Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:We provide an alternative unified approach for proving the Pythagorean theorem (in dimension $2$ and higher), the law of sines and the law of cosines, based on the concept of shape derivative. The idea behind the proofs is very simple: we translate a triangle along a specific direction and compute the resulting change in area. Equating the change in area to zero yields the statements of the three aforementioned theorems.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

Abstract:The first main results of this note establish forms of the hyperbolic laws of cosines and sines for certain classes of quadrilaterals and pentagons in the hyperbolic plane, having at least one ideal vertex and right angles at non-ideal vertices, in which the length of a horocyclic cross-section at an ideal vertex plays the role filled by the dihedral angle in the usual versions of these laws. The final main result bounds the transversal length of a truncated tetrahedron in three-dimensional hyperbolic space, meaning the distance from a designated internal edge to its opposite, in terms of the tetrahedron's entire collection of internal edge lengths. All main results are established using the unifying perspective of the hyperboloid model and Lorentzian geometry. A thorough introduction to this perspective is provided, with references as appropriate.

Abstract:This article proposes a possible path devoted to upper secondary school and early university students, as well as training teachers, with the aim to build a conscious approach to the learning/teaching of the conics, which uses, for an educational purpose, the close relationship between conics as loci of points of a plane and conics as sections of a cone. In this path, we will refer to some elements taken from the history of mathematics relating to a particular conic: the parabola. These elements could help students to discover and realize the transition from a parabola considered as a curve in a plane to the same parabola considered on a cone of which it is a section, as well as the inverse passage, and to grasp the profound link between two presentations of the same geometric object. Both steps will be carried out through constructions made with the use of the GeoGebra dynamic geometry software. In addition, it will be highlighted how the construction of conics by points has allowed the creation of lenses and mirrors, which represents a practical application of geometry very relevant to physics and astronomy. Such a practical approach could help students to overcome the difficulty in understanding conics by making the argument less abstract. Moreover, this path could build up an environment in which teachers and students could explore some semiotic registers and their changes, through which Mathematics expresses itself. In the final part, an educational experiment of the path that was proposed will be shown to the students of the Master’s degree course of “mathematics education” at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Calabria. The results of this experiment are described in detail and seem to confirm that the twofold view of the parabola as a section of a cone and as locus of points of a plane helps the students in understanding its meaning in both theoretical and applicative fields.

Abstract:By introducing a new point of view in Algebraic Topology relating elliptic curves in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and suitable bordism groups, the congruent number problem is solved showing that the Tunnell's theorem is also sufficient. This could be considered also an indirect proof that the Birch Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture is true.

Abstract:There has been a recent media blitz on a cohort of mathematicians valiantly working to fix America's democratic system by combatting gerrymandering with geometry. While statistics commonly features in the courtroom (forensics, DNA analysis, etc.), the gerrymandering news raises a natural question: in what other ways has pure math, specifically geometry and topology, been involved in court cases and legal scholarship? In this survey article, we collect a few examples with topics ranging from the Pythagorean formula to the Ham Sandwich Theorem, and we discuss some jurists' perspectives on geometric reasoning in the legal realm. One of our goals is to provide math educators with engaging real-world instances of some abstract geometric concepts.

Abstract:Conics in the Euclidean space have been known for their geometrical beauty and also for their power to model several phenomena in real life. It usually happens that when thinking about the conics in a semi-Riemannian manifold, the equations and the graphs that come to mind are those of the quadratic Euclidean equations. For example, a circle is always perceived like a closed curve. We study the geometry of the conics in the semi-Riemannian Minkowski spacetime, and interpret each equation with Euclidean eyes. By defining an extended geometric completeness for conics, we will show that the conic completeness of conics can be changed through a Euclidean mirror.

Abstract:In 1874 Brill and Noether designed a seminal geometric method for computing bases of Riemann-Roch spaces. From then, their method has led to several algorithms, some of them being implemented in computer algebra systems. The usual proofs often rely on abstract concepts of algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. In this paper we present a short self-contained and elementary proof that mostly needs Newton polygons, Hensel lifting, bivariate resultants, and Chinese remaindering.

The Isoperimetric Problem for the Curl Operator

Abstract:In the last decades, many mathematicians have studied the curl operator in compact three-manifolds , mainly the structure of its spectrum and some isoperimetric problems associated with it. In this paper, we will see that all the compact three-manifolds (both closed and and with non-empty boundary) have always optimal lower bounds for the absolute value of their non-null eigenvalues of curl. We will also show that these bounds are always attained and compute the optimal domains and the multiplicities of their associated eigenvalues. So, we have solved the isoperimetric problem associated to the curl operator, and, by the way, we have solved and old Cantarella, de Turck, Gluck and Teytel conjecture in the negative.

Abstract:In this note a simple proof of the famous Fermat-Torricelli problem is given. For the vertices of a given triangle, Fermat asks for a fourth point such that the sum of its Euclidean distances to the three given points is minimized. Many authors present geometric approaches to the Fermat-Torricelli problem. We solve the problem by analytic and geometrical method and extend it to the sphere. we also characterize the median point P on the general regular surface.
