Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to numerous psychological consequences and a drastic increase in the workload of nurses. The present study aimed to investigate the correlation of the job turnover intention of Iranian nurses with job satisfaction and burnout in the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 300 nurses working in the hospitals in Sabzevar, Iran from October 2020 to January 2021. Data were collected using the questionnaires of turnover intention, Spector job satisfaction, and Maslach burnout in a self-report manner. Correlation analysis was used. Then, for assessing a predictive model used a simple linear regression and multiple linear regression analyses. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 24. Results: The results showed that the variables of burnout and job satisfaction are effective on nurses' willingness to job turnover. Furthermore, among the background variable, the findings showed that the economic status of nurses and the male gender of patients under their care can be effective on nurses "job turnover intention and can be used as predictor variables of nurses" job turnover intention. Conclusion: According to the results, special attention must be paid to the job satisfaction, burnout, and the economic situation (as a mediator variable) of nurses to prevent their job turnover in the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is recommended that health managers prevent the job turnover intention of nurses in the COVID-19 pandemic by taking psycho-socio-economic support measures.
A Bayesian approach to reveal the role of psychological factors on turnover intention among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Background: Turnover intention is considered a significant challenge for healthcare and treatment organizations. The challenging conditions of treating COVID-19 patients and the physical and mental stress imposed on nurses during the pandemic may lead them to leave their jobs. The present study aimed to determine the role of psychological factors (general health, mental workload, work-family conflicts, and resilience) on turnover intention using a Bayesian approach during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The present cross-sectional study was carried out during the winter of 2021 at three hospitals in Khuzestan Province, Iran. To collect data for this investigation, 300 nurses were chosen based on Cochran's formula and random sampling technique. Seven questionnaires, including General Health, Mental Workload, Work-Family Conflict, Resilience, Job Stress, Fear of COVID-19, and Turnover Intention Questionnaires. Bayesian Networks (BNs) were used to draw probabilistic and graphical models. A sensitivity analysis also was performed to study the effects of the variables. The GeNIe academic software, version 2.3, facilitated the examination of the Bayesian network. Results: The statistically significant associations occurred between the variables of fear of COVID-19 and job stress (0.313), job stress and turnover intention (0.302), and resilience and job stress (0.298), respectively. Job stress had the highest association with the fear of COVID-19 (0.313), and resilience had the greatest association with the work-family conflict (0.296). Also, the association between turnover intention and job stress (0.302) was higher than the association between this variable and resilience (0.219). At the low resilience and high job stress with the probability of 100%, the turnover intention variable increased by 20%, while at high resilience and low job stress with the probability of 100%, turnover intention was found to decrease by 32%. Conclusion: In general, the results showed that four psychological factors affect job turnover intention. However, the greatest impact was related to job stress and resilience. These results can be used to manage job turnover intention in medical environments, especially in critical situations such as COVID-19.
Managing during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study of health care workers' perceived organizational support and its consequences on their compassion, resilience and turnover intention

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate health care professionals' perceived organizational support and its effect on their compassion, resilience and turnover intention in the United Arab Emirates. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic exerted unprecedented pressure on health care systems, professionals and management systems. Health care organizations begin to explore their roles and function in relation to risks and resilience, in addition to ascertain what level of organization support they are providing to their workers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a questionnaire administered to 538 health care workers, to examine their personal resources and organizational support during the pandemic. Results: A total of 37.7% of nurses were found to have a moderate level of resilience, logistic regression showed that being married is a protective factor against resigning from the profession (OR = 0.462, P = .012, 95% CI: 0.254-0.842), and health care workers who perceived higher organizational support were approximately 50% less likely to have a turnover intention (OR = 0.506, P = .009, 95% CI: 0.303-0.845). Multiple linear regression model indicated significantly higher resilience among physicians (β = 0.12, P < .05) and allied health care practitioners (β = 0.12, P = .022). Organizational support had a significant positive relationship with resilience scores (β = 0.20, P < .001); adequate training was significantly related to higher compassion levels (β = 0.11, P < .05) and high organizational support scores were associated with increased compassion scores (β = 0.27, P < .001). Conclusions: Front-line health care workers reported moderate organizational support during the pandemic, commensurately reflected in moderate levels of personal resilience and self-compassion. Continued and better support is vital for employee sustainability and the increased health system performance, including quality of care and patient outcomes. Implications for nursing management: Nurse managers should help health care workers improve self-care strategies by strengthening personal resources, including shortened duty hours, offering adequate break time, providing a safe work climate and purveying adequate personal protective equipment and supplies to combat infections. They should build an empathetic work environment through understanding the needs of staff, helping tackle their work stress and sustaining cultures of compassion through promoting rewarding and flexibility strategies. Moreover, policymakers and nurse mangers should create a rewarding culture for nurses and other health care workers to increase their commitment to their jobs.
The Relationship between Job Stress and Turnover Intention and Early Retirement among Nurses: Investigating the Mediating Role of Job Satisfaction

Abstract:Background and Objective: Job stress is an interactive situation between the job situation and the person having that job. In the effort-reward imbalance model, which is a method for measuring job stress, the imbalanced relationship between the invested efforts and the rewards received causes stressful reactions in employees, which in the long term causes physical and mental damage to the person. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between job stress and the intention to turnover and early retirement by investigating the mediating role of job satisfaction among nurses. Materials and Methods: This correlational study was conducted in 2017 through field methods and questionnaires. The study sample consisted of 455 nurses working in the governmental hospitals of Hamedan, Iran. Data collection tools included four self-report questionnaires, including job stress, intention to turnover, early retirement, and job satisfaction. Finally, after data collection, SPSS software (version 18) and AMOS23 were used for data analysis. Results: Based on the findings of the present research, a significant negative relationship was observed between effort-reward imbalance with job satisfaction and a significant positive relationship with the intention to turnover. However, no significant relationship was found between effort-reward imbalance and the intention to retire early. Additionally, although a significant negative relationship was seen between job stress and job satisfaction, there was no significant relationship between this variable and the intention to turnover the job and the intention to retire early. Conclusion: According to the obtained results, the variables used in this research, especially the variables with a mediating role, should be considered in organizational planning and policy makings to reduce occupational diseases and enhance employees’ health.
Antecedents of burnout and turnover intentions during the COVID-19 pandemic in critical care nurses: A mediation study

Abstract:Background: Nurses working in critical care environments have experienced a great deal of psychological stress during the successive waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Identifying factors which contribute to burnout and turnover intentions are important to retain intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify factors that are directly and indirectly associated with burnout and turnover intentions in ICU nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used with survey data during the peak of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected through an online survey and analyzed using mediation analysis. A total of 236 ICU nurses across Canada participated in the study. Results: The results indicate that burnout mediates the relationship between moral distress, organizational support, resilience, and turnover intentions. Moreover, 49% of the participants were considering leaving. The reasons were related to lack of administrative support, poor work environment and safety concerns. Discussion: Organizational support and individual resilience can both play a role in turnover intentions through the prevention of burnout symptoms. Managers at all levels play an important role in mitigating the harmful effects of the pandemic. Conclusion: The pandemic has had a serious psychological impact on ICU nurses. Targeted interventions are needed to support this group.

Abstract:Aim. To elaborate on the relationship between work engagement, perceived organizational support, and the turnover intention of nurses by analysing some potential moderators. Background. Nurses’ turnover intention is negatively impacted by their level of work engagement and perceptions of organizational support. However, it is challenging to reach a consistent conclusion. Methods. Data were acquired from six electronic databases. Each study was evaluated using the quality assessment tool for cross-sectional studies of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). STATA 15.0 was used to analyse the data, and a random effects model was used. The groups that included two or more studies were added to the moderator analysis. Results. A total of 40 study articles involving 23,451 participants were included. The turnover intention of nurses was inversely associated with work engagement (coefficient: −0.42) and perceived organizational support (coefficient: −0.32). A substantial moderating role was played by cultural background, economic status, working years, and investigation time ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion. Work engagement and organizational support significantly reduced turnover intention among nurses. Considering the acute shortage of nurses worldwide, nurses with lower wages, fewer working years, and lower levels of work engagement should be given more attention and support from their organizations. Implications for Nursing Management. The meta-analysis suggested that managers should give their employees a more organizational support and promote their work engagement to motivate nurses’ retention intention and maintain a stable workforce with little employee turnover.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: COVID-19 challenged and brought turmoil to the healthcare workers’ mental and psychological well-being. Specifically, they are feeling tremendous pressure and many of them worry about their work conditions and even intent to leave them. In this situation, it is of utmost for them to satisfied their lives during the challenging situation. OBJECTIVE: This paper explores the relationship of life satisfaction with healthcare workers' turnover intention during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was hypothesized that this relationship would be mediated by trust climate, and this mediation association would be stronger when workers experience job embeddedness in the workplace. METHODS: Survey data were collected from the 520 healthcare workers. A moderated mediation examination was employed to test the hypotheses. RESULTS: Results revealed that life satisfaction is positively related to a trusting climate that, in turn, is negatively related to workers’ turnover intention. Moreover, the association between life satisfaction and turnover intention was moderated by job embeddedness. CONCLUSIONS: Focusing on improving healthcare workers’ job embeddedness and increasing their trust climate might enhance life satisfaction and reduce turnover intention. The implications of the findings are also discussed for research and practice.

Abstract:Background and Objectives: Nurses face stressful situations in life, including personal life challenges, the nature of work that requires long standing and concentration, commitment to patient care, and dealing with patients. The study aimed to investigate the mediating role of emotional fatigue and mental well-being in the relationship between perceived social support and job performance in nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: It was a descriptive-correlational research with structural equation modeling. The statistical population was all the nurses of public hospitals in the city of Kerman in 2021, 321 of whom were selected through convenience sampling method. Results: There is a positive and significant relationship between perceived social support and nurses’ emotional fatigue during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are positive and significant relationships between nurses’ perceived social support and mental well-being, emotional fatigue and job performance, and mental well-being and job performance. The results confirmed the mediating role of emotional fatigue and mental well-being in the relationship between perceived social support and job performance in nurses. Conclusion: Since working conditions affects nurse’s job performance, improving internal resources, such as mental well-being, through motivational interventions and giving social support increases their productivity and reduces their emotional fatigue, which plays a crucial role in health crises.
The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Future Nursing Career Turnover Intention Among Nursing Students

Abstract:Introduction: A shortage of nurses has been a major global concern, particularly during pandemics. Nursing students turning away from the nursing profession upon graduation may exacerbate nursing workforce shortfalls. The main objective of this study was to assess perceived occupational turnover intention among nursing students and associated factors (fear of COVID-19 and life satisfaction). Students were also asked to provide suggestions that could enhance their intention to join the nursing profession. Methods: An online survey was sent to all registered undergraduate nursing students at Fujian Medical University, China. The partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) was used to investigate key factors influencing turnover intention. Results: A total of 1020 complete responses were received (response rate: 86.2%). Nearly half (49.1%) reported that they would choose not to be on a nursing course if given a choice, 45.4% often think of not going into the nursing profession in the future, and 23.7% would consider entering a healthcare industry that has zero contact with patients. The total turnover intention score range was 3 to 15, and the mean ± standard deviation (SD) was 9.2 (SD ± 2.5). PLS-SEM path analysis revealed that fear of COVID-19 (β = 0.226, p < 0.001) had a positive effect on turnover intention. Satisfaction with life (β = -0.212, p < 0.001) had a negative effect on turnover intention. Analysis of open-ended survey data on students' perspectives on how to encourage nursing students to enter the nursing workforce revealed five central themes: 1) professional role, respect, and recognition; 2) higher wages; 3) reduce workload; 4) enhance occupational health and safety; and 5) career advancement opportunities. Conclusion: Factors influencing turnover intention and suggestions to reduce students' apprehension towards joining the nursing profession found in this study should be seriously taken into consideration in initiatives to address the nurse shortages.

Abstract:The positive effects of social identification on mental health are well documented in the literature. However, most of this research has been conducted among small groups in WEIRD (Western Educated Industrialized Rich and Democratic Henrich, Heine, & Norenzayan, 2010, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 33, 61) settings. Understanding how social identity as a psychological source can improve resilience and welfare among frontline healthcare workers in non‐WEIRD contexts can help to alleviate the negative impact of large‐scale epidemics overall, especially in resource‐poor settings and contribute towards improved welfare of key healthcare workers. The present research investigates whether identifying as a nurse could influence mental health and intentions to quit directly and indirectly via positive and negative emotions among a unique sample of Iranian nurses (N = 462) during a risky period, the COVID‐19 pandemic. Multiple regression results showed that identifying as a nurse was negatively associated with negative emotions which in turn were positively related to depressive symptoms. In a similar vein, identifying as a nurse was positively associated with positive emotions which, in turn, were negatively related to intentions to quit. Results also confirmed that risk perceptions related to COVID‐19 positively moderated the effect of social identification on negative emotions only. That is, identification as a nurse was associated with reduced negative emotions only when perceived risk was low. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of the findings.

Abstract:Background: The shift in national policies for epidemic prevention and control in the post-pandemic era is undoubtedly a challenge for health care professionals. Nurses, as an important part of the health care professional population, have an even greater impact on their mental health and occupational safety. This may expose nurses to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and presenteeism, and ultimately lead to their turnover. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between turnover intention and post-traumatic stress disorder among Chinese nurses during post-pandemic era, and the mediating role of social support and presenteeism. Methods: In this study, a multicentre cross-sectional survey was conducted in April 2023 among nursing staff in several tertiary general hospitals in northern China, with online data collection using the Turnover intention Scale (PTSD), the Impact of Events Scale (IES), the Social Support Scale (SSS), and the Stanford presenteeism Scale (STAS) and the relationship between variables was analyzed using hierarchical multivariate regression, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder and the Turnover intention from the pathway between. Results: Data were collected from 2,513 nurses who met the inclusion criteria, in which general information such as age, department, specific department, Professional title, history of alcohol consumption, form of employment, Years of working, and Average working hours per day were statistically significant with the difference in the turnover intention. The results of the study showed a 32% high turnover intention among nurses in the post-pandemic era, which was lower than the turnover intention during the pandemic. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that post-traumatic stress disorder, social support, and presenteeism were significant predictors of turnover intention. The total effect of post-traumatic stress disorder on turnover intention to work was 0.472 [bias modified 95% confidence interval (0.415–0.483), p < 0.001]. Social support and attendance played a partially intermediate role in post-traumatic stress disorder and propensity to leave (an indirect effect of 26% of the total effect). Conclusion: Turnover intention and post-traumatic stress disorder levels are high and social support plays an important role in the tendency to leave the job and post-traumatic stress disorder, healthcare institution can be achieved by strengthening social support for nurses in the post-epidemic era and preventing the occurrence of presenteeism.

Abstract:Background: Unfavorable leadership practices are a growing concern in the field of healthcare and nursing that have adverse consequences on nurses' career outcomes. One of the undesirable leadership styles is the toxic leadership style. Considering the importance of nursing managers' leadership style and its impact on nurses' performance and the scarcity of studies in this field, the present study was conducted to determine toxic leadership behaviors in nursing managers and their relationship with the turnover intention among nurses. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional correlational study. This study involved 551 nurses from 5 educational-medical centers in Ardabil province, north-western Iran. Three self-report scales, including The demographic and occupational information form, the Toxic Leadership Behaviors of Nurse Managers Scale (ToxBH-NM), and the turnover intention questionnaire were adopted for assessment purposes in this study. Data were analyzed using SPSS (Version 22) software using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient test, t-test, ANOVA test, and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: Overall, 551 nurses participated in this research. There was a significantly positive relationship between Turnover intention and Toxic leadership behavior Subscales (r = 0.475, p < 0.001). Furthermore, multiple linear regression analysis showed Toxic leadership behavior Subscales (Intemperate behavior, Narcissistic behavior, Self-promoting behavior, and Humiliating behavior), Hospital, unit, Age, and Marital status predict Turnover intention when other variables are controlled. Conclusion: A leader who directly and indirectly adopts toxic behavior toward their employees destructively affects both individuals and organizations. Nurses who work for a manager exhibiting toxic leadership behaviors demonstrated higher turnover intention.

Abstract:AimTo examine, through the lens of the Job Demands-Resources model, the influence of caring for COVID-19 patients on nurse's perception of chronic fatigue, quality of care, satisfaction at work and intention to leave their organization and the profession. BackgroundStudies have examined how fear of COVID-19 contributes to the mental, physical and work adjustment among nurses. To date, few studies have been conducted examining how caring for patients with COVID-19 contributes to work outcomes among nurses. MethodsThis is a cross-sectional survey involving 1705 frontline nurses and licensed practical nurses in Quebec, Canada. From these, 782 reported caring for COVID-19 patients. ResultsHigh chronic fatigue, poor quality of care, lower work satisfaction, and higher intention to leave their organization were found for nurses caring for COVID-19 patients. Poorly prepared and overwhelmed nurses showed higher turnover intention than those well prepared and in control. ConclusionsThere is an urgent need to provide support to nurses during the pandemic, with a long-term strategy to increase their retention. Implications for nursing managementNurse administrators play an important role in supporting their nurses during a pandemic in the form of education, training and policy development to positively impact quality of care and retention.

Abstract:Background: Few studies have examined intrinsic motivation that is related to turnover intention among geriatric nurses employed in nursing homes in China.Objectives: This study aims at investigating the relationship between intrinsic motivation and turnover intention among geriatric nurses employed in nursing homes in China by analyzing the mediating roles of job burnout and pay satisfaction.Methods: Based on multistage stratified random sampling, a total of 1212 geriatric nurses was investigated by a questionnaire in China. Structural equation models were employed to test the hypotheses.Results: Intrinsic motivation was negatively related to turnover intention (β = −0.063), and job burnout (β = −0.072) and pay satisfaction (β = −0.014) played significant mediating roles in the relationship between intrinsic motivation and turnover intention.Conclusions: Findings revealed that intrinsic motivation, pay satisfaction and job burnout were strong predicators of turnover intention. The results may provide implications to lessen turnover intention among geriatric nurses employed in nursing homes.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce the theory and instrumentation that is relevant to nanospectroscopy imaging techniques, including near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) and tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) imaging. We also demonstrate the NSOM and TERS imaging functions in emiconductor samples. Our findings support the view that NSOM and TERS imaging techniques can increase the space resolution and emphasize the surface information for the target surface layer. Thus, these techniques are applicable to the studies of materials with nanoscale patterns in the future.
Predicting Nurses’ Burnout Based on Personality Traits, Work-family Conflict and Social Support in the COVID-19 Epidemic

Abstract:Background & Aims Considering the prevalence of COVID-19, the sensitivity of the nursing profession, and the harmful effects of job burnout on the quality of nursing care, the present study aims to investigate the role of personality traits, work-family conflicts, and social support in predicting job burnout of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials & Methods This descriptive-analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted from August to September 2021, coinciding with the fifth wave of COVID-19 in Iran, on 130 nurses working in four hospitals in Ilam province, who were selected by a random sampling method. Data collection tools were a demographic form, Maslach burnout questionnaire, NEO personality inventory, Carlson's work-family conflict scale, and Zimet's multidimensional scale of perceived social support. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS software, version 26 using Pearson's correlation test and regression analysis. The significant level was set at 0.05. Results According to the results of regression analysis, the relationship of work-family conflict with job burnout was negative and significant (P 0.05). Agreeableness had the highest effect on depersonalization (β=0.405). The work-family conflict had the highest effect on personal accomplishment (β=0.260). Conclusion Personality traits, work-family conflicts, and social support can predict the occurrence of job burnout in nurses. It is necessary for the hospital authorities to use supportive and educational measures to reduce job burnout in nurses during the pandemic.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to adopt the well-established and mature job demands–resources model (JD-R), and to extend its model to work engagement and turnover intention of frontline healthcare personnel. Using the cross-sectional survey and partial least squares path modeling tools, the results showed that perceived organizational support had a negative impact on the turnover intention of frontline healthcare staff. This finding is important because it shows how the medical system managers can buffer the negative impact of a lack of job resources on the work engagement of employees in terms of personal strategies, such as the psychological pressure in coping with a high workload. Compared with employee care, perceived organizational support for the respondents had a positive impact on work engagement, whereas work engagement had a negative impact on turnover intention. This study successfully integrated the literature on job resources, work engagement, and turnover intention to determine the real needs of frontline medical personnel.

Abstract:Background: High nursing staff turnover is a critical issue that negatively impacts the quality of care and patient safety. Turnover intentions, a key predictor of actual turnover, reflect an individual's likelihood of leaving their current position. Understanding the underlying mechanisms driving nurse turnover intentions is crucial for developing targeted interventions to stabilize the nursing workforce globally. Objectives: This study aims to explore the relationship between moral resilience, job burnout, and turnover intentions among nurses, focusing on the mediating role of job burnout in this relationship. Design: This study employed a quantitative, cross-sectional design. Methods: A convenience sample of 322 registered nurses was recruited from two tertiary hospitals in China between August and October 2023. Data were collected using the Chinese version of the Rushton Moral Resilience Scale (Chi-RMRS), the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and the Turnover Intention Scale. Data analyses were conducted using SPSS 26.0 and Amos 21.0. The study followed the STROBE guidelines for observational research. Ethical consideration: Before the commencement of data collection, the Institutional Review Board of Hunan Traditional Chinese Medical College (YXLL202401004) granted ethical approval. Results: The proposed model exhibited an excellent fit to the data, with fit indices as follows: χ2/df = 1.819, CFI = 0.977, TLI = 0.961, RMSEA = 0.072 (90% confidence interval [CI]: 0.033 to 0.107). The structural equation model revealed that moral resilience was inversely associated with job burnout and turnover intentions. Furthermore, job burnout fully mediated the relationship between moral resilience and turnover intentions (β = -0.473, p = 0.007). Further analysis indicated that the depersonalization component of job burnout was the sole mediator in the relationship between moral resilience and turnover intention (β = -3.934, 95% CI [-5.837, -1.932]). Conclusion: The findings indicate that moral resilience among nurses is negatively associated with turnover intentions, with this effect fully mediated by the depersonalization dimension of job burnout. Enhancing moral resilience in nurses may be valuable strategy for healthcare administrators to mitigate job burnout and subsequently reduce turnover intentions.
