Abstract:We show that uniform lattices of isometries of products of real hyperbolic spaces act properly discontinuously and cocompactly on a median space. For lattices in products of at least two factors, this is the strongest degree of compatibility possible with the median geometry. Our theorem is also relevant for potential Rips-type theorems for median spaces. The result follows from an analysis of a quasification of median geometry that provides a geometric characterization of spaces at finite Hausdorff distance from a median space. We explain how the case of complex hyperbolic metric spaces is different, and that such spaces cannot be at finite Hausdorff distance from a median space.

Median Sets of Isometries in CAT(0) Cube Complexes and Some Applications

Abstract:In this paper, we associate with isometries of CAT(0) cube complexes specific subspaces, referred to as median sets, which play a similar role as minimizing sets of semisimple isometries in CAT(0) spaces. Various applications are deduced, including a cubulation of centralizers, a splitting theorem, a proof that Dehn twists in mapping class groups must be elliptic for every action on a CAT(0) cube complex, a cubical version of the flat torus theorem, and a structural theorem about polycyclic groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes.

Lacunary maximal functions on homogeneous groups

Abstract:We observe that classical arguments of Ricci--Stein can be used to prove $L^p$ bounds for maximal functions associated to lacunary dilates of a fixed measure in the setting of homogenous groups. This recovers some recent results on averages over Korányi spheres and horizontal spherical averages of a type introduced by Nevo--Thangavelu. Moreover, the main theorem applies much more broadly and we explore its consequences through a variety of explicit examples.

On the geometry of some strata of uni-singular curves

Abstract:We study geometric properties of linear strata of uni-singular curves. The singularities of closures of the strata are resolved and the resolutions are represent as projective bundles. This enables to study their geometry. In particular we calculate the Picard groups of the strata and the intersection rings of the closures of the strata. The rational equivalence classes of some geometric cycles on the strata are calculated. As an auxiliary problem we discuss the collision of two singular points, restrictions on possible resulting singularity types and solve the collision problem in several cases. Then we present some cases of enumeration of curves with two singular points, one of them being a node.

Abstract:We show that if ℒ is a line in the plane containing a badly approximable vector, then almost every point in ℒ does not admit an improvement in Dirichlet's theorem. Our proof relies on a measure classification result for certain measures invariant under a non-abelian two dimensional group on the homogeneous space SL_3(ℝ)/SL_3(ℤ). Using the measure classification theorem, we reprove a result of Shah about planar nondegenerate curves (which are not necessarily analytic), and prove analogous results for the framework of Diophantine approximation with weights. We also show that there are line segments in ℝ^3, which do contain badly approximable points, and for which all points do admit an improvement in Dirichlet's theorem.

Abstract:The Shafarevich conjecture for a class of varieties over a number field posits the finitude of those with good reduction outside a finite set of primes. In the case of hypersurfaces in the torus $\mathbb{G}_m^n$, a natural class to consider are those with a fixed Newton polyhedron that are nondegenerate with respect to it. Using an approach similar to that of Lawrence-Sawin for abelian varieties (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2004.09046" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.09046">arXiv:2004.09046</a>), we prove the Shafarevich conjecture for certain classes of Newton polyhedra. In the course of our proof we construct a fiber functor for the Tannakian category of perverse sheaves on the torus in positive characteristic and compute the weights of the Frobenius on it, which leads to the big monodromy results which are key to this method.

Abstract:In this short note, we provide an alternative proof of a notable theorem by Narasimhan and Ramanan. The theorem states that the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of semistable rank $2$ vector bundles over a curve $X$ of genus $2$ with trivial determinant is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^3$. Our proof relies on a criterion by Bauer and Szemberg, which characterizes projective spaces among smooth Fano varieties using Seshadri constants.

Abstract:Extending Stallings' foldings of trees, we show in this article that every parallel-preserving map between median graphs factors as an isometric embedding through a sequence of elementary transformations which we call foldings and swellings. This new construction proposes a unified point of view on Beeker and Lazarovich's work on folding pocsets and on Ben-Zvi, Kropholler, and Lyman's work on folding nonpositively curved cube complexes.

Abstract: We propose a new geometric model for the center of the small quantum group using the cohomology of certain affine Springer fibers. More precisely, we establish an isomorphism between the equivariant cohomology of affine Spaltenstein fibers for a split element and the center of the deformed graded modules for the small quantum group. We also obtain an embedding from the invariant part of the nonequivariant cohomology under the action of the extended affine Weyl group to the invariant part of the center of the small quantum group under Langlands dual group action, which we conjecture to be an isomorphism. Finally, we give a dimension formula for the invariants on the cohomology side, thus providing a lower bound for the dimension of the center.

Abstract:We establish a purely geometric form of the concentration theorem (also called localization theorem) for actions of a linearly reductive group $G$ on an affine scheme $X$ over an affine base scheme $S$. It asserts the existence of a $G$-representation without trivial summand over $S$, which acquires over $X$ an equivariant section vanishing precisely at the fixed locus of $X$. As a consequence, we show that the equivariant stable motivic homotopy theory of a scheme with an action of a linearly reductive group is equivalent to that of the fixed locus, upon inverting appropriate maps, namely the Euler classes of representations without trivial summands. We also discuss consequences for equivariant cohomology theories obtained using Borel's construction. This recovers most known forms of the concentration theorem in algebraic geometry, and yields generalizations valid beyond the setting of actions of diagonalizable groups on one hand, and that of oriented cohomology theories on the other hand. Finally, we derive a version of Smith theory for motivic cohomology, following the approach of Dwyer--Wilkerson in topology.

Abstract:As a sequel to our recent work on Casselman--Shahidi's holomorphicity conjecture on half-normalized intertwining operators for quasi-split classical groups, we modify our method, based on a lemma of Heiermann--Opdam, to prove certain cases of the conjecture for groups of exceptional type uniformly. One main ingredient, established here, is to find an algorithm to produce reduced decompositions of co-rank one relative longest Weyl elements, in terms of certain "small" counterparts.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

The Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture

Abstract:We prove the Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture for families of abelian varieties in characteristic 0. We follow the Pila-Zannier method to study special point problems, and we use the Betti map which goes back to work of Masser and Zannier in the case of curves. The key new ingredients compared to previous applications of this approach are a height inequality proved by both authors of the current paper and Dimitrov, and the first-named author's study of certain degeneracy loci in subvarieties of abelian schemes. We also strengthen this result and prove a criterion for torsion points to be dense in a subvariety of an abelian scheme over $\mathbb{C}$. The Uniform Manin-Mumford Conjecture for curves embedded in their Jacobians was first proved by Kühne. We give a new proof, as a corollary to our main theorem, that does not use equidistribution.

Etale descent obstruction and anabelian geometry of curves over finite fields

Abstract:Let $C$ and $D$ be smooth, proper and geometrically integral curves over a finite field $F$. Any morphism from $D$ to $C$ induces a morphism of their étale fundamental groups. The anabelian philosophy proposed by Grothendieck suggests that, when $C$ has genus at least $2$, all open homomorphisms between the étale fundamental groups should arise in this way from a nonconstant morphism of curves. We relate this expectation to the arithmetic of the curve $C_K$ over the global function field $K = F(D)$. Specifically, we show that there is a bijection between the set of conjugacy classes of well-behaved morphism of fundamental groups and locally constant adelic points of $C_K$ that survive étale descent. We use this to provide further evidence for the anabelian conjecture by relating it to another recent conjecture by Sutherland and the second author.

Diamonds: Homology and the Central Series of Groups

Abstract:We establish an analog of a theorem of Stallings which asserts the homomorphisms between the universal nilpotent quotients induced by a homomorphism $G \to H$ of groups are isomorphisms provided a pair of homological conditions are satisfied. Our analogy does not have a homomorphism between $G$ and $H$ but instead we have a diamond of groups containing $G,H$ that satisfies a similar homological condition. We derive a few applications of this result. First, we show that there exist non-isomorphic number fields whose absolute Galois groups have isomorphic universal nilpotent quotients. We show that there exists pairs of non-isometric hyperbolic $n$-manifolds whose fundamental groups are residually nilpotent and have isomorphic universal nilpotent quotients. These are the first examples of residually nilpotent Kleinian groups with arbitrarily large nilpotent genus. Complex hyperbolic 2-manifold examples are given which also supply examples of surfaces whose geometric fundamental groups have the isomorphic universal nilpotent quotients and the isomorphisms are compatible with the outer Galois actions. The case of Riemann surfaces provides examples of curves where the same implication holds. In fact, for every $g \geq 2$, we show all but finitely many curves in $\mathcal{M}_g$ have finite covers where this happens.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere $Y$, and $\Sigma$ the corresponding $n$-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that $\Sigma$ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when $n$ is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of $\Sigma$. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various $\eta$-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori of all semi-free actions of $Z/n$ on integral homology 3-spheres; (2) we give a novel obstruction (in terms of the Jones polynomial) for the branched cover of a knot in $S^3$ being an $L$-space; (3) we give a new set of knot concordance invariants in terms of the monopole Lefschetz numbers of covering translations on the branched covers.
