Factors contributing to nurse resignation during COVID-19: A qualitative descriptive study

Abstract:Aims: To explore and describe registered nurses' perceptions and experiences of work well-being extending from what inspired them to join the healthcare organization, what created a great day at work for them, through to what may have supported them to stay. Design: Qualitative descriptive study. Methods: Thirty-nine Australian nurses who resigned in 2021 from two metropolitan healthcare organizations in Victoria were interviewed in 2022, each for 30-60 min. The semi-structured interview transcripts were transcribed verbatim and analysed inductively and thematically. Results: Four themes were constructed for each of the key research questions. Inspiration to join the organizations transpired through organizational reputation, recruitment experiences, right position and right time, fit and feel. A great day at work was created through relationships with colleagues, experiences with managers, adequate resourcing and delivering quality care. Factors contributing to nurses resigning included COVID-19, uncertainty of role, workload and rostering, and finally, not feeling supported, respected and valued. Factors that may have supported the nurses to stay included flexible work patterns and opportunities, improved workplace relationships, workload management and support, and supportive systems and environments. Cutting across these themes were five threads: (1) relationships, (2) communication, (3) a desire to learn and develop, (4) work-life balance and (5) providing quality patient care. Conclusions: Novel ways of working and supporting individuals, teams and organizations are needed to maintain and sustain nurses. The nurses' inspiration, what created a great day at work, and support needed to stay highlighted the importance of workplace initiatives to build nursing career pathways, provide equitable opportunities for professional development, workload and roster flexibility and implement professional relationship-enhancing actions to foster authentic civility. Impact: This study contributes an in-depth exploration of the perceptions and experiences of nurses who resigned from two healthcare organizations and provides a description of (1) what inspired these nurses to initially join the organization, (2) what they perceived created a great day at work for them, (3) the factors contributing to their resignation and (4) what may have supported them to stay. The reasons nurses resign from an organization were identified as complex and multi-factorial, with opportunities for promoting nursing career pathways, addressing equity in opportunities and implementing professional relationship-enhancing actions. These contributions add both context and opportunity to strengthen organizational initiatives to attract, sustain and retain nurses.

Abstract:Introduction. The COVID‐19 pandemic has had a significant impact on healthcare professionals globally, with nurses facing diverse challenges at the forefront. Despite their resilience, nurses are experiencing emotional burdens, which have contributed to a growing intention to abandon the profession. Understanding these factors is crucial for addressing the global nursing shortage. Methods. A qualitative descriptive approach was utilized for this study. Nurses who were actively working during the last waves of the pandemic in Catalonia, Spain, were intentionally recruited through social media and personal contacts, and data were collected through online semistructured interviews until data saturation was reached. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method. Results. Fourteen nurses, with an average of 22.8 years of work experience, were interviewed. Thematic analysis revealed three main themes: (1) the impact of COVID‐19 on health, (2) factors influencing the decision to stay, and (3) recommendations to improve crisis management. Conclusion. Nurses faced significant emotional impacts but demonstrated dedication and resilience. Their decision to persevere was influenced by factors such as responsibility, guilt, and economic stability. Urgent measures are necessary to provide tailored mental health support and recognize emotional challenges in crisis preparedness.

Exploring the relationships between resilience, burnout, work engagement, and intention to leave among nurses in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Abstract Background Nurses have faced significant personal and professional stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic that have contributed to increased rates of burnout, intention to leave, and poorer work engagement. Resilience has been identified as a critical factor influencing job outcomes; however, the dynamics of this association have not yet been investigated within the context of the Thai workforce. The study objective was to determine the associations between resilience and job outcomes, including burnout, intention to leave, and work engagement among nurses working in Thailand during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This cross-sectional study gathered data from a sample of 394 registered nurses employed across 12 hospitals. The research instruments comprised the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Health Services Survey (MBI-HSS), a questionnaire assessing the intention to leave the job, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). To determine the associations among the measured variables, multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results One-third of nurses experienced emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and about half experienced reduced personal accomplishment; one-tenth of nurses intended to leave their job. Nurses who exhibited higher levels of resilience were found to have a significantly reduced likelihood of experiencing high emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment. Conversely, these nurses were more likely to report higher levels of work engagement than their less resilience. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic offers important lessons learned about promoting the well-being of the nursing workforce and protecting against adverse job outcomes. While we identified resilience as a significant predictor of several nurse outcomes, other work environment factors should be considered. Government and hospital administrations should allocate resources for individual and organizational-level interventions to promote resilience among frontline nurses so that hospitals will be better prepared for the next public health emergency and patient and nurse outcomes can be optimized.

Abstract:Aim: The three-component model of commitment, resilience and selected nurse characteristics were tested as predictors of nurses' intent to leave the profession. Background: In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, news reports suggest that a mass exodus of nursing professionals is occurring. Method: This nonexperimental, descriptive, correlational, predictive study used a cross-sectional approach to collect survey data from a convenience sample of 189 registered nurses (RNs) who were providing direct patient care in adult inpatient units with a high likelihood of admitting patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and met other eligibility requirements. Results: Most (73.5%) plan to remain in the nursing profession and feel highly resilient. Only affective commitment demonstrated a significant relationship to the intention to leave the nursing profession. Conclusions: The study was conducted after the pandemic had been in effect for a prolonged time, and it is likely the nurses with the intent to leave the profession had already left. The findings provide a glimpse of a sample of nurses drawn from a population likely much different from only a few months prior. Implications for nursing management: Strategies to retain nurses should include efforts to strengthen professional commitment and build resilience.
Personal and Workplace Characteristics as Predictors of Intent‐To‐Stay Among Registered Nurses: An Exploratory Quantitative Multicentre Study

Abstract:Aim This study aims to describe and examine the factors associated with registered nurses' intent‐to‐stay and subsequently identify predictors of nurses' intent‐to‐stay. Design A quantitative, cross‐sectional correlational design was used. Methods A convenience sample of 270 registered nurses completed the questionnaire and was included in this study. Descriptive statistics were used to present the sociodemographic characteristics and scores of outcome measures. Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression with backward selection were conducted to examine how nurses' characteristics and workplace factors influence nurses' intent‐to‐stay. Results The mean age of the participants was 29.2 years. The mean scores for the outcomes were intent‐to‐stay (mean = 2.96), resilience (mean = 3.34), occupational self‐efficacy (mean = 4.34), sleep quality (mean = 9.73) and workplace environment scores (mean = 3.15). The correlation analysis showed that resilience, occupational self‐efficacy, self‐realisation and workload were positively correlated to intent‐to‐stay while sleep quality was negatively correlated to intent‐to‐stay. Multiple linear regression analysis found occupational self‐efficacy, sleep quality, workload, nervousness, nurses' designation and specialisation status to be significant factors associated with intent‐to‐stay. Conclusion Intent‐to‐stay is a complex and multidimensional construct influenced by a variety of personal and workplace factors. Hospital administrators should endeavour to develop measures to improve occupational self‐efficacy, workload, nervousness and push for specialisation training to bolster nurses' intent‐to‐stay. Impact Against an everchanging healthcare landscape following the COVID‐19 pandemic, the findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors of registered nurses' intent‐to‐stay. The findings of this study alluded to the importance of professional development and workload as factors that can influence registered nurses' intent‐to‐stay. Hospital administrators can prioritise workforce retention policies by introducing strategies such as opportunities for upskilling, flexible working hours and streamlining work processes to promote nurses' intent‐to‐stay. Abstract:Background: Multiple factors can fuel nurses' intention to leave their employing hospital or their profession. Job dissatisfaction and burnout are contributors to this decision. Sociodemographic and work context factors can also play a role in explaining nurses' intention to leave. Objective: To investigate the role of sociodemographic and work context factors, including job resources, job demands, job dissatisfaction, depersonalization, and emotional exhaustion, on nurses' intention to leave their hospital or their profession. Design: Multicentre cross-sectional study. Settings: Eight European hospitals, two per each country, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Poland. Participants: From May 16 to September 30, 2022, we collected 1,350 complete responses from nurses working at the selected hospitals (13 % response rate). Methods: The intention to leave was assessed through two 5-Likert scale outcomes, agreeing with the intention to leave the profession and the intention to leave the hospital. Logistic regression models were used for statistical analysis. Results: At the multivariable analysis, a higher intention to leave the hospital was observed for: younger age, having served on the frontline against COVID-19, lack of quipment, living in the Netherlands, emotional exhaustion, dissatisfaction with work prospects, and dissatisfaction with the use of professional abilities. There was a higher intention to leave the profession for: younger age, living in the Netherlands, having work-related health problems, depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, low possibilities of professional development, dissatisfaction with work prospects, lack of use of professional abilities, overall ob issatisfaction, and dissatisfaction with salary. Nurses living in Italy expressed the lowest intention to leave. Conclusion: While confirming the role of job dissatisfaction and burnout, we found higher intention to leave for young nurses, nurses with work-related health problems, and caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dissatisfaction with work prospects, professional development, and salary also increased the intention to leave. We call for educators, managers, and policymakers to address these factors to retain at-risk nursing categories, implementing strategies to mitigate intentions to leave.
Psychological resilience and intention to stay among nurses: the mediating role of perceived organizational support

Abstract:Background: This study aims to analyze the relationship between psychological resilience, perceived organizational support, and intention to stay among nurses. Additionally, it explores the mediating role of perceived organizational support in the relationship between psychological resilience and nurses' intention to stay. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between August and September 2023, involving 1,402 nurses from five Grade 3A hospitals in Guangdong. The survey utilized several instruments, including the General Information Questionnaire (GIQ), the Chinese version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Chinese version of the Perceived Organizational Support Scale (POSS), and the Chinese version of the Intention to Stay Scale (ITSS). The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficient, while the mediating effect of perceived organizational support was assessed using the PROCESS macro mediation model in SPSS. Results: The overall mean score for psychological resilience among nurses in the five Grade 3A hospitals in Guangdong was 60.54 ± 19.17, the overall mean score for perceived organizational support was 45.77 ± 11.49, and the mean score for intention to stay was 20.82 ± 4.65. The results of the statistical analysis revealed positive correlations between psychological resilience and intention to stay (r = 0.388, p < 0.01), between perceived organizational support and psychological resilience (r = 0.570, p < 0.01), and between perceived organizational support and intention to stay (r = 0.550, p < 0.01). Additionally, perceived organizational support was found to mediate the relationship between psychological resilience and intention to stay, with a mediation effect value of 0.067, accounting for 71.28% of the total effect. Conclusion: Psychological resilience of nursing staff directly impacts their intention to stay and indirectly influences their caring behaviors, with perceived organizational support serving as a key mediator in both relationships. Therefore, nursing managers should implement targeted interventions to enhance nurses' psychological resilience and perceived organizational support. Strengthening these factors can significantly increase nurses' intention to stay in their jobs, improve the quality of care, and contribute to building a strong and stable nursing workforce.
The Impact of the Early COVID-19 Pandemic on Registered Nurses' Intent to Stay in Nursing

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult for registered nurses. Media reports, most of them anecdotal, have reported upticks in nurse resignations, and plans to resign and/or leave nursing due to COVID-19. This article reports findings from an online anonymous 95-item survey completed by about 1,600 nurses from a New York City metropolitan area health system's (HS) four hospitals and ambulatory care centers about their COVID-19 experience in the spring of 2020, their intent to stay at the HS, and their intent to stay working as a nurse. Conducted early in the pandemic, this survey addresses a major gap in the literature, as there was no timely evaluation of nurses' intent to leave during the "Great Attrition" wave or to stay during the "Great Attraction" trend. Among those nurses completing the survey, 85.7% reported that they planned to work as a nurse one year later and 77.9% reported that they planned to work at the HS one year later. Those nurses who obtained a master's or doctoral degree as their first professional degree in nursing, or had a high level of mastery, were less likely to report an intent to stay at the HS. Those with no children, those who thought the HS was more supportive, and those who thought that registered nurse-medical doctor relations were higher were more likely to intend to stay at the HS. Those nurses who reported worse communication with their nurse manager were less likely to report an intent to stay in nursing. Those who reported lower stress, who were unmarried and had no children were more likely to intend to work as nurses. Our findings on nurses' intent to leave their organization and their intent to leave nursing are much lower than reports in the popular press. Our data were collected early in the pandemic and it may not reflect the accumulated stress nurses experienced from witnessing the death of so many patients.

Abstract:BackgroundNurses in the frontline of the battle against COVID-19 are highly vulnerable to compassion fatigue (CF), which may affect their mental health, work effectiveness, and patient safety outcomes. However, no studies have investigated nurses' CF in relation to job outcomes and care quality during the pandemic.AimsThis study aims to examine the mediating role of resilience in the relationship between CF and frontline nurses' job outcomes (job satisfaction and turnover intention) and care quality.DesignAn online, cross-sectional survey containing five self-report scales was used to collect data from 270 frontline nurses in selected hospitals in the Philippines.ResultsOverall, 38.5% of frontline nurses experienced medium to high CF during the second wave of the pandemic. Increased CF was associated with poorer nurse-reported quality of care (β = -0.145, p = 0.019), lower job satisfaction (β = -0.317, p = 0.001), and higher organizational turnover intention (β = 0.301, p = 0.001). Moreover, resilience fully mediated the relationship between CF and quality of care (β = -0.088, p = 0.169), and partially mediated the relationship between CF and job satisfaction (β = -0.259, p = 0.001), and CF fatigue and organizational turnover intention (β = 0.272, p = 0.001).ConclusionFrontline nurses are at risk of developing CF during the pandemic. Psychological resilience reduces the negative impact of CF on frontline nurses' job satisfaction, turnover intention, and the quality of care in their assigned unit. Proactive measures to reduce CF should be prioritized by nursing administrators. Resilience-promoting interventions could foster job satisfaction and retention in nurses and, hence, the quality of care delivered in their units.

Determinants of intention to leave among nurses and physicians in a hospital setting during the COVID-19 pandemic: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:The global outbreak of COVID-19 has brought to light the profound impact that large-scale disease outbreaks can have on healthcare systems and the dedicated professionals who serve within them. It becomes increasingly important to explore strategies for retaining nurses and physicians within hospital settings during such challenging times. This paper aims to investigate the determinants of retention among nurses and physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. A systematic review of other potential determinants impacting retention rates during the pandemic was carried out. Secondly, a meta-analysis on the prevalence of intention to leave for nurses and physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. A comprehensive search was performed within four electronic databases on March 17 2023. Fifty-five papers were included in the systematic review, whereas thirty-three papers fulfilled the eligibility criteria for the meta-analysis. The systematic review resulted in six themes of determinants impacting intention to leave: personal characteristics, job demands, employment services, working conditions, work relationships, and organisational culture. The main determinants impacting the intention to leave are the fear of COVID-19, age, experience, burnout symptoms and support. Meta-analysis showed a prevalence of intent to leave the current job of 38% for nurses (95% CI: 26%-51%) and 29% for physicians (95% CI: 21%-39%), whereas intention to leave the profession for nurses 28% (95% CI: 21%-34%) and 24% for physicians (95% CI: 23%-25%). The findings of this paper showed the critical need for hospital managers to address the concerning increase in nurses' and physicians' intentions to leave during the COVID-19 pandemic. This intention to leave is affected by a complex conjunction of multiple determinants, including the fear of COVID-19 and the confidence in and availability of personal protective equipment. Moreover, individual factors like age, experience, burnout symptoms, and support are maintained in this review. Understanding the influence of determinants on retention during the COVID-19 pandemic offers an opportunity to formulate prospective strategies for retaining nurses and physicians within hospital settings.

Abstract:Aims Globally, the nursing shortage is a growing concern. Much of the research on retention of nurses focuses on the experience of those who left positions. In this study, we set out to listen to critical care nurses (CCRNs) who have chosen to remain in their positions to understand the factors retaining them in critical care. Design This interpretive descriptive study was guided by the following research question: 'what factors influence CCRN's decision to continue to work in critical care?' Methods Digitally recorded interviews and a focus group were conducted between July 2022 and January 2023 using a semi‐structured, strengths‐based interview guide with CCRNs from three critical care units at a tertiary hospital in a city in a central Canadian province. Transcribed interviews were analysed using open, axial and selective coding and constant comparative analysis. Results Twenty‐two CCRNs participated in interviews and three in a focus group. The theme of Respect, demonstrated through the interconnected concepts of Working to Full Scope, Team, Rotations and Compensation was identified. Working to Full Scope was described as providing nursing care aligned with how each nurse envisions what nursing is. Being part of a Team led by strong nurse leaders that provides opportunities and supports the sharing of their perspectives was also found. Respect was also found to be demonstrated through Rotations that recognize that work is one part of these nurses' lives. Compensation that reflects the increased education, knowledge and skills required in critical care was the final concept of Respect. Conclusion Organizations should focus their efforts across the identified concepts to demonstrate Respect for CCRNs and retain them. Implications for Practice The findings of this study provide ways to support the retention of CCRNs. Impact This research will have an impact on nursing leaders by providing tangible ways to retain CCRNs. Abstract:The outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), a public health emergency of international concern, has made healthcare staff preparation and the nurturing of high-quality and adequate nursing professionals critical issues. This study aimed to explore registered nurses’ competence in nursing care and their intention to stay in their current workplace. In this study, participants who had graduated from different nursing education systems were recruited. The results indicated that nurses’ level of commitment to the workplace and clinical stress were positively correlated with the experience of working with patients. Stepwise regression analysis revealed the following significant predictors for intention to stay: clinical stress, frequency of caring for people with infections, and taking a course on infectious nursing. The novice nurses’ competencies in the areas of pandemic disease care and care for infectious adults depended on the experience of nursing care and nursing competence in their professional careers, which may have impact on the nurses’ intention to stay. Therefore, clinical stress, frequency of caring for patients, and taking nursing courses were correlated with novice nurses’ intention to stay in their professional careers.

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate health care professionals' perceived organizational support and its effect on their compassion, resilience and turnover intention in the United Arab Emirates. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic exerted unprecedented pressure on health care systems, professionals and management systems. Health care organizations begin to explore their roles and function in relation to risks and resilience, in addition to ascertain what level of organization support they are providing to their workers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a questionnaire administered to 538 health care workers, to examine their personal resources and organizational support during the pandemic. Results: A total of 37.7% of nurses were found to have a moderate level of resilience, logistic regression showed that being married is a protective factor against resigning from the profession (OR = 0.462, P = .012, 95% CI: 0.254-0.842), and health care workers who perceived higher organizational support were approximately 50% less likely to have a turnover intention (OR = 0.506, P = .009, 95% CI: 0.303-0.845). Multiple linear regression model indicated significantly higher resilience among physicians (β = 0.12, P < .05) and allied health care practitioners (β = 0.12, P = .022). Organizational support had a significant positive relationship with resilience scores (β = 0.20, P < .001); adequate training was significantly related to higher compassion levels (β = 0.11, P < .05) and high organizational support scores were associated with increased compassion scores (β = 0.27, P < .001). Conclusions: Front-line health care workers reported moderate organizational support during the pandemic, commensurately reflected in moderate levels of personal resilience and self-compassion. Continued and better support is vital for employee sustainability and the increased health system performance, including quality of care and patient outcomes. Implications for nursing management: Nurse managers should help health care workers improve self-care strategies by strengthening personal resources, including shortened duty hours, offering adequate break time, providing a safe work climate and purveying adequate personal protective equipment and supplies to combat infections. They should build an empathetic work environment through understanding the needs of staff, helping tackle their work stress and sustaining cultures of compassion through promoting rewarding and flexibility strategies. Moreover, policymakers and nurse mangers should create a rewarding culture for nurses and other health care workers to increase their commitment to their jobs.

Abstract:Introduction: Nurses are now more likely to leave their current role in direct patient care than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic. Country culture and the organization of health care systems drive nurses' decisions to leave or stay in the profession. Methods: In a fall 2020 survey of nurse professional quality of life, a content analysis of responses to the open-ended question, "What has been challenging or rewarding during this pandemic experience?" was performed. Results were organized within Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Theory. Results: Six hundred and fifty-six nurses across five countries responded to the question; 526 comments were analyzed. Most (53.6%) respondents were staff bedside nurses. Themes, such as Distress and Fatigue and Building and Experiencing Social Capital were found and understood to reflect cultural values and dimensions such as Uncertainty Avoidance and Power Distance. Discussion: Recommendations include strengthening culturally tailored leadership knowledge to inform and facilitate countries' nurse retention.

Abstract:The emergence of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 posed a new challenge, imposing extraordinary physical and psychological burdens on healthcare workers, clearly exacerbating and intensifying career abandonment. Objectives: The aim of our study was to explore the motivating factors among nurses serving during the coronavirus pandemic that they considered important in their profession despite the mental and physical stress brought about by the pandemic. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Pécs-Clinical Center-Regional Coronavirus Care Center between September 2022 and December 2022. We used non-random, expert, purposive sampling, recruiting healthcare workers who had spent at least 3 months working in a COVID ward (n = 196). Data collection was conducted by using an online, anonymous questionnaire, which included sociodemographic questions, the "Motivation at Work Scale", and a self-edited six-item questionnaire. Results: Regarding the 5-year probability of remaining in the healthcare field, nine participants (4.5%) will definitely leave the healthcare sector, twenty-seven participants (13.7%) are undecided, and seventy-eight participants (39.7%) will definitely stay in the healthcare field over the next 5 years. There is a positive, weak, but significant correlation between intrinsic motivation and the probability of leaving the profession within 5 years (r = 0.281; p < 0.05). We identified a significant, negative, and weak correlation between the number of revisited waves of the coronavirus and the fear of redeployment to the COVID ward (r = −0.273; p < 0.05). Conclusions: Despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, only a small percentage of nurses consider leaving the healthcare profession. Joy and enjoyment in their work were dominant factors even during the pandemic.

Abstract:The effect of short-time somatostatin infusion on gastric and intestinal propulsion of an oral glucose load was examined in healthy subjects by means of a multiple indicator dilution technique. The early gastric emptying rate was enhanced by somatostatin, indicating delayed gastric inhibition. After withdrawal of the somatostatin infusion, the late gastric emptying rate was decreased and the intestinal propagation rate markedly slowed. The effect of long-time somatostatin infusion has to be examined to analyse the nature of the events described.
Mediating Effect of Resilience Between Perceived Professional Benefits and Intention to Stay among Nurses

Abstract:Objective? To explore the current situation of intention to stay and its influencing factors and to analyze the correlations and interactions among resilience, perceived professional benefits and intention to stay. Methods? Cross-sectional survey was used in this study. In June 2017, we selected nurses from three general hospitals of aerospace system as respondents by convenience sampling. All of the nurses were investigated with the general information questionnaire, Nurses' Job Retention Questionnaire, Questionnaire of Nurses' Perceived Professional Benefits and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). A total of 600 questionnaires were sent out and 589 valid questionnaires were collected with 98.17% for the valid recovery rate. The data were analyzed with the Pearson correlation, multiple stepwise regression and mediating effect. Results? Among 589 nurses the total scores of intention to stay, perceived professional benefits and resilience were (3.28±0.58), (128.85±17.48) and (86.55±12.11) respectively. There were statistical differences in the scores of intention to stay among nurses with different ages, authorized sizes, job title, length of care time, operating hours, self-health conditions and burdens of family (P＜ 0.05). Pearson correlation showed that nurses' resilience and perceived professional benefits had positive correlations with the intention to stay (r=0.387, 0.557;P＜0.05). Multiple stepwise regression showed that the five main influencing factors of nurses' intention to stay included health condition, nursing years, positive perceived profession, team sense of belonging and tenacity which explained 35.3% of the variance of nurses' intention to stay. Nurses' resilience had a partial mediation effect between perceived professional benefits and intention to stay with 12.43% for the effect value. Conclusions? Nurses' intension to stay is in a medium level which influenced by many factors. Nursing managers can increase nurses' intension to stay by improving nurses' perceived professional benefits and resilience.

Abstract:Background: The choice of nursing as a career among students has been dramatically affected by the sudden rise of COVID-19 cases, in which the factors within the career may have caused motivation or demotivation. In this study, we determine the factors affecting the choice of nursing as a career among freshmen nursing students in a private university in Manila, Philippines. Methodology: A descriptive study using a survey methodwas employed on 110 respondents fromfreshmen students in a selected private university. Results: The most common reason that motivates students the choice Nursing as a career includes work itself (x=4.62), possibilities for growth (x=4.54), responsibility (x=4.44), achievement (x=4.44), and interpersonal relationship (x=4.39).Meanwhile, the least reasons are high-impact salary (x=3.89), advancement (x=3.85), and working conditions (x=3.85). Conclusion:Motivation plays a crucial role in the decision of students to pursue nursing as a career or profession. Identifying and understanding the reasons for choosing Nursing as a careercan assist nursing educators and policymakersin creating an environment that continues attracting and retaining passionate individuals in this noble profession. Recommendation: Educational institutions should invest in comprehensive career counseling programs among students before choosing an academic college program.
