxicity, but can decrease the enrichment of HCd in zebrafish and attenuate its toxicity. The present study will broaden our understanding of the interaction between MPs and heavy metals.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) coexist with other pollutants (such as heavy metals) in water, adversely impacting aquatic organisms, which might cause unpredictable ecological risks. This study aims to evaluate the effect of copper (Cu2+) and polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on antioxidant capacity, immune response and intestinal microbiota of Nile tilapia. Cu2+ and PS-MPs co-exposure enhanced Cu2+ bioaccumulation in the liver of fish compared with Cu2+-alone exposure. Fish exposed to PS-MPs and Cu2+ displayed histopathologic alterations in the liver, intestine and gill. Exposure at low concentrations of Cu2+ in the C0 and CP0 groups can improve antioxidant capacity and immune response, while oxidative damage and inflammation existed in the high concentration of Cu2+ groups. Intestinal microbiota results showed that the diversity and structure were changed by Cu2+ and PS-MPs exposure, and harmful bacterium even increased at high concentration of Cu2+ and PS-MPs exposure groups. All in all, PS-MPs aggravate the accumulation of Cu2+ and lead to perturbations in biological systems of Nile tilapia.
Combined toxicity of microplastics and copper on Goniopora columns

Abstract:As microplastics (MP) become ubiquitous, their interactions with heavy metals threatens the coral ecosystem. This study aimed to assess the combined toxicity of MP and copper (Cu) in the environment of coral. Goniopora columna was exposed to polyethylene microplastics (PE-MP) combined with Cu2+ at 10, 20, 50, 100, and 300 μg/L for 7 days. Polyp length and adaptability were recorded daily, and coral samples were collected at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days to analyse zooxanthellae density and antioxidant activity. Tissue observations and the analysis of MP and Cu2+ accumulation were conducted on the 7th day. After 1 day of exposure, PE-MP combined with different concentrations of Cu2+ significantly decreased polyp length and adaptability compared with PE-MP alone. Simultaneously, a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) content, lead to coral oxidative stress, which was a combined effect with PE-MP. After 3 days of exposure, PE-MP combined with Cu2+ at >50 μg/L significantly reduced zooxanthellae density, damaging the coral's symbiotic relationship. In antioxidant enzyme activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased significantly after 1 day of exposure. After 3 days of exposure, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity significantly increased with Cu2+ at >20 μg/L. After 5 days of exposure, PE-MP combined with different concentrations of Cu2+ significantly reduced catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), and glutathione transferase (GST) activity, disrupting the antioxidant enzyme system, and acting antagonistically to PE-MP alone. Tissue observations revealed that the PE-MP combined with Cu2+ at >50 μg/L caused severe mesenteric atrophy, vacuolar, and Cu2+ accumulation in the coral mesenteric compared with PE-MP alone. The results suggest that combined exposure of PE-MP and copper leads to more severe oxidative stress, disruption antioxidant enzyme system, tissue damage, and Cu2+ accumulation, resulting in a significant maladaptation of corals to the environment.
Effects of microplastics on the toxicity of co-existing pollutants to fish: A meta-analysis.

Abstract:Aquatic ecosystems are among the main destination for microplastics (MPs) in the environment. MPs that enter aquatic ecosystems can contribute to pollution together with other co-existing pollutants. However, whether such pollution results in higher or lower toxicity to fish than that caused by co-existing pollutants alone remains controversial. This study aimed at closing this research gap based on 1380 biological endpoints under the background of environmental MP concentrations collected from 55 laboratory studies. Overall, MPs in co-existing pollutant solutions significantly increased the toxicity to fish. Specifically, MPs elevated negative effects on the immune system, metabolism, and oxidative damage. Subgroup analysis indicated that changes in toxicity were related to fish life stage and MP size, but not to co-existing pollutant or MP type. Meta-regression analysis indicated that changes in toxicity were not related to the logarithm of the octanol-water partition coefficient (logKow) or exposure time. Finally, the differences between laboratory research and the actual aquatic environment were discussed from four aspects: MPs, co-existing pollutants, environmental factors, and experimental objects. Our study provides a basis for further understanding the potential impact of MPs on aquatic organisms from a combined pollution perspective. Moreover, our results can provide a reference for the conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to provide new mechanistic insight into the growth arrest and apoptosis elicited by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)gamma in breast cancer cells. We ascertained that PPARgamma mediates the inhibition of cycle progression in MCF7 cells exerted by the specific PPARgamma agonist rosiglitazone [BRL4653 (BRL)], because this response was no longer notable in the presence of the receptor antagonist GW9662. We also provided evidence that BRL is able to up-regulate mRNA and protein levels of the tumor suppressor gene p53 and its effector p21(WAF1/Cip1) in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Moreover, in transfection experiments with deletion mutants of the p53 gene promoter, we documented that the nuclear factor-kappaB sequence is required for the transcriptional response to BRL. Interestingly, EMSA showed that PPARgamma binds directly to the nuclear factor-kappaB site located in the promoter region of p53, and chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments demonstrated that BRL increases the recruitment of PPARgamma on the p53 promoter sequence. Next, both PPARgamma and p53 were involved in the cleavage of caspases-9 and DNA fragmentation induced by BRL, given that GW9662 and an expression vector for p53 antisense blunted these effects. Our findings provide evidence that the PPARgamma agonist BRL promotes the growth arrest and apoptosis in MCF7 cells, at least in part, through a cross talk between p53 and PPARgamma, which may be considered an additional target for novel therapeutic interventions in breast cancer patients.
The interfacial interaction between typical microplastics and Pb 2+ and their combined toxicity to Chlorella pyrenoidosa

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), a new type of pollutant, have attracted much attention worldwide. MPs are often complexed with other pollutants such as heavy metals, resulting in combined toxicity to organisms in the environment. Studies on the combined toxicity of MPs and heavy metals have usually focused on the marine, while on the freshwater are lacking. In order to understand the combined toxic effects of MPs and heavy metals in the freshwater, five typical MPs (PVC, PE, PP, PS, PET) were selected to investigate the adsorption characteristics of MPs to Pb 2+ before and after the MPs aging by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation through static adsorption tests. The results showed that UV aging enhanced adsorption of Pb 2+ by MPs. It is noteworthy that MPs-PET had the highest adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ , and the interaction between MPs-PET and Pb 2+ was the strongest. We specifically selected MPs-PET to study its combined toxicity with Pb 2+ to Chlorella pyrenoidosa . In the combined toxicity test, MPs-PET and Pb 2+ had significant toxic effects on Chlorella pyrenoidosa in the individual exposure, and the toxicity of individual Pb 2+ exposure was greater than that of individual MPs-PET exposure. In the combined exposure, when MPs-PET and Pb 2+ without adsorption (MPs-PET/Pb 2+ ), MPs-PET and Pb 2+ had a synergistic effect, which would produce strong physical and chemical stress on Chlorella pyrenoidosa simultaneously, and the toxic effect was the most significant. After the adsorption of MPs-PET and Pb 2+ (MPs-PET@Pb 2+ ), the concentration and activity of Pb 2+ decreased due to the adsorption and fixation of MPs-PET, and the chemical stress on Chlorella pyrenoidosa was reduced, but the physical stress of MPs-PET still existed and posed a serious threat to the survival of Chlorella pyrenoidosa . This study has provided a theoretical basis for further assessment of the potential environmental risks of MPs in combination with other pollutants such as heavy metals.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Biliary complications occur frequently after liver transplantation, and many are historically related to T tubes. Stents placed through the donor cystic duct have been used to attempt to reduce tube-related complications yet maintain access to the biliary tree. METHODS The outcomes of all liver transplant procedures performed at the University of Michigan between December 7, 1990 (when transcystic stenting was first used), and April 6, 1995, were analyzed retrospectively. Preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative variables were studied in relationship to biliary complications. The management of complications was also reviewed. RESULTS A total of 291 transplants qualified for study. The overall biliary complication rate was 25%, with no difference between the 237 patients who received transcystic stents, the 28 who received T tubes, and the 26 who received no tube. Among the complications patients experienced, 65% had stricture(s), 44% had stone or sludge formation, and 40% had a leak. Complications attributable solely to transcystic stents occurred in 4% of cases. Advanced age was the only preoperative variable associated with complications. Primary sclerosing cholangitis was associated with intrahepatic strictures, and prolonged cold ischemia time and rejection were associated with stone or sludge formation. Nonoperative management had the highest success rate for anastomotic stricture (76%) and the lowest for intrahepatic strictures (65%). Only one death was directly attributable to a biliary complication. CONCLUSION Transcystic stenting reduces the incidence of significant tube-related complications, but not the frequency of other biliary complications. Biliary complications can usually be managed percutaneously or endoscopically, although intrahepatic strictures and large, early leaks frequently require reoperation. Aggressive, early management of these complications can reduce excess mortality to less than 2%.
