Abstract:IN a previous paper (McKay and Kilpatrick, 1964) it was shown that the urea concentration in the umbilical venous plasma of non-toxaemic pregnancies was raised when the birth weight was below average for the gestation period. Here we examine the relationship between cord urea concentration, birth weight and gestation period in toxaemic pregnancies, at the same time comparing the urea concentration in toxaemic and non-toxaemic pregnancies. Dieckmann (I 952) states that the maternal blood urea nitrogen is not raised in mild or moderate pre-eclampsia but that it may be elevated in more severe pre-eclamptic toxaemia or eclampsia. Recently, Riedel(l963) has shown that the blood urea of the mother rises with increasing severity of toxaemia, the average concentration in non-toxaemic pregnancy being 16.5 mg. per 100 ml., and in severe toxaemia 31 -2 mg. per 100 ml., with averages of 21 3 and 24.8 in mild and moderate degrees. As Riedel himself notes, he does not take into account the possible influence of gestation, age or parity on urea concentration.
